It only takes a couple of minutes to change, shave, and grab something vaguely resembling morning chow- leftover hasbrowns and sausage patties. The eggs, apparently, are already all gone. Grumbling something about inconsiderate asshole teenage female squadronmates, you meet Slider and Merlin outside the door to the quonset hut that's been home for the last week or so. Well, last couple of weeks, but you were in the hospital for a good portion of that.

“So what did you want to talk about?” You ask Slider on the walk over, still chewing on a piece of toast.

“In a minute.” she says, indicating Merlin.

With a few gentle turns, you start heading east, climbing to about thirty thousand feet. The controls are a bit touchier than your old cat's were, and much more responsive, which will take getting used to. “You're on!” You call, rolling your bird inverted and screaming for the clouds.

“Got her! Got her!” Merlin cries. “She's at our seven!”

Twisting around, your oxygen hose and wires floating a bit in the negative gravity of your dive, you see her- she's in full burners, the plumes from her magic turbines visible even in the day.

“Yeah, yeah I see her Merlin.” You confirm, frowning a bit as your aircraft shudders slightly as the wings and tails move to their high-speed flight positions, streamlining your craft, and letting it cut through the air like a bullet.

It also makes maneuvering just a hair harder- you feel a definite skid starting to build as you pull to the left, trying to cut inside her arc and defeat her attack from below. It's controllable, but it's certainly different from your cat.

One of mav's major disadvantages is that when she's going fast, she can't turn nearly as well as most other witches- physics are a bitch like that. This lets you fight her at high speeds a lot like you'd fight a conventional aircraft- in this case you're lower than she is, but moving much faster- by the time she reverses and gets back on you, you can be inside the cloud layer with terrain-following radar on, or down on the deck. Alternately, you could stay up high, but she can see you up here, though that cuts both ways and you can still see her.

You war with yourself briefly- you want to duck into the cloud layer and see what this bird's sensors can really do. Between the 360 radar coverage and whatever this LDAR is, you get the feeling that the Vought team wasn't real big on AWACS. Either that or they were, and were trying to make every aircraft equal to one.

Hard to tell, really.

But you really want to know how the bird handles in a turning fight. One of the mission statements on it's design was to be able to go toe-to-toe with witches and win, and while you think that's probably a pipe dream, at best, it certainly wouldn't hurt to try, especially against a known adversary like Maverick.

Grunting, you pull out of your dive, rolling your aircraft's nose back up and to the right, still tracking maverick as she makes a long, looping turn.

A long, looping turn well to your outside. She was going way, way too fast- a common mistake of hers, and she overshot. Normally, it's not an issue for her- she'll blow past, finger on the trigger, and dump twenty or thirty magic-enhanced shots at a bird and keep moving, usually resulting in damage bad enough that she can come back and 'tidy up' later.

Seeing you, she almost slams to a halt, changing direction with the characteristic ease of a witch- and coming head-on.

“Ya know,” you muse, watching her “I wonder if she learned that from the Russians, or if they learned that from her?”

Merlin giggles.

F-22 wasn't in service until '05 it's still 16 years out. And isn't even in the flyoff state yet. Hell, most of the testing that designed Thrust Vectoring wouldn't even have been done at this point, as the X-31 wasn't even put into it's first flight until 1990. And the F-15 STOL/MTD has only been in flight for a year. So the only in service aircraft in timeline actually capable of Pugachev's Cobra are the Su-27, MiG-29 and -35 and the X-02B

You flip your weapons selector over to agiles- while you're loaded with a pair of them for self-defense, you haven't armed either of them, and don't plan to. But your weapons computer doesn't know that, and immediately, you see the tracking reticule appear over Maverick, along with the low pitched tone that indicates your computers are working for a firing solution.

You gain one almost the same instant you see her swing her M-16 up, forcing you to roll over the top as you blow past her a few hundred meters away, trashing your 'shots' and forcing you into evasive as she spins, hovering in place and tracking you with her rifle.

“Damn.” you hiss, hoping Merlin was able to keep her eyes on Maverick. “Merlin, you still got her?”

“Yeah! Yeah, she's still back there! She's between our tails, maybe a mile out!” Merlin calls.

Too far out for her gun, at least, but she can probably catch you- though you're starting to think that if she gets moving like she can, you can out turn her easily. Of course, at speeds like these, closure rates are pretty crazy- especially if you cut your forward speed down.
