In the early hours of the morning, before the sun had risen above the low alpine mountains, your village came under attack. As the fire and smoke from burning homes and bodies began to fill your lungs and sting your eyes, you made a mad dash from your house and into the forest, grabbing your uncles old story book on your way out, though the reason for this action escapes you. You traveled the whole night through, running until you found shelter. In the darkness it seemed a hulking lump of stone, just another ruin dotting the landscape of the North Coast. You make your way past wrought iron gates, push aside a heavy oaken door and collapse onto cold stone.

When you awaken, the first thing you are aware of is the sound of the ocean. Pushing yourself onto unsteady legs, you take in your surroundings. You are in the middle of a large octagonal room with intricately patterned marble flooring. To your right is an alcove with a spiral staircase that looks as if it leads up, to your left another staircase leading down. Directly in front of you is a large glass window, reaching all the way up to the vaulted ceiling. Out the window you can see the endless expanse of the North Sea, stretching to the western horizon. Behind you is the heavy oaken door you shoved open last night. You wobble over to the door and step outside into the bright midday sun.
>>
>>22743481
Outside, you find the ruins of a courtyard with stables on your right, and a smithy to your left. Across from you at the other end of the courtyard is a large iron gate that has been smashed and twisted out of shape. In the distance you spot a pillar of black smoke rising from behind a mountain ridge. Turning back around you take in the full scale of your shelter. A large tower, at least six stories high, with many windows and balconies. Though from the outside it looks like it could fall down at any moment, the inside seemed in pristine condition.

As the day grinds on, the gnawing pain of hunger begins to take you and you head back inside. Searching for food is fruitless, as the door at the top of the stairs on your right is locked, and the stairs to your left fair no better. Your uncle's story book is laying in the middle of the marble floor. As the sun sinks below the horizon, the pain in your stomach becomes almost unbearable. Perhaps reading a story might take your mind from the hunger?

You crack open the old leather tome. The stiff yellowed pages turn beneath your hand until you find a story that was your favorite when you were younger. It is the story of a tribe living next to a river. In the story, a man must hunt the wolf god that has terrorized them all winter long. You know the story so well that you almost don't register it when you come across a line that wasn't there before. It is written in a strange language, words that almost sound natural in your mind. Whispering them aloud makes them seem clearer, but the quietness of your voice leaves the room feeling empty. Without a second thought, you shout the words with all the force your parched throat can muster. A deafening crack splits the air and...

A large loaf of bread appears before you!

>Welcome to Mage Quest, the thread where you will (probably) become an all powerful Mage! You have no ceiling in terms of potential, but the path to power is often riddled with dangers. I hope we all manage to have a good time in the first thread of what I hope to be a long running series.

You sit in shock for a moment, staring at the bread before you. It looks safe enough. It sure does smell like normal bread. Reaching out to touch it, it even feels nice and warm, as if it had just left the oven. Your hunger gets the best of you and you tear in to it, devouring the whole loaf in a matter of minutes. You no longer feel hungry or thirsty, the magic bread having satisfied those needs. It might not be the best tasting thing around, but you cannot deny that it is filling.

After the bread has been fully consumed, you register that you just cast a spell. That must have been what it was, how else could you make bread appear from thin air? But only a Mage can cast a spell, and surely you are no Mage. Those are men of great power, kings and queens, heroes who slay dragons and hold court with gods. You aren't anything too special, are you?

>Please decide on your character now. Name and Gender are the only important things here, but fluff text and background story will not be ignored. Keep in mind that you are human and grew up in a rather isolated mountain town.

>So you have asked, so it shall be

No, nothing too special. Just Richard, a young boy prone to laziness and daydreaming. But you cannot deny that you just created food where no food had been before. An act of magic, as even your simple peasant brain can understand. You open the old leather Story Book again, flipping to a story about a Mage who made a deal with the sun in order to tame a raging snowstorm, another favorite of yours as a child. You quickly skip to the passage that speaks about the power of the Mage...

"...For the Mage is a powerful man, shaped of earth and sky and flame and wave, and all things beyond and within these things. Theirs is the soul of Broken Gods, a spring of power in an unbound mortal coil."

Hmm, that's funny. The Story Book doesn't mention anywhere about a Mage reading their power from any sort of tome. Guess that makes you special then, right? Anyways, it's getting late and you decide that sleep is probably a good idea right about now. You place your book on the ground as a pillow, lay down your head, curl up in the darkness and drift off to sleep....

"Shackles? What shackles? What the hell are you? Where am I?"
Your frantic words come out mulled and thick, as if your tongue was much heavier than it actually is. Strange, seeing as how you feel fine.

The beast howls, in laughter or rage you cannot tell. It swings its hideous head around, as if searching the dreamscape for something. "Where am I? I am here, and thou art there. Together, we are home. Certainly not my home or your home, but someones home nonetheless."
"What I am is neither here nor their, thy kindred has many names for us. Know that I am here to guide thee, regardless of feelings towards the situation."
"As to thy shackles, they will come off in time. Every Magi is destined for a greater form, and thou art no exception."

The beast grins a wicked grin. "Thou art in possession of mine property, as was stolen from my by thy bloodkin. Tis a story book that I live within. I do not ask for its return, only that its power be earned. To such ends, I shall gift thee a bit of mine knowledge on the workings of reality. Simply ask a question and thou shalt receive."

The beast dips into a low sweeping bow, his ebony horns scraping the floor.

"Simply put, I live in your Story Book. If thou have need of knowledge, I shall provide thee information from mine own mental storage. To know the workings of reality, ask thy question and an answer, receive."

"When thou break thy shackles and find thine key, thou discarded shell shall be rendered unto me."
The Beast's grin is literally filling his entire face at this point. He slithers forward on a massive serpentine body. His voice suddenly shifts, now sounding more like a raspy human. His face contorts weirdly as his mouth begins to devour his body, turning the whole thing inside out before disappearing completely.

You wake up in a cold sweat, the book is laying on the floor in front of you. The pages, normally colored bright and marked by passages of storied legend, all appear to be blank. Flipping it open, you see a black and white ink drawing of the Beast, as well as another picture of a man with a great spear. In text beneath the pictures it says...

"Listen not to the words of the gods, for they never lie and offer only the truth. Ask only the pages to gain knowledge."

Fucking weird ass bullshit, can non of these magic fuckers speak in something other than circles? Regardless, the sun is up and you are feeling fine. It's a warm and sunny day on the North Coast. Perhaps you can explore around some?

The sun is bright, but there are important things to be done inside, the first of which is learning more about your new home. You decide to try heading upstairs first. The lock on the door is hard to break but very old, and eventually you manage to shove the door in. The room before you seems to have been a library at some point, with shelves reaching up at least two floors. On the other side of the room you a small ladder sprouts upwards towards a floor hatch. Unfortunately for you, however, all of the books appear to be missing. Nothing to great you here but dusty shelves.

>Up. That's where the good stuff is. Everyone knows that.
Hehe, of course it is.

Ascending the ladder at the far end of the room, you pass through the (surprisingly) unlocked trap door and emerge in a nice, naturally lit living space. There is a table and chairs, large windows on both the eastern and western walls, a cooking pot and various cabinets filled with rotten fruit and vegetables. An impressive assortment of spoons are arranged in peculiar patterns on the table in the middle of the room. Wooden spoons, pewter spoons, some made of silver and one you even think may be made of gold. A collection of spoons the likes of which you have never seen!

Upon closer inspection of the chairs, however, your stomach begins to churn. Each armrest is crowed with a skull. A human skull to be sure, but much too small to be from an adult. Teeth crown the back of the chair, and leg bones make up the legs. The red velvet padding seems nice enough, however.

Across the room is another staircase

You take the stairs up, glad to be rid of the strange chairs and spoons.

The top floor of the tower is impressive beyond words. You have only heard of this kind of place in the stories your grandfather used to tell of the big city. All the wall are made of glass. The ceiling is made of glass. It gently slopes inwards to form a perfect glass dome over your head, with eight support struts barely obstructing the view you have of the world around you. There is a bed on this level, and a strange contraption mounted on the ceiling, attached to rails that slid over the support beams. Closer inspection of the device reveals it to be a sort of telescope that can be maneuvered around the dome at your leisure. Looking outside, you can see for miles around you in every direction. Not much to see, frankly, except for a road to the south, running parallel to the coast. About three hundred paces from the gate of the tower, near the edge of the pine forest, you spot movement. A large man steps out of the shadows, visible even at this distance and height. He carries a massive sword across his back, and is wearing heavy padded chain and leather armor. He appears to be making his way towards the tower.

>Well then, Mr. High Roller

The sudden appearance of an armed stranger sets of an alarm in the back of your head. You pick up the Story Book and stare at it, not exactly sure how to proceed. Fortunately, the words "Ask and you shall receive" appear after only a second or two. Your voice echoes in the glass dome, "I need a summoning spell, like the Magi in the stories used."

The pages on the book flutter and turn in a rapid pace, filling with intricate symbols for summoning circles and strange glyphs and wards. Finally, it comes to a stop with one page having a large ink picture of a black Wolf, and a single word, "Itnurh" etched out on the opposing page. No other information is given.

The man with the sword is now at the broken gate. He is shouting something, but you can hardly make out what it is. It seems as if he is asking if anyone is home.

You remain at the top of the tower while the man makes his way through the courtyard. The heavy oak door, which you neglected to bar shut before venturing upstairs, will hardly prove an obstacle. As he enters the tower, you decide to creep downstairs to get a better look at him.

Once you reach the stairwell leading down to the main room, you are able to hear him grumbling about a lack of food. He walks over to the downwards spiraling staircase and disappears from sight. Moments later you hear the splintering of a great deal of wood, and you can only assume that the door to the basement has just been busted through by the impressively large sword the man was carrying.
