Civ Quest.
Battle.
About time some bronze-age tribesfolk ate dirt.

You all know the drill people, so that's MORE than enough introduction! Who's ready to spill some blood?!

Three's enough.

Momentum is a bitch to stop once it starts and a mob of over four hundred bloodthirsty men and women has a LOT of inertia. At least, that's the civilized view of it. As far as Gerin knows, everyone is simply not listening to him. The Earthsplitters and Lions charge on ahead, racing to be the first to claim the bridge. The Long Fangs, determined not to be out-done, pick up their pace again, even though the two flanking Gerin's band, formerly buoyed by the initial fervour of the battle, are starting to flag under the weight of their rams. As the hunters move forward however, the band on the left, lead by Trym himself, claim the farmlands... And a lookout on their left flank calls a warning. Emerging from the hills and formerly hidden from sight is a large group of roughly fifty men and women, not a part of any tribe Trym recognises as friendly!
>>
>>21922772
Better make that four.
Once again, don't cross the bridge, and a query, is there anything we can do to help Trym besides just sending off another troop of hunters who'll probably get to him by the time the fight's over?
>>
>>21922844
To tell the truth..? Not really. You've got control over Gerin's unit. Anything beyond that is pretty much up in the air already and there's not a whole lot you can do to change anything. Ahh, the downsides of a primitive system of war.

Also... While I can't stop the IRC... It's really lonely in this thread without you all arguing...
>>
>>21922772
Send Gerin's unit to meet these new comers head on. THe lion bros and earthbros can hold the bridge. We need to be the first in the fight. Have Gerin shout for the shrine cart to follow him.
>>
Okay, time for some in-thread discussion.

How about we use Gerins unit to face the newcomers and help Trym? As said already, we still got our allies for close combat duty at the river and our army won't immediately need it unless we break the walls fast.

So there will be enough time to pull back after we mopped the blue guys up.
>>
>>21923058
>>21923017
Yea, so I agree with Ref
>>
>>21923058
we should take them on, it'll make our plunder look purposeful to the other tribes, and us taking first blood will raise moral.
>>
>>21923074
With Trym's range then coming into close combat we'll have a good time taking out their 40-50 men. We'll outnumber them 3 to 1 and probably be better equipped.

I'd rather be safe than sorry if there's more coming than just 50 men of theirs. Also they might have ranged weaponry as well.
And I don't know about the range of weapons, but they are on a hill... so yea.

>>
We declare we shall send Gerin's unit forward towards this new coming unit, while shouting for the Griza cart to follow us. We shall run past Trym to meet them directly.
>>
>>21923374
seconded, except for running past trym. we should have gerins group stay next to or in front of trym's, so they can volley the blue guys
>>
>>21923418
I meant we run past Trym and set up a defensive formation in from of him. I need to be more specific. We go in front of Trym at the bottom of his hill and hold. While we wait for him to fire into the oncoming enemy.
>>
>>21923374
I would like to add the addendum that we also send a runner to make sure the lions and Earthsplitter will stop at the bridge. I don't expect it will do much, but it might help. We just can't have them accidentally going over the bridge, that would ruin everything.
>>
>>21923508

That sounds like a wonderful idea.
>>
Also, if we see a band of wolves lead by a great white dire wolf... we'll knew Derrik done good.
>>
File: 1354836579653.png-(450 KB, 1365x1107, Battle 1 Turn 5.png)

Trym's band, upon seeing the enemy, surge forward, eager to come to grips with the foe! As they charge forward however, a hissing sound herald a rain of arrows from their target! Not only that, but the enemy falls back into the hills as Trym's men draw near, vanishing from sight in rising and falling terrain. Eleven of Trym's men drop as they approach, leaving them shaken and stunned by the sudden losses.

Gerin's band moves up to assist their comrades, the shrine-cart of Groza following on after them as they cut across in front of them. The rest of the warband however moves up, the Earthsplitters claiming the bridge first and beginning their crossing, despite disappointed and angry cries from the Lion Tribe.
>>
>>21924011
Ok, we're going to put the next few turns stuff all at once.

We meet up with Trym, and come back to this side of the river. From there we circle the wagons (special move for wagon units) and set up our siege camp. From there we set up a defensive circle and plan our assault on the wall.

Brit, just act like several turns passed unless something major comes up for us to deal with.
>>
A siege camp is pointless if we are going to attack the walls directly anyway. On that note, I am out for today.
>>
>>21924077
We need to siege camp to get everyone together to pass out orders again. Things have changed, everyone needs a new set of orders.
>>
>>21924095
I say we attack the village directly now. If we put it off we'll be working with what they decide to give us. If we attack their village we'll force them into action and they'll have to come to our lines to protect their village.
>>
>>21924095
How are we going to get the Earthsplitters to stop though, assuming there isn't going to be a giant ambush waiting for them on the other side of the bridge.
>>
>>21924149
They have men ready to flank us on this side of the river.

If we attack we'll have men coming from behind and be sandwiched against their wall, something that will cause us all to die. We build the siege camp and we'll have a line to wall back on to stop us and stop a full encirclement.
>>
>>21924149
Yes we just had losses, we knew we would, but 11 out of 550 is not really all that bad when it comes down to it. We learned a lesson not to charge archers not lets move on.
>>
>>21924158
Runners, runners are good. Ok. I vote we send runners to the lions and earth splitters saying we want to build a siege camp on this side of the river for a staging area and for them to wait so we can discuss what's going on and have a new set of order to be passed out. We head tot his side of the rive rand defend the carts while they set it up, and send another runner for Trym telling him the same thing.
>>
>>21924158
I'm not sure we can... we could send out runners to every group and try to have them regroup... If no one stops though, I suggest telling the supply guys and one group of archers to set up camp on either side of the river, as a defense point / fall back, while we push forward with everything, while we still have the momentum.

>>21924168
Yea, but the lions and earths are just running up to get murdered right now.
>>
We're boned if we dont do something. Thanks to our allies we're tied into crossed that bridge. Can't be helped. They won't come back to the siege camp. Nor will the Lions. It's not how they've fought before.

I have to be V for this, but I'm gonna quote Sun Tzu more or less, if we give our men no hope of retreat, they'll fight all the harder for it.
>>
>>21924195
We can't kill ourselves because they're going to die. We need to send runners to try and get them to stop. They will see reason, they're not idiots. If they stop and we have the siege camp it will allow us to have a lane of retreat, prevent us from being encircled and pressed against the wall, allow us to have a staging area to pass out orders, and counter their hit and run tactics.

It will do us a shit ton of good.
>>
>>21924169
You know, if the rest of their shots are anything like that, charging them might not actually be that bad an idea. We would need to consider the gain/loss of course, but could we sacrifice 10 or 20 more soldiers in an effort to take out a less hand-to-hand combat prepared enemy?
>>
>>21924249
Fine then, set up a siege camp on our side of the river and see how it goes. More than likely they'll just reinforce their side of the river and we'll never get near that village.
>>
>>21924222
Fight and died pressed against the wall, the man who runs away lives to die another day. We can't throw all our cards in now, there is too much at stake.
>>
>>21924264
We have no idea how prepared they are for combat however.
>>
>>21924249
Yea I agree. But I still suggest, in case they don't stop, send our army to the designated point and set up camp with maybe 1 group of archers left there, while the army moves forward in case they don't stop.
>>
Ok, I will put up our plan for the next few turns to be voted on. We will send Gerin to this side of the river with the wagons to circle up and build the camp. Runners will be sent to the Earthsplitters, Lion Tribe, and Trym to come to the siege camp for new orders to make a combined assault. We will use Derrik's hunters to guard the camp since they don't have a leader.

Sound good everyone?
>>
>>21924308
Yeah, Derrik's squad will be perfect for that since their leader has disappeared. The supply carts, siege rams, and Derrik's unit will wait there and pitch camp.
>>
>>21924195
I like it, I'll second the proposition to get our guys to set up camp here, so the Earthsplitters will have something to come crawling back to. But they're probably going to lose a lot of guys if there is an ambush.
>>
Cross the river, have the archers occupy the hills near where our camp is to be set up and next to the bridge. I'll relent that we need a camp, but not on our side of the river.

Also, have a unit stay with the carts to provide some protection as they work their way across.

The enemy will run at the sight of a charge it looks like. We'll take losses, but imagine if we stayed over here and then tried to move later across it.
>>
>>21924311
>>21924326
Oh and while crossing the river with our carts and everything might be a bad and dangerous idea with enemies behind our backs, it's probably more reasonable to set camp on the other side. We won't have to fear much from behind and they can't block access over the river to the village
>>
>>21924311
The Lions and Earthsplitters will not give up that bridge lightly. And more than likely they will think us cowards for losing so few men and wanting to pull back. Understand our allies Refrek. They will NOT like pulling back.
>>
>>21924343
My plan calls for setting up camp on this side of the river. If we fall back they'll be forced to do a bridge crossing the chase us.
>>
>>21924360
Then they can go die. I will not have our tribe slaughtered because they call us cowards. I will gladly be a coward any day if it wins us this battle.
>>
>>21924311
I don't know... this seems too complicated, it's likely to get fucked up somehow. We need to think simple, we need to think like a bunch of spear-toting meatheads. Get in their head so we can maybe understand how they'll react to our plans.
>>
>>21924377
That's what I like to hear, we can turn their own funnel against them.
>>
>>21924389
I'm granting you your siege camp, grant me my side of the river. If our archers take the hills then they can't be used against us. If we keep one unit back to protect our carts then they won't risk losing men they probably can't afford to lose.

We need to take that side of the river.
>>
>>21924394
But they aren't idiots, the lion tribe may be a bit bloodthirsty, but they aren't stupid. If we get one of them to pull back the other will. They won't be stupid enough to make a wall assault with a hundred and twenty (or eighty) men. The Earthsplitters will be more likely to pull back, their chieftain seems smart.
>>
>>21924430
But they won't attack us. They have no reason to attack us. None whatsoever. If we sit on our side of the river and they reinforce their side on those hills we'll take even greater casualties trying to cross it later.
>>
>>21924432
Fine, but do we know the bridge can support our carts? That is the only thing I am worried about now. We will strike camp on that side of the river and prepare for the assault on the wall.
>>
>>21924432
I agree with josh here. I'd prefer siege camp on their side and one group of archers left behind. (maybe more until we figure out how many units they have behind us)
>>
>>21924464
They have men outside of the wall already, if there are more on that side of the river they might try to make a run for us, but I will compromise and say we strike camp over there.
>>
>>21924464
Remember the Earthsplitters- when untrained, undisciplined troops get too into it, they make stupid decisions, and don't consider what they're going into. The Earthsplitters will retreat after getting the shit beat out of them, and the zealots will hopefully follow, not noticing the giant trap we've laid out.
>>
>>21924489
So do we all agree on action? Can somebody write a post including how we do it (runners). Maybe an alternative in case something goes wrong?
>>
Ok, I will put up our plan for the next few turns to be voted on. We will send Gerin to the other side of the river to follow the Earthsplitters and Lion Tribe with the wagons to circle up once they get there to build the camp. Runners will be sent to the Earthsplitters, Lion Tribe, and Trym to come to the siege camp for new orders to make a combined assault. We will use Derrik's hunters to guard the other side of the bridge, since they don't have a leader. The bridge will turn into an easy shooting lane if anyone tries to come over it.
>>
>>21924524
add to that we need to keep at least 1 group of archers protecting the carts
>>
>>21924468
I honestly have no idea if the bridge will support the weight. For all we know that might be a trap in and of itself, but I do firmly believe our best option is to cross the river, take those nearby hills and plan.

While leaving a good sized unit to defend the river itself.

Also, if the bridge wont hold the wagons, for them into a defensive semicircle to use as cover.

We're working with a lot of unknowns here and this is the best I can come up with.
>>
>>21924524
Just for the record, I think this is a bad idea. That said, I am at the whim of the majority, I just feel it necessary to try one more time before I quiet myself and wait for the results to show up.
>>
>>21924573
Yeah, that's what Derrik's squad is doing. That's what I meant by his guard.
>>
Hi guys, I am the new guy from the last thread, Picked a name and hoping to participate in this thread :) Won't be joining the IRC though.
>>
>>21924577
It just seems like when we're working with unknowns, we should be thinking defensively, rather than offensively. That way we can prepare for the worst, and not suffer as much if we were wrong.
>>
>>21924577
they should be able to cross the river itself. i think it isnt too deep

>>
>>21924651
Ok, I will put up our plan for the next few turns to be voted on. We will send Gerin to the other side of the river to follow the Earthsplitters and Lion Tribe with the wagons to circle up once they get there to build the camp. Runners will be sent to the Earthsplitters, Lion Tribe, and Trym to come to the siege camp for new orders to make a combined assault. >>
>>21924647
I feel like I'm the only one with ideas, and you guys are just saying push forward to the wall or that mine won't work. We need to play this smart guys! A zerg will turn us into pin cushions as the wall.
>>
>>21924670
seconded

>>21924686
come on, we all suggested something ourselves, or modified your ideas at least
>>
>>21924686
Your idea was to set up a camp on our side of the river which is a bad idea.

I wanted to attack. Also a bad idea.

Combined plan set up a camp on their side of the river with hunters placed to keep watch and protect flanks. Best idea yet.
>>
>>21924686
I'm saying have Gerin return to the major war party, and have the guys set up camp on our side of the river. Have Trym pull back, but stay near the farms as he moves to the river. This should keep him out of the range of the archers, and maybe even make them move, leaving them wide open. When the Earthsplitter come back after being ambushed, we'll be prepared to assault the charging enemies that follow them.
>>
>>21924670
Thirded.
>>
>>21924732
Yeah you're right. Sorry.
>>
I think we should hold ground and set up camp before we continue across the bridge.
We don't know where the forces from the hills came from, or if there are any more. And if we set up camp across the bridge, we might find ourselves in between 2 forces with only a bridge behind us and a wall in front of us.
>>
>>21924772
I know what you're saying, but setting on our side of the river will leave us basically in the same spot.

BUT we have some idiots charging at the walls right now, so we have to be fast, set up our camp on the other side of the river as a fallback point, in case they decide not to stop.
>>
>>21924772
And if we stay on our side of the river, we wont have anything behind us, true for now. Just on both sides, and a lethal bridge crossing in front. Cross, form a camp and hold the bridge. Anything on the other side of the river will have to brave a blizzard of arrows to cross or circle wide around which will delay them.
>>
>>21924772
I agree, it is dangerous to go deeper into enemy territory when we've already got enemies on our back, who pose a constant threat.
>>
>>21924809
>>21924818
Guys, also what if the enemy has units on their side of the river.
Scenario:

We set up camp on our side, lions and earths charge onwards. They go between us, turn them into potato mash at the walls and we cant get to them because they hold the riverside...

Better to keep our army close together while lions and earths are charging
>>
>>21924800
But if we set up on our side of the river, we have the larger threat forced to funnel themselves to get to us, while the smaller threat has to deal with our collective force waiting for them to try and attack. It is the strategically logical choice.
>>
>>21924864
Lions aren't charging, I don't think, just the earths. So if they get mashed, it'll still be two on one.
>>
>>21924889
They want to, but the bridge is too thin for them to get over.
>>
>>21924941
>The rest of the warband however moves up, the Earthsplitters claiming the bridge first and beginning their crossing, despite disappointed and angry cries from the Lion Tribe.
I don't think that's right.
>>
>>21924866
But, for the tenth time, they have no reason to attack us. If you were outnumbered and your enemy decided to set up camp on the wrong side of the river would you risk it all by launching and attack on their defenses? No, no you wouldnt because that would make you stupid. Or insanely brave. I rest on the former.
>>
>>21924955
They are angry because the earths took first spot. They wanna charge too.
>>

Build the camp on their side of the river, behind the hills

Otherwise, we give them that whole stretch as a staging area for future battles.

We need to push them behind their walls.
>>
>>21924974
They have units outside the walls, who I believe are not actually part of their tribe. Britfag specifically said they were and unrecognized tribe. i think they are allies of the Sun Folk.
>>
Rolled 4

>>21924978
Plus, if we take their side of the river, we could use it to fend off any reinforcements that could come at us from behind.
>>
Ok everyone, this is the plan I have at the moment. This includes everything we got. Hopefully the bridge will make the charge slow enough for us to catch up and convince them we need to strike camp.

We will use Derrik's hunters to guard the camp, since they don't have a leader. The bridge will turn into an easy shooting lane if anyone tries to come over it.

Please vote for this or offer a different plan to vote on, because if we keep modifying we'll never come to a consensus unfortunately.

>>21924995

Well in that case it might be wise to confront them first, Destroying them might also ahve an impact on the Sun Folk morale.

While Gerin tries to re-form the warband, the Earthsplitters complete their crossing, starting to rally up on the far side. The slow progress across the bridge meant they have lost a good deal of their momentum and seem to be psyching themselves up for another charge to the walls of the village. The Lion warriors are already champing at the bit, almost fighting amongst themselves as they pour across the thin bridge. The bottleneck is causing the momentum of the advance to falter badly however.

Trym's hunter band moves up through the hills, pursuing their quarry. As they emerge onto the tops of the final hills, a cry goes up! The enemy has been spotted crossing the river upstream! They had coracles concealed somewhere and are now paddling for their lives in an attempt to cross before Trym's men catch them!
>>
>>21925455
What about our runners?

Continue the plan, keep with the runners. Yell to the Lion Tribe and Earthsplitters to stop so we can strike camp. Trym is gonna keep going probably, but hopefully our runner can get to him.
>>
>>21925495
I agree. Although I suggest, if possible, tell Trym to fire at them until they crossed the river, then go back and team up.
>>
>>21925495
Seconded. Continue the plan. Let Trym keep on them until the runner gets to him. Maybe we can avenge some of our losses before they get to the boats and as they paddle across.
>>
>>21925540
The runners should be heading towards him and the other two groups. They'll get to them and probably be back next turn or so.
>>
Continuing with the current plan looks like the best option to me. But perhaps we also could send the earthsplitters to cut off the unknown tribe? They have already crossed and could probably intercept them.
>>
>>21925721
Oh, I think that's not a terrible idea actually. Although it's still risky as hell, as we don't know whats on that side they try to get to. They could, for all we know, have their camp there.
>>
>>21925799
Then let's send the Earthsplitters towards their direction anyway, when they reach the hills and see an enemy camp they can turn back. If not, push towards them.
>>

>>
>>21925721
Hmm, If we can send a small amount of troops over there, maybe even just one, I think it would work. As it is, we need to remain as tight and strong as possible, but this seems totally doable.
>>
>>21925845
We can't order them to do that. They already have a runner saying "come back" we can't send another that says "never mind go the other way" it'll get too confusing.
>>
>>21925845
I agree, but I just remembered that they were skirmishers... might get bloody for our buddies.
Although they already had a shot once... who knows how much ammo is left?
>>
>>21925915
We're close enough now that we can get them to, I think.

And if Trym does try to force a crossing, the enemy will turn to shoot arrows allowing the ES to hit them from behind. Not the greatest plan, but I think it's a good one.

> I have no damn excuse for what took me so long... I'm a fucking disgrace as a GM.

The stalled advance gives Gerin enough time to rally everyone up to a standstill. The priest of the battle god reluctantly considers that the warband needs to pitch camp before continuing the battle, as there is very much the danger of being ambushed as the warband attempts to cross the river. The Earthsplitters thankfully notice the confusion behind them and hold back, while the Lion Tribe is very vocal in expressing their derision and eagerness to get to grips with the enemy.

Trym's band continue to move up to the river bank, but none wish to attempt the crossing. Instead, they pay back their attackers with arrows of their own! The distance isn't so great across the river and as their quarry disembarks from the coracles, the hunters are able to see 15 of them drop!

I'm so sorry, everyone. I had hoped I could give you a proper thread tonight, but my own failings got in the way. I try my best to focus and keep my shit together, but somehow my mind always ends up wandering. I can only promise you that I'll always try my hardest to give you an enjoyable and hopefully active thread to enjoy.

The next thread'll be on Tuesday at 1600EST, the same as ever. I do hope you can forgive me for my failings thus far and show up then. Have a nice weekend!
