It took you a few seconds to figure it out. She used a strange name for your sempai, who you're familiar with as Chiaki Matsuda. The pink-haired terror had called her Homura-chan - the same name she'd called your sempai when you encountered her in your own illusion, moments before she shattered it.

Homura-chan. It's...it's a pretty name, certainly. Cooler-sounding than Chiaki. Maybe you could use it for a side story, or something. It has potential.

You just hope you get the chance to. What with your being inside a Witch Barrier and needing to rescue Chiaki on top of everything else.

Forcing the stab of fear and panic down - as well as the all-too-powerful impulse to run as fast as you can in the opposite direction - it's then that you pull yourself up to your feet, before turning slowly to face the only other occupant in the barrier. Willing yourself to look into her tar-black eyes, so black that you could easily see yourself reflected in both of them.

You manage to ask her, after a few false starts and her tilting her head to the side questioningly - like a cat - questions that you've been meaning to ask.

Where is Chiaki? Where is your sempai?

What's happened to her?

And why is she doing this to her?

It takes her a few moments to respond, her quizzical expression twisting into a disappointed pout. Her eyebrows furrowing delicately. Looking as if you've just asked her a barrage of distasteful questions about her dress sense, which, honestly, is really pushing the pink color scheme a bit too far. Well, the black ribbons are a bit of a nice offset--

The tremors stop after a while, with the pink-haired monstrosity looking quite cross with you. F-fine, fine, Homura. Whatever. You just want to find out where she is--

"Those stupid alien cats seriously need to pick their contractees better, they'll just pick any riffraff off the street just to get their quotas met! Any magical girl worth their Soul Gem knows that the Witch is always at the center of the Barrier, which is in that direction--"


She makes to raise a gloved hand to wrathfully gesticulate at the falling standards of Magical Girls today, when she suddenly stops - and narrows her sunless gaze at you, the scowl on her face deepening.

You involuntarily step back at this, and you make the mistake of blinking.

In that brief moment where you closed your eyes and opened them in the same heartbeat, she'd disappeared from her spot five feet away from you.

And reappeared right in your face.

"Why are you asking?" The girl all but growls, the unclean edge of long-lost sanity tainting her words. The scent of something...chokingly sweet and sugary in her breath, permeating her entire presence. "Why are you trying to find her? ARE YOU AFTER HOMURA-CHAN TOO?!"

You...you can't help but feel that you should be careful how you reply here.

"U-uu, forget about that! We can go find her together!" It's then that you feel her gloved hands suddenly snatch one of yours up, clasping it between hers - and you force the reflex of pulling your hand away at the sensation of claws pressing against your skin. Her hands were warm and soft enough, yes, but her touch carried with it a sickening sense of revulsion. "It'll be just like an RPG! You can join my party, and we'll find the missing princess together!" She pauses at this, only to suddenly flush crimson. "W-well, for me, Homura-chan's been more of a prince than anything..."

I wonder if it's worth asking about Mirai? She was the one who would have been suffering from excessive grief from the torture. You...well, there's no other way to say it, but you do have a bad feeling about this.

It's one thing to have yourself thrown into a Barrier to save your sempai, but...to join up with something like her? It makes for a good twist, sure, and you probably could use it in a future volume, but...this person, whoever and whatever she was, had been tormenting your sempai ever since you've met her. The reason why your sempai had always looked so haunted, so miserable, so...defeated.

You are teaming up with the one thing that turned your sempai into the self-loathing wreck that she was. To rescue her from the barrier she'd trapped herself in.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Your response had barely left your lips when the girl seems to almost bounce in manic glee, clasping your hand to her chest. You're...you're glad that she's pleased about it, but you don't think the party setting fits at all, here. It's not as if this is a game or anything...

"Oh, silly broccolihead! Of course I know that!" The girl pouts, before smiling again. "It's just easier to think about things like this! Homura-chan's always been about taking things seriously to the point that she'd be brooding and quiet a whole lot." She narrows her sharklike eyes and forces her lips into a disgruntled pout. "Like this, all the time, see? Always frowning, looking like the world owes her something. It doesn't help get anything done! Ah, but with the both of us, we'll find Homura-chan in no time flat!"

...Right. If...if she wasn't so scary, her enthusiasm would actually be infectious.

That stung more than you thought it would.

"Anyway, yes! We should probably start, but..." It's then that she frowns. "I...I know I said something about her being in the center, but...that's the thing. I'm getting at least...four places where she could be, or where the center is. Maybe all of them are, or maybe just one of them." Madoka rubs her temples, as if trying to ease a migraine. "There's a fifth one pulsing out to me, too, but it feels different than Homura...that's probably your friend, if I'm not mistaken."

...Four locations? And Mirai? This...this is going to be more difficult than you thought, isn't it?

A slight beeping sound alerts you to the bulky watch you'd borrowed from Misaka.

You glance at your bulky watch, and then at 'Madoka' - before getting her attention and asking her if it would be okay for you to take the call. Normally you'd probably just answer it, but...it's better to play it safe, right now, than find out the hard way that you've screwed up. She doesn't seem to be bothered much by it though, waving you off and grumbling something about timelines converging. You thank her, and you turn away from her to try and see how in the world could you operate this thing. Without accidentally calling Tiny Pete in.

Thankfully, you remember which button to push when you desperately need the huge robot to come to your rescue - and it's the button you avoid as you try poking a bit at the other ones. A beep, and a voice rendered scratchy by heavy static comes on the tinny speaker. It's...not very loud, but not loud enough for anyone else to overhear.

"Mido--Midori-chan?" It's Misaka's voice. "Midori-chan, can you hear Misaka? Midori-chan, report!"

You hastily reply to the affirmative. Yes, you can hear her, but barely. You're still alive, and where you're supposed to be...you think. What is she calling for?

"A-ah! Was calling to report about Tiny Pete, he is ready for deployment!" A moment. "A-and something else! We know Murderface still has Teleport Beacon, so we tried to track its signal at least!"

...That's great. That's great news!

"It's...but it's strange! We are detecting four signals! It is like there are four beacons instead of one, not counting Midori-chan's!"

And that doesn't help at all. ...Maybe it does to confirm Madoka's guesswork, but are they sure?

You turn slowly, and Madoka is there, seemingly eager to get things going. "Quit stalling and let's go already! The nearest Homura-chan's up north! If we're lucky, we can get there before she stops screaming!"

Screaming...? But you don't hear anything...

"Are you deaf? She's practically calling us! Come on!"

"Midori-chan?" The Teleport Beacon's tinny speaker comes alive again. "Midori-chan, useless brother is saying that he is detecting really strong Witch signature near you! Please be careful--"

The connection goes dead before Misaka could finish her sentence, or you to frame a response. You lower the bulky watch, and turn towards the pink-haired girl standing by your side, looking more and more impatient by the second.

"Are you done?" Madoka snaps at you. "Kh, if you weren't sent here to pick up after Homura-chan, I'd leave you to rot and find her myself! Now, let's go! We don't have a moment to lose!"

She points a gloved hand ahead, into the horizon. As soon as she does so, it's then that the barrier seems to subtly shift - and you see a tall, rather modern-looking building rise up from the ground. You've seen it before, and you've always wanted to step into its hallowed halls, just to see what it was like to get the best education money could buy.

On another note, I want to say that hold off on asking about Mirai depending on how she takes the questions about Chiaki. If she opens up and is friendly, then we can sneak the questions about Mirai in. You follow Madoka cautiously as she sets off towards the building, keeping in pace with her. It's quite hard not to - the surrounding wreckage that is Mitakihara's ruins seems to move on its own accord wherever she steps, the floodwaters and flotsam parting and leaving a clean, impeccable surface for her to walk on. You try to keep within this sphere of convenient influence, and for the briefest of moments you're almost tempted to hold her hand. ...You know, to better keep pace with her and all. That's all.

...Ugh. Are you serious? Are you seriously getting attracted to this walking, black-eyed monstrosity cheerfully bending the rules of physics over with every step she takes? Not counting the fact that she's doing it in someone else's Barrier - to whom, by all rights, the laws of physics should very well belong to. No. Your sempai's enough to hold a candle for.

But you had to admit, Madoka was...charming in her own right. If you look at her from behind, where her eyes aren't all that visible, and the teeth aren't as prominent. She's even humming a tune while she's walking! A-and she's almost skipping! That's...that's what they call moe now, right? You've never believed in such a definition yourself, considering it a tawdry character template...b-but those ribbons, and the skirt--

It's then that she tells you about two girls - Madoka and Homura. Homura-chan was a shy girl, a delicate girl, someone who couldn't hurt a fly even if her life depended on it. Madoka, on the other hand, was brave, kind, and was the picture perfect example of a Magical Girl. It was supposed to be a secret, but Homura accidentally found out when Madoka had to rescue her. They became best friends after that, with Homura swearing to keep Madoka's secret with her.

But then something happened. Something bad. Something that tore the two friends apart, forever. One of them lost to the world, never to be seen again, and the other sacrificing her very soul to try and do the impossible. Even going so far as to destroy the entire world just so she could have what she wanted.

"Hmm, I don't really know what happened to either of the two girls, but I guess you could say that our situation is sort of like theirs! Or...or maybe it's really the same...or...hnn..." Madoka's lively voice trails off into an absent, distracted murmur. "I...it's not really clear sometimes..."

"She...she didn't listen to Madoka," She murmurs, thick crimson blood welling up in the corners of her eyes. "Madoka told her that everything will be alright, that she won't forget her...b-but Homura didn't listen! She didn't listen to Madoka and wanted to change everything!"

It's here that the blood starts to drip - but unlike tears, the crimson drops took their time etching tracks on the girl's pale cheeks, as if creating furrows with a tattoo's permanence onto her faceas they flowed. Her gloved hands reaching up to claw at her own chest, at the Soul Gem sparking at her throat. "She DIDN'T LISTEN! ALL SHE THOUGHT ABOUT WAS BEING SELFISH! ALL SHE THOUGHT ABOUT WAS WHAT SHE WANTED, INSTEAD OF WHAT EVERYONE NEEDED!"

She is shouting now, and the skies of the barrier seem to darken at every shouted syllable. Even the shape hovering above the both of you changes as well, twisting its shape into something more terrifying, something more evil. The filthy puddles and floodwater start to crimson, bubbling, as if toxic, noxious fumes have just started to blossom underneath, along with the bloated bodies of the drowned bursting like boils.

...Right. Not going well. Not going well at all.

Sempai, what the hell have you done? What can't you remember? What did you do to this girl?

I just realized something, guys. A theory put together from what We the Players know:

You didn't mean to bring up any painful memories, you whisper to her. She doesn't need to remember anything else. You just wanted to know more about her and Homura, that's all.

But she shouldn't say bad things about Homura, you remind her. Even with what she did - i-if she did do them in the first place - they're still friends, right? Madoka still cares for Homura, that's why she's doing this, right?

That's why the both of you will save her! Together!

The tremors, at this point, are no longer just tremors - it's a full-blown earthquake, and the explosions that nearly rupture your eardrums are the very earth splitting open in jagged fissures. The wind blowing isn't just the wind anymore - it's a thousand voices, screaming all at once, an unholy chorus. The stench is enough to make you physically ill, and another breath would be poison.

Ok guys. It's abit late but I've got a theory why Chiaki is witching out.

Remember the first witch we encountered? The mark on her forehead? Well that mark is relevant. There are these things in Kazumi Magica called Evil Nuts which are fake grief seeds. They can turn humans into pseudo-witches and magical girls into witches. In order for them to turn the victim they have to to applied DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD!

So. I think that instead of Mirai turning to a witch because of her incubator, perhaps Jubey somehow 'used Mirai up' so he could teleport an evil nut into Chiaki's forehead and the her into a witch.

Ok next part of the theory. Barriers are supposed to the a representation of a magical girls psyche right? So because of the procedure, we are witnessing a slow motion witch transformation, where Homura's psyche is slowly being spread out.

That's why it's important to collect all the different personias!
