Day 1 of the Olenus Primaris Campaign

Hell of a first day, journal. The 75th were the last ones to touch down; nearly two months of staggered lander deployments. The rebels have total control over the hives that hold all of the strategic objectives on the planet. Defenses are apparently tight enough to warrant the mass-deployment of the Guard to the surface. THEN we come up with an actual battle plan to take the hives.

Anyways, a bit of an update on how the Liongrad 75th are going to help the campaign's early stages. The way this planet's infrastructure is set up is that the Capital Hive has all of the major spaceports on the planet. Two whole hive spires committed to nothing but the service of cargo landers and bulk-transport shuttles. The other two spires in the hive are committed to the planet's seat of government and its former representation of Imperial governorship. The other two hives on the planet are almost completely made of industrial manufactories, with the exception of one spire in Hive Secundus.
>>
The way these other two hives handle getting their manufactured goods offworld is by sending overland convoys to Capital Hive and getting them into orbit to Chartist and Free Trader vessels from there. While the rebels have nowhere to send the goods anymore since their secession, the rebel forces in Capital Hive have no manufactories of their own, and needed weapons and ammunition. The Liongrad 75th were assigned to convoy-route interdiction to keep them from getting it.
Ordinarily, in peacetime, the convoys from Hive Secundus and Hive Tertius would roll out from the hives' loading docks in one massive haul. In wartime, they break up into numerous smaller convoys that set out almost at random, to keep the enemy from getting the entire shipment should one part of the convoy get attacked. However, this little technique didn't quite work this time. Not against the Liongrad Spirejumpers. The convoys were going to be heading through the planet's polar ice caps, obviously hoping the cold would deter the Guard.
We deployed via a large squadron of Valkyries, courtesy of our good friends in the Imperial Navy. We deliberately scattered ourselves over a wide area in the hopes that we'd catch more of the convoy than we would if we concentrated in a single location. One platoon here, one squad there, two squads over there, so on and so forth. The plan was risky if any one part of the convoy was large and well-escorted, but the Colonel had every belief that the plan would work. And it did.
>>
When we touched down, my squad figured we were at least an hour ahead of the convoy. Our squad's Operator, Sorenson, grabbed a few demolition charges we were issued prior to setting out, and his grand plan was to dig a few small holes and bury the charges next to the path the convoy was expected to take. We could see the road, concealed by the snow and ice, and decided to get our handy-dandy standard-issue entrenching tools, and started digging. It wasn't long before we'd had the charges armed and buried and set up concealed positions in preparation for an ambush. We lay in wait for an hour before we finally hear the rumble of motors coming from up the road.

Vox messages came in from other squads in our platoon that contact with the enemy was imminent. The bastards never saw our men in hiding before we jumped them. Our squad only had to deal with a small segment of the convoy, and when we saw what we were up against, we considered just letting the bastards pass. The convoy numbered only three trucks, but they were being escorted by a pair of Guardian APCs. Sorenson said he'd heard of them - Cheap Rhino knock-offs for PDFs that couldn't afford real Chimeras. The APCs undoubtedly had troops inside, so we adjusted our plan a bit, and Kolgin, our squad's heavy weapons specialist, hefted his missile launcher and popped a rocket off at the Guardian in the rear.
>>
It immediately lit up like fireworks on Emperor's Day and the convoy accelerated in an effort to get the frak away from us. That was their second mistake in five seconds. Sorenson hit the detonator for those demolition charges we'd buried earlier, and the rear troop compartment of the Guardian in the front crumpled like crushed paper before the APC spun out of control and buried itself into a nearby snowbank. The first of the trucks was completely destroyed, and the second truck behind it had its driver compartment compressed by the explosions. The third truck promptly halted, at which point our squad marksman, Kup, picked off the driver and his passenger. Kolgin was quick to reload his missile launcher and fire off another krak missile at the APC that had driven into the snowbank. Soon as that went off, we headed down to check out the cargo in the two trucks that hadn't been completely wiped out.

What we found completely blew our minds: Forty metric tons of plasma weaponry and refined plasma fuel. Needless to say, we nicked a few examples of this sterling equipment and called in the rest. The Commissar doesn't ever need to know, but the regiment could use some of this stuff. If the Colonel gives the all-clear, our heavy weapon specialists might start sporting some of these nice plasma cannons.
>>
We're settling into camp now. Apparently, we're bunking with some of those Sadettin 3rd fellows. And the Roughriders. Those horses smell like shit, but the penal legionnaires seem to be alright fellows. They got those nice dusters and hats, and they can play a mean game of Tarot. The Sadettin are a morbid bunch. Not very nice to us Spirejumpers. Could be some kind of inter-regimental rivalry, but I think it's something deeper than that. There was a shouting match between a couple of squads today from the Spirejumpers and the Sadettin, almost escalated to a fistfight. One of the Sadettin troopers said the Spirejumpers 'got his friend killed.'

I'm sure it's nothing. Almost time for lights-out here, journal, so I'll keep you up to date. Hope this isn't so bad for the 75th's first campaign. With any luck, we'll wrap this up by Saint Drusus' Day this year and be slated for a few weeks' leave by the next one.

Day 2 of the Olenus Primaris Campaign

No action today in the field. The squad helped to establish a proper perimeter around the camp. Kolgin bitched about it the whole time, but when he saw we were establishing plasma cannon emplacements, he stopped. Sorenson performed some routine maintenance rites on all of our gear, and Sarge talked with a few of the higher-ups about what we can expect next time we head out. The intel representatives are being tight-lipped and stingy with the info. In short, we have little idea as to why we're here beyond recapturing the planet.

What I don't get is the widespread rebellion here. The entire planet revolted pretty much at once, with significant backing from the local PDF. The Liongrad 75th COME from a Hive World; we KNOW that popular revolts don't just happen on this scale. One hive district or spire, sure, that's not unheard of. It's happened at least once in our homeworld's history. Widespread riots, makes sense. Food can only be stretched so far before the hab-workers get a bit pissed off. An entire hive has risen up and taken arms against the Imperium at least once before, but the other hives always brought them back into line before the Imperium ever needed to send in the Guard. Multiple hives in unison, at the same time, across an entire world? Hiver cultures and mindsets don't lend themselves to that kind of coordination between hive-cities unless they're being led by the planetary government, and even the governments of hive worlds are fractious. At least on Liongrad, the rulers of individual hives always squabbled and denied each-other aid if they felt it'd advance their own positions. Anything from outside the hive is viewed as a potential threat more than anything. So the entire setup for the war for Olenus Primaris seems a bit frakking BIZARRE, if you'll pardon my High Gothic.
>>
>>21083227
Whatever the people of Olenus Primaris have driving them in this rebellion, I don't like the way this feels. The rest of the regiment knows it too. It warranted TWENTY Guard regiments to deploy on sudden short notice, a mixture of elite, high-priority-campaign (or high-expected-glory campaign; those frakkin' Kilbecks came to visit today. Snooty frakkers, the lot of them) units and whatever cannon fodder Segmentum Command could scrape together to back them up. TWENTY, with word of more on the way. With a MASSIVE supply problem to boot.

Now, I'm a regular trooper and don't ordinarily have access to the supply records. But here's the thing. I'm friends with one of the Departmento Munitorum adepts responsible for distribution of supplies to the troops of the Liongrad 75th. He's told me that there's a crippling supply issue. The campaign force was cobbled together by Segmentum Command within the span of a couple of WEEKS, whereas most campaign strategies call for at least a few MONTHS of troubleshooting and contingency planning, not to mention mustering appropriate supplies. Olenus Primaris is a subsector capital, and a vital industrial world, so we can probably scrape together a lot of battlefield salvage and spare ammo as the campaign proceeds, but food is a MAJOR issue right now.
>>
>>21083470
On that note, I need to mention we've been issued double rations, and my friend in the Departmento Munitorum has informed me that the next shipment is slated to come in eight months from now, by way of Chartist vessel. After calculating all of the food across all twenty regiments, he's told me that we're facing mass-starvation among the planetary assault force within FOUR months. The extra food had to come from somewhere, and I'm starting to think the Sadettin got shafted for our sake. The general staff is trying to find a way to fix the issue, but the math is all off already, and that's not accounting for the vagaries of Warp travel. It's simply unrealistic to believe that, barring the Emperor's extreme grace and goodwill towards us puny Guardsmen, we'll be receiving that supply shipment before half the assault force is dead from starvation. Maybe we'll get lucky and a Rogue Trader vessel will swoop in with a hold full of food to trade for all of these plasma weapons we 'appropriated' from the rebels. That would just make my day.

As it stands, this campaign is really frakking important and we're looking at its complete failure if something doesn't change quick. The Commissariat and general staff have sent out the word that they're expecting the campaign to take quite a bit of time, so they're now recruiting for freelance writers for a wartime newspaper titled The Imperator. I think I might send in an article or two if I can find the time.

It's almost time for light's out. G'night, journal. With any luck, this campaign won't turn into a COMPLETE shitstorm.

Emperor be praised,

Private Grask Harnlin, 75th Liongrad Spirejumpers

Day 6 of the Olenus Primaris Campaign

Sorry for the delay in writing again, journal. Got deployed on a four-day recon mission on the outskirts of Capital Hive. According to the briefing we were issued before setting out, the general staff's strategy calls for us to cut the head off the serpent, and then advance on Hives Secundus and Tertius once Capital Hive is secured. Thanks to our little convoy interception earlier this week, the defenders will be underequipped, and easy-pickings. Our little recon mission confirmed that. We dropped into the outskirts by Valkyrie, and then headed into the mid-hive's outer sectors. The wasteland beyond the hive walls was hot, sweaty, and dusty, and every time I felt like I was about to pass out from heat exhaustion, Sarge punched me in the arm to keep me alert.
>>
>>21083828
As soon as we got inside, we started skulking around. We couldn't guarantee that the locals didn't see us; it's a hive. There's only so many places where there aren't people. But we managed to slip in without actually being sighted by the rebel PDF, and that's more than I can say for most of this strategic clusterfuck of a campaign so far. As we advanced into the hive, we went over our objectives again. The primary objective was to confirm the location of a batch of heavy artillery batteries for later destruction by the 957th Stormtrooper Regiment, and any major infrastructure facilities within the midhive's western side. When we found the guns, we were awed at the sight: Walkers, a bit bigger than a Dreadnought of the Adeptus Astartes. Sorenson mentioned these things. Heavy artillery walkers, called Behemoths. Shittier guns than our own Basilisks, slow, ponderous, and with no ability to defend themselves at close range, but with THREE frakking artillery cannons. Shorter ranged and lower-calibre than Basilisks, but with enough cannons in one place, eventually calibre just won't matter. The Sarge wanted us to just mark them on the map and then move on. We made a note to tell Imperial Intelligence that these things were a frakking priority target if the hive is to be taken.
>>
>>21083834
We headed further into the hive, and up a few levels. This is when we got jumped. Rebel militia, just a bunch of hab-workers with shitty stub-revolvers and some autopistols. Not even any body armor. The only problem was that we were on their turf, and they knew it well. Corporal Brisan ate a facefull of autopistol ammo in the initial ambush, and it wasn't long before we heard the bastards calling for help. We didn't stick around to see what would happen, but we had a feeling it had to do with the sound of heavy tanks. After almost an hour of laying low in an abandoned hab-block that looked like it had been bombed-out during the revolution in Capital Hive, we eventually worked up the nerve to poke our heads out and take a look. Turns out, enemy infantry were searching for us. Not militia; actual, frontline rebel PDF infantry. Disciplined bastards, from the look of it. Lots of calls to keep intervals wide. We took the opportunity to slip out the back and try to work our way back out to our LZ to vox for pick-up.

It was a relatively quick trip out, but as soon as we cleared the hive proper and made our way back down, we found ourselves the target of an aeronautica strike from uphive. Somehow, the bastards managed to pinpoint our location and called in an airstrike. Nobody got hurt, but frak if my hearing's not busted in my left ear. They must have assumed we were dead, because there was no follow-up patrol or recon on the area. We made our way back to our initial LZ and voxed for pick-up. Sorenson's been jumpy on the ride back, says he 'saw something' in the ruins after the airstrike. There was a lot of dust kicked up, and I didn't see what he was talking about, but there was apparently something 'out there.' With horns.
>>
>>21083838
I told him not to worry, but I can't shake the feeling that he DID see something. Something worse than a few rebel with stylized helmets.

I need to rest. I'm jumping at shadows now, too. No reason to fret, just a bit freaked from the airstrike and the recon.

Day 12 of the Olenus Primaris Campaign

Emperor be praised, help has arrived! The Adeptus Astartes are here!

Sarge just got word of this last night, wanted to keep it a surprise for the men. The Ultramarines have arrived to reinforce the assault! They're already touching down. Word is we're looking at two companies of Space Marines, complete with armored support. These are apparently the First and Second Companies of the Chapter, so we're looking at the best of the best here. We might wrap up the campaign by the end of the week. Still no word on additional supplies, but maybe we won't need them.

The Ultramarines' First Company has confirmed that they will be setting up shop in our camp here, in preparation for the assault on Capital Hive. The plan of attack is for the 75th Liongrad and 3rd Sadettin to drop into the mid-hive and pave the way for a ground attack by the 957th Stormtroopers, and the 195th Cadian Armored. Some of the Penal Legionnaires, including the Marston Roughriders, will be held in reserve in case we need the support. The Balaster fellows are...scary, to say the frakking least. The Kilbecks will also be hanging back in the event that we have to resort to siege tactics to crack the defenses around Capital Hive. The Ultramarines will be supporting the ground attack, while their Second Company drops into the upper hive by drop pod along with us and the Sadettin. It's an immense honor to serve alongside Space Marines. Hopefully, we can show them how we roll in Liongrad and do the Emperor proud by living up to the standards of the Adeptus Astartes. Maybe we'll get lucky and show 'em up in the field.
>>
>>21084262
We're prepping for the attack tomorrow morning. I've yet to see any of their faces, but I have this feeling that the Ultramarines are watching us for some sign of weakness - no doubt to try and help us shore it up and bestow their wisdom upon us should we falter somehow.

Day 19 of the Olenus Primaris Campaign

Shit's gone to hell.

The Ultramarines? Traitors. Word is they're Alpha Legion, but I can't confirm that. I've heard of them. Infiltrators. The rebels have been spotted engaging them, too, but that could be mistaken identity or something. I don't know. Squad's holed up, and Sorenson's trying to raise the rest of the regiment on the vox. We're in Capital Hive right now, hiding in a hab-block. We've seen Alpha Legionnaires in Ultramarine colors, and others wearing Alpha Legion insignia falling into formation with them. It was a bloody massacre, the rest of the platoon's gone and we think the rest of the company's in similar situations right now. They haven't found us again quite yet.

Sorenson freaked when he saw the Alpha Legionnaires. Says they're what he saw in the dust back in that airstrike. I have to credit the poor bastard, he's got sharp eyes. It's the only reason he saw that Traitor Marine after that bomb almost landed on us. Why the Alpha Legionnaire was there, watching us, I can't say. All I know is

Shit

Rbell militia
>>
>>21084554
Alright, the rebels are scared shitless, just like we are. The Alpha Legion is ripping up our forces on the outskirts, and the rebel PDF have been desperately trying to hold ground against them as well. The Guard lacks a home-field advantage, but it's not doing the rebels any good either. These Alpha Legion frakkers are smart. Sarge struck a deal with this militia squad - They use their local knowledge to get us someplace relatively secure, and we watch their backs on the way there. They've agreed. We're heading out now.

Should I fall in battle, I hope this journal is found. I refuse to let my memory be reduced to a frakking casualty report.

Day 23 of the Olenus Primaris Campaign

Alright, journal. We just had the most intense faceoff with the heretics yet. We went four days without seeing hide or hair of them. Got ourselves to a relatively secure point. There's about...sixty armed men here. Looks like a mix of rebel PDF, rebel militia, Stormtroopers from the 957th, my squad, some Sadettin troopers who got separated from the rest of their platoon, and a pair of Roughriders who managed to break contact from Alpha Legionnaires that wiped out their unit and get away. We're all holed up in a shitty apartment building. Everyone's watching the alleyways or staying away from the windows. Sorenson's had a hard time raising any Guard units on the vox, and the rebels are all suspicious of us.

Now, about our faceoff with the Traitor Astartes. One of our lookouts spotted three of them heading up the street. Rather bold of them for a bunch of infiltrators, so I suggested checking the other approaches to the hab-block. Sure enough, there was another six of the bastards, coming from two directions, two teams of three. So we had a batch of nine Alpha Legionnaires, coming from three directions. Every team had a Chaos Marine packing a Reaper Autocannon, and then two with those damnable boltguns. We immediately opted to make a stand, because they'd caught us in a three-way pincer maneuver. Any attempt to get out of here before they got to us would just result in our men being cut down by those autocannons. Sarge said he'd draw their fire to the second floor on the west side of the hab-block, and then the Sadettin boys would bring a heavy bolter they'd set up to bear on 'em.
>>
>>21089623
This is when I mentioned I was carrying one of those plasma guns we'd looted from the convoy several weeks ago. I'd had a plasma flask on hand to load it with. Just in case, y'know? I volunteered to try and take out one of the Chaos Marines with it. If it backfired, I'd die, and if it didn't, we'd have a dead Chaos Marine. Either way, someone gets fried. Sarge drew their fire as planned, and then the heavy bolter pinned one of the Alpha Legionnaires down. I got myself to a good angle, charged the plasma gun to maximal, and hit him dead-on through the side of the head. His head promptly disappeared in a flash of plasma fire, and I noted that it smelled vaguely of burning flesh.
>>
>>21089637
The other Alpha Legionnaires noticed I had just killed one of their comrades, so they immediately redirected their fire to me. I was pinned down for a second, right up until Kolgin got himself to a decent position and popped off a krak missile, killing a Chaos Marine with a dead-on shot. Some of the militia and rebel PDF troopers got themselves killed. The stupid frakkers tried to make a run for it out the back when the last Chaos Marine on that side caught them and mowed them down with his autocannon. We almost had an opening for an escape. The Stormtroopers opted to head down to the ground floor and mow him down while we covered them from the windows. I hit another Chaos Marine with a few shots from my plasma gun. Think I wounded him. Looked like his armor was damaged, and the traitor was limping before he fell back. The rest of the Traitors made their way back down the road they came from, and the Stormtroopers finished off the Chaos Havoc that was blocking our escape route. We made our way in the opposite direction, planting a few demolition charges in case they tried to break through the building and pursue us. If we were chased, the charges either got a couple of them or scared them off. Or at least slowed them down. Either way, the rest of us are holed up in another hab-block down the street from the last one, and the hive's lighting systems are dimming, to signify nightfall.
>>
>>21089661
No contact with the enemy since the last encounter, and we're all on edge. We keep jumping at shadows. Word is that a general retreat order has been given, but there's no confirmation on that. Sorenson's having a hard time getting the vox to work straight, and we think the battery's about to die. We need to scavenge something. The rebels say they know where we can get some spare charge packs. Sorenson's willing to do some tech-heresy to get them to be compatible with the vox-caster. The Omnissiah's not going to like it, but it's our best chance at getting in touch with the rest of the regiment - or anyone else who can hear us.

Day 24 of the Olenus Primaris Campaign

Alright, the rebels came through for us. We managed to work our way down to the loading docks in the mid-hive. We can see artillery and tank-fire from here, and from the looks of it, the fighting's getting more and more distant. We're going to be cut off from the rest of the Guard if that's an actual retreat. Anyways, the loading docks - we managed to get our hands on a large number of lasgun charge packs, so we restocked on ammunition. And, get this, we managed to find some vox-caster charge packs as well. No need for tech-heresy on Sorenson's part, thank the Throne (I'm sure he's happy, too. Nobody grows up in a Mechanicus family without a bit of a Machine Cultist outlook on things). Sorenson popped them in, and apparently we're far enough away from the central mid-hive to get a clear signal.

It's complete madness out there. The Guard are all being caught up between Chaos Legionnaires and possible cases of friendly fire. But from the sounds of it, the Alpha Legion isn't the only Chaos force on-planet. There's Khornate warriors, too. World Eaters. The campaign's getting worse by the minute. Thankfully, from the sounds of it, the World Eaters are out near Hive Tertius - they're a ways away from here. Signals are being screwy, even without the hive's general interference. From the sounds of it, Alpha Legion's running a MASSIVE misinformation campaign, and several regiments have dropped off the grid entirely. Word is the command Leviathan was somehow captured or destroyed, but half of what we're getting is rumors and the rest is being caught in snippets. It's hard to differentiate between the Traitor Marine falsehoods and the actual Imperial signals out there.
>>
>>21089939
We're digging in here at the hive loading docks. Anyone not wearing Imperial or rebel insignias is to be fired upon as a Chaos cultist, as per Sarge's standing orders. He's assumed overall command of our little ad-hoc platoon. The rebels don't like the idea of shooting possible civilians, but at this point, we can't take any chances. ANYONE could be a Chaos infiltrator. I'm on watch in the next ten minutes, but we all agree on one thing: We need to get out of Capital Hive. We need to secure transportation and find a rally point where we can link up with the rest of the Guard. We can't stay here. The rebels are willing to come with us, but only if we vouch for them and try to secure them amnesty in the face of Imperial justice. Sorenson and some of the Stormtroopers are looking around the motor pools here in the loading docks. We found a few half-tracks, fully fueled. We can jury-rig some of our heavy weapons onto them and roll out with a couple of shiny new gun trucks. With any luck, we'll be out of here by tomorrow morning.

The Stormtroopers are clustering together like a pack of rats in heat, but the Roughriders and rebels are starting to warm up to us, I think. The Sadettin, too. We've also gone over our remaining supplies. Spread out evenly, we have about enough food to last us all another week or so, and we're running out of ammo for all of our weapons. Maintenance kits are running low on sacred oils, and everyone's in a generally-foul mood. And rightfully so. Kolgin and Kup have been talking about where this campaign goes, even IF we manage to link up with survivors from other units. It's not a pretty sight. Units assigned to take Hive Secundus and Hive Tertius aren't reporting in at all, and word is that the M4PPAR are either going rogue, or rotating into the other armored units. If we're short a tank regiment already, it's bad. We need everything we can get.
