Hey, /tg/. Just happened to come online for the first time in about a week and I saw this.

I'd like to take a minute to apologize for abandoning this quest and for, frankly, acting like a cunt. After AC-Guy and myself had our little falling out I pretty much rage-quit the internet for a little while, and ended up getting involved in the storm relief stuff for Sandy. About the time I ended up going back home, I discovered that things weren't quite as bad as I thought they were going to be locally and began working on getting my community back in shape.

Eventually, I came back to /tg/ and Saw AC-Guy running the quest, and lo and behold it's good. I feel bad for not finishing what I started.... but at this point it's kinda too late for me to come back. Plus I was really just cribbing everything off of his notes anyway.

As far as the hows and the whys behind me leaving... Yeah, it was pretty much exactly what AC-Guy said. I mean, maybe he could've calmed down a touch more and I could have tried apologizing, but when it's about 90% my fault clarifying certain details just feels like making excuses.

So, I'm gonna disappear back into anon after this, but I just felt like I should apologize to the fans for the drama and AC-Guy for leaving him with more work. I would've done this sooner but.... well frankly I didn't have much time for internet in the last few weeks. So maybe it's for the best AC-Guy took over anyway.

"Not completely." She answers. "I could start teaching you about magic circles and thaumaturgy. In theory you could o anything with that, even if it would be more difficult and time consuming than a normal casting.

"If I'm so specialized then honing that craft seems like the most logical route, especially if it's so potent." I respond after a moments thought. "You're better than I'll ever be in general practice, so it's not like we're losing much on that front if I put off learning Thaumaturgy."

"Alright then." she says. We spend almost an hour talking theory, and she expresses surprise in how my casting works. apparently it's unusual for a spell to be formed without casting. "It's more than unusual." She says. "It should be impossible. The framework is something that doesn't normally exist. casting is split into two parts: creating the framework of the spell being cast, and the casting itself." I nod along. "Things like Wands and Crests can make it faster and easier to the point of almost non-existence. But there's still something there. But you're saying that the framework is already there?"

"It's like.... a bullet." I respond. "I make the spell, but the spell itself is like a package. It's not a thing I have to cast. Once the spell exists though, I can just load it and fire at any time without having to think about it."

"Really?"

"Yeah. you said activating a magic circuit is like flipping a switch? For me it's more like slamming the hammer of the gun down. It shoots a spell that's already there and turns off."

I start by summoning Archer's swords.

"Two at once?" Rin asks, with a slightly quirked eyebrow.

"Not quite." I respond. "I don't know why, but that felt more like they were two halves of the same spell."

She nods, and I summon Berserker's Sword, leaving it on the bed with Archer's blades. I summon a Katana I saw in a museum once, and Assassin's blade as well. After a while, I realize that I don't really know that many blades and just start summoning knives, like the ones in the kitchen. I get up to about a dozen blades total before I really start to feel the strain.

"Huh. So you can maintain several, but you can only summon two at once?"

"I'm not even doing two at once, just one after another very quickly." I respond. "I think I have to do it one at a time."

Rin nods. "How many can you prepare then?"

I meditate, and focus, trying to see how many patterns I can manage at once.

".... I think I can do about fifteen different patterns." I say. "But if I just copy a pattern I've already done over and over I can do almost twice that."

"On Phantasms?"

"Yeah. I think I can just throw Knives forever." I respond with a shrug.

"Well, you can do swords and knives." Rin says. "Can you do anything else?"

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, you could argue that from a magical perspective a sword is a really big knife, or vice versa. Clearly it's the closest to your origin if it's that easy for you, but what about other things?"

"Like a spear?" I ask, thinking back to Lancer's weapon.

"Yeah, let's start there." She says. I focus, and manage to manifest it as well, and then take a few panting breaths.

"It's a lot harder." I say. "And I don't think this one's as good as the others."

"How about non weapons?"

"Like what?"

"A chair?" She answers with a shrug.

I focus on the idea in my head. a chair.

A wooden chair.

Nothing complicated, certainly nothing like what I've already done.

And yet....

"Somehow I don't think that's a good idea."

"Come on." She says impatiently. "Just try it. It can't be that bad."

I take a deep breath and focus one eye inward. Then both eyes. I trace the pattern in my mind, and begin to shape the process.

I can feel a hostile gaze on me as I do so. I ignore it, and continue my work.

It's there. The chair exists. But then I feel a sharp pain i9n my head. I haven't even begun to project it yet, but I can somehow already see the chair breaking, cracks all over it's surface.

All the way into the soul of the chair.

This Chair. I can project it, but it's clearly not something I'm supposed to do.

This Chair. I start to cock the hammer back. I release the hammer, and I feel it.

A knife. A knife hits the chair, and the chair in my mind explodes.

Rin stands up from where she took cover behind the bed and grabs a knife off the floor. A knife in the middle of the wreckage, with a note attached. A single word.

"I don't get it either." I respond, raising my hands defensively. "It's like someone else went into the projection while I was forming it and made the chair explode. So I summoned an exploding chair." I point at the knife. "And they left a knife and a note behind."

Rin looks at them. When I let go of the projection, the knife remains.

"How? Why?" Rin asks. "It just doesn't make sense, unless there's someone with a psychotic hatred of chairs and some kind of a Marble Phantasm....." She looks at the wreckage disbelievingly.

I dunno why people took that literally. That was foreshadowing and narrative buildup for Shirou to break that exact rule. In fact, every single "rule" is proven to be breakable, very easily, in the Heaven's Feel route. The whole route is about breaking all the rules of the Grail War.

I think one of Tsukihime's somewhat failings is that it has to overcome the challenge of combining a gritty dark world with a female-lead who is completely unrelatable. Fate doesn't really waste much time with the downtime though the environment was similar - it was all action all the time. Tsukihime during the downtime didn't do that great a job of developing the bonds between the characters when it set out with that as a goal and splitting the focus probably drove people away. Fate just cut that crap out and just went full bore with the plot letting the dojins and other fan-material fill in the personal relationships.

Like, really, the only reason why I love Tsukihime (and Fate) so much is because there's so much adorable goofy shit from the fans accompanying it.

While I'm rather fond of the personal relationships angle of Tsukihime, I can see your point. I think the biggest problem I had with Tsukihime is that most of the routes were re-treads of stuff we already knew.

I rather liked Ciel as a character (Someone being able to save someone they care about from committing the atrocities they once did by killing them is pretty heavy stuff), but her route was a shitty retread of Arcueid's. Same with Hisui's route: it mostly centered on another heroine's machinations entirely, and Hisui's affections are only auxiliary to the plot.

Personally, if-and-when we get a Tsukihime redo, the game should have each of its routes focus more heavily on a single them, revealing more of the world each time.

(Arcueid = learning about the Moonlit World, Ciel = learning about the Reincarnation stuff, Sacchin = accepting our monstrous nature, Akiha = we have another sibling, Hisui = learning to face a horrible past, Kohaku = learning to move on from the past)

The original game tried that, but got too mneandering. perhaps a tweak-up of the scenario a bit?

I argue that you're just comparing FSN and Tsuki to eachother and lamenting the differences. The two VNs are two different genres all together. Tsuki was thriller-horror with low action more pondering while Fate is adventure-fantasy that is 80% FIGHT 15% sempai 5% delicious bisexual sex/3dcg dragon magic.
