You're standing atop a great steel dome, enormous in scale and curving down further the farther you look, but there was no end to it. Rust crawled along ventilation grates below you, and strange, red-orange streams of light arc above you. Behind the streams lay only darkness.

In the dimness, in front of you, opposed to one another, was Stirge and Gabriel, each appraising one another. You experimented with moving, and you were free- you could move as you willed.
"Oh, it's *you*." Gabriel said, sneering at the albino woman. He turned to you. "I hope you haven't listened to anything this bint says. She killed us!"
"You still hold that against me?" Stirge asked, her voice sad.
"Once was enough." Gabriel said, and glared at her. She just gazed back, devoid of emotion.

Above the group, high in the sky, a great... Something emerged. Pure black, and pulsing with malevolence, drawing the red-orange light of the streams in the sky, pulling it in, draining it away. Both Stirge and Gabriel looked up at it. You hear a 'well, fuck' from Gabriel, and a sigh from Stirge.

"Hmph." Gabriel said. "Well, *Abel*, if you're going to draw on this bitch, then I have my own memories I can draw on."
"I wasn't drawn upon." Stirge said, her voice soft.

"She killed us, you say?" You ask, and start checking your pouches. "Well, let me just see if I..."
Finding all of them empty of weapon or item, you shrug, and meet Gabriel's eyes.
"Nope, can't find any fucks to give!" You say.
He took a step back, then growled at you.
"Well, then..." He growled, and clenched his fist.

Stirge sniffled.
"Now what is it?!" Gabriel asked, turning to her.

She was sitting down, cross legged, staring up at the great, black sphere in the sky, pulsing malevolently, hungrily.
Gabriel sighed, and took a seat next to her, staring up at it as well.
"Our game can wait for now, I guess." He said, begrudgingly. "I forget that you forget everything every new round."
He pointed up at the malevolence.
"That's why we're here, in case you're curious, Abel. This is the source of our woes. Subconsciously, you know it, or this thing wouldn't be here. This... black sun."

"What's it doing?" You ask, and sit down next to them. "I have almost no idea what you're talking about."
"I know. It's sealing us here." Gabriel said. "Angels in a cage. For all eternity. So long that we've had nothing to do but... turn inwards. To devour eachother, to keep ourselves entertained, before we leave and start again. Over, and over, and over."
"Until *he* saves us." Stirge said, and Gabriel nodded.
"You've dreamt of him." Gabriel said, and suddenly you remember. He's speaking of God. "Our only hope is to stay sane enough to thank him when we see him."

>>
"Isn't that kind of what you're *not* doing, though, Gabriel?"
"Oh, I still have my goals." He said. "I hope to gain more power than you before He returns. A little... temporary insanity can't hurt, after all, as long as I win."
"How long has it been like this?"
"It's hard to tell, here." Stirge said. "But I think it's been... thousands of thousands of years in here. Outside... maybe a few minutes. A few days?"
"Why not just enter one of these realities we make for our game, and stay there? Live out our lives, repeatedly, until we're rescued."
"...Hah." Gabriel said. "That's what you've always done. Every time you win, you live out your life."
"To be honest, I'm not completely sure why I should care about this."
"... Then don't." He said, and got to his feet. "I've no clue why you choose to erase yourself, every time, but you do. You choose to have no hand in things."
Then he grinned. "But I keep drawing you into this fight. Now, I'm busy. Don't draw me into another dream, witch gifts or not."
He focused, and then was gone.

Stirge sighed again.
"I'm sorry for killing you." She said, nodding, and then she vanished as well.

You awoke at dawn. Tori's head was on your chest, and she was just... lying there, awake, eyes half-lidded.
>>
>>22320861
"Well that was weird."
>>
>>22320861
Gently stroke her hair.
>>
You gently stroke her hair, and she jumped and sat up, cheeks red.
"Well, that was weird."
"No I'm not." She said, cheeks bright red. "I just happen to roll around in my sleep."

You sit up, and find that Cass and Ari were still sleeping, and Tannis in cat form was snoring on Ari's back. The sandborn themselves were just starting to wake up too, though Talbot snored sitting down, a half-full jug of ale in his hands.
>>
>>22320934
"Not you. My dream."

"Not you." You say. "That was nice. I meant the dream I just had."
"Oh, okay, that makes me feel better." She said, rubbing at her eyes and getting to her feet, her eyes bleary. "Oof, my head hurts. I shouldn't do the rosemary thing."
She shook her head, and brushed her hands through her outrageously long hair. "I didn't say anything embarrassing, did I?"
>>
>>22320996
"Outrageously. But you thought it was funny too."
>>
>>22320996
"No, it was just some entertaining stories about the barbarians."

>>
"Depends on what you remember." You say, and she glared at you.
"No, it was just some entertaining stories about the barbarians."
"Well, that's not too bad." She said, and went to go wake Ariana.

Time passed, and eventually the sandborn was all packed up. Kale was sitting atop a wagon, and waved at you when you came near.
"Excuse me, Abel, did you hear anything strange last night? Sometime before you wandered off with Tannis? I swore I heard something, but I'm not sure if it was my mind playing tricks with me."

>>
"Not sure." You say. "Something from the desert, maybe? What did it sound like?"
"It sounded like a burbling brook, like the wind through the trees, like bursting out of your chrystalis." He said, grinning. "It wasn't a desert noise."
"Ariana discovered a new gift. It might be that."
"Oh? That's rather interesting. I'll ask her about it" He said, and grinned at you, before hopping off the wagon. "It is rather extraordinarily boring here when everyone is asleep, though. Had to spend a few hours impatiently. I may take up some sort of hobby."

"We all ready to set off?" Talbot asked, and the sandborn gave their affirmatives. "Well then, it's only an hour or so to Lys. Shorter if we push the oxen."
In one wagon, you see Astora and Cass, and in another, Kale and Ariana sat, speaking. In one of the others was Tannis and Talbot, Tannis asking something, with her face bright, brilliant red.

"So, um, you think you can?" Cass asked, nervously, as you climbed into the wagon. It immediately started moving.
"I'll consider it." Astora said. "It's not technically helping Ari, so I can think about it."
She leaned back, and sighed.
"Oh, hey, Abel." Cass said, giving you a grin. "Astora's going to help me find if any changelings made it out alive."
"I didn't say I would."
"But you will." She said. "I can tell. Your mask isn't as good as you think it is. And thank you."
Astora hmphed, and sighed. "Yeah, I will. But I'm doing things with my familiar right now, so I can't really focus right now."
"Fair enough." Cass said.
>>
>>22321298
"That's good to hear. How are things going in the north?"
>>
>>22321298
"Is it /heating up/ in the north?"
>>
"That's good to hear." You say. "How are things going in the north?"
"There's been a fight. Some templars and city guards died, but the maenads are fine. The knights have to be paranoid, now, so Eldin plans to move to Amberway, leaving the maenad behind. Eldin has me carrying a message to the crones to inform them how things are going."
She sighed, and gave the both of you a lopsided grin.
"I wish I could show you what I'm seeing right now, someday. It's beautiful up here."
>>
>>22321370
"What's his plan now? Leave the maenad to occupy Garamon?"
>>
>>22321370
"What kind of numbers are the Order throwing at Garamon?"
>>
"What's his plan now? Leave the maenad to occupy Garamon?"
"Technically, Garamon is still the merchant lord's city." She said. "He's basically giving the maenads to the lord, since he's agreed to help."
"What kind of numbers are the Order throwing at Garamon?"
"Nearly two hundred knights." She said. "It'd be problematic if they got through the gates, because maenad claws can't get through heavy armor, and the city guards' arrows can't pierce them."

You hear a loud roar, and something whooshed overhead.
"Wait, was that..." Astora asked, and climbed halfway out of the wagon, craning around to look. Cass elbowed you when your eyes lingered on Astora's form.
"It is!" She said. "It's a dragon. Great green one, missing an eye. And someone's riding it."
You hear a crunch from ahead the caravan, and the wagons suddenly jerked to a stop, the oxen refusing to walk past.

You peer out alongside Astora, and you can see a strange, darkskinned man, swathed in robes and his eyes bright violet, leaning on an enormous dragon with a puckered eye, much larger than Astora's familiar.
"... Wow." She said, grinning.

The man in the distance cleared his throat. "Hello!" He cried. "I'm looking to meet a witch here."
>>
>>22321459
"Oh, shit. This is the Dragon that my father took an eye out of."
>>
>>22321459
"That's probably you, Astora."
>>
"Hey... is that the dragon my father took an eye from?"
>>
>>22321459
"Which one?"
>>
"Hey... is that the dragon my father took an eye from?"
"I don't know, but if so, that's... not a good thing." Astora said.
You climb out of the wagon, and approach the man.
"Which one?" You ask.
"Just bring them all out. I'll know which one I want when I see them." He said, rolling his eyes. Then his eyes locked with yours.
"Hm, interesting..." He said, with a grin. "But no matter. Bring them all out. The warlocks, too."
>>
>>22321540
"There's no warlock here."
I'm thinking we should get our revolver ready.
>>
>>22321540
"Warlocks? There's not even one here, I'm afraid."
Get revolver (we should really consider naming it.)
>>
>>22321540

>>
"Warlocks? there's not even one here, I'm afraid."
"Oh, fair enough. No way to be certain, after all." He said. You pull out your revolver, and load it, making sure the barrel was clear and that it was functional.
"Any chance you can tell me why you're looking for her? Surely there's better things to snack on."
"Oh, I don't want to snack on her." He said. "I want to thank her. Right, buddy?"
The dragon snorted down at him, then looked to you and nodded.
"See? Old scaleface agrees."
>>
>>22321598
Oh, so you're not a warlock? I had figured you and he...

How's he get on without the eye?

"Astora, come on out."

No, we said there were no warlocks.

>>
>>22321629
Cass isn't a witch.
>>
"Oh, so you're not a warlock? I had figured you and he..."
"Oh, no, Darjeh isn't my familiar. Just a friend." He said, and chuckled. "Though a dragon familiar would be something to see."
"How's he get on without the eye?"
"Oh, he has the other one." He said.
You turn back. "Astora, come on out."

"Right, okay." She said, hopping out of the wagon, approaching the dragon and the man. The dragon snorted at her, but she ignored it.
"Not you, fool." He said to her immediately, and waved her off. "You're too weak. Get one of the other ones."
"What?! Me? Weak?" Astora asked, instantly furious. "I bear the gift of flame, and I've been deemed Nobilis. Who are you to call me weak?!"
"So?" He asked. "You don't have the Gift of Rebirth."
"The what?" She asked.
"The Gift of Rebirth." He said. "What it does is obvious. For, you see... I was dead once. Until just recently, actually. Send the other ones out."
>>
>>22321646
"That'd be Ariana's new gift then. Ariana, come out here!"
>>
>>22321646
Clap our hands together. "Hah! That's her new gift! That's awesome. Ariana, come on out."
>>
>>22321646
Yeah, give us a minute.

"Do you think we should, Tori? This seems like part of Arianna's new gift. He seems to know what it is, so it might help her."
>>
Hey... if the gift of rebirth works as described, then that fixes Tannis' problem.
>>
>>22321675
Not really.
Abel, being an angel, wouldn't be effected the same way.
It's entirely possible that Abel dies the same way Gabe does.
>>
>>22321646
"Huh. That's nice."
>>

>>
"That'd be Ariana's new gift, then." You say.
"... Wait. She's on her coming of age?" He asked, and brandished her hand to Astora. "Then why is the nobilis here? Damn, it's only been twenty years. Sanctuary can't have changed this much."
"Give us a minute." You say.
"Oh, alright." He said, with a nod.

"Do you think we should, Tori?"
"I don't like him." Tori said, glaring at him. He smiled pleasantly back. "Hey, what's your name!" She cried.
"My name? It's Elebereth." He said. "Elebereth the learned. Pleasant to meet you, Astora."

Astora met your eyes- she seemed to be trying to tell you something.
>>
>>22321697

"... I've heard that name before." She said. "He's a wizard."
"Ding, ding, ding!" The wizard said, grinning. "We have a winner! I have gifts, but no familiar! Now, let me thank this Ariana for bringing me back."
"He's a wizard that's stolen the gifts of three warlocks and a witch." Astora continued, light blazing from her claw.
The wizard shrugged, and smiled, then started to clap.

"Like this!" He said, and leaped forward. The air around him... twisted, and suddenly he was *right* in your face, his hand reaching out for Astora, sparks dancing from his fingertips.
You shoot him. The bullet tears through his leg as Astora leaps back, and the wizard stumbled.

"So you want the gift of rebirth." You say, as he was on his hands and knees.
"What *was* that?" He asked.
"Sorry, but that isn't going to happen." You say. "How long can your familiar get here, Tori?"
"Too long." Astora said. She started holding her claw, gritting her teeth, as the thin points between her scales cracked. She hissed with pain.
"Hey, Scaleface." The wizard said. "Kill that man, will you? His father killed me last time."
The dragon nodded, and then snarled, and barreled toward you.

This seems like a fairly good plan.

Don't want him getting to Astora, and a fully blind dragon while still dangerous is significantly less so.

We have no idea how to get astora's gift back if it does get stolen, and we might have to keep him alive to do so. If we can even get it back at all.

Therefore, the top priority is to take out the wizard. We might get clawed up a bit, but even if we die, astroa and cass can look after arianna.
>>
You whip your gun down to the wizard, and with another blow, you shoot him in the head. But... the moment you pull the trigger, sand gets in your eyes, the bullet slamming into the ground just below his head. Then you turn to the dragon, and pull the trigger, blasting out the dragon's other eye. It roared, and dug it's claws into the ground. Cass launched toward it, spear in hand, and pounced, the spear digging into the dragon's wing.

"Well!" The wizard said, wobbling back up to his feet. He grinned at you, limping. "That's a rather dangerous weapon. 'Lucky' thing I acquired the Gift of Fate, or your weapon would have killed me!"

"Shame that luck can't protect you from certainty." You say, and dive toward him. He opened his mouth to say something, and you jammed the gun into his mouth. You were about to pull the trigger, when there was a hot pain in your chest, and you were thrown back. A massive fist, made of sand, was in front of him- it'd punched you.
"That one was the Gift of Earth!" He said. "I have five more Gifts. I'll have to drop one, but I'll be fine. I don't need the Gift of Vermin after this, of course. But it looks like that troll lady is going to kill my dragon, so I won't need it."
The air around him twisted, and he vanished just as a plume of flame burst up where he was, Astora holding her blazing hand.

You got to your feet.

It was hard to breathe, but you didn't care.

The wizard reappeared, and adjusted his turban, patting out a small fire on one end. Astora, on her knees from the pain, hissed and tried again, and the wizard moved.

Your muscles started trembling.

"Well, maybe I'll drop the Gift of Names too, for your flame one." The wizard said, grinning. He stepped toward Astora-

And the fury building in your body went cold. Very cold. Abel dropped away from you, and your body, of it's own accord, lashed forward.
"Gift of earth, Abel!" He called, and several series of fists burst out of the ground, trying to hit you.

You clawed your way through, stepping from fist to fist,
And then you punched him the fuck out. The wizard went sprawling, unconscious.
You drew your sword, and twirled it in your hands. Subtly, you could feel something trying to twist your hands, to make you miss, and you felt reality itself trying to cheat the wizard a way to live.

You didn't care. You plunged the blade into his throat, and he started to gurgle. You pull the blade out, and plunge it again, into his heart.

The dragon, behind you, collapsed, as a tall, nude and scale covered, muscled Cass stood there, enormous, acid-dripping teeth in her mouth, and enormous claws hanging from her hands, muscled abs twisting in unnatural ways. With a screech, she bit into the dragon's neck, tearing sinew and scale as she mauled the beast's head off, her tail smashing into the dragon's skull repeatedly.

"Gift of Death, motherfucker." You said.
Talbot, back in the caravan... blinked. Cass collapsed, and Astora was on her hands and knees, sobbing and holding her flaming hand, her entire body wracked with pain. Just in case, you plunge a dagger into his chest, and leave it there.

"Are you okay?!" Ariana asked, rushing out of the caravan, Kale and Tannis following her. Kale rushed to Cass, checking her eyes, while Ariana put her hand on Astora's shoulder.

"... I wasn't fast enough to help." Tannis said, looking down at the wizard. "Sorry."

"I'll be fine." Astora snarled. "'s just pain. Ffffuck that wizard."
"Astora, breathe deep." You say, and you breathe deep yourself- pain flashes out from your chest, and Tannis helps you keep standing. "Kale, is Cass alright?"
You make your way to Cass to make sure she was okay, and she was unharmed- the scratches on her back and tail were already healing, as the scales covering her body receded to skin.
"She's fine. Troll healing." He said. "Now, I'll glamour her for modesty. Seems she burst out of her clothing."

I'd say this counts.
No doubt the crones would have wanted the wizard dead.
>>
"Thanks." You say, and help the group back into the wagons. While climbing in, Ariana bumps your chest, and you hiss. You pull up your tunic and examine your wounds- the Gift of Earth had bruised you badly, a massive, fist-shaped bruise on your chest. Cass was unconscious and Astora was breathless, sweat beading on her forehead. When she saw your bruise, she giggled. "It's shaped... it's shaped exactly like a fist. That's... that's hilarious." She said, lightheaded.
"You three need anything else?" Kale asked.
"... I wonder what dragon tastes like." You say dryly.
"Oh, okay. Hey, Kale, let's go carve that thing up. The scales might make good armor, too." Tannis said.
"Oh, very well." He said. "I'll need something to cut with."
You toss him a knife, and Kale and Tannis left to go dissect the dragon.
"... So yeah, that was a wizard." Astora said, eyes closed tight as she tried to breathe. "... Also, I think I broke a wing. Fell out of the air. Now I get to limp to sanctuary. Yay."

"... Was this my fault?" Ariana asked, quietly.

"Nope." You say. "Maybe if you had brought him back on purpose, but you didn't even know what the gift was at the time."
"... Okay." She said. "Hey, Astora?"
"Hm?"
"... Could his gift of fate worked after he was dead? To... make me bring him back?"
"I.. don't know." Astora said. "That's disturbing to think about, actually."
You pull out the vial of Aqua Ignis, half full, and upend it. It burns as it goes down your throat, and then your bruise starts tingling. Eventually, the tingling grew hot, almost painful- but not as painful as the bruise itself.
"But hey." You say. "Now we know what your new gift is. He said your gift was more powerful than Tori's, and you bring the dead back to life."

"Wait, more powerful?" Ariana asked.
"Congratulations." Astora said. "You're going to be nobilis."

Talbot made his way to the wagon.
"Are... you all okay back here? I hope nobody was hurt." He said, quietly. "I wish we could have helped, but... we're not fighters."
>>
>>22322462
so the wizard was gone/dead for 20 years, and dead since our father was hear at least. So we could quite easily go back to resurrect our mother, if we so desired. Should we bring this up? It might be a terrible idea.

There was a moment of silence, and then Ariana pulled you into a hug, gingerly trying not to nudge your tingling, burning bruise.
"Thank you for protecting my sister." She said.
"Hey, you butt, that's what I was going to say." Tori said, with a half-smile.

"We need to be prepared if something like this happens again." You say. "We need to kill him permanently. How?"
"Rowan." Astora said. "Always Rowan for the undead. Should help. You could drop one of your arrows into his ash pile, and that should do it."

The burning in your ribs already started to fade, along with the pain. You pull out your revolver and count the bullets- you have two left. Next, You pull out two rowan arrows, and hand them to talbot. "Please put these in the ash."
"Of course." He said, with a nod.

"Think you can use your Gift to light him up?" You ask.

We need a mold for that, and it has to be exact And then the actual reloading of the shells requires some specific tools that we don't have.

It's going to be a lot harder to refill those bullets you know. We'll need cordite instead of the crude gunpowder we've been making. Furthermore, there's no way we'll be able to refill the primers used to ignite the gunpowder. We'd have better luck sleeping and trying to generate ourselves more ammo, I think.
>>
"How's the hand?" You ask. "Did you undo all my hard work?"
"... I don't want to find out." Astora said, and laughed. "... Just don't hate me if I screwed it all up."
She focused, and the fire in her hand died... leaving the scales and talons intact. It was strange- the scales were intact, but it looked like they were floating on the surface of a hand made of magma, bubbling and molten.

"... It's not ruined!" She said, grinning. She sighed, and wiggled her hand. "I'm not going to seal it up so completely this time, though. That... really hurt."
"Won't it be bad that you used your Gifts?" Ariana asked.
"... He was a wizard." Astora said. "Of course it was fine. Hell, the crones themselves would descend upon one, even if it would ruin a witches' coming of age."
"Oh, okay." Ariana said, and smiled. "I do wish that hadn't happened, though. I don't like how you all got hurt. Even if you'll be fine."

You pull her into another hug, and hug her tightly. Only then do you realize that you'd been shaking the entire time, ever since the back of your mind... broke, and your mind went cold. You take another deep breath, the pain in your chest still subsiding, and try to calm down.
You turn to Astora. "Can I touch it, or does it burn?"
"It won't burn." She said, and touched your cheek with it. "I can control how hot it gets. Can't make it colder than the... uh, what's the word, though."
"Ambient temperature." Ariana said.
"Yeah, that. But even though it's fire, or magma or whatever, it's cold. Relatively."

>>
You reach up, and nudge one of the scales floating on the lava, but it was rigid, and stayed in position where they'd been carved. Ariana sat down next to you, and leaned back, looking outside the wagon.

Eventually, Kale came by.
"We finished carving up the dragon. How are you doing?" He asked.
"We're doing okay." Ariana said.
"That's good to hear." He said, grinning. "We have the dragon's scales, meat, and the largest claw."
He tossed the claw into the wagon, and Astora caught it.
"That's for Cass. She'll want it when she wakes up. But Talbot said he'd carry it all for us to the city, but once past that, he can't afford the space for it."
>>
>>22323088

"I bet we could make pretty good armor from the scales. How tough is dragon scale conpared to steel?"
"I... wouldn't know..."
"It's about as strong." Astora said. "I guess if you made it right, it'd be like a heavy version of chainmail. Pity it isn't red, or I'd want armor made out of it. I can't be wearing scale from a green dragon, not when my familiar is red."
"Thanks, Kale." You say.
"Well, if you're all fine here... Oh! I almost forgot."
He waved his hands, and then twitched them, and a set of yellow clothing appeared. "For Cass. It's made out of sunlight, and should serve until she gets new clothing."
You nod, and then Astora and Ariana boot you out of the wagon so they can help her get dressed. While you wait, Tannis brings up some dragon meat.
"Here!" She said. "It's really good."
You take a few bites, and it was stringy and tough- but very spicy, and rather satisfying.
You sigh. "That's one less dragon in the world."

Astora grinned.
"Is Cass awake? Can I talk to her?"
"Not yet." She said.
"From what I was told," Ariana said. "Cass has to sleep for some time after going berserk." So we'll just have to wait.
"Oh well." Kale said, and sighed, and shrugged. "Me and Tannis will go tell Talbot we can go. The sandborn buried the ashes with the rowan wood, so he shouldn't come back."
He saluted you, and he and Tannis made his way to one of the wagons. Soon enough, the caravan set off again.

Astora sighed, leaning back, while Ariana checked on Cass again.
"I hope she wakes up soon." Astora said. "After this little butt forced us to make up, I've grown quite fond of her."
Ariana grinned at her.

"I never said I wanted *you*." She said, hmphed, and crossed her arms, closing her eyes.

Time passed, and the sand faded, making way for sparse grass, and sparse bushes, turning into thick grass and thick bushes, and as time went on, the wagons slowed to a stop. You got out, and looked forward. And the city of Lys stood there, walls of cooked clay. Men standing at the walls stood there, chain and scimitar in their hands.

"Well, looks like we're here!" Ariana said, as your group climbed out. You make your way to the head of the caravan, and find strange people standing there, swathed in thin, black flowing robes and cowls, holding staves with ankhs on their heads. Talbot stood in front, staring at the men in the robes.
"Oh no." Tannis said, frowning and sidling up next to you. "Those guys again. They... really don't like us."
"Don't those staves mean they follow Agaeros too?" Ariana asked.
"They aren't sandborn. They're monks." Tannis said. "Call themselves sufferers. They're stupid."

"Why would you worship a god devoted to love and happiness by suffering? That makes zero sense."
"That's what I thought." She said. "They think of it like... if they try to take the world's sadness into themselves, then other people can be happy instead of them. Agaeros is the god of charity too, and that's how they think of it. Giving away their happiness. It's a much smarter idea just to help everyone and be *cheerful* about it. But that's what they choose to do."
"What's their beef with us?"
"Because we worship Agaeros 'improperly' or whatever." Tannis said. "They think we dishonor her."
"Hopefully your father can talk us past."
"It'll be fine." She said. "Mostly since they don't talk. Vow of silence or something."
Soon enough, the black-robed monks moved aside, and the wagons rolled closer to the wall, before the sandborn themselves climbed out.
"Well, this is Lys." Talbot said, waving you over. "How is Cass?"
"Still sleeping." Ariana said.
"Hm. Well, we can keep her here until she wakes up, if you want." He said. "But the city's open to you now."

"Oh, really?" He asked. "We'd love to have some help."
"Yeah, I'll help too." Ariana said.
"Yay. Weeding." Tannis groaned, then sighed. "Yeah, I might as well come with."
"Weeding?" Astora asked.
"... There's quite a few farmers to the north, just outside of the city." Tannis said. "So every time we come by, we give them a hand. It's what we do. Weeding, tilling, watering, all of that. You guys still want to help? It'll be a lot of work, but it's easy when we all do it."
"I'll stay here with Cass." Astora said. "So I can take her by when she wakes up."

"I'm not above weeding a field." You say. "I want to stay with Cass, but I guess we can help out."

Some time later, the sun was high in the sky, and you wiped your brow, sweating badly as you worked in the field. Your bruise was still rather tender, but if you were careful, it didn't hurt much.
"Abel, here." Ariana said, giving you a full waterskin and taking your old one. She had nearly a dozen of them slung over her shoulder. "After you, Tannis, and Kale finish the field, Mister Talbot said you're done for the day."
You nod, take a long drink from the waterskin, and get back to weeding.

Some more time later, the sun was mostly across the sky, nearly four hours from sundown, the sandborn made their way back to the wagons, exhausted- but you, surprisingly, felt fine. Kale was fine too, but that's because he confided in you that he was eating the weeds.
"I'm lucky, actually." Tannis said, smiling as you made your way back to the wagons. "I'll be too tired to attack anything tonight, since it's still new moon."
When you get back to the wagon, Astora and Cass waved.
"How was it?" Astora asked.
"Hard work." Ari responded.
"Nice change of pace from fighting kraken and dragons."
"Hey." Cass said, eyes half lidded.
>>
>>22324098
"Here she is! The one who slew the Dragon!"
>>
>>22324098
Hugs are in order. Many of them.
>>
>>22324098
>he was eating the weeds.
Oh kale, you so funny.

>>22324098
Hey Cass!
Hug her.
You did fantastic, you were al like RAR and the then CRUNCH and then it had no head!
>>
>>22324098

"good morning sunshine (clothing lol), you slew a dragon!"

see if she wants some dragon meat.
>>
>>22324098
"Surely you wish to consume the flesh of the beast you have slain?"
>>
"Here she is!" You say, grinning. "The one who slew the dragon!"
"You're the one who broke reality." Cass responded, and rubbed at her eyes. "And you-"
You pull her into a hug, and she went silent and froze for a moment, before hugging you back.
"What's this all about?" She asked, grinning.
"You did fantastic!" You say.
"I *know*." She said. "But you blinded the thing. I couldn't have gotten under it if it wasn't for that."
"You want some dragon meat?"
"Of course." She said, and swished her yellow dress. "Kale, what's *with* this? Why yellow?"
"Sunlight." He said, and shrugged. "It'd be silver if we had moonlight, but it wasn't night. It'll vanish after sundown, though."
You toss her some of the cooked dragon meat, and she started chewing, grinning.
"You have no idea how satisfying this is." She said.
>>
>>22324233
"We saved one of the dragon claws for you, it's in the back of... one of these carts."
>>
>>22324233
"I am told there is no more a satisfying feeling than consuming your enemies."
>>
>>22324233
If you want to thank me for blinding it you'd have to thank my father for taking it's first eye. No, it was you that bested the beast.
>>
>>22324233

"i can make an educated guess. Very."

if everyone is up for it we can head in to the city and see some sights/get some stuff. we could also wait till tomorrow since working the fields took it out of some of us.
>>
"If you want to thank me for blinding it, you'd have to thank my father for taking the first eye. No, it was you that bested the beast."
"Well, if you insist." Cass said, with a grin, and put on a necklace- it was made of simple twine, but carried the dragon's claw.
"You guys ready to explore the city?" Tannis asked.
"We could wait until tomorrow since working the fields."
"I'm raring to go." Tannis said. "And then Kale isn't exhausted since he ate on the job."
"But *I'm* exhausted." Ariana said.
"... Yeah, it can wait until tomorrow." Tannis said. "It's going to be sundown soon, anyway."

Some time later, sitting near the crackling fire, after sundown, Tannis touched your shoulder. "Abel?" She asked. "Can you come with me? I want to show you something."
>>
>>22324440
Sure thing.

shout out "Going exploring with Tannis!"
>>
>>22324440
"Sure thing. What is it?"
>>
>>22324440

sure thing, want me to bring along a log?
>>
>>22324440
"Oh?"
>>
"Sure thing." You say, and call out to the rest of the group. "Going exploring with Tannis!"
"Don't get clawed up this time!" One of the sandborn said, and they all laughed.
You turn back to Tannis. "Want me to bring a log?"
"No, I'll be fine." She said. "I was able to work things out with all that work earlier."

You get to your feet, and follow Tannis as she walks away from the wagons, away from the city, and toward the long, sprawling road north, where you'd just helped weed earlier that day.
"Past all these farms." She said, walking. After touching a small object to her arm, she focused, and turned entirely human, before grabbing your hand. "Dad never wants to come here."
She led you quite a way, eventually reaching a lonely cabin on a cliff. The sea sat below the cliff, smashing into it repeatedly, and you can see the smallest sliver of the moon in the sky above- almost a lunar eclipse, it looked. She made her way to the door of the cabin and started wrestling with the doorknob until it opened.
You look around inside, and it was... almost painful.

It looked almost exactly like the cabin you'd left, back home.

The same feeling of being abandoned, ownerless, everything covered in thick dust.
"This was my home." Tannis said. "Before dad started up the caravan."
She touched her chin.
"... I'm not sure why I wanted to show you this, and I don't know why I did, but..."
>>
>>22324613
"It's...like what I left, my home."
>>
Rolled 12

>>22324613
looks like wear I grew up :)
>>
>>22324613
Grab Tannis' hand. "This is... All to familiar."
>>
>>22324613
"It looks just like my home..."
>>
>>22324613

it feels so similar to the home i left behind back in the vale,
>>
"This is... all too familiar." You say, and take her hand. "It's just like my home. Has the same... feel."
She nodded, and then scrambled under one of the beds, dragging out a chest. You look on one of the tables, and through the layers of dust, you could see dusty pawprints- most of the dust here was almost a decade old, but the prints themselves were...
"I used to come back here every time we were in Lys." She said, jiggling the chest's lock, turning half-maenad to start poking at the lock with her claws. "But I never opened this. Dad told me... "
She clicked it open, and pulled it open. Inside... were intricate silver bracers and anklets, well forged, with simple clasps.
"Dad told me that these are why mom didn't kill him. Her own mother made these with her own hands."
She shrugged. "I guess it's a hand me down, isn't it? But what's all this other stuff..."
She picked up the silver loops, and looked underneath- piles of lace, dresses, some coins and jewelry sat there, open to the air.
>>
>>22324768
"I guess it's all yours now?"
>>
>>22324768

carefully examine the stuff, with her permission of course.
>>
>>22324768
It's beautiful, so detailed.

I suppose they'd keep you human?
>>
"It's beautiful." You say. "So detailed."
She handed them to you, and then focused, turning human once again. She gritted her teeth, struggling, before her ears popped back underneath her hair. She took them all back, and slipped them on, clasping them around her arms and legs.
"I suppose they'd keep you human?" You ask.
"Yeah, that's what they'll do." She said. "My instincts tell me to bite and claw, but if I don't have fangs or claws, It'll be okay, even if I lose control."
"Mind if I examine this stuff?" You ask.
"Go ahead." She said. You start looking through, and past the jewelry, the clothing, and the coins, you found... a small, simple satchel, with a symbol on the front. The symbol was strange- a star, with a strange gear shape surrounding it. You reach up to open it-
And it zapped you, forcing you to drop it. It fell to the ground.
"... What's this?" She asked, and picked it up. "... Skiitara? Why is a Skiitaran seal on here?"
>>
>>22324942
"Who are the Skiitaran's?
>>
>>22324942
They were the slavers, right? Maybe your mother came from the west?
>>
>>22324942
"No idea. Be careful though."
>>
>>22324942

let's not mess with that to much right now, my gut is telling me that Tannis can open it.

try to make out what is inside of it by touch.
>>
>Quick recap:
>Skiitara is an empire to the west. Atlask used to be populated by skiitaran slaves until they fought for their freedom. The Free Cities and Skiitara have been on tenuous political ground ever since a war almost a generation back.

"No idea." You say. "Be careful, though."
"What do you mean, be careful?" She asked, pulling it open. It didn't shock her. "Inside is just a book."
She pulled it out, and flipped it open, peering inside.
"... And none of it is in english." She said. "It's not atlaskan, either. I can't read it."
She sighed, and showed it to you. The words were all gibberish, and you couldn't understand any of it.
>>
>>22325071
"It didn't zap you?"
Try closing and opening it again.
>>
>>22325071

perhaps a diary of some sort? whatever is in there, the person hiding it must have wanted to keep it secret.

i think Tannis should hold on to that but keep it out of sight, might also want to discuss it with her father.
>>
"It didn't zap you?" You ask, taking the satchel.
"Zap me? Why would it?" She asked, trying to read the journal, even despite the dark. You close the satchel, clasping it, and then, once again, you try to open it- and you drop it again, your fingers tingling.

"... Oh." She said, reaching for it. "That's strange. I'd... I'd better put this back."
She opened the satchel again, slipped the book inside, and put it back in the chest.
"I think you should hold on to that." You say. "But... keep it out of sight."
"Um, okay." She said, taking the satchel again. She examined it, and then tied it to the rags around her waist.
She closed the chest with a snap, and slid it back under the bed.
"... I think it's a dowry." She said, quietly.
>>
>>22325071
"Keep that hidden. Don't want anyone to think we're Skiitaran."
>>
>>22325071
Huh. It zapped me when I touched it.
Um.. Tantan... Can I ask why you wanted to show me this?
>>
>>22325231
"It could be, but that doesn't seem like the sort of thing maenads would put much stock in."
>>
>>22325244
dude/tte. no.
>>
>>22325244
What? Why would- no.
>>
"It could be, but that doesn't seem like the sort of thing maenads would put much stock in."

She touched the bracer, and the silver rings on her forearms.
"Maenads wouldn't make these, either." She said. She started pulling at the rags she wore, clenching her fists. "Though... the silver isn't working well. I can't change shape, but I'm still... frustrated."
She shook her head, and ruffled her own hair.
"... I don't have anything else to say." She said, suddenly, awkwardly. "Should we go back?"
>>
>>22325414
>forearms
>I meant upper arms. Whoops.
>>
>>22325414
"Unless you want to stay for a bit.

How much do you know of your mother before she met your father?"

Also, ruffle her hair for her.
>>
>>22325414
"If you want.

I think your mother had to deal with the same frustration, but she did it because she loved him and because she loved you.

Thank you for showing this part of yourself to me." Give her a hug and scritches. "Let's get back, have Kale make some Glamour for you to chase."
>>
>>22325414
"Are you sure your mother never had to deal with that as well?"
>>
"Unless you want to stay for a bit." You say, and sigh. "Howm uch do you know of your mother before she met your father?"
"Well... she didn't have a pride or prowl, and her mother- my grandmother- made these bracers." She said, sitting on the bed, not meeting your eyes. "That's... all I know. She never told me much."
You ruffle her hair, and she suddenly darted back, scrabbling backward, grabbing onto the mattress tightly, clenching her fists into claws.
"... Don't, uh, don't do that so suddenly." She said. "It's new moon."
"... I think your mother had to deal with the same frustration, but she did it because she loved him, and because she loved you." You say, and give her a smile. "Thank you for showing this part of yourself to me."
"You're welcome." She said, quietly. "... I ... I should tell you why I brought you. It was because... well, if I ended up meeting someone on the road, I wanted to make sure you were here to stop me from hunting them."
>>
>>22325558
"I'd be happy to help, Tannis."
>>
>>22325558
I'll keep an eye on you, don't worry.
>>
>>22325558
"Don't worry, I'll make sure of that, no matter who you choose.

Though I can't promise that I won't test them and try to make sure they're good enough for you. You deserve only the best.

I'm going to pat you on the head, don't freak out or jump backwards."
>>
>>22325558

"you can count on me"
>>
"I'm happy to help, Tannis." You say. "I'm going to pat you on the head. don't freak out or jump backwards."
"Okay." She said, and closed her eyes tightly. You patted her on the head, and then she sprung to her feet.
"Okay, let's go back." She said, rushing out of the cabin- she didn't even wait for you.
You make your way out of the cabin, and close the door behind you, following Tannis into the night.
