>Behind you, Einstein chirped. Apparently his tip of the day updated: http://pastebin.com/CaAF0yS8

The year is 2573, and you're currently lying in the softest bed you've ever known.
It was also purring.
And a tiger.

You rub your eyes and crawl out from under the tiger, and check einstein's time - and apparently it was early morning on the station again, and it seemed you had a few messages. Of the most importance was one from Max, apparently, who said that the actual classes would start tomorrow.
Which means you had the rest of today before you'd have to do more schooling.

>Oh, right, I forgot to mention, but the Tips of the Day also include message logs, if you ever want to take a look at them.

"Summer, do you want me to bring you anything back from the cafeteria?" You ask.
She grumbled in response, rolling over and curling up. Her manifestation didn't even bother to pretend to wake up.
You go into the bathroom and take a short, hot shower, before going up to the cafeteria.

Anna and Jilly were there, Anna looking much less exhausted than last time she was here, and Jilly with a silver armband on her arm.
"Ooh, hello!" Jilly said, and waved, flashing yellow.

You stare at the waffles.
And then the bacon.
And then the waffles.
So you take both, and take a seat, next to the two. Jilly had what looked like an entire barrel of some sort of sludge, which she was courteous to keep off of the table as she dipped the tip of her tail into it.

"I want to apologize for being unnecessarily cold to you." Anna said, her own plate absolutely covered in bacon.

"Don't worry about it!" You say and shoot her a smile. You alternate between bacon and waffles between every bite, while Anna went back to her own food.
"But really, no waffles?" You ask. "What is wrong with you, girl?"
"I have a list of all the foods I want to try, that I've never had before." Anna said, with a slight smile. "Today is bacon. Next week is waffles."

"A whole week of bacon?" You ask. "Good choice."
"No, tomorrow is cereal, and the day after is uh..."
She sighed, and pulled a wrist computer out of the folds of her dress, slipping on and waving her hand.

You felt it twinge as the personacom booted up.
"Eggs. And toast. some kind of toast-eggs." She said, and bit her lip. "Maybe I should try bread for lunch..."
"That is a good strategy." You say. "Allows one to eat everything, and a lot."
"Well, I missed out on a lot of things growing up." She said. "You can't exactly have waffles if the waffle batter is spherical and won't stick on the pan... thing."
She crunched at her bacon some more.
"So um... what do you do besides reading and bacon?"
She rolled her wrist, and the computer went into sleep mode.
"Whatever I feel like, usually. What do you do besides waffles and squeeing at tech?"
>>

>>
"Whatever I feel like, usually." You say, and she shot you a small smile before going back to her everpresent neutral expression.
"Not sure I like this." She said, eating the bacon. "It's not crunchy enough in some parts, and in others it's so crunchy that it's charred."
"You could try my food, if you want." Jilly's translator synthesized, as she beamed at you two.
"Thank you for the offer, but your digestive system is way different than ours." Anna responded.
Jilly pouted, and her skin went a dark, purplish blue.
"I don't... really do much." You say, a moment later.
"Yeah, I need to find more things to do than just reading, now that I don't, uh..."
Anna trailed off for a moment.
"... uh, have as many things filling up my time. Maybe classes will be fun."
>>

"I've got a game that might... interest you, if you'd like to hear about it."
"A game?"
"Do you know FutureCraft?" You ask.
"I've heard of it." She responded.
"It's an immersive, highly competitive multiplayer game, which I am totally better at than my friend." You say.
"I'm... not very interested in competition." She said.
You recall yesterday morning's training, when she'd gloated when she won and got furious when she'd lost.
"Yes you are." Jilly said, and Anna frowned.

"Well, nothing wrong with trying it, right?" You ask. "Right? Just give it a try, I'm sure you'll enjoy it."
She sighed, and shook her computer, waking it up again.
"Go ahead and transfer it. I'll take a look."
You have Einstein start transferring the game to her while you finish up your truly enormous meal, and soon enough, it was done.

"There are a lot of options for what army you are." Anna noticed, flipping through the choices. Her eyebrows met. "This space marine army says that they're difficult to play, because they don't have diverse fighters. Can I still try them?"
You nod.
"Okay, then that's what I'll go with." She said, and took another bite of bacon. "The help file gave me the basics, so I'll try it out. You ready to play?"
>>
>>23525382
"I was born ready."

"We have nothing but time today, so sure!" You say. "I was born ready."
"I wasn't ready!" You respond, not long after. Her small deathsquads of heavily armed, armored, exosuited marines moved in ways you'd never seen, using their ion jetpacks to flank your hordes of cute robots, and sabotage your production buildings. Even the few times you played in official matches, you'd never seen anything like it. It was just a long battle where she kept cutting your supply lines, destroying resource miners, and, for the most part, avoiding the main mass of your army.
"That's war." She said, and shrugged.

Then she turned off her computer, and put it away.
"Not sure I like the game, but it'll kill time."

>>
"But... My robots." You say, pouting. "My cute robots. How could you?"
To her credit, she was actually able to meet your eyes for two whole seconds before she started to feel guilty at your teary, frustrated expression.
"... I uh... I'm sorry." She said, and awkwardly patted your shoulder.
Jilly's hands clasped together, and she flashed yellow at the both of you, before giving her bucket to the lunch ladies and leaving the cafeteria.
Then you saw her peek in through the doorway, trying not to be seen.

>>
"All silliness aside, you are really good at it." You say. "Do you have anything in mind that I could try?"
"Did you read that book I lent you?" She asked.
You don't respond.
"Then you could do that." She said.
"... Maybe Jilly wants to play?" You ask.
"No, she's decided that I need more friends, so she's trying to leave us alone. She's just so curious that she wants to watch. " She said. "She reads way more romance novels than an asexual creature should."
>>
>>23525733
"Maybe she wants someone to teach her what we humans call...love?"

"Also I had no idea their race were asexual."
>>
>>23525733
"Haha, well it makes some sense, I suppose romance must be a fascinating concept from her point of view. Still, we can be perfectly friendly while she's around I'm sure."

"Good on her, she's trying to help you."

"So she likes to play matchmaker? Well we can play along a bit. Let me show you my workshop?"
>>
>>23525733
"Well, I can't fault her for her enthusiasm."
>>
>>23525733
Blink.
"Right... Do you want to see my workshop?"
>>
"Haha, well, it makes some sense, I suppose. Romance must be a fascinating concept from her point of view. Still, we can be perfectly friendly while she's around, I'm sure."
"As long as you don't annoy me, at least." She said with a wry expression.
You blink.
"Right... do you want to see my workshop?"
"I'm not interested in tech stuff, but I might as well." She said.
The two of you made your way up to the dorms again, taking it slowly so Anna didn't exhaust herself, and eventually you reached the large, empty room that had become your workshop.
It matched, maybe even surpassed your mom's shop, except the fact that this workshop only had two maintenance drones instead of the dozen. Parts covered shelves in the walls, and you even had a bank of chemical cells, and a rack of nuclear cells for power, phaeron gas canisters set into the wall, flourescent lights and a small compartment that was EM-shielded...
And it was beautiful.

"Looks like they actually moved a lot of stuff in for such a short amount of time." Anna said neutrally. Her lack of proper reverence was almost... blasphemy.

>>
"Oh man oh man this is gonna be great!" You squeal, and lovingly stroke one of the dormant maintenance drones. "I can't even think of the amount of things I could build with all this!"
You proceed to *prance* across the room, skidding toward the boxes of parts, and tools. You take a ratchet in hand and just start twisting it so it made the noise.
"I wonder if the lights can change colors?" you ask.
You glanced at Anna, and she saw something in your eyes, and took an involuntary step back.
"Or... maybe..." You say. "I can make them change colors."
Anna edged toward the door, ready to flee if need be.

You sigh, and Anna started giggling.
"It's fine, I was joking. I don't need anything made." She said, quietly giggling, covering her mouth. "Least of all those boots or exoskeleton you were babbling about."
She rubbed at her temples. "I don't even know if you were actually babbling or if you were just telepath... telepathising? We need a better word for that. Broadcasting."
She shook her head, and giggled some more.
"But the look on your face..."
You sigh, and then grab the parts to make some manipulators, and get to work. Anna was still giggling, almost unable to stop, as she took a seat not far from you, watching you work.

"How about something like Einstein?" You ask.
"That would be pretty interesting." She said. "I'd like that."

Some time later, you whirl around, the two manipulators in hand, and sing a 'Ta-da~'... just to find Anna was sleeping, sitting back in her chair, arms crossed.
From here, with her head leaning back, you could see the knotted flesh of a long scar going down her collar-bone.
"Hm?" She asked, and suddenly jerked forward. "What was that?"
"... Ta-da." You say again, weakly.
"For your assistant drone?" She asked, and you nod.

>>23526684

"he'll be fetching my tools for me within the next day!"

"thanks, for coming along. any place you need to be or want to go?"
>>
"So he can pick up and grab things." You say, and pull off Einstein's plating, connecting the manipulators in. He chirped, downloading the necessary drivers to learn to use them, and started wiggling his fingers and hands.

"So, what would you like it to be like?" You ask. "Hover, quad, wheels, legs, legs with wheels?"
"Hover would probably be best." She said. "I spend so much time in zero-G, anyway..."
"Then I'll work on it - with manipulators - next time I have some free time." You say, and get to your feet. "Come on, let's get you back toward the hub."
"Right, okay." She said, and the two of you continued to walk.

When you get to the top of the elevator, to the hub, you saw Sarvesh standing there, the elbows of his upper arms jutting out, eyes closed. He buzzed slightly when the elevator hissed.
"Oh, hello." Max said, nodding to you and Anna.
"Mm." Anna responded.
>>

"look, hands." while grinning like an lovestruck teenager
>>
"Hey!" You say, accidentally bouncing on your heels -which, in zero G, wasn't a good idea. Stopping yourself with telekinesis, you set yourself back down.
"Special training?"
"Indeed." Sarvesh responded, his eyes still closed.
"How do you spend time before lectures, Max?"
"Chasing my own tail, watching the Extranet... normal things." Max said. "Sometimes I visit the researchers."
Then, suddenly, a floating plastic ball you didn't notice before started quivering... and shot across the room, bouncing off the walls until friction slowed it down.
Max sighed.
"You need to focus more." Max said. "Stop leering at the girls."
"I'm sorry." Sarvesh responded. "Also, my eyes have been closed this entire time."
>>
>>23526978
I suggest that we start feeling funny now that we suddenly realize Sarvesh apparently finds us attractive.

"What are you doing? Telekinesis training? Are you trying to throw the ball? Dodge it?"
"I'm trying to duplicate the action I did when I first lost my arm." Sarvesh said. "It was something done in desperation, but I did it perfectly then."
He took a deep breath, his face-flaps widening as large as possible, and focused... and the ball popped, bits of plastic shooting everywhere.
Max sighed again, and pulled the plastic bits to him, loading them into a vacuum disposal. "Fine, we'll get another one."
Max pulled out another ball with his mouth, and nudged it toward Sarvesh.

"Is that not what's meant to happen?"
"What's meant to happen is the ball's supposed to move." Max said.
"So he's training telekinesis, then." Anna said.
"No, he's training for the translocation of matter." Max said. "At least, that's what the researchers call it."
"... Impossible." Anna said.
"It was caught on camera. You could watch it on the Extranet, if you wish." Sarvesh said. "As most wargames are."
"Why is that?" Max asked. "That they're all put online, I mean."
"Tradition. The entire tribe is supposed to watch each wargame between two warriors." Sarvesh said, as the ball wobbled and turned bright green. "And since we view the entire UPA as our tribe, it was simplest to record them with cameras."

"Why's that impossible, Anna?"
"Because there's no force, or.. hyperspace, or other dimension that can teleport things." Anna said, exasperated. "And if you tell me that Sarvesh here can open, I don't know, wormholes or-"

Then the green ball suddenly flashed, and appeared in front of Anna.
Her first instinct was to punch it, and it bounced across the wall.
"Now now, Anna." You say. "To the rational mind, nothing is inexplicable. Only unexplained."
Anna squeaked.
Sarvesh's mandibles twitched as you've seen them twitch quite a bit, and then you realize... he's laughing. That's how he laughs.

"Well, the researchers will by happy with that." Max said. "Either of you want to try?"
".. No, I'm fine." anna grumbled.
You made your own way into Sarvesh's position, and Max nudged a ball next to you.
You closed your eyes, and focused on moving the ball, pouring all your will into it...
And you heard a bang, as it exploded.
"... Hm." Max said, pulling the shards closer to him. "Even I couldn't get it to do that when I tried. Maybe you could specialize toward transference, too. You might want to tell your counselor when you meet him."
>>

"What trick?" Anna asked.
"It's a surprise!" You say. "Or it will be, when I get it working."

You turn to Sarvesh. "Sarvesh, how did you do that? Did you just imagine it not being at point A and going to point B?"
"Yes, but... not exactly." He said. "I have no words for what I did."
He tilted his head, and then closed his eyes, and another ball flashed next to him, and then away, and then into his hand.
"... I do think I have figured out the trick to it, though."

"Now, that's an intriguing concept." Max said, and pushed himself to the elevator. "I'm going down. Is anyone else going?"

His mandibles stuck themselves into his mouth.
"Afterward, if you have questions, I will do my best to answer them." He said. "It won't bother me too much."
>>

I, ah, may have already seen the beginning of it.

I already saw it in a vision.

I managed to stop watching when he grabbed your claw though. I don't enjoy watching people I like get hurt."
>>
I don't think we should specialise in Techopathy. It's neat and all, but I don't think it's worth the hit that we'll take to all of our other psionic talents, TK in particular.

We should by all means unlock it and figure out what it can do, but we shouldn't make it our sole focus.
>>
>>23527860
"I already saw the beginning of it when I went into the isolation chamber. I couldn't keep watching, it looked painful."

>>
>>23527940
The way I read it, it's hard to not specialize. If you use any particular talent too much, it becomes specialized to the detriment of all the others.
It's better to purposefully specialize in something we actually choose to than accidentally specialize in something we happen to use a lot.
>>
"I, ah, have to admit, I already saw the beginning of it." You say. "When I went into the isolation chambers yesterday, I began to get flashes of other peoples' memories. I managed to stop watching when he grabbed your arm."
You touch his cybernetic pincer, and gave it a slight squeeze.
"It looked painful. I couldn't bear to watch."
"It was." He said. "In... in more ways than one."

Then the elevator stopped, and he walked down toward the dorms, apparently going back to his room. He almost seemed to be retreating.

I can understand that reasoning, and if we must specialise then it isn't a bad choice, I guess. But Max said anything was possible, and compared to the ability to read minds, or cause emotions in people, or perhaps even possess them, compared to the ability to simply make robots out of thin air, the ability to turn machines on or off is... dull. You can do that just by walking over to them and flicking the switch.
And sure, I've oversimplified here, but unless technopathy lets us do something we can't actually do already...

think to the little glimpse we had in the chamber.
We could potentially control ANY machine, in range. No need to have line of sight (or any physical sense) to them.
We could probably manifest materials as well, etc.
>>
First thing you do, of course, is you spend some time writing an email home, telling dad about the interesting people there, and mom about the way the space station works, and then you write two whole pages gushing about the workshop to her - you knew she'd gush back just as much.
Once you get back to your workshop, you finish and send the mail, and get to work on the frame for Anna's drone.

Time passed, and eventually your stomach growled. It was nearly noon. You set down the frame and half-completed ion control, and then hear the door to your dorm room hiss open, as Summer padded out, her manifestation rubbing at her eyes. Summer gave you a meow that said 'hi', and then turned, still tired, toward the cafeteria.

Then he took a spoonful from it and then coughed.
"Okay, um. I added too much to this." He said, drinking a glass of water. "I'll dump this out and get some with a lot less sugar."
