In the future of the early 90s, after a series of unspecified plot devices, the racing industry underwent a series of thorough changes, that somehow resulted in a new kind of races, in which cars, pilots, and race queens are one and the same, combining high-tech engineering, extraordinary driving skills, fame factor and sex appeal in one curvy chassis designed for high speed performances.

How's that for a premise?
>>
>>23317681
so, like, cyborg women who run really fast?

Ah yes, the classic "I have a picture I like, but where to post it? Of course! I'll make a thread on /tg/ just so I can post it there!"

>>
It's not bad, but it needs some higher stakes. Like, the whole world economy now revolves around Race Queen championships, as the overpopulated world of 1998 faces crisis after crisis, and only the glamour of the Races lets people forget their dreary lives.

Not a racequeen.
>>
>>23317681
Why isn't it already a thing?
>>
And of course ALL little girls dream of becoming Race Queens when they grow up. For only a small few, these dreams become a reality.

There are always recruiting agents, haunting small town gyms and highschools, looking for prospective right girls with the right aptitudes to be reworked into racing machines. Meanwhile, in the little leagues, girls race against each other with pitiful augmentations cobbled together by their dads in their garages, hoping to catch the eye of one of the agents. Hoping for a contract...and the Big League.
>>
>>23317848
Damn nigga that's cyberpunk.
>>
>>23317734
Damn, Motorball game would be awesome. I didn't really like the arc in the manga because it caused the plot to detratc from the main storyline for a long time, but Motorball is still awesome.
>>
>>23317884
It's cyberpunk, but it's also...well, if you're in the Big League, you're like a supermodel rock-star and an astronaut rolled into one. You're more instantly recognizable than the President (of any country you care to name). You're so bleeding edge that oxygen molecules get cut into two from brushing up against you.

So it's cyberpunk-ish, but it's not the "you're fighting against the MAN from the STREETS" cyberpunk, it's all the glamour of celebrity, turned up to 11.

...also, it just occurred to me, this is a far-future 1990's, right? Can we...can we have the USSR still be standing?
>>

I'd like to add that since OP said "pilot" as well as race car, the competitions could be something like a biathlon where the competitors start off with gliding wings and jet engines to complete an aerial course, then descend to a ground racing circuit, and finish with something else. Like a fight.
>>
>>23318297
of course, a fight.
A big highly destructive catfight, that often kills more spectators than contestants.
>>
>>23318297
Maybe the race girls can work in tandem to a partner aviator, who is completely dedicated to flight. Might add a little intrigue into the races, since most races are lethal to anything that is not cyberdized to all hell

I don't think it should end with a fight as part of the event, as such...just that fights and violence are common throughout the races.

What about scandals? After all, if it's the 90s, it has to be grimdark to some extent; and everything involving the showbiz and competition events has its share of scandals. But if the girls can get away with blowing each other up and occasionally the audience, what can't they get away with?

It sounds a bit like Dirty Pair in that regard, actually; there's some amount of collateral damage that ditziness doesn't excuse.
>>
>>23318436

I think a good source of scandal would be persistent rumors that some of the girls don't have any human parts left at all, they're just AI-controlled robots tooled to a superhuman reaction speed. This is prohibited in the competition rules, and there are regular checks, but you could still fool them. For instance, by having a live brain inside the frame, but shutting it down during races and running the body with an AI processor. Fortunately, being modempunk, AIs require large structures to house. But maybe the body is operated remotely? Etc.

>>23318483
Also the close ties between some countries' military-industrial complex and their racing business: using girls as testbeds for new weaponry and military augs, races thereby turning into displays of power and having a geopolitical impact when some countries are clearly outclassed.

>>
>>23318483

>>
>>23318530

That's a good point. The technology that goes into the girls' frames would definitely become the prototype for cyborg soldiers. I'm seeing a terror balance-type thing where nations are amassing cyborg armies and AI commanders are being installed, but there's just proxy wars being fought and the Cold War hasn't gone hot yet.

Soviets, as usual wouldn't give a shit about making an impression and whenever Ivana competes the media makes a huge fuss of her POSSIBLY BEING A ROBOT!!! Well, if they're in debt that means they don't get to keep the body frame. If they have an off-duty, "civilian" frame they can go on to lead a relatively normal life, but civilian frames are shitty compared to the cutting edge racing ones, obviously. I imagine some would go on to the military, or do intelligence work. Some would become trainers for the minor leagues, raising aspiring hopefuls, like IRL ballet dancers and gymnasts do when they're old and can't compete anymore. More grimdark alternatives would be cybersex clubs, and brains of former racers being hooked up into a huge parallel-processing network to solve complex problems or monitor communications.

The animes are poo generally speaking, Adam Warren's manga is generally silly but in a fun way.

The run between A Plague of Angels and Fatal But Not Serious is probably the best combination of art and story, if you want to pick some up.

Though to give you a general feel for hte tone of the books; FBNS for intance is set at an anime convention filled with overweight men cosplaying in Kei & Yuri's signature bikini outfits.

Then a berzerker virus is dropped on the convention and the local military hardware is hacked and given orders to shoot the dirty pair on site setting up a hilarious scene where one of the local AI gunships saves Yuri because it's such a fanboy of hers. That one also drops some very cool tech into the setting that should be a key feature in any good space opera game, and it also used a Culture style naming convention for naming the AI gunships which most ca/tg/irls will find amusing.

Fuck, someone should story time that story actually, it's like a million /tg/ plothooks and story ideas strung together.

"And Tom, they're nearing the stands right now!"

"Right you are, George. Perennial second-placer Ivana Lagunov is in her usual position, right after American contender Alison Barrera.”

“AND THEY'RE HERE!”

The gleaming red-white-and-blue figure tore around the corner, wheels screaming, hand right near the floor. Right after her came the much larger red Soviet, who ran right over the ridge, gaining air and cutting the corner.

“That's those new super-strong pistons they've put in her legs coming into play, Tom. They've said it cuts down on nearly a kilometre of track length.”

Ivana and Alison were halfway down the stands now, the rest of the pack just turning into the straight, when it happened. It wasn't major, just a little wobble, but it was enough to drop Alison from 325 to 250 in a matter of seconds. She slammed backwards instantly... Right into Ivana.

The Soviet was on top of her in an instant. A shining red fist powered straight through the light-weight American's torso, oil spraying everywhere. Alison collapsed immediately, pumps and cogs scattering everywhere.

The commentators barely had time to draw breath. “Oh my god! That's it! Alison's out!”

But Ivana had been slowed by the collision too, and now the rest of the racers were roaring up behind her.

“And with the American out, it's anyone's game now.”

“I think we're watching a historical race here, George.”

Great Britain's Helen Templeton manages the Eurocorp league's top ranking team, the Auroras, and they say she's being considered to train the national team.

good fucking question. I can't really think of any system off the top of my head where racing has been implemented in any reasonably enjoyable way.
>>
>>23319788

I'm not sure yet. I can envision several options, though. A straightforward RPG where the players are a team of Race Queens in the vein of F-Zero RPG or VeloCITY could work. It could also make for a nice board game where one could customize cheezecake model figurines or something. Or a Shadowrun campaign where the players are the managing team of a Race Queen and are involved in the circuit's politics and secret activities.
>>
>>23319788
Car lesbians could work as a base.

I'm bored, so... onwards!

One of the smaller, light-weight girls ducked under Ivana and slipped ahead.

“That's Korean Yun Ji there in the lead now.”

“You can really see the effects of their limited budget on her, Tom. She's barely more than a skeleton.”

“That's right, but the super light-weight design let's them make up for OH MY GOD.”

The British contestant, Gillian Raine, had tried the same trick, but Ivana wasn't having any of it. The Russian racer dropped an elbow on the green Briton, breaking her shoulder. Knocked back, Gillian recovered at the back of the pack.

“That was quick and brutal, George. She's going to have performance issues for the rest of the race after that.”

“If we look back at the lead, you can see that Mayu Junko, the Japanese contestant, is not happy about her Korean rival's lead.”

Junko was gesturing to Ivana, begging her to let her past. The Soviet racer seemed unusually co-operative, even as she blocked the other racers from going past.

“That's rare. Ivana usually doesn't help anyone.”

Ivana held out her hand, in the start of the slingshot manoeuvre teams usually used together for speed boost. Junko was clearly hesitant.

“I'm not sure I'd want to be taking that offer, Tom.”

“Me too, George.”

But Junko's mind was made up. She slid along the outside and took the Soviet's hand.

It closed like a vice, crushing her fingers. Then, quick as a wink, the heavily armoured Russian girl flung Junko ahead, bouncing her off the pavement right into Yun. They crashed instantly, the bitter rivals entangled and sliding together.

Ivana just ran right over them, turning into the second to last corner.

I'm thinking there could be a card-based maneuver system. Every turn, the pieces move one square on the track. Then you can play cards to modify your movement, accelerate or maneuver to block off or attack other racers. Opponents play other cards to counter or modify your maneuvers.
>>
>>23319788

could you really implement a fast paced future race between buxom cyberbabes with any sort of excitement or sense of danger in a tabletop setting? I am dubious to say the least. Yeah, or Motorball without the ball.
>>
This could also easily be a card game. You play a manager, and you have a deck of cards representing the racers and situations that happen within/outside the race. Sort of like Pimp: The Backhanding.
>>
>>23320047
You could do a shadowrun campaign where you play as the pit crew for a rollergal and you do runs in your off time to pay for better parts to win more races so you get better prize money to fund your runs that you run to get better parts to win more races...

Even better, you have to focus heavily on stealth because if your girl gets caught in a scandal, you're ALL out of a job and getting scrapped for parts.

Actually it is sexier AND cuter than a female athlete. And you don't need actual flesh to imitate effort, it's rule of cool.

>>
The thing is, there's a balancing act here. If you want to maximize performance, you should make the body frame efficient, not sexy. But you still need sponsorship deals, fan support, and glamour, so you compromize performance for sexiness/cuteness. It's a tradeoff.

>>23320494

It'd depend on the manufactoring country or corporation. The Eastern Bloc countries usually do away with femininity if it gets in the way of combat/race performance, as long as they don't break the rules on tonnage and weapon loadouts. Japan and Korea prefer light frames with clearly feminine features, build for speed, with concealed weapons. Europe is middle-of-the-road for the most part, individual corporations playing an influential role in design. US is all about showing off the latest inventions while maintaining sexiness and femininity.

>>23320667
The Motorball is designed to constantly move around as the race goes on. Only way to properly hold on to it and make it less awkward to carry is to insert fingers from both hands into bowling ball like holes in the ball itself. This means that the racer that has the motorball is limited on defending themselves.

The ball must make it around the track one time. Person carrying the ball is the winner. This can mean the race can be one lap or 12 laps depending on how much fighting is done over the ball.

Players are left to their own devices on how to get this ball, but there are no projectile weapons. Chain weapons that extend are OK, as long as they stay attached to the racer's body.

Personally I think it's better if it's left unexplained, it would otherwise break the mystique surrounding smut by rationalizing it.

Well, I have a few suggestions.

* In the late 70s, some mysterious alloy gets discovered in the Tunguska crater. It's some kind of lightweight, durable metal, or maybe it allows room temperature superconductors. Whatever it is, it drives computer technology and materials science into a new level.

* The USSR capitalizes on this, bringing their economy to speed with the West.

* Cyborg technology spreads through prosthetic development. Athletes begin competing with cyborg limbs developed for high-speed running.

* Cue the racing, prosthetics and military industry coming together to create a popular sporting event that simultaneously showcases the wealth and pride of sponsoring nations.

It's concise and "it's sciencemagic I ain't gotta explain tits" enough to work without damaging the atmosphere, I guess.

After further reflexion, I think i'll leave a few post slots empty so that drawfags can post their work before it goes into autosage.

This could be a nice board game, card game, or RPG setting, sure, but there's one other thing I see this setting being very good for.

A quest thread.

>So it's cyberpunk-ish, but it's not the "you're fighting against the MAN from the STREETS" cyberpunk, it's all the glamour of celebrity, turned up to 11.
So it's like Rollerball.

It really bums me out that everyone instantly wants to turn every latest idea /tg/ has into a quest. Besides, I feel like half the fun of this would be some pvp racing.
