You are Sonia Reynard, Attack Wing Leader and Knight of the House of Jerik-Dremine! You command the Third Attack Wing, a mixed unit of fast hard hitting Cruisers, Frigates and Corvettes.
Last time finished off combat opoerations around the battlecruiser shipyard and in the process captured a ship with an intact cloaking shield. Due to damage Third Wing has been pulled from combat for the time being. With the extra down time you got some boxing practice in before your rematch with Chief Mechanic Ahani Daska. (No relation to Daska Rna.)
For the time being each squadron is rotating out between training, days off or escorting mining operations. While that was under control you took one of your days off to visit Tourta for a shopping trip with Linda. After buying a watch and matching poison ring along with a pendant to be shipped back home to your mother you visited the markets. One Merchant sold you a holographic decoy projector and set up a contract to create a smaller one to project a disguise over the wearer.

While the same merchant did have access to a Holo Camouflage system like the one on your armor the price was just too high to bother with. You'll have to see about setting up your bodyguard Valeri Fusaro with the one Sergeant Ecord has back at base.
It wasn't just items and equipment you bought on Tourta but information as well. A broker provided you with the location of an abandoned deep bunker complex which you then investigated. Infiltrating the island stronghold you were able to locate the hidden entrance and descend into its depths. With the assistance of an intrusion specialist in the heavy strike team you were able to disarm the automated defenses scattered across the island without triggering the demolition charges. Had your people continued to dismantle the weapon emplacements pointed skywards the entire facility would likely have been destroyed, flooded with seawater or both. Its equally fortunate you didn't try to destroy or disable the sentry guns inside the bunker.

With the site secured you and your people looted the base of valuables. Mostly weapons and munitions but also a new Type-6 Attack Bomber. Engineering crews will arrive in a day or two with a Constellation light transport that's being modified to operate underwater. They'll bring the fighter back to base and help fortify the island for use as a stronghold.

"What do you plan to do with the Starfighter?" Asks Kavos when you get back to the ship. "Its statistics look quite good but like any fighter it does not have any shields. I couldn't recommend you take it into battle."

The serial number is 1252 of the first batch of a mass production line. Its unknown how many Type-6 have been built in the Republic as their research and production bases were frequently targeted by both sides in the civil war.

>>23243460
Technically yes. But as you were using House assets to secure it counts as all salvage does. You and your team have 51% ownership. Still the House will want a lot of that equipment. The bonus to your pay cheque for capture of equipment will more than cover it.

>>23243589
It does not. There are a few odds and ends that have been left behind in the barracks but overall it's pretty spartan.

>We get a disturbing number of marines killed, I think.
No more than any other House. Your boarding operations have been fairly straight forward with some notable exceptions. Usually its been disabling a ship then boarding it. Its not like you're asking them to pull crazy David Lister shit.

Returning to base Kavos updates the Wing organisation and sends it to ypu. The Rookies have been split up and added to units short on pilots. Those that have lost their ships have been assigned new ones that should be finished repairs before the down time is over.

You have 10 WRP to spend. Station chart will be up in a sec.

Has been recovered.

Wing is once again operational. pic related.
After going through the wing status updates with Kavos you head aboard the station to see about your collarbone. The medics needed to do another check on it and you've been putting it off. With the recent upgrades to the medical bay the House had bought some equipment from the Terrans and the larger Houses. Both Humans and Dro'all can be operated upon much more effeciently now. It should also help with other species but wont have quite the same level.

Training is going well and there are plans for a Wing strength simulation tomorrow. You're not sure when your first tier people will be ready to be Knighted but it should be soon. The Commander is relieved to find out about progress in that regard though she questions elevating Mike at the same time as the others.
"If you believe he is ready then so be it but others will look for reasons for him to fail. As someone born among the lower classes I am not unsympathetic but because of this I will be watched as much as you for showing signs of favouritism. Keep this in mind."

>What say?
>>
>>23245019
"I'm honestly more worried about Edah then Mike Ma'am."
>>
>>23245019

"If he isn't up to par, I'll be the first to tell him so. He was responsible for our route into the prison on Gesaur, and continued to fight just as hard as I during our escape from the... Lat'ham(?) Trap."

If the Commander wants him delayed, we can have a chat with Mike.

Will we be losing any of our promoted people upon their knighthood?
>>
>>23245331
We aren't delaying him. He deserves it a hell of a lot more than Edah does.
>>
>>23245355

If promoting Mike in the first batch is going to be potentially damaging to both Sonia and the Commander, we should talk to Mike. It keeps the Commander from being forced into a situation she won't like us for, and allows us to get Mike to the point where he is the BEST of the batch. Not just part of it.

While we may not approve of stigma on commoners, the entrenched nobility sure as hell seems to.
>>
>>23245419
Nope. He gets promoted. I'm still annoyed that TSTG didn't stage manage the selection of the fourth squadron leader the way the players wanted to. He should be in that batch anyway, and Alex should be leading 4th squadron.
>>
>>23245483
No, was only second place on our aptitude test for leadership of fourth, and therefore he didnt get to command it.

What i approve of is giving Mike personal cram sessions in nobility stuff (secretly) so he will excel and surpass expectations.
>>
>>23245483

... did Mike sign any contracts with that Battle of Gesaur holo flick team?
>>
>>23245572
>>23245574

>>
>>23245572
Actually, the contest that Alex won carried the explicit prize of command of the fourth squadron. I'm kinda surprised he's on speaking terms.
>>
Back. Had computer problems.

>>23245483
>I'm still annoyed that TSTG didn't stage manage the selection of the fourth squadron leader the way the players wanted to.
As we never took a survey to determine how many wanted to rig a contest (bad form btw) I assumed that it was just 1 or 2 of you who wanted to put someone who was less tactically capable of leading a squadron in charge of 4th. Thal beat Mike hands down in larger unit tactics at the time. Mike was most capable of leading 3 ship units. If you want Alex and Mike to battle it out for control of 5th squadron whenever we get enough pilots then by all means. If you want to rig a contest feel free to request a survey on it .
If you had put Mike in charge of 4th at the time though it would have resulted in a negative modifier because he just wasn't up to it yet.
>>
>>23246217
I for my part never voted for any Contest-rigging. I am pretty okay with how our squadrons are managed at the moment.
>>
>>23246217
Actually, Alex would have been in command since he would have been more ready. I'm annoyed right now because this problem is rearing its head despite the fact that we took specific steps to defang accusations of favoritism. As for taking a survey, you shouldn't have had to, given that there wasn't a single person saying don't rig the contest, or disagreeing with making the contest that Alex actually won result in guaranteed command of 4th.
>>
>>23246377

When you do something against the social norm, there will -always- be accusations or whispers of favoritism.

You can only mitigate them.
>>
>>23246547
Okay, fine. Some people suggested taking specific efforts to make accusations of favoritism less credible, which again, not a single person said not to do. OP decided not to do it, so we are now having to deal with concerns of favoritism. It is kinda annoying.
>>
>>23246616

I think the Commander is simply reminding us that we are going against the social norm, and that doing so will likely have some negative impact upon both Sonia and herself. Regardless of mitigating factors.

While heading back to the ship from the station's medical bays you bump into another human causing an old model camera to fall out of his pocket. He hurries off offering a brief apology before you can stop him.
"Are you alright sir?" Asks Valeri.

You check your pockets and finding nothing missing pick up the camera. On the camera's display screen are the time date and a long string of other numbers you can't identify. Looking more carefully the date is listed as March 19, 4024, almost three months ago.

"Weird. This sure is one old camera. I suppose we'd better catch that guy before he leaves the station."
Breaking into a jog it doesn't take long for the two of you to catch up to the man.

"Excuse me! You dropped this." You say, getting the mans attention.

"Oh! Thank you, I would have been in a lot of trouble if I'd lost that." He responds. You're certain you've never met this man before yet he seems familiar. Oh well.

"Just try to be more careful. If you make a habit of bumping into Knights one of them might take offense." You warn him.

"Right. Thanks again." He tells you again before turning away.

"Well that was odd." You turn to Valeri. "Check with security as soon as we get back to the ship. I want to be sure he's not a security threat."
"Yes sir."

You're woken in the middle of the night by alarms from general quarters being sounded.
"What now?"

Throwing on your uniform you rush to the bridge. "What's our status?" You ask, walking through the door.
Kavos is hurriedly punching up wing and ship data.
"All forces have been put on alert. The enemy counter attack is bigger than anticipated. Our lunar defense batteries protecting that one shipyard are already under fire. They are currently being reinforced by Houses already in system but they could need more help if more enemy ships appear."

Arron speaks up next. "Detecting new contacts at the edge of the system. Three super heavies, twenty medium cruisers and a whole hell of a lot of smaller ships."

You throw on your headset and begin listening to the chatter over the command channel. "This is Reynard where do you want Third Wing?"

"Stand by Lieutenant. How many ships do you have available?"

You do a quick check. First squadron is out with the mining barge and you still have a number of ships which haven't finished repairs yet or are undergoing other overhauls. In total you have fifteen pilots without ships and only enough attack corvettes for nine of them. Unless you want four of them to use the old standard corvettes with the upgraded engines and shields. You haven't touched the things since the Smugglers Run. Hell, you don't even know if they're equipped with emergency teleporters.

Spare pilots are to ship up in old ships and relieve 1st Squadron. That mining Op needs to be canceled and the barges relocated to a friendly base immediately.

Depending on our orders I'll probably want to you take down any stragglers or ships fleeing the battle. Alex I'm putting you in charge of 4th squadron for the moment."

You change back to the command channel. "I have approximately four attack squadrons standing by. Be advised, my squadrons are at reduced strength."

"Understood. You're ordered to undock and join the screening force while the station is relocated into a lower orbit."

"This is Knight Commander Winifred to all House forces. We've received new data from Frostback Logistics base. This fleet conducted a long ranged bombardment of the base twenty minutes ago before disengaging and heading here. This may be an attempt to conduct a series of lightning raids. If so we only need to hold out long enough until they move on to the next site. All ships are to overlap their shields with the station to protect it. Attack Squadrons you can either stay with the station or harass the enemy flanks. Do not be caught in the open between the planet and the fleet, your shields will not last."

>>
>>23248986
swapping leadership around right before a critical engagement is a great way to screw with unit cohesion and get people killed.

>>
>>23249051
Disagree but frankly don't care. We've never not taken an opportunity to inhibit our two best friends careers, starting with passing them up as second in command for Daska based on a two day seniority advantage. It stops now.
>>
>>23249112
You forgot holding a contest for fourth squad when we could have just promoted one of them, choosing someone else despite ambivilant results because of some dice, then knighting Brian creating a rival for squad command despite a dismal combat record becuase they are just dice.
>>
I find it a little odd that none of our friends have really discussed squadron leadership with us. If any of them had a problem with it, I think they'd say something.

Of course, I might have just missed that conversation.
>>
>>23249383
That's not really a conversation you can have in the military. Even if they felt that we were passing them over (which I wouldn't be surprised if they did, because we are) talking to us about it would be awkward as hell, would put us in one hell of a spot.
>>
>>23249460
Oh, forgot to mention, they would also have to worry about us taking it wrong and shit-canning their career. Which probably would happen in quite a few modern armies.
>>
>>23249460
Even so, I'd think they would at least allude to the problem. We seem to be approachable enough.
>>
>>23249541
If they know us well enough to consider us a friend, they don't have to worry about that, as long as they're tactful about it.
>>
>>23249460

I imagine obvious favoritism for promotions would also be frowned upon. Didn't we tell Mike we wanted to get him knighted when we took him to the superfunpartyofdominionlove?
>>
>>23249553
...Don't we suffer from PTSD? Also, when was the last time we talked to them in anything resembling privacy? Or they could just be unwilling
>>
>>23249608
This is an aristocratic society, blatant favoritism happens. For example, I don't think it was a coincidence that the when that Helios fleet commander mentioned other possible commanders he talked about his brother. I also don't want to do obvious favoritism. I'd prefer less obvious favoritism, like, say, rigging a contest to provide justification.

As ships begin to get organised with some moving into position to aid the station the enemy fleet makes it appearance. The bulk of the fleet jumps in beyond the edge of the gravity well and opens fire on the station and the orbital defenses with heavy phase cannon. A screening force of smaller enemy ships moves closer, ready to intercept attempts by your forces to strike at the heavier ones. The Commanders battleship and escort pulls away from the station and extends shields to assist.

Return fire from the orbital defenses flash past, a mix of phase cannon fire and mass driver rounds. Starfighters also launch, heading out to launch torpedoes at the pirate fleet. Anywhere between the station and the fleet is not a place you want to be right now.

Where will you be striking at the enemy fleet from?
>>
>>23249640
We have PTSD points, but from our dialogue and how we handle things, it seems that we tend to be sort of manic and obsessed with military matters in general, but not closed off or in a berserker haze or anything like that.

We don't spend too much time talking to anyone besides Winifred and our own ship's crew. It may be assumed to happen in the background, but we don't often have scenes where we personally discuss things with our friends.

I don't think we should risk our escort carriers, and that they'll do more good defending the station from enemy attack groups.
>>
Not one person suggested creating a couple more understrength squadrons instead of returning battle damaged squadrons to full strength. Normal squadron strength is 12 or 12+1 commanding officer. You don't have to keep them that strength its just far easier to keep track of. This would have given you more than ample ability to spread out your resources and promote more people to squadron leaders.

>>23250589
All ships and crews not engaged in the defense are assisting with evacuation of the station.

Second Squadron, Fourth Squadron and the Blackbird, form up and move out. Escort Carriers, I'd like two of you to send your fighters along with us. Keep your ships back here or among the defense platforms where they'll be safe. Everyone else try to help defend the station."

Ten cruisers if counting your own, five frigates and two corvettes move out at best possible speed, angling towards the aft end of the enemy fleet. Eight squadrons of starfighters hang back slightly, ready to either jump forward or use the shields of your larger ships for cover. As soon as you leave the station behind space around you fills with weapons fire. You're fortunate enough that the EX-K has a narrow side profile merely requiring you roll slightly to present a smaller target. The three vengeance Types and the Bulk cruiser are not so luckily but their pilots are use to this sort of thing by now. You clear the edges of the kill zone without any serious damage.

With everyone at full power you close to range with elements of the screening force. A few medium cruiser towards the back of the fleet spare a few phase cannon to fire in your direction but you're still just outside their effective range. The same can't be said for stationary targets as the station continues to be hammered by the long range guns.

Up ahead the leading elements of smaller ships open up on you.
"You know the drill, ECM and missiles."

As ball explosions begin to light up space everyone spreads out for more room to maneuver. You trade fire with an enemy frigate armed with a pair of spinal mount guns, the both of you trying to evade the others fire but despite the other ship's smaller size you can take that much more damage and are a slightly better shot. A stray torpedo punches through the upper forward armor and blows the topside clear off sending it spiralling off out of control.

The rest of your ships have done some damage as well, most of them focusing fire to take down a ship or two. Mike's wingman has taken a bad hit as has one of the Frigates in fourth. Both squadrons maintain speed, leaving enemy ships from the group to slow down and turn in your wake.

"I'm still not seeing any enemy fighters. Outer most screening group has changed course. There's a gap we could exploit to attack their heavier ship." Point out Arron.
"Yeah and then if they turn back we'll be caught between the heaviest ships and a force five to ten times our size. Lets not do that. Reynard to all ships change course twenty five degrees starboard. We'll clip the far edge of this next group then circle out and around to try and threaten the rear of the main force. Fighters, drop your torps on this next pass."

The eight squadrons from the carriers plus those launched from your ships move up and fire their torpedo salvo before breaking off. The added punch is definitely needed as this group is much larger and more densely packed than the last. A few battlecruisers are lurking towards the center ready to jump any of you that get into close combat. Keeping things to a quick flyby is starting to look like the right idea.

The volume of fire becomes staggering. Even with the shield upgrades and hard maneuvering with the emergency thrusters you still take some hits to the armor. Everything looks minor for the moment though.

The one with the whole political treaty thing went up into the 20's in terms of votes but I'm quite certain people were voting from multiple computers at that point.

Both of the corvettes the rookies are piloting take hits, though not for lack of effort. Eight enemy ships explode under the fire of your squadrons. Most of those had been weakened by torpedo hits thankfully. Breaking clear of the enemy ship group those of you with aft weapons put down some fire. Half the enemy ships turn to follow you breaking up the tight formation that had been giving you trouble.

A quick check of the damage shows that most of those still with you can still fight. You order two of the more damaged Frigates to jump to the edge of the system for safety. Only three of your ships escaped with little to no damage, with Daska being one of them for a change.
"Everyone get shield back up to full before we turn back towards the rear of the enemy fleet." you order.

As you begin the long slow arc out and around towards the back of the enemy fleet the separate force of ships from the farthest flank section continues to shadow your movements. Because of their position they'll be able to rush to block any attack of yours on the larger starships.

"We're drawing out a good number of enemy ships from that flank group." Observes Kavos. "Its just too bad we cant exploit it."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qu0QO1za64E#t=0m37s

Shortly after a dozen battlecruisers jump in a few thousand km away from the now exposed group pursuing you. Fire from Sylvan's battlecruiser group shreds a squadron's worth of smaller ships in the opening salvo.

Your orders?
>>
>>23252727
"Good timing. Are you up for a joint attack?"

I suggest that our two groups bust up the nearest enemy screening forces and try to clear some breathing room for an attack on the main fleet.

"Thanks Captain."

You bring your squadrons back around and pour on the speed. How will you approach?

Sticking to the outskirts is a good idea. It should maximize the endurance of the battlecruisers. The longer they can stay, the better.
>>
>>23253060
It'd be nice if some of the escort carriers could get free and microjump out somewhere behind us to provide fighter support.
>>
"See if any of the Escort Carriers can get clear and micro jump out and around to this side of the battle." you tell coms.

Closing in you tell your people to keep to the edges of the battle shaping up around Sylvan's squadron. At first glance it doesn't look like they need much help but that will undoubtedly change.

With second squadron down to five ships you join up with them, forming up into a flight with Mike and Kat. Second squadron is forced off by heavy fire on the first pass, though it does draw some away from fourth squadron allowing them to do some more damage than they would have otherwise. Still, even just sticking to the outskirts is dangerous work with the way these pirates have upgraded.

Its been awhile since you were fighting along side the other pilots like, this most of the time skipping between squadrons as needed. While you normally go all out in most battles you still have to put some effort into keeping up with both of your former wingmen. Mike threads his cruiser between most of the seriously dangerous problems while Drake uses the superior engines of her custom ship to power through most. Drake clips the edge of one wing while evading a ship, Mike loses a pulse cannon and you manage to lose most of the armor around your portside engine.

"Engines are still operational. Afterburner is not looking so good right now." Reports Kavos.

"Enemy ships are retreating." Says Arron as you notice enemy Frigates break off first followed shorty after by the corvettes.

"Sylvan to Reynard, we're out of here." Announces the captain as the battlecruisers fire off one more torpedo salvo before turning away. Sure enough six medium cruisers and a number of battleships towards the back of the enemy fleet are maneuvering for a better shot.

"Third Wing, lets pull back so we don't take the brunt of this."
>>
>>23253828
As heavy phase cannon fire begins to land hits on the battlecruisers the larger ships begin to jump out. You do the same, jumping your damaged ship four million km out if only to buy time to regroup and let shields recharge.

At the edges of the system new contacts begin to appear on sensors. "New super heavy cruisers just jumped in, four of them and eight medium cruisers. Having trouble with their ID due to the amount of ECM they're putting out."

"Winifred to all House ships, the enemy fleet is retreating. Stand by to assist in recovery efforts."

As the enemy fleet jumps out ship by ship you wait until enough have cleared the area to risk jumping back in. The last elements of the screening groups perform an orderly retreat preventing any of your ships from getting the drop on them.

Once the area is clear the jamming lessens and you're able to identify the newcomers as a Kavarian taskforce. They jump out in pursuit of the pirate fleet a few minutes later after dispatching some transports and carriers to assist in recovery efforts.

After jumping back into orbit you're hailed by the Commander. "A combined fleet is forming up to continue pursuing the enemy raiding fleet. You have one hour to assemble a force to join them. If your ship is too badly damaged either transfer your flag or assign someone else from your wing to lead the unit."

Any chance of emergency repairs on our damaged ships in 2nd and 4th?

I'm tempted to concentrate our undamaged cruisers into 1st wing [we have 11 undamaged]

Then form an over-strength temp squadron of all our corvettes and frigates out of 5th [we have 12 corvettes + 5 frigates]

If that allows us to get some forces going while we get some quick-fixes done to bring the rest of the wing into better combat shape, it might be worth it.

Okay, so 1st and 3rd will join the pursuit force.
Undamaged cruisers from the other squadrons are moved into those units.
>Then form an over-strength temp squadron of all our corvettes and frigates out of 5th [we have 12 corvettes + 5 frigates]
Frigates and corvettes are pulled from 1st and 3rd to reinforce 5th

Damage ships and the 4 standard corvettes remain as a reserve.

Is 5th going with the pursuit force and if so who is in Command? All of your squadron leaders pilot cruisers so unless you want them to take a corvette or frigate it will mean moving a cruiser back into 5th. You have more Knights and squadron leaders than you have operational squadrons at the moment, And that's before adding in a pair of acting Squadron leaders.
>>
>>23260232
I don't like this. I'd rather dissolve 5th and assign their attack corvettes to 1st and 3rd.

Standard corvettes (i don't want to risk ships without emerg. teleporters) from 5th reinforce 4th while the undamaged cruisers from 2nd and 4th join up with 1st and 3rd in the way you showed.

That way we have

1st: 5 cruisers, 3 frigattes, 4 attack corvettes

2nd: 5 Damaged Cruisers (2nd will be pulled of the line for repairs and join up with 4th, Daska temporarily commands both squadrons)

3rd: 5 cruisers, 2 frigattes, 5 attack corvettes

4th: 2 damaged cruisers, 2 damaged frigattes, 3 standard corvettes (will be pulled of the line for repairs and put together with 2nd, under Daskas command)

Command squad: 1 Cruiser (Thal pilots, we command from the secondary bridge), 4 escort carriers, 1 Blackbird.

1st, 3rd and Command joins the attacking force.
>>
>>23260232
I'm thinking putting Daska in charge of our Escort squadron, (Since they apparently don't actually have a commanding officer) with us stealing her ship. Even out the three front line squadrons and put our squad leaders in charge of each of them. Mike and Alex lead the reserve 2nd and 4th respectivly.
>>
>>23260546
I'd prefer to have three understrength squadrons than two over strength
1st: 3 cruisers 2 frigates 3 attack corvettes 1 dagger (Rah'ne)
2nd: 5 Damaged Cruisers, 2 undamaged standards (Mike, reserve)
3rd: 3 cruisers 2 frigates, 3 attack corvettes and 1 dagger (Arthur)
4th: 2 damaged cruisers, 2 damaged frigates, 2 undamaged standards (Alex, reserve)
5th: 4 cruisers 1 frigate 3 attack corvettes and 1 daggar (Daska)

Despite damage to the station and numerous defense platforms in the raid there are still a few repair berths in operation. Realising that staying aboard the EX-K is just not going to be possible if you plan to remain in command of your forces in the pursuit force you transfer your flag to Thal's ship. A hurried reorganization gets you three partially operational attack squadrons together before the deadline to move out.

Three of Captain Sylvan's Battlecruisers and some of the Light Cruisers left a few minutes after the raiders departed. As your ships form up you're sent a data burst from the Command ship. It isn't just been your bases that have been under attack. Nearly every logistics base has been targeted by raids of somesort and the major shipyards are being hit by one of two larger fleets.

Intel reports that both enemy main fleets have now linked up and are projected to hit the still enemy held shipyard where your people had detected medium cruisers under construction. After that the analyists arent sure if they'll split up or stick together. The battlecruiser yard your unit captured is being evacuated and the training squadrons readied to abandon the system as they'll never be able to hold it against such a large force.

The pursuit force being rallied by the Houses and other Factions is attempting to catch up with as much strength as possible. All fifteen super heavy cruisers in the area have been formed up with plans to either catch the pirate fleet or drive them out before serious damage is done.

>>
Jumping into the system being used as a rally point by both sides long range sensors detect three fleets present. Concordance, Normandy, their support elements and the fleet of Kavarian ships that had left Surakeh an hour ago are engaging one of the pirate fleets at range. The other pirate fleet is just finishing up a planetary bombardment with their specially configured arrays.

"That's one planet we wont be getting drive core component from for awhile." Says Rah'ne. "It looks like the mines and factories have been completely obliterated."

You study the displays on the secondary bridge. "We have to join up with the task force and see if we can limit damage to other areas. Coms find out where the fleet commanders want us."

"Sir, there's a lot of com traffic. Apparently the Terrans want to use Veckron weaponry but most of the Houses are worried it could disrupt long term commerce in the area."

Not good. This sort of deadlock could paralyse the fleets. The Admiralty is thinking the same thing and have given up on keeping the enemy from escaping this system. Instead they're preparing to intercept at the next shipyard. If they plan to evacuate the Medium cruisers under construction there it could buy time to do some damage.

A minute later you're given new coordinates to jump to.

On reversion it seems you're off on one flank of the Kavarian fleet along with a few squadrons of allies attack corvettes and some of the Kavarian attack cruiser squadrons. As you're listed as an elite unit you've been put in command of some other squadrons nearby.

1x Kavarian Attack Cruiser Squadron
2x Attack Corvette Squadron

K-Type Attack Cruiser
Weapons
4x torpedo launcher
2x phase cannon array
1x spinal mount phase cannon
1x phase cannon turret (aft)
The current main line attack cruiser used by the Kavarian Imperium, the K-Type is a significant improvement over previous models. With four sublight engine banks it is far more difficult to cripple these ships and improve maneuverability. The K-Type were the first starships to mount armor designed to resist SP torpedoes.

The main fleets plan to maintain formation, closing in to possibly cut off the escape of the pirates or force them to abandon recovery efforts.

I think we should take them with us, but have them deploy their starfighters before we hit up the shipyard. That way they can put full energy on their shields, are in a (sort of) save group (and don't need special escorts) and we can recover fighters whenever we feel like.

They should obviously fly in the center of the formation, so the other ships can overlap shields to protect them if necessary.

I've been wondering, given how lethal starfighter combat is in this setting - do pilots have the option to retire/shift into training after a certain number of kills or missions?
>>
You lay out the plan to jump out then behind the plan for a fast strike at the shipyard.

"Shouldn't we inform our superiors before launching such an attack?" Asks one of the Kavarian Cruiser captains. "It may be detrimental to the fleet action as a whole."
"We're on the farthest flank which means we would be in position to pull off such a maneuver anyways. We're just helping it along by using some micro jumps. Hafnar I want you prepared to jam sensors and communications on the back side of the planet once we jump in. I don't want ground based sensors signalling the fleet that we're coming."

"Yes sir."

The wing reduces speed, falling back behind the other nearby attack ship units until you're obscured from view. Once that's taken care of the entire unit turns and jumps out past the edge of the system. Far enough to get outside sensor range but no so far that they'll have time to track your drive signature. It takes only a moment to realign for the return flight. The starfighter squadrons report they're loaded up and ready for deployment.

The instant the Wing reverts to real space the Blackbird begins jamming. The orbital defenses are minor but they still exist, the handful of satellites opening fire with spinal mount phase cannon. After positioning themselves safely behind the bulk of your ships the Escort Carriers deploy fighters. It doesn't take long for all sixteen squadrons to be away.

Your hands clench at not being at the controls of a starship, watching weapons fire flash past and feeling the engines rumble. It may not be the first time you've been in this situation and it certainly wont be the last but that doesn't mean you have to like it. The horizon of the planet draws closer as all ships continue to build up speed.
>>
Hafnar contacts you on on tight beam. "Coming into view of the enemy main fleet in ten seconds. Be advised, enemy ships may have already realised they've lost contact with the satellites near us."

"Understood." Too late to anything about it now.

After clearing the horizon all ships change course to push out and away towards the station. Fighters spread out while the carriers bunch up near Thal who will try to offer them some protection. The closest group of enemy ships opens fire but are too far out of position to keep up with your fast moving ships. A good thing too, as a few Transcendent class cruisers fire plasma cannon beams at you.
One of the Kavarian ships dodge the wrong way and catches a pair of beams in the forward superstructure. Six allied corvettes are hit by the long ranged fire as well but your people seem to have things under control with their new analysis program. Fifth squadron takes shield damage but recovers long before the final run on the station.

"Enemy ships around the station are repositioning and launching starfighters." Reports specialist manning sensors.

Your starfighters move up and begin launching missiles to intercept befoire the enemy can begin launching torpedoes against you. The white streaks of missile trails fill spare around the wing. In the distance dozens of enemy fighters either explode or are torn to shreds by the warheads.

"What are you waiting for?" Yells Daska trying to get a point across. "Its a stationary target!"

You stab the com button on your command chair. "All ships fire Torpedoes!"

All of your Frigates and cruisers open up but hold off on missiles for a few seconds to make sure their fire is on target. Any fighters that hadn't already done so add their torpedoes to the opening volley. You watch the enemy ship movements on sensors and the distance between the wing and the station. The first wave of torpedoes arrives at the target just after return fire begins to seek you out.

"Break off. All ships break off. Turn and burn." You order knowing that if you get any close you'll just start taking taking damage without adding much more. You can feel the engines begin to strain through the turn as the wing changes course. Some of the allied corvettes take hits but the majority of those still with you make it. The Norune blockade runner in 5th squadron inevitably takes hull damage but escapes serious harm to the engines. 1st and 3rd barely take any damage at all.

The Fighters continue to duel with those launched from the station for a minute more then turn and follow in your wake. The enemy does not give chase, just putting down supression fire to keep you from changing your mind about coming around for another pass.

Now headed back for the opposite side of the planet you take a moment to look at the damage caused. The torpedoes launched by the fighters helped weaken the shield enough for those launched by the starships to collapse it. Two of the Medium cruisers in dock were hit, damaging or outright destroying their partially completed drive sections. A third is pinned by collapsed station gantries. The ships defending the station are now turning most of their attention to dragging the damaged ships out of the docks. The others are launching and moving to take up positions with the retreating enemy fleets.

The combined fleet attempting to cut off their escape isn't moving quickly enough to do so. It does look like the pirates will have to abandon the damaged mediums. A few ships fire their phase cannons into the docks, destroying most of the worker arms that were left behind.

>>
>>23268748
Probably way too many ships involved to get us anything better than 1/512 of some random cruiser.
>>
>>23268770
If that tiny piece we get happens to be a drive plate, it would be worth plenty.

However, I think what we should be looking for is intact ships that require very little repair work. Even if we only get a single corvette that needs a little yard time, that would probably make Winifred happier than if we dragged in a twisted mess of metal that might have most of a cruiser inside it somewhere.

Salvage is likely to become an even bigger headache because of the damage to all our forces and the very facilities needed to fix them up.
>>
>>23268914
I am guessing there will be a bit of a lull in the fighting once this is over. It looked like the pirates used all forces they still have in this dwarf galaxy. Once they get destroyed/fall back i assume there won't be much resistance left.
>>
After pulling away from the planet to a safe distance and forming up with the fleet again your Blackbird pilot cuts back on the jamming enough to listen in on the fleet com. Not much seems to have changed regarding the veckron weaponry and there are apparently problems with the fleet maintaining cohesion. Several Houses want to make a hard push to seize the yard before more damage can be done to it which would not only make it easier for the Pirates to mount a counter attack but slow the advance of the Kavarian force.

"Someone tell me this isn't a military operation." you mutter, careful that your mic isn't hot.

As the pirate fleets begin to jump out of the system section by section the third allied fleet arrives at the system edge and attempts to align for a micro jump in system. The Admirals for the various forces soon call it off. They wont be able to jump enough ship in quickly enough to halt the Pirate evacuation.

After most of the Pirates have fled TCS Loreto appears at the edges of the system escorted by half the House Helios fleet.
Cool, you wonder if the Terrans will let you talk to the AI. You still haven't gotten any response back yet.
>>
>>23269257
... Jesus, our admirals prove again to be hilariously incompetent and absolutely unsuited for joint operations.
>>
>>23269257
You're a bit surprised when the Terran super heavy begins broadcasting.
"Attention all ships. This Admiral Chen, Supreme commander of the Terran Expeditionary Fleet. To assist in organising a response to this enemy incursion the respective governments of the Dominion, Kavarian Imperium and the Rovinar Federation have placed me in command of all assets within this dwarf galaxy. House Helios has most graciously offered to assist in this regard by seeing to any Houses that refuse this order. The Emperor has for the moment requested we do not use Veckron weaponry within this space. All Terran Admirals are to stop wasting precious time requesting permission to use them until the enemy is at least in deep space.
We will have to coordinate our efforts and strike as a larger force. This is something we are capable of. All fleets prepare for immediate departure. The enemy is headed for a cruiser grade shipyard. Fast attack ships stand by to receive special instructions. We have very little time, now move!"

Within a minute your wing is sent jump data that will have you head off separately from the rest of the fleet. From the looks of things you wont be the only attack wing sent off in this direction.

Was waiting for that. Some names just don't survive the passage of time as well as others.

Two of the main fleets will try to force the Pirates away from the shipyard. This will make it difficult for them to bombard it into dust should other elements of the plan fail. Once the third fleet will either jump into a blocking position to trap the enemy fleets or simply assist in breaking them causing a rout.

Meanwhile the attack squadrons will go after she shipyard itself.

Team A will strike at the outer most defenses and cause a distraction for the other two teams. A Heavy Carrier normally based out of the shipyard is expected to be present and helping with the evacuation. Disable the ship as soon as possible as it will be able to evacuate damaged ships from the battle.

Team B will attack the base defenses and ships evacuating troops or supplies. Once thats taken care of assist wither Team A or C in their missions. Stay on alert, you'll be in the line of fire if the yard is bombarded by the enemy fleet.

Team C will be responsible for disabling or capturing the primary control systems for the yard. Your route should get you inside the shipdocks but if you cant find a hole make one. Prevent any remaining troops or ships within the yard from trying to trigger a self destruct. If successful try to protect the yard from possible enemy bombardment.

Which mission will you be volunteering for? I have to step out and will be back in not too long I hope.

Responding quickly lest you end up stuck with an assignment you'd rather not take part in you volunteer the unit to join team A.

The Dominion and Kavarian forces already assigned to assist your Wing will remain despite the corvettes being somewhat depleted.
One squadron of Scorpion class attack cruisers, and two squadrons of Assault Corvettes will accompany Team A. The Rovinar have assigned a handful of Silent hunters and Cruisers that have lost their cloaks for whatever reason. Mercenaries with a half dozen Firestorm Frigates and two more attack corvette squadrons will round out the unit.

The Terrans have assigned a Blackbird to hang back and provide additional ECM support.
Some of the Assault Corvettes will be carrying SP torpedoes and will attempt to hang back until all forces are engaged before committing.

What is your plan of attack for your part of the unit aside from being as flash as possible?
>>

>>
>>23271895
You will be in command of your wing and the ships assigned to your wing. The rest of the team will be assigned to one of the other commanders. They do not take orders from you but will work either with or around you depending on what you plan to do with your unit.
>>
>>23271846

Have our blackbird work with the Terran one for maximum ECM. I'm not sure if that would mean keeping them together or spreading them.

Perhaps our depleted corvettes should mix with the ones carrying the SP torps. An apparent over-strength squadron may better conceal and cover the critical torpedo ships until they get their payload out.

Our carriers may want to load out 2/3rds or even all of our fighters for anti-fighter work to begin with, so we can hopefully wipe out the enemy fighter forces that manage to launch.

Other than that, I think we just need to coordinate with the rest of the group to alpha strike the carrier or clear a hole for SP torps to get it. Then we hopefully break up the remaining enemy ships and slaughter them

There isn't much time to plan out the details of the attack but there is enough. The Rovinar were already hoping to punch a hole through the outer ships for the few assault corvettes with SP torps. Now they're going to stand that much of a better chance at it with your Wing assisting them.

Team A drops out of FTL beyond the edge of what would normally be the gravity well of a moon this size. The debris ring still sharing much of the orbit of the moon is filled with enough large chunks to wreck a larger ship. The main fleets are all staying well away which will make it easier for the Pirates to escape when they try to run for it.

The ECM boats spread out, jamming everything that isn't friendly and even a few frequencies that are. Teams B and C drop out only after the jamming is in place and approach the surface, flying low.

"Lets give them a show." Says Commander Enright, ranking officer of the Terran contingent. The Scorpions open up with missiles and your ships do the same, lighting up space above the moon with dozens of fireballs. One of the Rovinar cruisers fires an odd round from its torpedo launcher that fragments on detonation scattering eight other warheads that then go off.

"Note to self, check the specs on those things." You say out loud.

Drawing in closer to the cracked open section of the moon you start to realise just how many attack cruisers are present. There was a reason you'd put off raiding this place and it wasn't just the Heavy Carrier, though that was a big part of it. |

As the others spread out engaging the cruisers yours tighten up formation. The Rovinar ships fire off their stores of SP torpedoes dealing serious damage to a number of ships in the way and crippling the shield generators on a few. Your people take full advantage of the weakness finishing off those that your allies were only able to cripple.

Return fire is heavy. 5th Squadron completely avoids any because of their position but 3rd squadron and many of the corvettes are less fortunate. If it wasn't for your starfighters firing off what few torpedoes they had most of the squadron might have been crippled. As it is Arthur pulls his unit from combat due to damage and wishes you luck.
The Rovinar ships have a run of bad luck and soon all but one of their cruisers have been crippled or killed. The Kavarians however are proving their mettle, and despite losing two ships have either evaded or shrugged off the worst of it.

Punching through to the Carrier hasn't been easy but you've made it past the worst of it. Your fighters with their heavier missile load out mow through the opposition, keeping bombers off the unit long enough for the Gammas to move up. Heavy phase cannon fire from the Carrier forces off most of the Wing except for 5th who continue to throw out missiles and torpedoes for cover. Daska's ships close to point blank making you think for a second that she's lost it and is pulling a kamikaze. At the last possible moment 5th pulls up, just missing the carriers drive section. Five SP torpedoes fly through the space they just vacated striking the drives of the large ship.
>>
Hitting their emergency thrusters the assault corvettes mimic Daska's maneuver, but alter it slightly. Keeping the bows of their ships pointed at the Carrier as they pass they launch a second torpedo volley and open up with their pulse cannons. It isnt enough to completely cripple the big ship but it certainly does damage. The Corvettes, looking somewhat scorched from engine wash, form up with Daska on the far side and circle around for another run.
The Carrier now has its remaining drives at full power and is trying to get some altitude. You have no idea how many more SPs the Terran ships still have but Daska is doing her best to cover them.

Watching some of the tactical displays you see some of your starfighters actually get inside the main bay of the Carrier. You have no idea how much damage they could cause in there but as far as distractions go its certainly helping to provide one.

The other teams have entered the shipyard by now and you can see fighting going on from Team B ships far below. You're kind of in a bad place here with the battle around the carrier fast devolving into an all out brawl, mind you it seems to be an even one.

Before things can start to shift back in the enemy's favour you order all of your ships to concentrate on cruisers trying to target 5th squadron. Daska and her unit haven't become the focus of enemy fire from the smaller ships yet but that will change.

The rolling twisting battle shifts second by second, and with the sort of engine power available to those on both sides collisions start to become commonplace. Even as the Heavy Carrier tries to get some distance from the shipyard 5ths squadron and the Terran Assault Corvette unit continue to hammer their engines. You start to get an idea of what the House Lat'tham forces went through when trying to cripple or kill the Akagi battlegroup as the ship proves to be resilient.

"Torpedo stores exhausted, going to guns." Reports the assault corvette unit captain. The corvettes scatter, rapid firing their heavy pulse cannons into the shields and superstructure of the larger ship alongside your people. Several varieties of Vengeance types swoop in to clear them off by are intercepted by 1st squadron and the Kavarian unit.

Looking at the rest of the battle you see that while the remaining mercenaries are still mostly intact they're being driven off by superior numbers in their section. Most of the Attack Corvettes in Team A have been crippled or have fled towards the shipyard to link up with Team B. The Terrans are holding it together despite damage and losses to their Scorpions and assault corvettes.

Thal contacts you from the main bridge. "Sir, we're in a bad place here. I'm leading the Escort Carries into the yard for cover. Team B has it mostly under control."

"Go for it, try to cover them." you add.

Watching the enemy capital ship continuing its climb, a few explosions flash from the main bays. Armor on a section of the starboard side suddenly erupts outward in a fireball, it doesn't fade though plume streaming into space.
>>
Someone must have hit a reactor near a fuel storage bunker but that would be a tricky shot from almost anywhere. Starfighters and cruisers stream out of the main bays on the Carrier, a wave of fusion plasma and flames pouring out after them. A few of the fighters were yours but the starships are most definitely enemy ones.

You're distracted from the main battle by a heavy impact to the ship. A flight of Cruisers similar to the afterburner customs you captured are in pursuit of the Escort Carriers. Thal cartwheels the ship bringing the enemy into view then throws the engines into reverse. While outgunned your pilot continues engaging the trio of cruisers with the forward weapons long enough for some of your starfighters to arrive and begin harassing them. The added distraction comes just in time as phase cannon fire penetrates the shields, disabling a pair of turrets.

When more torpedo fire streaks in from below it causes the enemy flight to break off. A pair of Kavarian cruisers backed up by an Aries swoop past. Parts of Team B are now diverting to assist the main battle.

Rechecking the tactical displays you see the Carrier now bleeding fuel, atmosphere and fusion flame out into space. You cant tell from your displays if their FTL is still operational, but it's going to be close either way. Apparently unwilling to simply wait and see, elements of the enemy fleet beyond the gravity well redirect fire. Heavy phase cannon beams fill space around the Carrier driving off your forces, those of your allies and enemy ships still nearby.

"This is Enright, pull back towards the yard, their guns wont be able to hit us from there."

Enemy attack cruisers are using the distraction to scatter in every direction. Some are headed towards the main fleet while others are running for the lunar surface, likely to flee to the other side of the moon and escape. Fighting around parts of the shipyard are still quite heavy and once you're sure the Escort Carriers are safe direct more of your fighters to assist. Some land to rearm with additional torpedoes.

"Be advised sir, our starfighter missile stores are nearly expended."
"Understood, just do what you can." you tell them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NMKOa4KY9I

Up above it all the engines and weapons on the Carrier at last fail. The great brick of a ship goes dark except for the few places where fires still burn out of control, consuming fuel or remaining atmosphere. Elements of the Pirate main fleets were already jumping out even before the ship bagan to falter. With it dead in space the other have no reason to remain behind.

The broken hulls of two dozen battleships and battlecruisers litter space where the larger fleets had been fighting. Medium cruisers from both side are on fire or disabled. Two of the allied super heavies show signs of damage to their engines or weapons but remain mostly operational.

"This is Team C leader to all strike teams, we have control of the shipyard systems. There is no threat of a self destruct being triggered at this time."

As mop up operations get underway Admiral Chen addresses the Fleet.

"While bulk of the enemy force may have been able to retreat we have none the less dealt serious damage to key elements. Long range scans indicate they are not moving on to raid other systems in this dwarf galaxy but are returning home. While I will not say that the entire enemy strength in this region has been defeated it seems clear they are abandoning any efforts at local resistance. Individual House fleets will be free to depart the pursuit force once we are certain this is not a feint. Thank you for your cooperation.

All forces that took part in the assault on the shipyard are expected to receive commendations and not just for their respective chains of command. Expect to get a few more medals from the Terrans, Rovinar and the Kavarians, though most nobles would frown on the latter.

You send a messages to the Commander reporting the results of the battle and at the same time nominate your starfighter pilots for some of the highest awards they can receive.

Salvage claims!

The Houses and other forces that took part in the attack on the shipyard are being offered salvage claims on wrecked or crippled enemy ships. The yard produced three different variations of the Vengeance Type, the two older models and their own newer one which can be customized more easily to fit a number of roles. These include afterburner options (engine upgrade sold separately), minelayers and additional capacity for starfighter, shuttles or LST's.

3 Vengeance afterburners custom: With these we could make a fast chaser/blockade runner/brawler Squadron. Focus heavily on good engines and point defence so that they can survive in the middle of enemy formations.
Short range beam weaponry at all angles for maximum effectiveness.

2 Vengeance type B.
Longrange Artillery ships. Heavy spinal mounted guns with plenty of torpedo launchers to back it up.

>3 Vengeance afterburners custom:
>Focus heavily on good engines and point defence so that they can survive in the middle of enemy formations.
Be advised that buying DHI afterburners will cost 1 WRP per ship.

>Short range beam weaponry at all angles for maximum effectiveness.
For the point defense? Or did you want smaller phase cannon turrets than normal?
These ones tend to have 4 spinal mount phase cannon + 4 torpedo launchers as default. You could potentially replace the spinal mounts with 8 light phase cannon arrays, though power would be a bit tight. As always the cannons cant fire when the afterburners are online, hence the heavier torpedo armament.

>2 Vengeance type B.
>Longrange Artillery ships. Heavy spinal mounted guns with plenty of torpedo launchers to back it up.
While they normally carry 4 spinal mount heavy pulse cannons it should be possible to equip them with 2 spinal mount Heavy Phase Cannon like those on battlecruisers. These ships being much bulkier than their brethren helps in that regard.
4 torpedo launchers could replace the missile batteries and could possibly be augmented with smaller missile launchers.
