No clue, but if he's referring to the one I think he it it's an AD&D issue.
I just remember it had a bag that if you put clothes into it and waited 6 hours the clothes would come out as if freshly laundered.

Clothes which change color when you look at them in the mirror and tell them what color you want them to be. Can include changing individual bits, adding patterns, et cetera. The Climate Box

This is a magical box done in black wood with silver trim. It can store up to 8 hours of weather conditions, enough to fill up a 10x10 meter area.

What does this actually mean? It means that you can store the feeling of a fresh spring morning inside the box, and let it out during a particularly muggy and intolerable summer day, or miserable, rainy winter one. As soon as you let it out, the quality of the light, the warmth of the air and the humidity all change to the way it was when you stored it in the box.

However, you can only store one charge in the box at any given time. The box can be refilled as many times as you want, but if you save up a very special day in it, you may want to keep it for a special occasion.
>>
Cookware that never burns the food.

A bell whose sound carries through the whole house, for easy summoning of servants.

Magically-heated baths.

Socks that keep your feet dry, whether from sweat or puddles.

Magical modeling clay for the kids -- normally soft and pliable, but can be fixed in shape with a command word. A second command word reverses the effect.

A belt that undoes itself when you really need to make a good impression. A prank gift for those you're not terribly fond of.

Gloves that deliver a mild electric shock when triggered by mental command. (Fantasy joy buzzers)

A Pen of Many Tongues

It appears to be an ordinary quill pen, although a close examination of the feather will reveal that the pigmentation is actually tiny letters.

When you write with the pen, it automatically translates what you intend to write into any language it knows, even if you don't know the language yourself. You can't use it to read anything written in languages you yourself don't know, and you won't even be able to read the letters you yourself wrote, but you will of course remember what you intended to write.

You can teach the pen new languages by keeping it between the covers of a closed book in the target language overnight.

The pen has no limit on its language capacity.

A crystal ornament that projects colorful light patterns around the room when activated with a touch. Different kinds produce different sorts of patterns, depending on the buyer's preference.

A picture frame that can have several different paintings put into it, cycling between them at regular intervals or according to user command.

A vase that keeps flowers fresh and vibrant indefinitely.

A flowerpot whose contents change to match the time of year, providing seasonally-appropriate floral decor throughout the year without the need to exchange flowers.

A welcome mat that magically removes all dirt from the shoes of whoever steps on it.
>>
Collar of Permanent Youth

This is a collar, seemingly woven of fresh green grass, though it is impossible to tear. If you put it around an animal's neck, that animal will stop growing or aging, remaining at its current state of development forever.

However, the collar doesn't work on humans, and it doesn't grant immortality or even significantly prolong lifespan - but it is a good way for your lady-wife to enjoy the company of an adorable puppy that will never grow up to be a large and hard to control dog.
>>
>>22396950

Well, it does add a little extra lifespan, simply because 15 year old kittens are less prone to getting sick than a cat allowed to age normally, but they're still not as healthy as a normal, unaged kitten.
>>
Lighter Gloves

A pair of soft leather gloves which act as a lighter when you snap your fingers. They have no real useful function other than amazing people when they ask you if you have something to light their cigars with, and that's only really impressive the first couple of times.

More of a novelty item, really.
>>
The Fingertip Piano

The Fingertip Piano is a box-set of ten silver rings, one for each finger on your hands. Once you have all ten on, you can play an invisible piano in the air, and actual piano music will be produced.

This item doesn't give you any musical talent or the ability to play the piano well if you couldn't have played a real one, but it does allow you to basically carry around a grand piano with you in your pocket.
>>
>>22397184
Well cheer up, you could always market it as a survival gear item. ALWAYS be able to light your campfire and, at the same time,. protect your hands!

Rolling pins that always get the dough to just the right thickness on the first pass.

Cookie cutters that always pick up the dough, depositing it neatly when you tap it on a flat surface.

Charms for the repelling of bugs, rodents, and other pests.

Collars that keep pets from running away.

A glass bead that glows cloudy when the person you're talking to is being moody/passive-aggressive and you don't realize it.

Marvelous herbs that produce unusual (but pleasant) smells and flavors when smoked. (They're actually just common weeds, dried and enchanted.)

>>
Collar of the Omnivore

Another item that only works on animals, not on humans, this collar lets the creature wearing it survive by eating almost anything. If SOMETHING in the animal kingdom can digest it, so can the wearer of the collar.

You can feed a cat nothing but hay and it will eat it willingly, if not eagerly. You could feed a horse a diet of raw steak and it wouldn't complain.

>Can I have underwear that pulls itself down as well?
Clothes that remove themselves when a command word is spoken. Certain notoriously amorous individuals have been known to buy entire outfits keyed to the same command, for swift and dramatic disrobing prior to the ravishing of a conquest.
These same individuals also have a peculiar tendency to find themselves suddenly naked in public when spurned former lovers are present.
>>
Pallor Cream

Comes in a glass jar with a cork lid. When applied to skin, it causes the skin to become very pale, as if it hasn't been exposed to even indirect sunlight for a very long time.

Very popular among the ladies in the equatorial colonies, but care must be taken - if you apply too much cream, the skin goes from fashionably pale to downright deathly. The user is advised to use this cream sparingly and err on the side of caution when deciding how much to apply.
>>
>>22397444
Conversely, a self-defense outfit that triggers when assaulted would be a pretty cool magic item too - straps that entangle the attacker, or a cape that detaches and imprisons one. Or veils like the ones from The Diamond Age, that are waterproof, shift with the point of view, can have their transparency altered, filter the air and are opaque from the inside.

The Door Into Summer

This large gate, covered in eternally green vines, is a time portal that only lets you travel into the future, as far as the nearest summer. Becomes nonfunctional during summer months.

There is no method of going back in time, so make absolutely sure you're willing to skip the intervening months.

Magically bred, miniaturised and colorfully patterned gelatinous cubes.

Coin that lands how you tell it to.
Magical facecream. Sleep with it on as a facemask, projects a glamoured idealised image of your face for the next day.
Magical sleep aid, helping you sleep - probably a very short duration forced sleep spell, to kick you into normal sleep.
Colour-changing dress
Elaborate magical illusory clothes - a dress of shifting leaves, suit of fire that doesn't burn, etc.
Trollskin hat - regenerates any damage.
Magical hat - can store material inside magically.
Illusory pipe - say you smoke a hallucinogenic drug, it projects an illusion of your thoughts while you smoke.
Book that speaks the words in it, has an actual magic mouth on it
Clothes/shoes that button/tie themselves
Children's clothes that freeze on a voice command by the parents
Children's clothes that scream when an act of mischief is done.
Quill that automatically writes what the owner dictates.
Soil or seeds for rapid growing flowers
Soil or seeds that let you change the properties of the flowers on command (change their colour, length, positions - eventually wears out).

Living, moving paintings.
Locks that lock themselves and blinds that shut themselves. Likewise, drawers and cabinets that open/close on command. Lights that go on and off on command.
Basic familiars - normal pet animals given marginal subhuman intelligence. (HUGE CONTROVERSY over these, maybe).
Cute, sown puppets of archetypal monsters that do basic monster behaviours when turned on - the beholder will stare angrily at you, the bullette will gnaw harmlessly with its cloth mouth and run around.
A series of programmed illusions creating a visual display when turned on (like a film, but probably shorter and more visually impressive).
Magical recordings of speeches, king's speeches, that kind of thing.
Item and accompanying telekinetic tablet, that lets you manipulate it from a range of 10, 20, 50 feet. Minor stuff like lamps, quills, etc.
Smoked glasses (sunglasses) that automatically adust to the light. Windows that do the same.
Magical hair/skin dye, lasts a certain period of time.
Magical fireworks that explode into programmed patterns and pictures.
Magically more comfortable high heels.
Magical jewellery - living metallic insects and the like. Maybe a screen of these that float in front of the face of noblewomen in more conservative countries.
Compass that projects an illusion of your location on an illusory map.
>>
The Stargazer's Glass

"His gaze pierces cloud, shadow, earth, and flesh." Thus was written of the Great Astronomer, and this telescope recreates that fabled ability.

When looking through the glass, clouds, shadows, living beings and the very earth itself become completely transparent, even invisible. The glass cannot be used to spy on things on our earth, but the heavens are plainly visible through it, even when looking downward through the very rock you stand on, or upward through sunshine or clouds.
>>
A basket that keeps plant-based foods fresh. Unfortunately, meat, eggs, and dairy products still spoil as usual, but least fruits and veggies won't rot, and bread never gets moldy or stale.

A straight razor that doesn't cut hair, but rather causes it to grow according to the user's mental image when passed gently over the face. Also capable of styling hair that's already there.

Jewelry that gives mental reminders to you to make sure you remember all the appropriate niceties of polite conversation.

great for defending oneself at the coffee shop!
>>
Magic Feather

Holding this feather removes all doubt, uncertainty and fear from the user's mind. It does not prevent failure nor instil any additional skill or ability in the user. Instead, it makes you certain that there is no way you can fail through simple pluck and natural talent, regardless of your actual level of ability, or the difficulty of the task you are attempting.

Extremely highly prized.

Tin Soldiers

(A Game for Boys from twelve years of age to one hundred and fifty
and for that more intelligent sort of girl who likes boys' games and books)

This is a set of tin soldiers, half colored red, half colored blue. Each side has three different units - footmen, cavalrymen and cannon.

Once the battlefield has been set up, these toy soldiers will act out battles, killing each other and dying most convincingly. Dead soldiers will not move until they spend a day and a night inside the box they originally came in.

The Sylvan Crown

A crown of brambles, leaves and flower blossoms, it projects a non-threatening aura to all nearby animals. No animal, no matter how skittish or prone to flee from human contact, will consider the wearer of the Sylvan Crown to be a threat.

The Sylvan Crown offers no protection from predatory intent. A hungry wolf will still attack you, but a wolf that isn't hungry and would have simply avoided you will not bother doing so, and will allow you to approach without leaving.

The Sylvan Crown also does not make the wearer especially BELOVED by animals - they will not come to you if you simply call them, or seek out your presence.

The Sylvan Crown will break should you kill an animal while wearing it.

Considering my dreams have a dickish way of disappearing from my brain before i can even reach for my real dream diary, I would give my left nut for this.

This ring is enscribed with the words "Nunquam uideant uos cruentatur*".

While wearing this ring, all your wounds are invisible, and you appear perfectly healthy and undamaged. Only your posture can give away that you've suffered a heavy gash to your side, and that your clothes are soaked through with blood.

*never let them see you bleed

>>22398424
See, AD&D, that would be four cantrips cast on it: Stitch (repairing damage), Color (preventing it from fading), Polish (for buttons and boots) and maybe Tie (if you have scrambled egg)

>>22397368
More importantly, how does it work? I'd say the best thing would be that it and the owner are linked, such that wherever the owner considers home, the pet does as well, and they're aware of its general location, as well as providing a morale bonus against things stopping them from getting home.
I guess you could use it for BDSM, but the main purpose would be that they'd move in with you and be useful in finding your way home if you get lost after a munch in an unfamiliar part of town.

Amulet of Eye Contact

While wearing this amulet, people find it impossible to break eye contact with you. For as long as you wear it, so long as you manage to catch their gaze, they will literally be unable to look away until you do.

If you turn the amulet around, the person who was looking at you will instantly look away and be unable to meet your gaze until you flip the amulet to its original facing.

Alright, I can let myself out, thank you.

Firestarter
When the user presses a button, this small metal token produces a candle-like flame. Originally sold as an survival tool for starting camp fires or smoking accessory, it has seen many other uses by the creative. It deals 1 fire damage every round and produces the light of a candle. Capable of setting flammable objects on fire. Flame lasts until button is released or 1 minute (6 rounds) later.

Ok I can't find a 0 Lvl fire spell in 3.5. Sure Ray of Frost (1d3 cold, ranged), Electric Jolt (1d3 elec, ranged), Acid Splash (1d3 acid, ranged), and Sonic Snap (1 sonic +deafened 1 round, ranged). But not a single fire spell. Any help?

Doesn't look like there is one in official materials.

But it's not like it matters; this thread's just about ideas, not tied to any particular system mechanics.

Pretty sure that Prestidigitation will do, as I swear I read a similar item being used for as an example for pricing guidelines(MIC maybe?). The SRD doesn't have the listed effect of having a small flame come from one finger though.
>>
>>22400270
It doesn't have that specific effect, but it's kind of open-ended. The PHB description of the spell adds a paragraph about how characters often use the spell to entertain commoners and children, giving several examples of tricks that don't fall under the first paragraph's description (which is what's on the SRD). And there's a "fun with prestidigtitation" section in Tome and Blood that elaborates on potential uses of the cantrip, explicitly calling out the ability to use your finger as a lighter. Tome and Blood is a 3.0 book, not 3.5, but the 3.5 version of Prestidigitation is identical to the 3.0 one, so presumably the T&B section is valid in 3.5 as well.

Thank you so much for pointing out Tome of Blood!

Made this thread

and haven't gotten many responses.
Looked up Tome of Blood and it has lots of stuff relating to my questions (not all though).

Not exactly a "magic item", but a great story nonetheless.

My dad used to GM AD&D, and he had a spoon that would magically make anything it stirred delicious. This was more then just useful for convenience because it also made poisoned food amazing.
