Of course, it's not all upsides. You're grounded for the time being, for lack of an aircraft. While you kind of like the downtime, it seems like the paperwork you've been trying to outrun has been doing it's best to keep up- there's a small mountain of reports to fill out, plus requests for more performance reviews on the Wyvern from Chance-Vought. No new letters from Konstantina yet, though you're under orders to write one to her, you remember.

That said, though, there's other stuff you'd rather do. Like retrieve your motorcycle from your uncle's place. You've got a friend in town who owes you a favor, and you could call it in and have him drive you out to your uncle's, no problem. You'd just about kill to be able to go out for a ride, and how often are you going to get the chance when they deliver the improved Wyvern? It'll be test flight after test flight after test flight- who knows when you'll get another shot at a 48 hour pass?

Or go to Santa's- how long has it been since you had a burger? Too long, that's how long. You could go enjoy the pool- the twins are already over there for sure, and you think you heard Slider say something about going too. It looks fairly nice- you can see it from the upstairs window- but you haven't gone over to swim just yet.

You could always bring along company if you head out on a pass, though you're not sure where Ice got off to- or even if she's free- and Katya's been a bit overwhelmed, so you're not sure how she'd handle going out. Then again, maybe some time out would do one of them good- Ice could use a break, even if just for a day or two, and Katya just misses home- maybe showing her some of the things around here, even if it is just open highway and a roadside diner- would help.

Of course, you could just as easily head out alone- Santa's used to seeing you come in to eat by yourself. And you can't say that spending a day out on the highway by yourself isn't a really attractive idea right now, and you'd like to see your uncle and aunt, even if just for a couple hours. You'd have company at the pool regardless, but lounging in the sun probably isn't such a bad idea either- you do need to work on your tan, after all.

Your friend, thank god, is a civilian pilot- one of the ones that flies because they love to and doesn't have to blow things up when they do. Must be nice, though their sluggish speed is a massive turnoff for you. If it's not an old warbird, you've got no interest. Even better, he flies out of Montgomery field, just five miles south.

First thing's first though- your weekend pass. Ice, ever thoughtful, issued them and left them on the kitchen table- signed and ready to go. You notice that Maverick and Goose's passes are already gone- you've got no clue where they went, but you're pretty sure you won't see them this weekend.

Grabbing yours, you fold it and drop it inside your wallet, writing out a quick note and some contact numbers in case something comes up- like a recall. You also grab Katyas, since you plan to invite her along. That accomplished, you begin your next task- finding Katya.

Truth be told, a long run out would do her some good. She's been massively homesick- and it's hard to blame her, really. She ran away from the Soviet military to... do what? See nothing but military bases and combat with you instead? It's not hard to see how that'd be a major disappointment for her.

You find her outside on the back patio, reading a book far, far too large for you. That and you're pretty sure it's in Russian, anyway. She looks up when she hears your boots on the concrete, closing her book and marking her place with a finger.

The two of them talk a bit more while you call your friend, Red and call in your favor. He chuckles some. “This sure seems like a lot more than letting me couch surf for a month.” He says, jokingly.

Twenty minutes later, you're in the right hand seat of Red's Cessna T303, listening to the comforting drone of the props as you wing your way north to Redding- six hundred miles north, nine hours by ground, three by air.

The flight out is fairly quiet- Red asks about the war, how you're enjoying flying the 'fast jets' and tries to engage Katya in conversation some, failing miserably. “That was your cousin?” Katya asks, while you find a cab. The driver, with a full beard and wearing a turban, has a thick accent, but seems like a friendly guy. He helps Katya with her bag as you climb in.

You nod. “Yeah, that was Joe. His dad's a smokejumper for the state, and his mom works for the county sheriff's office.”

“She's not a witch?” Katya asks, sounding surprised.

You laugh and shake your head. “Nah. It runs in the family, sure, but I guess it missed her. I don't think Amy is either, but I'm not real sure.”

The drive up takes about fourty minutes- traffic being what it is. Your uncle's family lives outside of town on a small acreage- not quite a farm, but bigger than a plot in town. The cab driver pulls into the drive way and you hand him a twenty- telling him to keep the change gains you a big grin and a handshake.

Joe's sitting outside on the front step, and Rufus is sitting next to him, noticeably taller than Joe. Rufus is a big dog- standing almost to your stomach by himself.

“Is- is that a dog?” Katya asks, shocked.

“Pretty sure he's half tyrannosaurs rex actually.” You say, laughing. Joe stands up and Rufus looks over at him before pounding down the steps at you, his tounge hanging sideways out of his mouth.

Rufus, unlike your sister, knows exactly how to hit a person to knock them flat on their ass. He also knows how to open the fridge, get a beer, and eat those damn steaks you had set out, too. Dog geniuses are a blessing and a curse.

Having been in a brutal aircraft crash, you note it felt something like getting tackled by your dog, with all the air knocked out of your lungs by the force of the impact. Still, you can't help but laugh while Rufus licks your face, slobbering all over your aviators.

Eventually you struggle your way to your feet, still laughing, and shake Joe's hand.

“Hey Frank!” he says, handing you a towel with a grin. “I think your dog missed you.”

“Yeah, I think so too!” you say, laughing as you wipe off your face. Rufus is currently circling Katya, sniffing her, seeming to be at a loss. She's wearing your jacket, so she must be ok, but she's new people!

“Rufus! Behave.” You order, and he looks at you- then sits right next to Katya and leans into her, fishing for attention. Absently, she reaches down and scratches him behind the ears.

Joe's grin loses some of it's self-assurance. As he shakes Katya's hand. “P-Pleased to meet you, Ma'am.” he says.

You look over at your dog and grin. “He's a big baby, is what he is. If you're not careful, he'll try and crawl up in your lap.” You laugh. “I can't honestly advise letting him, he's pretty heavy.”

She looks over at you. “Do you think little Merlin could ride him as one does a horse?”

Still, he's probably your best friend, and could care less if you leave the toilet seat up- a fact that, in the end, made him superior to your ex-girlfriend.

Inside, the TV is tuned to MTV, which plays nothing but music videos, you guess. It's not really your thing, you're a big band and swing fan, almost unique in that among your peers. Still, you choke it down while chatting with Joe- about school, his plans to enlist, and what his folks are up to. His sister apparently wants to be a smokejumper like her old man, and you mentally wish her luck- they're crazier than you are.

You're interrupted by your Aunt. “Frank!” She exclaims, as you stand up and give her a hug. “If I'd have known you were coming I'd have cooked something!”

She eyes you critically. “You're really getting to thin, dear.”
