In terms of "robot"? The weighing of rational and logic against any trace of emotions, sentimentality, or personal bias. Even a human-like or nearly human robot should have the advantage of never making "stupid" decisions.

In terms of "robot girl"? Fetishes. You can try doing both, but the fetish thing will only really serve to come across as facetious. It doesn't really have to "ruin" the exploration of the robot aspect of the character, but it's highly prone to and even if it doesn't it'll probably put the serious and more interesting aspects in the back seat.

Ignoring the first law of robotics is a good first step.
Whether you apply the others is a matter of taste.
Also a kind of personality, if artificial, would be a good idea.
Since excessively girly robots are a bit overdone for my tastes and will be all kinds of annoying, I would advise to not go that way for personality.

We're talking about something capable of functioning autonomously though, so by all rights it can "think." As a robot however, it cannot think randomly, or arbitrarily, or idly: it is programmed to prioritize data processing by some algorithm or another, if it weren't it'd just crash and then it wouldn't be a thinking or functioning anything. It has a program and executes that program without logical error. The only problems should come from hardware or data input limitations/errors. Unless we're in one of those weird situations where a prototype with some massive flaw was never "decommissioned" in any of various ways and is now running amok based on some faulty programming, but even in that case the patterns of behavior should be consistent with itself.

Existential bullshit is actually the best way to miss the point or simply make it boring and tasteless: not only is it really hard to pull off without sounding excessively pretentious and irrelevant, it's also unrelated to the "girly" part of the character and even tends to negate it. A good example would be Motoko Kusanagi: the more existentialist she gets, the less characterful she becomes, up until the point where she's only there to deliver pseudo-philosophical lines and basically serve as Shirow's sockpuppet.

>>
>>22702693
See that's what people normally think, but I feel like that misses the point. A programmed machine mind would never contemplate or at least never "voice" any such questions. A machine would just arrive to the bottom line conclusion and work based off that. It wouldn't ask "why was I made?" it would either say "I know, for fact, that I was made for XYZ reason" or "I do not know" and that'd more or less be the end of it. Judging the relevance of that information would also be done in very concrete positive or negative confirmation. All thought would function like a check list of known and unknowns and equations based on the known as far as those functions can be completed. Motives for a robot would be entirely based around confirming fact where unknown variables are involved and ultimately completing the big equation around whatever goal you've set for it, that being whatever the robot was programmed/made for.

The biggest play around sentience in a machine is how the machine evaluates its own self preservation, if it has been programmed with any, against the inevitable completion of its purpose and endless "nothing" that follows it completing that purpose. A crude example is a war machine designed to kill "winning" the war it was made to fight. The problem is, then what? Either the robot gets to that point and seeks to create its own war to fight, or more likely realizes the inevitable outcome of its programming putting into an endless limbo-like "waiting for input" mode and so preemptively seeks to never let the war end. Those kinds of conflicts of prioritization. Think HAL 9000.
>>
>>22702877
Nah, Ghost in the Shell is a big worldbuilding experiment that serves as a way for Shirow to give his philosophical and technical views on a lot of stuff, and to draw girl butts. As a result, characterization is a pretty secondary concern for him, to the point that his protagonist becomes less of a character and more of a mouthpiece as his actual goals supplant the whole storytelling thing. It's not a meaningful character development, it's just a side-effect of Shirow's brainwankery.

>>
>>22702936
>A programmed machine mind would never
See, that's where YOU miss the point. You've totally closed off your mind to the possibilities surrounding something that finally becomes more like a human than a machine.

When you get to a certain point of awareness, I'd like to think an artificial mind would want to tackle the implications of its own existence. Just like any biological human, an artificial mind would take its own history and build a worldview based on that, coming to a unique and individual conclusion. As it lives a while longer, and gains more experience it might have to re-negotiate that conclusion.
>>
You know what? I'd really like to play a kind of pretentious, angsty cybergoth robot girl that thinks she's the only one to have problems and constantly gets reminded that she has no reason to feel melancholic and special and shit.

Yeah, I know, a mary sue, but ironically.
>>
>>22703242
And you're missing the point of making it a machine, an automaton. When confronted with a choice requiring free will, making it react like a human would make it less unique, less interesting to play.
>>
>>22703250

That would be pretty funny.

"You meatbags just don't understand! How do I know I have free will when I can inspect the code myself! 1001001001111010110001111010110 does not compute!"

"I can't trust that my sensors provide accurate information about the world - you wouldn't get it, because you don't have any kind of internal analysis system."
>>
>>22703250
So, a robotic teenager who's vocal about the existential questions she just stumbled over, thinkig herself unique because she has no idea this has been done a thousand times in fiction and this is a point they all eventually reach?
Like a kind of robo-puberty?

>>
>>22703324

>>
>>22703282
>implying that playing a speak-and-spell would be interesting
I guess I don't find your concept of "interesting" very interesting.
>>
>>22703242
Okay, granted you ~could~ play it as a perfect human-machine at the pinnacle of technological sophistication, but that raises a number of issue including the fact that it defeats the purpose of it being a robot from a narrative perspective in the first place. At that point you're just playing a superhuman. Assuming you want the character being a robot to have some kind of actual effect on the character, then you'd be obligated to play it as a kind of "imperfect" design. The root problem in that however is that you're for some reason assuming that "perfection" is in fact the replication of human sentience. It's not. Even if it were capable of human-like thoughts of self awareness, it wouldn't prioritize that line of thought the way we do, unless for some bizarre reason it was programmed to do so specifically or was somehow very specifically flawed in a way that made it do so. You're still ignore the fundamental concept that it is a machine.

I think we did it, guys. Through our vaguely on-topic rants, I think we actually did create OP's genuinely interesting, and legitimately robotic robot girl.
>>
>>22702991

On the plus side, that's what made Stand Alone Complex so good. You take a colossal worldbuilding experiment done with such thought and care that its most significant futurist claims are actually getting closer to reality with time, not less, then add a well-staffed writing team with a clear idea of what they want to accomplish, and a pretty good director, and you get the best of all options. Even though sometimes it gets a little generic, and every dozen episodes they have a few minutes egregious philosowank, you also get fantastic stuff like the creepy-ass stalker who wants to be Paz. Not because that's interesting, but because if you look closely at the injuries suffered, the survivor is the copy - and then it is only casually mentioned again. It's one thing to make such a point about how when people are cybernetic bodies and augmented brains there could be a point where someone can be copied wholesale, but it takes some serious writing balls to make such a big point and then leave it alone for the audience to figure out on their own. Usually a day or two later in bed, about to go to sleep.

One who has a strange world view because she is also used to running as a spaceship. She doesn't really understand modesty because mechanics and routine inspections are the norm for her.

She does however tend to enjoy flaunting what she has since not only does that mean she's got new toys, but she is now upgraded, and in the high tech future, more up to date and most importantly, not obsolete.

After every new upgrade you can usually catch her trying to get used to it, running tests quickly when she thinks no one is paying attention. She says that she's "so advanced and resourceful that things come naturally to her, she can integrate effortlessly with the latest technology no matter what."

She is scared of becoming useless and obsolete, just another old thing overwhelmed by faster, smarter, more capable things, and thus tends to hide any problems she has, trying to fix them behind everyone's back to keep up the facade that she's always fixed up and running perfectly.

You're a good machine, a powerful machine, you need to keep at the top of your game if you want to stay in service.

That's neither girly nor typical of machines. AND it's a poor attempt at being tragic (rather than dramatic, that's about plot twists) since it could be said of approximately anyone to various degrees.
>>
>>22704800
That would depend on the price of a new model.
Planes and tanks stay in service for a long time, even if they are outdated. Simply because a new one would be too expensive.
>>
>>22704800
Would a machine even have the self esteem problems or personal doubts to produce a need to overcompensate? Wouldn't a machine be perfectly aware of its capabilities and where those stand against the expectations of it? It would never doubt, it would just know.
>>
>>22704800
Oh, I think I get it, you're trying to make her sound like Asuka, right?
>>
>>22704866
I assume it's meant to be analogous to how girls stereotypically feel the need to be attractive and loved by everyone. But playing it tragically is pretty damn clumsy, since it's usually a rather comical thing, when it's exploited.
>>
>>22704846
Also because people aren't encouraged to just produce newer and better models constantly. If they did they'd over-saturate their own already tiny market. They can't just sell billions of dollars worth of incrementally better planes to the same 2 or 3 clients at the rate of one new model a year. It's better to just keep up production on a continuing line of prototypes and wait for the demand to prompt putting whatever recent prototype has been developed into mass production.

...In fact that'd make for an interesting excuse for unique character building in a setting with robot characters. Every prototype robot exists as a one-of-a-kind simply because it was never truly intended for mass production, just an excuse to keep its creators employed and in practice. So to start the entire game there's a whole warehouse of prototypes doomed to sit and gather dust.
>>
>>22704866

As a character constructed and played by a human it will have a personality after 3-6 games, whether you like it or not.

It could be played subtly, too. The normally emotionless android acknowledges the fact that it will be replaced the moment it is no longer useful, so it constantly runs maintenance and upgrades on itself, expecting humans to be as cold and analytical about it as she is and basically expecting them to throw her away the moment she so much as stumbles.

They would not like it one bit. Futa fetish is about the more direct psychological access to the action, a far more visual and relatable orgasm to a male.
Also it takes out the male component from the equiation. Many people have a problem with fapping to porn when there is a huge muscular porn actor swinging his ass into the camera.
Being confronted with one in real life would be much more than you could handle immediately.
I certainly know that I would have one hell of a problem with finding a chick to have a dick outside a setting where putting extra genitalia on people was something commonplace.

Having a robot present you with a number of dicks to chose from with no room for negotiation is a bit like being asked to pick up the soap.

I like the idea of most robots being cold, rational and inhuman. But combat drones have to be able to predict the actions of human enemies so they have to learn how to think like humans, predicting and understanding emotional influences on descision making, reasoning through imperfect information scenarios with humanlike intuition, understanding complex verbal and gestural shorthand etc...

So combat drones can think, feel and act human, but underneath all that the only reason they bother is to make it easier for them to hunt down and kill humans.

Inspired by the archived thread linked here somewhere, I want to get into Free Will before I answer OP's question in a serious manner.

Assuming the universe is not fundamentally based on probabilistic laws of physics, and that is a big but logical assumption, all particles react to eachother in predictable ways on the smallest of levels. Therefore, if one goes into sufficient detail, the universe as a whole can be represented by a set of strict rules, programming or code if you will. I don't think it takes a genius to realise human brains are built of these same particles the rest of the universe is made of as well, and therefore they too are entirely predictable and representable by sufficiently detailed written code and as such, Free Will does not exist. It's just an illusion resulting from how excessively more complicated the universe is than we could possibly understand with our human brains in real time. (Sidenote: this implies we could be living in a huge simulation in the first place, think The Matrix)

Now let's assume for a second that we have a sentient robot, capable of learning and otherwise affecting its own programming.
I will ask you this paired question: What makes us any more real than this robot? What makes this robot any more artificial than us?
Is it that we evolved naturally? But then, if there is no free will, arent we just a method devised by nature to build robot and are robots therefore natural? They are made from resources from this planet/universe just like we are, after all. To call something artificial you need to draw lines and make careful definitions.

What then makes a robot (of any sort) interesting as a character is how he/she/it, aware of the aforementioned, deals with a society in which most people fail to realise these... well, I wouldn't want to call them facts due to the assumption, but... implications of modern universal theory. More about that in next post.
>>
Not only gives this room for internal character development, it gives opportunity for every other character around the robot to develop. They can take stances on the subject, differ in opinion. This can influence relationships between those people as well. Think about the infamous otakus who marry a realdoll. Let's upgrade that doll with a healthy dose of sentience. I suspect a majority, especially in early stages, would look down upon such a bonding because of the alleged artificiality of said sentient doll/robot. But then, I ask again, what makes us any more real? The single robot would not just build her own character this way, or even of those around it, but would build an entire universe in the storytelling sense of the word. There would be Robot rights movements, governments are now facing the prospect of having to change laws to account for "artificial" intelligence.

What makes a robot GIRL in specific interesting is when you try to make a realistic assessment of how a GIRL would deal with this knowledge and the ways people think of her or the people she associates with. Don't confuse that with a human girl though. You should probably look at this from what a ROBOT GIRL would be PROGRAMMED to act like by a HUMAN MALE, because face it, which half of the world's population would be most interested in robot girls? That programming would be based on ideals rather than realism. Imagine a mix of desirable female behavior, machine-like logic and the personal development of the robot character as she learns about the world through a body with vastly different limitations and capabilities to that of a human female. This results in differences of "normal" behavior between the human and robot. For example, a robot would be much less averse to sustaining damage, provided the cost of repair was worth the result of its actions, as pain is something simulated at most (and can therefore be turned off) or just plain non-existent.
>>
>>22711763
Do elaborate.

It is known not to be.

>and that is a big but logical assumption
How is that logical?

>therefore they too are entirely predictable and representable by sufficiently detailed written code and as such, Free Will does not exist
How are you defining free will?

>It's just an illusion resulting from how excessively more complicated the universe is than we could possibly understand with our human brains in real time
How do you come to that conclusion? What's what the human brain is or isn't capable of understanding got to do with anything?

>Sidenote: this implies we could be living in a huge simulation in the first place, think The Matrix
How does it imply that? Couldn't we be anyway?

>implications of modern universal theory
What is "modern universal theory"?

Then again, babbys are made too. Two people come together and get the project started, usually intentionally, and then decide whether or not to terminate it. Then they have to spend plenty of resources to upkeep the babby. And especially in the old days having babies wasn't about "oh, honey, lets make pretty babbies" and more about having workers for the farm, someone to carry the family name, etc. The order in which they were born also had social meaning. First son gets to inherit, second goes to the army, third to the Church, etc. Girls can be used to tie contracts.

Why couldn't sapient machines have similar rights to children? Up to a certain "age" they are in the custody of their maker, who in turn has the obligation to care for the machine. After this age the machine is free of all ties. If you don't want all that, don't make a sapient machine.
>>
>>22715572

Babies are produced in a biological production facility while robots are produced in a mechanical production facility.
If they develop a consciousness, there are hardly intangible points to be made for denying them to be accepted as persons.

OP, There are two (well, three I guess) ways of doing an AI/robot
There is the "Tries to be human" AI that a lot of writers go for, because if done right themes of loneliness and isolation can be really interesting to read. EX: Blade Runner, Data, AI: Artificial Intelligence

There's the "Human acting like an emo fuck" AI, which is basically just the above, but the writer forgot to actually make their AI inhuman, so they just went with the I'M SAD route. I suppose Cortana could be a well-done example of this, because there are reasons for her to be both sad and act like a human.

And then there's my personal favorite, the "exults in its inhumanity"-type AIs. These guys are just awesome because the writer gets a lot more leeway with how the character would think and act, resulting in some of the most unique and memorable AIs in fiction. Of course, this also gives the writer more than enough rope to hang themselves with if the character is written poorly, so oftentimes this is avoided. Examples would include GLaDOS, SHODAN, and my personal favorite, MOTHERFUCKING BOLOS.

Robot believes that if it can accumulate enough data it can find God.

Afro Samurai is the opposite, though. Its about a man so driven to accomplish his goals that he slowly becomes a single minded machine whereas self-aware AIs are usually all about trying to expand their newfound consciousness.

I actually had a neat idea for a story about a man who went full cyberbody cyborg who has become jaded and misanthropic and wants nothing more to do with humanity and a newly awakened self-aware robot girl who desperately wants to be seen as more than just an advanced chatbot and constantly wonders if that is all she is. Over the course of the story, he would become more and more machinelike and she would become more and more humanlike.

>They tend to do that. /sarcasm

Meh. Some confirmation bias, maybe. Some of the stuff futurists say is so way-out-there wrong that ten years later we realize it's a century off instead of a decade off, or even will outright never happen. A lot of other stuff falls victim to extreme underestimation of complexity - a lot of the robot/AI/brain/nuclearfusion stuff turned out like that, and has been in an "N years away" rut for 2N years.

Also some futurists try to slip in a retcon and take credit for predicting something that's happening but that they never really predicted, or that they 'predicted' after it was already happening. Heh.

Why is it always the Major? No one ever mentions Rico.

she's not sexy
she's not cute
she's not philosophical and DEEP
she's not visibly mechanical
she's from an obscure and unspectacular anime

But Rico is a girl that was made into a robot that was made to behave like a boy.

When she digs into a man's memory of his dead wife and uses her image as a template to create her own physical body, and her attempts to understand and empathize with him help her own development into something more than a mere machine.

(Seriously, does no one watch this show?)

Thats also roughly the plot for the Disney Channel Original Movie ''Smart House''.

Hmm, the relationship moves way too fucking fast. Also, thugs out of nowhere? What the fuck.

The girl seems a lot more sensible than the guy. I did like how you obscured the fact that she's a robot, even though you spoiled it in your post.

Don't bother with robot girl. Just do intelligent, self-interested robot. Something like Star Wars expanded universe IG88.

In GURPS I once played a gynoid character who had been abandoned in the closed facility network where she was created (it was a post-apoc setting, everyone was dead and/or fled the area) for literal centuries, an AI based around social interaction with no one to talk to.

Once she was finally let out by the other PCs and given a robot body to use, she became obsessed with retaining social interaction as long as possible. She was more or less insane with loneliness, so clung to the group she'd found herself with avidly, and violently opposed anyone who was a potential threat to them.

Naturally, I'd given her the Berzerk disadvantage, so she'd disengage her safeties whenever there was the possibility that her or her friends might be damaged.

The campaign never got far enough for me to really explore this, but the eventual conclusion probably would have had her trying to upload the party's brains into a computer and then merging with them, continued with every other being she ever meets, so that she'd never be lonely again.

TL;DR yandere android girl wat do

Can she be a boy that was made into a girl that was made to behave like a boy?

This fucking awful movie West World introduced me to the concept of having a computer write code, letting it just run to figure out all the faults, and let the AI mutate and evolve, meaning that in the end the actual programmers didn't really understand the code any more.
That means the AI will have come into existence on its own, with no 'creator'.
That means it's okay if the AI becomes perverted, and installs sexual receptors on itself, because it means it's the AI's own perversion, not that of its creator.

Hey Brenner was fucking GREAT in West World.

Way too fucking long though, explored the same concept three times.
