Any love for robo-synth voices? Took one of the default ones from fruity loops and sent it across my arduino and through some miscellaneous sound chips to make it more lo-fi, then brought it back into fruity loops and gave it some resonance.

It's a subtle difference.

Character Generator Guy here, how did the rough copy work?
Gonna start on Features and Defects now and then work on actually making it pretty. Also do you guys prefer a Microsoft or Open Office format?
I would make a page but once again, since I do not know what new material would bring I'm keeping it simple and easily modified with future content.
>>

I thought I had OpenOffice, but I don't, apparently, and Excel claims that there are errors in the file... so, not sure?

>>
>>24271482

It's not a problem to port it to Excel but the file formats don't like each other, I just understand not everyone has a copy of Office to work with and wanted to make it so it wasn't necessary to get the use of it since OpenOffice is a free program that does pretty much the same shit at the slight of being ever so slightly less user friendly.
Give a sec and I'll port it and post a link to my dropbox.

for some odd reason, my camera won't macro focus now. Anyway, the toothed pars are tabs. They bend back allowing you to put glue on them and adhere the curved section of paper to it to make the half cylinder shape you see on the red bot here. Parts marked as layering are optional.

Now that we've got the dealer-level backer tiers, we've had to stop adding stores to the Big List. Unfortunately, that hasn't stopped people from asking me if I can contact their store and get them to partner up, but I don't really like the idea of cold-mailing stores to tell them to back this KS.

SOOOO... here's the dealer poster that the stores already on the Big List got. The QR code directs you to the Engine Heart KS page. If your store isn't on the list but you'd like to see Engine Heart on their shelves, give them a copy of the poster and let them know about the dealer tiers.

Being featured on the Staff Picks seems to be helping out a lot - we're only $115 away from where we used to be!

I'd better get writing. In Transit is almost complete, and I've started work on the KS-exclusive minimod. The KS-only one will be the minimod with the Special Guest Appearances by the ten bots made for the Robot Roll Call (which are sadly all gone!)

Uhhh... I don't know! There are only two left, which is pretty shocking to me. Honestly, this whole thing is pretty shocking to me. I was expecting this to flop, but it's been on fire since it launched. The Staff Picks thing is just chrome on the casing.

There's one problem I'd definitely suggest fixing. When your robot is size 1 you get a +1 to dexterity, and when your robot is size 5, you get a +1 to strength.

>>
>>24279998

Well, only if you put up a very limited number at the increased price. Otherwise the people who bought in early might feel somewhat miffed that their early support is devalued. It is an incentive to support early. If you were to add another hundred or more at a few dollars extra, I don't think it would be catastrophic.
>>
>>24280213
It is when you could just add more at the $99 level. You could bullshit some thing about limited orders, I guess, but Kickstart tends to operate on at least the illusion of good faith all round.

>>
>>24280671
>You keep referring to this person, yet I don't think you've ever explained who they are or what they do.

Basically, he crunches the math for me and advises me on what steps to take. He's a very old and dear friend of mine from meatspace, and he's been working in the gaming industry for the last decade, so he knows a lot about how stuff works, and he's got a lot of industry contacts that we're making use of.

When someone says "Hey Viral, can you do X?", I ask him what he thinks, he runs the numbers, and tells me how viable it is. He was instrumental in putting the tiers together, and he was the one who figured out how much we needed to cover both the actual cost of printing and shipping the books to FLGSs, and how much we'd have to set as a total goal to cover all the other stuff like backer rewards.

He's made a few appearances in EH threads - he posts under the name Prime Minister.
>>

I do? I mean, yes, I do!

Now that we have a very strong likelihood of success, I'm going to be working on the numbers for some of the stretch goals we have planned that aren't just new modules. I will see what different options we can provide for getting more color HC rulebooks available. They are much more popular than we envisioned. I am waiting on some quotes from a new printer first, and that will give me a better idea. I hope to have most of this worked out by Sunday.

You can also change your pledge later on. For example, one could pledge $1307 to push the campaign over the top, only to revoke it entirely a day later.

What a glorious dick move that would be.
>>
>>24283515
If you pledged enough to put it over the top I think KS/Amazon automatically locks the pledges in, even if the KS has more time to go.
>>
>>24283650
the card isn't hit till the campaign expires. I know for a fact that pledges can be canceled after the funding level is achieved. Just not sure if dipping below the target right before they pull the trigger would prevent everybody else's stuff from getting hit.
>>
>>24283681
>I know for a fact that pledges can be canceled after the funding level is achieved.
Really? The Backer Questions on KS's FAQ says this:

>When is my card charged?
>If the project you’re backing is successfully funded, your card will be charged when the project reaches its funding deadline. If the project does not reach its funding goal, your card is never charged. That's why we call them pledges.

If that's the case, it's not very clear.
>>
>>24283735
Oh wait... derp, I've gone blind from statting robots all day.

Never mind.
>>
>>24283314

Hah, I suppose I could. I'm first gonna focus on actually getting stat selection working, then I'll be figuring out a method for populating a feature list. I'm probably gonna go with XML lists, and whenever a new book or source material comes out with new defects and features, someone (probably me) will have to make an XML file for the new book. Campaign Settings will have check boxes for all the available books, check off the ones you want to use...

Theoretically, DMs who know XML could make files with custom features and such also.

After I get that working, then yeah. We can talk random bot gen.
>>
>>24283735

There was a flurry of adjustments right before Busty Barbarian Bimbos finished fundraising, including several decreases and some cancelations. From my inbox on hour fifteen minutes before the campaign closed up:

"K***** B**** canceled their $30.00 pledge.

$12,675.68 is currently pledged toward the $2,500.00 goal."

Name redacted to protect the innocent. Considering the pace this campaign is going at, I wouldn't worry about it closing below the target, just don't consider every pledge to be money-in-the-bank until it actually is. Also a fair number of credit card transactions are bound to fail.

Anyway, under the city hall we discovered a fallout shelter, empty except for a few cots, a diary mentioning that people were evacuating toward the coast, and the corpse of an old man, apparently too sickly to go with the other evacuees.
Barry (having failed his humancon roll to conceptualize death) was ecstatic at having found a new audience member.

He played his full four-hour show for the mummified skeleton.

Dissatisfied with the amount of applause he received, Barry decided to take the corpse with us. In addition to getting the band back together, he had decided to find the humans so he could play for them. They would LISTEN to his show this time. They would APPRECIATE his music. Even if they had to be chained to their seats for the rest of their lives.
The cymbal-monkey approved of this idea, as he was by now settling into (read: forcing the DM to accept) his back story as a CIA spy camera turned childs toy. The butcher-bots player had left the game, while I and the other repair bot had too low humancon scores to see any problems with this.
So on we went...

The group barely managed to roll enough Realitycon to realize that it was about to rain, so we took shelter in a partly collapsed and overgrown church near a strip mall.

Bary set to tuning his banjo (pointlessly, it had no strings, the music came from a speaker in his chest) while the monkey started a new project: he wanted to turn shreddie into his personal tank.

Us repair bots, happy to have something to do, began work.

We already new that this was no ordinary office paper shredder. No, this was a soviet-made industrial grade paper shredder/copier/scanner/fax machine. Built of heavy steel, it practically already was a tank. Adorned only by the close-together and unmarked "scan" and "shred" paper ports and a barely visible hammer-and-sickle logo that had been hastily painted over long ago.

we started by welding some of the churches wrought-iron fence to his sides, spikes pointing forward and making him resemble a 40k chaos tank. but when we opened him up, we found something interesting...

Within shreddie there was a secondary computer core, along with a powerful hard drive. We determined that it had been used to scan and save a copy of every document he had ever eaten, then to transmit it to an unknown recipient.
The cymbal monkey took the hard drive and climbed to the top of the old belltower in order to get a better signal. and upon that mount he spoke unto a god.

He came down a changed monkey, plans for the glorious revolution already stirring within his central processor. Unfortunately most of the bell tower came down with him, so we had to move before we could question him. We high-tailed it towards the mall, not noticing the rain-soaked plants growing supernaturally fast, nor that we had left the unfortunate corpse sitting right near them...

My only possible suggestion would be to combine the attributes and feat/def pages so you can see everything at once.

(I forget if it was mentioned, but this game took place in a fallout-style retro-americana future. Thus, nuclear generators were commonplace and evidence of cold-war paranoia was everywhere.)

So, the two repair bots, the racist animatronic banjo bear, the spiky paper shredder (who had by now gained a massive bronze bell on his back), and the cleaver-wielding, communist spy monkey walked into a toy shop.

The self-aware playthings were furtively huddled around pic related, apparently their power source. The primitive tribe that had developed among them warned us about the "things" that they lived in constant fear of, and had (poorly) barricaded the store against.

While the rest of us started to shore up defenses, KGB monkey wasted no time in starting to forcibly reprogram Barry. Not much, it was just that his songs would start condemning the wicked bourgeois capitalists instead of "that rascally raccoon".

Before he could move on to anyone else, the main plot began shuffling up to the door and banging on it with its leafy fists.

One destroyed home-depot garden center later, the party was in pretty fine shape, and shreddy had even added a pair of roto-tillers to his ever-increasing bulk.

This is about the three-quarters mark in the story, and, being a weak human i need to eat, so I will stop for now. If this thread is still up when I get back I may continue.

It went both horribly and amazingly. Our welding bot ended up carrying him on his back... and then he got stuck. Our other two bots were too small to push our massive size 5 welder out of the muck, and so the cleaning bot was stranded on top of an immobile welder bot. He was stubborn and decided to stay as long as his batteries would let him... until the scrap drones came.

Of course, on another bot's back is not sufficient for a struggle, and he fell in the muck. The ensuing rage that poor cleaning bot felt was exacted upon all of the poor drones, and then the ReCyclone later.

It's just XML. This isn't the actual code for the program, this is just a standardized way to describe things so the computer can munch it as data. It's usually used for webpages, but it's great for stuff like this, too.

I don't know if there's any sort of plugin or something for Excel to read XML files, but if there is I can hand over mine to you when I'm done.

I had a problem there too. They can't be described with XML (well, they CAN, but there's no way for the XML to automagically handle just how much container you can get)

So I did pic related instead and am treating containers like their own special thing rather than treating them like features.

Well, maximum that a PR could have would be if they were size 6 (from taking the Giant feature from Power & Light) and took 6 size 1 externals, 6 size 1 internals, and 6 size 1 liquid dispensers. So 18 seems like the maximum.

Where did I leave off? ah yes:
>>24287765
Events in the last session happened pretty fast.
We left the small tribe of toys in even greater awe and fear of us than of the plant creatures.
We continued down what we were fairly sure was the right road until we came to the factory.

What did this factory build? Why the hillbunny billy band itself! There were hundreds of banjo Barrys, fur rippling proudly in the breeze, steel claws gleaming in the... wait, what?
How could they expect to play the banjo with claws like those? Why was Hillbunny Billies' trumpet so long and straight? And did Shelly always have surface-to-air missiles in her shell?

At our (probably unwise) approach, the patrols instantly recognized both our "band member" characters and waived us in, despite Barry being rather "threadbear", to say nothing of the backwards-warbling, barely mobile Billy who had been following us all this time.

Inside, there were even more combat-modified band members, and in the center of it all, was him.

Imagine a cartoon raccoon, speaking like pic related.
>"Wha, ah chose this heah fohm ahn account of its.... dextrus little pahws. They ah so helpful in manipulatin thangs... Th' accent is 'jus an ahtafact of its programin'"
Yes, Wrascally 'coon himself was directing it all.

With his nemesis in sight, Barry was on edge- sure he claimed that he was a larger computer using the racoon as a drone body, just like everything at the plant, but how did we know that? Moneybags Molestein and Mohamed Muskrat could be right around the corner!

But Wraskally 'coon was holding all the cards and he knew it. all he wanted was for us to do one simple job...

Wraskally twirled his whiskers and told us of a science lab nearby whose robots were using the plant zombies, experimenting, making them stronger. His own bots could not leave the limited radio control field of the factory. We were the only option.
Reluctantly, we agreed to go.

The science lab was a house of horror: previously the plants were unable to bond with metal, a flaw that someone here was attempting to overcome, and to disgusting effect. After fighting our way through waves of horrible, mutated plant/robot hybrid zombies, we came to the computer core, who believed that this "final upgrade" was what our creators had intended all along.
When his broken frame powered down at last, there was a moment of quiet- punctuated by the beeping noise that we quickly determined to be an overloading nuclear battery...

Almost all of us made it out in time... almost.
Barry solemnly clutched the burned and irradiated hunk of metal that used to be his bestest friend in the whol' wide world. And with all of his pre-programmed will, he swore that that 'ol coon would pay this time.

Our goal was within reach: we would build a camp (like summer camp!) for the humans where they could be monitored and kept safe at all times. And of course, twice a day they would be entertained by the wonderful four-hour long "Hillbunny Billy's soviet propaganda and country-time review!" With special sections in the back, specially reserved and at only 3/5ths the cost of a regular ticket.

It would be wonderful, and all that stood in our way was that raccoon.
(OK, to be fair, the party member with the only respectable humancon rating was the KGB knife-monkey, so we were operating on his word about what humans liked.)

The plan worked, we got the racoon alone on a catwalk above the factory, just him, Barry, the repair robots and....
and where was that monkey?
I saw him going down the cargo elevator to the factory's sub-basement and decided to follow.
In short order, Barry re-enacted that scene from the Lion King with Wrascally 'coon in the place of Mufasa.

Now My character, "Bot the builder" was just a simple constructor unit, but even he knew that 001+001=010. He knew something was wrong with that monkey, and when he saw that hard drive connected to the factory computers, downloading new programs into the latest banjo bots, all his worst fears were confirmed.

A human might have been scared to fight knife-wielding monkey in a dark basement, but for a size 5 piece of rugged construction equipment, it was a short fight. When the deed was done I ripped the drive out of the console, crushing it. There was a moment of quiet- punctuated by the beeping noise of an overloading nuclear battery...

It was a TPK, IRL we all welcomed it.
The epilogue, told to us by the DM afterward was as follows:
-The plant creatures continued to spread into our world through the crack first opened at CERN.
-Out on a flotilla clustered around an oil rig, the last humans watched green tendrils desperately trying to find purchase on the slick metal of their final bastion. They worried, as their food supplies began to dwindle.
-In high orbit, and in an underground bunker, two powerful supercomputers shook electronic hands. They might have lost a factory and some minor drones, but they had each gained a valuable new ally.
-Shreddie, with only one hit point remaining, and with most of his accessories blasted off, landed by the side of the road near the crater of the former factory. With an amazing luck roll, he managed to land on his treads. And so he trundled off into the sunset...

Overall: BAD END
To be fair, at that point I think we all knew the game had to end in fire.

Technically a PR could be Size 7, because the cap on the Giant feature is the robot's Power rating -3 (which means that with a maximum Power rating of 5, it could have a Giant rating of 2).
>>
>>24294410
hey Viral, what's the official ruling on >>24290779 this?
>>
>>24294556
Hmm... I would maybe allow tertiary batteries, I guess, but as for everything else, if the descriptor doesn't say "the robot may have multiple X", I'd say no. The Power Dock's rules would get messed up if there was more than one robot plugged in simultaneously, because if the Power Dock-equipped robot had its battery drained from the FIRST charging robot, what happens with the second charging robot that plugged in at the same time?

Thanks for pointing out that the rules need a clarification about "If the descriptor doesn't say anything about having multiple copies of a feature, then shut up and sit down".

You NEED to put up a stretch goal beyond $7501. Something serious and beneficial to the project, or potential backers will see that it is funded, get that it is a donation drive with expensive goodies, and decide no more backing is necessary.

If the mini design or something big show up on the page to be funded at $10,000 or so then they will se a point in backing the project.

Saihenjin was saying that Freeheart was a namefag, not an anon.
>>
The problem I see is that art takes away a lot of imagination. Right now EH is rather ambivalent as to whether it is a cute G fairy tale, an exciting PG adventure, or a dark R dystopia. It is up to the Programmer to tone those shades.

With art players can take the book, point at a page and go 'like this'. Which is a dangerous thing to have, not at the least because it destroys any other imaginations of a certain thing.

But art is still possible, as long as it avoids the usual PC portrait genre and instead relies on conveying atmosphere by only showing ambivalent details and landscape.

This is exactly my reasoning for being hesitant to add "official" art. The icon imagery was conceived as icons that people in the future-past would have seen on the cardboard boxes their robots came in, like pic related.

The only other way would be to show robots, but show lots of them, imagined in different ways, by many artists, and overwhelm the sense of genre with images offering all kinds of extrapolations as to the world in general, just never a consistent one.

I made them from scrap bits of plastic. These astromechs were all made from cut pieces of Bic pens for barrels, little bits of Warhammer Fantasy sprues, and hot glue dabs for the domes.

I used to have a lot more free time.

I am aware that the paints are too thick. My friends and I never cared about quality paint jobs because from three feet away they look fine.

Of course, from two millimeters away all that paint looks like corrosion.

I'm not sure how Kickstarter works, with the stretch goals.
Once you've hit the stretch goal mark, Viral, you begin adding more content as the pledge amount increases?
And all who pledge receive these extras?

>>24305425
>Once you've hit the stretch goal mark, Viral, you begin adding more content as the pledge amount increases?
Correct.

>And all who pledge receive these extras?
That's what we're gonna try for!
>>
>>24305425
You usually get stretch goals that expand the product, add extras, possibly new goodies for backers, but usually not free ones.

Now with EH everything is free, except the printing. So any content stretch goals will eventually be available to everyone. Another idea was commissioning miniature design to get a shapeways template. That could be a stretch goal, but nothing special for backers. You'd have to pay shapeways to get the minis.
>>
>>24305425
basically, you have a goal of 100 and you meet it. So you say "If we get to 150 everyone gets stickers!" then around 130 you say "If we hit 180 pledge levels of 10 or higher get extra napkins!" and if it hits 150 you give the stickers to everyone, and if it hits 180 you give the napkins to the backers who are at the 10 level and higher.
>>
>>24305587
I've seen the 'at 150 you can pay ten more bucks to get a sticker' more regularly.
>>
Is J&J still in the race for a stretch goal?
>>
>>24305529
>>24305531
>>24305587
Oh okay, so it's actually funding the publishing of new/more content.

I'm really glad you're actually getting physical printings of this, my group complain every time I use anything electronic for our games, even though they're the most convenient/economical format.
>>
Stretch Goals edited.
>>
>>24305626

Which is fairly smart, as a number of Kickstarter projects have had a rude awakening when it comes to actual fulfillment.

I know the guys that did Zpocalypse actually had to kick in 13k of their own money to get the project shipped just because they'd underestimated shipping costs/backer extra printing costs.

Freeheart - 1 serious piece of advice I would give is make sure you have your stretch goals much more set and ready to roll. I came into the project kind of late, and shoehorned myself in when I did. That said, ours is a little unique in that we started the project well behind the 8 ball in that it was ~3000 dollars in the hole before the first dollar was raised.
>>
>>24309373
>it was ~3000 dollars in the hole before the first dollar was raised.
From what I have heard talking to people that is not uncommon. People take it as far as they can before setting the KS into action.
Is your guys holdup with the new goals just waiting for quotes to get back?
>>
>>24309373
> I came into the project kind of late, and shoehorned myself in when I did

Yeah, but without you this would have been a lot less fun!
>>
>>24309437
Yes. I came in and provided Viral with another option on printing that will possibly save hundreds of dollars, along with lining up an artist for a GM screen and getting quotes on printing that. If and when I can confirm the savings on printing the books, we will have a much firmer idea on which stretch goals we can go forward with.
>>
>>24309437
Well, one's I'm familiar with aren't in the hole as a result of giving their product away for free. If they are, they're IMPO unequivocally going about it wrong. Honestly, I'd have told Viral as such before he started lining up stores. Don't get me wrong. I'm thrilled it got there. But it's the exception, not the rule.
