Ash falls from the sky. A girl of no more than thirteen huddles under a cloak in a crevice between two charred beams, the bulk of the building they had once supported having come tumbling to the ground. The village surrounding her is little more than rubble, now. The soldiers below have stopped looking for her, and a good thing, too, as she's currently paralyzed with fear and would hardly be able to outrun their horsemen even if she weren't.

But you aren't the little girl.

You are ancient. You've been waiting for this moment for centuries. Freed from your oubliette, you are once again unleashed upon the mortal realm! After all this time, your daemonic Talents have all but atrophied, and everything you'd loved and worked for the last time you were out here has probably faded to dust. That tends to happen in the mortal realm. The one memory that hasn't faded is the knowledge of what it would take to free you: That there be a great outpouring of mortal suffering in the secluded wilderness location where your seal had been cast.

Looking around, you can see that someone has constructed and subsequently burnt down a village here. Some shrill shrieking a few lanes down proves to be coming from some young men nailed to a tree which a few archers in black studded leather are using for target practice. ou can hear a good deal of wailing coming from a nearby cage cart, presumably because some of the women and children locked inside are parents or sibling of the people being shot at. And also possibly because their home was burnt down and they're being abducted. That also tends to be a bad way to start your day. There's a large pile of corpses nearby that's been lit on fire, and several more corpses hanging by their feet from a nearby tree, covered with cuts and bruises. Some of them are still moaning softly, but the blood spilling from the wounds suggests there's little to be done for them now.

Yup. That'll do it.

You are Rabaddon the Mindbreaker, sometimes called the Anomaly, and you are going to kill the fuck out of everything in this-

Oh, fuck, jiggling your head like that made you dizzy. You haven't moved in like four hundred years. Okay, baby steps. You slowly, carefully take in your immediate surroundings, trying not to move too much.

You're standing in the charred up remains of a largish building. An inn? Probably an inn. It's very large and still has enough walls standing to have shielded you from the raiders. This is good, because it seems to be your recollection that most daemons provoke pretty visceral reactions in mortals, and while you can't actually die, being pincushioned while you're weak will still result in you spending a few months moaning in agony while your lungs slowly stitch themselves back together.

You remember one daemon who was basically just an excessively beautiful human woman with little wings and horns and a tail. But then there was the hand daemon, who looked like a snake made out of arms. Plus, there was the guy who was wheels within wheels. Fortunately it doesn't take too much concentration to figure out what you look like.

>Look down. Back up. What's that in your hand? Ashes. But having looked down, you now know what you look like. What do you look like?

Right now all those mortals dying around you looks tasty as your long imprisonment h wiped you clean and you are a blank slank at the momemt, vaguely humanoid with no features whatsoever.
>>
>>23394631

No, that was just me playing with a meme. But the little girl seems to have a lot of support.

The little girl is still hiding. You are not that little girl. You are some other little girl. Efforts to move make you dizzy and weak. You shake your head a bit, clearing your mind a little. You know from past experience that this stage is mercifully short and you should be reasonably capable inside of ten or fifteen minutes, but good gods is it irritating while it lasts. You're regaining strength quick enough, though, and memory along with it. The last time this happened to you, it was because a bunch of daemons from one of the other Courts got sick of you and decided to lock you away. Hypothetically forever, but oubliettes never last.

Courts. Courts are the closest thing daemons have to family, being that you're all born spontaneously, fully formed and typically feeling a lot more capable than you are right now. The dizzy spells are going away. You can mostly move without feeling like you're going to throw up. This is getting better. You're pretty sure you'll be able to muster up the energy to use some of your old powers soon, which is good, because some of those mortal soldiers are poking around the village. Probably they've noticed you.
>>
>Are you from the Court of the Sky? The Court of the Sky governs the sky and the moon, the cold and the weather and the changing of seasons. They have very few friends due to all the toes they step on. The Sky believes it is daemons' rightful place to keep mortals in fear of offending them, and takes rivalries with other daemons extremely seriously. They are austere and vengeful. Daemons don't sow anyway, but if they did, the Court of Sky would make a point of not sowing.

>Are you from the Court of the Sun? The Sky's greatest rival, the Sun governs the sun and fire, heat and light. They are a powerful and charismatic Court, primarily because of their opposition to the much despised Court of the Sky. They believe mortals should be left to their own devices, and find an obsession with helping or harming them to be childish and undignified. They are typically quite magnanimous towards daemons who have wronged them and seek to make amends, but reserve a special fury for the Court of Sky and their allies, who have rejected countless offers of truce.

>Are you from the Court of Water? The Court of Water governs water, rivers, lakes, oceans, and all that live in them. They are allied with the Court of the Sun against the Court of the Sky, but they are not a contentious Court and thus tend to participate in the conflict relatively little, even though Sky freezes the rivers and lakes over most of the world every year. They view themselves as the gods of mortals, but benevolent gods, and they typically forget conflicts with other daemons as soon as they end.

>10/13 Courts coming
>>
>Are you from the Court of Stone? The Court of Stone governs stone, the underdark, mountains, and unharvested ore. They are typically neutral with regards to everything, their domain having been for aeons untouchable by the other Courts. The Courts of Dominion and Wisdom, however, have recently earned the ire of the Court of Stone. The Court of Stone has the same view towards mortals and daemons as they have towards everything else: Endure and outlast everything.

>Are you from the Court of Night? The Court of Night governs night and darkness, stealth and lies, fear and the stars. They are a vicious and contentious Court, and as such are often in conflict with other Courts. Their shared enemy in the Court of the Sun has made Night an uneasy ally with the Sky. Members of the Court of the Night often like to torment mortals for fun, and think much the same about other daemons.

>Are you from the Court of Decay? The Court of Decay governs decay and the undead, corruption and pestilence. They are bitter enemies with the Court of Nature, and allies with the Court of the Sky, which makes them enemies of the Court of the Sun (politics!). Decay see mortals as a food source. The Court of Decay has a policy of not troubling other daemons unless they're troubled by them, but they're also paranoid and sometimes lash out pre-emptively at imagined threats.

>Are you from the Court of Nature? The Court of Nature governs plants and animals, life and growth. Water steps on their toes with control over much sea life, but despite the tensions between Water and Nature, Nature's spite for Sky, which withers some plants while flooding others, and Decay, which seeks to end all that Nature is, binds Nature together with Water and Sun against Sky, Decay, and Night. The Court of Nature is playful but vicious, and mortals may walk away from their games cursed, blessed, or dead. Nature takes other daemons more seriously, and are savage in defending their holdings.
>>
>Are you from the Court of Fortune? The Court of Fortune governs luck and fate. An ancient and anarchic Court, Fortune has little in the way of unified policy. They are almost universally playful and mischievous, however.

>Are you from the Court of Souls? The Court of Souls governs dreams, prophecy, emotion, will, and magic. That all daemons use a fair amount of magic means that the Court of Souls really only governs magic use among mortals, and even then there is little they can do to stop other Courts from handing out magical secrets without their approval, so they govern magic mostly in name only. Unlike most Courts, the Court of Souls has a unified opinion towards the Court of Fortune, specifically: Spite. Fortune trespasses and mucks with Souls' governance over prophecy. Night also governs fear, one of the most powerful emotions, which brings the Court of Souls into alliance with Sun, Water, and Nature against them. As a gesture of goodwill, these three Courts do not give magic to mortals, and the Court of Sun even goes so far as to discourage its practice entirely. The Court of Souls sees mortals as acolytes, demanding their respect and worship, and exchange giving them some limited magical power or protection. The Court of Souls is impulsive and proud, and thus ends up in fights with other daemons a lot. They also hold grudges for nigh-unto eternity, which means their war with the Courts of Night, Sky, Decay, and Fortune are likely going to end only when one side or the other is destroyed entirely.

>5/13 Courts coming
>>
>Are you from the Court of Blood? The Court of Blood governs blood, families, and natural health and healing. Like Strife, they were a minor Court before the rise of Dominion lifted them up, and as such they are allied with Dominion and oppose both of the old alliances headed by Sun and Sky. The Court of Blood view mortals as pets, bordering on children, and would typically rather not fight with other daemons. When provoked, however, they are exactly as willing as any other to defend themselves. Other daemons sometimes view their pacifism as unreliability, and it's not without point. If ever there were a Court you could not count on for backup when it really mattered, it would be Blood. Unless, of course, you're actually in the Court of Blood, in which case they'll back you come Hell or high water even if you are clearly the one at fault.

>Are you from the Court of Wisdom? The Court of Wisdom governs knowledge, discovery, and sapience. Some, especially the Court of Souls, call them the Court of Knowledge and claim wisdom for themselves. Wisdom was put into power by Dominion, like Strife and Blood, and, also like Strife and Blood, is thus allied with Dominion against the alliances of Sun and Sky. Wisdom sees mortals closest to children of all the Courts, believing that in time they will become like unto daemons themselves, capable of great magical power and immortality. This is sometimes viewed as a sort of daemonic heresy by other Courts, including Dominion, so Wisdom does not put much effort into making this vision a reality, though most of its membership (especially the leadership) firmly believe that it will eventually happen anyway. Wisdom prefers to at least attempt diplomacy before fighting with other daemons, but is more than willing to fight if the cost of peace is too high. They are also more willing than most to act with enemies, especially getting involved in fights between the alliances of Sun and Sky, if it serves their agenda.
>>
>>23394727

>By 5/13 I meant 4/13

>Are you from the Court of Dominion? The Court of Dominion governs civilization, law, bureaucracy, and control. They are the youngest of the major Courts, but their meteoric rise to power has put Wisdom, Strife, and Blood into power as well, the vast mortal societies they support expanding the influence of all three significantly. Dominion has thus become the head of a third alliance, upsetting the balance between Sun and Sky. Though early on Sun and Sky thought of Dominion as a minor Court with delusions of grandeur, it has become obvious in recent centuries that the Court of Dominion and their allies are a force to be reckoned with. Dominion is easily the most hierarchical of all the Courts, commanding the absolute loyalty of all its members and punishing those who break ranks swiftly and severely. Dominion uses mortals like tools, cogs in a machine, and discards them when their purpose is served. Its opinion on daemons, especially daemon of other Courts, is remarkably similar.

>>
Rabaddon the Mindbreaker, trickster spirit, called the Anomaly mostly because you look mortal. It's not until they talk to you that people figure out you're a daemon, and mortals typically don't figure it out even then. After all, spirits and gods are just legends, right?

Those soldiers are getting closer, though. You pull yourself up carefully, half because you don't want to black out if a dizzy spell hits (it doesn't) and half because you don't want to make much noise. Until you get some proper Talent powers going, you won't be able to fight a dozen-odd soldiers, and your appearance means you'll probably be chucked into that cage if you're caught.

Speaking of Talents, you have access to three. One, your most powerful, is one of the three inherent to the Court of Fortune: Glamour, Oneiromancy, and Obfuscation.

>Which of these three talents is your strongest?

>Feel free to ask for elaboration if you don't know what these words mean. They're intentionally selected from archaic/obscure English wherever possible.
>>
>>23394886

Please elaborate on all three of them. Could you include one example, if possible?
>>
>>23394886
Obfuscation.
We're remarkably direct about our intent. No time for dream-manipulation (unless that's something you can do, you know, when people aren't sleeping) and glamours are too easily shattered.

Is reality truly such that a simple lie cannot bend it, warp it?
>>
Oneiromancy is Divination Through Dreams. Glamour tends to be some form of large illusion, thar distracts people, and Obfuscation means to.confuse so, I assume Confuse Ray.
>>
>>23394897

Glamour is illusion magic, primarily. It is the magic of deceiving the senses. You can use it to make yourself look like someone or something else and to make things appear to be there which are not. You can't use it to make things not appear to be there which are, however, which brings us to...

Obfuscation. Obfuscation allows you to make things, principally yourself, harder to notice. Ultimately, this can mean turning invisible, but it also allows you to use a None Of My Business Field. Doing something dramatic will usually cause the Talent to fail unless you're very good at it.

Oneiromancy is dream magic. You can use it to invade dreams to send messages or imprison the dream selves of mortals or daemons, thus trapping them in a coma. Worth noting that mortals are often much stronger in dreams than they are in reality, but deamons don't receive any similar power boost. Oneiromancy can also be used to induce prophetic visions in mortals, but not in daemons.
>>
>>23394941
obfuscation sounds good.
>>
Glamour seems like the most useful.
>>
Rolled 10

Sorry, dice ain't working for some reason...
>>
obfuscation would come in really handy right about now and naturally looking like a little girl, wouldn't we have needed to work more on obfuscation just to keep the annoying interactions with humans down?
>>
Your main Talent is Obfuscation, the power to avoid notice.

Your secondary Talent can either be one of the others from the Fortune set, or it can be from one of the allied Courts. Fortune doesn't really have allies, but they are generally well-liked by the Courts of Nature and Night (and only a Court with no unified policy could pull an ally each from the alliances of Sun and Sky).

From Nature you can learn Animalism, the power to command or awaken beasts, transform into animal form yourself, and transform others into semi-bestial forms, including transforming those who are already beasts into shapes which are...Enhanced, shall we say?

From Nature you can also learn Witchcraft, the power to speak to trees and plants. You can also command them, but this comes down to "grow poison apples for me" and next year they've grown poison apples for you; trees can't move. Witchcraft also includes herbalism.

From the Court of Night you can learn Tenebriety, which is the power to command shadows, to conceal yourself or to rise up and strangle your enemies.

From the Court of Night you can also learn Majesty, the power to compel others with voice and appearance, helplessly enslaving mortals or even daemons to your will, though the effects tend to wear off when they can no longer see or hear you.

Or you could learn Glamour or Oneiromancy from your home Court.
>>
Rolled 100

Tenebriety sounds like it meshes well with obfuscation
>>
>>23395088
>Tenebriety

That should work out really well with our first specialty.
>>
Your second Talent is Tenebriety, the command over shadows and darkness.

Your final Talent comes from your House. Houses are sub-divisions of Courts, or sometimes exist independent of any Court, in which case they're sometimes called Minor Courts. There are a dozen or more House in every Court, so the Talent granted by your House could be practically anything. Make a suggestion, and if it maps to an existing Talent, we'll take that. If not, I'll make up a new one to cover it.

Alternatively, you could just take one of those Talents from your Court or an allied Court that you skipped earlier.

You are Rabaddon the Mindcrusher, the Anomaly, and probably you have a few more titles you've forgotten. They do tend to build up after a while. You are a trickster spirit from the Court of Fortune and also the little girl. Your primary Talent is Obfuscation, your other Talents are Tenebriety and Dementation.

You're also pretty sure you can walk without blacking out, and a few test steps shows that indeed, you are again mobile. The soldiers are drawing near, however, and they are definitely poking around the rubble. "I'm sure I heard something," one of them says.

"Probably just some house collapsing, these savages' mud huts are like to do that when you set them on fire," says another.

"Keep searching," what appears to be their captain says, "we take no chances. If any of these wretches were to escape, it would be our quarry."

Well, looks like you're going to have to do something about these fellows soon enough. Your Talents return to you slowly and erratically. Choose three powers from the following list (including more than one from a single Talent, if you wish):

Unnoticed (Obfuscation): Others do not notice you unless you call attention to yourself or do something especially dramatic. Only works while motionless.

Invisible (Obfuscation): You can turn completely invisible, but your shadow can still be seen and you can still make noise. Only works while motionless.

Unimportant (Obfuscation): If you will it, people forget the details of interaction with you a few moments after you've gone.

Shadow Form (Tenebriety): You can turn your body into shadows.

Shadow Steel (Tenebriety): You can make shadows solid. Does little but reinforce walls if you can't make shadows pop off the walls.

Delusion (Dementation): Cause someone to believe a single thing despite all evidence to the contrary.

Depression (Dementation): Crush someone's morale, driving the very will to live out of them.

You are now a shadow of a little girl. You can pop up off the wall if you want, but you can't actually touch anything. You're incorporeal.

You're then able to find the source of that quivering that's been bugging you since you woke up. Hiding on what's left of the second floor is another little girl. She's still paralyzed and motionless.

If you scroll up and read the description of the Courts, you'll notice that a lot of them are totally on board with making mortals happy despite being 100% comprised of daemons (best example of this is the Court of Wisdom). Because we're using the archaic, pre-Christian definition of "daemon" meaning "any magical spirit," which is why I'm spelling it funny.

You can move. Shadow Form is Tenebriety, not Obfuscation, so it doesn't come with the usual "must remain motionless" caveat.

Why 'directly' control the girl? Just hang out in her shadow, whisper things only she can hear, make her think she's gained magic powers and we're part of her.

See where it goes. I suspect minds will be broken.

We're trickster daemon now, right? We make an offer to the little girl; we stop the guards finding and killing her, she becomes our first minion. Judging from the description of court of knowledge, more minions/worshippers of a court seems to make that court more powerful.

Helping the little girl (for now, at least) seems to be a popular course of action.

You hide yourself within the girl's shadow. You don't have the speed to match her movements perfectly, but so long as she doesn't stop and examine her shadow intently you should be okay for a while. And if she does stop and examine her shadow intently, you break out the Obfuscation. It's foolproof.

"We have to be quiet or they'll find us," you whisper, and she gasps softly, looking over her shoulder to try and find the source of your voice.

"What was that?" one of the guards down below says, "I'm sure I heard something this time."

"Then check it out," the impatient officer says, "and hurry. The sooner we get back to Golgoth the sooner I can get a drink of something decent."
>>
>>23396287

Those guards have sharp hearing.

Do we know why they're skulking about for things?
>>
>>23396287

No. We need to be shadows
>>
>>23396287
If it looks like he'll find us, leave our shadow and use delusion on him to tell him that we aren't actually there.
>>
>>23396223
Whoops, meant Dominion, not Knowledge.

>>23396287
I stick to the we make her an offer idea. Something like "I told you to be quiet; now we don't have much time. Let's keep this short and simple I'll keep you alive in exchange for a request, one I can make later at any time. Here, first one's free."

Then obfuscate the girl to the guard can't find her.
>>
>>23396287
Can we use our shadow form to cover her from view, leaving only darkness between those beams?
>>
>>23396308

Nope. You've been out of the game for at least three hundred years (you lost count after the second century but you know it's been a while after that), so you don't really have any idea what's up with anything mortal-related. This village wasn't even here when you were imprisoned.

>>23396339

The little girl swallows and nods her head, keeping still. One of the guards starts poking around with his halberd inside the inn, trying to dislodge anything that might be hiding up on the second floor. "There's nothing in here," you say, and the guard immediately turns around and leaves.

"Can't find anything," he mumbles begrudgingly.

"Then let's get out of here," the captain says. They begin heading back towards the cage carts and the captain barks an order to the archers to just slit the throats of anyone they haven't already hit, as it's time to move out. This causes more wailing from the cage cart, which the guards use the butts of their halberds to silence in a hurry.
>>
>>23396413
Well, is there anybody left who might get killed because of that order?
>>
>>23396413
Seeing as we've been out of it for so long, let's see if we can get any useful information out of the girl.
>>
>>23396413
We will make this girl into a GOD for the masses and then we will simply leave and watch it all burn.
>>
>>23396378

No. There are other Tenebriety powers that do that.

>>23396223
>>23396375

The power of the Courts is determined mostly by the influence the things they govern have in the world, and individual daemons are likewise tied to concepts in an arbitrary and magical way. As a daemon of Fortune, you aren't really any specific concept so much as you're part of a massive collective of thousands of daemons who are collectively fate and destiny and junk.

So the rise of mortals has made things like massive extended families and military campaigns and bureaucracies waaaaaay more common, which has in turn made the Courts of Blood, Strife, and Dominion far more powerful. Further, since Courts encourage the growth of their aspects for obvious reasons, Dominion's encouraging the growth of empires has likewise facilitated the growth of the Courts of Blood, Strife, and Wisdom/Knowledge.

Remember both and let it drive you from this day on.

And I will help you achieve vengeance so great it will shatter this world.
>>
Wait until all is quiet, then.

"Everything will be alright now. There's nothing to be afraid of, anymore."

Pretend to be her or part of her. If prompted, extol independence; she doesn't need anyone else, and surviving is proof she was stronger.
>>
>>23396501
The real question is, where do daemons come from?

Is there a WARP?! BWAHAHAHA!

What about human Wizards?
>>
>>23396440

Well, seeing as how all of them have been nailed to a tree to begin with, they'll all be invalids and seeing as how they're currently in a torched village, odds are they'd die just the same even if someone rescued them, unless that someone also took care of them for the rest of their lives. But there are people who haven't been shot with arrows yet who are about to get their throats slit, yes.

We're a daemon, not a fussy mother. Leave the girl to sit down and bear it; we've probably seen so much ancient daemonic torture through our lifespan that a few people nailed to a tree is kinda like having garden gnomes, only noiser.

No, we whisper promises of revenge and offers of our companionship into her ear. We want her to lead us to this "Golgoth" so we can return the favour for all the pain and suffering that freed us. Ideally, with more pain and suffering. This girl shouldn't be our pet, bur our harbinger.

>>
>>23396532

Nature abhors a vacuum. And we're talking about nature as an abstract concept and not Nature, the Court that hypothetically embodies that concept. So daemons are spontaneously generated whenever a concept without an existing daemon is created. The leader of the Court of Dominion, for example, was born the first time laws were written down by a king.

>>23396594

A bit. Your power is mostly expanded by their being more stuff in the cosmos, though. The more things there are that could go right or wrong by chance, the more powerful the Court of Fortune becomes. Of course, since the concept of Fortune isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and even weakening the Court, let alone destroying it, is practically impossible, the Court doesn't have to bother with politics. When the Sky threatens to snuff out the Sun, that's a thing they can actually do. When Wisdom says he'll snuff out Fortune, Fortune laughs.

>>23396701

At start, I had literally zero input from any players, so I went with what the reaction of the average daemon to mortal suffering would be: Indifference. Regardless, the voice of the narrator isn't the voice of Rabaddon. The premise of the quest does not involve any obligation to be good, evil, or anything else.

Now that I have a bit better idea of what our court does, I say we get some information out of the girl of what's going on in the world (though seeing as she's just a little girl, not sure how much info we'll get), ask her name, then proceed to work out how to gain more powers. Once we're more powerful we should teach her some magic just to see what she does with it.

>>23397146

The rise in daemon powers is typically something measured in, at minimum, decades. Fortunately, you aren't back to full power yet. Most advancement will come through regaining powers you already had before you were imprisoned.

There's also Quickening. If you smack a daemon around, you can steal a bunch of raw power from them. A lot of power is lost in the transfer, though, so it's typically seen as dishonorable. Unless you quickened a daemon from a Court the guy you're talking to is enemies with. Then it's okay.

>>
>>23397406
This line of thought, but a bit less blunt. She doesn't seem to have a disposition for vengeance yet; we need to draw it out of her. Let's get her to search for her family, see if we can't stir up some hateful feelings.

"That's horrible, they shouldn't be able to get away with that. But you're okay aren't you? So I guess that means you're not cursed. Probably shouldn't stay here though, let's look to see if anyone else is around."

Need to use careful language when playing the manipulator. Have to let the person you're talking to reach the conclusion themself.

"It doesn't matter now. Let's find food and water, and somewhere to rest."
>>
>>23397397

Oh, as to the second question: Well of course you can. Assuming you want to interact with the mortal world at all (and mortals are all over the place these days), then minions are going to be helpful.

>>23397406

"It doesn't matter now, Mari," you say, "we'll get through this, and together, we'll make them pay for it."

Mari glances towards the pile of burnt corpses, the dead torture victims hanging from the big tree in the middle of what was once her village, the young men nailed to the trees at the edge. "Yeah," she says softly, before rising from her hiding spot to jump down into the inn below. You mimic her movements as best you can. Fortunately this place is pretty shadowy already, dusk approaching, and so it's nigh-impossible to notice when you can't keep up.

"What's a Golgothan?" you ask, as Mari begins walking towards the forest.

"The people from Golgoth," she says, "if you can call them people. They were always cruel, even before that king of theirs took over. They call him the Westerling King now, because he's even marched out of Golgoth into other countries. They say his armies will come here someday, armies with ten thousand men and horses." She looks over her shoulder back towards the village. "I guess a hundred was enough for us, though."

>>
>>23397571

>>
>>23397644
It would be but we ought to look at getting our own power back first. Interacting with mortals is all fun and games but we're still reeling from being in the oubliette. We need to stop and think about what we can do to get our powers back. We got freed by a huge chunk of suffering and agony, but that seems to be to do with the seal and not us personally.

We could try getting Mari to mercy-kill anyone left alive and see if the bloodshed does anything for us. "These poor people... Is there nothing we can do but walk away from them?"
>>
>>23397689
I'll second this. Especially any currency that can be found.
>>
>>23397728
Delusion will get us enough currency if used right.
We just need water/food.
>>
>>23397726
Oh, I'm not saying we should teach her now, I'm just curious if it's possible to teach her it once we've become a bit more powerful.
>>
>>23397760
Why would we use delusion to get currency instead of using it to get whatever we need the money for?
>>
>>23397843
Then why get currency at all?
>>
>>23397644

The more delusions you have going at once, the harder they are to maintain. You can Delusion more than one person, but not for long, and three would stretch your abilities to the breaking point. Four is right out.

>>23397726

Well, you know how your own powers work. Regaining powers is a function of time and exercise, which comes out to going on adventures, basically. There's a bunch of places in my notes where it says "spit out new powers for known Talents now" and a couple of places where it says "offer Talent X in exchange for Y now." Where the Y is typically beating up another daemon.
>>
>>23397832

You can teach magic to mortals, although it'll make the Court of Souls and their allies pissy with you. It takes a really long time, though.
>>
>>23397872
Wait. Delusion is something you have to keep active? I just thought you told someone something and they just believe you no matter how little sense it makes.
>>
>>23397902

Yes, you have to keep it active. If you could spit out delusions endlessly, you'd never need another power from any Talent to get anything done.
>>
>>23397892
nah, that's too much trouble. we should do our best to locate some source of power our girl can use and then adventure to go get that.
>>
>>23397902
For them to keep believing it, yes.
>>
>>23397872
Ask Mari if there are any places of interest in the area that they could go to after she scrounges up supplies.

>>23397892
Do we know how long it would take? Or does it depend on the spell?
>>
>>23397892
Thought there'd be a catch. Also thirding looking for supplies.

As for teaching Mari magic, it's probably best we don't try for now. Wait until we have some more active spells to teach her. We don't want to teach our chief minion spells that are good for hiding and running away or she'll use them to do that instead of seek vengeance. We'd need to teach her something more active and offensive so she's more likely to pursue vengeance.

TwirledMustache, since we know our own powers, did we originally have an ability to inflict bad luck on people? Like we curse them with bad luck and they start slipping on banana peels and stabbing themselves in the eye with spoons or something. We trickster; we'd find it hilarious and it'd be perfect to teach Mari.
>>
>>23397993

"There's food in the forest," Mari says when you recommend she head back into the village. "I don't want to go back," she says further.

In the forest, she begins finding snares with rabbits caught on them. Her father's, presumably.

"Is there anything nearby here?" you ask Mari.

"There's another village up the road," she says, "but the Golgothans are on the road now and I don't want to go there. And then there's Gareth's Grove. Gareth is the village guardian, he keeps...Well, he was supposed to keep us safe."

"Is that where we're going?" you ask.

"Yes," she says.

"Why?" you ask.

"I dunno. To ask where the Hell he's been, I guess."

While she gathers up the rabbits, you notice that one of them has four eyes, an extra two clustered next to the normal one on the right side. They look kind of melted together, sickened and unnatural. You are almost positive that rabbits are not supposed to have six eyes.
>>
>>23398073
Is there something wrong with that Rabbit...?
>>
>>23398073
"So... Are rabbits supposed to look like that?"
>>
>>23398073
Ask about the sick looking rabbit.
>>
>>23398073

four* eyes

>>23398063

Yes. Cursing people is a power all daemons learn once they're strong enough, which you were. It should come back to you, and hopefully sooner rather than later.
>>
>>23398100

"It's nothing," Mari says hastily when you ask about the rabbit, and immediately pulls out a hunting knife to hack out the extra eyes, "it just happens sometimes."
>>

>>
>>23398241
>>23398218
We don't fucking know the planet.
Or what's been happening for the last 300 years.
This could be natural for all we know.
>>
>>23398177

You weren't so powerful that you could run a Court yourself even if you got lucky, but you were pretty far up there. Most daemons were weaker than you.

Your memories are pretty vague, big picture stuff right now. Emotions and things that were always there. Specific events are pretty elusive. That said, you do remember getting a coterie of daemons from Wisdom and Dominion angry at you. They were probably the guys who stuck you in the oubliette.

Man. Five thousand years ago and Wisdom and Dominion were minor Courts with a deluded daemon born practically yesterday, and now they're putting high-tier Fortune daemons under over personal squabbles. Hopefully someone's figured out how to contain those bastards while you were out, they were starting to get out of control.
>>
>>23398218

"Sometimes it does," she says, tying the rabbit to her belt and heading towards the next snare on the other side of the hill.

>>23398197

You do not.

>>23398197

You do not. In fact, you didn't know how to do that. If this is a daemonic Talent, it's either Fleshshaping or *really* sloppy Animalism (or an obscure House Talent). You didn't know Fleshshaping and if you ever learned Animalism, it was one of your later Talents, long after you stopped making amateur hour mistakes.

>>23398276

Well, you as in "you, the players" don't know, but "you, the daemon" have been here for like four thousand years. Rabbits are just rabbits, unless something happened in the past ~400 years to change that.
>>
>>23398279
So, Dominion seems like it'd be involved with this king punk. We recognize his name, or his kingdom's name? What,of we think about them both backwards? Also, get back to us on Mari's response to >>23398218.
>>
>>23398465

Not really. This place was barely settled last time you were awake.
>>
>>23398417

Well something is definitely up with that six-eyed rabbit but we don't seem to know anything about it other than it has six eyes which is not all that interesting, especially since Mari doesn't care about it.

We should ask Mari questions about herself though. She's thirteen and hacking extra eyes out of a rabbit like it ain't no thing, her village just got torched to cinders and her "shadow" is talking back to her but she doesn't seem to give much of a shit. Something ain't right with this girl.
>>
>>23398465
Or do demons not do that "acctually was name BACKWARDS" horseshit in this universe?
>>
>>23398073
"Who is this Gareth, and why does he live in the forest?"

In before he's a druid and tries to smite the hell out of us, recognising what we actually are. Don't listen to him, Mari, we're her to protect you.

>>

>>
>>23398562

>>
>>23398562

Maybe start with some personal questions; how much her dad taught her about hunting, what regular life in the village was like. We get info on her and keep her mind on the brutal deaths of everyone and keep slipping in little side-comments about how something needs to be done about those Golgothians. We've been out of the game for a few hundred years, worrying about a six eyed rabbit is one thing but we've got a mission to get our shit together and Mari is our fortune-blessed minion. We need to find out what use we can put her to and how we can start getting our A-game on.

I can basically agree with this. As an agent of fortune, it's in our nature to be whimsical, and becoming the sword and shield of a small girl with severe PTSD and a grudge against an evil empire seems like a pretty good way to fulfill that obligation. Maybe she'll even grow to like using the power we can provide.
>>
WE XOM NOW
>>
>>23398560
Can we do reverse curses? Like, can we bless people?
>>
>>23398751

We'd need to find one first. Besides, this mortal is now suddenly more interesting, never mind that she's blessed by good fortune. Her village is burned to a husk on the orders of a mad king who wants every child dead, and an ancient daemon shows up at just the right time to save her ass from being murdered. That's a one-in-a-million chance; and we're a fortune daemon, we govern luck and fate. We intentionally meddled with her fate, yes, but what are the odds that a village would be built directly on top of a fortune demon's ancient seal?

This girl's luck and fate, at the very least, should appeal to our whimsical nature. The fact that there's more to her than we can perceive should seal the deal; we must make her our chief minion.
>>
>>23398915

Or at least, that's how I see it.
>>
>>23398930
I assume that if we could inflict bad luck on people, we could inflict good luck too. Or maybe it's almost eldritch in nature and our very whim is what counts as luck. By deciding to help Mari and not leaving her to die, we granted her good luck.

Hell no. If they're going to be coy they're at least going to use a proper anagram, and most of them are smart enough to use actual aliases for things.

>>23398582

"Gareth's the spirit of the woods," Mari says, "this is just his home. I guess he likes it here." She pauses a moment, and then says "Dad says he thinks Gareth left a long time ago, and the other villagers just don't want to believe it. He says...Well, said, that if Gareth were here he'd be doing something about all the raids. I guess he's probably right. I don't know where else to go," she says, finally tearing up a little on the last sentence.

>>23398659

She wipes her eyes and composes herself a bit. "I know how to set snares and stuff," she says, "and I clean animals and cook them. But I just barely started learning how to use a bow and I don't have one of my own yet. The Golgothans snapped my dad's when..." she trails off, and then begins tearing up again, leaning against a tree for a moment and trying to keep herself together.

"Someone needs to stop these Golgothans," you say.

"Dad always used to say that if Destos and Arkas couldn't stop them, it would take a miracle. And Destos and Arkas are already completely conquered, is what the Deneen and his wife say, have been for years," Mari says. "No one can stop Golgoth." She stops and stares for a moment. "Not anymore, no one can." She kicks at a nearby rock in fury, sending it flying a solid ten feet, and half-shouts "there's no miracles coming!"
>>
>>23399080

"And throw shadowy fireballs."

"I'm sure we'll find somewhere to go, and someone who can stop Golgoth. I don't know about miracles, or much of anything yet. But I woke up just in time to keep those guards from finding you. Something along these lines. Too sinister, though, she's gonna think something is up.
>>
>>23399231
This is the best suggestion.

If she starts thinking we don't sound like her shadow, we can tell her that of course we're her shadow - in the places she feels love, we feel hate. Where she is warm, we are cold. Where she is weak, we are strong. And terrifying.

Mari doesn't respond as she reaches what is probably Gareth's Grove. "I don't know how Gareth feels about shadows," she says before stepping in, "but I don't see how I can leave you behind. Just be quiet for a bit, alright?" And then she steps inside, using her dagger to inscribe some symbols in the ground. Nothing you recognize, but if this is a daemon of a single grove then he has to be some weak little hedge daemon that you probably wouldn't need to concern yourself with ordinarily.

Regardless, after completing her little ritual, informing the grove that her village has been destroyed and she needs help, and waiting for a solid fifteen minutes in the center of the grove, Mari gives up and leaves. "I don't know what I was expecting," she says, "he's never shown up before."

You're beginning to remember more of the details of Dominion's expansion, now. His modus operandi was to have daemon hit squads run around ousting local daemons from the area before he moved in to invade. It's weird that he'd direct his minions against a village, since villages are also a part of his domain, but maybe they weren't bureaucratic enough and they were getting greedy? Or, Hell, maybe Golgoth went nuts on its own and the Court of Dominion just didn't care enough to stop them. They are allies with Strife.

"I need a bow," Mari says after a few moments walking in silence. You're not even sure where to anymore. You're not sure Mari knows, either. "And...Those Golgothan soldiers took my younger brother. We need to go after them. Do you know any way we could kill that many, or drive them off?"

"What are you asking me to do?" she asks.
>>
>>23400313
"Tell them what you want them to believe. My power lies in, well, the power of lies.

I can also hide you from prying eyes. People will not notice you if you do not wish it."

Is there a way to let her communicate with us telepathically? It would certainly help, otherwise she has to announce when she wants to be hidden.

We should be able to free him pretty easily, if that is what we want. Do we?

>>23400382
That conversation was stalling, yes. I was hoping we'd get something interesting out of the grove though.

"There's plenty of ways to kill a man, but that won't do you and your brother any favours. Golgoth may simply hunt you both for the crime, as men are tend to do. Best we whisk him free of Golgoth's grasp, like a shadow slipping through their fingers."

IE, we dementia the guards into opening his cage/removing his bonds, and obfuscate/invisible him out of there.
>>
>>23400516
Whoops forgot to remove the dice.
>>
>>23400503

No, you can't communicate with her telepathically with the Talents you have right now.

>>
>>23400502
>"What are you asking me to do?" she asks.
"To stay alive. Then we need to find our where they're bringing your brother."
>>
>>23400689

"Okay. They'll still be keeping him in that cage with the rest, won't they?" Mari says. "That cart will have to follow the roads...Deneen will know where they're headed but he won't be coming back to the village for months and anyway he'll probably hear it's been destroyed and go someplace else instead. Deneen hears everything, he'll probably know about it by this time next week even if he's halfway across Dorrik."
>>
>>23400768
"Deneen?"

"A group that large does not move quickly, or without notice. We can follow them."

>>
>>23400880
We can just get shit done ourselves and let her wait somewhere. It's not like we have to keep mimicking her actual shadow, seeing as she already called that.

>"A group that large does not move quickly, or without notice. We can follow them."
>>
>>23401008

"Okay," Mari says.

While it is indeed true that the group moves slow, they already have a headstart on you by over an hour. By the time you and Mari catch up, night has already fallen. Mari climbs a tree every few minutes to try and get a better look, and before long she can see smoke from their campfires trailing up into the distance.

"That's got to be them," Mari says, "merchants don't travel in numbers that big. Now what?"

>>23401043
We need to use delusion to turn the guards against each other. If we can find two who who're having an argument then we can turn it into a fight by making one believe the other has seriously slighted him and needs to suffer retribution. Once people start getting involved, just pass the delusion from one person to another so they all start fighting. If we can maintain multiple delusions all the better. Start a big enough round of infighting and we can probably get them to kill each other with no work.
>>
>>23401099
No fun. We're sticking right to her. If anything goes wrong, it's her head anyway. We just go have fun with something else.
>>
>>23401144
No point in killing them all.
It'll just attract attention.
Find the leader, make him believe he has to take the child out of the camp and execute him.
Release the delusion, then make him want to kill himself.
Take the child and leave.
>>
>>23401174
this seems like a solid plan
>>
>>23401174
Let's go with this
>>
>>23401072

"He's seven years old," Mari says, "skinny, with blonde hair." The description she's given is fairly similar to her own, so you might have guessed just from family resemblance, but the age is a bonus.
>>
>>23401174
Attracting attention was the point, but your idea outclasses mine easily.
>>
>>23401201
>>23401174

Then we'll have some distractions to help us too.

>>23401231
Yeah, but I doubt he would be able to head out alone in that case.

"Hai guyz, I'll just take these 10+ lads and be off with them."
>>
>>23401174
Killing them all sends a strong message.

OP, how many targets can we affect with delusions at once? We might be able to waltz through the camp and make all the guards kill themselves as they come at us in groups of 4-5.
>>
>>23401284
3 at most for several seconds.
We're REALLY shit at power.
>>
>>23401284

Two, maybe three, but it will wear you out fast to fire off lots of delusions in short order, and even faster if you try to maintain several.
>>
>>23401272
Well, we'll see how many there are and whatnot.
Scouting and shit.
>>
>>23401284
we can kill them later. even just a mysterious suicide of their leader probably leaves them a little bit troubled.
>>
>>23401304
>>23401310

>>23401433
She will be the one to command it. We're just her weapon.

Okay, make the leader order the prisoners taken into the woods. Then we can ambush them.
>>

How are we supposed to ambush anybody? The girl has a dagger, and we're a weak spirit with skills that aren't optimal for combat situations?
>>
>>23401433
an addendum to
>>23401174

We could make the leader think Mari is his god and get her to order him to kill himself.
>>
>>23401174

You tell Mari to wait for you, and then slip away. In the dark of the night, she doesn't even notice you're gone. The guards' torches will make your presence obvious, but with your powers of Obfuscation you're able to make the inexplicable sillhouette of a little girl on the ground go completely unnoticed. If these primitive screwheads had cameras, though, this would show up on /x/ *for sure*.

The captain has already had his tent set up. It's not spectacularly large, but you're not sure if that means the captain isn't especially high-ranked or Golgoth just isn't super-advanced.

"You have to bring the boy Leson out of the camp and execute him, immediately," you say. The captain immediately looks uncomfortable. He glances aside, then gets up and begins pacing about the small tent, knocking over a pot of stew in the process. Swearing, he steps outside his tent and shouts at a soldier to clean up the mess, then storms off towards the cage cart.

The guards glance curiously at one another, but do not attempt the captain as he approaches. "Which one of you is Leson?" he asks. The prisoners are silent. "Answer me!" the captain shouts, drawing his sword and brandishing it at them.

"It's him," one of the women jerks her head (her hands being manacled) towards a boy of about the right age and appearance, "that's Leson," she says.

"Bring me that boy," the captain says to the guards.

"Captain, it's orders of the general that no one touch any of the children until the king's expected them," one of the guard says.

"Let me worry about the general!" the captain says, "bring me that boy, soldier, or I'll behead you now for disobeying an officer!"

"Of course, captain," the guard says, cowed, and goes to unlock Leson's chains.

The captain grabs Leson roughly by the arm and begins leading him out of the camp, drawing strange looks from those nearby, but none can work up the courage to stop and challenge him until he's already past.

>cont.
>>
>>23401509
That's the point. One by one, make the guards believe they heard something nearby that they have to investigate, and then make them kill themselves.

Then make the leader walk into the middle of their camp, call everyones attention, and kill himself in a brutal fashion.
>>
i think we're over the bump limit. new thread time?
>>
>>23401603

The captain brings Leson to the tree where Mari is hiding, where you encounter something you had not counted on: A guard from the camp, a patrol no doubt, who's lying on the ground with blood trailing out of his mouth, his dead hands clutching at his throat. There's no visible wounds on his body, however.

The captain gapes when he sees the body, but then immediately begins walking on, thinking that no doubt this is only the first sign of the terrible doom this boy will bring upon them. Clearly he is the cursed one and the king will thank him for his swift, decisive action.

Releasing the captain from the delusion will result in him acting of his own volition, which might end up being "well, I've come this far, may as well hack the kid's head off anyway." You've only got a few seconds to make a decision as to what the next Delusion you inflict will be. What will you make him believe next?

"Wait for message from god" supporters are apparently tardy to voting, so we're going with this.

As you approach the tree, you release the delusion. The captain's steps slow slightly as he begins to realize that he's probably made a terrible mistake bringing the boy out of the camp, but would it make things better or worse to just turn around and toss him back in the cage? "You already killed the boy, and now you should go back to camp to put out the fire that's no doubt started in your tent," you say. The captain's eyes widen and he turns around to run back towards the camp.

Seconding this. While it's true that we are acting as sword and shield for Mari, we're also trying to twist her into using our power to change the world in a huge way. It suits the court of fortune to meddle in the affairs of fate like this.

Make the captain believe that all his limbs are broken in multiple places and that he is mute.

"Mari, he was the one who destroyed your village. He was the one who took your father. Give him your sentence. Give me my orders."

Mari's tree isn't far. She's slumped against the trunk, and appears to be completely motionless. As you draw near, you notice she's still breathing, though. Looks like she's fallen asleep on the branch. Her breathing is heavier than normal, and she looks exhausted.

"Mari, wake up," you whisper into her ear. No good. Several more attempts reveal that she is in an extremely deep sleep. Finally, you return to corporeal form, Unnoticify yourself so that neither she nor Leson will see you doing so, and then nudge her on the shoulder. It ends up taking some severe shaking to get her awake. This girl has become terribly exhausted in the last 45 minutes. "We need to go," you say, having discreetly returned to shadow form.

"Yeah," Mari says numbly, staring off into space.

"Down the tree," you say.

"Okay," Mari says, and begins climbing down. It's only two branches down when she slips off and falls the rest of the way. Fortunately, she doesn't break anything on the way down, but it takes some convincing to get her to stand up again. She staggers and stumbles away as you head away from the camp.

Mari is apparently too exhausted to respond to either of these with actual words, but does manage to stumble towards a nearby shelter. Unfortunately, caves are not readily available, but you do manage to find the decaying remains of a fallen tree against a short cliff that manage to provide some sort of shelter. It's about as good as can be expected, under the circumstances. Leson curls up against Mari's exhausted form to sleep. Mari is out like a light, but Leson's sleep is more fitful.

Well, you ruminate a bit and recall that you have emigrated to this world from another several thousand years ago. When you first arrived, mortals were squatting in mud huts, like actual literal mud huts and not thatched roof houses that a technologically advanced enemy calls "mud huts" out of derision. But since you are well over a hundred thousand years old, you can infer that most of your memories are of another world. Which would make sense, since you seem to remember mortals being far more advanced than these yokels. They had gunpowder weapons and enormous ships with 3 or even 4 masts, you recall, but these guys seem pretty iron age even though you've been sleeping under them for centuries.

The Court of Dominion declared that the world was theirs, you recalled, that they owned it and no other Court would have any presence on it. Claiming an entire world (of which there are only about a half-dozen) is basically unheard of. Daemons are hard to evict.

They managed to kick you out, though, and they and their allies were definitely on the rise. Still, how could they possibly have evicted the Courts of Sun and Sky? Wouldn't evicting the Court of Nature kill all the mortals the newer Courts depended upon for influence? They might have kicked you out of your house, but no way in Hell were they going to actually succeed in getting rid of every Court outside of their alliance.

And here is the winning roll.

You head back to the camp. Taking more time to observe what's going on this time, you note that there are two strange figures. Each clad in a long, red cloak, face concealed by a mask that resembles a cattle skull. The other soldiers give them a wide berth.

The captain broods alone in his tent, and seems worried. Probably because of how he randomly executed a kid against orders. An enemy kid, granted, but still, the orders were apparently quite explicit.

We've got time left for about one action before I sign off and we have to leave it until tomorrow. I'll be running it at 12:00 server time (EST), by the way.

Practicality would dictate not getting the one who knows stuff about the current world eaten. Besides that, it's more a self imposed limitation. We act as a guardian of sorts while whispering lies and half truths, twisting her ambitions. She'll be the one to bring down the greatest empire of the world, and we'll be the one pulling the strings and telling her to do it.

Lolrandum chaos is all well and good, but you have to think on a bigger scale here. We'll change the world, not just a couple hundred people.

They do indeed have some maps, but if they have any written orders, they're sealed, and your incorporeal form isn't opening up anything. The maps are mostly general maps of the region. The west of the map is dominated by a large faction labeled Westerling Empire. Scattered throughout the rest of the land are probably a dozen or more tiny little nations, most of which seem to be named for the guy currently running them: "Ogmar's Kingdom," "Lestrath's Kingdom," "Vellek's Kingdom," etc. etc.

Particularly since my ability to come up with new and interesting characters does have limits, so anyone advocating a strategy of immediately murdering characters right after I've finished fleshing them out and giving them proper personalities because lol randumb please get fucked. I am not interested in parading side characters that take time and effort to develop through a never-ending meat grinder so you can have your edgy short-sighted homicidal demon spirit.

There's two ways this can go. Either 1) something interesting happens that night, or 2) nothing interesting happens, so we skip until the next day.

Hear hear.

I have thouroughly enjoyed the quest, OP. The writing style is decent and descriptive, and the setting seems to be fairly well fleshed out. Looking forward to future installments.

>We've got time left for about one action before I sign off and we have to leave it until tomorrow. I'll be running it at 12:00 server time (EST), by the way.
