EVENT
As the winter drags on, the snow starts to fall in unusually large quantities. Great drifts pile up against the walls, the roofs groan under the strain of supporting the white powder. Even setting foot outside a hut means pushing through snow lying nearly waist-deep! The situation reaches its worst when a young man who went to fetch firewood is found dead, only his hand unburied by a sudden fall of snow from the roof. To make matters worse, the few lookouts brave enough to sit out in the snow report seeing a shadowy figure moving at the edge of the treeline, even coming into the farms, only ever showing up when the snowfall is at its very thickest. The constant snowfall shows no sign of stopping soon and then one day... The village gate is found open, held wide by an inexplicably deep bank of snow

What will the tribe do?
A) Gather together and make sure everyone is bundled up well against the cold, ride out the snow the same way as the last harsh winter
B) Light fires and shovel the snow away from the village and the paths inside the walls
C) Post an increased watch and keep a look-out for the figure out in the snow
D) Other

> Alert: Handholding is officially OFF.
>>
>>21016170
Can we have an action point for the followers of Groza(that's the wars god, right)? Have them research new ways of fighting or think of new weapons? It would take an extra point to make them, but the followers spend their whole day fighting, it seems like they would come up with new weapons.

The tribe treats the winter like any other, gathering into groups, lighting warm fires inside the huts, bundling up in furs and trying to stay warm. As the days pass however, the snow thickens to a blizzard. The wind howls and screams through the village, snow burying the doorways to huts. Then one day, rising even over the howl of the wind, comes a piercing scream. Several of the tribe struggle to see what the commotion is and find one of the huts, a tunnel pushed through the snow to the inside. Within, everything is blanketed in snow and a wind whips it around and around. Every tribesman and woman inside is dead, the blood frozen in their veins. One of them, a pregnant woman is being cradled in the lap of a strange woman. The stranger seems to be sobbing as though her heart would break, but when she sees the tribesfolk looking in through the door, she starts up, a great billow of snow obscuring her... And then she is gone.

The intrusion and deaths has the entire village in a panic. They demand the heads of the families take action!

What will the tribe do?
A) Organise a hunt for this strange woman
B) Bank great fires, get the snow out of the village
C) Send messengers to the other tribes for help
D) Try to find and negotiate with the woman
E) Beg the gods for help

Hrunti, he knows the woods, he's probably had tea and crackers with this bitch.

That reminds me, if we keep going with religious orders, our scouts and hunters should be devoted to our wolfy pal.
>>
>>21017306
Yeah, Hrunti seems like the prime choice on this one. Don't ask me why, I just... I just feel it in my bones.
>>
>>21017336
Yea Hrunti might know something that is going on in the woods.
>>
>>21017296
Hrunti - Spirit of the hunt.
Yeneth - Spirit of love.
Chani - River spirit. I'd say fertility, really.
Groza - Spirit of battle.

I think that's all of them, but I guess I might be missing one.

There are also two other spirits for the Copper Tribe we've encountered but that's not entirely too important right now.

Hi, New. I'm the GM. Enjoy your stay!

>>21017179
With the blizzard still howling and the unknown woman still at large, it takes only the bravest of the brave to venture forth into the forest, to find Hrunti's shrine. For a while, it's touch-and-go that they'll even be able to find it without being completely lost. Through luck and skill however, they finally find the Wolf Oak, chilled to the bone and shivering from the freezing cold. The priest of the Wolf God makes the prayers and soon the spirit of wolves appears, padding out of the snow, almost invisible with his white pelt. Before the group's eyes, he shifts, standing upright and his white coat becoming a fur mantle about the shoulders of a man, garbed warmly in furs and with a copper spear in his hand. His hair is white as the snow, his eyes yellow and fierce. Two, white, wolfen ears stand on his head, a tail held behind him. The god sits in a hollow of the roots at the base of his oak and listens to the tribe's story and plea for aid.
>>
> Stupid field length

>>21017579
"It is most definitely a spirit and god, like myself or Chani" he nods. "She could be slain, much as Trym slew me, but that would only keep her at bay for a year and a day. A wolf, even a god of wolves, has little power over the snow. The river has little power over snow. And even the bravest fighters do not go to fight in the snow. If you wish for protection, you must call to a new spirit." He rubs his chin and grins, "Call to a spirit of something that fights the snow. Not winter, for winter is just a season and cannot be stopped, but just the snow. I've known this spirit for some time, but she's never yet been named or greeted. You may have to bring her to heel before you may speak to her, or force her to bow before your law."

With that, the Wolf God dismisses the tribesmen, sending his priest to guide them back to the village. The journey back is unerring and swift, their guide seeming to know exactly where to go, even in the face of the blizzard that still rages.

What will the tribe do now?

FREE CHOICE
>>
>>21017588
We must build a huge fire and challenge this snow spirit to put it out before the night is over. But first we must collect lots of wood so we can keep it alive.
>>
>>21017619
I think so too, fire defeats snow.
>>
>>21017588
Build a very large pyre and call out the spirit of flame. Collect wood for it so as to keep it going.
>>
>>21017588
Well then, the only obvious thing I can think that would defeat snow would be fire. Steep the fires as high as we can and hope that some new spirit of flames (Vulcan, anyone?) decides to come down and help us.

Or I suppose we could try talking to her, maybe? Though a god of cleansing flames and, hopefully awesome smithing with clues as to the location of some tin, would be exponentially more awesome.
>>
>>21017619
Yeah. We need to do what i was saying turn ago. Burn great fires!
>>
>>21017588
Okay, I probably should have been more clear... When Hrunti said to call to a spirit, he meant to actually call out and invite one, rather than just hoping one shows up... I'm sorry if I was misleading...
>>
>>21017821
Just as I thought. We need to build a fire and then call out to the flame spirit.

>>21017680
So lets do this. What do you guys think?

>>21017839
Sounds good to me.
>>
>>21017839

>>
>>21017821

>>
>>21017846
No, everyone said to build a fire and call on the snow spirit to challenge it to snuff out the fire for some reason.
>>
>>21017878
We can't just call on a spirit that might not exist.

>>
Rolled 49

>>21017961
That's how I saw it, we need a firey spirit, or a spirit of the sun.
>>
>>21017961
Lol silly me. I thought Britfag was talking about the snow spirit when he mentioned how "She's never yet been named or greeted." I had no idea he was talking about the spirit we have to contact.

But yes. Steep them fires and contact the fire spirit.
>>
>>21017961
I got a completely different meaning form that post sorry.
>>
>>21017991
Or spirit of hot tea. With lemons!
>>
Gotta love the chaos and confusion.

I understand that we must contact a new diety that controls something that can defeat snow. Therefore, I think that "something" is fire, and our closest way of contacting one is to build a huge fire and call for him.
>>
Lets build a giant fire in hopes of calling a fire spirit.
>>
Is fire what we truly want for protection, what about a spirt of hearth and home?
>>
>>21018005
Gordon Bennet, I really fucked up my wording there.
> Ahem
- Hrunti knows the snow spirit, but she's never been named or greeted
- He recommends that the tribe calls on a spirit of something that fights the snow. At the moment, the idea is a spirit of fire. Other things may also work.
- To call on a spirit, the tribe should call out to it and invite it into the village. This is different to what's happened until now; which is just waiting for them to show up and accepting them when they do.

>>21017991
Have to say it...
> Praise the sun!
>>
dammit, I'm so late
>>
>>21018077
We need a fire to go in that hearth don't we.
>>
>>21018092
Britfag, if not a spirit of fire. Wouldn't a sun spirit be difficult to call in the middle of a blizzard? Also could we contact a universal spirit of warmth, that encompasses all forms of warmth such as the sun and fire.
>>
>>21018102
He makes a good point though, really. We could just invite the sun god. Probably still with fire, because, well, the sun is a ball of fire, but the upside to the sun god instead of a fire god is that the sun helps crops grow. Double win!
>>
File: 1349566166684.jpg-(115 KB, 1597x959, S.jpg)
115 KB
I am not sure if we are doing right thing. Are we inviting embodiment of FIRE into village? It might be a bad idea.
>>
>>21018092
What fights the snow? Fire or death, the dead can not feel cold. I say one or the other. Also, fire gods are traditionally gods of change and luck as well.
>>
>>21018102

I suppose the hearth is fire tamed.
>>
>>21018163
Then I say we go with a god of death as I suggested. The corpses of the fallen shall be what we bring to bear against the snow spirit.

Also we need funeral rights to help with disease once our village gets bigger, and a god of death will probably be beneficial to that.
>>
>>21018186
I start to think this is less risky than inviting the god of fire in our village. Unless someone comes with a better idea, my vote rests here

>brit must be kicking himself for giving a free choice on this one
>>
>>21018186

Again do we want to invite death into the village I know it could be benevolent and all but still if we have to bind it or something things could go to shit pretty fast.
>>
The problem with a sun god is it would be hard to summon one with out being able to see the sun. I don't see death as fighting for use.
>>
>>21018148
A spirit of the sun would be no harder to call than a spirit of fire. All that really matters is a sincere invitation, though ritual, such as a mighty fire, may help.

You can consider all this information to be volunteered by Gerain, Groza's priest. He has a vague idea, but not much about the specifics. 'Calling to a spirit' hasn't been attempted before, by the tribe.
>>
>>21018222
Yeah, but our village has plenty of dead as of this moment.
>>
>>21018222
A god of death, not of killing. Traditionally death spirits are not evil beings, they simply control the passage of souls from this world to the next. It's not as if this god will kill us, amply when we die he/she will help shepherd us to the afterlife.

Either way we face either the possible destruction of our village (which will kill us) or the possibility of having to do regular sacrifices to keep a death god happy (which we can fix later with a god war)
>>
>>21018238
Likewise, a spirit of death would be just as easy to call to the village as any other.

> From a mechanical perspective, you people are in a good position here. IF you're the first to call upon the spirit of something, I'll give you the power to outline their basic personality, looks, etc. Subject to veto, if I feel your choices are just designed to favour your tribe and only your tribe.

>>21018221
Oh gods, am I ever... This is why I usually keep to choices, but this seemed like something that needed free options.
>>
>>21018238
Also a pyre could call either a fire or a death god if we load it up with sacrifices. Or if we are lucky we can call both. I say we create a fire and load it up with animal sacrifices, maybe one of those new cow calves.

If we get two gods we're much more likely able to fight off the winter maiden.
>>
>>21018238
There you go. I'm saying a sun god. As previously stated, it could defeat the snow since "the sun is a mass of incandescent - a gigantic nuclear furnace" and it could possibly be used to help our crops not to mention tons of other beneficial stuff that a fire god might not be able to match.
>>
Ok... We want to either bring DEATH or FIRE into village. Maybe we shall try talk with this snow lady first?

Britfag, we've got a hung jury. If there isnt an agreement in five minutes, write up the fire and surprise us with whichever god you want to throw at us. We'll deal with whatever you choose.
>>
>>21018275
Ok, my final vote goes to the attempted summoning of Deval, the Burnt Corpse. A god of both death and fire, it's body is that of a human, completely naked and burnt black with soot. It's body has many cracks, from within a light shines. It has no eyes, and instead from it's eye sockets and mouth a fire like glow comes.

He is benevolent, simply bringing the souls of the dead into the afterlife, he stays around the remnants of battle fields and where many have died (particularly plague filled villages).

He calls warmth to draw the souls of the dead towards him with comforting strength, and locks them within his realm of hearth fire. Where they may be away from the cold of death for all eternity, playing among the cinders and embers of their new world. The strongest of his devours ritually burn their arms and legs as tattoos to their god.

Name: Jul’tine, The Great Winged Light

Alignment: Neutral Good

Domain: Sky, Weather, Sun

Appearance: A colossal bird who has had its back wings instead replaced with an extra set of wings. A crest comes off the top of its head, plumed to look like fire. Its feathers vary in color from orange to yellow to crimson, and at the end of its tale it dissolves into fire.

Location: Jul’tine has not permanent location, instead constantly flying in the skies of the world to different locations. He never touches the ground and is in constant motions, whenever he comes close to the boarder with the physical world it is said the beat of his wings cause great storms and light powerful enough to burn the earth.

Beliefs: Worshipers of Jul’tine believe that upon their death that their spirits shall float up to the sky and become the wind and the light that falls upon the earth. They will have their essence float among each other for all eternity, or possibly fill the sails of their ancestors as they attempt to cross the sea or that they will be the light that bathes the crops of their tribe.

We shall light a single fire in the center of the tribe, around which the building will be arranged like planets around the ball of fire. The prey will be round, and around it all of our other priests shall stand on the four cardinal direction. This will be the speech:

"Fire eternal, from the west where the sun lies in wait, and the east in which light bathes us in its warmth. The south where the shifting sands call out name, and the north where the icy lords call them home. The suns sees all, and knows all, it calls upon the world and calls it as it's dominion. Bring our tribe into thy world, the world of the light, and banish the darkness."

Okay, Sun God it is. If anyone cares to write up the summoning ritual, we'll go with what everyone judges to be the best. I'll whip up the particulars of the god in question, then we can move on.

> Never giving free choice again. Nothing wrong with creativity and writefaggotry is always good, but it just takes too long

I say we summon Aloyis the Warm. Gentle spirit of the sun, he warms our lands and nurtures our people with his heating rays. His form is that of a man clad in flowing yellow cloth, like that of Yeneth, with a head wreathed in clouds. His eyes are like that of the midday sky, and his hair like that of his rays upon the crests of waters.

He is a kind god, seeking always peace and nurturing. He teaches his followers to seek out hope in all situations, that his light might shine through on even the darkest of days. When his faithful die he raises them up to his domain of light, where all is made clear and contentment reigns everlasting.

Duly noted. Sorry I let it go on so long for no pay-off. Let's move past it and learn from it.

If you want to write a new one, feel free. You have until I'm done with mine. I really hope you guys don't hold this against me.

But at least village does not get glassed by Burning Hate.
>>
>>21018776
The people of the village build a huge fire with the flames reaching to the higher than the highest building in the village. When that is done the people gather around the fire and begin to hum as the elders write the symbol for sun all around the fire. When they are done a man steps forward and says "We the people of this village call you sun god to protect us from the harsh winds, cold snow ,and the dark clouds of the snow women." then the people start to dance around the fire chanting "Protect us Sun God, Protect us". The man gets louder as the people chant and continues to say "We call on the power and warmth of the sun to protect us for winter". When he is done he steps into the crowd and the people begin to go around the fire faster and faster chanting louder and louder. The fire seems to be getting higher and bright as this is going on when suddenly the fire goes out and out steps the sun god.

This is what I was going to post before spine did his thing.
>>
>>21018935
I still say my burnt corpse would be a good idea, he probably would not have been named before. We can switch him out for the sun god I guess... or not idk.
>>
>>21018956
We'll go with this, with a minor touch-up, if you don't mind...

>>21017588
Like a spear thrust into the sky, the fire leaps high as it may and all around, a fierce heat blasts the tribesfolk, melting the snow into a river of slush. A brilliant spark leaps from the flames and grows in size and intensity, before it lands upon the ground and dissipates, revealing a woman, crowned with bright copper and clad in furs and the leather chestpiece of a warrior. At her back, she carries a quiver and bow. To any who look upon her, she is clearly a warrior, her golden hair cut short and her figure strong and lithe, for all its beauty. She looks up and stands addressing the tribe.
"You called and I answer. I am the Sun-in-ascent, Ermetha. Why do you call to me, strangers?"

How will the tribe respond?
A) Ask her aid in destroying the snow spirit
B) Ask her to protect the village from the snow spirit
C) Ask her questions as to her nature
D) Other
>>
>>21019201
I don't mind it at all.
>>
>>21019201
D) Ask her to protect an envoy of elders to go and negotiate with the snow spirit.

We need as many gods as possible, and a goddess of ice would be good in winters if we can control her.
>>
>>21019201
B, we need a protector, not a hitman.
>>
>>21019201
B) We just want protection.
>>
>>21019201
B) we ask you to protect the village form death this goddess of the snow
D) ask her if she knows who the mysterious lady

I think this snow spirit might just be miss understood not a killer.
>>
>>21019201
B)
We do not understand this creature in the snow, but it may not be evil. It has shown compassion it appears
"One of them, a pregnant woman is being cradled in the lap of a strange woman. The stranger seems to be sobbing as though her heart would break"
We want Ermetha to drive her away, or to try to stop her. We do not know what cosmic ballance we might upset if we kill her though.
>>
>>21019284
Seconded. As an addition, if the Sun in Ascent does concede to help us, we'll obvious praise her as a much welcomed addition to our ever expanding pantheon of deities.

And we can always ask her questions about herself later.

Also, Britfag, as a side note: I deeply enjoy the Sun in Ascent bit. Spendid writing there, chap.
>>
Wait, Sun-in-Ascent?

Does that mean there is a Sun-in-Descent?

Maybe the snow spirit is this god's opposite, the darkness to her light and the cold to her warmth. I think we have the brewings of a god war!
>>
>>21019272
Ermetha nods sagely, "I know of her. She is the spirit of the snow in these lands, just as I am the one who sees to the sun in its ascension. I know not of her nature, for no mortal has ever greeted her and she fears the rays of my sun."
"I will protect you," she continues, "But in the depths of winter even my power is limited. As it is small enough, I may give your village some protection from the snow and I may grant one of you strength enough to resist the chill of her snowfall, but I ask something in return: In exchange for these two boons, you will in return do two things for me, to be chosen as I ask them. Is this agreed?"

A) Yes
B) No
C) Can we talk about this?
>>
>>21019511
A) we need this so yea
>>
>>21019511
Don't see any other answer than A
>>
>>21019511
This might bite us in the ass, I know it but what other choice is there?

A it has to be.

Emertha seems pleased with the tribe's answer. "Avert your eyes." Even with eyes closed, it is easy to see what she does. Emertha draws two arrows from her quiver, each with a copper head that burns as bright as the sun! Putting one to her bowstring and loosing it high into the air. Once it has climbed to its apex, the arrow splits into many dozens of rays of light that fall all around the outer palisade of the village. The second arrowhead she breaks from its tip and breathes on it until it ceases to shine. She then threads it on a spare bowstring and holds it before her. "This talisman will grant whoever wears it the warmth of the Sun-In-Ascent," she declares, "But with it, I ask my first boon. Whoever wears this charm shall leave your tribe, come spring, to go where I direct them, to learn of the ways of the tribe that named me, then to return to you and spread what they have learned."

Who, if anyone, will claim the amulet?
A) Trym
B) Another hunter
C) One of Groza's Devoted
D) Gerain
E) A random tribesperson
F) No-one

If it's an un-named person, they will obviously need a name and description, as they will be classed as a hero!
>>
>>21019890
Any price she could have asked was less costly than the lives of our tribesmen anyways.

I vote for E, but I can't be bothered to write something. It's 4 bongs over here and I'm almost gonna drop my face in the keyboard
>>
>>21019890
We aren't in a position to negotiate. At least that's what I'll tell myself when the second boon is to kill off our first newborn sons.

But that is for another day!

C. I say we send one of Groza's Devoted. The best of them I'd say. Granted they haven't had much chance to train really, but they are still among our best warriors. And we could also call on Groza during the fight against the snow spirit. If there is a fight, that is. I see no reason we couldn't negotiate with her.
>>
>>21019890
One of the devoted, he'll be more likely to come back.
>>
>>21019890
B) and his name will harthle a strong willed man who has always been good with a bow. He loves to hunt with a bow while many others hunt with spears. He has always been a fun guy and seems to make every one laugh when he enters a room.

Of the Devoted

Vulm Shatterspear, named such for his ability to throw a spear with such force...well, you get what I mean.
>>
>>21019980
groza's devoted are devoted to groza not some other god.
>>
>>21019980
Fudge it. Writefag time.

Jorgen Vonstrangle - Jorgen was first in line to prove himself worthy to become one of Groza's Devoted. Though his name may seem frightening, Jorgen is actually a man of somewhat diminutive stature compared to the rest of the tribe and was often the butt of many cruel jokes because of this. Herein lies his truth strength, however. What he lacks in strength, he more than makes up with for with lightning quick reflexes and lethal accuracy with a spear seeming to know exactly when and where to strike an enemy to bring about the best possible outcome to each fight.

He's also a jew.

This fellow wouldn't become a priest of the sun god, he'd just be receiving help from her and have to travel to a distant land for a while.

Nothing wrong with that at all, I wouldn't think but it's up to you gents.

>>21019890
Send out B) Mikuhla, the Younger. He has always volunteered to scout for our tribe and always speaks of what might be beyond our sight, on the horizon. Whilst he has yet to be proven in battle, he is shown bravery in the hunt, and composure when sent as a guard on diplomatic situations.
>are all you guys asleep or something?
>>
>>21020152
Yea but we have a small army do we want to make it smaller and plus this guy could turn out to be a priest and I don't want it to come from our army. Ermetha likes bows clearly but Groza's chosen weapon is the spear so the devoted aren't as well equipped in using Ermetha's chosen weapon. Also do we want one man going away for several months from our already small army.

This man will be sent out in the name of the Emertha, on a mission from Emertha. What more do you want from him? This is will be her reperenstative in our tribe. He cannot have divided loyalties.

Fine, switching to B then.

Fine then, fine.

Changing my vote from C to B. One of you fine gentleman can do a write up on him. Or Mikuhla works well enough.
>>
> Was waiting for you folks to come to a consensus.
> I notice that, while you're all good at short backgrounds to the heroes... We've never even seen a description of what Trym or any of the others LOOK like..!

Mikuhla accepts Ermetha's talisman, slipping it around his neck. He can immediately feel the warmth of the sun spreading through his limbs, the bitter chill of the snow and half-melted slush ebbing away at once. Ermetha informs him that her talisman will grant his body the heat to confront the snow spirit. In the spring, she will call him away on his journey. So saying, she steps back, into the still-smouldering fire, flames leaping up to lick around her. A spark shoots skywards and the goddess is gone. Though a thick snow still falls within the village, it is nothing like the deadly blizzard that still rages beyond the protective wall of Ermetha's fallen arrows.

And I think it's best to call it there for today, given it's 3AM here in England.

I hope you all enjoyed today's game! I may have made a mistake, but I've learned from it and in the future, I'll know better. The next thread will be at 4:30PM, EST on TUESDAY. I hope to see you all there!

Next time on Civilization Quest: The showdown with the snow spirit!
