Old thread saged to death.

Previous thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/22530358/

You are Doctor Edward "Holliday" Dunn. A prodigy of internal medicine, and an agent of the Special Intelligence and Intervention Network. You were looking forward to enjoying a rare mission of relaxation. As fate would have it, another SIIN agent double crossed you out of the blue, and nearly killed the Empress. You managed to bring her back from the brink of death and escape the ship you were deployed on. You're paranoid about the true allegiance of your employers. Though there's no concrete evidence that the SIIN was behind the most recent attempt on the Empress's life. You were recently deployed to the Kyoto Plague District, where you slogged through fungal zombies to assassinate an ex-Yakuza doctor, who was attempting to weaponize the plague.

After your success, there was an attack on the Imperial capital, the sudden attack has left Imperial forces reeling, and struggling to get back on their feet. You just killed a pair of would be assassins, at the cost of Lancer suffering a slash wound.

You're currently wearing Centurion's APS, with your Model 108, it would be +2 to Strength.

The team files into the bunker. It was a good thing that you had decided to ice those assassins. With kits like those, they could have shredded everything in here in under a minute. Lancer appears to be stabilized, and conscious. He spits a few caustic comments at Deacon, who laughs and replies with her own witty comment. Watchmaker seems to be upset, as she fiddles on the bunker's terminal.

Though the Empress seems to have been crying not too long ago, she's doing a good job of maintaining a good poker face. It slightly wavers into a smile as she sees you. You decide not to take any chances, and put yourself between the Empress and everyone else in the room.

"I told you I wouldn't let anything happen, didn't I?" You give her hair a ruffle, which causes her cheeks to gain a tinge of pink.

"Y-yes, ah, you did" Her "elegant empress" evaporates, and is replaced by an embarrassed half smile.

It seems like the Empress has taken your advice to heart. Hell, she’s braver than you were at age fourteen. You give another smile and hair ruffle before moving to figure out how to get the hell out of here. Watchmaker is still fiddling with the terminal, her expression doesn’t exactly instill confidence in you. Regardless, you have her contact the Dauntless, the captain appears on the screen.

“Agent Dunn, I would have hoped our next meeting would be more peaceful. Captain Petrovsky, at your service” You give Petrovsky the rundown of your current situation, he strokes his silver beard in thought.

“We’re assuming the rebels have blockaded much of the space around Earth, we can’t tell if the ships in the system are civilians or rebels. They’ve got some kind of stealth technology that we’ve never seen before. We’ve already lost three destroyers to ambushes in the system. However, we could have our best pilots try to slip past the blockade, and evacuate you. But if that plan goes south, I’m not sure what more I could do.”
>>
>>22605634

"That sounds like a good idea. There is one other option however... Despite their technology, they don't seem to have that many resources compared to the Empire, based on their asymmetric strategy. Based the fact that they seem to be concentrating solely on the capitol and deployed a single destroyer in fire support from my perspective they can't have that many ships. If you swarmed them and tried to play the "quantity has a quality all of its own" you could at the very least force a path open, if not localize and kill them. It'd be a throw of the dice though and even if it did work we have to expect a lopsided causality ratio. I'd recommend you order every civilian ship out of the system immediately." Captain Petrovsky seems to take this into account

"I could see that working. It would take time, evacuations of a system are never organized, obviously even more so if we added cannon fire to the mix. I'd say about an hour, maybe two if the evacuation goes poorly, until we can get to your location." A resounding boom from outside the bunker, followed by a cacophony of shouts, tells you that you don't have two hours. You thank the captain and prepare for hostiles

Explosions rock the outside walls of the Palace. They’re really hitting the place hard. According the sat images, there has to be a good hundred or so rebel troopers marching to reinforce their siege positions. You’d estimate that you have about half that number in guards, along with a light battlesuit. Regardless, an ambush on a position in their territory would be devastating. You give the order to the guards

“We’re going on the offensive, torch everything you can’t bring with you. Marking their staging area now.” Soon, everyone who isn’t actively fighting has joined you by the bunker. Lancer looks to be in relative good health again, he doesn’t seem to have any trouble hefting that beast of a light machine gun. Deacon, Centurion and Watchmaker, along with the two guards encase the Empress in a shell of APSes. You follow Lancer and take point.

The sound of reinforced drywall crumbling like dust is your cue to get out of here. Suddenly, as the rebels pour into the compound, they are consumed by an explosion. You’re a good ways away from the entrance, and you can feel the heat from here. The rebel frontline is thrown into disorder. Letting you slip away.

You slink through the alleyways again, and soon, your target is in sight. You turn to the Empress.

“I need you to keep your head down, and close your eyes and ears.” She knows what’s going to take place. She squeezes her eyes shut, clamps her hands over her ears and hides behind a slab of concrete.

As expected the rebels don’t have any clue that you’re lying in wait. Centurion aims down his rifle, and pulls the trigger, sending a bullet through the head of a rebel sentry drone. This signals your forces to storm onto the unsuspecting rebels. The initial fusillade of rifle fire has taken several idle rebels by surprise, the wide open nature of the square turned staging area indicates that there isn’t much cover to dive behind. Several rebels are killed before they can even react. The few that survive the initial barrage are forced behind cover. The rings of marksmen and sniper rifle fire kill those who the others can’t fire on easily. You’ve managed to punch a hole into their defenses. The Guards rush into the staging area, taking mounted guns and using them against. The storm of automatic weapons fire makes the attempt to retake their lost ground impossible, and the survivors fall back down a road, no doubt to link up with the frontlines, and have them attempt to retake the staging area. The defense of this location should be less flimsy than the Palace, after all, the Palace didn’t have automatic gun turrets. The battle suit takes up position in the middle.

You move the Empress into a building, Centurion and Lancer take up defensive positions around her.

"Well, that went better than expected, didn't think you had a tactical mind, killer" Deacon congratulates, you think.

>What do?
>>
>>22606467
What's the situation in the wider city? How many other pockets of resitance are there? I know that the army was trying to troops into the city. Is there any convenient thing we can blow up to let them do that?
>>
>>22606467
"If we can find some explosives, we could make the area leading up to this staging area a trap filled no man's land. I think our best bet is to just hold this area until we can get exfilled by the navy. Speaking of which we should probably get them on the line, update them on the situation."
>>
>>22606467

check for survivors, see if we can't get some more intel on what's going on. also, bolster the defenses, plug any gap that the enemy might try to make use of. possibly moving wrecked vehicles in-front of the connecting alleyways and the majority of the main roads. maybe rig some buildings with demo-charges to collapse onto large enemy formations as they pass by.

>>
>>22606467
See how scarred for life our Empress is, reassure her some, and see if we can get more information on how the battle is going in the city.
>>
You drop a beacon on the captured staging area, highest priority. Any survivors in the immediate area will be coming to support you. Given the recent reports from the battlenet, you don’t expect much. SIIN has been torn apart in their attempts to defend their headquarters. Nearly four hundred handlers, and half that in agents have been killed or are missing. There are transmissions that suggest Hackett has been killed as well, though no one can confirm. That’s bad. Really fucking bad. You were leaning towards deciding that Hackett was loyal to the Empire, with his friendship with the former Emperor and all. Now, there is a power vacuum that too many ambitious handlers or agents are all too eager to fill.

Regardless, the Guards are already at work, turning the roads leading to the square into a killzone of IFF mines and other traps. A few other Guards, agents, and even troopers stream into your area. The force has nearly doubled in number. Now things are starting to look up. You contact Petrovsky, and inform him that you’ve secured a landing zone, and are ready for evacuation. He bears good news for you as well, the sight of four battlecruisers advancing has intimidated most, if not all the rebel ships to flee the system. The destroyer bombarding the city is quickly reduced to a pile of scrap. He reports that dropship should be landing in twenty minutes.

As the defense solidify, you can’t help but to think back to the Empress. You did tell her to keep her head down, and not to look, but she’s a smart girl, it wouldn’t be hard to deduce that you’ve just killed people, and you’ve ordered others to kill people. You decide to check on how she’s doing, more on psychological level than anything else. When you enter the room, she regards you with a blank look, and fires an armor piercing question straight through your heart.

“How can you be so comfortable, knowing that you’ve just killed?” Clever girl. You’ve never asked such profound questions during the heat of combat. In fact, you prefer not to ask yourself those kinds of questions, in general.

>What say?
>>
>>22607117

"being a doctor means saving lives. lives can be saved in many ways. providing food, water and shelter can save people. preforming surgery on them is another way to save people. And unfortunately, killing certain people can save many more people. Would you prefer if we were to stop fighting the enemy? would you prefer them to kill us, our friends, our families, our allies? I say no. we will kill them, to save the people who they might, no WILL go on to kill. That is why i do it. You could consider my medical skills as an atonement for what i do on the battlefield, but know that I do what I do to save people. That is what is important.
>>
>>22607117
"Repression mostly. Soldiers generally learn how not to think about such things in the heat of combat. However, the sane ones have their nightmares. We're all surrounded by ghosts. Ghosts of those we killed and ghosts of those we save. All of our branches have shrinks on staff to help, and they do a great job. Still, there is only so much they can do." (Seriously, prostitutes have a lower suicide rate than soldiers.)

You wish you had a beard to stroke, to be honest, it was eating away at you quickly. You depolarize your visor, out of respect. The rebels you’ve killed probably had families. Parents who received letters that their sons and daughters weren’t coming home. That one, haunted, empty chair at the table, that would never be filled again. You shudder slightly at the thought. It doesn’t make you feel good. You can’t hesitate here, or you would be the one getting capped.

“Also because it's my job. I'll feel bad about it when I'm old and grey, and you've given your throne to your heirs.” The Empress nods sagely, and stares vacantly at the ceiling, probably contemplating your words. You hope she doesn’t think you’re some kind of psychopath.

“But it’s not your job to worry about that, running the Empire is enough to think about already” You conclude. You polarize your visor before heading back out to the field. Fifteen minutes. The staging area was looking to be more secure than the Imperial Palace.

The thunder of high explosives indicate that the rebels are counterattacking. That should have softened their numerical superiority by quite a few. The turrets spit out hurricanes of lead, however, there seems to be a rank of riot shield wielding troopers in front of the rebel ranks. The magnetically accelerated rounds ping harmlessly off the shields without leaving so much as a dent. The lack of tanks is a good sign, though. Callouts of riot shields indicate that the situation is similar on the eastern and northeastern entrances.

did we manage to rig any of the building to collapse on them? if so, now is the time to detonate them. if not, switch to arced weapons. if we don't have any of those either, try and get snipers in the buildings and take them down from above/behind the shields. the riot shield troops take priority over standard troops in regards to the sniper teams, the infantry and turrets can take out the masses, while the shields protect the enemy horde from our weapons.

You recall the demolitions experts debating whether or not to demolish the buildings, doing so would open the entrances to attacks from areas which you’re not prepared to defend. You decide for them, and detonate the explosives, crushing the shield line. The enemy line quickly collapses into the rubble. Deacon motions for you to follow her. You move into the rubble. Burps of weapons fire are deflected off your shot. Within the second, you’ve put two bullets in the perpetrator's head. You help Deacon raid and flush rebels out of their positions letting the turrets tear them apart. Ten minutes later, and the dropship has arrived. You personally escort the Empress onto the transport.

Soon enough, you’re on the Dauntless again. This ship has had some part in saving your life twice now. You’d have to thank Petrovsky for his assistance. Watchmaker probably still wants you to off that physicist and governor. But all you want to do is collapse in a bed, at this point, you really don’t care where it is.

"Empress I'm afraid that the current leader of SIIN, Placeholder, is missing in action. I'm afraid this likely means that the remaining SIIN agents will soon be jocking for posistion and influnce. I would reccomend making a selection before either a de facto leader emerges or SIIN splits into factions. Don't chose me, I would widely be seen as manipulating you and I don't have the Admin experience to do the job anyway."
>>
>>22611110

he was the 'father figure' to Emily and a trusted friend to Jessamine. though there IS implications from Pendleton and Havelock that Corvo might be Emily's actual father, nothing is confirmed.
I see it like when two people are very good friends, but everyone else thinks they are a couple. in the end, it is an extra little thing that makes you think. and buy the sequel/prequel.

it is also suggested that 'the heart' IS Jessamine's heart, though that is also a theory based on 'the heart's perspective of given characters and places.

You stave off your fatigue as best as you can, and drag yourself to the Imperial quarters on the ship. As you reach the door, you can for bugs. More of a habit than anything, if SIIN really wanted to listen in on you, all they needed to do was hit a few buttons, and your MT would be transmitting everything you say. You would be worried, if they weren’t too busy licking their wounds after getting their shit stomped in the matter of a few hours. You rap on the door, and wait for a response. The Empress answers, it appears that she’s getting ready to turn in for the night as well. You summon up your words through a haze of sleepiness.

“Your Eminence, I’m afraid I have more bad news.” She seems to react better to this than she did the previous time you’ve brought bad news. Her shoulders sag, as if every planet in the Empire was on her shoulders. It’s an odd sight to see on such a young person. She’s growing up sooner than she should.

“Any news now couldn’t be much worse.” You decide to get this over with, but still pad it a little.

“The SIIN was decimated during the sacking of the capital. I have reason to believe that our leader, and your father’s friend and ally, is dead. He’s left a power vacuum, that even national security agencies wouldn’t hesitate to seize. I also have reason to believe that not every national governor, even on Earth, isn’t completely loyal.” She stares out into the void of space, and her gaze hardens. She lets out a long sigh.

“I-I don’t know what to do anymore. I did all I could to fix our relations with the Outer Colonies, and things still haven’t gotten much better. I-I can’t...” She slumps against a wall, and glances back at you.

“You’re a SIIN agent, what would you do?” You have to think, you fight the urge to volunteer as Director, instead you list a few names of handlers you know to be undying loyal to the Empire. She still seems to have quite a bit on her mind.

You wonder what you could do to help the Empress recover from her depression. An idea crosses your mind. Muffins. You have no idea why, but it makes sense once you think about it. Food always makes people feel better. Muffins are simple enough to not screw up too badly, and you decide to throw a few chocolate chips in as well. You head to the kitchen to put the plan into motion.

You’re really no chef, but you’d have to admit that the muffins turned out much better than expected. You bring the muffins to the Empress’s quarters. You take the opportunity to give the her a few words of encouragement.

“It’s alright to be confused, I’m sure your father had trouble during his rule, also. You just have to learn from the past, and prevent it from repeating itself”. The leave the muffins on her nightstand, and ruffle her hair the way you usually do, she giggles.

We need to come up with new location to house and protect the Empress, It will show Empire strong, Rebels weak. Hopefully that will cause some rebels to leave. Also we should work on capturing some of the rebels now, interrogating them for the information like where they were recruited from, why did they join blah blah blah all that shit.

Our main and ultimate focus is not killing the rebel leaders, Its ensuring no rebels rise up after their leaders die.(if the cause is the leaders then we kill them I guess)

“"If we're going to get anywhere with negotiations, you'll refer to me as Doctor Dunn. Not kiddo. I didn't go to medical school to -not- be referred to by my title, asswipe." Before shutting his transmission down. Another message arrives, and Watchmaker materializes.

“We’ve got a defector, I need you in the brig, now” A defector? How strange, rebels were usually more dedicated to their causes to even consider defecting to the Empire. You make your way down to the ship’s brig. Watchmaker is guarding a man who seems to be heavily augmented. A quick scan reveals those to be SIIN quality augs, but nothing like you’ve ever seen before. Without any sort of hardsuit, those augs could easily match your Model 108. That can only mean one thing. No. Impossible. He’s a GEN1, SIIN’s infamous child soldier program, about fifteen years ago.

“The name’s Rhee Jaehoon. Ex-SIIN agent, currently, assassin”

That smug asshole? Shoot him!
On a more serious note: ask him why he decided to defect.

That mother fucker. You know, I actually beat that fucker, by all rights. I reduced him as far as his health would go down. It was impossible to actually beat him though. It was all a ruse by bioware.

Anyway, I'm with >>22626668

Ask where he got his augs too.

Writing warmly~

There’s always the possibility that his augs are illicit. Unlikely, but still possible. You thought that
most GEN1 were mentally unstable, ranging from mild schizophrenia, to outright psychopathy.

“Those augs are some pretty serious hardware. Where did you get them?”

“Ohoho. Maybe SIIN agents aren’t as well informed as they were. Good ol’ SIIN gave them to me.” Watchmaker seems to be crosschecking what he’s saying.

“Why did you defect? Aren’t rebels loyal to the death to their causes?”

“Correction: I’m not a rebel. I’m an assassin. Another GEN1 said there was some sweet cash, and cool tech with these group of rebels. I think you made of heard of him. A certain Joshua James?” Things click, that at least explains James’s insanity during recent events

"Sure, I know the guy. Isn't very good at accomplishing his missions though."
>>
>>22627373

"and was there?"
"do you know anything about the rebels motives or goals?"
also ask him if our targets are working for or against the rebels. last thing we want to do is kill potential allies against the rebels...

"So Rhee, can I call you Rhee? I'm calling you Rhee. What made you want to offer to join up with the empire? As you can probably guess we're not the biggest fans of Assassins right at the moment.
>>
>>22627470

He doesn't want to join the empires side, he wants to live to see a paycheck. Our defense of the palace showed many rebels that this cause is for naught. We now know that some of the rebels are gen 1 sin agents that most likely blame the empire for whatever suffering they have been through.

"Sure, I know the guy. The Fuckup of SIIN. Isn't very good at accomplishing his missions though." Rhee bursts into boisterous laughter as you call James a fuckup.

An assassin, huh? That can't be good, maybe he's using this "defector" personage as a ruse, to throw you off his trail.

"Why did you defect? The Empire doesn't pay as well as it used to." Rhee morphs from laughter, to deadly graveness

"The tech that James was implanting into people obviously isn't human. It did thing to people, y'know? It made them...different, stranger, almost as if they weren't there. I got the augs that didn't screw with the mind, and then legged it the fuck outta there"

"Apparently, humans have a potential for something, what it is I have no idea what, but it's damn cool. They exposed people to boson acceleration radiation, and those that didn't die, or mutate, got these abilities." Rhee takes his gauntlet off, and conjures a blue ball of energy in his palm.

Lets get him to elaborate on this topic.
>>
>>22630171
Interesting. I trust you understand that we have to worry about things like subconscious triggers and and various other nasty things you may not know you have. I presume you want to trade your information for something?
>>
>>22630171

so maybe the attack on the empress was just a front to distract us, his real goal was the destruction of the Indomitable. With everyone so focused on the Empress's safety nobody is paying attention to the new reactor plant made of that boson crap. Or maybe he still hates the Empress and thought that spreading radiation across the planet was a good idea(fits his track record)

If you help us stop this rebellion I'll ask the Empress to grant full pardons for all Rebels that stand down from the fruitless little war. Reason being that if the augs aren't human made, we need to be unified.

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to call it for tonight. I need to do shit tomorrow.

New thread on Friday.
