I might be feeling a bit strong on this, but one of the moments with the most emotional impact for me in F/Z was when Waiver Velvet stood before the triumphant Gilgamesh and refused to betray his oath of fealty to Alexander. That took courage, enough that Gil let him get away with it.

Taking advantage of silence, I begin reading the book I found in Kiritsugu's locker. Inside are lists of spells and components, Alchemical recipes for magic poisons and their cures, lists on guns, calibers, and the proper use of them.

There's a disturbing amount on effective methods of hiding/disposing of corpses.

Listed as well are a variety of martial arts techniques, grabs and their escapes, recommended reading on anatomy for things like pressure points and bone-breaking.

Most of the book is dry and analytical, straightforward in it's presentation of the facts. There is the occasional note scribbled in the margins clarifying certain points or referencing other works and documents.

The work, taken as a collective, makes Kiritsugu's combat philosophy very clear: to win as quickly, cleanly, and efficiently as possible. Exploit weaknesses, fight dirty. Never underestimate the value of moral, and in making the enemy lack it.

It doesn't take me long at all to realize why Altria hated him so much. I would expect to find a passage mocking things like chivalry on the battlefield, were it not obvious he found discussing it too stupid to even contemplate.

But I find other things that make me realize. Little hints of the man I knew as well: in how to calm hostages during a rescue, in the importance of understanding the consequences of actions. About how a clean conscious is just as important as a clean get-away.

I go and wake Saber, before we collect Tosaka from her room. Tempting as bringing some of dad's equipment with is, it might not be wise to try and use anything from the locker without a through understanding of it's abilities.

We end up leaving a few minutes later. Along the way, I ask Rin about her familiars.

"No, nothing suspicious like before. I think Caster killed one for going too close to the temple, but other than that, nothing." She shrugs. "Why?"

"Nothing, just rather not have any unwelcome surprises tonight." I respond as we walk along. I notice her lagging slightly behind. "Something wrong?"

We sit with Taiga, and for almost two hours we wait in silence for news. Rin steps outside for a moment partway through, and comes back a moment later. Apparently Rider's officially hers now.

After a long, tense wait, Kirei comes out of the back. "The operation was successful." He says briefly. "She's going to be out of it for a little while, but she should be safe to go home now, if you take a cab."

"Really?" Taiga asks surprised.

Kirei nods. "It wasn't a particularly invasive procedure, it was just too close to sensitive areas to risk without a specialist."

Lancer helps her walk out a few moments later, and Taiga goes to use Kirei's phone to call a cab. "You're all better now. You can go home." Sakura smiles at him, but before she can say anything-

"Shirou's home. I just blew hers up." A voice corrects as the doors explode inwards.

"Archer?!" Caster says confused. "This wasn't the plan-"

"Neither was me killing Assassin. If you girls hurry on back to the temple you might be in time to save your blushing husband to be from dieing." I can feel Caster shock as she heals Saber and vanishes. Archer then plugs Kirei with three arrows as he dives for cover and rushes me with his swords drawn.

I don't hesitate, summoning a copy of his swords. I spin them in my hands as he attacks. I'm not as fast as him, so I reinforce my body to go faster. My form isn't perfect yet, so I strive to copy him better.

"You can't win like that kid." He comments, hooking around my weapons and almost disarming me. I tumble out into the aisle behind him, and receive a kick to the chest that makes me tumble through the open door.

I stand up as he comes to me. In the open like this, I can fight a lot better than I could normally.
