Last time on Marine Quest: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/22459737/

We last left off with our heroes revealing the sinister mermaid trafficking operation of the cursed Captain Blue and his cronies. Vice Admiral Dalmatian has taken them to Impel Down, and has named you as the Captain of the ship. He has left you Lieutenant Hitoshi and Ensign Cage to help manage the ship, and to make sure you don’t end up like Captain Blue.

There are a few matters at hand, marines. First you must select your officers, this will not be an easy process, as some men and women are more worthy of one position than another

Second there is still the matter of the mysterious Sanguine Pirates who were in cahoots with your old Captain. They remain at large and could still be trafficking merfolk to other buyers. You feel somewhat responsible to rid the seas of them personally.
>>
You are alone in your quarters now. You need to have your officers selected by the end of the day, or else chaos will reign on your ship and the “officers” Vice Admiral Dalmatian left behind might see fit to relieve you of your position.

>Current Officers: Lieutenant Hitoshi, Ensign Cage
>Positions available: Lieutenant Commander, Lieutenant, Two Ensigns

Let’s think about who we know…

>Master Chief Petty Officer Alfonso

Alfonso is your oldest friend in the Marines. He is a humble and supportive man, and is not afraid to let you know when you’re making a mistake. Alfonso has excellent experience with people, and is universally loved by the crew. As a result, Alfonso is deeply affected when anything ill happens to any one on the crew.

Excellent with people.
Poor at investigation.
Excellent with information gathering.
Fair in combat.

>Warrant Officer Marianne

Marianne is the perfect soldier. She is completely loyal to Justice and ruthless in the hunt to bring law to the lawless. Marianne is uncomfortable acting informal to senior officers, and verbally lashes out when her own subordinates are being inappropriate. Marianne also has an extensive knowledge about pirates, their bounties, and the abilities of particularly notorious pirates.

Superb in combat
>>
BY JUSTICE! It's Marine Quest again!
>>
Alfonso sounds like good first officer material.
>>
Hmm. Describe the duties and responsibilities of each position. And how many of each position do we have open/need to fill, just to be clear?
>>
>>22498767
We're gonna need to know the duties of each position. Also, JUSTICE!
>>
>>22498767
What are the duties and responsibilities of each position?

What do we know about Hitoshi and Cage?

Can we learn more about them quickly?
>>
>Medical Officer and Ship Cook, Big Ocean

Big Ocean is the gigantic head cook and chief of medical staff. Despite his size, Big Ocean is not a giant, although he is easily the largest non giant you have ever seen. Big Ocean is a reliable friend, and is universally loved by the crew as a cook and equally feared as the ship doctor. Going above and beyond the call of duty might as well be Big Ocean’s motto, and he often puts the needs of the crew above his own.

Excellent with people
Poor at information gathering
Poor at investigation
Fair in combat

>Petty Officer "Ricochet Read"

"Ricochet" Read is one of the best gunslingers on the ship. He wields no less than six pistols, and uses them all to deadly effect. Ricochet had a volatile relationship with the previous Captain, but you have gained his trust since you put Blue in prison.

You have a general understanding of most of the marines under your command. There are a few exemplary individuals who have risen above the rest since the Captain Blue Fiasco. However you still have a very limited understanding of the full capability of your potential officers.

Most of your knowledge is from your own experiences or second hand information from Alfonso. Luckily as a Captain you can now request official files from Marine Headquarters. You may request for three files at a time, and it will take a while before the fax transponder snail has finished printing the forms. Some of these officers you will not be able to command to act to the fullest of their abilities until you have one of these official files.

It is morning, first order of business is choosing your officers.
>Positions available: 1 Lieutenant Commander, 1 Lieutenant, 3 Ensigns
>Request Marine File(Choose three: Alfonso, Hitoshi, Marianne, Cage, Big Ocean, Rosewater, “Ricochet Read)
>Request to see(Choose one: Alfonso, Hitoshi, Marianne, Cage, Big Ocean, Rosewater, “Ricochet” Read)
>Promote a marine
>>
>>22498848
>>22498806

Lieutenant Commander is your second in command. He has the authority to speak for you in your absence. He or she is both your advisor, and also your champion.

Lieutenant is similar to Commander, but are more independant as they more commonly work with the crew than directly with you. Lieutenants are less important in an advisor role, and more inclined to a combat and leadership role.

Ensigns act as the support officers, and assist the Lieutenants and Captain in any way they can. These are the marines in charge of specific parts of the ship, such as a navigator, quartermaster or master gunner.
>>
>>22498859
Request Marine Files on Rosewater, Cage, and Hitoshi. We don't know any of these guys.

Hmm, I want Marianne close to us, but isn't a good choice for command given how much she sucks with people. Is there a position for personal aide/bodyguard?

I think we should keep Ocean as the Cook, but ask him to relay any concerns that the crew tell him about to us.

I'm not sure yet but Alfonso would probably make a good Lieutenant or Lieutenant Commander considering how he's already liked by the crew and doing one of those lets us delegate tasks effectively to him.
>>
I'd vote Alfonso for Lt.Commander, and then personally interview Ricochet with Alfonso present.
>>
>>22498901
Hm, well request info on the three we don't know. Big Ocean will probably want to remain the cook, but we should talk to him at some point anyway. And I can't decide whether to make Al a Lieutenant or Lieutenant Commander. On the one hand, the crew loves him, on the other, he's our most trusted friend and would make a great advisor.
>>
>>22498907
>>22498974

>Marine HQ request files on Lieutenant Hitoshi, Ensign Cage, and Sailor First Class Rosewater

Files will arrive in two turns.

>Alfonso has been nominated for Lieutenant Commander or Lieutenant. The crew is very happy with his.
>>
If we need to delegate command to the Lt Commander, Alfonso's people skills will serve him well.

Having a hardass martinette like Marianne as a Lt actually sounds like a good thing to me. Keep the grunts in line. They're hard dudes, they can take a bit of shouting and bossiness.
>>
>>22498724
Let's just settle it the shounen way: Make them all fight, the strongest among them become officers.
>>
>>22499028
Thats a terrible idea.
>>
>>22498859
>>Request Marine File(Choose three: Hitoshi, , Big Ocean, Rosewater, “Read)

Request to see(Choose one: Marianne
>>
>>22499036
Its a great idea. just make it non Lethal
>>
>>22499018
I further the nomination for Alfonso to be Lieutenant Commander or Lieutenant.

Really, for me, it's a bit of a toss up between him and Ricochet Read. Alfonso has charisma and info gathering skills, but Read is versatile and good at combat besides.
>>
>>22499028
That's a terrible idea, we'll end up with Marianne as Lt. Commander, when she's a horrible leader.

Strength of arms isn't everything.

>>22499018
Okay, Request to see Marianne. Let's talk to our resident sword nut.
>>
>>22499025
I thinking we make her the Master Gunner. She'd keep the cannon crews disciplined as a motherfucker.
>>
>>22499025

>2 votes for Alfonso as Lt. Commander, he will be promoted unless another nomination is put forth
>Marianne has been nominated for Lieutenant. Marianne was overjoyed, some of the crew tried to congratulate her but nearly lost their heads when she though she was being sexually harassed
>Files arrive in one turn
>>
>>22499018
Alfonso's our right-hand man anyway, so I don't see why he shouldn't be made Lt. Cmdr.

Marianne is a very potent officer and a major stickler for discipline, so she may be able to keep the crew in line. I'm not confident putting her in an officer position just yet; for the sake of the crew, they want a leader, not a slave-driver (pun unintended). Perhaps a long-term goal is getting Marianne to loosen up and be more personable. If she's on edge, then the crew's on edge, and no one's happy.
>>
>>22499092
She's absolutely adorable. Let's interview her while we're waiting for the dossiers.
>>
>>22499025
The issue is that she might be a little too shouty and bossy, and she might keep the crew on edge.
>>
>>22499092
I'm fine with Al being Lt Commander. But, in that case Read should be a Lieutenant since he's good at everything.
>>
>>22499107
Like I said before, toss up between Alfonso and Read for me. They'd both make a good Lieutenant Commander or Lieutenant. If Alfonso is made Lieutenant Commander, I nominate Read for Lieutenant.

I'd also rather not have Marianne for a leader quite yet... But that said, having her as an Ensign would be handy.
>>
>>22499138
Marianne and Read should get interviews, just to be sure.
>>
>>22499076
>>22499044

>Request to see: Marianne

There is a knock on the door, and you ask your guest to come in. Marianne enters the room in full uniform, her katana displayed on her side. She wastes no time to march in front of your desk and salute so sharply you worry that she accidentally karate chopped herself. "Sir! Warrant Officer Marianne here as requested, sir!". You sigh and tell the Warrant Officer to be at ease, to your satisfaction she at least stops saluting.

What do you ask her?

You notice that the fax transponder snail has finished printing out the reports. You will review them when your interview with Marianne has finished.
>>
>>22499135
She's only a Lt, there are three of them. If the non-coms and other ranks can't cope with a tough officer, they shouldn't have joined the service. They've probably had far worse in training.
>>
>>22499175
"I'll get right to it. After what happened with the *last* captain, I'm in charge of this ship now. I need officers before next sunrise, or this ship will have the shortest officer turnaround in Marine history.

"Why should you be my lieutenant?"
>>
>>22499175
Ask her what she understands the duties of a Lieutenant to be
>>
>>22499184
The other two lieutenants are our minders from Dalmatian himself. They're not so much officers so much as they are guard dogs (pun *mildly* intended that time). If we screw up, they'll deliver our head themselves.
>>
>>22499175
"Please Marianne, sit down. Consider it an order if you must.

I wanted to talk to you about the duties and responsibilities of the positions I'm considering you for, and I want you to tell me in all honestly what qualifications you feel you have and where you think you would do the most good. Don't consider only your strengths, consider your weaknesses as well, knowing yourself is extremely important for an Officer."
>>
>>22499184
Actually, there are two, and the Vice Admiral already gave us one. It's her or Read. And I vote Read.
>>
We should have the six-pistol-guy as master gunner. I'm sure he could teach the firing crew a thing or two.
>>
>>22499242
Actually, only one Lieutenant. The other is an Ensign.
>>
>>22499297
You get my point, though.
>>
>>22499209

>"Why should you be my lieutenant?"

Marianne looks like she was about to salute, but refrains from it as she seems to remember you telling her to be at ease, instead she just jumps a little in place. "Sir! I believe I would be an excellent candidate for Lieutenant! You should know that as a marine I am ready to do whatever it takes to dispense justice! I will prove to you through my ability to lead our crew to battle and take the fight to those damned pirates!" She throws her hands to her mouth when she realizes that she swore in front of her Captain, she composes herself quickly and looks at the ground as she continues, "My entire life I trained by the sword with no purpose! Sir, I joined the marines and my blade found purpose: J-JUSTICE!" She finishes the last sentence on the verge of tears, it's clear that this is the most open Marianne has been with anyone on the crew. You feel a bit honored.

You're certain she thinks she screwed up the interview, so you give her a reassuring smile and tell her that you will call back for her soon. She looks relieved to have left, you're sure she would never forgive herself if she started crying in front of her Captain.

Time to look over the reports.
>>
>>22499334
She is utterly adorable. Maybe a bit touch psycho, but adorable nonetheless.
>>
>Lieutenant Hitoshi

According to the files the Marine HQ has provided you with, Hitoshi is a powerful martial artist, able to use a few of the Six Forms including: Kami-e(the ability to dodge attacks by emulating the movement of paper), Geppo(the ability to literally jump off the air, allowing him to stay airborne), and Rankyaku(the ability to send out a sharp compressed air blade with punches and kicks).

The files also tell you that Hitoshi is a “Mur Mur Man”, and has the devil fruit ability to completely silence anything in an area around him (reports say that his maximum is 12 feet, but can be improved). This allows Hitoshi to do things like make no sound in combat, ‘edit’ what people are saying as they speak, and conceal the sound of his allies. The limits of his powers are unknown.

Fair with people.
Fair with investigation.
Poor at information gathering.
Superb in combat.

>In Combat the Devil Fruit Power makes Hitoshi more accurate than normal, as an enemy has a hard time tracking his silent movement
>In Combat, Hitoshi’s training in the Six Forms makes him much harder to strike, and hits much harder in return. Hitoshi’s melee attacks can also be used at a short distance using the “Rankyaku” technique, but will lose some accuracy as a result.

Abilities:
>Strike!
>Rankyaku!(Melee attack made at pistol range, loses accuracy)
>Mur Mur no Field 1!(Allies become more accurate in combat for 1 turn, Hitoshi can use this and a normal Strike! Attack)
>Test defenses
>>
>>22499360
J-justice c-captain
>>
>>22499325
Yeah, I do.

>>22499334
Ugh. Not making her Lieutenant feels like kicking a puppy now, even if I think she should be an Ensign and Read Lieutenant... Dangit.
>>
>>22499389
There were three Lieutenants when Blue was in charge of the ship, why would we only get two?
>>
Ensign Cage

Cage is a stern man. He has said barely a word ever since he got here, and is curt when receiving orders. It seems like he doesn’t fully trust in your abilities as a Captain just yet. Still, he follows your orders to the letter, and hasn’t said even a word against you.

According to the files Marine HQ sent you, Cage is a skilled fighter, and can use most of the Six Forms like Hitoshi. He specializes in the capture and imprisonment of criminals, and is skilled in the use of traps, snares, and a harpoon gun.

There is not much else here in his file…

Social and combat skills unknown!
>>
>>22499371
Im voting Marianne for Lietenant
>>
>>22499334
As long as we keep reminding her to take it easy around the crew -- a happy officer makes for a happy crew, after all -- she'd be perfect for Lieutenant.
>>
>>22499389
I maintain we make her Master Gunner. Tell her that we couldn't think of anyone more capable of keeping the cannoneers disciplined under fire, that should make her proud of herself.
>>
>>22499405
seconding.
>>
>>22499423
Why not make Read the master gunner? He's good at ranged combat, I'm sure that would rub off on the gunners.
>>
>>22499423
She's a swordswoman, not a gunner.
>>
We haven't spoken with Ricochet Read yet, though.
>>
>>22499423
I think Ricochet would make a damn fine Gunner.
>>
>Sailor First Class Rosewater

According to Marine HQ, Rosewater is an eager young woman who passed all of her tests with flying colors. She is particularly noted to be skilled in ship and weapon maintenance. You notice a demerit on the file where apparently she has sexually assaulted a few female marines. This apparently has been rectified although there is a note that says she still has a problem with being inappropriate.

Excellent with people(poor with attractive women)
Fair at investigation
Fair at information gathering
Fair in combat(Superb in ship combat)

Equipment: Mini-cannon

Abilities:
Fire Cannon!
Fusillade!(Does massive area of effect damage, uses up two turns with reload)
Cannon whip!
>>
>>22499402
We've got enough oversight as it is after the "Blue Bruhaha." Besides, they were more goons than proper officers. We should be able to run a tight ship with the people we have.
>>
>>22499423
I was actually thinking more along the lines of Ricochet as Master Gunner, we saw how good he was with guns in the last thread
>Captcha: Crew anyclary
well, we have a crew, but i've never heard of the ship anyclary
>>
>>22499461
Well I think we found our master gunner
>>
>>22499448
Because discipline under fire is more important than accuracy in a gun crew and I don't think the possibility of Read's skill with pistols translating to better cannon skills for the crew are worth Marianne's terrible terrible people skills.
>>
>>22499480
I agree.
>>
>>22499461
Rosewater and Read are our new co-Master Gunners. I can't wait for the shenanigans between Rosewater and Marianne.
>>
>>22499461
Hmmm....

Read for Lieutenant, Marianne and Rosewater for the two Ensign positions, I say!
>>
>>22499461
>>22499471
Huh, Rosewater might actually be good as a master gunner, as long as we keep them male or something. Let's have a chat with her first
>>
It is still morning.

Alfonso will be promoted to Lt. Commander if there is no other candidate by next turn.

Marianne will be promoted to Lieutenant if there is no overwhelming objection by next turn.

>Positions available: 1 Lieutenant Commander, 1 Lieutenant, 3 Ensigns
>Request Marine File(Choose three: Alfonso, Marianne, Big Ocean, “Ricochet Read")
>Request to see(Choose one: Alfonso, Hitoshi, Cage, Big Ocean, Rosewater, “Ricochet” Read)
>Promote a marine
>>
>>22499461
Nevermind, Master Gunner right here. Still think Read should be Lt., though.
>>
>>22499498
Request to see Rosewater, request file for Marianne, Richochet Read, and Big Ocean
>>
>>22499498
I say
Alfonso - Lt. Commander
Marianne - Lieutenant (we have to keep an eye on her and tell her not to go too rough)

Quartermaster - Big Ocean (or is that the position that keeps the equipment in order?)
Gunner Master - Rosewater
generic Ensign - Read
>>
>>22499498
What position is Master Gunner? Is that Ensign? Because Rosewater is a shoe in for that position.

I'm good with Marianne as Lieutenant, I wish we could have three so we could have Ricochet as well, but thems the breaks. We'll find a good ensign position and once we're allowed to have another Lieutenant we'll make him our third.

Request to see Rosewater and nominate her for Master Gunner.
>>
>>22499498
I agree with Alfonso and Marianne's promotions, though reading her file might help. She'll be a master disciplinarian, but again, we need to teach her to loosen the leash once in a while. She'll get better with time. Besides, at least the crew seems to be on-board with the promotion.

Let's talk to Rosewater.
>>
I object to Marianne being made Lieutenant on the grounds of her poor people skills! Leadership will be important for such a position. I believe that Ensign will allow her to use her skills most efficiently. Read is well-rounded and good at combat besides, which will be good for the Lieutenant position and the independence it possesses.

>>22499498
Hmm. Could we call up Read? And... What would the 'Promot a Marine' option involve?
>>
>>22499534
Big Ocean is already the ship's cook and doctor. I'm sure he has enough to deal with as it is, plus he seems happiest in the kitchen. I'm content with leaving him alone.
>>
Guys, we still have a third Ensign position that needs filling, if we're making Rosewater our second Ensign.
>>
>>22499574
Yea. Also after writing that >>22499534
I think Quartermaster is indeed the guy that keeps the equipment in order, which wouldn't make sense for him.
>>
>>22499534
That looks good to me, one thing though, interview Ocean first and make sure he wants to be QM before promoting him. People like him and he'd be good at keeping ship stores in order.

Between Marianne and Hitoshi our Lieutenants can wipe the floor with anyone and keep order, Ocean, Rosewater and Read can keep their parts of the ships in line and happy.
>>
>>22499574
>>22499578
What about Hitoshi?
>>
>>22499561
Poor people skills can be fixed with time. She's a master disciplinarian and can crack the whip at a moment's notice. She's devoted, straight-laced and loves her job. I like Read, and he's a cool guy, but considering how heated he got when dealing with Blue, not to mention our overall lack of experience with him, I'm not convinced he's high officer material, at least not right now. We can work with Marianne and help improve her people skills. I'm sure the crew is understanding.

Hitoshi is one of our minders from the Vice-Admiral. He's joining the crew whether we like it or not.
>>
>>22499614
He's the Lieutenant we got from Vice-Admiral Dalmation.

>>
>>22499498
I thought you said we only had space for two ensigns.
>>

Hmm. Very true. Read for just Ensign then, and Marianne for Lieutenant, yeah. I have no doubts Marianne will do her best to rise to the responsibilities she'll be given.
>>
>>22499721
That she will, she won't want to disappoint us.
>>
You ask for the crews attention as they're busy during their morning chores. You announce that you have promoted Alfonso to be Lt. Commander. The whole ship cheers and Alfonso is assaulted by pats on the back.

>Alfonso is now your Lt. Commander, an excellent choice! He can now officially advise you

>request to see Rosewater

You here a rhythmic knock on the door and you ask your guest to come in. A young woman comes in... if you're sure that is a woman under all that soot and grime. She notices you staring at her attire and gives you a sarcastically lewd look, "Oh Cap'n, please stop it's too soon!" You clear your throat and assure her you were just wondering why she wasn't in uniform. "Ah! Cap'n I am! I apologize I was just in the bilges doing some quick fixes to the boiler... let's just say my touch was too nice and the machine sprayed it's hot oily lo-"

You can feel your face reddening and nearly shout at Rosewater telling her that that is too inappropriate.

She looks upset, it seems she was just trying to lighten the mood with some crude engineer humor, "Apologies, sir. What did you want to see me about?"

You let Rosewater know you plan to promote her to ensign, and master gunner of the ship.

Her blue eyes get as big as cannonballs, "Really Cap'n?! Oh you won't regret this I swear!" She tried to clean herself up a little, trying to make a better impression on you you're sure, you can now see that her black hair was actually just blonde covered in grime. "I know the ship better than anyone Cap'n you'll see! I'll have her be the envy of the marines... No! The finest ship on the sea! Oh I have so many plans!"

She bolts out before you can dismiss her. Well that was a full 180 from Marianne.

>Request files: Marianne, Big Ocean, Ricochet Read, they will arrive in two turns
>>
>>22499721
>>22499728
I still think that this is a terrible terrible idea. But, as I'm apparently the only one who still does, I concede. But, she should be kept on a tight leash until she stops being such a hardass.
>>
>>22499758
Let's talk to Big Ocean. See if he actually even wants a promotion.
>>
>>22499778
Oh, definitely. Still, she's got us and Alfonso above her, and Hitoshi as her collegue. I think we can make do.
>>
>>22499758
Let's see Big O!
>>
>>22499778
That's the idea. We (and Alfonso if she doesn't scare him) will be working with her personally in the beginning. Help her get to better know the crew, know what the crew expects of her, and inspire her to live up to those expectations. She's a good gal, and she's always willing to improve. I'm willing to stick my neck out for her.
>>
You let the crew know that you have promoted Rosewater to Ensign and the position of Master Gunner. The men cheer and hug each other while the women only give each other concerned looks.

>BONUS ROUND.

To break up the monotony of interview after interview. You've decided to pick out your Captain's attire. You're having it tailor made to your size, when did we have a tailor on the ship? You will no doubt wear the Captain's longcoat over your shoulders but underneath...

>pinstripe suit
>all white suit
>all black suit
>your old navy uniform

And on top...

>shaved head, fresh out of marine schools style
>marine cap
>bandana
>maybe just a haircut(specify)

Voting will end after a period of time, I will stop all discussion after that.

Reports arrive in 1 turn.
>>
>>22499820
Hmm. Well, we could brevet her up to Lieutenant instead of officially promoting her. That way, if things didn't work out, we could rotate her out without scarring her record with the black mark of a demotion.
>>
>>22499758
Come to think of it, did we ever get a physical description of Marianne? I know Alfonso is the Abbott to our Costello, but not much beyond that. I like being able to picture the characters, if not the overall scene.

Ask and you shall receive.

>Marianne is a tall and unintentional femme fatale. You have no doubt that she attracts the attention of many men(and possibly women) on this ship even with her terrifying treatment of them. She wears glasses, and her dark hair is often tied up in a pony tail that reaches the small of her back. As Warrant Officer she is still required to wear the standard navy uniform. She is never seen without her ornate katana on her side.

>Alfonso is a large imposing man, but always has a smile on his face. His dark hair is cut very short, and he sports a normal goatee on his chin. Since his promotion to Lt. Commander he has taken to wearing no shirt underneath his officer's jacket. He wields a massive metal tetsubo as his weapon of choice

>do the unthinkable and put our arms in the sleeves
We got ourselves a real rebel here.
>>
>>22500039
You know you want to, can't have it falling off all the time.

And we should probably get "JUSTICE" written on it.
>>
>>22500051
Dude, the coats are held on by JUSTICE. AND JUSTICE NEVER FALLS.
>>
Voting is over for our attire.
>>
>>22500051

If you cant keep your coat on using just your shoulders, you don't have the heart of a true marine!
>>
i think it would be a good idea to have Marianne LT, this way she can keep Rosewater in line and like others have said we can work on her people skills
>>
>>22500100
Another good thing about Marianne as Lieutenant is that she's our best fighter. Given that our other Lieutenant is someone that Doberman installed having her as Lieutenant is a show of strength, a notice that we aren't going to let anyone bully us around.
>>
>>22500122
Hey, Alfonso's no joke either, and Ricochet is mean with those pistols. I won't deny that Marianne is more than likely our best swords(wo)man, at the least.
>>
You look at yourself in the mirror, and you have to admit you look pretty impressive.

Your tailor has made you a suit. Despite asking whether he could just patch together your old navy uniform, he tutted at you saying it would not befit a captain, we have to look the part. He compromised with the colours, and made you a white suit, with a navy blue shirt, you've decided to forgo the tie and instead have the top two buttons undone.

You decide you can't go wrong with the official Marine Cap, and tightly pull it over your short black hair.

To finish it off you throw the Marine longcoat over your shoulders, you decided not to put you hands through the arms... just like so many of your heroes!

Your tailor hands you a cigar to celebrate, and with a couple of puffs you decided you could get used to this.

You look like a bad ass.

>Back to our scheduled programming.
>>
>>22500167
Those two are fair and excellent in combat, respectively, but Marianne is Superb, she is the best fighter on our crew. Of the people on our crew she's probably the one with a good chance of taking down Hitoshi.
>>
>>22500190
I wonder how strong the pressure on these would be...
>>
>>22500223
That would depend on the tension in the spring.
>>
You call the attention of the crew again. You announce that Marianne has been promoted to Lieutenant, and as a result the remaining ensign positions will be filled by Big Ocean and "Ricochet" Read. Big Ocean will keep his duties as ship cook and chief medical officer and will be assisting Ensign Cage with his Quartermaster duties. Read will be assisting Rosewater as Assistant Gunner.

Here are your staff:
>Lieutenant Commander Alfonso
>Lieutenant Marianne and Lieutenant Hitoshi
>Ensigns Cage(Quartermaster), Rosewater(Master Gunner), Big Ocean(Doctor and Cook), and Ricochet(Assistant Gunner)

The reports came in! Even if you have made your choices, you can still stand to learn more about your crew.

>Reports and next decision for the thread coming next
>>
>Big Ocean

According to the files Marine HQ sent you, Big Ocean is acknowledged for being a flexible cog in the Navy. He has several demerits on his file concerning some incidents, most notably when he mixed up which job he was supposed to do and filled an injured marine with stuffing while performing surgery. Big Ocean rectified his mistake, but the marine remained slightly traumatized and has a chronic fear of stuffed foods. Despite his past mistakes, Big Ocean is a superb cook and a skilled surgeon and is almost never off duty because of this.

Excellent with people
Poor at information gathering
Poor at investigation
Fair in combat

Abilities:
Strike!
Surgery!(Heals an ally)
>>
>>22500380
That poor marine, that's absolutely hilarious.
>>
>Marianne

According to the files Marine HQ sent you, Marianne is an extremely gifted swordsman. Her father’s dojo is considered one of the best on the seas, and HQ often sends marines there to learn. Since joining the Marines, Marianne has inherited an O Wazamono Grade Sword (or: Great Grade Sword). This katana is one of a kind, and there are only thirty two other swords in the world than can claim its equal.

She is noted during psychiatric examinations to have a deep grudge held against her father. Curiously, further investigation shows that Marianne and her father had a heated argument which was the catalyst for her to join the Marines. The reason for the argument is unknown.

Poor with people
Fair at information gathering
Fair with investigation
Superb in combat

Abilities:
Strike!
Six Crashing Waves Style (Marianne strikes an enemy, and any enemy adjacent to the target)
Rising Tide (Marianne launches her enemy into the air, making them easier to hit for the next person attacking)
Test Defenses

>Ricochet

Ricochet's file is riddled with demerits and warnings. It seems he has a long track record of problems with authority. Ricochet's most notable infraction was when he 'accidentally' shot Captain Blue by ricocheting a bullet off a ship bulkhead. Skimming past the warnings and negative content, you pieced together that Ricochet is well liked by the common crew for his "rebel" attitude. He is also a gunslinger without peer on your ship, and his skill with all six pistols is often talked about among the crew. Now that you're Captain, it seems you might have to deal with Ricochet's attitude if he wants to maintain his reputation.

>Fair with people
>Fair at investigation

>excellent in combat

Skills:
>Fire Pistol
>All Guns To Bear(Uses all pistol shots, takes a turn to reload)

You hear a fake pout from the transponder snail followed by an "Aye aye Cap'!". This woman will give you a heart attack you swear.

You are now heading for Mining Island, this will take a few turns, even with the access to the speedy Marine currents.

He seems genuine enough, and you're happy that you know Hitoshi and Cage will follow your orders when the time comes.

>Cage

"Cage is a mean bastard, and he's not here to make friends. Still though he's got a nose for hunting down pirates, and almost as good at catching them. >Mariane: Strike!

The pirate gang rushes to intercept you and your officers. Marianne has her eyes set only for First Mate Carl, she evades the clumsy swings of the Pirate Gang. The strike from her katana is just as fast as you remember, and the near invisible blow neatly removes the left arm of Carl. He screams as his forearm lands on the ruined deck.

>Ricochet: Fire pistol(5 shots remaining until reload)

Ricochet fires into the mass of pirates and has no lack of targets. His bullet punches through a pirates chest, sending him overboard through the force of the shot.

>Cage: Spread the Net!

Cage rushes forward and angles his harpoon gun upward and fires. The arcing shot splits into a large net, and easily envelops the writhing Carl

>Captain Abrams: Flurry!

You're forced to deal with the Pirate Gang before you can assist Marianne with Carl. You sent two jabs quickly through the Pirate Gang. Pirate Gang reduced to half strength!

>First Mate Carl

Aside from screaming and rolling around uselessly in Cage's net, Carl manages to pull out his pistol and fire a shot at Marianne. You see her blade flashing again and a small spark, she deflected the bullet with her blade!

>Marine Squad: Ready Aim Fire!

The Marine Squad fires off into the melee, decimating the remaining Pirate Gang.

"DAMN MARINES! WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE MESSING WI-- C-Carl? CARL!"

Captain Mason enters the melee, two more Pirate Gangs back him up. A few pirates have gotten onboard your ship!

Mason enters the fray with a bang. Literally. He has tossed several sticks of dynamite towards you and your crew. Three marines are taken out by the blast, and the rest are badly wounded(Marine Squad is removed!). Another stick of dynamite throws Marianne against a wall, it seems like it really hurt. The last explosive lands near you and Ricochet, and while you blunt the force of the explosion with your gauntlets, the damage done to you is substantial and it seems like Ricochet has been knocked unconscious. Mason readies a massive iron club and starts swinging it above his head.

>Marianne: Rising Tide

Marianne wastes no time getting back on her feet, and rushes Mason. Her dash is followed by an upward strike that seems to mimic a fantastic ocean spray. Mason suffers a deep wound and is launched into the air!

>Cage: Crowd Control!

Cage loads an interesting tube into his harpoon gun and fires it at one of the Pirate Gangs. The tube explodes in a cloud of smoke that leaves the Pirate Gang choking. One of the Pirate Gangs is immobilized!

>Captain Abrams: ROCKET PUNCH RIGHT

You're furious that this pirate scum took out your crew with something as stupid as a couple sticks of explosives. You decide to meet him with an explosive greeting of you own, and you scream your special move name as you leap in the air to hit him. You punch directly into his stomach and discharge the pistol into his guy, sending him flying down back into the deck. Mason is coughing up blood, but still ready to fight.

>Pirate Gangs

One of the Pirate Gangs are still waving away the smoke from Cage. The other one draw swords and rush Marianne. Only one of them manage to land a hit, and she suffers a minor wound. Marianne is tied up by the Pirate Gang!

>Ricochet is unconscious and cannot take orders!

>Mason

Mason gets up and swings his massive iron club. The swing slams right into you and winds you, this pirate hits hard! You don't think you can take another one like that!

>Marianne: Strike!

Marianne fends off the clumsy cutlasses of the pirate gang. But for each blade she parries, she sends an equally devastating blow back towards the attacker. Pirate Gang destroyed!

>Cage: Spread the Net!

Cage smirks as you order his attack, but quickly loads a harpoon similar to the one from before. Again, he fires it into the air and entangles Mason in it, though you don't think Mason will stay entangled for as long as Carl...

>Captain Abrams: Flurry

You've had enough, your men are badly hurt and you're hurting as well. You decide to finish it up with the old "one two" and charge the helpless Mason. Your gauntlets pound into Mason's head one by one, he's visibly stunned, so you follow up with your signature double hook. Your two fists slam into both sides of his face and smash it together comically. Mason finally falls to the floor, unconcious.

>Pirate Gang

The Pirate Gang clears the smoke but throw down their arms when they see their two leaders down and out.

>VICTORY! Captain Mason and First Mate Carl Captured!

Cage efficiently drags the unconscious leaders back to the ship, he orders a group of marines to do the same with the no name pirate grunts.

Marianne scours the rest of the ship for anything else but finds nothing.

Ricochet is taken to Big Ocean for medical care, and will be unavailable for combat for some time.

Alfonso and Hitoshi bravely defended the ship from any pirate attempting to board.

Rosewater has planted explosives to the decrepit pirate ship, and will blow as soon as you leave.

I'm trying to find a way to make combat interesting and fast, but not in a way where you just 1 hit KO everything. But if you don't 1 hit KO everything then it just slows waaaay the fuck down. I'm thinking of focusing more on investigation, so when combat does come up it's quick and definitive and more interesting. I should have just made the whole ship explode with that salvo, it did enough damage.

>>22503574

We are on Grand Line, not taking any big names in pirating out yet, but enough to take out these rookies crossing the Line. We are right before the Fishman Island arc, it should be happening right now actually, as our Captain was able to still snag away some mermaids.

You're well on your way towards the nearby Marine base. You're a bit flustered about how poorly that went. Mason was a 7,000,000 bounty! That's chumps change! Some crews have their cook or lookout worth more than that! You decide to go back to talking with Hitachi, perhaps he can give you some advice.

You find Hitachi leaning on one of the rails, he's not doing anything just...staring at the ocean. He notices you behind him, "Ah! Captain. Congratulations on the capture." he salutes casually.

You snort, you can tell he's being more than a little cheeky with you.

"Ah, yea, sorry. I'm so used to things being done in one punch after hanging around with a Vice Admiral for so long. There's a lot of room for improvement, and you did pretty well for commanding a whole ship your first time. Alfonso and I did pretty well holding up the ship..." He ponders for a moment, "If you like I can start teaching you the Six Forms?"

You are eager to the idea, especially since you felt so lackluster during the last fight. Feeling encouraged, you ask him about his Devil Fruit abilities.

"Ah yea, I'm a Murmur Man, I can make things quieter or no sound at all for example I can ---- to ---- edit ---- and things like that." You laugh as he tunes his voice in and out, suddenly the waves make no sound, the boat doesn't creak and the sea birds vanish, no sound at all is being projected at you. You find yourself extremely disoriented from it and you start losing balance. The sound comes back on with Hitoshi apologizing.

"Land ho!" The lookout announces the sight of the marine base.

Time to go hand these scum in.

You enter the dock flawlessly, Rosewater knows how to handle the ship indeed.

Your crew sets the plank down and you step off of your ship onto the dock. Cage follows behind you with a chain gang of pirates, Marianne and Hitoshi follow close behind. Alfonso remains on the ship with others while you are gone.

The commanding officer on base greets you warmly and congratulates you on the capture. He offers you a reward for bringing the pirates in and assures you they will live a long happy life in Impel Down.

You decide to take Hitoshi up on his offer to learn the Six Forms. You knock on his quarters, and he asks you to come in. His room is quite spartan, with not a lot more than the bed and desk, there appears to be what looks like a vivre card on the desk.

"Ah, Captain, here already? Aren't you the eager student" he chuckles to himself, "Very well, we will begin immediately, are you ready?"

You say that you are, and you remove your coat and jacket. You remove your gauntlets as well, although you don't think you could hurt Hitoshi even if you did.

Hitoshi has a smirk on his face as you do so, it seems like he had the same thought "Very well Captain, I want you to hit me, go ahead, throw as many punches as you can my way."

You throw as many hits as you can towards Hitoshi. Some of them are truly textbook punches, but Hitoshi manages to weave around your fists as if you were announcing where you were going to strike. You keep going but no matter how hard you try, not matter how many underhanded punches you throw, it's like trying to keep your grip on a fish.

Soon you are exhausted while Hitoshi looks like he was doing nothing but standing the entire time. "The first technique I will teach you is Kami-e. It means 'Paper Drawing' and it's secret is exactly that." He picks up the vivre card on the table and tosses it in the air. He punches at it repeatedly as it falls, but no matter how hard he strains, the card keeps ducking out of the way. "You see? The paper reacts passively to my attacks. You don't fight against the strike, you flow around it. You let the energy of the strike meet you first, and move out of the way before it hits."

Hitoshi assumes a fighting stance, "Now I will strike at you! Prepare yourself! Be like paper!"

You sort of understand what Hitoshi is talking about. As he begins to assault you, you relax and move out of the way. You start marvelling at how easy this seems until Hitoshi starts increasing the speed of his attacks, you go on for a few more seconds before you begin to strain. Finally Hitoshi sweeps his legs and trips you to end the spar.

"You are thinking too much! Don't think about where my attacks are or where they will be! Feel where your body should take you. Relax your muscles. The more you resist and fight your body's reflexes the harder this technique is to master." He sits down, and has a drink out of a jug he had hanging around his belt and offers it to you, you take a healthy swig. It's just water, you're not sure why you were expecting alcohol.

Hitoshi continues as you drink, "You were doing excellently for the first couple seconds, I truly saw the technique come alive there. But then you started thinking too much, over analyzing my movements."

You complain that he started moving too fast, but he smacks you across the head, "Then you miss the idea entirely! It doesn't matter how fast my strikes are! Slow strike, fast strike, hard strike, soft strike, do you think the paper complains about these kinds of things?".

You hear the lookout calling 'land ho' and Hitoshi sighs, "Perhaps next time you will understand. Come Captain, lets sort whatever this is with the locals."

You're annoyed at Hitoshi for his outburst, but you're more annoyed that you aren't living up to his expectations.

You see the island ahead and tell the crew to prepare for docking.

>Alfonso and Marianne

Alfonso grins as you name him out, "Finally! Together again! Was starting to think I did something wrong!"

Marianne quietly follows after Alfonso.

The first thing you notice about the island is the massive thick black cloud hanging over the entire place. The more you look the more you're sure that they're not rain clouds, but instead smoke clouds like from some massive industrial plant.

As you walk up the docks there is no one to greet you, and no other soul that you can see. It's equally as quiet, and the absence of activity is disturbing. If it weren't for the waves lapping up against the shore you could have sworn that Hitoshi was using his devil fruit powers as some kind of prank.

You continue up the docks to reach the edge of the town. Alfonso and Marianne are both on edge. Marianne has her hand on her sword, and has begun to move in front of you protectively. You can't blame them, this isn't the "couple disappearances" that the report was talking about, this place is a ghost town. Something very wrong has happened here.

There are a few buildings in the immediate area that you can investigate:

>a rundown bar, the windows are broken in and the door is off it's hinges

You enter the apparently abandoned house. The door is kicked in, and the state of the interior supports the idea that there was some kind of fight.

The fire is happy to burn on a little pile of knocked over furniture. You ask Marianne to take care of it and she quickly draws and sheathes her sword. The resultant gust of wind puts the fire out neatly.

Looking around you notice some documents on the ground, but they seem mostly related to business transactions concerning the mining operation. You fold them and put the documents in your coat pocket just in case. There is nothing much else on this floor, but there are stairs leading up to a second level.

"Captain! Footprints!" Marianne is kneeling behind some of the ruined furniture.

I'm sorry, I am late to the party and really should learn to catch up fully before posting shit.

I worry our butts are not prepared for the black giant known as PHIL.

I was desperate to fine tune ship combat and the tweaks I made to melee combat and had the marines run into them. The combat was incredibly boring and I'm pretty sure a few people jumped ship during, but at least I learned a lesson from that.

>>22504554
Well it wasn't boring, it just took awhile
I think most jumped ship because its getting late

Send Marianne to investigate upstairs.

By the way, we're approaching 400 posts. The thread is archived already.

>investigate the footprints

You go over to check to see what exactly Marianne is talking about, and she's right, a couple of footprints are right there in the dust. There seems to be only one set of them.

Yeah, I'm caught up now. I don't think the combat was too bad. I'm rather sympathetic since there needs to be a good balance between making the combat quick and giving some details; a wall of text for ever move would start to drag on.

I think it more comes down to who are we fighting. If they're chumps it make sense to just blow their asses away, while the 'boss fight' should have some good flavor thrown in.

But Uncle Phil...DO EEEEEEET.

You look at the footprints closely, from what you can tell they were made within the last couple of hours. The way the prints are shaped suggest an expensive shoe rather than the boot of a miner or sandal of a pirate. Other than that you can't tell much more.

Marianne then pipes up, "Captain, sir! If I may?" You nod, "Sir! The prints were made after the damage was done to the house!" You tell her to elaborate "Sir! It's unlikely that his much dirt and dust was allowed to settle in the house at the time of it's invasion! Sir! Therefore it is logical to assume that the person who made these prints came at least a few hours after the damage was already done! Sir!"

The girl makes sense. So there is a possibility of two parties then? Or maybe the attackers came back to the scene of the crime?

Suddenly! You hear something tumbling down the stairs! Marianne has already drawn her sword and Alfonso makes an attempt at a menacing pose.

The dust clears and you hear coughing and moans. It's a man! He looks injured, and is wearing normal civilian clothing. You go over to help the man, despite your officers' sudden warnings.

The man sees you approaching him and lets out a desperate screech of fear. In spite of his wounds he makes his best effort to get away from you! You stop dead in your tracks. You don't want to spook the poor devil any more than he already is.

"No, no, no! Just leave us alone!" You ask the man to calm down and tell you what happened here, "No! What are you talking about? Haven't you Marines done enough already?!" You look back at Marianne and Alfonso, and they look just as shocked. Did he say... Marines did this?

You seem to have left out some information, namely WHEN WILL THE NEXT THREAD BEEEEE?

When's the next thread?
>>
>>22504800

I left it out for narrative purposes.

NEXT THREAD WILL BE: SATURDAY 6:00 Pacific, or 21:00 Server time.

There were a lot of differences between this thread and last thread, and I got a lot of work to do to help speed things up but keep it interesting.

Crazy shenanigans there will be my friends. Crazy shenanigans and conspiracy plots just ready to be bust wide open by our plucky captain and his trusty nakama.

Since quest thread is over I leave the board open for suggestions and feedback. What you liked, what you didn't like. What you liked about this thread, or why you liked the last thread more. Etc.

I will also be answering any in universe OOC questions like: where the quest was occurring during the timeline(for anyone who missed it we are just at the beginning of the Fishman Island Arc)

So this is after Marine HQ moved onto the New World side of the Red Line? That would probably explain the corruption that's been running rampant.

Where abouts is our crew supposed to be in regards to power level? I doubt we're on level with Smoker and his G-5 crazies, right?
