[11 days since the invasion began]
...
You put your bolter on your knees as you sit down on the iron bench, waiting for other brothers to get into the dropship and lift off as soon as possible. You've failed to predict how this battle will go and now as a result you are stuck here, almost 20 miles away from where the real fighting is happening. But you and your men will soon be there, if the Emperor will so that these lazy pilots actually put some effort into piloting. Damn chapter serfs, they always need a kick to start working. You link up your vox caster with drop-ships' communications system.
>Arcon, are you there? Report!
For a while you hear nothing but static, then suddenly there is a short reply from Arcon, Captain of the 3rd Company:
>They engaged us! Damn, I didn't expect that, they have Sorcerer with them! He casted something, Demetros and Pishar from 7th Squad are now comatose, we retreated and are regrouping. Should we proceed to engage the warlock or wait for you?
>>
>>21569102
Wait for us
>>
>Brethorius and the rest of the Chapter is rapidly approaching your position Arcon, hold positions and counter-attack once they catch up to you!

>Will do so. We'll try to maintain positions and maybe outflank him if possible.
You cut the vox and command the pilot:
>Fly us, dammit!

roll d100 for your travel to the eastern part of Auctumnus.
------
Strategical briefing:
------
Your force: 4 Companies + 3 Predators and Retributor Pattern Baneblade

Enemy force: 110~ Traitors supported by 6500~ followers of the Dark Gods + Sorcerer

Neutral force: Besieged Arbitre fortress with unknown garrison, doesn't reply to vox communications and believe that we are just a smart enemy maneuvre to trick them.

There are 2 warbands each of about 30 Traitors roaming the countryside beyond Auctumnus. Orbital scan fized their locations:
>Warband Alpha: last spotted desecrating shrine of Saint Mathew
>Warband Beta: last spotted fortifying Weather Cathedral in the Northern mountain range

Your flight is relatively peaceful. Flying over one of the burning cathedrals you received attention from enemy AA heavy bolter fixed on the roof, but it missed and escort fliers pounded whole building to dust.

Finally, you see a pleasantly grey blob on the ground - a whole company of Ghosts standing together. As soon as you jump to the ground, Arcon and Brethorius approaches you.

Sorcerer knows that taking a Company worth of marines head on is a good way to meet the Gods sooner than he would like to, so he is hiding within Adeptus Ministorium building, however it's not a real church, but more like a school for local children. over 20 floors, lots of classrooms and a maze of corridors. If you will try to flank the building, he will have eye of sight to all the major streets and will be able to use his dark arts on your column. If you will decide to do a deep flanking it might take an hour or more, Arbitres might fall by then. Going in is also damn dangerous. You could probably try to destroy the building, but it's gigantic and will take a lot of punishment until it will collapse, giving enough time for the Sorcerer to escape and strike from some other position. What do you do?

You get the feeling you are being stalled... Traitors might be mad, but they know, that they are dead. You have four times their numbers + support from the orbit.

>We know not what kind of powers Sorcerer has, but he indeed might be capable of some devilry. Other than that cultists have fired a few missiles at us, however nothing serious. We have not yet met serious resistance from real Traitors, but I have no doubt they will have at least a few meltaguns. To put it short - nothing to seriously harm Fortress of Vengeance, but they might take out our Predators with a little bit of luck.
Brethorius spits some acid on the ground.
>I think we need to take the bastard head on. I don't like rushing tactics, but he'll make us trouble if we let him go alive.
Arcon frowns:
>We have no casualties yet, except for Prishar and Demetros who should get back to their senses, I hope. I would like to keep it this way unless we can help it. Chapter lost a lot of blood in the past few years. This is not worth, not this Sorcerer, not this city, not even this fucking planet.

>>21569768
I agree. Push up under the cover of all our armour units. The techpriests may have you believe otherwise, but vehicles can be replaced easier than brothers.
>>
Quick sitrep of the situation, by my count we should have on the ground:
430 tactical marines
23 assault marines
1 retribution baneblade
3 predators
13 Rhinos
1 Land raider
16 SM bikes
14 apothecaries
17 techmarines
6 Revenants
Our 4 Shadow Guard

Our current main objective is to break the siege of the Adeptus Arbites fortress a few km away, strength of enemy force around fortress unknown.

And then there's this sorcerer douche and his lackeys.

I say carry on towards the fortress, and as soon as we're a safe distance away, bombard the sorcerer's building from space.

As I mentione previously, lances will level a few blocks, not a single building. You have not installed precision bombardment weaponry in your ships. However if you want to do that, i'd suggest retreating at least a few km back. Also, bear in mind heavy civilian casualties that such bombardment would lead to, there are still plenty of them hiding in the houses. But on the other hand, this would give you a clean victory. As a matter of fact, you have orbital superiority - you can destroy ALL enemy forces just with orbital lances.

>>21569736
No idea, scouts haven't followed after sorcerer. Very well might be, this building looks like something what could have a shelter underneath it.

>>21569747
Thank, non-native speaker, I always appreciate the criticism.
>>
>>21569810

I say push to the school and partially surround it with armour and begin bombardment flushing the enemy toward the Fortress that is under siege in an attempt to get the defenders to pick them off or have the traitors weaken them enough for us to take both in 1 push.
>>
>>21569842
Lances are worthless to us if we cannot advance. We will not risk our scouts lifeblood needlessly for this lone traitor.

We will let the dog run. There will be another time to bring this coward to the Emperor's justice. For now, the Arbites demand our attention.

Numbers: correct.

Regarding the Sorcerer - he is between you and Arbitre fortress. That's why I mentioned an option to flank him here:
>>21569662
---
>>21569809
How many men do you throw into the assault? Schola has 4 entrances on this side, wide enough for 2 marines to pass at once, but in front of it there is an open plaza.
>>
>>21569842
Damn...I'm not willing to risk Children, but it'll be a slaughterhouse in there.

My vote is to get the Assault Marines up to the top floor and the Tacticals on the bottom. Trap them between our forces.
>>
>>21569842
Bombard the building with our Retribution Baneblade, the twin Earthshakers should make short work of it.
>>
>>21569842
>>21569894
Alright.
Fire some baneblade lead into the building.
>>
>>21569896
Weakling. This planet's spawn is irrelevant.

>>21569909
>>21569901
Half measures avail us nothing. We advance. Then order this area cleansed with orbital fire.
>>
>>21569997
Very funny.

The awkward part comes when this agri-world feeds half the subsector, including our own, currently famine-ridden home planet.

Not /really/ the kind of situation where you wanna kill all the farmers.
>>
>>21570024
You get can more farmers. And the home world only matters as much as it churns out recruit fodder. A death world would do just fine if it came to that.

Besides, who's going to miss a shelter or two of war orphans or scholam children? In proximity to a Chaos sorceror, no less!
>>
>>21570117
Skargan said the lethal range for an orbital bombardment to a Space Marine is a 'few' kilometres. If we assume this means about 4km, that means to total death area is around 50.25 km^2.

New York city has a population density of around 10,500/km^2. A hive city is most likely even denser than that.

So you're willing to wipe out at /least/ half a million Imperial citizens to kill this one Sorcerer?
>>
>>21570207
Is that a trick question?

The civilians are irrelevant, the Sorceror needs to be dead, and our task force needs to stop wasting time.

Besides, 20,000 people who aren't Chapter brothers for 1 traitor? Good odds. Not as though there are any holy relics in the area...or anything of value beyond dubiously loyal civilians. If they're still here, then they deserve what they're getting.
>>
>>21570241
Make that half a million. The point stands.

You give orders and climb on top of the building in front of doomed Schola. Extatius approaches you with sadness on his face.
>Milord, are you sure about this? There very well might be innocents in there.
You just look at him, without taking off your helmet and answer, trying not to show what you feel:
>That's the way it has to be done. If we get that sorcerer, we save thousands of lives that would be extinguished by him. Emperor will understand. This is my decision.
>If we get him, that is.
Extatius' words get interrupted by light vibration that slowly grows until it becomes a mini earthquake, shaking the building you are standing upon from the very foundation. You smile.
>"Fortress of Vengeance" is on the battlefield. His fate is sealed.
With a terrible crash small, three-storey building explodes into a fountain of masonry and rubble as Retributor makes a way for itself, ignoring the streets. It is about a hundred meters away from you, rolling towards the Schola, but you can hear its atomic engine humming as if it was inside your ear. Actium, Techmarine commanding the tank logs into your vox channel and reports:
>Target in sights, lord! Main guns, preparing to fire in 3... 2...
Blast from the first gun propels a 30kg shell into the schola. It hits the facade, annihilating frontal side of the building.
>Secondary main gun firing in 3...

You notice a bright flash of purple light and then see a lightning coming out of the ruined schola. You don't need to use your psychic senses to understand that Sorcerer is making his move.
>>
>>21570267
Well, it worked. Hit him with everything now that he's been stupid enough to show his face instead of running.

Purple lightning hits "Fortress of Vengeance", making adamantite plates whine from sudden heat of cosmic proportions. Metal starts burning from the warpfire attack and you with awe realise that any lesser tank would have been molten to slag already. This sorcerer, whatever or whoever he is, gave his best with this spell, but it done nothing more than leave ugly marks and deformed metal on the frontal armour. After two seconds of sustained lightning he understood his failure and with his last strength(being a psyker yourself you very well realise what a drain it must be to melt adamantite) he changed his target, now instead targeting the tracks of humming beast. This time sorcerer was more successful - crackling and screaming, chains holding the tracks exploded and melted. With the last few crackles purple lightning disappeared amongst the dust clouds from the previous round when all of your men emerge from behind their cover and open fire upon the position from which spell was cast.
