Hello /tg/! Updated news: Thirty-two stores in 18 states, two Canadian provinces, the UK and Sweden have agreed to take copies of Engine Heart!

Because a few stores have asked me to run a demonstration or provide other literature, I'm putting together a micro-module with a simple premise and premade robots. A print copy of the micromod will be sent to each store along with the other books, and also available as a pdf on the wiki.

One of the stretch goals will be a line of Joints & Jivers miniatures made for POD on Shapeways (a 3D printing site). Since /tg/ is the best board, I wanted to see if anyone had suggestions for specific characters. Descriptions, MS Paint doodlings, whatever. So far we've got a Square in a suit, a Charles Bronson-type Detective, Afrodite (foxxy soul sister), Willow (New Age girl), an Evel Knievel-type Motorhead, and Charlie (Charles Manson).

I also pinged an artist about producing art for a GM screen, which will be another stretch goal beyond the run of J&J.

Before the J&J minis, however, is a set of 28mm modular robot parts (torsos, treads, arms, cameras, tools, etc) so players can mix and match to create their own robots.

Anyway, if you want to see Engine Heart on shelves near you, let me know and I'll see what I can do!

Presenting the Charmaton, or at least the head from one. It can roll along the ground at an impressive 1 km/h, but it's pretty helpless otherwise. However, it's extremely well-spoken and knows an incredible amount about a lot of different topics. Luckily its battery was in the head or else it wouldn't even be able to charge. There's been some hints and rumors that complete hardcover editions would be available through the kickstarter... I've mentioned Engine Heart a few times to the owner of my FLGS but I haven't really pressured him to pick up on the offer, just more or less hinted. Before I go and start really guilting him into it, will any full editions be available to retailers, or is that something only through the kickstarter? It would kinda suck to put all the pressure on a store owner only to find out I couldn't get all the content...

Printing costs to produce the hardcover collection will put it outside of normal distribution channels - the only way to get one will be during the KS proper.

Here's the deal, though: retailers will be getting copies of the books for free, as seen here >>23848111 . That's the whole point of the KS - to get Engine Heart out to a wider audience.

Engine Heart, the Power and Light expansion module, Joints & Jivers, and maybe even Rivet.

>Was there an actual Kickstarter at one point?
This is part one of the KS: getting enough stores to agree to take copies so when I start the actual KS I have a list of FLGSs ready to receive them. I'm going to have a run of 250 copies of Engine Heart and another 250 copies of Power and Light printed up (and 250 copies of Joints & Jivers as the first stretch goal). Stores that agree to take copies will get them for free - the KS will be to pay for the printing and shipping.

Other stretch goals include the robutt GM screen, miniatures (first for EH, then J&J and finally Modempunk), and some other stuff that I don't want to promise until I get talent lined up to produce it.

The actual Kickstarter is planned to start at the beginning of April.

If you played up the idie and kid friendly aspect you might be able to see the idea to
Little Island Comics in Toronto.
(make it attention Andrew Butcher)
They specialize in comics for kids but this might sell for them as well.
Snakes and Lattes is a place in the city that allows patrons to play boardgames and also just opened up a larger sales portion. It is one of the first in the city and is always looking of something fun.
The Labyrinth (also in TO) is another possibility and 401 Games might also be an option.

>I have been wondering about how one would go about getting minis made for a game. It feels like it would be really expensive and run the risk of putting the budget into the red but lots of kickstarters do it. How do you go about getting minis made for a game?

The way I'm doing it is: I found a guy who makes 3D models for stuff on Shapeways. He was involved with a company making a line of historical battle minis, and his work is really good. If the KS makes it that far, he'll make the models on commission, then I'll put the designs up on Shapeways and anyone that wants them can order them to be made. The minis themselves are pretty cheap to produce.

the word Free, even if it has a little asterisk after it, is always welcome in the life of a small business owner, especially one that gets by on the margins that hobby/comic/geekery shops tend to live on in these days of being squeezed by publishers on one side and the internet on the other.

This is the first Engine Heart thread

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/5075043/
And this is the second.

The rule system was in place, but it was still pretty bare-bones. A lot of the attribute combo pools hadn't been developed yet, and some of the attributes weren't fully implemented (Buffer, for example, started out being called Sensor Strength and didn't have as much to do with the character as the other attributes). There were also fewer features and defects, including some that were dropped for being out of place with the rest of the rules.

I've found that presentation is the key to getting people interested in looking at it with enough scrutiny to give you good feedback. A good-looking layout is much nicer to read and helps ease people into the reading. Even a cover image helps.

Wait a sec, Viral. You're printing off the books and if they sell, you'll collect 50% of the profits, right?

How does this work? What incentive does the store have to sell them? And tell you that you that they have sold them? Are you thinking long term re-stocking? Or are you thinking that the supplements are going to net profit? How are you covering the initial printing/shipping costs of the store copies?
>>
>>23848066
This is cool!
>>
>>23882716
>What incentive does the store have to sell them?
Most of the stores that have said 'yes' have an indie-friendly reputation, and almost all of them have the 50% consignment cover price deal going with other indie publishers. They're on the honor system, but the whole point of this is to get Engine Heart out to a bigger audience than 4chan / the Internet. The KS will be to pay for a run of 250 copies of the rulebook and 250 copies of Power & Light (and if the stretch goal is reached, 250 copies of J&J). Plus the micromod demo game that each store will get with the books. If any of them actually sell I might be able to pay for a second run, but that's pretty nebulous right now. Fingers crossed, hope for the best.

Also, hi, Viral! Did you ever try to hit up the FLGSs in DE? I didn't see them on the list. I believe it was Our Game Table and Days of Knights.

How do mice do NO damage? Ever been bitten by a mouse? My sister has a pet mouse. They are not friendly, and have lots of sharp, point teeth.
>>
>>23884698

The Brave Little Toaster, The Iron Giant and Wall-E are probably the holy trinity of robot movies (for EH).

Short Circuit is probably St. John. John had his moments, but sometimes he was kinda boring.

It's a robot mouse, bro.

... and it's fragile and probably highly endangered.

Are these organic mice represented through robot based descriptors or genuine devices that were mass produced before mankind disappeared?

I'm cool with using this for either however.

Movies: Wall-E, Brave Little Toaster, Short Circuit, Cherry 2000, Bicentennial Man (kinda)
Stories: 'There Will Come Soft Rains', 'But Who Can Replace A Man?', 'I, Row-Boat'

I already emailed Days of Knights, but I just sent one to Our Game Table. Thanks!

Hey i was just about to mention Runaway as a good robot movie.

Its perfect for EH simply because the robots in it are exactly like the type of robots you would create in EH. Watch it merely for robot ideas.

Viral. Whenever the KS gets off the ground, you might consider dropping a hint to the guys at Ain't It Cool. They have a table-top roundup every once in awhile. And given Harry Knowles' love of The Iron Giant and Wall-E, it could be the sort of thing they talk about.

OK, hot off the presses, it's a rough draft of the micro-module that will come with every FLGS's shipment of books.

It doesn't have a name yet, but it's basically a GO HERE quest. The premade player robots must navigate a parking lot full of potholes, weeds and worse, as they try to find a rumored charging dock.

Added to micromod:

>Dialogue quotes for all the robots (and the mouse)

>EverPet explanation included in Barkzie's description: EverPets are typically created using the rules for drones, as described in the Attendant Swarm feature. They have 19 points for attributes and features (instead of the normal 100 points), and may have a maximum of 10 points of defects. Note that at least 13 points must be spent on attribute ratings to ensure that every rating is at least 1.

>Tragic Backstory added: If the PRs manage to engage the ReCyclone in conversation, they may learn that it has the Rare Model defect and has been searching for another unit like itself to replace worn-out components. Until now it has made due using looted scrap metal as a stopgap solution, but any robots that located a deactivated ReCyclone for it would have its gratitude.

I browse /tg/ for the pictures, I'm not gonna lie. I don't entirely understand what's going on here, but I see robots and an indie project and I can't help but feel all warm inside.

I'd shoot this by my local FLGS (I learned that word today), but given that I personally wouldn't be buying/playing it there, I'm not sure if that's a good idea. Is it?
>>
>>23889945
The picture at the beginning of the thread is a link to a pdf copy of the game, if you want to play it *somewhere*.

You can go to the wiki and get a better idea of what the game is about and download some more stuff for it:
http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Engine_Heart

But I can give you an abridged version. Imagine Wall-E, but with more robots on Earth. All the people are gone (Dead? Raptured? Uploaded? Whatever the GM decides). What's left is a World Without Us scenario where the buildings, bridges and power stations are starting to fall apart. Most of the big robots have already stopped working, but some of the little robots are still running around trying to fulfill their programming. This leads to a lot of conflict situations when robots have different goals.

On top of this, some supercomputer AIs are still active, and they're in charge of entire cities, power grids, and the like, so they have a lot of sway even though they don't have physical bodies outside of their computer banks. Some of them have obedient robot workers to act as emissaries, but they're always on the lookout for more servants, and most of them have superiority complexes when it comes to who should be in charge of what during this "ongoing time of crisis".

If you tell me the name of your FLGS, I can send them an email and save you the trouble (although it'd be cool if you told them too - better chance of them agreeing that way).

I hope this clears things up a little!

How about an Engine Heart custom d10?

You know, to fill up the printable volume and shame your friends for using regular dice...

Not sure if srs or missed old thread

That's actually gonna be a limited-edition KS prize. I talked to the guy at Gamescience that handles custom orders, and will probably order 100 precision aquamarine gem d10s with this icon replacing the 0 face.

So there'll be 10 sets available for people that want them. Hadn't really considered printed dice...

A run of 100 dice was what I considered feasible, but if they all disappear and people want more, I could probably increase the order. The custom dice are pretty expensive (as in, the creation and shipping alone is $75 for a set of 10 when they're ordered in a bulk run of 100).

It would be more of a "here's a little treat for dumping a bunch of cash into this" instead of "here's a way for you to fill up your dice bag".

Some friends had also suggested swapping out the broken-robot icon for the 1 face. I guess that since the production cost is the same no matter how weird the faces get, maybe I should do that. I'm just worried about them becoming unreadable if too many faces aren't numerical characters.
>>
>>23909099
I say just use the robot face. It's more...Engine Heart-y.
>>
>>23909099

100 is not a "bulk run".

There have been several icons made for EH; these were all inspired by the icons found on shipping packages (fragile, do not stack, do not lift without aid, etc). I know someone upthread asked about artwork, but this is the closest the game gets. I think it helps keep the feeling that we're getting a glimpse of a future technical manual where icons like this are commonplace and require no explanation.

Anyway, point is, if people had suggestions for a current or NEW icon to use on the dice, I'm listening.
>>
>>23909696
They're expensive as shit, though.

>>23909702
Don't think so, huh...
>>
>>23909725
Doesn't matter, 100 is not very many. A bulk run would be tens of thousands at the very least.

And "Robot on fire!" is a better 1 than the broken robot, I think.

Why not use the D10 as first goodie, like for a $10 investment. Owning one of those could be the hook to pull people into the KS. 100 is a very low number. 1,000 would be minimum imo. This will become a collector piece and the pride of every ragtag dice bag.

But it's still just an ordinary D10 with custom faces. For a really cool piece you have to 3D print. The design from >>23907912 is pretty close to what I feel would best convey the EH spirit: Clunky, pseudo functional surfaces and shapes that come together to develop elegant functionality, a post modern pretend Bauhaus utility. Form follows fictional function.

Design 3-5 individual D10s like that and use them as a high investment bonus, 3D printed in metal. It will be the most awesome dice any of us will ever own. And you can link the model on the wiki so people can pay horrendous prices to get their own printed a few months after the KS finishes.

With Gamescience precision dice, yeah. Which aren't really "ordinary" anyway.

This guy >>23910235 >>23910301 is saying the funds could be spent on commissioning someone to make a 3d template and upload it to Shapeways so people could have their own dice made to order with SW 3d printers.

>>23909799
I thought changing the 10 side would be better, since in EH, rolling a 10 means really good things, but rolling a 1 is usually no worse than rolling a 2 or a 3.
>>
So, Viral, any new stores come through recently?
>>
>>23910662
I still think that a slightly cracked robot is the most appropriate icon for EH.

So, the precision dice have to be a limited edition pledge level thing? Like "Pledge $80 and get a book and a set of 5 dice".

You could try contacting Chessex to see if they can do custom d10s. We had a fundraiser that used their custom d6's and it raised a fair bit of money. It would still be expensive, but might be cheaper than Gamescience, possibly cheap enough to have it as a stretch reward. Then you could have Robot on Fire (1) for the Gamescience and Gear (0) for the Chessex. Chessex did, however, run out of stock (or something) and took a long time to get the dice over.

OK, so the artist I propositioned to make the Engine Heart GM screen said he's not taking commissions anymore (or at least not in the near future), I'll put this out here and see if any of you folks can help.

This is the (obviously rough) idea I had for the screen. It'd be 8.5"x25" (a standard trifold screen). The image is a city street as seen from the far sidewalk. A row of stereotypical white-picket-fenced houses with identical porches, front door and window configurations, etc, but all of them would be in various states of disrepair, with one house flat-out burned to the ground. In the background, the hazy skyscrapers of the City can be seen. It wouldn't have to be as straight-on of a perspective as I MSPainted it, but this is the general layout.

Continued in next post.

There's going to be a slight change in the rules for the "second printing" of Engine Heart (along with a few clarifications).

Robots with the Limbless defect will not be able to make repair checks, either on themselves or other robots. This was kind of an obvious thing already, but it should probably be stated directly.

Because of this, the Model Error defect will also be amended to read "Robots with the Limbless defect do not gain any points for the Model Error defect."

I'm proud of you for doing this, but I don't like your game and won't be contributing. I also think that you could just set yourself up a website and link to it instead of pandering quite so much.

Sage to avoid bumping advertising, even if it is grassroots advertising
>>
>>23919887

I also agree that a website beyond the 1d4chan page is in order. as for pandering and advertising that has been discussed to death and most threads about /tg/ related products could be considered that. As long as people are enjoying the thread who cares if it helps sell a product, it is a product we want to be sold.
>>
I understand that people who don't care for cute robots see the regular Viral threads and get annoyed. But just weigh it against the flood of 'This is how I _', Explain Alignment, Fetish Quests, Edition Wars, and gimicky nonsense Kickstarter threads, and consider whether your annoyance is actually at the thread, or at people enjoying something you have no access to.

>>23923460
It all goes to Viralzuela.

But seriously, this is about spreading the word. There is no profit. If all this goes perfectly it'll pay $1,000. Find a game designer who'll work 7 years for less than $12/month, even with a yearly $30 bonus from Lulu, I dare ya!

>>23923468
Well Viral has been slow with updates, as the flow of feedback is more of a trickle you get when you squeeze /tg/ for a day with constant bumps. So I don't see the issue, unless you are projecting your GW or WOTC experience.
And the newest version will always be available for free on the wiki.
The real issue here is people who like to play games like this but don't frequent /tg/, and the money it costs to get books printed so they can look at them.
This is no corporate intern bumping shitthreads for attention. This is a game designer answering questions every week and willing to send free profit to your FLGS if you tell him its name. It is an enthusiast project with no profit in sight done out of love for the game through dying commercial vectors out of nostalgia.

So if you hate this you might as well start buying 40k minis, because that is the retail alternative.

It's only been four years. First draft was posted in June of 2009.
>>
>>23925387
>It's only been four years
How much of that 4 years was really spent hammering at this game? I often wonder about this when people say something has been X years in the making. I mean I will totally be picking up a copy from the kickstarter and tell my friends to do so, but I always wonder about the man hours per week or month when indie people make claims of things being in development for years and years.
>>
>>23926428
>How much of that 4 years was really spent hammering at this game?

Quite a lot, when I really think about it. I wrote the drone rules for ArtifIce over a month-long period in late 2008, then started tweaking the system through the spring of 2009. After the first version was finalized at the end of the summer, I playtested it as much as I could over the next year, which led to the legitimate Deluxe Model Edition in the summer of 2010. Since then I've been listening to podcasts and scouring the net for writeups of actual play, looking for hiccups or places where players or GMs were unsure of what to do, and playtesting it as much as I can.

I'd say a rough estimate of the total involvement time is at least a few hundred hours on my end. I've made plenty of other games in the meantime, but they're tiny one-off games that were just diversions between Engine Heart development.
