VALKYRIAN MERCS is back, baby!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles

Today we're going to continue where we left off last thread and wrap up voting for new squaddies! Once that's done we'll continue with the rest of the side chapter!

Next post will be the list of entries that were put up last thread. Just to let you know, tanker choice will most likely either be Warren Stewart or Benjamin Pinkley since there was huge consensus between both of those choices. However, the second slot is still up for grabs.

If no consensus can be reached I'll just stick in a pregenned character as a compromise.
>>
>>24852382
NAME: Erinyes
GENDER: Female
CLASS: Lancer
PERSONALITY: Soldier
BRIEF BACKGROUND: Erinyes is a Gallian born Darcsen who's family was killed during EW1. Growing up she swore vengeance on the empire and dedicated her life to killing as many of them as possible.

NAME: Berry Sunshine
GENDER: Female
CLASS: Engineer
PERSONALITY: Soldier
BRIEF BACKGROUND: There are people that can kill, and then there are people like Berry. Capable of disarming a bomb and using the same wires to patch a wounded comrade, she was always sent in ahead of main forces to prepare the way. While she is a capable shot, she relied on others to help her complete the missions, many of which helped save the lives of countless soldiers.

NAME: Warren Stewart
GENDER: Male
CLASS: Tanker (to run the TD)
PERSONALITY: Mercenary
BACKGROUND: A tanker from the highlands of northern Albion, Warren's love of things that go boom know no bounds. He became a mercenary for the thrills, the explosions, and the money, and has yet to be disappointed by any of the above.

NAME: Jonathan
GENDER: Male
CLASS: Lancer
PERSONALITY: Brutal, To the point, Speaks with mostly Yes/no/ or not answering at all. Hates talking about his past, Is all in it for the cash.
BRIEF BACKGROUND: Has fought for as long as he can remember. Father was a mercenary so he learned the trade from him during his travels. Doesn't have any tragic back story. Instead just branching off after his dad retired.
>>
>>24852407
NAME: Benjamin "Headcase" Pinkley
GENDER: Male
CLASS: Tanker
PERSONALITY: Headcase is generally laid back and positive, never letting anything get him down for long. The one thing he can't stand is negativity.
BRIEF BACKGROUND: Headcase grew up in Emmeria. While serving in the Emmerian military's Armor Branch, he received numerous reprimands for unauthorized modification of, and misuse of, government property. When his hitch was up, he decided that rather than re-enlist and deal with yet more negativity from the brass, he could come to Europa and make money doing exactly what he was doing before. Riding around in tanks and playing music from a speaker very loudly.

NAME: Jonathan Johansen
GENDER: Male
CLASS: Lancer
PERSONALITY: Knight
BRIEF BACKGROUND: A large imposing man, carrying his heavy lance around with ease. Albionese noble, who lost his estate and his father to Imperial naval bombardment and is now out for vengeance.

NAME: Daisy Henderson
GENDER: Female
CLASS: Engineer
PERSONALITY: Daisy was born and raised on a farm, so shes generally no nonsense and hard working when she needs to be, but she lets loose around friends and family.
BRIEF BACKGROUND: Born in Southern Emmeria, Daisy was raised as the son her father never had. It was from him she learned her rifle skills and how to fix the farms tractor, both of which came in handy after the farm was repossessed after he caught sick and died. Looking for new scenery and pay she set off to Europa.

NAME: Gareth "Gaz" Thatcher
GENDER: Male
CLASS: Tanker
PERSONALITY: Neurotic and cynical.
BACKGROUND: Gareth was considered to be barely worth the effort when he was conscripted into the Albion military. By an administrative error he was transferred to the 53rd armored division where he distinguished himself as a talented tanker. While not exceptional in anyway, he has a feel for all the small things that matter, and they all add up in the end.
>>
>>24852419
NAME: Nanoha Takamachi
GENDER: Female
CLASS: Lancer
PERSONALITY: Knight
BRIEF BACKGROUND: Hailing from the Far East, Nanoha was born into a family of Samurai, though her path into the warrior arts was stymied by her gender. Bored and frustrated, she instead turned to the life of a mercenary in search of fame and fortune.

NAME: Kellam Lockliar
GENDER: Male
CLASS: Engineer
PERSONALITY: Tall but laconic soul, he's the type that doesn't say much more then is needed, save for when he is making a strong case for a certain action he believes in. He lacks a certain presence though, being almost 'normal' in every sense of the word, meaning he can seemingly blend into the background with little trouble.
BRIEF BACKGROUND: Kellam, born in northern Gallia, spent most a lot of his earlier years tinkering around with anything he can get his hands on, slowly working his way up to bigger things till he was working on military vehicles and supplies.

Due to his nature, it was often forgotten he even worked at the base, even though it was him almost everyday in and out that kept everything in line. There was even a rumor while he was there some ghost that was restocking the reserves or seemingly making scrapes and dents disappear from vehicles every night (it was all Kellam though). It wasn't long after the rumors came up that he was fired for 'not pulling his weight', as his commanding officer had put it.

Deciding it wasn't worth arguing with the officer again, he sought out new employment elsewhere.
>>
>>24852430
NAME: Ymir Trueman
GENDER: Male
CLASS:Lancer
PERSONALITY:Knight
BRIEF BACKGROUND: Ymir's father was a survivor of a Belkan House annihilated during the Empire's conquest of the country. Taking refuge in Galia, he grew to adulthood and married a minor noble's daughter. Ymir was born, and was raised in a Belkan fashion, taught to value honor and bravery. Though he tried to enlist in the Galian/Empire war, he was deemed to young to be allowed into the Regulars, and his father refused to send him to the Militia, who were treated oft as little more then fodder.
Ymir continued to train diligently, opting to take the lance as his preferred weapon, with the image of the knights of old. He modifies his lances, affixing a blade along its side to allow it to better serve in melee.

The young would be knight is soft spoken but vocal, with a very diligent and caring personality.
He is very shy around women.

NAME: Fritz Kaufmann
GENDER: Male
CLASS: Storm Trooper
PERSONALITY: Soldier
Down to earth and easy going doesn't give off the impression of a noble but can act the part if need be. Loves keeping up with international politics and is very knowledgeable on the subject.
BRIEF BACKGROUND: Born into a low ranking noble house he served briefly in the imperial army before killing his Commanding officer in a dispute over the cruel treatment of Gallian civilians in an occupied village during EW2. Is currently wanted for treason and desertion and is being hunted by his family who feel the need to execute him themselves.
>>
>>24852445
NAME: Silvia Castalani
GENDER: Female
CLASS: Engineer
PERSONALITY: Soldier
BRIEF BACKGROUND: An Ustian daughter of a greengrocer, Silvia went into engineering to escape the small town she was born in. After an Empire-sponsored insurgent movement bombed her university, killing her comrades and teachers, Silvia joined the Alliance army corps, clearing mines and building fortifications on the central front. The experiences there has left her resentful of nobles and with a firm belief that chivalry is a foolish notion that is best discarded on the battlefield. Silvia has somewhat of a "sixth sense" when it comes to detecting mines.

NAME: Kirk Sampson
GENDER: Male
CLASS: Engineer
PERSONALITY: Valiant, but polite. But has a forgettable presence, enemies often consider him a lesser threat until it's too late. Even his allies tend to forget he exists, much to his annoyance!
BACKGROUND: Raised as a lumberjack in eastern Cascadia (that's across the ocean eh?) Kirk volunteered for the Expeditionary Corps and has served across Albion and much of the Federation. Discharged after his unit was considered too understrength to continue fighting, Kirk turned to mercenary work rather than return home or join the navy. Has an impenetrably dense Cascadian accent and tries to compensate by gesturing a lot while speaking.

Have at it!

I sorta have to admit that Brillant got kind of the short end of the creativity stick. The sad truth of having multiple NPCs is that some are inevitably going to be overshadowed by others.

Isolde Reinhardt
>>GENDER
Female
>>CLASS
Lancer
>>PERSONALITY
Stoic and devoted to her knightly code of honour, Isolde nevertheless is deeply loyal to her comrades. She is also extremely embittered over her current situation, especially against the noble responsible for her charges of treason.
>>BRIEF BACKGROUND
Born into a long line of famed Belkan knights, Isolde had aspired to knighthood since her childhood, influenced as she was by the tales of her famous forebears. However, her status as a female led to prejudice against her aspiration. The Knightly Orders, as an institution were predominantly male, and many females still had trouble being accepted into the chosen brotherhood. Fortunately for Isolde, during her struggles to be recognised as a knight, war was declared.

She was eventually assigned to the assault of Yuktobania, where the growth of her fame was meteoric, especially after the Battle of Korvso, where her regiment repelled an entire Federation Division, albeit at the cost of horrendous casualties. It was even rumored that she would soon challenge the current holder of the title of Grandmaster of the Orders, the First Imperial Princess Karla, which would have led to the unprecedented situation of two females challenging one another for the title.

Her promising career was abruptly cut short when she slew the son of a prominent Imperial noble in a duel over a serious disagreement on prisoner treatment. The erstwhile noble's father, a confidant of the Emperor himself, and enraged over his son's death had her charged with treason, forcing her to flee to the Federation. Bitter and set on revenge, she took up arms against the nation she would've once given her life to serve.

Name: Brother Jirard

Gender: Male

Class:Tanker

Personality: Believes in righteous judgement and retribution. Imperials deserve both. Strong moral compass.

Background: Jirard was a simple village priest until his town was attacked by an Imperial force hunting down partisans. They were destroyed in a climactic tank battle with Gallian armor units. Jirard found and repaired one of the damaged tanks, and replaced it's turret with a pulpit. He then proceeded to roll across the battlefield of the war, spreading the word of morality and righteousness. His skills were noted upon, so he sells his ability as a Tanker in order to finance the construction of a new church and the repair of his home town.

Hope its not too late for this!

>A certain resourceful line cook.

You are Heloise, a lowly cafeteria worker scraping by in one of the many Darcsen factory towns. You've never really complained, though, as you've always preferred the smell of fresh and cooked food over burning ragnite and industrial oil.

Well, at least your enthusiasm has earned you a spot as the head chef, which is pretty damn good for a Darcsen with culinary aspirations, considering "higher class" establishments avoided hiring any, even for basic kitchen work.

It's almost lunch hour, meaning the kitchen is a flurry of activity, chefs and assistants darting back and forth making sure they can get everything out before the final bell rings. As head chef, it's your job to make sure everything goes smoothly and there's nothing wrong with the food.

Unfortunately, you DO find something wrong. Taking a scoop out of a pan of meatloaf, you notice it hasn't been cooked thoroughly.

"Hey!" You shout, trying to get the kitchen's attention. Seeing that you only got some of the cooks to listen, you take the pan and bang it on the table with a loud CLANG, instantly drawing everybody's attention. "HEY! Who's one meatloaf station today?!"

You then pop a caramel in your mouth, savoring the brief sugar rush it gives you. You're going to need it. Normally you're pretty damn nice and easygoing, but when it comes to bad food, something in you just snaps.

"WHICH ONE OF YOU CHUCKLEFUCKS IS IT!?! I got today's roster right here! Don't make go through the trouble of reading through it!"

"U-uh it was me." One of the newer cooks, Matt, raises his hand.

"People eat this!" You yell. "You can freaking kill somebody! Put it back in the oven and make sure it's done RIGHT!"

"Y-yes chef!" Matt picks up the pan and scurries back to the ovens.

You shake your head. Nobody seemed to appreciate good food any more. The rest of the lunch hour goes off with relatively few hitches. However, that all changed when a different bell rang.

Your stomach suddenly grows cold. It's the General Emergency alarm. That means there's some kind of industrial accident... or worse. Everybody does what they're trained to and quickly file out to the front gates. Your worst fears are confirmed when you see several Gallian Militia standing at the gates.

"Attention, everybody!" One of the militiamen announces over the loudspeaker. "Imperial forces have crossed the border and are attacking Gallia! By royal decree you are to evacuate this city immediately!"

"Hey, what are supposed to do? Walk out of here?" You ask.

"We have more than enough trucks to get everyone out of here." The militiaman reassures you. "But we have to leave NOW. The Imperials will be here at any time, and as we all know, they don't treat Darcsens kindly."

Nobody else needs any prompting. They all start quickly rushing for the trucks waiting outside. However, others make a dash back to the factory, most likely to try and pick up and take back whatever they can. You're half tempted to run back to the kitchen as well to try ans grab as much food for the trip as possible.

"Heloise! Heloise!" You hear somebody shouting behind you.

You recognize the voice as one of your assistant chefs, Coleen.

"Coleen? What's wrong?"

"I can't find Jenn and Tiff!" Coleen wails. "They're not here!"

"What?!"

You figure the scrap yard is where the kids will be, because since when did kids ever go straight home after school? Unfortunately, that makes you job harder because the scrap yard has tons of hiding places. Also, it's hard to hear any bells from the factory out here, so it's likely they have no idea about the imminent danger they're in.

"Coleen, you know all their regular hiding spots, right?" You ask.

"Yeah. I've always got to drag them back home after my shift." Coleen nods.

Coleen leads you to a field of derelict tanks. Relics of EWI that were thrown out after the end of that war halted wartime production. None of these shells here had even had the dignity of seeing combat, and were doomed to rust here forever. You have to admit, this would definitely be the place for a kid to hide out.

"Jen! Tiff! Are you here?!" Coleen cries out.

You scan the tops of the tanks and see some movement at one of the more intact tanks. Running up, you give the turret a good pounding. "Hey, who's in there?!"

"I got my homemade caramels right here," you coo in your sweetest sounding voice. "And Imma gonna eat them all if you don't come out right now! Oh yeah, and it's password. I know how you kids think."

"Okay okay!" You see Jen open the hatch, pouting.

"Hey, where the heck is Tiff?" You ask, looking inside the tank.

"Well, we can't be having an AMAZING TANK DUEL if we're both riding the same tank, right?"

"Okay, which one is she in?" You ask.

Jen holds her hand out expectantly. You sigh and drop a caramel in her hand, which she promptly crams into her mouth.

"Sheeeeesh ovher thrrree." Jen points to a another tank sitting atop a small hill.

Dashing over to the other tank, it's the same situation. You have to bribe Tiff with candy in order to convince her to come out. Damn kids, stealing your precious caramels.

You give Coleen a second to both hug and then berate her kids for making her worry so much. She doesn't really tell them why they're in such a hurry to leave, though you doubt they'd really understand the full implications.

"Okay Coleen, we have to GO." You warn. You've already wasted too much time.

Suddenly, you hear a distant rumbling. Curious, you scale one of the larger tank hulls to get a better look and and a cold fist grips your heart. You see Imperial tanks approaching.

"Shit."

You decide to hide out in the scrapyard. There are more and better hiding places than anywhere in the factory.

"Jen, Tiff, you got a hideout here, right?" You ask. "Some really nasty people are coming and we need to hide from them."

"Nuh uh." Tiff shakes her head.

"That's a secret." Jen says.

You sigh and hand them another caramel each.

"Over hwere." Jen points to a carefully hidden door in the scrap. All of you pile inside as the rumbling gets louder.

"Heloise, what are we going to do?" Coleen cries. "The others probably left without us by now!"

"Get it together, Coleen." You hiss. "Let me think for a second."

"Whoa, are we really being invaded by the Imps?" Jen asks.

"Are we?" Tiff adds in.

"Yes, yes we are." You say solemnly.

The twins take one look at each other.

"COOOOOOOOOOOOL!"

Goddamn kids.

"Quiet!" You point upwards. "We don't want them to hear us! Think of as hide and seek."

The twins nod and keep quiet.

"Coleen, did the delivery truck ever stop in today?" You ask.

"Ummmm, yes, I think it did." Coleen nods. "They were still unloading when the alarm went off."

"Then it might still be there."

"B-but how are going to get there? The Imps are probably crawling all over the factory now."

"Coleen. We're Darcsens. We can make a weapon out of ANYTHING."

Your mind racing, your eyes dart around the hideout to to see if there's anything you can use.

"Jen, Tiff, is that a potato gun?" You point to a long length of pipe.

Both girls nod.

"Well, today's your lucky day, because I'm going to show you how supercharge these things so much they can kill a man."

After sever quick minute of manic cobbling, you manage to assemble quite the improvised arsenal.

You have:
2 supercharged potato guns with 3 ammo types: potato, tin can, or baking powder.
2 ragnite oil flamethrowers.
6 pipe bombs
1 crossbow
3 molotov cocktails

"Heloise." Coleen gapes at the arsenal. "Sometimes, you really, REALLY scare me. How do you even come up with this stuff?"

"Just gotta know how to put the proper household materials together in the proper proportions." You grin.

"Auntie Heloise, you're friggin AWESOME!" The twins gush.

"Don't call me Auntie, it makes me feel old..." You cry.

>How do you want to divy this stuff up?
>>
>>24857170
Okay, the flamethrowers go to us and Coleen.

The kids are probably good at throwing stuff so they get a molotov cocktail each and either 1 or two pipe bombs each.

One of the kids gets a potato gun so they can snipe a bit from a vantage climbing point that an adult can't get to. We'll take the other, Coleen gets the crossbow.

The other pipe bombs and cocktails are distributed between us and Coleen.

>>24857250
No, the pipe bombs won't fit in the launchers.
>>
>>24857292

>>
>>24857326

>>
>>24857170
You divy up the weapons. You and Coleen both get the flamethrowers and the pipe bombs and molotov cocktails, since there's no way you can trust the kids with those. You pick up a potato gun while Coleen takes the crossbow. Meanwhile, the Twins share a potato gun between themselves.

"So there's two ways to get to the delivery dock." Coleen says. Since she handles offloading, she would know how to get there. "We can try going through the scrapyard and circle around the factory complex. There's lots of cover and places to hide, but I'm sure they've got their tanks moving through here as well. We can cut through the factory through the kitchens. No tanks in there but who knows what we'll run into inside."

"We'll cut through the factory." You decide. "More cover and we won't have to deal with their tanks."

"Alright." Coleen nods."Jen, Tiff, lets go!"

Lugging your improvised arsenal, your group quickly but carefully dashes back to the factory complex. You don't see anybody around, though assume the Imps have already entered the factory and are in the process of searching it.

"Jen, Tiff, you'll take point." You whisper. "Keep your baking powder rounds loaded. You see a guy, tag him and we'll take care of the rest."

"You can't seriously want my children to-"

"Coleen." You cut her off. "I don't like it either, but the kids are smaller and harder to spot. They can ambush the Imps easier than we can."

Coleen is about to respond, but bites her lip inside. "A-alright."

Taking a deep breath, you enter the factory.

You fire your potato gun almost instinctively. There's a muffled WHUMP as the compressed air propels the bag of powder directly into the Imp's face, sending him reeling back and coughing as the powder gets into his mouth and eyes. To her credit, Coleen's shot manages so strike the Imp in the throat, killing him near instantly. Fortunately, she and the Twins are already in the kitchen and haven't seen the grisly result of her work. You grab the downed soldier's rifle and continue on.

"What happened?" Coleen asks. "Is he-"

"He's no longer a problem." You say. "Where are the twins?"

"Scouting the back door."

"Bad news, big sis Heloise!" Jen whispers as she returns from her scouting mission. "The truck's there, but there's also three more of those mean guys with guns."

You carefully light the molotov cocktails, handing one to Coleen and taking two for yourself. You then carefully peek out the back door and that there are indeed a trio of Imps sitting on the loading dock, digging food packages out of the unloaded crates and helping themselves. You inner cook is a bit incensed that your food is being eaten by pricks like these. You motion for the twins to fire.

Rushing out, you toss your trio of molotov cocktails at the group of Imps. They don't even stand a chance.

Coleen grabs the twins and turns them away from the raging inferno, holding both her girls close. You look on grimly, stuffing a handful of caramels into you mouth to calm your nerves. Being burned to death was a pretty horribly way to go, and wasn't very quiet, either.

The truck starts without a hitch, and it pulls out of the factory parking lot and onto the main road. It seems like you're home free until you hear the rumbling of more engines. You see two cars full of Imperial soldiers speed up the road behind you.

"Coleen, step on it! They're onto us!" You yell as you bang on the back of the cabin to get her attention.

The truck's engines roar as Coleen hits the gas, but the truck is old and heavy. Those cars are going to catch up sooner or later.

How precisely can we time the pipe bombs? We might want to wait on those though until something bigger comes after us or they get closer if we can't do it precisely until we can accurately throw it through the windshield instead of trying to blow it up under their wheels.

We're out of molotovs, but we do have potato guns. We can fuck up their vision by shooting them with the baking powder rounds, and fuck it up even more by shooting the flamethrowers behind us, it might not do much actual damage but it's hard to drive when you're looking right into a ball of fire and your windshield is coated in white.

The pipe bombs aren't very precise, since they're detonated by fuse you managed to salvage. However, you warn the Twins not to hold onto them for too long or real bad stuff is gonna happen.

The pipe bomb timing is a bit crude, and the driver manages to catch sight of them being dropped out the back of the truck and veers to avoid them. However, they do their job in breaking the Imps' momentum causing them to lose speed, which gives you window you need to pop one of their tires with a well placed rifle shot. You're rather impressed, considering what a piece of junk Imperial rifles are.

At this point, you're far enough away from the factory that the Imps have all but given up trying to chase you. Coleen stops making defensive maneuvers and straightens out. You slump down in the bed of the truck, suddenly feeling very tired.

"Hey! Hey Sis!" The Twins hover over you like unwanted pests. "That was an awesome shot!"

"It kinda was, huh?" You say. You guess that mandatory boot camp course really did teach you some valuable skills after all.

You reach into your pocket for more caramels, only to find you've got two more. You see the twins also eying the candy hungrily like greedy ktttens.

"Ah, what the hell." You surrender and let them take the last caramels. You then make a very loud and long yawn. "Just... wake me up when we get there..."

>And that's it for tonight! Since I'm watching Star Trek on friday night, next thread will be Saturday, 6-7pm PST! We'll be arriving in Ustio, and meeting the new squaddies! Don't miss it!
