It's really like worrying if people with uncanny mathematical ability are going to fuck up the world or not (did someone say banksters?), really. You set your phone down and put it in your mind to respond to the messages, and one of your English books on your desk catches your eye. You've been using it for this semester; it's an anthology of famous short stories and poetry, with threads for analysis and various references. At just a glance, one of the last works you read in the collection begins to coalesce in your mind; at first, you mistake it for memory, but it begins to surprise you, and the words become clear as if the story was set in front of you again. It's not necessarily total recall—and you doubt, in places, your own perception—but considering you only read the work once, it's a bit impressive.

You place your hand on the book to open it, then pause, given a stroke of curiosity. The title page is in front of you, and you look at it, then through it, pressing your vision to the next page and beyond. Your eyes ache, and your head aches, and the words become blurry as you press further into the book, scanning through its works with the cover closed. Slowly, you tilt your head back, and “look” upward, still attempting to focus on the words beneath each page, until you can discern nothing but black against white, and darkness creeping in from the edges of your vision; you gasp, and almost fall forward into your desk, catching yourself and instinctively placing a hand against your forehead.

This is no "seeing through walls with my senses," but goddamn is it a good start. This is pretty impressive stuff we've got on hand.

I think it'd be interesting to see what our Perception can do when we're not straining ourselves. Any "normal" person can make assumptions on how a person they're meeting for the first time will act based on their appearance, mannerisms, posture, and so on, so if we have boosted Perception we should be able to make pretty good deductions as to what kind of people we're dealing with as we meet them. We can try this at soccer and with these two dudes who have been harassing our poor, shy bookworm girl.

Elbows planted on the desk in front of your laptop, you take to massaging your temples for a few moments, using your hands to shield your eyes from the fluorescent light above. Definitely a good start. You were able to press through a few pages without moving the book's cover, and you think you might have made out a few words while looking at the ceiling; the incident was a bit fuzzy. You can't tell whether or not you're getting better, but improvement, you think, will come from slow and easy practice rather than pushing yourself to the limit each time. Don't want to have a stroke, or something.

You shake your head for the hundredth time today as you make your way toward the door to your room; you flick the lights off, return to your desk, then flip your laptop open. If you're good at perception, let's try to gather a bit of information. You open a pair of local news streams—one is synchronized with the television news network, and the other is a playlist of top stories starting last week—and slip your headphones over your ears, scrolling through text articles while you listen and watch in cascaded windows.

There are brief lapses in the information, where your mind stutters with confusion, but for the most part, it feels as if you're watching the videos seperately, and giving the articles your whole mind. Your first pause comes when you find the man who you think attacked you last Sunday. His corpse was found in an alley—the street isn't listed, but it's noted to be a few blocks down from your campus—next to a bloodied baseball bat. Identified as Alan Wilkinson, in his forties, inebriated at the time of death, no dependents. The article mentions that there's no specific evidence pointing to a killer; you're not sure if the search has been dropped or not.

You start paying attention to the local crime reports. Only one catches your eye, though; both news channels and one of the written reports, between them, note three different instances of -ridiculous- murder cases.

The remains of three humans were located—two in their homes, and one in a neighborhood across town—with little attempt made to hide them. In all three cases, the bodies were almost completely destroyed, with the text article citing the remains as “pulpy”, and noting that even their bones were reduced to dust and scattered about the scenes. The victims were identifiable through their DNA; they're linked by nothing other than the fact that they're all female, and even then there's a significant age difference. The killer, though, assuming all three crimes can be attributed to the same person, has left nothing; no signs of a struggle, no fingerprints, and police haven't even found a hair. Strikes you as a bit... off.

You think to move on to medical news, but aren't sure how you'd pick up on supernatural activity in that sphere; medicine has always seemed a bit arcane to you. Instead, you sit back for a moment, and close your straining eyes; you've only been watching and reading for a few minutes, but it feels like much, much longer. Voices continue softly droning from your headphones as you contemplate your next course of action.

Miles apart, actually. The first woman was a journalist in her early thirties, living alone in what you've always thought was a relatively nice apartment complex on the south side of the city; there's a pretty comfortable distance between you and that one. The second was in her mid-twenties, and wasn't too far from that one. She lived with her boyfriend in a similar complex, and was found in bits and pieces on the back porch. The third, fifteen years old, found dead almost halfway across the city from where she lived; a bit closer to you, but not yet close enough for you to panic. Some of the people I've visited, we got to talking, and they told me stories about what they'd felt, and the conclusion I'm coming to now is that I'm another one of them.” Nelson says. “You see them too, right? Places in the mind, drawing you towards locations that you don't know, that you've never been to? Each one of them's another one of us Origin-folk, and more of them are waking up to it all the time.”

You begin to speak, but stagger. Your perception is deluded, and an odd feeling of drowsiness comes about you as the scent of this place becomes evident again.

"There have been a couple of murders around here lately, where the bodies were left all, uh... pulpy. Have you met anyone with a power like that?" You ask, followed by a yawn.

"Couldn't say. Not everyone disclosed their words, and a few of the ones I heard were a little questionable." He responds. "Bugs me, though, that we'd use these gifts to kill, when there's so much to be explored."

"How many of us would you guess there are?"

"Lots. There's no way to tell."

"You know a lot about this... how can... How can I get back into contact with you?" You stagger again.

"You're an interesting one." He chuckles. "Never did get your name, but it's alright. If it's supposed to happen, it'll happen. Take care of yourself, then..."

The dreamer's words trail off, and you roll over in bed, opening your eyes to your familiar room. Orange, late-afternoon sunlight shines through the cracks in your window blinds, and you feel strangely refreshed.

You're reminded of what he said about the dots; other Originals, and as you think about them, the closest one comes back to your memory, moving about across campus.

Guess it's time for some detective work. We may not be in the same league of power as other Origin humans, but at the very least we should be able to use our Perception to gather information on the other Origin human without drawing -too- much attention to ourselves.

It's the weekend, so let's use the soccer practice as a means to both test how our Perception ability effects our physical activities and the other girls as a way to hide ourselves when going out into public. If the dot singles Origin humans out, then it would be best to make sure we're not easily recognized as the "other" Origin human on campus. If the other Origin human follows his/her dot to a group of girls then at least he/she has to narrow their search further from there.

First thing's first; you tend to your morning routine and change into athletic shorts and tennis shoes, electing for an outfit in preparation for soccer practice later. A quick check of the cell phone alerts you to a text from Elissa: "Practice on the north field at noon."

As far as who it is, you don't have a clue; all you know is that it's another Original, and that's assuming the Dreamer was right. The "dots", then, may be a characteristic of all Originals, so if you were to meet one, they'd know something wasn't right with you, even if they didn't know what the indicator represented.

You remember it pretty well, and a look at the news sites would corroborate the fact that only the fourteen year old is recorded to have disappeared prior to her being found murdered.

You could do more research, go for another walk, get breakfast, wait for practice, or just hang out in the residence hall lobby to pass the time. There's also the matter of an Original on campus who you could feasibly seek out; you wonder if they're thinking the same thing.
