Predator Quest: Episode 16

You are Three-Claw, a Yautja hunter of the Cloud Viper clan. You have been tasked by your clan Matriarch to embark on a hunt on the world of Fey'lenn, or Pandora, as it is known to humans.

You check your wrist computer, and note the time.

You bid the archivist farewell.

You leave the archives and head for the palace, to answer your matriarch's summons.

The matriarch's aide greets you and asks you to wait while she consults the Matriarch. You find several hunters from various clans loitering within the entrance hall. You spot Ashen-Blade among them. He is chatting up another hunter.

Do you:

A. Approach and greet Ashen-Blade.
B. Move around and socialize with the other hunters.
C. Take a seat and wait a while.

You approach the elite hunter and greet him.

He turns to you. "Three-Claw, greetings. Good to see you, as always. I see there are quite a number of us here. We're all pledged to the mission, I suppose. Come, let me introduce you."

He turns to his companion. "This is Steel-Arrow, from Forge-Fire. You've heard of him? He was the one who slew the Tyrannidon over on Aegis V."

Do you:

A. Feign familiarity and say, "Yes, of course. Everyone's heard THAT tale."
B. Say: "I've not heard, but it sounds like am impressive tale. Perhaps you'll tell it to me sometime."

Steel-Arrow waves his hand. "It is nothing. A small feat, especially compared to the... ah... impressive specimen you brought back."

He turns to Ashen-Blade. "Has Clan Sky-Spear pledged only you then?"

Ashen-Blade gestures in irritation. "Pledge? Old friend, I volunteered. My matriarch was going to ask Kiln-Cut to join this venture."

"Kiln-Cut? That arrogant young son of a b..."

He turns to you. "Apologies - shouldn't really be gossiping, but he's a really unlikeable fellow. So, Three-Claw, you're a Cloud-Viper; any idea what this meeting will be about?"

Do you answer:

A. "To discuss the mission, I would guess, and determine the next step".
B. I'm not certain. I just received a summon, same as you, with no details.

"Right." He looks around. "Quite a few familiar faces. This is drawing a good crowd. I've never seen so many clan insignias in one place." He turns to Ashen-Blade. "Flying solo again? As always?"

The elite hunter clicks in amusement. "Of course. Best to stick to what I know." He turns to you.

"I hear you're putting together a team, Three-Claw. That is good. Strength in numbers. How many do you have now?"

You answer:

He is interrupted by the aide, announcing the Matriarch's readiness.

"Well, another time then. Come, let's see what this is about."

The two of you enter the meeting chambers, along with the other hunters. Within, you see the Matriarch and several advisors from various clans.

She waits for the hunters to array themselves, and speaks.

"Thank you for coming. You've all been briefed by your clan leaders in the nature of this mission and its importance, so I will not waste time repeating it."

"The first step will be establishing contact with several human factions. Who among you wishes to volunteer for this mission?"

Ashen-Blade, beside you, speaks up. "I would, honorable Matriarch. I have dealt with their kind many times in the past."

The Matriarch gestures approval. "Who else?"

The Matriarch turns to the crowd once again.

"Next, the plan calls for subterfuge - we require the infiltration and capture of a Weyland warship, as an asset for use in both drawing the humans into conflict with each other as well as to gather intelligence. Who wishes to volunteer for this venture?"

Because this is important shit, and we've got zero experience dealing with humans beyond murdering their robots.

Let the people who know what the hell they're doing take care of it, while we do stuff we're good at. We can learn about human diplomacy at a later time, when we're not in the middle of a multi-clan mission to fuck over the largest evil science corporation in the galaxy.
>>
>>24893967

Honestly, that'd put us out of Pandora. Which is where the fun will generally happen.

>>A. Volunteer

You raise your fist and volunteer yourself. Beside you, Steel-Arrow and a few others raise their fists as well.

Your Matriarch gestures approval. "Thank you, hunters."

She then proceeds to name a few other tasks, such as staking out Fey'lenn's orbit, tracking Weyland movements.

There was a few more shuffling of roles, but eventually, all the hunters are accounted for, and the tasks filled.

She assigns each group of hunters a particular advisor, and informs everyone to be alert for further summons, and enjoy the hospitality of Cloud Viper in the meantime.

As you walk out, you catch Steel-Arrow, with three other hunters who also volunteered for your task.

"Looks like we'll be working together. Well, I'm excited. Three-Claw, you know this city best. What do you say we find a place together and have a bit of food and drink?"

A. Decline, saying that you're quite busy today.
B. Accept, and suggest a hunter's lodge nearby as the venue.

>>

>>B. Accept, and suggest a hunter's lodge nearby as the venue.

You tell them about a nearby hunter's lodge. The five of you make way to the "Red Trophy", a lodge and tavern with a good reputation among local hunters.

You invite them in, and order a few drinks.

You make small-talk.

You find out the names of the three hunters.

Burning-Scythe from Clan Gold-Bastion
Quick-Shadow from Clan Night-Prowler
Seeking-Eye from Clan High-Arch

You also find out that among you, only Steel-Arrow and yourself own ships.

"Looks like we'll be in two teams," he tells you.

"Three-Claw, you said already have a team mate and you were looking for one more member. As it works out, that makes us two teams of three each. What sort of skills are you looking for to round out your third?"

You're looking for someone with experience, you tell him. He clicks in amusement. "Well, that's all of us, I think. Anyway, more drinks!"

As you chat some more with each hunter, you mentally prepare a dossier for each.

Burning-Scythe from Clan Gold-Bastion:

Personality: Easy-going and relaxed.
Specialty: Explosives and demolitions.
Experienced in: Hunting underground.
Preferred weapon: A heavy, high-yield plasma pistol.

Quick-Shadow from Clan Night-Prowler:

Personality: Disciplinarian. Very formal, but cordial; not talkative.
Specialty: Long range fire power.
Experienced in: Stake-outs, extended hunts in dense jungles.
Preferred weapon: A heavily customized spear gun.

Seeking-Eye from Clan High-Arch

Personality: Sociable, but turns dead serious when talking shop.
Specialty: Medium-range combat
Experienced in: Taking on multiple hard-meat and winning.
Preferred weapon: A large, ancient-looking reflex disc that's seen a lot of use.

C. Ourself and Stutter-Tan can cover close range then, with Seeking-Eye covering range

A. sounds good. We are going to have a lot of demolitions in our near future.

We should pick up a plasma pistol at some point. Our plasma caster makes it redundant in most situations, BUT as our dad demonstrated it's possible to use the pistol and caster at the same time when the need arises.
>>
PredatorQuest, will you be taking artistic licence with what happens to the other team off-screen, or will our choices here affect how they do?
>>
>>24894724
>>A. Ask Burning-Scythe to tell you more about himself

You chat some more with Burning-Scythe and find out a bit more about his history. He has been hunting for a good 19 years since his blooding, and has seen plenty of combat. He served a long time on of Gold-Bastion's heavy frigates (which is why he never invested in his own ship) and was responsible for surveying planets for valuable ore and natural resources.

He's spent quite a bit of time underground, sometimes days and weeks at a time, and has fought hard-meat on many occasions in addition to whatever dangerous fauna lurks underground on some of the more exotic planets.

He tells you the story of how he once drilled a hole straight into a queen's chamber when clearing out a rogue infestation and blew the cavern wide open with a crate of explosives.

Do you:

A. Ask him if he'd like to join your team.
B. Ask Quick-Shadow to tell you more about himself
C. Ask Seeking-Eye to tell you more about himself

>C
While Burning-Scythe sounds like a good choice, let's ask the others first to see which will fit our team the best.
>>
>>24894853
>>C. Ask Seeking-Eye to tell you more about himself

You chat up Seeking-Eye next, and find out a bit more about his background. It has been 15 years since his blooding, and he spent a lot of it fighting in the arena.

His father was a famous fighter, and after retiring, opened an arena where exotic beasts were captured and carted from all over the galaxy, and it served as both a spectator sport and a place to hold combat trials for clan High-Arch.

After his father died of age, he was asked by the clan elders to look after the arena. He complied, and fought there often himself. He did this for four years, honing his skills as a famed gladiator, before becoming bored. He instead joined one of the clan's elite hunters to tour various worlds and capturing large, ferocious specimens back for use in his arena.

A. Ask Burning-Scythe to join your team.

on an unrelated note, my paranoia made me think that having the night-douche on the other team will mean he will try to subvert our efforts, and lead to many a bad thing, ending up with the night-douches declared badbloods

>B. Ask Quick-Shadow to tell you more about himself

You haven't heard much from Quick-Shadow, and it seems he prefers to drink in silence. But after a few rounds, he slowly opens up and begin to tell you a bit more about himself.

Of the 14 years he has spent hunting since his blooding, 9 of it has been spent on a jungle planet on the edge of the galaxy. He was part of a Night-Prowler hunting team sent there to evaluate the local tribal civilization. The locals turned out to be far more savage than they expected, and after a disastrous ambush, his two teammates were killed and he himself took a large slug to the chest.

Their ship, deciding the entire team was wiped out, lifted off on auto-pilot and left him there.

He spent the next 14 years alone in the jungle, surviving and hunting, surviving and hunting, until a few years ago, when the Night-Prowlers finally sent a second team and picked him up.

That's all you managed to get out of him.

You have an excellent meal with your fellow hunters, and everyone had a good time.

You approach Burning-Scythe and ask him if he'd like to join you for this mission.

The upbeat hunter slaps your back and says, "Absolutely. We'll make a great team!"

"Then it's settled!" Steel-Arrow tells you.

He puts his arms around Quick-Shadow and Seeking-Eye, and the five of you have one more round of drinks.

So we'll just tell him we're not taking him. Awkward for us and disappointing for the unblooded, but the mission comes before passing emotions.

we pay that bill, we pay that bill hard
>>
>>24895363
Didn't the matriarch AND our mentor instruct us to take a clan unblooded along.
>>
>>24895363
He'll be fine.

I mean we did pretty good for ourselves.
>>
>>24895363
He passed all his tests, and held his own against us. On top of that, our mentor described him as "reliable".
>>
>>24895310
>>A. Pick up the bill.

You sort out the bill and bid your fellow hunters good night. They thank you for the hospitality and you part ways for now.

The night grows late, and you return to your domicile. You message your mother and tell her you've found your team.

You wake up the next day and check your wrist computer. You find the work on your ship has been completed, and all the upgrades are in place.

You find a summon from your mentor, but the location is in the Cloud-Viper orbital defense station.

You also see a summon from the Archivist, telling you she has important informational for you.

Do you:

A. Head to the spaceport and fly off to see your mentor.
B. Head to the archives.
>>
>>24895397
B. Maybe we can get a quickie?
>>
>>24895363
we already chose him and informed him of this, and both our mentor and matriarch recommended taking someone like him along

Archives first, our mentor might tell us something vital and urgent in space that doesn't give us a chance to go back.

>B. Head to the archives.

>B. Head to the archives.

You proceed to the archives and find place filled with activity. The are is filled with technicians from various clans contributing to the study on your specimen.

The archivist spots you, and hurries over. She hands you a data-chip.

"Here are the memories from the Synthetic head, sorted out and organized. There are a few interesting bits - but if you look at this... "

You follow to where she's pointing on the holo-screen.

"Maps. Movement patterns for Weyland assets. Possible supply routes for reinforcing their colony on Fey'lenn. Should be useful. That's all."

You thank her, and allows her to return to her duties.

You make way for the shipyard, and your ship.

You spot young Sharp-Strike waiting for you. He is examining the outside of your ship with awe. He carries with him an equipment case.

He greets you.

"I can't use this yet; not until my blooding anyway. Mentor told me to leave this with you."

You take the case and stash it in your storage bay.

"May I come along?" he asks.

You realize he has probably never left the planet surface before.

You say:

A. "Yes, sure."
B. "No, not yet."

You agree, and instruct him to enter.

He looks at the ship's interior in awe.

He follows you to the cockpit and sits down in the gunner's seat.

You strap yourself in, and perform a diagnosis. You spend some time to verify the systems are working in good order and the upgrades you have asked for have been performed.

With the checks complete, you start the engine and lift off.

The ship feels heavier than your previous one, but you find it to be surprisingly agile for its size.

You give the throttle a gentle nudge. The engines roar to life as you speed away from the surface.

Do you:

A. Spend some time putting the ship through combat manoeuvres and get familiar with how it handles.
B. Head for the station.
>>

You forgo the trials for now and head straight for the station.

You gently guide the ship into the magnetic harness and disembark.

You make your way to the comm room, and find your mentor, Steel-Arrow, and an unfamiliar male surrounding a large holo-screen.

Do you:

A. Take Sharp-Strike into the meeting with you.
B. Instruct him to watch the ship.
C. Tell him to spend some time in the shooting range, and hone his ranged skills.
D. Tell him to spend some time in the simulators and practice his piloting skills.
>>
>>24895737
He demonstrated a bit of skill after some mentoring with it. Besides in the confines of a spaceship do you really want him dropping mines all over, or would you rather have him throwing a (recoverable) disc, and chopping dudes up with spearstaff + armswords

>>24895897
>>A. Take Sharp-Strike into the meeting with you.

You bid Sharp-Strike to follow.

You enter, and are greeted by your mentor. "Three-Claw. Good of you to join. This is Fleet-master Night-Star, of clan Night-Prowler. The Matriarch has instructed I oversee the task of capturing a Weyland ship, and we'll need the Night-Prowler fleet to do it."

You introduce yourself to the Fleet-master, who returns a formal greeting.

You look at the holo-screen, and find it to be a galactic map. Human territories are highlighted.

"There," Night-Star points to a line extending along a section of the map. "That's a convoy route. Weyland transports shuttling colonists and technicians. That's the best target."

Your mentor clicks in irritation. "That's a civilian convoy, Fleet-master."

"Which should make its capture easier, would it not?"

Your mentor looks up at the Night-Prowler keenly. "They are unarmed. It is against the honor code."

The Night-Prowler clicks with irritation. "It's not a hunt, Cloud-Viper. It's an easy target. My fleet has been tracking it. We can take this with absolute certainty."

Do you:

A. Intervene and support your mentor.
B. Intervene and support the Night-Prowler

You step forward and stand next to your mentor.

"Jackal is right," you tell the Night-Prowler. "There is no honor in attacking the unarmed."

Your mentor clicks in approval.

The Night-Prowler stares at you and your mentor for a moment, and clicks in irritation.

"If there were a more suitable target, I would agree. But this is the only route which fits our time frame that we have managed to track."

Do you:

A. Suggest patience, and ask the Night-Prowler fleet to continue searching for a military target.

I thought that was implied given we are all looking for a target together.
>>
>>24896174
C. Provide the data-chip you received from the Archivist and ask if it could help.

You insert the data-chip into the holo-screen, and a few more routes show themselves on the map.

"Reinforcement routes to Fey'lenn," you tell them, "courtesy of a former Weyland synthetic."

The Fleet-Master squints his eyes and taps rapidly on the wrist computer. He points to the new routes. "I will ask my fleet to probe these routes for trails and exotic particles. In the meantime, my fleet is positioned to strike the civilian convoy. You need to make a decision. Once I reposition my fleet, that window will be gone."

Your mentor waves his arm. "Call them off. I will not dishonor our people."

Do you:

A. Support your mentor.
B. Suggest Night-Prowler keep a few ships on standby, just in case a more suitable target is not able to be found.

>>A. Support your mentor.

You voice your approval.

The Night-Prowler seems irritated, but agrees. You watch as the Fleet-master orders his ships around to the new routes you provided. As you wait patiently for results, the rest of the team trickles in.

Burning-Scythe takes position next to you and claps you on your shoulder.

The Fleet-master once again checks his wrist-computer, and announces his findings.

"This one," he points to a route marked in red, "has seen plenty of activity. It's a deep-system patrol route. Looks like two frigates and a light destroyer."

"This one," he points to a blue colored route, "Looks to be for reinforcing. One solitary large ship carrying a large amount of fighters and two light destroyers in escort. Both, if you ask me, are quite difficult to trap and capture."

"The third route," he continues, "does not look like it's seen use in the last few weeks."

Do you:

B. Suggest intercepting the reinforcement route (blue).

Do you:

A. Agree with your mentor.
B. Suggest the other option.
C. Wait to hear what the rest of the team thinks.

C, our mentor knows more about this than we do.

You remain silent.

Steel-Arrow speaks first. "Well, it's far outside of my area of expertise, but that sounds logical. I'll support it."

Quick-Shadow speaks next. "I don't like it. They set regular patrols there because they expect trouble. We might find more company than just those ships."

Seeking eye agrees. "Right. Reinforcement routes, on the other hand, tend to be stable and uneventful."

Burning-Scythe clicks thoughtfully. "Larger ships are more difficult to board. There's more redundancy. More things can go wrong, and the defenders generally have more time to react. I vote we go for the patrol."

Sharp-Strike remains silent.

Do you:

A. Throw in your vote for the patrol.
B. Throw in your vote for the reinforcement route.
C. Ask Sharp-Strike to speak up.

You know, I thought of that comparison earlier. Shame he's from Night-Prowler or I probably would have voted for him to be on our team.
>>
>>24896551

Patrols by nature are designed with the purpose of disengaging from combat or an ambush in order to report back. They will be expecting and looking for trouble.

Reinforcements are generally more laid back and have lower levels of training and also what are they trying to reinforce exactly. Removing the fighters might help us in the future.

So I am voting for B

>>24896551
>A. Throw in your vote for the patrol.

A. Throw in your vote for the patrol.

You voice your support for hitting the patrol.

The team proceeds to launch into a lengthy but fruitful discussion about the merits of each, and after a few hours of talking and planning, the team is satisfied, and agrees to hit the patrol.

The Night-Prowler fleet-master informs his ships, and orders them into position.

"It may be another week or two before the next patrol," he tells you, "but you should leave within the next day or so. Here are the coordinates. You will find my fleet waiting. We shall discuss the specifics on the bridge of my flagship."

With that, he leaves the room.

Your mentor speaks. "That's your mission. Go there, capture at least one of those frigates in good condition, and report back. I will be there personally, to coordinate the operation."

I am now imagining a Yautja attempting to use a cigar without the benefit of human lips.

And now I am imagining a Yautja piercing a cigar with his bottom fang and just leaving it there because it can't figure out how to work it.

Their mandibles are dextrous enough to be used to communicate - they could easily hold a cigar, possibly without puncturing it. It would give them one hell of a slur though
>>
>>24896834
I thought they communicated through clicks and barks. Maybe even ultrasonic vocalizations.

>>A. Encourage the young hunter to speak his mind.

You decide to bring the young hunter into the conversation. While discussing possible choice of payload for your missile bay, you clap the young hunter on the shoulder, and ask. "What do you think, Sharp-Strike? What kind of munitions should we carry?"

The young hunter is briefly startled, but quickly regains his compose. "I -ah -I think our priority should be disabling engines. Blowing them up with cannons will just leave us stranded once we capture the ship." He seems pleased with his answer.

"Disruptor torpedoes then." Steel-Arrow responds. "I can carry two on my ship."

"Boarding pods as well," Burning-Scythe suggests.

You continue the discussion for a few more hours, then decide to head back to the surface.

... What do you think makes the clicking? The mandibles. Hell predator masks are built so that when a plasma caster is linked to them a mandible is used to 'pull the trigger', as well as cycle through vision modes and stuff like that, it's not fucking telepathy.
>>
>>24896841
they're clicks and that are more equivalent to gestures and facial expressions

I don't think mandibles work that way, but it's not worth shitting up the thread over.

They have bony tips, they have relatively strong muscles for their size so they can be moved rapidly - congrats you now have clicking.

Now with this biological feature that essentially amounts to having 4 fingers around your mouth, I'm pretty sure you could develop some uses for it - like controlling your gun so you dont have to use your hands.

Novels describe the mandibles as making the clicks. When masks are off they also are used in body language

Its where the 'dreads' come from... the sockets are so deep though that I'd imagine they have a pretty huge number of nerve endings.

A caress could be quite erotic, while literal hairpulling quite painful. I've also heard the theory that the dreads are used to help cool the body (lots of blood flow when hot)
>>
>>24896986
that would work for normal yautja, but the ones on the super preds are soo deep and weird that it makes me think the designers/sculpters forgot that those dreads are they're version of hair

how the fuck can you have them braided into dreads on becoming a blooded hunter if they are already dreads?

the dreading of a normal pred takes many hours and sometimes days and is extremely painful, yet it seems that super preds come pre-dreaded, wtf?
>>
>>24897014
It was a bad movie and shouldn't be canon.
>>
>>24897024
the only good thing about that movie was how baddass Shaw was, if a legit Yautja clan comes along and find what the jungle-hunters were doing, Shaw would get offered a spot with a pact in no time
