And it does sound like the heavy, grinding footsteps seemed to be, indeed, getting closer. The whine of servos hiding another sound entirely: the rasp of a long, heavy blade being dragged across scarred cement, leaving behind a deep, jagged furrow in its trail. Whoever - or whatever - is heading towards you, it's very well armed.

Alright. You had few options as it is. Warping to the Clinic sounds like a good idea at the moment, but you'd already promised Madoka - and you didn't want to find out how she was when she was disappointed with you. From the rudimentary Witch-hunting lessons you remember, you only used magic in a barrier if you were absolutely confident that you'd get away with it, or that you were fully prepared to tackle the Witch head on - as any magic usage could potentially lure any nearby familiar towards you.

You'll have to do this one manually, it looks like.

You manage to work up a smile, before taking Madoka's hand in yours. You tell her, as quietly as you can, that the both of you seem to have reached the stealth section of the dungeon, and that she'll have to be just as quiet as you until you get to safety. She nods at this after a moment, seemingly buying it, and it's then that you ask if she could...take care of it, if it came down to an encounter.

It's with complete and utter haste that you tear out of the classroom, Madoka in tow. Both your footsteps quick, hurried, desperately fast - a contrast to the plodding, inexorable hammer-falls of the pink-haired girl's pursuer. You don't even dare to look back - the thought of seeing what could terrify someone like the girl with the sunless eyes a bit less terrifying than the thought of seeing...well, your senpai, twisted horribly into something else. Turned into a mindless creature of hate and despair.

It was only until you finally managed to turn the corner - hopefully out of your hunter's field of vision - that you thought of the possibility that it might be Wakaba Mirai. That she was the predator here.

You pull the door open - a bit of a feat, considering your hands are full of crazy pink goddess - but you manage it, and you let Madoka down just as you push the door close again. Just in time, as you could hear those infernal footsteps start up again behind you. Dizzy with fear, you pull Madoka down on the floor with one hand, and your Soul Gem with your other. If worst came to worst, then...you'd have to transform, and do whatever it took to at least drive the monster off.

You're not too sure of your chances there.

The footsteps come closer, and it's then that you see a silhouette come up on the clinic door's half-window. The glass isn't that transparent, it's kind of opaque, but the silhouette...

You desperately gesture to Madoka to keep quiet as the footsteps slow to a halt in front of the door.

Slowing one's heart rate and breathing down, silencing the inner voice, willing one's self to completely be still and motionless. You try to do all these things at once, forcing yourself to remember your training.

Maybe you shouldn't have taken it so easy during Basic, but them's the breaks.

What happens as soon as you do is the longest two minutes of your life. The beast behind the door - the flame dancing, curling lazily as it pulsed, once, twice - does not even make a single move to enter the Clinic, as if having simply decided to take a brief detour and stare incomprehensibly at a door in its path. The wait becomes so interminable that you actually find yourself wishing it would put you out of your misery and smash through. It would certainly be better than all this...waiting.

The footsteps resume again as the beast turns back on the path it'd been on. The heavy, trundling, plodding gait of armored legs punctuating the low shriek of a sharp, heavy blade being dragged across cement. The sharp song twinned with the whine of servos in motion.

You trust yourself to breathe ten minutes after the footsteps had receded into silence. Madoka squirms against you again, and she says your name in a pained whisper. She has to do it twice before she gets your attention, and you ask her what's wrong.

"Y-you're hurting me," she squeaks. "You're holding me too tightly..."

You hastily apologize for it, and slowly disentangle yourselves from each other. It's with infinite care that the both of you pull yourselves back up to your feet, dreading the sudden return of the beast earlier. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to be interested in Madoka anymore.

You hear something else, though. Someone's deep, regular breathing, the kind that says that someone's sleeping quite deeply.

Someone else was inside the Clinic with the both of you.

The Clinic's small, unremarkable for one made for Mitakihara Middle School students - there's a Nurse's Desk and Chair at one corner, a medicine cabinet in the other, and two beds with privacy curtains taking up the bulk of the space. One of the beds are unoccupied, its drapes drawn back - but the other isn't. In fact, it's where you think the sound is coming from.

You draw the privacy curtain back cautiously.

And it's then that you see...your sempai. Not gray, but in the flesh.

Wearing the Mitakihara Middle School Uniform. Her black hair grown out long and thick and tied into two considerable braids. Each one tied off with a nice purple bow, to match her eyes.

She is on her side, curled up meekly like a squirrel underneath the covers. Her glasses clutched to her chest. Her expression as she sleeps a bit troubled, but otherwise peaceful.

"...That's...that's her," Madoka murmurs, tearing up again. But this time, it's not blood she's crying.

Real tears. The sort non-eldritchian horrors like yourself cry.

"...Homura-chan. It's her. ...One of her, a-anyway..."
