You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. After a great deal of work, you have become a Paladin like your Father, and now take up his duties.

You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mari, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighters, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.

Your journey continues...

You have arrived in the ruined city of Coral Gate. A broken city that's slowly being reclaimed by the sea. You arrived, and were surprised to see in the Manor House signs of a fire, and possibly life.

Also, there's lamia here! When fetching a boat for the others, you spotted a small lamia child watching you. She started and ran off when you looked at her. However, you were able to tell where she ran off too. The old ruined Cathedral.

You set that as something to check out later, and investigated the Manor House. You found that it was indeed inhabited, and after some unusual conversation with a very strange mer doorwoman, you were taken inside to the banquet hall. There, mer women were being waited upon by eunuchs, and a white bearded old man, wearing the mantle of a Paladin, introduced himself as Lord King Trevor Sallar, and welcomed you to his court.

Oh boy, this guy's going to be all kinds of unpleasant crazy I bet, still, I suppose we should be polite until we know for sure.
>>
>>24683871

Oh wow, this is a lot earlier than usual.

I suppose we could politely pose a question to Sallar about the current state of Coral Gate. He appears to be friendly enough, but he might not be completely aware of the state of his kingdom. Either that or he just gave up on maintaining the topside of Coral Gate.

You all amke your way to the table. 'King' Trevor motions for you to sit. Fish, shellfish, and other aquatic based food are placed in front of you. "Please, help yourself." King Trevor says. "We have plenty, and it's been so long since I've had proper guests. Let alone a Paladin...though a very unusual Paladin." He says. "So tell me, is your appearance the result of a spell misfire, or a Conclave lab accident, or a curse?" He asks. "Must be a trial, but we Paladins are not ones to let small things hold us down."
>>
>>24684147

Sit down, attempt to spot this elusive "pineapple" that the mer-woman hybrid from earlier mentioned.

Reply:

"My appearance is as it has always been; I was born like this. I'm a Lamia."

"I was born this way, I've always been a Lamia."
>>

You poke at the food, but keep an eye out for anything that looks fruit-like that might be this pineapple thing that was mentioned. You see oranges, starfruit, and other recognizable things, and some stuff you've never seen before, like something that resembles a bulbous cactus, but nothing that says 'pineapple' to you.

"My appearance is as it has always been; I was born like this. I'm a Lamia."

Trevor blinks and looks at you. "Huh?" He slurps down the eel that he was in the middle of eating. "How's that again? You're a lamia? BUt you're talking, using utensils, and a Paladin. That can't be." He frowns at the others. "Did the accident scramble her memory?"

The other Dawnchasers either roll their eyes or look away. They know better than to dig into THIS hole.

"You were raised by Liam?" Trevor nods. "Ah, that explains a lot." He shakes his head and then looks at Tricia. "And with that hair, you have to be Alexander's kid."

"Yes." She nods.

"What's your talent ? Horses, like your father?" He asks.

"Insects." Tricia says.

"A wasp witch?" His eyebrows go up. "And he's let you out into the world?" He nods and sighs. "Figures. Your fathers were...unconventional." He snorts. "Good men for the Caligo Clarus." He sighs. "So, I suppose that my army of Occuli isn't waiting on the bluff. Is it?" He sneers and digs into his fish. "The Salt Queens will be disappointed." He gestures to the female Mer that are around the room. "They had hopes of back-up and support."

"Lord Trevor, could you explain to me what has transpired here in Coral Gate? I am familiar with some of its history prior to the bombardment by the Leviathan, but I was not aware that Coral Gate was still inhabited and being governed by an official."

>Other stuff

Doesn't it seem off that this paladin guy is claiming to be king? It seems that the other paladins we've met who are OK people were content to hold office and help run a town, but never to directly rule a place. It might not be unheard of if this guy was ancient, but he can't be more than 40-60 years older than Ssen if he knew her father and Tricia's father.
>>
>>24684752
"No, no army. Heck, this place has been considered abandoned or ruined for the longest of time, I'm happily surprised to find people here.

I did want to warn any inhabitants of the region about these bounties though- this place might come under attack due to them soon enough."

>>
FUCK YES LAMIA QUEST. If I knew it was going to start early, I would have shown up early! Oh well, I still friggin' love this shit.

Yeah. I agree. To add we need to take little bit more caution when dealing with this guy.
>>
>>24684908

You're not the only one.
>>
>>24684865
I agree that he's suspicious but he might still be ancient. Our father's party could have stopped by here just like we're doing now.
>>
"Lord Trevor, could you explain to me what has transpired here in Coral Gate? I am familiar with some of its history prior to the bombardment by the Leviathan, but I was not aware that Coral Gate was still inhabited and being governed by an official."

Trevor smiles. "Citadel is evil. I hope you know that." He says. "A force of corruption. The Fey Court, extremist though they may be, has it right. It crushes individuality, and the Newgates are the worst of the worst. They live a live of hedonism and preach it across that endless, ever growing swath of a city." He shakes his head. "They get upset when it rains, can you believe that?" He snorts. "So, I declared that Coral Gate was no longer a part of Citadel. We would be our own people, people who believed in morality and independent thought. We were doing well, we had secured the city, forced out any opposition or loyalist traitors. And then the Leviathan responded...but even after the night of fire, I survived." He nods. "I would not allow Coral Gate to go unmoored. I rallied the survivors, and later, when the Mer came. I accepted my position as King for them. They need to be ruled. They crave strong authority."

"What happened to the human survivors?" Mage asks.

Trevor shrugs. "They couldn't handle the difficulties of freedom, or were ungrateful to the Mer's help. So they left." He says. "They aren't important anymore, they were weak."
>>
"Well, that may have been, but we did have a purpose coming here." You say. "I wanted to warn any inhabitants of the region about these bounties though- this place might come under attack due to them soon enough."

You hand Trevor the bounty notice. He scowls. "Thank you for this warning. This was sent by Citadel forces, wasn't it? Capturing, or making pets out of monsters...you see what Citadel does? There's nothing that they won't pervert." He nods. "Thank His Light that you have been shown the truth, and came here. The time has come to strike back, and Coral Gate will be the place where it all began.

"Finally, after many years, we shall finish what we started. The Salt Kings and Queens have built their numbers." He nods. "We are about to do what Paladins are meant to do, and cleanse the land of that which would destroy it." He says.

"You're leading an army?" Lea says.

"Of course not." Trevor says. "Look at me, I'm old and tired. My sword arm is weak, and I'm surrounded by the most beautiful queens of the ocean, and..." He points to his crotch. "Not even a quiver. Age is cruel." He bitterly curses. "And the mer need leadership, they're too random to work without it." He nods. "Thankfully, we've been blessed with a proper leader. It's a shame you arrived today, he left just last night with the host."
>>
>>24685052
Ah crap, I have a bad feeling about this.

"Who might this leader be?"
>>
>>24685052

>>
>>24685104
"Trevor, I need to know. Who is leading the Mer army and what are they attacking?"

"That's King Trevor, Lamia." He says.

"Where were they heading? You should know that Stone Hall and Bronze Peak are no longer under Citadel's direct control."

"They still bow to it." He sneers. "And I know that they're being led by this Prince Itzak Newgate." He nods. "I've heard that they've been doing things that have made Citadel upset. The Mer hear many things from the little fishing villages up and down the coast." He nods.

"What are they attacking?!" Peri/Mari ask. "Please, we...we want to help."

"Well, it's simple tactics." King Trevor snorts. "We can't work out of here if the Leviathan is still active. Hopefully, we'll seize it for our own, but if it's too much trouble, then we'll make sure it doesn't pose a threat to anyone, ever again."

You close your eyes as you ask the next question. You really have a bad feeling about this. "King Trevor," you say. "Who, exactly, is leading the Mer army? Did they have a name?"

"Didn't give one, I understand that he's ashamed of it." He nods. "I did have him remove that shiny obsidian mask he wears, handsome enough fellow." He shrugs. "Anyway, hates Citadel with a passion, and could command the mer with ease." Trevor nods. "Good man, I'll be sure to reward him when we've broken Citadel's will to fight.

"Now, what I need you all to do is to be my eyes and ears." He says. "I know the intricacies of spying may be a little much for some of your minds to understand, but your people will help you." He winks at Lea.

"Okay." Mage says. "I've had enough, and obviously we need to go, yesterday. Who's for ditching this asshole?"

"What?!" Trevor sputters. "I am a Paladin and a King!" He looks at you. "Tell your mage that he should know his place and manners!"
>>
>>24685317
"The man leading your mer is a former lightbringer! He's a tool of Citadel!

>>
>>24685317

Can we light this place up to see the effects? [beacon, not offensively]
>>
>>24685317
"I'm sorry Trevor, our mage may be impolite but his point is entirely true. You've been played by the citadel- they've been attempting, several times now, to produce a strong military threat to rally citadel together. I've stopped two instances of this so far, and I need to stop this one too. Citadel will fall on its own- if attacked, however, it will rally."

"We must be off. I do apologize for the sudden exit."

"Brother, I understand that haste is important at this point but we need a few more pieces of information before we depart."
*turns back to Trevor*
"King Trevor. I am afraid that man that is leading your people is an unwilling puppet of Citadel. Now I need to know EXACTLY the route they are taking so that we may stop this before it gets any more out of hand."
>>

>>
>>24685382
That's because he's batshit crazy.

>>24685317

"Why do you think Citadel has been putting up a bounty for live monsters? They wanted an army, and you just handed it to them!"
>>
>>24685402
I'm more worried about what happens when ADAHN sics mermen on us.
>>
>>24685317
"Sorry Trevor, we're in a rush I'm afraid. Got paladin stuff to do, you know how it is. Or not, perhaps. It's all good. I'm sure we'll meet again in the future! "
>>
>>24685317
"No.

"He is fully right. You handed your army over to agent of your hated enemy. And for your information a Paladin does not wear the mantle of King. They do not take the burden of leadership.

"Lets go and quickly."
>>
>>24685317
I helped put Prince Itzak Newgate in charge of those two cities because he isn't being controlled by Citadel, he's one of our most powerful and influential allies.
Neither city has declared independence because it would spark off a civil war that would kill thousands.
The man you gave control of your armor to is under the direct control of the Dramate, he couldn't carry out his task at the lightbringer so they're using him for another role. If the Leviathan is attacked a lot of innocent people are going to be caught in the crossfire.!
>>
>>24685317
"So the bad news is that you just gave your Mer army to an agent of Citadel, the latest fake villain in the latest Lightbringer story, who is no doubt going to use it to slaughter all those who are turning against Citadel. The good news... well, I'll get back to you on that one."
>>
Do not apologize for what Mage has said. He's right in this. This 'king' is not fit to be either King or Paladin.
>>
>>24685421
"Itzak is a Fool, but he's a good natured fool, far better a leader than the rest of his kin"

might be a point to make, although I really don't like how this sounds... if someone could revise this line..
>>
>>24685449
I'd be fine with leaving the insult if he called the guy "crazy" or "mad" or "detached" or "ignorant" or "stupid"

"asshole" however, might not be accurate. The guy seems accommodating enough. It's a matter of accuracy, not principle.
>>
>>24685449
I'm still all for lighting the place up after checking if his medallion is burning red
>>
>>24685469
Please do reread the way he's been talking to us and tell me he's not an asshole.
>>
>>24685471
That would get us no where, sadly. And wouldn't help the Mer here.
>>
Okay, so there's a bunch of statements that have wildly different tones. So I'm going to take a vote: This is actually a pretty clear Paragon/Renegade pick.

Paragon: Diplomatic to Trevor, have Mage calm down, try to explain the scenario for Trevor, and maybe sweet-talk some intel.

Renegade: Not-So-Diplomatic to Trevor, support Mage, and try to force some info out of him.
>>
>>24685387

This, but call mage brother, because fuck this racist dude.(but on the sly, because we are a Paladin)
>>
>>24685508
We did promise we'd try being little snake over little dragon, so Pick the paragon option.
>>
>>24685508
If this was a true paragon/renegade option, we would punch out Trevor right now.

Still, I suppose considering that we did promise Lea we were going to try and act more paladin-like, we should probably go paragon.
>>
>>24685495
It's pretty clear he things us subhuman in intelligence. Most likely because every lamia he's ever seen has been all HISSRAR.

If I thought EVERYONE who was like that was an asshole, why, I'd never get done insulting them.
>>
>>24685508
leaning to paragon, we did promise Lea after all.
>>
>>24685508
Paragon dude. We're a diplo-paladin. Or at least trying to be.
>>
Know what we should check after this?

We should check with lil' lamia and make sure her parents didn't go off to war.

Or, if they did, make sure they get BACK from war.
>>
>>24685508
I'm for supporting Mage. We don't need to force info out this guy. He's already given us the info we need to know and where we need to act too.
>>
>>24685508

We are a paladin. Gotta paragon it up
>>
>>24685566
>>24685552
we're paragon this time, sure. I'm all for that.

But next time someone has a hostage and is being all "ACCEDE TO MY DEMANDS OR THEY ALL GET IT"?

Our precedent has been firefly-esque renegade for those situations.
>>
>>24685508
Gotta go with Paragon, because right now he's the one the Mers respect and a Paladin (a damned albeit heretical one) besides which.
>>
>>24685508
I don't think we should apologize for what mage said, he don't control what our party thinks or feels

I rather play Paragon if the choice to not storm out to collect our thoughts and do something isn't an option

After this is over we should totally talk it over for the party though
>>
>>24685595
>a damned heretical one
Oh come on, we're pretty heretical too.

I mean, we almost openly admit that a large number of the light's teachings were mis-interpereted or outright fabricated during the citadel's stay.

Like that vampires-must-be-killed thing we dealt with.
>>
>>24685599
>we don't control what our party thinks or feels

This people. Mage has his right to state what he thinks or feels. Who are we to apologize for it?
>>
if we can support mage while going paragon, that would be preferable.
>>
>>24685615
And how many Paladins declare themselves 'King?'
>>
>>24685617
yes. This.

We're paragon, we'll explain it to the guy. But mage raises a salient point- this guy done fucked up. Big. Not the sinned-and-are-doomed-forever kind of fuckup, no.

The accidentally-handed-an-army-to-my-enemy kind. You don't pay for that in the afterlife. You pay for that in the here and now.
>>
Oh shit, I just realised something about this.

Going Paragon means losing the respect of the Mer. Remember what he said, they value strength. If we slap Trevor's shit, we may be able to convince the Mer to our way of thinking.
>>
>>24685629
Honestly, I'm fearing -we- might, if anything happens to Isen. It's why I'm going to such crazy lengths to keep him and continuity of rule consistent.

We must ensure a suitable king is available so it doesn't fall on us to manage all this bullshit.
>>
If a renegade would punch him out and go on without him...

Could a paragon slap him and explain the situation?
>>
No full on insulting the guy, but I don't think we should force Mage to apologise either, or apologise for him. This guy is an asshole.
>>
>>24685660
No. We're not. Ever.

Either Isen is setup as King or we help setup a republic but we will /never/ take up the role of 'Leadership.' Paladins do not lead countries.
>>
>>24685653
What use is that? You want to steal his Salt Queen harem?
>>
>>24685697
Agreed, honestly a monarchy seems to easy for land spirits to subvert, a republic or something similar which doesn't have a singular power figure would most likely be a good thing to establish in the long run.

>>24685710
I want the Mer to help us take the army away from Adahn, they're more likely to listen to us if they know we have convinced others of their race.
>>
>>24685653

"Apologies, sire." You say. Mage looks at you in surprise. You turn to him and give him a fixed smile. "My brother can sometimes be a little impolite and blunt...but what he said is absolutely true.

"You've been played by the Citadel- they've been attempting, several times now, to produce a strong military threat to rally citadel together. I've stopped two instances of this so far, and I need to stop this one too.

"Also, just as an aside, Prince Itzak is many things, foremost a fool...but his soul is his own, and he's a far better leader than most." You say. "I helped put Prince Itzak Newgate in charge of those two cities because he isn't being controlled by Citadel, he's one of our most powerful and influential allies.

"Neither city has declared independence because it would spark off a civil war that would kill thousands.

"Now I need to know EXACTLY the route they are taking so that we may stop this before it gets any more out of hand."

Trevor looks at you confused. "Under the control of the who? What are you talking about?" He shakes his head. "What nonsense are you talking about Citadel's power and puppets? Citadel's power is its sprawl, it's overwhelming culture of depravi-" He stops. "Never mind, you're related to the Mer, correct? I will not try and figure out this nonsense."

I'm fine with that, no reason to burn our bridges completely, but I'm not going to insult Mage just to sooth Trevor's ego.
>>
>>24685839
"Please." Peri says. "We need to know what route they're taking, the Leviathan has countermeasures, they might be going straight into a trap."

Trevor rolls his eyes. "Ellis!" He barks. One of the mer serving girls comes up. "Get these people a map of the currents, show them the red-warm. They're taking that one." He gets up from his table. "I've lost my appetite. Poor company."

"One last thing," You say as Trevor leaves the hall. "A Paladin does not wear the mantle of King. They do not take the burden of leadership."

"No Paladin has, or should sit a throne." Lea says, citing the Teachings.

Trevor just leaves without comment.

"Sorry." Mage says.

"And what are you apologizing for, brother? Saying it before I could?"

Mage smiles.

"Just..save such observations for a better moment, next time."

He nods. "I get it, I get it."

One of the eunuchs brings you a map and shows you the water currents. Mari takes over.

"Okay...so...they have to swim/march at a normal speed...they left yesterday...going by the flow...and..." She bangs on the table. "Shit. They'll be there in a day and a half."

"And it's three days by Lightmare." Lea says.

"I can try to Haste him." Mage says.

"You said yourself that it was a stupid idea worse than a Dawnchaser plan." Tricia says.

"At this point, I think it's been upgraded to Dawnchaser plan." Mage says.

"Can we send a message?" Peri asks.

"With what?" Mari asks. "No ravens here, magic?"

Mage shakes his head.

"Shit."

"Well...eh..." Mari tilts her head back and forth. "Okay, I see a Dawnchaser plan...maybe." She points at the map. "This is a set of currents and inner shoal rapids, if we take a boat through that, we should be able to beat them by half a day."

"And the downside?" Tricia says.

"Rapids, coral reefs, shoals, rocks, and a lot of things that can kill us." She says.

"Of course." Tricia says.

"Those boats that still float aren't build for that kind of steering." Lea says. "I can tell that much."

"What if we had someone in the water?" Mage says. "Would that help?"

"Subtle." Mari says. "Eh, Ssen could help us through, but we'd still be in a lot of danger, one lamia isn't THAT much support."

"Any ideas, Ssen?" Tricia asks.

Mage or Peri/Meri might be best to bring along while Tricia and Lea scrounge up a boat.
>>
>>24686302
I was thinking peri/meri is probably the most athletic bar lea, and lea can't really... swim.
>>
Even if it would be a little bad standing with the old one

should we try to talk and ally or at least placate the leviathans around here?

I'm not sure if lea would appreciate that either, but...
>>

"We're going to need the sturdiest damn boat we can get our hands on..before we get on that though, I want to get a look at that Cathedral."

"Why?" Peri asked.

"Well ... you guys might this is bad idea and potentially a waste of time. I won't lie either that I have other motives to do this too.

"What if there were more then one Lamia... we apparently have a family living nearby. Where there's one Lamia, there might be more. If we can enlisted their help. We might be able to do this. But... we might just end up burning time we don't have."

The others shrug.

"We go in, look, if we can talk to them, great, if we have too much trouble. We split." Tricia says. "We all get why this is important."

Lea nods. "You want to make sure they'll be safe." She smiles at you.

You all get out of the 'Salt Court' and back into the gondola, you back in the water. The plan is to get to the remaining boats and have Tricia and Peri/Mari find a useable boat, Mage and Lea will go with you to the Cathedral. You're making your way to the docks, when Mari groans.

"Oh no." She says. "I just had a very bad idea."

"What?" Lea asks.

"Well, the bounties are greater for brood females, right?" Mari says.

"Yeah..." Mage says.

"The Salt Queens are all here...and all of the people who can fight have left." Mari says. "Perfect opportunity."

Tricia moans. "Why'd you have to think of that Mari?!"
>>
>>24686403
"SSSsssonofua...

Okay, good thought Mari. Can we actually do anything about it? We could stay here, but we'd be letting the battle and however many deaths go on."

Should we take off our armor for such deep swimming? It might also get in the way of heart-wards needles.
>>
>>24686403
Maybe we can convince Trevor to move them to Stone Hall? The only ogher alternative I can think of is splitting the party.

"By the Light, why can't things be simple."

Sigh. "Then again I guess it wouldn't be as fulfilling at end, now would it?"
>>
>>24686531
well, we could GAAAAMBLE and all go to the leviathan, then all come back to guard.

Well the hunters aren't aquatic... so unless they bring a spell to breath and swim like a Mer if we can move them further seaward they should be safe enough.

Naming it the Salt Court with such a Salty Leader is really silly.

We COULD ask Tricia leave a bug around here if want to at least be notified if theres an attack if we really wanna get +Lamia/Leviathan Party

Yeah. We should have them retreat underwater- the passions have relatively small powers, with a specific magic ability. Like vampire control.

The thing is we don't really have a lot of options.

Its either split up.

Let the Mer folk get attacked

Let the Army march and start a new Lightbringer Saga.

"SSSsssonofua...it's just too perfect of an opportunity, isn't it?

Okay, good thought Mari. Can we actually do anything about it? We could stay here, but we'd be letting the battle and however many deaths go on...or we find a way to relocate them without us having to escort them.

"By the Light, why can't things be simple?" You groan.

"Well," Tricia says as she and Peri/Mari get off the boat. "We'll try to think of something while we find the boat. You check on the lamias, and if hunters really are coming..." She doesn't want to say anything about the scene back in Ruin Woods...but it's clear that its on her mind.

You get into the boat now, as Mage punts you along to the cathedral.

"There a reason we can't bring them with us?" Mage asks. "Kill two birds with one stone?"

"Risky." Lea says. "Also, no way that Trevor is going to give up his little fiefdom." She mutters. "They're loyal to him."

"Yeah, but Mer are weird...hey don't give me that look. They are!" He says. "Maybe we find a way to convince them to follow us...I dunno." He shrugs.

The boat stops at an open gap in the Cathedral walls. The best thing you have for an entrance.

"So...how are we handling this?" Mage asks. "Quietly, or just walk inside like we're asking to borrow some sugar?"
>>
honestly splitting up isn't as a terrible idea as it sounds. Stopping the army is most likely going to be either a one on one battle or Diplomacy HO! We really only need Ssen with those sugar sticks.

The Passions attacking the Mer with a load of blanks will be a problem though.

>>

The other two nod. You hand Lea the anti-venom. And you show her how to use it and to put it into your heart IMMEDIATELY if you get bit.

Thankfully. It seems that the Lamia's nest is above the waterline, as is the entrance to the Cathedral. You walk up a flight of salt encrusted stairs to an upper floor, Clang in hand. The windows here are still intact. Nothing fancy, just the usual Nine-Pointed Star on a Blue Background.

<Hello?> You say as you enter the room.

Well, you see the nest...a huge pile of sheets, moss, seaweed, blankets, and other soft items. It looks quite warm and inviting...if a little damp and green from algae.

The nest rustles, and a different lamia girl comes out. She's older than the little one you saw earlier. In fact, here she comes, right behind the older one.

The older one's about 10-12 feet long. She has hair that might have been a light brown once, but years of swimming and living here has made it a thorough algae green. They have scales that are a dark blue in color, near black, and their bellies are a pale blue.

They look at you for a while. Then the little one moves forward a little. The older one pulls her back.

This is...awkward.

<You know, you two are the first living Lamiae I've seen since my parents. I'm really sorry for the intrusion. Have either of you been attacked recently?> You say, creeping a little closer. You hold out the meat.

The little one sees it, and looks at the older one. The older one slides closer to you, and takes the meat. Then she comes back to her...sister? Has to be, far too young to be daughter. They share the food.

<No. No attack. We stayed here. Got fish with mama, then mama didn't wake up. We did what she said to do, put her in water. Now...all of this is ours. Mer come, talk talk talk, try to make us go see old human, we just say go away.> The older one says.

<More?> The little one asks. <Like!>

Lea takes out some dried salt pork. You hold it out, and the little one comes up, and pretty much devours it. She looks at you for a bit. <Sing! Please!>

<Ssssh!> The older one comes forward and grabs the little one and pulls her back. <That is not mama.> She says the the little one.

"I said you were good at singing."

"Oh...shall I?" She clears her throat...she sings a few verses to a little lullaby that you know. You always thought the lyrics were a little creepy, but it's such a nice tune.

Here's my gameplan.

We have the mermaid ladies hide underwater where the passions probably can't get at them until we return their men guards.

We ourselves go with a teammate or two to diplomacize the army.

We send Lea and another teammate or two along land routes on the nightmare with the children to granny.

I call this operation "we better split up, gang"
>>
Oh! You guys remember how the dramatae ORDERED the passions to avoid the caligo clarus?

We could make it blatantly obvious we're here. Even if we're not.

Caligos and warning signs! EVERYWHERE!
>>
>>24688372
I really hate splitting up the party.

>>24688394
That might be an idea. Though I doubt it will work but worth a try.
>>
>>24688394
Heh. This place is under our protection!
Works perfectly until the actual dramatae show up looking for us and slaughter everyone here in a fit of rage.
>>
Hopefully we can convince the Mers to turn the army around by telling them about the bounty and how their women are in danger. And then we just find a way to deal with Adahn and the Leviathan ourselves.
>>
>>24688446
But that's not a fun story.

That's not fun at all!
>>
>>24688219
>bubbleheads
Guys, what if the Dramatae can put bubbles on peoples' heads to allow them to be active underwater?

(Also, totally adding an idea for our inventor friends to get on. Some kind of...self-contained apparatus that allows people to breathe underwater.)
>>
>>24688513
its a very different prospect fighting underwater then on land. For one thing you are fighting in 3d. For another everything is slowed down. Mer would have a huge advantage.
>>
So, do we have a decision?

Echo is sort of waiting on us.
>>
I think the best plan is to do a Split the Party. Two of us with the Lamia children on the way to Stone Hall and Adavan's army. Lea and Ssen I think. They are our best talkers. Mage and Mari\Peri stay behind and make it very clear they are there. Peri is to use all here knowledge as a Freedom Fighter and Mage his magic to setup traps after traps if they decide to attack anyway.
>>
>>24688670
uh... the path to the army is on a boat in the water. we'd have to drop them off after braving DANGEROUS CORALS, but before talking to the army. I suggest bringing tricia, and having her be dropped off with the kids to lead them to granny while we go to talk to the army. Lea can come if she wants to get over her fear of water.
>>
>>24688670
How many can Lightmare carry? Why don't we sencd Mari/Peri with the girls on lightmare back to Granny?

>>24688722
Bleh my brain is out on a break. That sounds like a good idea. Take them partly by boat then drop them off with Tricia.
>>
God. I don't understand why people think it's good idea to split the party. Those ideas never work out right. At least in a group we have chance at doing something at stopping any bs that might happen.

I'm against sending anyone alone to do any job. Or leaving anyone behind alone.
>>
>>24688826
Unfortunately we have 3 things we need to do at the same time... and all are time sensitive.
>>
>>24688826

>>
>>24688823

>>
>>24688840

>>24688858

I'm thinking the safes option is just stuffing all the mer into the cathedral, assuming they can fight, and have them watch over the kids while simultaneously making themselves harder to find and have a huge advantage in a fight what with being underwater and all.
>>
Send someone with them to stone hall with the lightmare.
Rest of us go onna boat.
>>
>>24688994
I wouldn't trust the old fool with the children and you know he'll be down there with the Mer. He'll most likely do something foolish like hand them over to save his ass.
>>
Not sure if this has been considered, but Ssen going with the Lamia might be mandatory. She may be the only one who can speak with them in the group.
>>
>>24689087
well, until we drop them off at stone hall.
>>
>>24689087
I think Mage can. If I recall Ted and he had spoke in lizard or whatever its being called.
>>
>>24689110
Or at least understands it.
>>
>>24689110
Might need Ted for the boat journey, when we tie beefed up dolphins to the boat.

We should send one of the others with them, after mage fucks with their ears.
>>
>>24689198
Not Ted, Mage.
>>
>>24689198
Teds not with us...

Anyways.

Only plan I'm likely is taking the children with us, moving the Mer/old fool down into the Cathedral, talking Mr.'Whatever' or the Mer Army out of attacking the boat., drop off the kids with Granny, and talking to the Captain of the boat to making it a non-threat to Stone Hall. Too damn much work to do.
>>
>>24689250

Typing would be nice sometime, brain.
>>
Okay, just to help you all. Peri/Mari and Tricia have gotten a small sailing ship. A cutter. It's big enough for all of you, and MAYBE the lamia girls.
>>
Side bonus to taking them on the boat:

We have the lamia reinforcements we were looking for. They're naturals in the water, and will make the trip much safer.
>>
>>24689279
And if we stay off the boat/hang on to the side of it? Enough room then?
>>
>>24689279
Oh good. I still want to leave some people behind with the Mer though.
>>
>>24689279
well that's nice, but what do we SAY to the chilluns?
>>
>>24689279
Good sounds like a plan.

>>24689291
Ehh, Trevor and his Mer court are PRETTY Citadel as it is. Honestly I think the farce they've become is actually a direct product of Citadel. So they'll be fine. I mean, consider the fact that the mer army was already handed over to Adahn.
>>
"It depends. How far are you willing to go to get to a safe spot?"
>>
>>24689291
The problem is if we leave people we don't have enough to do either job properly.
>>
>>24689298
"We're going sailing to Granny's place!"
>>
>>24689331

Like Ssen, but bigger. Not longer. Bigger.
>>
>>24689347
Strong:Stronk as Ssen:Scheherezade
>>
>>24689279
Okay, so bring the kids if we can persuade them and try to get the mer down into the cathedral for hiding+underwater fighting in worst case scenario.

How to convince them...
"There is a place where you can probably get shelter, if you wish, and I will do my best to ensure your safety. But there are no completely safe spaces in this land, currently - at least, that I know of. The place I speak of should be a lot safer than this one, however, and though I myself will be too busy to watch over you constantly, there is one who should provide you protection at the very least."
>>
>>24689387

Also, the Dawnchasers have healing potions and a dedicated healer to patch up injuries.
>>
>>24689387
"Judging by the dragonflies at the window dooing loop-de-loops," Lea says. "I think Tricia and Peri have a boat ready."

You nod and turn to the girls. <There is a place where you can probably get shelter, if you wish, and I will do my best to ensure your safety. But there are no completely safe spaces in this land, currently - at least, that I know of. The place I speak of should be a lot safer than this one, however, and though I myself will be too busy to watch over you constantly, there is one who should provide you protection at the very least.>

<Huh?> The little one says.

<New place, with new people. Nice people...right?> The older one asks. <Mer and Old Man are nasty.>
>>
>>24689498
<Yes, nice people like my Granny. She makes the bad people go away.>
>>
>>24689498
<Old snake, I call her Grandma, she is a naga but loves me all the same.>
>>
>>24689498

<A person who I know is nice. Like me, but *bigger*. She has respect and leadership of many lizard people, who speak like you and I do.>

Should we also mention the situation with the lizard people and the humans? That's a huge part of Stone Hall right now, and leaving that out would be pretty dishonest.
>>
>>24689498
<Yes, new place with new people. I can't say everyone will be nice there but I know those that you would be staying with to be very nice.>

<I don't think Mer are nasty at least not all but Old Man is. Foolish one at that.>
>>
>>24689498
<Yes, better I'd say. There are friends of mine there, and they'd be friendly to you too. The worst part will be the getting there, which will be a bit dangerous for my friends. They can't swim as well as us. You could stay here, if you choose, but I'd worry them coming for you every night."
>>
>>24689498
<Always some nasty people, but nice people as well.>
>>
>>24689532
<Yes, nice people like my Granny. She is a naga but loves me all the same.>

<Okay.> The older one says. She takes the little one into her arms and motions for you to go ahead.

"Do they have names?" Lea asks.

You shrug. <What are your names?>

<Name?>

Lea and Mage both look at each other, surprised.

"What?" You asked.

"What did she just say?" Mage asks.

"She asked what a name was, the word 'name'." You say.

Lea and Mage both chuckle as they get into the gondola. The girls are swimming with you. "Your father must have asked the same question, and you gave the same answer." Lea says. "Because we just heard that one say 'Ssen,' clear as day."
>>
>>24689643

"Really? Oh by the Light. My name is Name. I don't even...I swear Dad is rolling in his grave with laughter right now." You sigh. "Never tell Isen."

<Did your mother call you anything special when she wanted to talk to you?> You ask.

<First born, loved. Second born, loved.> The older one says.

You look at the other two. "What did they just say?"

"Ssai, and Ssah." Lea says. "Is that their names?"

You shrug. "Close enough." You say. You have a thought...you had three other sisters, they had been kissed to sleep...but still.

<What's Fourth Born, Loved?> You ask.

"Ssad." Ssai says.

No...that's not it. That's not...what you remember...wait...your mothers were Citadel corrupt.

<What's...that's Fourth Born, Monster?> You ask.

"Ssuad." They say.

There it is...you remember that word...it's an ugly name too. You push it away.

"What was that about?" Lea asks as you head towards the boat.

"Nothing." You say. "But please, keep the name thing quiet."

Lea smiles. "I promise...and Mage isn't one to complain about dull names."

"Explains a lot about our history with them." He says.

You arrive, the ship...well...it floats and it has a sail. You're happy for that. The fact that everything else about it is either ugly, slimy, smells like rotting fish, or is a combination of the three is something that you think you'll be able to live with.

"They're ADORABLE!" Tricia says when she sees the pair. "Hello!" She waves at the little one. "Tricia." She points to herself.

Ssah smiles and waves at her.

"Okay," Peri/Mari say. "Nice to have new company...do we have a plan?"
>>
Do we?

I'm for leaving Mage and Mari\Peri behind to help the Mer announce they have the Caligo Clarus with them and then hole and trap the hell out of the Cathedral.

Then the rest can head to Adavan's Army and Stone Hall.
>>
>>24690095
"Well, we try to get the ladies to take themselves underwater while we're gone, and we get ourselves up the shore with our boat. We'll drop someone off with the kids to take them to granny, and continue on to talk the army down.

Now, a question I pose to you all: Do you think the nightmare could stand sitting in a boat? Or will we have to send someone for it later?
>>
>>24690194
er, put a " at the end

that whole thing was dialogue. I was asking my friends about the nightmare.
>>
>>24690095
"Try to talk the into Mer to hiding in the Cathedral before we leave. Maybe help set some traps for them.

"After that head off after the army."

>>
>>24690095
I think the plan is to either bring Ssai and Ssah with us and have them hide in the boat if anything gets dangerous, or to send Peri with them to Granny.

Convince merladies to take it underwater

Put up some caligo-sign with peri's advice as quickly as possible to keep any agents away

Ride the hell to stone hall on a boat

drop the kids off at some point before we go on to face the army

face the army, send them back to guard their womenfolk

Anyone know what we do about the nightmare in this scenario? Do the fishmen have a stable we could use?

"Well, the girls come with us. Then we dump them on Granny when we get to Stone Hall." You say. "And as for a plan? Well, I suppose if you call setting out towards the fastest possible route, braving the dangers of the sea on our way, as a plan, then yes."

"So, nothing new for us." Mage says.

"I'm actually worried about Lightmare." You say. "No way she could fit in the boat, could she?"

Mari shakes her head.

"Magic to shrink her?"

Mage shakes his head.

"Shit." You say as you shake your head.

"Anything we doing about the mer?" Mari asks.

"Maybe we could move them to the Cathedral. Have them hide out underwater, as well as booby trap the place. So that we can come back after this and get them to someplace safer."

"Tre-paron me 'King' Trevor isn't going to just let is do that...I think." Tricia says. "I don't like the idea of leaving him in charge."

Oy guys, what kind of approach are we taking with trevor? We really don't have any time to waste on this shit.
>>
you guys know what I just realized?

the new lightbringer... is on that boat. Just waiting for it to be massacred and start his adventure.

It's a new take on an old classic!
>>
>>24691191
If we want an infodump approach, here's a summary that I wrote up:

The Dramatae are Citadel's servants. They keep it alive by offering it human sacrifices and keep it amused by empowering Lightbringers to carry out the Lightbringer story every so often. Lightbringers defeat the Shaper of Darkness, sacrifice themselves to prevent some calamity secretly engineered by the Dramatae from befalling the land (said calamity may only APPEAR to exist due to Dramatae meddling), Citadel gets fat off of Lightbringer self-sacrifice. The Dawnchasers (us) disrupted their most recent Lightbringer story attempt, and Citadel's magics are failing as a result.

The Dramatae are desperate now, and are attempting to create an army of Mer/monsters/abhumans to unleash upon the world to create a Lightbringer story setting. The leader of this army was the former Lightbringer of their story, whose name is/was "Adahn". He is planned to become the new Shaper of Darkness, and cause some tragic event to create a new set of Lightbringers to carry out the story. We think that the Leviathan and Stone Hall are involved in this, and that the Mer army that was sent out with Adahn is going to be used to attack one or the other. The new Lightbringer will surely rise out of this, and the Dramatae will proceed with their plans to renew Citadel.

In addition, Coral Gate is now exposed due to most of its able-bodied defenders being sent out with Adahn. Given the bounty for mer/trolls/lamia/naga that was posted, it is *very* possible that the Dramatae have a reserve force ready to swoop down on this town and either raze it and/or capture any Mer for their monster army. It may be in your best interests to retreat to an area that is nearly impossible for non-Mer to reach, and fortify it and trap it as much as possible.
>>
>>24691225
Which boat? The Leviathan?
Like a low ranking crewman that survives and fights his way off the ship while watching his Captain perish in the battle? Then wanting to avenge his fellows and/or mentor?
That boat?
>>
>>24691443
I think that's the boat he's talking about.
>>
>>24691443
yes. THAT boat.
>>
>>24691443
instead of FFVII its FFIX
>>
>>24691372
That sounds fair enough, if we can get him to LISTEN.

He might dismiss it as leviathan nonsense though, and to be honest, it kind of does sound like that.
>>
>>24691372
It's a good summary, but it doesn't actually explain what Citadel is. That's kind of key for this sort of info-dump, especially when Leviathan descendants are known to be a little out there. Hell, even if we explain it he still might think it's all metaphor.
>>
>>24691443
Probably less 'low ranking crewman' and more 'well meaning orphan stowaway, who gets discovered and is put to work mopping the ship for the rest of the trip'.
>>
>>24691501
>>24691516

Okay: Citadel is a godlike entity of the land. It was created by the Dramatae to act as a power source for their magics, and to ensure that the land and its people would stagnate in comfort and ignorance forever. Every so often, Citadel needs to be recharged by human sacrifices, but it also needs to be amused or it gets as destructive as a petulant and angry child with godlike power would. Thus, the Lightbringers were created to amuse Citadel and feed it at the same time.

Evidence: crops grow without much effort from farmers, Lightbringer tale follows same formula every time, lack of clocks to make people not notice how time passes, etc. He already knows Citadel is evil and corruptive, but just not *how* it is so.
>>
>>24691562

You need larger sturdier boats to transport horses. Otherwise there's a good chance he could kick through the hull or cause the ship to sink due to excess weight. In our case we can simply spread out our weight if needed or go into the water.

A horse can swim but it's not something you really want to have happen.

>>24691777
Maybe we could use this -- give him what we claim to be a sugar stick, and then when it turns out to be salt, he gags, and we wrap him.
>>
>>24692126
I still want to try to save Adahn.
>>
we GOT sugar sticks when we left bronze peak. I am pretty sure.

We'll just bring some.
>>
>>24692126

Or sugar mixed with paralytic poison. We'll call it: Licorice!
>>
>>24692144
Sometimes wrapping someone in 600 lbs of Lamia Muscle is for their own good.
>>
>>24692174
If it comes to that, yes. But only to hold them still and get them listening.
>>
>>24692161
What if we take some of these 'sugar crystals' and make Salt Water Taffy with Black?

Wait, wasn't it a barley stick? I don't think it was sugar.

Barley "sugar".
>>

>>24692294
Meta wise it's basically just pocky right?

In the sense that they're both anime protagonists, yeah, roughly. But it's a real thing, and different:

we will engage plan Hugsssss if all else fails.

"That's entirely true, Tricia, it is a bit paranoid. However, the Dramatae are pretty good at cooking up backup plans. Not necessarily good ones, mind you, but backup plans nonetheless.

"So, prepare for the worst, hope for the best. Right? If nothing happens then all the better. But if something does... I would have at least liked to help in someway.

I'll tell Trevor we're leaving and give our recommendations.

"On that note I better high tail over there then."

<I'll be right back you two. These people are my friends and family. They'll keep you safe until I get back. Okay?>

The two girls nod.

You swim over to the Manor House, aka the Salt Court. The door to the feast hall is closed again. You knock on it.

That same semi-bonkers mer girl opens it. "Oh...uhh...I'm sorry Paladin New Neighbor." She says. "I'm not supposed to let you in. The King says that you're..." She lowers her voice to a whisper. "Dangerously crazy." She gives you an apologetic frown. "And you can't come in. Thank you for coming though! I've been very excited that I get to open the big door so much." She beams.

"Oh, but you wouldn't be letting me in, you'd be letting me leave! You see, we're about to leave, but it wouldn't be polite for us to do so without saying so. So if we don't see him, we can't leave, and surely if we're dangerously crazy he'll want us to leave, right?"

Leviathan Logic!

"Oh, well then." She opens the door. "Come in, so you can come out. Thank you for helping me with my job." She beams. "Honestly, it so nice to find someone who understands how the fish fly and birds swim in their own oceans." She sighs and whispers. "I think the Salt Queens are getting a little old, they're unable to draw perfect whales like I do...then they criticize my art." She huffs. "Anyway, follow me Miss Paladin New Neighbor."

"Please, call me Ssen. And speaking of which, what is your name?" You ask.

"A Mistake From Too Much Absinthe." She says. "I prefer to be called Abby, that's spelled D-A-N-A. Okay?"

"Perfect! It suits you Dana."

"Thank you." She nods. "Oooh, this is one of my latest drawings." She points to a big green blob of paint on the wall. "It's a perfect drawing of my mother, actually." She points. "See, she's right behind the huge cloud of algae." She beams. "I'm particularly proud of her stern but kind expression that speaks volumes about the burden of motherhood contradicting it with the deep personal joy that it brings a person...and also how she could hurl a javelin right into a human's heart with pinpoint accuracy!" She grin and sighs. "I miss her a lot. She got eaten...it happens." She leads you to a room that might have been a library once, now it's a war room. Maps of cities, a map with little model soldiers on it, and lots of scattered notes about troop formations and possible catapult placement.

Trevor's in the middle, drawing arrows on his map he's talking to himself. "Alright, now it'll be difficult to send the Leviathan through the upper ice passage, best to send ice breakers ahead. But in the meantime I'll..." He looks up as you and Dana enter the room. "What are you doing here? I thought I told you to keep her out!"

"Oh, but she needed to come in so she can come out, because she's here to say goodbye and she can't leave unti-"

"Yes, yes, yes...fine, enough prattling." He rolls his eyes. "What do you want, lamia?"
>>
>>24693104
Simply to warn you that the hunters who wish to collect that bounty might see all your fighters being gone as a prime opportunity. I recommend relocating. And traps. Maybe some poison. I would hate to come back with your army and see you all dead or captured!

And if asks where to relocate to simply tell him the Cathedral.

"No one knows we're here." He waves his hands. "Also, the Manor is perfectly safe." He says. "The Salt Queens are fine fighters too, a few poachers do not worry us. Where would we be moving anyway?"

"The Cathedral." You say.

"That place is a deathtrap. It's covered in salt crystals, and two lamia live there." He says. "I won't have royalty dwell with animals who sleep in piles of mildewed rags." He sniffs.
>>
>>24693325
Maybe a tad. Just omit the last sentence.
>>
>>24693420
"Fine, if the cathedral isn't good enough, choose your own deathtrap. Though, the lamia girls aren't there any more. They're coming with us."
>>
>>24693420
Adahn found you... if he knew so must others.

A deathtrap sounds perfect! Just make sure its not YOUR death trap... also I'm taking the other Lamia with me so you don't need to worry about them.
>>
>>24693429
Too late now.
>>24693420
He did NOT just insult our race.
>>
>>24693420
"Two groups have found you within days. People know where you are.

"And they are not animals, Paladin Trevor. Those two lamias that lived there will be leaving with me today so feel free to do what you will with the Cathedral."
>>
>>24693463
Whatever. We have more grace than that. Let's just leave. The Mer chose to follow him and he chose to damn them all. Can't save anyone from themselves.
>>
>>24693420
"Very well. If.. No, When I return here, If I find you to have sold out the Mer for your own sake? Well, you won't just be answering to The Light. I bid you good day sir."
>>
>>24693325

"Lord Trevor, even if you don't like what I had to say earlier, the fact remains that most of your defenders have left this place, and that there are powerful people looking to capture Mer for their armies. These are not simple poachers or trappers that are searching; these are servants of Citadel who are brimming with all the power that it can muster."

"It is readily apparent that you care about your subjects and their well-being. For their sake, please take the necessary steps to ensure their safety from a large-scale attack."

Then gesture around the ruined manor and the various blasted buildings.

"I don't think I need to elaborate on what Citadel is capable of doing to those it deems a threat."
>>
>>24693420
"That is reassuring. The other Lamia are leaving with us so the Cathedral is vacant."

Let the insult to our race slide. Being the Paladin Serpant instead of the Little Dragon means learning to let our pride take the back seat.
>>
>>24693550
Maybe take a "should you change your mind." to the end of that last sentence.

Trevor just turns his back on you. You nod to Dana and the two of you leave.

"I know another girl whose art was criticized! You know, if you saw me out all the way to where I'm going I could introduce you!" You say.

Dana pauses. "Well...I have a duty to open and close the door for the Queens." She says. She opens the door to the Feast Hall. Then she walks through the threshold and closes the door. With her and you on the outside. She smiles. "There. I have done my duty."

She blinks and looks at you. "You sure you need an escort to make sure you leave all that way?" She rubs her arms. "I haven't...really...gone that far." She says. "Also, I can be extraordinarily cross with people, and have very harsh arguments with them...often with my stick." She points to the coral handled mace at her side. "It is a very poor argument sometimes...I just refuse to allow the other side to make any form of rhetoric at all." She frowns. "Also...people make too much sense out there." She says. "I could get confused and make mistakes."

That is Wizards own madness. If you have a consistent THing that is called a Lamia for 3 editions and then change is like that, im pretty certain that you can still call half snakes lamias.

Also we recognized that, Tricia is a 4E lamia now.

"I don't mind having company. It's really more about whether or not you'd like to relocate, though. I just got here, but I don't like this place. It seems off.

Besides, more people in the water means a smoother ride for those of us who can't swim so well. Just make sure you use only verbal arguments with me and my friends- the stick can wait for the most unreasonable of people."
