Your name is Lord William Bordain, Lord of Morderengrad, and Sworn Lord to Jon Arryn, Hand of the King. You are known throughout the Seven Kingdoms as the slayer of the Targaryen princess in Robert’s Rebellion, and are mistrusted for it. Until mere months ago, your lands had been in open revolt against you. Recently, however, you have mustered your courage, will, and your army, and rode out to face those who opposed you. Since then, your lands have bent the knee quickly. Your loudest detractor was struck by you in the town square, and his tongue nailed to the local Inn. You rode out to face the Hill Tribes that had raided your metal shipments, and you shattered their chief’s arm in single combat. You have swayed four of his warchiefs that serving you is wiser than continuing to fight, and seek to sway or destroy three more.

And were this not enough, you know that your problems have an outside cause, that someone funds yours trouble with a Lord’s ransom of wealth. You do not know who this enemy is, other than that their coin is strange, and their messenger wore a purple pin. Perhaps the fete at the Eyrie in two months’ time with shed more light on the subject, for now you ride to the camp of Gorda, of the Painted Dogs, to sway him to your allegiance.

4chan ate my thread descriptions. BLAGGUARD!

Anywho, having come from the camp of Rogar, widely regarded as the weirdest of the chiefs, you proceed to the camp of Gorda, Luuk filling you in on his history.

Gorda, it seems, was once the fiercest and most cunning warrior of his band, but he has grown fat, and does not want to war. Rousing him to make the "long march" (some 15 miles) to your war-moot took threats of violence from Tor. Luuk does not think it will be hard for you to convince Gorda of the wisdom of joining your tribe.

Hey, look, a better map.

It looks like each Chief of the dogs claimed a stretch of land about as big as yours.
Which means your land score is going to fucking JUMP!

You ride up the river fork, into the mountains. Gorda's camp would be better called an outpost, for it bears wooden walls, and generally carries the feel of an abandoned military post that he seized for his home.

Gorda himself comes to greet you. His is quite large, and wears a thick fur robe. He seems...amiable to your presence. His reception is warmer than Rogar's but less friendly than Murwin's.

"Welcome, Chief of Iron, to the Rooted Clan. We not a rich people, but we have more than our fill. Come, come! Let us speak of Chief Business!"

He leads you into a small wooden hut, asking you to leave the majority of your Bloodsmiths outside for convenience. It is a small hut, and all 20 of them would not fit. Your eyes can see the truth of this, but you bring two as a token force.

You enter to find a woman scurrying back and forth, preparing a meal for Gorda. He swats at her.
"I say it be done when Chief of Iron come! Why it not done?"
"I sorry, Gorda, he come more fast than I think!"

He turns. "Pah! Womenfolk, always slow. This I hear is no strange, vale man or hill tribe. Sit, sit! We will business!"

YOU ARE NOW ENTERING AN INTRIGUE EXCHANGE.
For those unfamiliar, basically, you're about to enter an extended Negotiation scene. You can try different tactics to influence your opponent, and they will do the same.
SCENE: You and Gorda are negotiating with no onlookers. No one receives a bonus to defense.
OBJECTIVE: Presumably, you are attempting to get Gorda to agree to swear fealty. This is considered a FRIENDSHIP objective. Gorda wishes you to reward him for this. His goal is SERVICE.

Decide your DISPOSITION TO GORDA: Friendly, Amiable, Indifferent, Dislike, Unfriendly

You had both attempted to break the silence at the same time. Entertaining, you both chuckle at the faux-pas. Gorda signals you can speak first.

"I have heard you are a great warrior, Gorda, and all warriors deserve a place to rest. Your home is shelter enough, but you could have a more fitting life if you were to bend the knee and enter my service."

Gorda smiles, though you suspect he is not all that impressed by your praise. (You hit, but didn't affect his composure.)

"Such praise from you, Chief of Iron! Your arm is the lightning bolt, smashing your enemy! And your eyes like the hawk's, ever seeking an opening! Yes, you...are...mighty..."

You take a moment to get a read on your opponent.
(Roll, and...Success!)
You can tell that he is currently Amiable to you, and that he's going to try and Bargain.

...

I find it strange that in combat you can take two actions a round, but not in intrigue. I will think on this. For now, you know he's going to bargain, and he does so.

"Chief of Iron, Gorda not need much to make him and his people happy, and he certain he can help your people. Give Gorda and people better walls, many furs, and good foods, and we can be chiefs."
(His attack fails to affect you. Another hit, but soaked by your amiability. He may try using his reputation next to ease you up.)

Next round. This time, pick two actions, I want to see if moving this to combat speed unbalances it.
>>
>>23689921
That doesn't seem too bad... kind of vague... I'd like some solid numbers. Why don't we BARGAIN with him?

Gorda, we could give you better walls, but would your people want them, or would they wish to return to the ways they once were? If we gave you good food, would not your people complain that they did not get it themselves? If we give them furs, will they not suspect that the furs are naught but the worst we could give?

How about instead I will make you this vow. I will vow to shelter you when you are in need, I will assist you when you desire aid, your enemies shall be my enemies, and when your time is near, and you are old, toothless, and in pain, I will vouchsafe you a quick and clean death. All I ask in return, is your loyalty, and the word of you, who I know to be an honest man.

Gorda leans back in his chair. He ruminates for a time, turning your words over in his head.
"Your gifts are worth much to Gorda. He will kneel to the Chief of Iron."

He gestures the girl, who step out, and brings in something. You look it over. It is a stone.

>>
I have a bad feeling M'Lord. Now , when we are weary from travel, would be a time for our enemies to strike. Also, by now, word of our success treating with the hillmen will have reached other ears. Or perhaps the chiefs who rejected us have form a plot amongst themselves. Better for our enemies that we die before any of these plans bear fruit.

What did we wind up doing with Rogar?

>>23690648

Yep, and now we have those three convince the other two to come visit us. Let's have them work their magic on their own kind. If they see we have gathered the others to our side, they may be suspicious, but more willing. Also, they are outnumbered by their own kind.

I doubt we'd have to fight Vil-Ak, and if we rallied all the other chiefs to our side, Ut seems less likely to pull something.
Plus, to return to our castle, wouldn't we have to ride through both Vil-Ak and Ut's territory?
I don't think it would look good if we went past them even though they were on the way.
Seems like they might either feel snubbed, or think that we fear them.

I say we should ride through ut's territory and snub him, then visit Vil-Ak, make some meaningless statement of piety or some such to ignratiate with him, and invite him to the castle to eat and treat with us.
Maybe Ut will fall for the bait and we can take his head.If not, he wil lose some face and be more isolated for when we deal with him eventually.
Honestly, we need to make another example with these hillmen, and he seems to be crying out for the job.

>>
>>23690734
>>23690722
>>23690662
>>23690600

That's the consensus then.

You press on, up into the hills and mountains, for the territory of Vil-Ak. Luuk is beginning to squirm on his saddle, since you've spent most of the day mounted, but he continues to update with what he thinks you should know.

Vil-Ak is something of a priest to the Painted Dogs. Of all the chiefs, his opinion is the most likely to sway the common Painted Dogs, given his sacred status. The chiefs will follow their word, but no Painted Dog is forced to follow the chiefs. Vil-Ak is seen to speak with the spirits of the mountains and wind, and consult with the beasts of the wood.
Fairly typical heathen mumbo-jumbo.

However, he was the keeper of the old ways, respect his beliefs, he'll probably ask you to prove yourself spiritually.

As you come upon his camp, you notice that it is more somber than the other chieftains'. The tents are closer and darker, and the people are mostly gathered around a great fire. There, before the flame, sits an older man, his face painted like an owl. He is telling a story, but he stops when you arrive.
He rises slowly.

"You are Will-yam, the Chief of Iron. You have come here to make my people kneel. This the wind told me, and the deer whispered in my ear. If we do not, we be scattered like the leaves as winter comes. But we have our ways. And the law clear. Painted Dogs cannot follow an outsider. I am sorry."
He pauses.
"Of course, the Law too says that those who pass the manhood ritual are Men, no matter their flaw. So, is your Iron strong enough to be forged in the Fires of Truth?"

He offers you a wineskin, clearly having prepared for this.

Tell me before I agree to this ritual of yours Vil-Ak. Is one considered a man if, in single combat he defeats a chieftan nearly twice his age and experience? Is one considered a man if other, wiser, and more experienced chiefs kneel to him and acknowledge him as their chief? For if these things do not make one a man, then I doubt that drinking from a skin of sour wine will do it either.

"Now you must gaze into the fire, and see what the spirits will say to you."

You seat yourself by the fire, glaring into it sullenly. You are dimly aware that the rest of the tribe is leaving; presumably this is meant to be a private thing. Although, some of them are staying. It appears the men get to watch.

Fools. Staying to watch you watch a fire, waiting to see som- The fire cracks, and you jump back, standing now. The fire is dimmer than it should be, and you feel a weight upon your back. >>
Has the DM left?
>>
>>23691571
>>23691606

Uh, hold on guys --

Is the owl still fighting us?

If so, then we keep fighting.

If it is just telling us to cool off, then we back up a bit and be wary, but don't attack.
>>
>>23691812

Nah, screw that. It's reaching a talon towards us. We are a screaming ball of hate and rage with everything/everyone that has tried to manipulate us and force us to act their way. We chose to make our own way, and with this act we force that decision. We don't need a spirit guide, our Warpick is our guide.
>>
>>23691812
Yeah I'd rather not piss off a god.
I think we should settle for standing up and lifting our weapon.
>>
>>23691561
>>23691571

Heh.
(I'll give you the closest I've got.)

You lunge forward, swinging your warpicks at the owl's head. It hoots wildly, and tries to draw back, but you slam into it, and it explodes in feathers. Soft, pillowy feathers rain down over you, brushing you softly to...

You awaken. Night has fallen, and the fire has burned down some. Surrounding you are a great many Painted Dogs men, sporting some hefty bruises. As you stumble to your feet, they cheer and clap for you. You look around, and spot Luuk. He is looking at you with something like awe in his eyes. You turn, and there is Vil-ak. Sporting two black eyes. He looks at you, and raises his voice.
"Before you is Will-yam, Chief of Iron. He has passed the test. His is the spirit of the Mole-Bear, that grey digger into the mountains and earth, who in his fury will fight any creature that dares invade his territory. May he do it honor in all ways."
More cheering.
"Do any deny this one is a man?"

"I do."

(SUDDEN CLIFFHANGER ENDING!!!)
>>
>>23691840

Stand up and, still holding our weapons, put our arms out to our sides.

Kind of like the giant Jesus statue in Brazil, but with Warpicks in our hands and looking determined as fuck up to the Owl
>>

>>23691852
We're a badger?
That fits.
Also, it looks like we get to take on Ut right now.
>>
>>23691852
Nah, just fucking with you.

Some new warrior, with a bevy of lackeys, has entered the lighted fire area. He is tall, his hair cut like the mane of a stallion, and he bears a greatsword upon his back...that definitely has a Morderengrad maker's mark.

You gather that this is Ut.

"I deny this one is a man."

Your temper flares at his arrogance. Who the FUCK does he THINK he IS? You're the fucking' squire of TYWIN LANNISTER. YOU'VE fought THE MOUNTAIN THAT RIDES. FUCK HIS STUPID HORSE HAIR SHIT.

Roll initiative.

It's something that should perfectly fit us, it fits the destiny we are working towards, and it shows that we will take no shit from anyone, especially a thief.

>>
>>23692020

Think about it. This guy is the ONLY one of his own men not calling us a man. The rest of them have heard the tale already, of us being hard as iron, of our prowess in war, and everything else. Now they see all the rest of the hill tribes bowing to us, and this one man standing in the way.

By destroying him utterly while disarming ourselves it shows to them that we are so much the badass that we don't even need a weapon. That we, ourselves are the weapon, that our men are the weapon, that OUR hill tribesmen are the weapon, and that they can either stand with us, kneel before us, or be crushed like fucker there.

Seriously.

After doing that, just stand there, arms crossed before us and just stare at the rest of the newly arrived hillfolk. With him dead before us, say one word, and one word only.

"Kneel."

Do not let yourselves doubt it, THIS is exactly what our destiny is, let us SEIZE this opportunity and own this whore in a way that is not only sudden, but unique, memorable, and guaranteed to turn even our strongest doubting hill tribesmen into fervent supporters.

MY NAME IS PAGE.

And how terrifying that right as I decide to give you a destiny point, you burn one.

IT IS DONE.
"Thief."
You burn your Destiny point, turning all bonus die in Fighting to Test Die. You attack, flinging your Warpick into his face. Total roll 26. That is 4 degrees of success, and a critical. You deal...25 damage. This is also known as "almost three times his health"

At which point, I could be a bitch and have him burn his destiny point to survive. But what of our association together makes you think I'm a bitch?

Your warpick spins once, and slams into his chest, punching through. He hits the ground with a distinct and wet "thud".

There is a long moment of silence, where the eyes turn from his ruined corpse to you, arms crossed, eyes still wild from the drug's effects.

"Kneel."

And kneel they do.

HUZZAH, YOU'VE SUBJUGATED THE HILL TRIBES. YOUR STATS ARE ABOUT TO GO FUCKING INSANE! BUT MORE ON THAT LATER.

You ride to your castle, covered in blood, warpaint, and other filth from your journey. You sleep the night in your bed, and wake late, around 11.

Ravenous, you consume your breakfast of thick sausage, hot eggs, and a patty of fried potato and oatmeal dough.

Korbis enters your solar. There's no news today, though you still have yet to make any decrees.

>>

>>
>>23692544

YES

Though they are tribal, so they might want different names for each group.

I say that we suggest the name Iron Hounds, but ask what they'd like to be called now.

I'd rather we not impose on something personal like a name.
>>
>>23692544

Iron Hounds seems alright to me.
>>
>>23692567

Yes, and still calling them dogs is insulting.

Just my thoughts on it. Maybe they would welcome the name change, maybe not. Honestly, I don't care. I'm just throwing that out there. Dogs aren't trained or loyal. Hounds are.
>>
>>23692568

Piss on them and their drowned god. They call themselves that because they come from the Iron Islands. We call us and our men that because we Earned it, not just because of some error of birth place.

You descend to your throne room. You enter to spy a man fiddling with one of the swords hanging on the wall. He's tall and broad-shouldered, though not as tall as you. His hair is brown, and shaggy, and he has a strong beard to accompany it. Despite this, as Korbis says, he seems a bit of a ponce. His shirt is a rich plum, over a white undershirt you can see because the top shirt is open. his pants are dark, clearly well made, though their bottom cuffs are browned from the road. All of his clothes seem that way, well-made, but older.
He notices you, and turns.
"MY LORD BORDAIN! A PLEASURE, A PLEASURE."
The man talks as if the room were twice as wide as it was. He closes the space to within 10 feet, and sketches a bow.
"Jonah Gunn, SIR, and you are ex-ACTLY the kind of man I've been looking for. You may have heard of me?" There's a quick beat where he eyes you, you shake your head. "No matter, you're not the type! I am a bard by trade, a wanderer of roads, a wooer of women, and teller of tales. And all the roads and women hereabout tell me you have a tell worth telling, my lord!"

It takes you a moment to realize that the man's voice is just somehow that loud, that he's not intentionally shouting at you. You'll say this, it keeps you focused on him.

"My lord, I see an opportunity for us BOTH in this. For a nominal fee, I will stride the Seven Kingdoms, from Morderengrad to Sunspear, to Winterfell and back, and I will share your story!"
(Cont.)
>>
>>23692625

Listen very intently. Nod in appreciation, and smile.

"No."

Then turn and leave. Have the guards beat him, then throw him out.

"IF I may be indelicate, my lord? At present you are not a well-loved man, for your actions during the Rebellion. But No Man Should Be Judged By Sin Alone! No Sir! SO Blessed by the Warrior, he faced a Hill Chieftain in single combat, Before his Very Army, and turn them back without sustaining a Scratch!"

He's...vigorous, you have to admit. And if he can turn those tales into glory, what about the events of the last day?

"I need only a mere thousand dragons to sustain myself my lord, and I assure you, the people will know of your generosity, ferocity, and likeabili-osity!"

>>
>>23692693

Er, Page, how well-known are the events of the last few... ... however long it's been.

I figure that our men might have started talking about the fight we had with Tor, but... How long has it been since then? Day? Days? Weeks? Month?

Where is this guy FROM? Where has he been traveling around? How did he hear about us?

For that matter, how did he hear about our, well, hear about us not being a monstrous asshole. Because I think that might not be very well known -- I mean, we'd spent the last 2 years brooding, so, well...

(And at any rate, I do not want him to go to Sunspear, if we agree with this guy. We killed one of Elia's children after all, so...)

>>
>>23692891

Hrm... I don't want to throw him out, beat him up, or anything. No, that would just convince him that we're awful. We don't need more trouble than we've got.

Actually, one thing we might do (regardless of whether we choose to pay him, or ask him to stay, or what) -- why don't we also ask him for the news?

That is, what he's heard, what lord is doing what, what's going on, what's the best gossip, etc.

As well as ask what brought him to the province of a guy who (until recently) was seen as a smaller version of the Mountain.

Okay, emp's plan it is.

You signal Korbis.
"Prepare a chamber for our guest, he must be weary from the road, and we will be a finer place for a man of his caliber than an inn."

Korbis nods and leaves.

"My lord, you're too kind! I merely sought some patronage and hoped to win you influence in the other courts! I would not inconvenience you in any way." Jonah continues "But, does this mean you're interested?"

You deflect the question "We shall have to review our finances, Jonah, and at the moment, I need luncheon. Will you join me?"

He hastily accedes, but insists he must clean himself before dining at your table. As he leaves, you signal Korbis, and instruct him to send a man to bring Luuk as quickly as possible.

At lunch, the man is, surprisingly, much more well-mannered. He must have combed his hair and beard, maybe even taken a quick cut to the latter. His voice is much less forceful than it was, and his speech is more thoughtful and calm.

"I'm truly excited for this opportunity my lord. Most of the songs and stories these days are so predictable. I spent three years studying literature with the Maesters in Oldtown, it almost drove me mad. I want to find new stories to tell."

>Questions?
>>
>>23692869

Yeah, I say we ask him to stay for a bit.

Among other things, we'll ask him about stuff and rumors and news of the outside. Also, I suppose we could use a bard to cheer us up -- and we'd also see if this guy is any good as a bard!
>>
>>23693125

This. If the man wants to tell our story, let him demonstrate that he's actually, y'know, worth the fee.
>>
>>23693115

Ask him about news, about where he's been, what stories he has heard, maybe ask him to play a song or two. You know. Bard stuff.
>>
>>23693115
We should probably get what news he has of the Vale and land as a whole, see what our Lord and neighbors have been up to.
>>
>>23693115
"Pardon my bluntness, but how has that been working for you so far? As you know, I've been spending some... personal time for the past two years, so I'm a bit behind on state of affairs outside my lands. Do you have any highlights?"
>>
>>23693149
>>23693125

These two, please.
>>
>>23693115
...So he wants to find new stories to tell?
Seven hells, he Unbreakable'd us.
>>
>>23693115
We should check on what he knows of Tollett, if he might be plotting something against us.
>>
Y'know if it turns out this guy isn't the culprit, it would be useful to have a traveling bard spy.
>>
>>23693115
Luncheon, by the way, is a hot soup of potatoes and roasted garlic, topped with cheese, with thick bread to sop up, as well as potted Shrimp with cayenne pepper and clarified butter, served with brown bread.

Jonah eats like you're about to take it away from him.

>>23693154
>>23693158
"News, milord? Let's see...You're from the Westerlands, yeah? Spent some time in King's Landing?"
">>23693174"
"Ah, well, The Targaryens birthed two more children before a knight bustled them off to Braavos. Robert's madder than a pricked bear about that. We've a Prince! Well, not yet, but Cersei's with child! The Baratheon brothers are lords of Storm's End and Dragonstone now."
He talks some more about a variety of things not particularly interesting. They're about the regions you've interacted with, so he's trying to make it interesting, but it's been a quiet year, you can tell.

When asked for a demonstration of his skills, he nods, and asks if you know "The Tale of the Tower of Joy"

You do not.

He smiles, "That's because no one but me tells it!"

And he launches into it. It's from the latter days of the rebellion. The Targaryens were crushed, but Ned Stark had a worry in his heart. For though they had sacked the city, and crushed Rhaegar at the Trident, nowhere had they found his sister, Dear Lyanna, the first snatched prize that started the war. And so Ned and six others searched and searched and in their search they spoke to each of the Great Houses (each house is depicted a touch stereotypically, but end up using their words in a manner that they would find appropriate), until he comes back to the Tower of Joy, where he must face Arthur Dayne, of the Kingsguard, and the other fallen defenders of the crown, who for some reason had been at none of the great battles. There Ned fought them, and there, he killed them, though each of his companions died. And there he found Lyanna, dead, and entombed.
IT is masterfully told. (16 on Persuasion)
>>
>>23693372
Oops, forgot to point out:
The tale frames Rhaegar as mad as his father for sending his Kingsguard to watch a corpse, and mourns the brave knights lost to his folly. It's rather nicely symbolic of the entire rebellion.
>>
>>23693372
"That was well done. Do you perhaps know the bear and the maiden fair?"
>>
>>23693440
Heh http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6VMSYIXCCY&list=PL820E3A81A6EC8823
>>
>>23693372
Hm, so has the skills to back up his bluster?
Assuming he's not Scooby-Doo-villain crazy, I think it might actually be a good investment, though we should try to talk his price down a bit.
>>
>>23693454
We should really make him aware that his primary goal is not to fluff up our image, a far reaching spy with the charm and silvertongue to worm his way into various courts will be what we use him for. If only we had some kind of dirt on him or something to really ensure his strict loyalty
>>
>>23693487
Lets find out more about his past and who he worked for.
>>
>>23693487
Eh, I don't see much need for a spy in all honestly.
I mean we hate pretty much everyone, and like the guy said, nothing's really happening.
>>
>>23693440
He sighs a little at the request: "Certainly, sir. Though, Singing is not my strength."
He launches into it...(14 on his check) He's certainly not bad. He'd make enough singing in an inn a night to pay for a private room for a week, if he was lucky.

One minute, trying to find something worth eating in my house.
>>
>>23693519
Well then, unless Luuk pegs him as our culprit, we've no use for him. Nothing may be happening now, but the lands won't stay quiet forever, knowledge can be the sharpest blade when wielded properly. We might be a brooding brute but we're no dummy either.
>>
>>23693548
Ask him if we'd be his first customer, and also about his discretion.
We don't want to people to know we've hired him, else we might come across as pompous or vain, as that might negate anything we'd gain from him telling our story.
>>
>>23693627
Also in case it wasn't clear, right now we're just stalling for time until Luuk shows up.
>>
Rolled 4, 5, 3, 1, 4 = 17

>>23692459
Excessively low population harms house fortune but so does excessively high. If we convert 18 population to power (then law next month) the benefit from pop. goes up.
>>
>>23693514

"Me sir? Son of a shipwright from the Iron Islands. I came down to Oldtown, studied to be a maester. Forged a couple links, but didn't finish my chain. Decided to go out and see the world before I came back to wrap it up. Figured "once I become a maester, that's that. May as well have the fun now." "

>>23693627
"My first lordly customer, sir! A merchant or two has paid me for stories and song, but you'd be my first patron. And no need to worry about blabbering mouths. No one likes a braggart sir. I'd tell them I had just come from where ever struck my fancy-"
At this point Luuk strides in.
"Oh! Is this one of the Hill People? Is he here to wreak vengeance?! Wait, there'd be an alarm, wouldn't there?"
Luuk looks at the man then to you, and shakes his head.
"No, there wouldn't be an alarm, or no, something else?"

>>23693658
It took about an hour to find Luuk, and twenty minutes to get him here (he was down in the town)
>>
>>23693770
Luuk here is one of my sworn banner-men (I think translates our arrangement well), Luuk this is Korbis a minstrel and tale teller.
>>
>>23693836
Adding onto this.
"Since my fight with the chief of the hill tribes, I've brought them under my banner as subjects. A mutually beneficial agreement."
>>
>>23693836
Erm Korbis is our Steward...
>>
>>23693770

Frankly i am liking him more and more. And having several different interpretations of our actions, including at least one beneficial will only help us long term.

And with a hefty warning like "Do not betray my trust, for i am like steel." or something is likely sufficient deterrent for any foul play, not that i think there will be any.
>>
>>23693770
So he's not the patron after all... still, he's asking for an oddly specific amount. The exact amount the hill tribes were paid, and it's an exorbitant sum.
>>
>>23693877
Oh my mistake. It should be Jonah Gunn.
>>
>>23693836
Should we be spilling the beans to just anyone about our alliance with the hillmen? Especially before the fete?

If they are a more secret resource then we can use them in earnest against our foes with little chance of retaliation.
>>
>>23693770
"Allow me to introduce you to Luuk, son of Tor, who was the hill tribe chief you mentioned earlier. Luuk, this is Jonah Gunn, a traveling storyteller.
My apologies, Jonah, I was just checking to see if you had met before, but it appears I was mistaken.
Though now that you're here, Luuk, could you pull up a chair and tell Jonah what happened yesterday? I'd tell him myself, but I fear it would be so fantastic he couldn't help but think me a liar."
>>
>>23693907
Maybe the purple shirt is just the patron's ID, if you will, and that all the people we've interacted with are just his lackeys?
>>
Rolled 2, 4, 1, 3, 5 = 15

>>23693770
Last night, I rode out and showed the tribesmen the strength of my Iron ... they've since sworn themselves to me.

I also like the idea of paying him a bit but certainly not more than 1 wealth, maybe with the hint of a long-term relationship if I find him suitable.
>>
>>23693938
I don't know, it doesn't really seem like the kind of thing that can be kept secret for much time at all, and I doubt our enemies are as local enough for them to be used for such a purpose.
>>
>>23693412

Heh, that's funny because the Kingsguard were actually there to keep Rhaegar and Lyanna under house/tower arrest by order of the king for plotting and seeking support among the great houses to remove him from the throne during the tournament of Harrenhall.
>>
>>23693836
>>23693866
(Korbis is your steward, this is Jonah.)
"Since my fight with the Chief of the Hill tribes, I've brought them under my banner as subjects. This is Luuk, one of my sworn banner-chiefs. Luuk, this is Jonah, a minstrel and tale teller."

Jonah looks at you, then at Luuk, and then he laughs. It's startlingly high pitched, almost like the large man giggles.

"Oh my. That's splendid. Oh." He wipes a tear from his eye. "Some of the more stuck up Vale lords are going to shit themselves when they hear this. Anyone else, I'd say they'd be a pariah. But you! You, I can sell doing this and it working."

>>23693948
Luuk regales Jonah with the tale of the previous day. Jonah listens for a while, and his mouth slowly drops open.
"My LORD! I could have this tale ringing through the Seven Kingdoms in two month's time! People could know you as William Bordain, the Law-Bringer! Give me a week to work the tale out a little, maybe set it to meter, and I can have it around the kingdom by the time you get to the fete!"

>>23693907
He might be basing it off the fact that it's two thousand for a trained maester, and he's counting himself as half a maester.

>>23693951
There is a significant difference between wearing a PIN of a set color, and wearing clothes. The pin means it's part of the house's heraldry.
...Speaking of, if this man studied as a maester, he may know houses with purple in their sigil.
>>
>>23693938
I want to. If he is honest then it make a wonderful story and should give us a huge bump to our influence, and if he is not then we get a chance to send the message to our mysterious enemies that we are not to be fucked with.
>>
>>23694024

Seems like we should ask him what he knows about the pin of that sort.

I do hope he isn't a backstabber, because i am genuinely enjoying him.
>>
>>23694024
I say we offer him 500 Golden Stags and perhaps offer him a position within the keep or something. I believe he could be useful
>>
>>23694024

Suddenly I like this guy better. Tell him that we were originally going to throw him out and be done with it, but now we are actually considering his offer seriously.
>>
>>23694024
Hm.
It's not like we're exactly strapped for cash, are we?
Let's have someone bring out those five hundred bear coins, ask him if he recognizes them, and then ask him if he'd be willing to accept five hundred up front, as kind of a trial thing and then the other five hundred after the fete if we see results?
>>
>>23693938
>>23694036

Its more of a pacification of the hill tribes.
>>
>>23694096

That sort of defeats the purpose of having him travel the land and speak on our behalf without looking like we ordered it.

I say we give him the full amount and furthermore if he does well we say he could have a home in our 'court'.

And ask him about the Pin and show him one of the Coins.
>>
>>23694151
thats sort of what I meant actually. I also like the idea of 500 now 500 later and a position at court
>>
>>23694151
Alright, I'm down, let's grill him a bit more then get our philanthropism on.
>>
>>23694024
Alright, I vote we let him rest at our castle (cold and grim though Morderengrad, The Keep of the Child-Butchering Madman be). Extend him our hospitality and then turn him away with 200 dragons for his trouble. Be sure to comment on the fact that while we appreciate his offer and would love to pay him as he deserves, we have other plans (oooh mystery and suspense) on our mind right now.

Our story is good enough that I see him making it into an epic regardless but no one in the seven kingdoms discounts the power of a minstrel. I can't see our character haggling over price so I don't want to do that but 200 (and the strong potential for more in the future) would certainly incline him to speak well of us.
>>
>>23694167

How about we do it like this proposal.

>>23694133

Five hundred up front, more after a while and he does well, alongside that we say that if he does well enough, he seems likeable enough that we would like him in our court.

After all having someone not seeing us as the Evil Bastard William but as Had No Other Choice Willian, is the sort of thing that makes us sort of more 'nice' than usual, eh even if we were planning on killing him if we felt he wasn't good enough.
>>
>>23694167

Eh, invite him to stay a few months have him travel with us to the Eyrie and then pay him 500 for his service. The will be delighted for the chance to visit the capital of the Vale.
>>
>>23694151
>>23694167
I think 1000 is far too much but 2 wealth is reasonable. We could do that
>>
>>23694217

Eh, the general cost of an Artisan is 10 Wealth, actually.

Think of this guy as us buying an Artisan.

http://pastebin.com/46BLMQ3M

>Artisan
>Requirements – Hall or larger defensive structure or Small town or larger population center.
>Cost – 10 Wealth
>Time – 1d6+1 Months unless the craftsmen is native to your lands.

>An artisan is a master craftsmen, able to perform many different tasks with many different bonuses.

Let's hire him. 10 Wealth for an Artisan is the usual price -- except this one came to us, so we don't even have to wait for him or anything!

So yeah. Let's not be stingy.
>>
>>23694267
I am for recruiting him but I still believe 5 wealth is a bit much unless our influence goes up by a shit ton because of him....
>>
>>23694167
>>23694151
>>23694133

Swayed by his skill, you call Korbis, and have him bring the man 500 gold dragons (Stags are the Silver coin) now, and if you see results by the fete, you'll give him another 500 (wealth reduced by 2)

Jonah seems ecstatic that you accepted, so much so that he doesn't question your request about the pin.

"A purple Pin, milord? Ummmm. There's only...14 houses in all Westeros with purple in their sigil. It's fairly uncommon. You've got the Dalts from Dorne; Dondarrion, Hasty and Swygert from the Stormlands; Brax, Payne, Peckledon and Plumm form the Westerlands; Terrick form the Riverlands; Wynch from the Iron Islands; Locke and Woolfield from the North; Farring from the Crownlands; and of course Belmore."

He looks at the coin for a minute.
"This is an odd coin, where'd you get it?"
>>
>>23694267
>>23694209

Again you are sort of missing the point. If we want to use him to full effect hiring him is the worst way to go about it.

What we want is to give him cash, a good story (that we just did) and let him go about Westeros, spreading our deeds far and wide.

That increases our renown and influence, whilst not being directly connected to us. What you are proposing is basically turning him into our 'Bard'.
>>
>>23694223
What? No.

The whole point is for him to travel ahead and spread our tale before we arrive
>>
>>23694259

Like I said, the *usual* cost of an Artisan -- a Blacksmith, Architect, Banker, Craftsman, Harbormaster, Vintner, Shipwright, Foreman, Glassblower, or Jeweler -- is 10 Wealth.

A Bard for 10 Wealth sounds right.

Except we didn't need to spend 1d6+1 months spreading news about us wanting a Bard; we just had one come offer his services to us.

No need to insult him by offering him 5 Wealth. (Or even 2.)

I say we hire him!
>>
>>23694267
Huh, I did not know artisans were that expensive.
In that case, it's almost a bargain.
Plus aren't we sitting on rich lands in terms of gold and iron mines?
It's not like we're struggling to put food on the table.
>>
>>23694285
From Oskar Stone, apparently he had a wealthy benefactor, though he didn't know who or why.
>>
>>23694285
"We recovered it after dealing with the raids by the hill tribes. Someone was paying them with these coins to attack my lands. So tell me what do you know of them?"

Also guy you know this may also be page being a cool guy and giving us a super cheap measter right?
>>
>>23694285

Er, since I suck at maps and houses... Where is House Belmore from?

Also -- which of the houses he listed, would be from the Vale? Or near us, anyway?
>>
>>23694316

With most of the tribes bending the knee, it's not like we can't recover some of that wealth later on. It may help in the long run to have him try to fix Bordain's name up.
>>
>>23694355

Yeah, one of the big players in the vale.
>>
>>23694367
Not to mention one of the tribesman told us of a gold vein on there lands.
>>
>>23694355

"House Belmore? The like, 4th richest house in the Vale?

Your neighbors to the south, who used to own this land?"

AND WITH THAT, I CALL IT A NIGHT.

Feel free to keep talking everyone, but I have the elderly to care for before I retire.

>>23694352
Actually, I'm trying a new holding idea. I probably made it too cheap, but when you guys wanted to throw him on the street, I made the deal sweeter.
>>
After Jonah leaves, we should call a meeting with Korbis, the Bloodsmiths, and anyone else we could call our inner staff, and ask them their opinion on recent events.
I mean this is quite a change from two years of spiteful brooding, and I'd hate to alienate anyone who's stuck with us so far.
>>
>>23694285
Thought I'd just remind everyone of our character a little. We're not exactly hero material.

His Goal is Wealth.
His Motivation is Hatred.
His Vice is Avarice.
His Virtue is Courageous.
He is a Villain seen as Mad by most of the populace despite his great Victory.
>>
>>23694398

Wait, are we swore directly to the Eyrie or we do it through another house?
>>
Anyway.

I think another thing we can do, is show our generosity -- basically, wine and dine. And be generous about it.

So, yeah. Showing generosity is good. 'specially since we're getting him for a good price.

>>23694398

Ah. I hadn't remembered those guys from the earlier threads. (Sorry! It feels a bit like nobody seems to be able to remember some specific or key detail in your past threads...)
>>
>>23694417

>>23694417
Have to spend money to make money
>>
>>23694404
Very good idea. We established that our Bloodsmiths are the only thing we're truly pround of. Let's act like it.
>>
>>23694417
We're probably not changing the 'mad' part because holy shit did you see what we did in one day?
But it seems like we might mitigate the 'villain' element.
Plus I'd say improving our reputation is the kind of thing that could also improve our coffers.

So. This is new information to us, then.

Apparently somebody else used to hold these lands... Huh, I had sorta ignored the initial reason for the -3 Law; I figured we were just wildly unpopular or something...
