Hey kids, it's time for some VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest
Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/TWsBuPup

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You've recently arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact. After a massive victory party that left you with a headsplitting wakeup call, you met with the mysterious and totally trustworthy Colonel Lynch of the Albion Intelligence service. He's agreed to help pay for repairs and maintenance of the u-boat in return for being able analyze it.

You were then given a mission to raid suspected Imperial spy weapon caches. Your raid was successful, but your singleminded obsession to get intel that might tell you of Karla's whereabouts nearly got you killed. You survived with light injuries thanks to your adjutant/best friend/surrogate sister Samantha. However, your recklessness has succeeded in pissing her off, and she has been actively avoiding you ever since you got back from that mission. You managed to make amends with her, and you even managed to recruit a new member in your squad!

The next few days pass rather uneventfully. With the spy ring broken, and no sign of the Imp invasion fleet, things in the harbor have settled into an eerie tension. Sure, things were peaceful now, but how long would it last?

You and the Demons have spent the time drilling and keeping in shape. Sure, there were a lot of grumbles that they weren't in boot camp anymore, but it was necessity to keep them on their toes as well as stave off the boredom. Today, however, you've decided to let Sam be the drill sergeant for today, much to your squad's dismay. She's a much crueler slave master than you could ever be.

With the day free, you...

You decide to check out the nearby supply depot. You heard that in order to try and make up for the Home Guard's current shortfall, Albion has decided to start purchasing surplus Gallian weapons. Already, several ships flying Gallian colors have sailed into port. You also wryly note that in addition to cargo, the ships also occasionally disgorge small mercenary bands like yours, no doubt lured by the prospect of easy money.

The depot is easily within walking distance, and you reach it in no time.

"Morning, sir. How can I help you?" The Home Guard clerk manning the front gate greets you.

"Just checking out your weapons. I requisition them from here, right?"

"That's correct." The clerk nods. "But because you're not officially part of the Albion armed forces, you'll still have to pay a fee for requisition."

"Alright." You nod, taking a look at the list of stored items.

ARMORY UNLOCKED

Weapon variants: In addition to your base weapons, you may purchase variant weapons that focus on ACCURACY, POWER, or SPECIAL AMMO. These are one time purchase only and can be freely swapped out with whatever your squad is equipped with.

Gear: Gear are additional pieces that can give minor augmentations to your troops' abilities. Currently your troops can only take one piece of gear. Gear purchase are also one time only and can be freely swapped.

WEAPON VARIANTS

(Choose one weapon for any class)
POWER - 1000
ACCURACY - 1000
SPECIAL AMMO - 1000

ROSSMORE SHOTGUN - 1000
One of the oldest and most respected weapon designs in Albion, the Rossmore Pump Action Shotgun is a highly reliable, extremely powerful close range weapon. Only Shocktroopers may use this weapon.

GEAR:

BANDOLIER - 500
Allows the wearer to carry an extra grenade or ragnaid.

SMOKE GRENADE - 600
Creates a cloud of smoke that blocks vision. Does no damage.

WEAPON HARNESS - 1500
Allows the wearer to carry a second primary weapon except for lances.

>You do not need to purchase anything right now, but the options are here.

Afterwards, you decide to:

>>
>>24578181
>Smoke Grenade
Fuck yeah smoke grenades! Run our scout with smoke up, block line of sight, and then go nuts with tanks and storm troopers. This needs to happen.
Special Ammo might not be so bad as well, but I never got much use out of them in the games except in the hands of heavy gunners and defensive play.
I'd like to see the shotgun in play, we seem to play close and aggressive and that would do well with that.
>>
>>24578181

Suggesting the shot gun and harness for Jäger and the Stormtroopers.

After that check with Qyburn, or the letters if available.
>>
>>24578181

Hmmm, perhaps a new sniper rifle or lance?
>>
>>24578181
How much dosh we got again?
>>
I should note that you only have 1600 credits in the bank right now.
>>
>>24578286

>>
>>24578181
>letters or the prisoner
We need to get the intel we risked our lives for guys.
>>
>>24578233
True. Then we can carry a shotgun AND a weapon with longer reach.
Hey OP, what would we have to do to be able to carry two sidearms so we can make like Chow Yun Fat?
>>
>>24578181
Note, we have 1600 credits. Not a huge amount especially considering our upkeep.

I think we should purchase a Smoke Grenade, while the Shotgun would be nice I'd rather have more float than that and while the Shotgun would add to our killiness the Smoke Grenade can turn the tides of an entire engagement.

Spend 600 on the Smoke Grenade and leave the rest alone.
>>
>>24578181
I would buy a shotgun for our self and the bandoleer for Sam. Let her carry a rifle in addition to the lance. Would cut down on the niggling feeling that lancers in VC were shamefully under equipped.
>>
>>24578295
Alright, yeah let's pass on getting anything for now then.

>Check in on Qyburn
>>
>>24578316

I agree actually, but for the future shotguns and harnesses shold be first priority. We have not traditionally been anything other than a hard assault unit.
>>
I should stress again that purchases are one time only. Once you buy one, it's assumed you've bought enough to fit your entire squad. That's why the options are so expensive.
>>
>>24578181
I say we buy SMOKE GRENADE and then work on the letters. Anything else would too much money.

Having roughly memorized the route Parker had shown you earlier, you eventually make your way back to Qyburn's workshop. However, you notice that there seems to be much more activity around the area. There are a number of transport trucks lined up outside, and there are quite a few more guards posted on the perimeter. And not Home Guard either, but SOE troops.

The guards recognize you and let you pass, saluting as you go. You return the salute and continue inside the building, where you see Qyburn, Lynch, Jack, and quite a crowd of people crawling all over the Vergeltung.

"Hey! Dr. Qyburn!" You yell, deliberately ignoring Lynch's presence for the moment "I heard you've got some new toys for me?"

Qyburn's face lights up the moment he sees you and waddles over to you. Evidently, whatever he was discussing with Lynch, he finds your conversation topic far more interesting.

"Ah, Captain Sturmfuhrer! So good to see you again!" Qyburn leads you away from Lynch and the gaggle of new faces to a more private section of his workshop.

R&D UNLOCKED

R&D is similar to the armory in that you can purchase new gear and upgrades. However, this kind of stuff is cutting edge, so supply is limited. PROTOTYPE equipment means you only get ONE.

Spiderweave Armor (PROTOTYPE) - 1200
Constructed out artificial fibers several times stronger than steel, this cloth armor provides superior protection to standard Scout armor with no additional weight.

Plastic Explosive - 1000
More powerful than TNT and more stable than weaponized Ragnite, plastic explosive will be the way of the future for precision demolitions!

Composite Armor (Vehicles Only) - 2000
Using revolutionary steel alloys, vehicle armor plate can be significantly strengthened with only a minor increase in weight.

>The underwater running upgrades have already been implemented in the Type-36. Since it was part of the u-boat refurbishment, that's free.

"That's some pretty interesting stuff." You whistle.

"Just remember! If you're out in the field, do try and bring back any enemy equipment and technology you can find! The more intact it is the better my research efforts will be!" Qyburn says.

Nodding, you turn back to see that Lynch and Jack have now been joined by a new face. He seems tall and regal, with a rather grim look on his bearded face.

>Sorry about the delay. Parental lectures are always the worst.

You decide to go greet the new face first. For some reason, he seems to remind you a lot about yourself. He appears to have a noble upbringing, or at least presents himself as having one, with a grim look in his weathered face showing that he had seen quite a lot in his younger days.

"I'm sorry, I don't believe we've met." You say, reaching your hand out to the stranger.

"Captain Davos. Albion Royal Navy. I'll be the helping run your u-boat." The man returns the handshake. "It's an honor working with you, Captain Sturmfuhrer. U-boats aren't easy targets."

"Well, she certainly did put up a fight."

"I see I don't have to introduce you two." Lynch briefly interrupts. "I would love to stay and talk, but I have other engagements. Captain Sturmfuhrer, I've already provided Beta with your next mission details, when you're ready."

With that, Lynch melts away, despite leaving in plain sight.

"Creepy fellow, that Lynch." You frown.

"Aye, but a necessary one." Captain Davos says. "It's bad luck to sail a ship without a name. Have you come up with one yet?"

"Vergeltung. It's Old Gallian for 'vengeance'." You respond.

"Ah, a fitting name, a fitting name indeed!" Captain Davos laughs.

>>
>>24579731
"So I don't want to sound like I'm prying here, but what exactly is your service history? I'd like to know what the guy running my ship is going to be capable of." You say.

"I've been serving since EWI, though to be honest, I wasn't even part of the Albion Navy at first. Started out a smuggler and blockade runner for black marketeers, until I got caught. Was given the choice of the Navy or jail and here I am today."

"What happened to your previous ship?" You ask.

"Sunk by a u-boat." Davos says bitterly. "I lost many good men that day."

You nod. Despite having been handpicked by Lynch, you feel that Davos at least is a kindred spirit.

"So how soon do you think you can get the Vergeltung running?"

Davos sighs. "We're still in the middle of shakedown runs, but if Lynch has his way, we'll be doing our maiden voyage within the week."

"Not enough time, I suppose?"

"Not nearly enough."

You suspect this has something to do with that new mission Lynch had mentioned to you. With your job here done, you decide its time to head back to the hotel. You give your goodbyes to Qyburn, Jack, and Davos.

By the time you return to the hotel, it's well past noon. Your squad is nowhere to be found on the field, which probably means their training is done for the day.

Let's find Elizabeth and pay a visit to those lovely prisoners of ours. Lynch said she was good at interrogations, so lets give her a baptism by fire.

You decide to try and find Elizabeth, since you need to get your mission details. Looking around, see her in the lobby, reading a book thick enough to stop bullets.

"Ah, Captain! I was just looking for you earlier." Elizabeth stands up and hands you a folder. "Lynch's mission details."

As you skim through the documents, you're not surprised that they're surprisingly bare of details. Trust a man like lynch to leave out everything but the bare minimum. Basically, all he's telling you is to get ready for a mission within the week, and train for amphibious combat and boarding actions. Wonderful.

"Is there anything else you need, sir?" Elizabeth asks.

We'll do the interrogating. Those letters are probably in some kind of code, and this way we get to spend some quality time with an imp.

"Actually," You pull out the pile of letters that you had managed to grab from the cove. "I recovered some letters from the Imp spies and tried reading them, but I can't make heads or tails of them."

"Cool. Let me have a look." Elizabeth opens up the letters, putting them side by side and examining them closely. Before grinning. "Heh, it's one of the simplest ciphers in the book."

"Well?" You ask.

"I'm guessing you're not really interested in the wonderful world of cryptology, so I'll give you he basic gist of it. These letters are correspondence between the individual spy cells working in this area. They're talking about 'the Fleet' moving out, and to rendezvous at some place called 'The Crag'." She then hands the letters back to you. "You know... when we were interrogating those prisoners you captured, they mentioned 'The Crag' as well. I'm betting you that's what Lynch is after. From what we can tell, it's one of those small islands far out to the east that sit between us and the Empire's northern shores."

"Okay, so we have an idea of where we're going, then." You nod. "Did the prisoners say anything else?"

"Well, not anything related to the mission." Elizabeth shrugs.

"Come on, Elizabeth, we're all on the same team here. You don't have to hide anything from me." You sigh.

"Well..." Elizabeth frowns. "One of the prisoners did claim to know you, which definitely caught Lynch's attention. Unfortunately, beyond that, I don' t know anything. Lynch performed the interrogation personally at that point. And before you ask, that particular prisoner is uh... not exactly in any condition to answer questions for a while."

So I'm thinking that we should get both Bandolier and Smoke Grenades then, otherwise we'll have to sacrifice Ragnaid to actually use the grenades, which doesn't strike me as a spectacularly bright idea.
>>
>>24582147

Sure, I'll support this.

Could always use it for more Ragnaid if it doesn't work out at the very least. The smoke could be handy for retreats as well.

Still want that Composite Armor though.
>>
>>24582216
We should get the shotguns first, for close and personal action.
>>
>>24582245

Too expensive, I mean we could get both the shotguns and either the grenades or the bandoliers (for the record, I prefer the bandolier if the case so we don't have to sacrifice ragnaid), but that wouldn't leave enough of a buffer enough for my taste should things go wrong.
>>
>>24582216
if smoke grenades aren't more or less the most useful gear you have, you either aren't using it right, or you aren't using enough of it.

I vote we buy the bandolier this time around though and smoke next time since the next mission we have won't see much use for smoke.

I was under the impression those were standard, my mistake if that is not so.

The spooks probably know already anyway, if not at the background check they've no doubt done on us (not likely) then at the interrogation.

>>

...That sentence makes no sense at all.
>>
>>24589929

Thought so, thanks for that.

So yeah, staggered frag and smokes, smokes get thrown so the guys with frags can lose in. Classic assault tactics

As for what we tell our spy, I feel we should be vague. We should not assume anything about what Lynch does or does not know. Best to be cautious.
>>
>>24589939
I don't see why it wouldn't.

>"It's a deal." You say, though you think for a second. "Wait, if you could get that information, wouldn't you already know why I would want it?"
>"Just want to hear it coming from you!" Elizabeth replies just before waving and backing out of the door.

Elizabeth is doing us a favour by getting information. In return from this favour she want's to hear our story personally told by us, even though she could find out herself/already knows.

My point was we should invite Sam along because she deserves to know and will probably be angry if she finds out we told someone else but not her.
>>
>>24590438

Honestly? I don't really care, I always sort of saw our story as a need to know basis, we're doing this because we need information, not because of any particular attachment to Elizabeth. Honestly if Sam really gets that worked up over making a deal that would bring us further to our goals...
>>
>>24590540
>Honestly if Sam really gets that worked up over making a deal that would bring us further to our goals...
Oh I dunno, she seemed pretty pissed over that one time where WE NEARLY DROWNED and Sam had to step in and almost BROKE HER BACK pulling us out of the fire. All because we were trying to get information that would "bring us further to our goals".

You know, those goals she doesn't know much about and is worried will kill us someday? Why is telling Sam the full story such a big deal when we just casually agree to spill it to some spook (who could be lying about knowing it beforehand).
>>
>>24590828
>who could be lying about knowing it beforehand
Why would she? She has no reason to go out of her way to learn our tragic past.
>>
>>24590828

Because the spook has information, simple as that.

Look, I'd be a lot more amendable if this was in the midst of apologising to her for our little stunt, but it isn't, and we didn't choose to tell her then. So I'm going off based on that.
>>
>>24590910
Because a good spy never passes up an opportunity to collect intelligence. Even if they know our personal history they DON'T know how that history has affected us personally. Hearing the story from us will tell them everything they need to know about our psyche and motivations. Information which you just agreed to hand to them on a silver platter. Or did you imagine that she agreed to this because she wants to be friends?

We need to stop being so naive around spies.

>>24591077
I know we already agreed to "JAGER STURMFURHER fears not spooks and their lapdogs!" so I guess frantically grabbing onto every lead is perfectly in character for us. I'm just worried it's going to bite us in the ass sooner rather than eventually.
>>
Just to let you guys know, Sam is not too concerned about the specifics of your past. What she IS concerned about is that you'll tunnel vision and get yourself or somebody else killed for it. She's terribly trusting to a fault so she's not going to try and pry into your personal life.

Elizabeth, on the other hand, is just trading a personal favor for a personal favor. She knows how details can get changed or warped down the intel chain, so she likes getting her info straight from the source.

Anyways, I'm thinking of continuing the thread now so we can at least wrap up Brillant's miniarc. Any interest right now?

You decide to give Brillant a bit of a helping hand. After all, he sort of reminds you of yourself when you first entered boot camp. You vaguely recall from his file that he was from obscure noble house in a remote location. He was essentially a noble in name only, considering his family wasn't really very wealthy or held many lands.

"You need some help there, Brillant?" You ask, walking up to the young man.

"What?" Brillant turns to see you. "Oh, Captain! I didn't see you there. Uh, no, I'm perfectly fine!"

Well, he certainly doesn't LOOK fine. Rather than say anything, you just raise an eyebrow and continue to stare at him until his will breaks, which happens surprisingly fast.

"Okay okay! I'm lost!" Brillant sulks. "I swear this place is designed like a maze!"

"Then what have you been doing so far?"

"Well..." Brillant looks away. "I was just following Tarin around. But I mean, it's not as bad when I'm in actual combat. When the adrenaline is pumping I seem to do just fine. It's just out of combat that I'm like this!"

"That does make some twisted kind of sense." You nod. "Wait, shouldn't have somebody have caught this in boot camp?"

"I was home schooled, sir. Trained by my family's personal guard. My family doesn't live in Gallia so I never had official government schooling."

"Ah." Things started making sense. Since he was most likely the family heir, nobody had would have wanted to be the one to point out he had a critical weakness.

Tarin's very good at what she does, and she also has the benefit of having experience. You think she'd be able to make a good trainer for Brillant, if you can convince her to. Plus it could build up that unit cohesion. Besides, it'd be good to give Tarin something more to do than playing around with her knives all day.

"Brillant." You say, putting a firm hand on his shoulder. "I believe it's time for some SPECIAL TRAINING."

Brillant visibly blanches. Even if he never did go to boot camp, The words "special training" were universally ominous. "W-what kind of training, sir?"

"I'm going to have Tarin teach you the basics of navigation and orienteering! I'll even authorize her to use any means necessary to make sure those lessons stick!" You say happily.

"I really think I can handle it on my own-"

"NONSENSE." You say, your hand gripping his shoulder even tighter. "I expect you to report to the lobby tomorrow morning. If you try to ditch, well, Tarin's a pretty good tracker. I'm sure she can use the practice."

With that, you walk off without a care in the world. You can't wait for what tomorrow has in store.
