So I'm putting together a campaign running this: http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Pokemon_Tabletop_Adventures

It will be set, as the subject suggests, in Australia through the lens of the pokemon universe.

Obviously, this is going to be a lethal fucking place to be, with poison types everywhere just being the start. But I want to have a custom region dex put together before hand, so I turn to you, /tg/, to help me.

What 'mons do you think fit Australia? Spinarak, voltik and their evolutions are MANDATORY, obviously. And another thing: Any pokemon, gen 1 ~ 5, but don't bother with legendaries. Assume the full evolution family will be present. And no fakemon, for that is the path to madness.

I also need some pointers on how to translate the political and legal aspects of the area into a world full of brightly colored cockfighting creatures.

Maybe /v/ or /int/ or whatever other fucking board could help, but fuck that noise. /tg/ knows how to get this shit done, so it's /tg/ I want to help me.

Spinarak. Which are mandatory. Yeah, the place is KNOWN for deadly as fuck spiders, like I'm gonna leave those things out.

Eevee? I dunno about having eevee show up in the wild. It's like some scientist's pet project for gene manipulation. I don't think it would survive the wild for long, given the sort of things it has to contend with.

Also, geodudes and zubats: Thoughts? Those things are -everywhere-. Don't they even show up in where-ever-the-fuck in Gen 5 after you beat the E4 or something?

Eevee because it's weird as hell and could be some kind of 'fuck me' introduced to the wildlife. Like cane toads, only they adapt to any environment ever and are routinely culled because they breed like rabbits on FATAL.

Another issue is knowing where to PUT all these things. Grass types spread across the north, ice to the south east, those are easy. Others... not so easy.

>>22932489
Not -all- of them, good god man. My initial draft of this list, before coming to /tg/ for advice, was like 1/3 poison, 1/3 water, 1/3 EVERYTHING ELSE.

I'm not sure whether Antidotes should be cheaper or more expensive. Everywhere should stock a shitload of them, but there's bound to be massive demand.

Yeeeah, no. I checked it out. Half the threads are stupid crap. REALLY stupid. "Are these people high right now" stupid.

My faith, what little there is, remains with /tg/.

The main issue is really distribution. I checked over wikipedia and did google searches on various australian animals and where their habitats are, but that was a lot of reading with very little usable information.

I'm about to throw up my hands and say "Fuck all environmental facts, I'm putting a forest next to a desert!" I'm neither a geologist or a meteorologist, so it's a lot of effort for nothing. I still want to make at least a token effort to keep things plausible, though. (None of that "lava slug hotter than the sun" nonsense, either.)
>>
>>22932634
Well, I'm only an armchair geologist, but I live in Australia, so there's that. In New South Wales, it basically goes coast->forests and shit->ENJOY YOUR MOUNTAINS AND SNOW AND SHIT->it'sfuckingsand.jpg.
>>
>>22932634
It'll depend a lot on your group, of course, but I'd actually recommend not worrying about things all that much. Pokemon, don't gotta explain shit, etc., and restricting some things may make it hard for people who only want a team of their favorites/need pokemon with certain moves to qualify for class abilities.

>Pokemon, don't gotta explain shit
Much as I love pokemon, I also love having worlds that are consistent and logical (at least according to in-universe logic) as possible. "Oddish lives in this cave because I say so" lacks any sort of justification, breaks immersion... It's very hard to compromise between the crazy illogical shit that is Pokemon (mach 2 birds of prey, onix weighing fuck all, etc.) with my personality that tries to find reason and coherence in everything. Still, I can let some shit slide with a handwave, just not too much.

As for my players, the two I have lined up right now couldn't give half a fuck what pokemon I let them have. One just wants to explore the world I present, taking events in stride and just immersing herself, which is why I want the world to avoid breaking immersion as much as possible.

The other one is leaning heavily in favor of being a Breeder with no particular favorites she's after. She's great at number crunching, keeping track of details and usually cares more about being appreciated as part of the play group than getting exactly what she wants. From what I can tell, part of why she likes Breeder is the fact she can get much more involved in the 'mon's development than hopping on a bike and riding in circles for an hour.

Besides, if any player has a particularly pokemon they really, REALLY want, that happens to not be native... I'll let them have it as a starter. So long as it isn't over powered, obviously. Not like you can find a wild charmander in R/B/FR/LG, so an 'exotic' starter meshes just fine.
>>
>>22932755
I don't know what is hanging from that hat, but I feel it would look cooler if it was spiders.
>>
>>22932769

While that makes sense (except the snorlax, but that's just too funny for me to not want to include it), they seem logical... Though excessive.

I think I'll compile all the suggestions, compare it against my initial list and come up with something in the 200-ish pokemon range...

Hell, if I have to add more, I either say they just weren't encountered before or they're invasive species! Australia gets FUCKED by invasive species and I could make an entire quest just out of the breeder trying to keep native species populations stable because of the new species.

Ah, one last thing before I go: Gym leaders and their teams, plus appropriate locations for their gyms. 3 ~ 6 pokemon each.

I'd like to fit a Dark gym in there somewhere, since Dark probably won't get a canon gym no matter how much I want one.

Gym leaders will NOT be restricted to native 'mons.

I like that idea. I'm also thinking that I'll have wild mutations show up that are dual type Poison when they aren't supposed to be, so the party can try finding out what's causing them. That or have the local Team Morons employ Type Ace (Poison) trainers.

>>22933512
Hm. Interesting. I doubt I'll use that exact map, but it does give me some ideas. I'd probably add a boat route or charter ship to take the party around the coast, though. And I'd let them leave the routes -anyway-, though it'll likely be far more dangerous. (I'll probably treat any 'routes' as the safest path between cities.)

What's the legend on the location colors? It only has a legend for the routes.

It's going to essentially be Australia with the serial numbers filed off. Mostly the same geography and city locations, I may use -some- names (or puns off them), but it's not going to be -exactly- Australia.

I've been thinking of adding some caves in the mountains near Melbourne. Probably cold as fuck caves, so I've got more places to stick ice pokemon. (All types need representation, after all.)

Water gym being near the reef makes perfect sense, as does corsolas. Probably sharpedo, gyarados and frillish (That's the ghost jellyfish, right?) in the gym, too.

I mentioned they wanted to play a Breeder and a fuck-if-they-know-yet.

I'm not ruling out them challenging gyms, though. They say they aren't interested -now-, but once they start itching for levels and prize money they might change their minds. "Not very interested" just means they don't want to -now-.

That or I may get a third or fourth player who wants gym badges. Hell, one guy I have lined up, going by my last campaign, will probably play an Ace Trainer that is all about the battles.

I'll probably do that for several of them, yes. No changing stats or altering their appearances too much, but they'll be some sort of sub-species.

Snivy, for instance. Gen 5 took place in a temperate area, right? This snivy is a tropical version. Pretty much the same animal, just adapted somewhat for the different climate.

There might be some coloration differences or such, if I feel like going into that much detail on the differences.

Right now, though, I just want to get all the locations worked out sensibly. I'll worry about reskinning once I have more important details handled.

I'm happy with the current spread, though. I'm trying to give the party a reason to move around by having interesting and/or powerful pokemon unique to certain areas.

And I'm probably going to reflavor Tasmania as a frozen wasteland at this rate.

I think Game Freak uses the "Team Derp is the super-evil enemy" trope in every game because they are marketing the game to children. It's easy to grasp.

With a tabletop game, you can create a deeper or more mature plotline, or something that isn't so tying-woman-to-railroad-tracks evil. Perhaps the main threat is ecological, and as a result wild pokemon are moving to cities and fighting with humans.
>>
You can introduce shades of grey to a game series that is historically simple black-and white. I advise taking advantage of that.

Well duh. But my point is more "Should I have a central threat?" I can do moral greyness (virtually every campaign I have ever run, even a My Little Pony campaign) and I can do multiple antagonists that aren't bound to a central group.

Hell, the games -did- brush against moral greyness on occasion, such as Magma/Aqua theoretically having good intentions, but just being fucking morons about it.

>Let's dry up the ocean to make more land for humans! No, wait, let's not because that'll require heating up the planet, making it unlivable!
>Let's raise the ocean so pokemon have more places to live! No, wait, that'll DROWN MULTIPLE CITIES.
Well intentioned extremists and groups that started with a good cause in mind but slowly lost touch with it are actually my specialty.

Hell, one of my villains in my last campaign just wanted to create a home for orphans, but didn't trust the government to not fuck it up. (The fact that she aligns with a cult intent on toppling all civilization shows her lack of foresight at that moment.)

So. Yeah. Plot ideas? Just having "wander around until your rival/gym leader/Team Seinfeld needs a kick to the crotch" is dull as fuck and, like I mentioned, I'd like the plot to fit the locale.
>>
So does anyone here know how the politics of pokemon operates?

Cause from where i'm standing, a sort of neo-feudalism makes the most sense, with gyms being local lords and their retainers, trainers being knights, and the elite 4 serving as a ruling council with the champion beign a sort of military leader/enforcer

I always saw gyms as a local militia, there to protect their city from any threats. But they're still part of the same nation and don't have any real political power beyond prestige. "I keep you safe, will you do this for me?" sort of thing, instead of "I'm your lord, kneel!"

Ordinary trainers deal with ordinary problems, gym leaders act more as teachers and leaders, ensuring the next generation can handle any threats. The Elite Four are there in case god tier shit hits the fan. (Though they never actually show up in the games or help when they DO show up, Cynthia is such a bitch...)
>>
>>22943780

Since you're interested in moral greyness, why not have a kind of native/poacher sort of deal? Especially since Australia.

The Natives lived in harmony with the pokemon, and never "captured" them. They just lived as allies and helped each other, and pokemon were kind of god-like figures. They see capturing pokemon and using them for fighting as evil and self centered in a sort of perverse "taming of nature" way. Motivations for individuals could range from keeping outsiders from coming in all the way up to stealing pokemon and releasing them back into the wild.

Then, on the opposite side, you have the hardcore trainers/poachers. They're all about training, having come to the new land in order to find new pokemon, train the ones they have, and acquire rare species and sub types. The worst among them don't care about the natural order, and just seek personal fulfillment and getting stronger. Maybe have their leader be a sort of Indiana Jones expy with a penchant for catching extremely rare pokemon?

Then have both sides commit crimes (trainers capture ancient Torterra seen as a spiritual beast and refuse to let it go, Natives break into a pokemon center and free pokemon) as well as have helpful NPCs on both sides.

Then you can kind of have the players advance how they want choosing one side or other as enemies/allies.

That -could- work... if it wasn't Australia. Australia, where 'nature' is synonymous with 'painful death.'

The "group with a spiritual bend wanting pokemon free" versus "people who live for capturing pokemon" angle could work, but might wind up seeming like a rehash of gen V's plot. (Though I haven't -played- gen V yet... And Gen VI is on the way. Jesus.)

Though it's guaranteed that there will be events that make the PCs question whether making pokemon battle is moral or not.

As a hypothetical question... What would you expect an Aussie Legendary to look like? I'd rather not pervert the lore by making my own 'mons, but I'm still curious how the myths and such would translate into a world with pokemon.

not work with Australia? It's a land that was originally inhabited by Aboriginals, treated as a giant prison by Britain, and then advanced into a first world nation. There is a ton of history of racial strife between the Aboriginals and everybody else. Injecting Pokemon into all of this means that the Aboriginals would have natural allies, and it would make sense that poachers and reckless immigrants (like the one Brit who brought in rabbits for hunting and ended up populating the entire continent with them) would conflict with the Aboriginals.
>>
>>22944053
Here

>>22945243
Now that I think about it, you know what would be a cool twist? Colonial pokemon adventures. Instead of capturing pokemon with pokeballs, they need to be "tamed" by either whittling down their life and claiming them (if they're wild) or by offering them food and companionship.

Trainers could be gentlemanly adventurers come to explore the land, and have to contend with the naturalistic natives that live with the pokemon as free allies and the brutal poachers who beat their pokemon and break their spirits to control them.

Well, as I said, trying to portray -controlling- nature as morally gray is going to be pretty difficult when nature is the biggest threat to the group.

>There is a ton of history of racial strife between the Aboriginals and everybody else.
Tried exploring racial tensions in my last campaign. Pretty sure it unnerved some of my group.

It's doable and provides a lot of opportunities for story telling, yeah, but I gotta ease into it carefully so as not to freak anyone out.

Last campaign I tried easing into the concept of racial violence in the setting (portraying it as terrible, because it is.) One of the villains was the victim of racial prejudice and violence. When I started out, I didn't let the PCs know about the violence. They were very firmly set on "He's bad and being treated bad doesn't give him the right to do this!" Then I slowly had them discover details on just what happened to him. One of the players, out of character, went into a rant about how all the villains are crazy and horrible people that should be killed just to get it over with (to be fair, she was stressed out and her medication wasn't working), but, uh... Well, suffice to say the entire party stopped seeing him as an evil son of a bitch once they found out he was held down and had chunks of skin carved off of him. I... probably went overboard, though I intentionally avoided -describing- any of the violence, not giving any details beyond a 'just the facts' report.

So I'm hesitant to bring in racial conflict again. Though I think I could make it work if I used pokemon as the intermediary, now that I think about it: Both sides are focused on the wildlife, less so on each other. The pokemon are the focus of their views and actions, with the other side as obstacles.

Now that I think about it, having a group of natives that steal, drive out or kill invasive species and a group of poachers essentially doing the same with native species could work.

You are now imagining a wailord offering a skitty candy. (Feel free to hate me for that mental image.)

Anyway, my campaigns tend to get progressively darker as they go, as that just seems to be where my mind takes me. Last campaign started with the party saving a little girl from some rage drakes, then they had a tea party. (I shit you not.) By the end of the campaign, they were fighting a resurrected god that wanted to wipe out all civilization, having just burst in on the ritual after the god broke the spines and impaled two of their allies. (In a campaign that had been largely non-lethal.) Yeah... I may emotional problems, I dunno.

>Back onto Australia...
Maybe a new law is passed cracking down on poaching to appease the aboriginals, but this pisses off some poachers that start decimating species or something? Maybe have this spring up as breaking news a couple sessions in so the party has to decide whether to get involved or try to ignore it all?

Oh.
If your group doesn't want that kind of stuff, I'd either not have the racial conflict or, as you suggested, reframe it as something else. Colonists vs natives doesn't have to be about racism; it could be about a number of things (land, resources, ecological stability, ideological differences...).

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll rework it into more of a "PETA vs exploitation" angle, except with PETA not being full of shit heads and the exploitation being a minority of the actual trainers.

Maybe work in some the 'big business' angle where the poachers try selling the public on the benefits and how the average person can profit from it, the economy will improve, etc. I'm American, so the whole "don't fuck with shit" vs "fuck with shit but get rich" debate is something I'm intimately aware of.

So it's a matter of whether leaving things the way they are (lethal as all hell if you aren't careful, but a self correcting system that -could- keep working) or changing things (which can lead to wiping out entire species, for better or worse), or whatever third option my players go for.

My group is kind of a toss up: They can come up with amazing ideas that never occurred to me, ideas that I love to incorporate into the campaign... Or they can sit patiently until I hand feed them plot points. I'm hoping for the former, as it's much more fun that way.

Honestly, my other idea was just having them come up from the south for mating or something. I'm not a marine biologist, okay? I don't know the mating rituals of penguins or seals or anything.
>>
>>22946923
Hmm, so Tasmania, although not a winter wasteland, because of it being so close to the Antarctic, has a research station/gym there?

I do know the entire southern coast of Australia is home to the Little/Fairy Penguin.
>>
Australia is fucking ancient. There's life there that hasn't existed anywhere else for billions of years. The entire continent is a haven for living fossils.

You could probably use this to excuse including a couple of fossil pokemon as wild pokemon in pokestralia. Lileeps along the coast of Western Australia for instance or occasional bursts of Kabuto's showing up inland after massive rain
>>
Not sure if this'll help but to fluff out the dex maybe put a bunch of animalish pokemon throughout the zones that don't fit neatly within the reef=tentacool type deal.

Aus was colonised so basically the Brits just chucked all their favourite things into the wilderness. It didn't really work so there's a stark contrast between the native fauna and everything else. Many people (perhaps most) have big enough yards to keep pets too, not to mention the farming culture of the inner region.

Basically it would not be out of place to see Growlithes and Vulpixes and the various cats running around. Also, for hunting purposes, foxes and rabbits were released into the wild.

Fun fact, in Queensland it is illegal to own a rabbit.

So yeah, definitely have some 'imported' types. They'd probably be found in trainers hands than in the wild but they would definitely be in the wild. Dingos as growlithes?
>>
There should definitely be an arc where your party has to contend with hundreds of toad and frog based pokemon.

If you'll check the list of wild pokemon further up the thread, kabutos and relicanth are listed as Ocean pokemon across the region. (Okay, I think I forgot to write down relicanth, but it's there.)

I'm also thinking there will be more fossils in the region than in the games, where you usually get the choice between two revived 'mons and maybe get a different mon later. (Like Kabuto/Omanyte + aerodactyl amber.) They aren't going to be -common-, but opting to dig around for them won't be as much of a fool's errand as other regions.

Several pokemon (like houndour) are in there as 'dingos' and fill ins for other australian species.

Bunearies and nidorans are in there to fill out the rabbit infestation issue.

And I intend to have trading and owning non-native pokemon heavily monitored. Trainers -can- have non-native pokemon, but they're looking at anything from steep fines up to their license being revoked if they release potential invasive species in the region.

Which also means there's potential for black market trading on various species, smuggling them into and out of the country. This also conveniently lets me spring surprises on the group: What's a dragonair doing here? It probably escaped from a black market shipment.

Actually, some of the precolonial aboriginal shamanism is exactly like that; owing some sort of filial loyalty to the land and it's inhabitants. The vision of a mad-max inspired, barbaric and murderous no-man's land is a sensationalist meme perpetrated only on the Internet and in nationalistic, derisive cheap movies.
The focus is on the land though. Trust me, I know it because of my learnings.
As for the serpent thing, go with Rayquaza.

Make sure there are fuckloads of Mareep. Australia wasn't once known as the country riding on the sheep's back for no reason, the wool and lamb industry is massive here.
>>
>>22932556
There will be grass types all along the east as well. Lots of bushland and rain forest on the east coast of Australia. Further west, but still in the east is a moutain range that starts in south east queensland and makes its way down to the very bottom of Australia near South Australia.
>>
>>22949592
Mareep are present in the grasslands of: Western Australia, Norther Territories, and Queensland.

I am considering them common pokemon, meaning you'll trip over them about as much as rattatas.

>>22949679
The budew family are literally -everywhere-, with oddish -almost- everywhere. Tropical and sub-tropical areas are full of assorted grass types.

Also note that all I have listed are for 'normal' ranges of these pokemon, but there will be the occasional far-from-home 'mon as well.
>>
If you need a cool Team angle, why not play up the penal colony aspect? Have Team Derp be made up of the sons and daughters of former criminals and backed up by criminals with ties to other teams in other regions. Sort of a "professional muscle" team that takes in those who are from broken down teams and ex-cons.

They could be trying to take over a gem mining operation in the central region (that's still a thing in Australia right? underground housing and fuckloads of gems?) and their stance on pokemon could easily be "Nature is fucking terrifying. If you do not master it, you will fall to it."

Probably not human supremacists (they do use pokemon after all), but probably the anti-PETA. Pokemon are wild animals and tools to be used. The whole bonding thing is sort of hilariously stupid when a single pokemon can take you down with an electrical attack or burn down the goddamn house.

Maybe have them use Electric/Steel types as regulars. Manufactured pokemon are as close to a controlled weapon as they'll get. Officers of course can be from the other regions and use/dress with the trappings of their former team.

Also Unown and Natu in the Aboriginee regions. Might be cool for a gym leader idea.

Ya know, I've always wanted to run a Pokemon game (not with the d20 system, because it sucks, but still). I actually had a sort of "type distribution" chart figured out for the US.

The basic structure of the US is the same, but as far as Pokemon are concerned, it's split into five "Regions": Northeast, South, Midwest, Southwest, Northwest.

Dragon Types aren't really native; you might find a few if you search high/deep enough in the Rockies, but otherwise, they're all imported.

I figured there would just be one Gym per region, but they'd all be multi-type gyms, utilizing different combinations of their region's native pokemon.

Oh, yeah - Alaska is an honorary member of the Northwest Region, Hawaii is part of the Southwest (even though its native types are more like the South's).

Some of the more interesting ones:
>Adnoartina: A lizard guardian of Uluru. A natural legendary Poke to have in the Uluru region, maybe in a cave beneath or actually inside the giant rock.
>Djanggawul: Three siblings, two female one male, created the landscape of Australia. Nature deities and obvious candidates for a legendary trio, one was a rain goddess, one probably ground or rock for the land and one for the plants and animals, so maybe grass?
>Galeru: One of the regional names for a rainbow serpent creator god, was said to have eaten the Djanggawul. Naturally the trio leader.
>Bunyip: More treated as a cryptid these days and a more low-level spirit in the mythology of the tribes that believed in it, was said to lurk in swamps and billabongs and such and would come out and eat unwary children. A water-monster essentially.
>Tiddalik: Fairly famous in Australia even today, frog of southeast Australian legend who drank all the water in the land, and had to be made to laugh to regurgitate it.
>Wambeen: Evil dude who attacks people with lightning. Not necessarily an important god, but I think an Electric/Dark legendary would be neat.

You probably already know this, but it's pretty interesting to note that a lot of the vegetation in Australia needs regular large-scale bush fires to thrive, and that most theories attribute this to the Aboriginal practice of fire-stick farming, in which they used fire to force animals out of hiding, and often to also change the plants that lived in the area.

There's also evidence that human activity is the cause of the extinction of Australia's megafauna (fun things like a two-ton wombat and a hundred kilo echidna), either from the environmental change of the fires, or just hunting to extinction.

So the conflict is between people who have already tamed the land, and new people who want to tame it their way, rather than tamed versus harmony with the original wilderness.

Wow, you really oversimplified the United States. To start with, California is home to a lot of diverse climates. 2.5 years ago in Mammoth Lakes, CA (town close to Yosemite), I stood in natural snow at 12,000 feet. In August. We have ski resorts, a very large agricultural industry (which dwarfs Hollywood), a bunch of beautiful natural parks such as Redwood National Park and Joshua Tree (chapparel), deserts (Death Valley), temperate places (Monterey Bay)...

He over simplified everything.
The climate differences between the Sonoran Desert and Mojave Desert are huge, and anytime spent travelling through any one of those states would show the difference, not even getting into the mountain habitats.

It fits if you have the idea that you can pull a 10 hour drive between Disneyland and the Statue of liberty, but I'd recommend you start with a smaller area that you know and work on the species native to the area.

Just sticking to what I know, seasonal Cubchoo in Flagstaff, AZ should not surprise anyone, even if the state animal is probably Sandshrew or Seviper.

So for the E4, it's still a toss up between Ayers Rock and Canberra. Canberra would make it a lot easier to get to (and would likely rake in revenue due to spectators, which makes it a logical choice), but the E4 is typically out of the way and -reaching- is half the challenge.

Except this is Australia, so actually going full circle around the place without dying requires incredible luck or skill. So Canberra is in the lead between the two choices, by a little bit.

I want the gyms to be in major/capital cities, so that means Hobart, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Darwin and Perth. So that's seven, I need to know where to put the eighth.

On one hand, could put it in Canberra. Except then most of the gyms are bunched up near each other, which just won't do. Cairns seems a good fit, since it's spaced out from the others and the east coast has a high population. But that does risk leaving the west underrepresented.

Also, there won't be a set gym order. Players are welcome to skip any gym they come across and come back later. None of that "You have to beat Brock or NPCs won't let you head to Mt. Moon" BS.

I'm also sticking with Stark's suggestion of gym battles being one trainer versus the gym leader, three pokemon each, barring special exceptions.

Hobart will be the Dark-type gym, no other types are set yet, so feel free to make suggestions.
>>
>>22958605
I could also use suggestions for gym leaders, as well as types. There were suggestions earlier that I'm considering, but more opinions are always appreciated.

Anyway, my current gym notes:
Since there's no set order for the gym, the leaders will use weaker pokemon against opponents that have fewer badges. Pokemon are listed in twos or threes as: Few/no badges / Several badges / Most badges.

Hence some family lines being replaced. Teams are also chosen for good secondary type spread, both for the sake of variety and challenge.

I was going to suggest a pattern of Canberra>Sydney>Brisbane>Cairns>Darwin>Broome>Perth>Adelaide>Melbourne and from there going across the Bass Straight to an E4 in Tasmania (with only 8 badges out of the possible 9 needed) since it's a bit out of the way while not being stupidly remote, isolated and sacred like Uluru, but Hobart as Dark type gym works too.

You should include a Dark/Poison, if you want to follow the whole "at least one poison Mon in every gym". So a Skuntank or a Drapion?

Well, I don't -want- a "pattern" for the gyms. And having more than eight gyms is a bit... odd. Especially with how leveling in PTA works.

Since Cairns would make a great water gym location, I was thinking of making Broome (since as it's been pointed out, it makes a good place for a gym) would be a psuedo-gym. Not an official league gym, but comparable in challenge and still counting for a level because of it. Like the fighting dojo in Red/Blue.

And I had meant to include a Drapion, but accidentally put Spiritomb in there twice.

Some of the types may be difficult to get a poison type for, but the game does have a Type Ace that can add Poison to an existing, non-poison type pokemon.

Alright, I think I've got two more gyms worked out. Thoughts?

>>PERTH - GROUND TYPE
>Leader: ???
Trapinch / Vibrava / Flygon
Rhyhorn / Rhydon / Golurk
Numel / Camerupt / Claydol
Cubone / Marowak / Nidoking
Gligar / Gliscor / Torterra
Sandile / Krokorok / Krookadile

>>CAIRNS - WATER TYPE

Totodile / Croconaw / Feraligatr
Remoraid / Octillery / Wailord
Corsola / Tirtouga / Carracosta
Qwilfish / Frillish / Jellicent
Wooper / Quagsire / Seismitoad
Carvanha / Sharpedo / Kingdra
No tentacool/cruel because that's what they'd -expect-.

Adelaide should be Ghost-type, because of all the murders that occur there.

I've mentioned earlier but I'd suggest Port Hedland over Broome.
It's in a relatively similar area and having the worlds biggest export port

Perth - Ground/Steel Type
>Leader: Gina
Vibrava
Krokorok
Steelix
Gliscor
Rhydon
Nidoqueen

For the actual gym buildings
Sydney - The Opera House
Melbourne - The MCG (massive cricket and football stadium)
Adelaide- Cathedral surrounded by parks. (Adelaide is known as the City of Churches and the CBD is entirely surrounded by parklands)
Perth- New Gym is in the middle of construction. Current Gym is the Perth mint (WA is known for its gold)
Darwin - The Brewery (NT's are known alcoholics)
Cairns - A tourist resort on the beach
Hobart - A convict era gaol

Something that may be of interest is that South Australia never had any convict immigration.
Every other state did with Tasmania and Western Australia having significant convict immigration.

Heh, I can see this. Party hears about a legendary pokemon, want to go investigate to 'dex / catch it. Fight through waves of croagunks and seismitoads and finally catches a glimpse of green. They move in, thinking they've finally found it...

And it's a politoad. "Well, fuck, we may as well catch it while we're here." they say. Then it opens up with the hydro pump.

On a related note, I would like to broach the subject of gym difficulty. Gym leaders becoming more difficult only makes sense if either 1. there is an order in which trainers are expected to challenge the gyms or 2. gym leaders hold back depending on how many badges the challenger has.

The system I have been toying with uses the latter. All gym leaders are roughly equal to the elite 4, and tailor their challenge depending on how many badges the challengers have. A 0-badge challenger would have a very easy battle, or some other task like an obstacle course, while a 7-badge challenger would face the gym leader at their very best.

That does make perfect sense.

Something geography related you may be interested in is the Nullabor.
It's a giant piece of limestone on the WA/SA border.

Has no trees and only shrubs.

If you are including Kalgoorlie (my home town) it's got a massive open cut gold mine and is also famous for brothels.
The water is piped 500kms from a dam next to Perth.

That is EXACTLY what I've been planning the entire time. That's why I list three columns for each gym, with the ones on the left being the weakest and the ones on the right being the strongest.

Moving along, have my first drafts for two more gyms:
>>SYDNEY - STEEL TYPE
>Leader: ???
Aron / Lairoon / Aggron
Beldum / Metang / Metagross
Pawniard / Mawile / Bisharp
Shieldon / Bastiodon / Bastiodon
Durant / Escavalier / Scizor
Magnemite / Magneton / Magnezone

>>BRISBANE - ELECTRIC TYPE
>Leader: ???
Joltik / Galvantula / Galvantula
Voltorb / Electrode / Rotom
Mareep / Flaaffy / Ampharos
Eleckid / Electebuzz / Electivire
Shinx / Luxio / Luxray
Magnemite / Magneton / Magnezone

So I need to narrow down types for Melbourne and Darwin. And I was thinking Grass-type for Darwin.

>>22964119

Lotad / Lombre / Ludicolo
Turtwig / Grotle / Torterra
Bulbasaur / Ivysaur / Venusaur
Budew / Roselia / Roserade
Paras / Parasect / Tropius
Shroomish / Breloom / Exeggutor

Anybody got ideas for Melbourne? I'm thinking I might go Poison-type, because Australia.

Could be really interesting if the gym leader has the Elemental Sync feature. Could mean crazy shit.

...If anyone even THINKS of suggesting a Dragon/Poison Dragonite, I will find some way to punch you through the internet.

Purple. I meant purple. Jesus fucking Christ, that is unforgivable.

An alternative would be Fighting types, maybe, with Toxicroak as their star 'mon.

Victoria doesn't really have the poisons.

To be honest Melbourne as grass and Darwin as poison would make a bit more sense.

A lot of ideas getting tossed around, I just can't make up my mind.

Talked to a friend of mine, who talked to her australian friends, who insisted Melbourne is so boring it should be Normal-type. I have no idea, but I do know if I do that I can't keep up the theme of "One poison type per gym."

>>22966734
Australia is known for deadly, poisonous creatures. Even some of the trees are poisonous.

If it would make you feel better, feel free to declare all Americans fat, selfish morons. I hear they make up most of our tourists. (Which is odd, since I wouldn't expect someone that takes up two seats to want to fly all that much.)

>>22967003
Possibly, though leave a lot of viable options unless they're fielding scizors.

And that's yet another type to my "maybe" list...
>>
>>22967196
Bug might be interesting.

Would have a Cricket pokemon, especially if as suggested the gym is based on the MCG

The levels, as well as the concept of a 'bonus boss', isn't all that plausible.

Campaign starts at level 0. I'm aiming a one session 2~4 times a month, 3~6 hour sessions. (It'll be the weekend.) And it's a group of two right now, maybe three. Four would be incredibly surprising, especially since the third likely can't make it every session.

So... Yeah. Maybe I'll look this up in a year, if the campaign is still going.

Pic related: Take this with my sincere apologies.

What bugs do you think it would be good?

Hm, good type spread and a mix of native and foreign 'mons. Sounds good.

Except Trapinch is a Ground type that evolves into Ground/Dragon, so that won't work. But it's not that I'm -against- using scyther/scizor, so they may take the sixth slot.

Oh man, the old IAPL map for the North American leagues. I should see if those guys are still around.

>>22967196
Fuck your friends, Melbourne is awesome. I travel up there anytime I can. Sydney is polluted as shit compared to Melbourne that I would have suggested a Poison-type Gym there if it weren't for the good spread of Poison-type mons in all gyms. Darwin is a hot tropical shithole, so hrmm...

>Darwin occupies one of the most lightning-prone areas in the world. On 31 January 2002 an early-morning squall line produced over 5,000 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes within a 60 kilometres (37 mi) radius of Darwin alone – about three times the amount of lightning that Perth, Western Australia, experiences on average in an entire year.

Electric gym for Darwin. Grass gym for Melbourne.Of course, then Brisbane needs a type. Make it Ice Type and have the Gym Leader constantly bitch about how hot it is in Queensland. She/he can sell ice creams and fight with Vanilluxe and such. Also, an Ice/Poison Cloyster because fuck you this is Australia.

Well, 1am again, /tg/, I'm heading to bed. But I'll leave you with a question:

What's a good place to start the players, location wise?
>>
>>22969041
Melbourne and Sydney are the two largest cities in Australia and between them probably hold close to a third of our population at a guess. It'd make sense for the players to all have begun in either Victoria or New South Wales, in any of the satellite cities or just the capitals. Travel between many of the East Coast cities is pretty easy and common thanks to short flights, trains, good highways, etc.

So I assume this version of Australia will only be about the size of New York state?

Pokemon regions are very small areas, taking the entirety of Australia as one region means you're making Australia very small

Alright. I'm planning a day the players and I can sit down and discuss their characters, so I'll bring those up as options, get their opinions. We can work the locations into their backstories.

>>22969739
Yes and no. It'll be smaller than real-world Australia, but larger than normal Pokemon regions. Traveling from city to city will take several days, at least by foot, where as in most of the handheld games it seems to take less than one day/night cycle to reach a near by town.

Getting pokemon to ride or the money to afford motorized transportation will be -essential- if they want to travel west. (Essentially as 'you better have a damn good plan otherwise', not as in 'mandatory.')

(And yeah, I said I was heading to bed, but I took a shower first. NOW I'm heading to bed. Thanks again for the help, /tg/.)
>>
ever think about having a gym based on weather effects like sandstorm? as in the effect is always up and the trainers from the gym only have pokemon that at immune to or gain an advantage from the weather?
