You are a Magical Girl, and you're currently finding it hard to talk to one of your colleagues. Well, you've always had problems with communication, you'll be the first to admit that - but it's made doubly more difficult by the fact that you're being interrogated about a certain idol you're about to meet for coffee in a couple of hours.

Minase Iori, specifically. One of the top-billing idols of 765 Productions. You have a history together, although you'll also be the first to admit that it's been a rocky one to say the least. A disagreeable first meeting, rescuing her just as she's about to be raped by gun-toting fanatics, dragging her out of a charnel house that started off as a rather peaceful gala...not to mention the misunderstanding that you caused, what with playing around with your aide's soul gem in the middle of a phone conversation.

And don't forget how you said goodbye to her, just before you left for Siberia. Yes, that didn't go down too well, now did it?
>>
>>24971957

You're tempted to just lie about it. You've done it before, either by blatant, bald-faced misdirection or simply clamming shut, trapping the interrogator in stony silence.

But lying to Tomoe Mami, well. It's not something you can do. Not with her looking at you like that.

Warm amber eyes, lustrous as honey, staring into your soul, expecting nothing but complete and utter honesty from you.

You look down and find yourself mumbling your answer, finding your throat painfully dry as you swallow.

It's...just information you're after, honestly. Information about Kirishima Ruri. Nothing more and nothing less.

"Yes, and...?" Mami's smile widens just the tiniest bit, nodding, encouragingly.

...Well. Maybe...there's also the bit about...letting Iori down a bit easily. You've been thinking hard about this, and...while Iori is a nice girl and all that, you're not too sure if letting this go on is unhealthy. If...if Mami could help with that, then...

"Ah. Well, that wasn't so hard, was it?" Mami nods, her smile changing just the subtlest bit. It's a different sort of smile now, one with a note of relief in it, along with just a bit of disappointment if you're any judge. "I suppose, Chiaki-san, that you're worried that you're stringing her along, and want to make sure that she understands what's really between the both of you?

...Yes. That's....that's it, exactly.

"Then I suggest, Chiaki-san, that you do so by telling her the truth, as you would normally do it." Mami leans back on her chair, a serious look to her face, now. "...Don't try to take any airs, or buy her presents, or anything like that. Lay open your heart to her, as plainly as simply as you can. She'll most probably cry, and do what you can to comfort her like a friend would. That's the most important bit, please do well to remember it."

You nod. You guessed as much, really, but to hear it from Mami herself gave it the legitimacy you so desperately needed.

[1/2]
>>
>>24971957

You're not too sure about that comforting like a friend would, though. Would that mean taking her to a bar, or something? Kyoko usually did that, with you, and you remember doing the same for her when she'd gotten into some rough times.

"Oh, heavens, no! That sends the wrong message entirely!" Mami's alarm gives way to a nervous giggle. "U-um, no, Chiaki-san. Just...be there for her. Give her tissues, listen to her sadness and anger, be there if she needs someone to blame and hurt. She will need it. After that, if you so choose, leave the possibility open for friendship. You get along well enough together, Chiaki-san, and there are wounds that friends can heal better than lovers."

Right. Friends. You can work with that.

The blonde nods again, her smile coming to the fore once more. "Again, it's up to you what path you want to take with Iori. There's no wrong or right path - just make sure that the soonest you pick one, you stick to it no matter what."

...Mami really knows her way around complicated matters like this, huh?

It's her turn to be awkward, now, and she giggles again. "N-no, Chiaki-san. I'm just...well, I do watch a lot of soap operas, haha..."

Right. Mami seems to have equipped you with enough relationship advice for now.

Is there anything else you wanted to ask her?

Yeah, but from memory it wasn't from lack of trying. Though I may be getting details confused, it has admittedly been a while since I read through the archives.

My point being, given Kharn's "Fuck everything in the Officio" stance, I doubt there's going to be regulations against us hooking up with Midori, even if it has to be on the sly regarding work vs personal life.

Am I the only one dreading the inevitable inclusion of some kind of Iori expy as a villain in the Miracle Midori books/anime?

Admittedly the only worse option is Iori reads them or sees the show, and decides she should become a magical girl like Miracle Midori so we'll love her. That or jumping to the conclusion that the events are based off our real relationship with Midori somehow.

You thank her for the advice, and she smiles. "You're quite welcome, Chiaki-san. Now, is there anything else I can do for you, Warmaster?"

...Well. If she's asking, then...would it be possible for Mami to pull your file up? You'd like to go over it, and see if it could fill in some of the glaring holes in your memory, or at least those that have to do with your time in the Officio.

"You file, Chiaki-san?" Mami blinks at this, but nods after a moment. "Well, normally the Warmaster's personal file is usually locked away for the Incubator's eyes only after she gets the position, but...I'll see what I can do." Her fingers move underneath the screen, in such a speed that you wonder if being a secretary isn't her actual calling, besides being your personal blonde goddess of luck and salvation. "I'll deliver it myself personally tonight. Are you going to spend the night in your quarters, Chiaki-san, or are you going back to your apartment?"

Uh. Hm. Well, you were hoping to get some sleep in your apartment later. You're not all that comfortable sleeping in the same bed that Kharn collected quite a few specimens of her collection on, no matter what Kyuubey said about the mattress being replaced.

"Hee. Well, that's understandable. Alright, I'll drop by then with your file, and we can go over it together if you like."

That'd be great. You thank her again.

"Oh, no, it's my pleasure, Chiaki-san, don't worry about it. Now, is that everything?"

...You open your mouth to say yes, but immediately shut it as another thought comes out of the blue for you.

Is...is it possible for her to help you out with your hair, too? YOu're just at a loss on what to do with it. It's grown out much too long for your liking, and it is getting uncomfortably warm during the day.

"Eh? I thought it was a nice look for you, Chiaki-san. It makes you look...well, mysterious and stylish." It's then that she giggles. "Well, sort of like Kharn, then, I suppose, but certainly a different kind of appeal."

Yes. You're not Kharn. That needs to be said.

"Of course, of course. Hmm...well, if you'd like, I can take care of that personally, too. And I promise not to do it the way Kharn did, with a combat knife." Mami giggles again, shaking her head. "Oh, I remember that. It was such a rough cut she did for you, I really had to spend some time just making it look presentable. You seemed to grow into it well enough, anyway."

Ah. Well. If...if it's a haircut she's talking about, then you'll look forward to it.

"Of course it's a haircut, silly! Besides, we have to make sure you look presentable for your client. It's a four-day security detail job, right? You need to look your best, moreso that you're Warmaster now. You have to make a good impression."

Good impression. Right. You'll...try to work on that.

"I'm sure you will, Chiaki-san." Again, the smile. "Well, if that's just about everything, then I'll meet you later, then?"

It's a date, you tell her. Finding your cheeks burning at your own words.

Mami giggles at this, making you blush even harder. "Chiaki-san, do be careful on how you say things!"

You manage to smile at this as the both of you finally say goodbye to each other. You close the laptop as the call ends.

Well, that's that. Hopefully you remember what to say later.

You look over your desk to check up on Kumatora's progress - and you note that she'd gone through half of the panties already, her own smartphone clicking and flashing with every specimen photographed. Each one carefully documented, before being packed into the box.

"No problem here, sempai!" Kumatora flashes you a grin. "Oh, uh, I did find something interesting!" She plucks out two specimens from the pile in front of her, before standing up and placing them carefully on your desk. "They're the same date and place as the one you're keeping right now, sempai! Different names, though, but there you are!"

Huh. Really? You slide them closer to you for inspection. One is a completely frilly black number, barely even qualifying as a pair of panties and more of an over-embroidered, triangular piece of black silk tied to black garter. The other one is a plain and simple white variety, with a golden sheriff's star embroidered at the front.

The former is owned by an Annie May Springfield. The latter, owned by Mary Sue "Totally Awesome Alabama Liquid Snake" Springfield. Same date, same place.

Twins. Kharn did a pair of twins at the same time.

God dammit, Kharn.

Kumatora rocks back and forth on her heels, somewhat uneasily, as if unused to being in one place for too long. "Should...should I put them back in the pile or what, sempai?"

How do you respond?

You tell Kumatora to pack them away with the rest, and she does so with admirable efficiency and enthusiasm. While it's an amusing thought - to be able to meet with whoever owned the panties and just whip them out at your leisure, to see them squirm and fidget in embarassment at you owning such an intimate belonging of theirs - it's not something you're into. You're not so crass to take fun in something like that.

...Of course, you did just take photographs of two of your aides making out in the elevator because of hat-related shenanigans, but that's neither here nor there. Besides, that was just to document the results of your experiment, and not for something tawdry like blackmail.

Besides, it's not like you need any more help with that regard. Mary Sue? Annie May? Totally Awesome Sweet Alabama Liquid Snake? With names like that, well. Murderface seems a whole lot tamer.

You drum your fingers idly on the polished top of your mahogany desk, before realizing that Kumatora had left you Wendy's panties, leaving them untouched when she returned the twins' underwear to the pile. ...Well, you did pick these out for a reason. Maybe you'll indulge yourself this one time. You have a feeling she'd want it back, anyway. Maybe, just maybe, it'd distract her long enough that your meeting won't end in another double-murder.

Surreptitiously slipping the laminated piece of silk into your inventory - praying to whatever god there is out there for Kumatora not to suddenly look up and see you doing so - it's here that you wonder what to do with the rest of your time, before your meeting with Iori.

You have a couple of choices. You've got time for one of them.

[]Look for Sayaka. She's probably training the newbies right now.
[]Bring Midori lunch. You've had the food they serve you in the sick bay wing, and it's horrible. You'd like to spare her that.
[]Look for Kyoko. Check up on how she's preparing for her assignment.

You decide to bring Midori lunch for today. You've spent your share of time in the sick bay yourself, and while you can certainly understand that those recovering from injury or sickness need a specific diet designed to help get them back into fighting shape - the reason that sick bay food had always tasted horrible continues to escape your understanding, still.

Was it something deliberate on their part, some sort of psychological tactic to make Magical Girls train harder and fight harder to avoid being injured, and in turn avoid having to tolerate such garbage? Or was it by design, that something healthy for you really has to taste like something you'd rather not eat, even if it meant starvation?

...Well, you're probably exagerrating here, but you still can't forget how you were served boiled, mushy carrot porridge that one time. Just an entire bowl of boiled, mashed carrot and rice. There wasn't even a side dish you could pick at, not even a miserable cup of soup to slurp.

It's with this in mind that you tell Kumatora to continue with the underwear-packing and so on. If she finishes before you get back, she's to seal the box, label it with the recipient being a certain Director Souji of the Siberian R&D base, and haul it off to Logistics. She should also lock the door behind her as she leaves.

Kumatora flashes you her eager, sunbeam-bright grin, and salutes. "You can count on me, sempai!"

Yes. You're pretty sure you could. You thank her, and after putting the Warmaster Cap back on, you leave the raven-haired Eversor to her duties as you make your way towards the office cafeteria.

Because green is best
>>
>>24973259
Yeah, there's a food place store thing. Let's get food from there.
>>
>>24973315

It's an hour or so before the lunch rush officially hits, but as you get nearer and nearer to the headquarter's chow hall do you realize that there's a lot more people in here that you participated. Most of them active-duty magical girls, chatting with each other, giggling, some whispering to each other fervently, sharing gossip in hushed whispers. Some are laughing uproariously, bringing to mind a certain red-haired Eversor, although you don't see her one-eyed mug at the moment. Maybe she's still preparing for that mission you gave her. Maybe.

The moment you step into the cafeteria, though, is when the entire place falls silent. You blink at this, not quite sure just what happened - when a cursory glance around tells you that everyone is staring at your direction. At you - and at the hat you're wearing.

. . .

Well. Shit.

It seems you've suddenly got a captive audience, here.

Despite feeling yourself break out in a cold sweat, you force yourself to keep moving. To keep walking. The void left by the cafeteria's sudden silence filled only by the sound of your heartbeat thudding in your ears, forming an odd backbeat to the sound of your heels clacking against tiled floor.

"Don't mind me," You hear yourself murmur as you pass by the first table occupied by dumbstruck magical girls, in a deadpan tone of voice that sounds markedly smoother and colder from the usual rough growl you're accustomed to speaking in.

A sudden compulsion that you're much too slow to think about - much less suppress - has you reaching up to rake the fingers of your right hand quickly through your hair, flipping the mass of thick strands over your shoulder with a frosty flourish. A repeat of the same gesture you did earlier, at the entrance of the building.

Before you can ponder how that came to be, your legs - now seemingly already on autopilot - had already brought you in front of the cafeteria counter, the crowd in front of it quickly parting to give you a wide berth, staring at you with rapt attention.

You clear your throat quietly at this, before stepping forward once more and then pointing with an index finger at one of the packed lunch sets on sale. ...You're not even reading their labels, you're just pointing at the one you spotted first.

"I'll have this, please." You tell the cafeteria lady, an aging housewife type who's trying not to stare at you too hard, and she quickly wraps the packed lunch up for you, holding it out a moment later. You reach into your inventory for your cash card, but she quickly shakes her head. "O-oh, no, please. The...the Warmaster always eats free. O-on the house!"

[1/2]
>>
>>24973962

You blink at this, before accepting the lunch with a bow. "My thanks," You hear yourself say again, once more in the cold, prissy tone you're finding more and more irritating. You turn sharply on your heel, clutching the package to your chest with one hand, and you leave the cafeteria as quickly as you entered it.

You let out the breath you've been holding after ducking into an empty corridor and leaning your back against the wall. Your heartbeat still pounding in your ears, adrenalin coursing painfully through your veins.

Is...is this what being a Warmaster really feels like? You...you were hoping it'd be something like any other promotion. You get a new rank, new responsibilities, a higher pay grade. You weren't expecting something like this, being the sudden center of attention when all you want to do is to just fucking buy lunch for someone.

You spend a few moments getting your bearings back, before tearing the hat off your head again and pinning it underneath one arm. You make your way back to Midori's room as soon as you can, and you burst in on her drawing something on a sketchpad, a newly-sharpened pencil in her hand.

"S-Sempai!" Midori's eyes grow wide, and she clutches the sketchpad close to her chest. "What's...what's wrong? What happened? Did...did you run all the way here? You're as pale as a sheet!" It's only then that she notices the package still clutched in your hands. "...Is...is that for me?"

How do you respond?
>>
>>24973973
"Yes, it's for you. Much better than hospital food, I think.

And this job is crazy. I'm the centre of attention in any room I walk into. It's creepy and scary.

Also, I think the title comes with a complimentary stick up the arse."

[x] Tell her our trademark deadpan that she just needs to cook for herself when she comes home, since we`re going to be on a mission for the next few days.

>>
>>24974288
We gotta ask her to illusion herself as a shotgun and hold her bridal style.

at least once
>>
>>24974251
I think the damage has been done enough already on that point. It's better than with Iori with Midori's MIND HIDING BULLET SKILLS but yeah, she's already a weak spot.

So putting her in our bed keeps her more safe in some respects.
>>
>>24974251
It's Noir quest, inevitably, no matter what we do, someone is going to target Midori.

This is when we remind people that, despite our promotion, we are still the magical girl who slaughtered a building worth of professionals singlehandedly. And now? Now we have access to an entire Officio at our beck and call.

>>24974263
I like this plan.
>>
>>24974236
>or safe to go back to her family.
When we first turned Midori, we asked QB to put her parents under guard because they might get targeted by Jyuubey.
QB said that no normal Incubator would fall so low, but he said that since the 10th was such a rogue, that he would make sure of Midori's parents safety.

They might have even been relocated.

Also, fights between Magical Girls seems like it would be something forbidden between Officio's. It takes energy to create a Meguca, energy that is subtracted from the Incubator's own store of Grief Seed energy that's supposed to go towards their quota.
Enough Meguca's die, and it'll result in a significant reduction in Incubator energy collection operations.
You'd think that the Home Office would have severe penalties for things that could negatively affect the operation.
>>
>>24974209
No promises but I'm sticking it in the backlog pile.
>>
>>24974251
Remember, Midori is already our aide and, though less known, tied to our soul gem. It's not like someone with bad intentions wouldn't already go after her, regardless of any intimate implications.
>>
>>24974251
Someone already used Mami to get to Chiaki before. It'll be impossible to function if we're afraid of one of our buddies is going to be abducted and used as a bargaining chip. It comes with the territory.

Anyone else think we should go get a bento for Pinky or go to the coffee shop early and share a drink with her? She may need some placating fairly soon.
>>
>>24974288
That's going to corrupt her Soul Gem like nobody's business.

>>24974303
>>24974310
>>24974319
>>24974320

Point taken, we'll just have to follow up on asking Kyouko/Sayaka to train her in fighting.

As for Pinky, can we do it after Iori?
>>
>>24974315
>ights between Magical Girls seems like it would be something forbidden between Officio's

do you not recall the bit where Amnesic Murderface/Girl A slaughtered thirty-odd meguca whop were planning to ambush and kill her party?
>>
Uhhh.. Do you guys think its good idea to leave Midori alone while we are away?
After all Jyubey has been hellbent about getting her back. I don` think he gave up after sacrificing one Meguca just so he could get us and Midori with a witch.

The safest place until we come back is probably the Officio building. So just let her sleep in our Warmaster-Bedroom.
>>
For all we know Midori already has a nice apartment, we don't need to shoe her into our bed as rapidly as possible. If we're not careful, we'll be the ones with the stalker reputation instead of her.
>>
>>24974312
>This is when we remind people that, despite our promotion, we are still the magical girl who slaughtered a building worth of professionals singlehandedly. And now? Now we have access to an entire Officio at our beck and call.

Prepare the assault
>b-but warmaster, they have heavy gun emplacements, snipers, even some tamed witches. if we attack scores of puella magi will die
Hundreds
>>
>>24974363
Then we ask her first then, see if she wants to.

Refer to:
>>24974263
>>
>>24974343
It was less the 'ambush and kill' and more the 'rape Mami' that set her off.
>>24974348
She'll be with Kyouko.
>>
>>24974343
Yes, I was in those threads, but I'm saying that from a purely energy profit-oriented view, it's inefficient and wasteful.
So either Home Office doesn't have that tight of a control, there's competition between the Incubators that's encouraged by the system, or the energy collection is only secondary to something else, since the Third just up and left his Meguca/Grief Seed collection duties to engross himself more fully in the pure acquisition of human wealth.
>>
>>24974364
>Murderface is now stannis the mannis
>>
>>24974348
>Uhhh.. Do you guys think its good idea to leave Midori alone while we are away?

She'll be with Kyouko. She should be fine.

>>24974363
>or all we know Midori already has a nice apartment,
Given that that apartment would have been provided by Juubey, it's compromised and no longer available.
>>
>>24974363
>Midori already has a nice apartment
One which is already compromised since it's one that she would have had when she was Contracted with Jyuubey.
>>
>>24974343
And that thing got Girl A executed, remember?
>>
>>24974387
Also, given the kind of jobs she was being given and her relative standing in Juubey's Officio, any apartment she had would probably have been a shithole.
>>
>>24974381
If I remember right, there is no Home Office. The Incubators were basically TPed here and tasked with doing the same thing they did in Canon Meguca. Only difference is, they decided to be more "professional" about it. No oversight from any higher authority apart from themselves.

You take a moment to compose yourself, before shutting the door to Midori's room to ensure your privacy. You toss the hat - that fucking hat - onto one of the chairs in the far corner of the room, away from you, away from Midori, before making your way to her bedside. Holding out the packed lunch to the recovering Callidus.

Nothing...happened, you reply after a moment. Nothing worth talking about, anyway. Just work. It's always work.

But you didn't run to get here, no. Just...you were just in a hurry, after all. In a hurry to get her lunch, before the nurses come around to serve her infirmary food, which you would never wish upon anyone.

"You...you didn't have to, though, sempai. The food's not...that good, but it's not that bad either." Midori is blushing as she says this, though, and you see her carefully closing the sketchpad, placing it on her side table along with her pencil - before taking the packed lunch from your hands and placing it on her lap. She starts to unwrap it, taking her time in untying the knotted ends of the wrapping cloth. "You didn't have to go through the trouble, sempai..." She protests again, in a quieter voice.

You frown at this, before shaking your head. It's fine, you tell her. You've had enough of sitting behind desks and being stared at for one day. In any case, she should eat before the bento gets cold, or something.

"A-ah. Well, thank you all the same, sempai--" Midori starts to thank you for the meal, when the both of you finally see the bento you've picked. "Oh. Oh, um." She squeaks, while you could only blink, aghast.

You've picked the one in the pink packed lunch case, with the hearts all over it. The Waifu Special, a playful, cute way for the more amorous of magical girls in the Officio to 'confess' to someone.

I've been considering it and I think it's past due we gave Midori something to do so why don't we have Midori guard Mami. This would also make sure that Midori would be safe from Jyubey.

Heard from a colleague once that when they attacked a witch, ash sprayed out. Another one said that when she killed a familiar, it just disappeared. Never had those problems myself.

What had formerly been a vast field of smooth ice had become an endless lake of blood as my knife struck true over and over, rupturing babbling wooden figures on crude ice skates like they were gibbering sacks of meat (though I was grateful they weren’t; the one barrier I’d been in with meat familiars was an experience I didn’t want to repeat). Near as I could tell, there was no end to them – we’d engaged the witch early. Badly. Underestimated it, and V rushed in.

She wanted to get messy. V loves getting messy on a hunt.

It was hard to blame her. It felt good. Too much of our time lately’d been spent training the FNGs, since Touchdown fucked everything up. The whole Corps was edgy, pent-up. No retirements lately, and no retirements meant no fun for the Rabbits. We were only here at all because the Prima realized that some of us were stir-crazy enough to start busting heads in the city if we didn’t get out soon. Not that the city was any safer if she wasn’t out picking on witches most of the time, but at least this way we got to stretch our legs.

So thanks to V’s blood fetish, we were being gangfucked by pirouetting soldiers and liable to drown in their insides before we cleared enough of them, and every single one we let swirl around for more than a moment pulled a crappy wooden rifle on us that fired crappy wooden bullets that moved at a crappy several hundred miles per fucking hour.

Took about thirty familiars and three shots to the chest before I got sick of that. Don’t like using magic if I can help it – makes the nightmares worse – but in record time I made my way over to V and the latest dismembered puppet she was ramming her scissors into, and I grabbed her arm. Told her we had to haul ass and whipped up a broom. Flying is one of my better tricks, but not my favorite by a long shot. Doesn’t feel all that freeing when you can feel everything of yourself that you’ve managed to hold onto ticking away while you do it. …Actually, it feels pretty much like shit.

So she grabbed onto me and we took off like bats out of hell. I could feel her soul gem resonate as she switched right to cover fire, a minefield of furniture and small objects – dressers, mirrors, and knives, mostly, with the occasional teapot and a clock now and again (and once or twice I swear she pulled out a soda machine) – that began to shake and hurtle toward the familiars below like so many shooting stars. A number were blasted off-course by their godawful toy rifles, but that didn’t matter. It was as much a bunch of shields as anything.

Once we were off the plateau of ice, it was easy to spot the witch, a tiny, misshapen creature like a colorful octopus with long, sickly-looking limbs stretched in all directions, whirling and juggling arenas like the one we’d just escaped to a merry-go-round tune. The sound was distorted, like it was being played from a shitty radio from the 1930’s. It tossed its huge landforms around as though they were paper plates - that was how it got us before. All it had to do was land a hit and it’d send us to the surface of one of those things again, for another bloodbath and another assload more magic use than I wanted to deal with.

I bolted for the main body as quick as I could force my little broom to go, and as we’d expected – and feared – its attention turned from its harmless spinning to our asses. The first swing I managed to skirt by a hair, and the second was held back with a deluge of objects just long enough for us to slip by. The third…The world melted around me as I summoned my stoplight, right on the edge of my broom. Everything took on a dull, fleshy tint, and I squeezed my eyes shut as the light flicked from green to yellow. That was enough. That would be enough to get us through, I hoped. …Any further and it’d have to get uglier than I liked to go.

There was a whoosh overhead, the sound of us narrowly avoiding its swing, but we’d barely gotten a breath before an impact sent us tumbling down, the broom and light both vanishing as soon as I wasn’t focusing on ‘em. The witchtopus had split down the middle, and the figure of a thin young woman made of the same prismatic jelly emerged, her head tilted unnaturally to the side as it shared neckspace with thicker, stronger tendrils. I guessed one of those was what dismounted us right before I hit the ground with an uncomfortable gloop.

It wasn’t an ideal landing, but I had it better than V. She didn’t scream – I knew she wouldn’t – but V, it had caught. It was afraid of V, V could have stopped it. On her way down she’d scissored right through a couple of its limbs, I think, and it was returning the favor. It even dropped its shitty arenas to latch onto her with more of its limbs, one to each of hers, with another around her waist and another around her neck.

I couldn’t hear the noise it made when it ripped her arm off, and I’m sort of glad. I couldn’t help her there. Couldn’t get to her fast enough.

Not sure yet how I feel about that.

It was then that I heard the Prima. She said later she was worried about us, about how long it took. That’s why she’s the Prima, I guess.

(3/6)
>>
>>24974876
The air filled with noise, when the Prima would transform. It was like hanging around Malal, sort of. Didn’t make my teeth itch, but it did…something. Seemed to make everyone sick in a different way. The world would twist when she used her magic, like it didn’t make sense anymore. Like seeing in three dimensions was no different than looking at a painting of a sunset, and realizing that there was no depth to it. To say nothing of the…things, just playing around at the edge of your vision. It was horrible the first time and it never really got better. Most people start crying. Or throwing up. Usually both.

She didn’t seem to care about anything that was going on as she walked along the gooey ground. The witch’s whole barrier seemed to shiver as it took on that painting-like quality, and it dropped V like a sack of bleeding stumps (which was shockingly close to an accurate descriptor). There was a gleam as the Prima whispered to her patrons, the gleaming, golden scythes she’d recently taken up. I couldn’t hear what she said to the witch before she leapt on her, but I knew. V did too, and without even thinking, we mouthed the words along with her:

“Die for me.”

Fear isn’t something the girls of the Wonderland Corps, the Rabbits, feel anymore. It’s something bred out of us by experience, something stolen from us by our demons. To some of us, becoming magical girls was our only chance to save ourselves from our own darkness. To some of us, it was the chance to rend and slaughter, to devour our enemies. To give in to our anger and our hate, to unleash our terrible beasts. To most of us, though…it was both. We threw away fear long before we became Eversors. We were monsters long before we were magical girls.

I like to think that’s what brought us all together. Why we all gathered around the Prima…around Annie. Our Lady. Our Alice. The Eversor Prima of the Eighth Officio Assassinorum, as well as its Equerry. She called us Rabbits, her heralds, the hounds of her war against the things no human should know. We were first response for anything worth worrying about, hopping down the rabbit holes and running like hell to break up the tea party before anyone’s head had to come off. Before Annie and her fucked-up Wonderland arrived.

The dead and the damned are the only ones who can walk away, once she does. The only ones who can sleep again, seeing what she sees.

“…You don’t look so good.” Eve’s quiet tones invade my thoughts as I slide in next to her at our local Burger Suplex (located across the street from a particularly crappy apartment complex – ‘secondary personnel housing’ my ass). She looks like she’s seconds away from throwing up, but then, she always does when I come back from a hunt. And then we always come here.

Don’t feel like eating much – I don’t eat all that much, anyway – but I know she’ll throw a fit if I don’t eat something, especially if I look as shitty as I feel. …Even I can’t deny the food here’s good, though. Good enough to vomit back up again, worse comes to worst. Wouldn’t be the first time.

I grunt at her, hoping she’ll lay off for a change. Eve is a smart kid, but she can get pretty nosy. And she’s a dour little thing, reminds me of myself when I was that age.

That’s not good. At all.

“…You’re upset. …Everyone came back, right?” As always, her voice is completely even. …If I hadn’t passed up Ol’ Batshit’s offer before she left, Eve’d probably be my second-in-command in the Callidus Corps. Only ever saw her cry once, and she joined this shit way younger than I did. Used to think there was something wrong with her, but she’s just…tough as hell. Tougher than me, probably. Not a fighter, or a killer. Not even a psychopath. Just…tough.

“…The Prima had to step in.” That’s enough to make Eve wince. “Almost lost V. Got her arms ripped off. She was still throwing a tantrum when we dumped her off in medical.” Alright. A large Hassy and a Hurricanrana combo. Guess I can eat something.

Today's chapter will be a tad short. Explanation on why at the end.

-------------------

Odette leaned against the wall outside of her apartment building, tapping her foot in a puddle as costumed magical girls shuffled in and out of the entrance. In addition to whatever frilly, girlish affair they were assigned, each girl wore a white cape with gold trimmings over her left shoulder - the symbol and uniform of the Valkyrie squad, the very best the Seventeenth Officio had to offer. Even Odette remembered a time when she was among their rank, some four or five years previous.

She couldn't help but reminisce about the old days as she waited. How long had it been since she'd actually fought a witch? How long had it been since she'd done the damn job she'd signed up for all those years ago? There were three other fresh recruits when she had first joined up. One had moved out West, to take charge of Vancouver HQ, the other two had been among the first to go missing in the past month. As far as Odette knew, that left her as one of the two members of the Seventeenth Officio that had been around the longest. She couldn't think of anyone left that had been around prior to her, save perhaps Holly and Molly. Those two seemed to have always been members of the Officio.

It was an odd feeling, being one of the last of a generation. Before anyone came Warmaster Brie, the first warmaster of the Seventeenth and the first member of the Officio on record. Odette had always seen her as an older sister figure, which was part of why she'd taken her death the hardest of anyone. Brie had groomed her, in a way, to become the second warmaster. Some said that after her death, Odette changed. A small, imperceptible change, but a change that would nonetheless snowball into something much bigger.
>>
The one-eyed girl shook her head just as she caught the sound of heels clicking on pavement. Odette tilted her head up. Two white-shouldered guards followed in step with Therese Witton, the third warmaster of the Seventeenth. Her flowing overcoat wavered behind her, giving the impression of a king's cloak - an image all the more reinforced by her obscenely tall cap. As she approached Odette, Therese gestured toward the two guards with her chin and watched closely as they disappeared into the towering apartment complex.

Odette held out her hand, expecting the traditional greeting of Eversors. "Long time no- GHRK."

Instead, Therese threw her arms around the silver-haired girl, pulling her in tight. Odette tried her best to return the hug, but it was complicated somewhat by Therese being a full head taller than the tiny former warmaster.

"I missed you," the taller girl mumbled, holding the other girl as closely as she could.

"Ni- Nice to see you, too, Terry," Odette wheezed. "Please don't kill me."

Therese slowly released the squirming magical girl and gently patted her head. "Sorry, sorry. It's just... been a while."

"Two months by my count," Odette stated, nodding. "How's the job been?"

Therese shook her head and sighed, leaning her shoulder on the wall next to Odette. "It's not fair, really. You made it look so easy. I wasn't exactly expecting..."

"Everything."

"Pretty much," the warmaster let out another long breath as she tried to compose herself. "I've been overseas four times in the past month. The others have been helpful but it's still difficult to get used to." Therese smiled as she looked down at Odette. "How's retirement been?"

“It's been fine,” the silver-haired girl mumbled.

“And of course by that you mean it's not fine,” the warmaster replied, saying everything that the smaller girl couldn't bring herself to.

Odette's one blue eye swivelled up, glaring at the rusty-haired girl.

At least we can get back to collecting them and finally calling Pinky out.

Why can't I shake the feeling that things are only going to go pot from here on out?
>>
Are the writeups necessary to read, and who are they done by?
>>
"I'll take that as a yes, then," Therese said, smiling to herself in smug satisfaction. "You don't have to keep this up, you know. This little... self-imposed exile of yours has gone on long enough, wouldn't you say?"

"Doesn't seem like the world's giving me much choice," Odette replied.

"Seems that way," the warmaster smiled as she turned her head up to the apartment building. “What exactly happened? I've been hearing some... strange reports.”

"I, uh, got a bit mopy earlier. Drove around for a few hours," Odette's shoulders slumped for just a moment, long enough that she couldn't quite manage to disguise it as a shrug. "Came home to a smashed window and a creepy ass note."

"Can I see it?"

Odette fished around in her pocket for a few seconds before pulling out the crumpled piece of paper and holding it up to Therese.

"I see you're as careful about these things as always," the taller girl observed, gingerly taking the paper between two fingers, as if it would disintegrate with so much as a sharp breath. With a delicate touch, she unfolded it, her eyes scanning its contents. "This is... something. That's for sure."

"You're tellin' me."

Therese flipped it around, looking the paper over back to front. "What do you think it means?"

"Going line by line?" Odette plucked the sheet from Therese's hands and pursed her lips. "First part doesn't really need much explanation. Tests before me... the disappearances? I need to find who's been taking our girls?"

"Could be," the warmaster offered, shrugging. "It would be a hell of a coincidence if this didn't have anything to do with them."

Odette nodded before continuing. "'Her gracious boon'," she paused and slapped the paper against her palm as she thought. "No idea what that could mean. But 'Her' is capitalized. That's gotta mean something."

"Like a god," Therese mumbled. "Ess. Goddess. Since it's a her and all."

"This 'Blessed Lady'.”
>>
The warmaster nodded, holding her cap in place as she did. "Precisely. Next?"

"Gets weird after that," the one-eyed girl explained, scrunching her brow. "I may defeat 'the Usurper'. The fuck does that mean?"

"Me maybe?"

"Don't flatter yourself," Odette laughed, nudging the warmaster with her elbow. "Not like I want to take you down. The hat looked dumb on me anyways."

"I always wondered why you stopped wearing it..."

"Story for another day," Odette grumbled as she shook her head. "And the last bit about the singing and the animals... I don't really care to find out."

Therese nodded several times as she rubbed her chin. "I'll ask Molly if she can find anything out about this 'Blessed Lady'. Maybe Holly, too, for good measure."

"I've got Gerty and Freddy hunting leads," the silver-haired girl added, "I'll check in with them. I'm guessing fatty'll want to see me."

"A debriefing at the least," Therese smiled as she let out a few muted laughs. "He'll be happy to see how serious you're taking this. Probably expected you to take it slower, if at all."

"Thought I'd let my lackeys handle it, eh?" Odette asked as a smirk crept across her face.

"In much more pleasant terms, I think. But yes."

The former warmaster's smile drooped as she made a few shallow nods. "Seems like the assumption most would make."

The current warmaster looked down at Odette, then slowly leaned over as she rested her head on top of the shorter girl's. "Not everyone," she whispered, smiling gently, "boss."

"You're cruel," Odette muttered as she laughed to herself. "It's after midnight. Go home and get some sleep, kiddo. I'll handle things from here."

"Just a little longer," the warmaster mumbled, rubbing her cheek into the top of Odette's hair. "I order it."

"Idiot."

>>
The next day, or much later in the current one, Fredrica Volk stepped out of one of the Officio's many interrogation rooms. Another witness with nothing to say. No, not exactly nothing. Just more of the same. Little noise, the odd muffled scream here and there, a strange smell and always at night. Only one new piece of evidence, and it was nearly useless. A nervous young Vindicare had sworn she'd seen a figure bounding over the rooftops after her partner was taken. A figure carrying something shiny and metallic, something that she'd claimed was golden. Great. So they could establish that it was, in fact, SOMEONE that had taken the girls. Someone with a penchant for gaudy accessories.

Freddy shook her head and leaned her shoulder against the wall. It was always busy at midday, and that particular afternoon was no exception; girls in all assortment of costume passed back and forth, coming and going from various appointments. Occasionally one or two would stop to admire the boyish Eversor - the fact that her costume looked very much like a butler's suit had always attracted the attention of some of the girls. Not that Freddy minded one bit.

She still couldn't shake that sense of failure, though. Having so little to show for the first task the former warmaster had given her in months. Failing in general was one thing, but failing Odette was something that Freddy simply couldn't fathom. The stress had only built as she questioned each witness, turning up with nothing each time. The Eversor balled up her fists in frustration as she looked up and down the hall.

>>24974902

>>
>>24974936
Because this whole quest is about things going way off course and trying to correct them, and we just finished a huge arc about correcting things and expositing, which means it's time for shit to go bad again.
>>
And then she heard it. That distinct click-clack of footsteps that just echoed with authority. It wasn't the warmaster, oh no. Freddy sneered. She was already spoiling for a fight and even her usual fans had sense enough to give her space. But there was one individual who never seemed to be able to read the atmosphere, one whom Freddy loathed above all others. Tyler Argente. Oh how much she'd like to just tear out those damned hairclips and gouge her eyes out with them.

"Volk," the Vindicare called out, picking her way through the crowd. "I'd hoped I would catch you."

"Oh yeah?" Freddy asked, her voice laced with venom. "What for?"

"I simply wished to offer my condolences about Miss Norton, nothing more," the aide said. "I understand it has been hard on the Valkyries."

Freddy nodded, turning to lean her back against the wall. "Mostly for the younger ones, but thanks anyways," she answered. Part of her hoped the other girl would simply leave it at that. Just offer her sympathies and be on her way, but Freddy knew it was only a matter of moments before the other shoe dropped.

"Just a shame they assigned the case to Brighton," Tyler said, laughing to herself. "I spoke to her the other day and she was the same as ever."

And there it was, all the excuse Freddy needed to pick a fight. She barely even noticed the sudden weight in her hand as the switchblade dropped into her palm. Nobody insulted Odette on her watch. The black haired girl grinned, baring her teeth ever so slightly. "Yeah, I heard about that. Rumour is that you picked a fight and got into scuffle. They say she really put you in your place."

Tyler narrowed her eyes by a hair. "What exactly do you mean by that?"

"Just thought I'd give you some advice," the Eversor hissed, putting her arm around the aide's shoulders. "I wouldn't mess with Odette if I were you. Not sure if you've noticed, but she's still pretty damn popular with folk around here."

"Is that so," the aide growled back.
>>
"You've already made yourself a fair few enemies, Ty," Freddy smirked. "Don't want to make them too upset now. The Officio would be a mess without you. Think of all the pencils that would go unpushed."

"Are you threatening me, Eversor?"

Freddy only laughed. "Wouldn't dream of it. Just thought I'd give you a friendly warning," she replied. She'd already lost herself in the thrill of the moment. Her grip tightened around the Vindicare's shoulders, pulling her in tighter, and whispered. "I've heard there's been some disappearances lately. People might not think much of it if you up and vanish."

The boyish magical girl barely had time to finish the sentence before she felt something thump against her neck. In that same instant, the blade of her knife sprung out, seemingly by itself. Tyler held her pistol crossbow under Freddy's chin, while the other girl held her blade millimetres from the aide's throat. Neither of them was in any mood to hold back, and they both knew it.

"Don't think I can just let a remark like that slide, Volk," Tyler growled. "You can't hide behind Odette anymore. No one's going to come rescue you now."

"You think you're tough shit," Freddy spat. "You ain't equerry just yet, and at this rate you never WILL be."

"And I highly doubt you'd put your promotion at risk over something so trivial," the Vindicare paused, trying her best to turn and look Freddy in the eye while keeping the Eversor's blade off of her neck. "Stand. Down. Neither of us needs this."
>>
A second passed. Then another, and another after that. Finally, Freddy nodded as her switchblade retracted of its own accord. She felt the pressure on her neck fall away and dropped her arm from the aide's shoulders. As the Eversor slowly came to her senses, she couldn't help but notice the sizeable audience the show had gathered.

"You're right, you're right," Freddy laughed, backing up and holding her hands in the air. "Why beat you up as an equal when I can wait a week or two and beat you up as a superior, right?"

"Not exactly what I had in mi-"

"But!" The Eversor exclaimed, stepping back up to Tyler and leaning in. "Just remember. You may have caught her off guard and got her eye, but remember who it was that was chopped up into so many pieces that Fubey was out of the game for two days after putting her back together again. So you could at least show a little respect."

"Why you-"

"Listen," Freddy grinned, stepping off to the edge of the crowd. "It's been fun, but I've got stuff to do." She turned to leave, but tilted her head back after a thought crossed her mind. "Oh, and cute band-aid by the way. Really suits you."

Tyler simply shook her head in awe at the other girl's audacity as she disappeared into the crowd. As much as she hated to admit it, there was something to be said for the Eversor's boldness and loyalty. It was almost admirable, in a way. Still shaking her head, Tyler walked away in the opposite direction, the crowd making way for her and dissipating shortly after she made her exit.

Alright, so. I usually aim for 3000 words per chapter, but this time I went a little overboard and hit just under 4000. There were certain things I had to tie up before moving on to chapter 6, but not enough material add a whole extra chapter. So, in the interests of not totally shitting up the after-thread ambiance (as if I don't already), I've split chapter five into two halves. Really, the two are meant to be read together, but whatchagonnado. So if today's chapter seemed a bit short and incomplete, that's because there's meant to be more to it. Good news is, there's a thread tomorrow so I can post it right away.
