Gentlemen, the legend will never die. Here we will discuss the up and coming game, Song of Swords, which is to be the spiritual successor to the dead game Riddle of Steel. Our team of men has worked tirelessly under the direction of the old Fechtmaster John Galt himself, and we have recently confirmed that he will be himself returning to bring the good 'ol bloodsport back to /tg/.

The prior threads can be provided to those interested, and all questions will be answered by me, or by one of my associates. The temporary forums are also available at http://opaque.freeforums.net/index.cgi?board=general until such a time as our website is up and running.

Soon, the kickstarter will begin, and then the game will quickly find its way into the well-deserving hands of /tg/'s finest. Tonight, also, there will be a special event, a classic Fecht run by the old Slav himself, John Galt, who is making a return to show us the true strength of Steel.

So, raise your voices high, sharpen your swords, PUT YOUR GUNS ON, and join us in this feasting of swords!

I think it's the only Kickstarter I'll ever back. I want these guys to succeed. Wait until Galt's thread later today. He should be using a demo of the Song of Swords rules, so we can see where it is at this time.

Besides, the rules will be released for free whether the Kickstarter succeeds or fails. The money's actually going to improve the game, not fund its initial existence.

Alright, first up, we aren't going to be doing anything too crazy. Proficiencies will be old, Toughness will be old (the Hef actually get tougher if you run them through our system, which... They don't need to be tougher, let's just say that) and most of the rest will be recognizable to you.

However, the combat will have an additional, major component, albeit one that only matters in the first round: Orientation now has -three- possibilities instead of two. Offense, Cautious, and Defense. (Red/Yellow/Blue.)

Offense means, as before, you charge in with full intent of attacking.

Cautious, which is new, you move in prepared to attack or defend. If faced with Offense, Cautious becomes a Defensive stance, and if faced with Defense, Cautious becomes an Offensive stance. If faced with another Cautious result, the two circle and throw again, or the one with the higher Reflex may elect to become Offensive, and the other Defensive.

Defense means, as before, that you defend.

This is an important part of the game. For the sake of nostalgia, and our desire to produce a smoothe game, most-everything will use Old Riddle of Steel rules. In future fights, we will implement more and more of the new rules as we have them tested.

Very good, I believe I have everything. Tonight, our battle will be against the most debauched, depraved, and virulent of monsters, creatures both soulless and without empathy, who prey upon the races of men in all manners, consuming their flesh, destroying their livelihoods, and violating their women.

I am speaking of course of the Hef. Those of you who were expecting an ethnic joke, I assure you, it was a trial.

On a certain hillock in a distant land, unfamiliar to all those who now fight in its defense, three officers take view of their situation.

Bent over the map of the village is Rade Sark. An elf from the Zellish tribes who prowl the oceans, he is the captain of the vessel which brought this unhappy party here to cover the retreat of a tide of refugees fleeing the Hef invasion. "For the Seven's sake," he spits bitterly, as he realizes that the circular structure around the village is in fact not a palisade, but a tea stain from a mug.

To his right, peering out of the window at the tide of fur and slavering claws that are even now cresting the horizon, is Sandoval Sulla, scion of a noble, but famously ill-fortuned family, and a knight in service to the Empress of Illegon. He has never fought a Hef before. He relishes the opportunity. A member of his family has fought and died in every war ever fought on the penninsula of his homeland, and so, he figures, this distant land holds no danger to him.

And in the corner, sliding a smooth stone down the edge of a sidesword, is little Sarah Gizka, silently pondering how she got here, after so deftly evading dying like an idiot for so many years. She looks up, and assesses her company. She says nothing, but sharpens faster.

"In battle," Sulla said, "buying time for the innocent. For those we cherish, I would gladly die."

"There is always a way out." Gizka said. The two men turned to glance at her. She rarely spoke. "Always."

The three exited the building, and saw the tide as it approached. Their band organized itself quickly, taking up positions between the buildings, preparing to hold out until the bitter end.

A javelin landed near Rade's feet. Something warm splashed over his face. He didn't open his eyes. For him, nothing existed except the burning rush of the Rakia pouring down his throat. He held the bottle aloft for a long time, filtering out the sound of the missile exchange and the cries of the wounded.

He returned the world, and tossed the bottle to his side. The Hef were pouring down upon them, but they were staggered, they had no concept of logistics, or organized movement. Those who were here were tired, and eager. He drew his sword, and stepped forward to meet the death he had so long fled.

Well well! The Hef has struck the Breastplate. Rade's TO of 5 and his armor value of 5 make is total AV 10 on the chest.

The Hef inflicts Str+1 damage with its claws, and has a margin of success of 1, making it Strength 10 hit precisely.

The Hef's claw hammers through Rade's guard, and its bladed talons screech audibly across his breastplate. He spins with the blow, to find himself facing a second attack!

The Hef has the Agressive stance still, because it hit, though it did no damage. It declares a second attack with its remaining 4 dice. Because it hit, it is now at its optimal range, and suffers no penalty. Rade, however, will suffer a 1 die cost if he attempts to parry, because his sword is inside its optimum range.
