Want sleep? Think again! Time for VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest
Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/xtYayaca

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You first arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, and figh off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher.

You've decided that it's now time to move on to greener (or at least more profitable) pastures. You and the Demons left Albion for the besieged nation of Ustio.

Your first mission went well enough, routing a platoon of Imperial soldiers threatening the city of Valais' supply lines. Then you destroyed an Imperial superheavy artillery battery, taking pressure off the city's beleaguered defenders and giving them a chance to counterattack. You also took care of a personal mission for Qyburn, and in return, he's given you a new and powerful (if only experimental) weapon! You also captured an Imperial sniper who might consider joining your cause.

Currently, you've rendered the fuel depot at Solis inoperable, cutting off the Imperials from their primary fuel supply, which will go a long way to helping the Ustians push the Imps out.

Trying to navigate the mines after the detonations was rather hectic, to say the least. Thankfully, most of the guards had been drawn out due to Freyberg's diversionary attack, so the worst you had to deal with was panicking mine workers and fuel technicians, who you've largely convinced to follow you (as if they had any other choice). It's not long before you escort the roughly two hundred fifty rescued civilians out of the very escape tunnel you used to infiltrate Solis.

"Finally, you're back!" Julia's voice crackles over the radio. "We've been trying to reach you for hours!"

"What's going on, Julia?" You ask, still making your way up the tunnel.

"Remember those civvies we passed by on the way up here? Well, they're back."

"Shit." You breathe. "Have they tried anything?"

"No, they're keeping their distance. Don't seem like they want to attack, but they won't leave, either."

"Okay, I'm on the way." You say. "Where's Headcase?"

"He's uh, drinking coffee with the locals." Julia sighs. "They really seem to be hitting it off."

"Goddamnit." You shake your head.

"Trouble?" Sam asks.

"There always is."

Another few minutes, and you finally reach the end of the tunnel, where the rest of the rescued civilians are milling about. However, they're all in high spirits. They've just been liberated from Imperial imprisonment, after all.

"Ah, so it seems you didn't need our help after all." The same man from last time approaches you. "I'll have to thank you for rescuing my people."

Honestly I think it was fairly clear what their intentions were.

Just... we sorta had an outbreak of suspicion.

If we'd asked beforehand who the partisans were, and were told who they were, then I think we would have easily accepted help.

That was what I meant, yes.

The bit at the end, with the quotes, was me sorta trying to explain in-character.

The paranoia outbreak was in-thread. As a result, I guess it meant that something about the encounter had struck Jager as being off or something, so I tried to think what reason or excuse we might have. And "Sorry, we weren't told WHO the partisans were beforehand..." was what came to mind.

"Well, I apologize for ignoring you earlier. We couldn't be sure of your intentions, and all."

"Understandable." Penbury nods. "None of the partisan groups are particularly unified, and few are just as hostile to their own countrymen as the Imperials, or worse, actively collaborate with them. Though thankfully most of those groups are farther north."

"Wait a minute." Sam frowns. "William Penbury? That name sounds more Albionese than Ustian."

"Ah, a sharp one there." Penbury laughs. "Yes, Albion is my mother country but I consider Ustio my home now."

"What were you, a soldier?" Ramirez asks.

"Archeologist." Penbury grins at your squad's dumbfounded looks. "What can I say? I love searching for ancient Valkrur and Darcsen ruins. It's a hobby of mine."

"You dig up ruins with that rifle? Because it seems like you know how to use it." You point out.

"I can't control where ruins are located." Penbury shrugs. "Some of them are in particularly dangerous areas."

"It's nice that we're bonding and all," Isolde steps forward, a bit annoyed, "but shouldn't we be reporting back to Freyberg?"

"That's a good point." You nod and turn to Penbury. "You gonna tag along with us?"

"Some of my men haven't seen their families since the Imperials invaded a year ago. Of course they're going to follow wherever they go."

Your now significantly larger convoy then starts to move. The pace is slow, considering you don't have the necessary vehicles to move them all. Fortunately, in order to better coordinate his attacks, Freyberg has moved his headquarters closer to the front, meaning you don't actually have to travel that far. Ironically, he's set up in Sniper Town.

Perhaps that choice leading to something else coming up upon reaching that scene or some other complication.

Hence doing the other things before doing so as i doubt Freybern would expect us back so soon.
>>
>>25443291
True but Jager has been played as a professional for the most part so reporting in first makes the most sense IC for me.
>>
>>25443291
And on the flip side we could be given a mission that doesn't have 'must be done now' and talk to others in turn instead of playing round-robin 50 times.
>>
>>25443122
>>Go report to Freyberg right away.
>>
>>25443331

"Alright, you guys see to the refugees." You tell the rest of the squad. "Sam, you're with me. We'll submit our report to Freyberg."

"Mind if I tag along?" Penbury asks. "Me and Freyberg go back a ways."

"Well, I can't stop you." You shrug.

As expected of an officer, Freyberg has set up his headquarters in the largest and most opulent building in town. That's just asking for an artillery strike, you think to yourself, but since when did officers have any sort of common sense? Then again, you might be a little too hard on Freyberg. He's well intentioned, just a bit inexperienced.

"Ah, Captain Sturmfuhrer!" Freyberg looks to be in a good mood. "We could hear the explosions all the way from here! I assume the mission went well?"

"Like clockwork." You nod. "All our objectives were destroyed, and we even got a bonus in the form of two hundred fifty prisoners."

"Excellent!" Freyberg beams, and he looks over to see Penbury. "Ah, Penbury! So you really are still alive!"

"It takes more than an Imperial army to kill me." Penbury cracks a sly smile.

"Oh, so you two DO know each other!" Sam says.

"Penbury has been an incredible asset to the Ustian government." Freyberg grins. "Almost half the mountain paths and passes up here would never have been mapped if it weren't for him. We're very lucky to have his skills on our side."

"I'm sure." You nod. "My men can handle Solis for now. Without fuel, the entire Imperial front has ground to a halt. We've noticed movements have been cut by 90%."

"Shit, we're doing so well we might be out of a job." You joke.

"Indeed." Freyberg laughs.

"How's the situation with Elsa going?" You ask.

"Ah, well enough, I suppose. I've put her through the normal vetting process we implement at AIS for defectors, and she seems to meet all the guidelines. In fact, she's rather eager to get back in the field."

"Okay," You nod. You're not sure whether you're ready to have her in the squad yet, though. "Also, do you happen to know a man named William Penbury?"

"Oooooh, he's quite the legend in AIS." She pauses, possibly realizing your fears. "Oh, he wasn't an official agent or anything, but he's largely cooperated with us in the past in matters dealing with the recovery of Valkrur artifacts. Even though the legends of their power are dubious at best, it's better to keep them out of Imperial hands regardless. He largely dropped off the radar several years ago and last we heard he's living in Ustio now."

"Yeah, well, I just ran into him."

"Well that's certainly interesting news!" Elizabeth says happily.

"Okay then, one last thing. How's the overall war been going?"

"Nothing major to report, really." Elizabeth sighs. "The Federation offensive into Imperial territory has stalled, and the whole thing has turned into a stalemate. It's like EWI all over again. The Ustian front has also largely remained static due to supply shortages. So... there's a whole lot of nothing going on. I hear there's a Belkan Knight running around in Ustio, but the majority of them are up north."

What would it look like when a Federation politician is killed by a Gallian-led mercenary group? The father of the family (and initial leader) use anti-darscen sentiment as a rallying point as he plans on getting in good graces with the federation.

"Pretty devious of him." You nod.

"Yeah, apparently this Indigo Heron guy has been making it tough for the other Ustian units further east. He's extremely cautious and never lets the Ustians get a chance to trap or engage him. He's been pulling off some pretty successful rearguard actions, and if that continues, the Imps will be able to pull out of the mountains relatively unscathed."

"Meaning they'll just come back once they're resupplied, or moved to reinforce the main front." You sigh.

"Bingo." Sam nods. "Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your point of view, Freyberg knows what you did to the Red Swallow, and he's hoping you'll repeat history. We're in charge of cutting off the Imps' line of retreat."

"Wonderful."

"So yeah, we've got a couple of days for some R&R in Sniper Town before we have to move out." She says. "You have any plans on how to spend that time?"

you're referring to Jager's right?
>>
>>25445884
For the first I don't find it amusing to subject him to that, not to mention it's pretty forced.

As for the second: What the bulk of people are going on for Karla is A) being told about the past without much real reason to continue pining and B) MC used Prussia for her picture. If MC provides more scene providing any usable context, then I might change my mind but as it stands I see the Karla pursuit as being on flimsy grounds.

>>25445905

Yes, and having people ready to rip each other's throats out over fucking waifu wars is so much better than playing a character with conflicted feelings for an old lover.

You see that Alek is still a bit shaken up, probably due to that whole little ordeal with Elsa. Honestly, you're afraid you might have pushed things a bit too far.

"Hey, Alek how are you holding up?" You ask.

"Ummm, well, I'm doing fine I guess." Alek says a bit uncertainly.

"Hey, if it makes you feel any better, I'm sorry for subjecting you to that whole thing with Elsa. I honestly didn't know she was going to resort to THAT."

"No, I don't blame you or anything, sir." Alek says hurriedly. "It's just... you know... what if I don't live up to her expectations?"

We're far, far too fixated on KARLAAAAAAAA for that. That doesn't mean it won't end in murder and tears, after all she did choose duty over love once before, but an obsession is an obsession.

Hence why we must troll Alek as much as possible. Its therapeutic for Jager to see that there is love in the world that doesn't involve burning eachother's homes to the ground. And its funny.
>>
>>25445989
I doubt it as long as /tg/ keeps on trying to pair girls with Alek.

>>25446006
Writing? "You were engaged" and that she sort of feels bad is all that we know at the moment. And while it might not apply to you, I'm sure it'd apply to a chunk of the readers.

>>25446016
I'm a bit more neutral as I believe while they may be able to care for each other, I doubt they would be able to resume their relationship seeing how the whole burning down his house and possibly killing his family thing might interfere with that.

I'm seeing where you're coming from, as Jager seems to value loyalty pretty highly, but he's been betrayed and is on a quest of vengeance right now. It could really go either way.

It has less to do with Jager, though and more to do with /tg/. Honestly, I'm pretty sure that a few of the votes that push towards interacting with Sam are just people subtly taking advantage of how close the two are to try and start something there. >>
>>25446373
That's basically a running gag.
However, if we ever find outright proof, something we could use to leverage Karla into betraying the Empire, Jager probably would use it. Not necessarily to get her back, maybe just to hurt her, to throw it in her face. "You betrayed me. You burned my home and butchered my family. Out of some twisted loyalty to THAT? Whatever happened to fighting evildoers and going on exciting adventures all the time, Karla? I guess you've been dead for a long time. Your body's just now catching up."

"I-I guess you're right." Alek nods.

"Come on. If you want, we can keep the bars between you and her, just in case."

"I don't know, sir. She seems like the type that could break that shit in half." Alek cracks a weak smile.

"See, there you go! Act more like that and you'll get over that loner complex in no time!" You grin.

By this point you've already meandered your way to the dock where the Vergeltung is being kept. The two guards at the gangplank immediately let you through without any issue.

"Hey, Davos, what's going on?" You salute the ship's captain casually.

"Not much, honestly." Davos sighs. "No Imperial Navy means nothing for a submarine to do. At least Qyburn is keeping us busy with his experiments."

"Yeah, well, good luck on that." You say. "I'm headed for the brig."

You and Alek head down into the lower decks of the u-boat, where you see Elsa casually lounging in a barred cell.

"Hey, there, Captain Sturmfuhrer." Elsa casually salutes. "What brings- oh, hey there~!"

It mainly depends on the clients and local market, during certain times of the year I have nothing to do, others I'm flat out (mainly because being in Australia with a limited demand for such things ensures there are only a few large shipments and not much of a client base).

I love it most when a client signs his pistol over to me, says "I'll be out of the country for 6 months, heres 5 grand, go wild".

"Hey, you know, I think I've got an idea." Your eyes light up. "Alek, you need some more practice with the ATR, and Elsa could use some fresh air. Why don't you just float some targets out into the bay for some target practice?"

"Yeah, I think I can do that." Alek nods.

"Hey, what's this I hear about a new rifle?" Elsa blinks.

"Well, uh, Alek can give you the details on that." You say, unlocking the cell door. "By the way, why is it that snipers always have to work alone? I would've thought they'd work better in pairs, at least."

"Hell if I know." Elsa shrugs. "Most snipers are hunters like me and Alek here, so we're used to working alone. Guess nobody's gotten around to thinking about that."

"Uh huh." You say. "Anyways, Alek, keep an eye on her. She's not supposed to leave this ship, go that?"

"Got it, sir."

"Good."

Find a club that does it, find some people that do it, make sure they are friendly enough, and ask them to help you get into it.

Don't turn up to the first match you find and expect to not make a fool of yourself, there is a lot involved and its best to get some experience with some guys who shoot IPSC before trying it yourself.

It can be a little daunting, but as long as you go in, looking to be safe and have fun, you will do fine, as everyone else (except for the god-squads) is there for the same reason.

I see plenty of guys spend 2 grand on their belt and mags alone and then buy a gun thats way to high speed for them and make a fool of themselves

"Anyways, you two go have fun. I've got a few matters to discuss with Davos." You say. As both snipers leave, you are acutely aware of Elsa hanging back a bit so she can get a good look at Alek from behind. Clever girl.

Shaking your head and smiling, you return to the bridge, where you see Davos sitting in the Captain's chair on his own.

"Pretty lonely in here, isn't it?" You say, walking in.

"Ah well, I let the crew have some shore leave. We're running skeleton crew right now."

"Well hey, if we've got a day off, might as well spend it in the sunshine, right? Let's get some alcohol and cigars and just let loose."

"You know, you might be on to something there." Davos smiles. "Meet me on the conning tower."

Ten minutes later, you and Davos are leaning out on top of the Vergeltung's conning tower, a glass of whiskey in your hands, cigars in your mouths, and enjoying the sunshine and sea breeze.

"God, I've spent so much time cooped up in this u-boat that I've forgotten what the sea feels like!" Davos laughs.

Meanwhile, below you, Alek is assembling his ATR while Elsa looks on, her eyes sparkling in excitement. You're not actually sure whether it's over Alek, the rifle, or a little of both.

"Heh, kids." You grin. "You know that a few days ago, they were both trying to kill each other?"

"Well, you know what they say. Love is a flower that can bloom anywhere." Davos shrugs.

"Yeah..." You say, downing some whiskey to wash away the brief afterimage of Karla.

"You know, besides that summary of your pre-Navy life, you haven't actually told me a whole lot about yourself..." You point out.

"Well, what exactly do you want to know?"

"I don't know, have any sort of crazy tales from the sea?" You ask.

"Well..." Davos smiles wryly. "There was this one time, during my days as a smuggler. Wasn't even a captain yet, just a deckhand. We're hauling a boatload of Osean wine and Yuktobanian cigarettes and trying to use a patch of fog to slip past Navy patrols. Well, it's just our luck that we run straight into a patrol boat."

"Damn, how did you get out of that one?"

"Well, we weren't armed, but they sure as hell were. They were yelling at us to stop and prepare to be boarded, and well, since I was young and stupid, I did the first thing that came to mind."

"Which was...?"

"I threw a potato at them."

"...what." You blink.

"Yes, I threw a bloody potato at them!" Davos laughs. "It was just the nearest thing on hand. Well, in the fog, they must've thought it was a hand grenade or something, since most of them hit the deck, and a few even jumped overboard. The Captain and the rest of the crew followed suit, throwing potatoes, cans, and whatever the hell else they could get their hands on until our helmsman hit the throttle and got us out of there."

"Hah, that is a pretty interesting story." You grin and nearly jump when you hear a loud BOOM from the ATR.

"Hey, let's make this a bit more interesting." You grin. "Ten credits that Alek can beat Elsa."

"Make it twenty and you're on." Davos smiles. "That Elsa has a lot of experience."

Elsa decides to take the first shot at one of the floating targets. However, she's obviously unused to handling the gun's much larger caliber and it bucks wildly in her grip. You see a splash about two meters to the left of the target.

"Agh! Son of a bitch!" Elsa curses, rolling onto her back and nursing her shoulder.

"I warned you, the recoil was gonna get you." Alek shakes his head.

"Well, then how would you do it?"

"Here, let me show you." Alek goes prone next to Elsa and helps set the ATR up properly against her shoulder. He then puts his arms around Elsa's to make sure she's holding the weapon right. "Keep it steady like this... and fire!"

The ATR booms again, and this time the target in the water explodes into pieces.

"And that's how you shoot a .50 cal- uhhhh." It's at this point Alek realizes just how physically close he is to Elsa, and the fact that her face is as red as the front of Sir Fleisher's tank. "Oh god I'm sorry I-"

And it's at that moment Elsa flips around, pinning Alek under her body.

"Let's see how good your other gun shoots~..." She purrs.

"P-please be gentle..."

"OKAY, I think it's time I go attend to some... squad matters." You say quickly, finishing off your glass and tossing your cigar into the ocean.

"Yes, I've suddenly remembered that I have some paperwork to take care of in my office." Davos says, likewise finishing his glass and tossing away the cigar.

Well, it's a bit past midday by now. You've still got a whole evening of free time.

For your next order of business, you decide to go check in on Qyburn. You have to report to him how the buzzbomb did, after all.

Once again, Qyburn's workshop is a flurry of activity, with various assistants rushing about trying to assemble components according to Qyburn's mad instruction.

"Ah! Jager! So nice to see you!" Qyburn beams. "So, how was the maiden flight of the buzzbomb?"

I just hesitate to think what this may lead to in the future... Keep up the good work!

then we can eventually go scud hunting

>>

I think the most we could do is some kind of radio triangulation thing. This is still WWII level tech.
>>
>>25447931
.........You are aware of the falacy of that, right? A faction known for being Darscen haters with a Darscen?
>>
>>25448047
we could make up some little package to triangulate the missile onto like >>25448068

so while we wouldnt be able to stand off and guide it on, we could sneak in, plant the device, and run away
>>
>>25448086
I think Anon is trying to have the ex-GRA person evolve to like Darcsens and become Heliose's boyfriend.
>>
>>25448099

This is perfect for the next mission! Sneak in Elizabeth (maybe have Elsa and Alek provide sniper support) in Imperial disguise into the Knight's base, plant the beacon and go all NUKULAR LAUNCH DETECTED on his ass. He's a sneaky knight, so let's outsneak the fucker.
>>
>>25447946
"It was pretty impressive, but it could use a few adjustments." You say. "It was a little off target when it landed. You think there's any way to improve its accuracy?"

"Well, I could try using more precise gyroscopes and timers..." Qyburn frowns. "I have some other ideas, but they are just that. Ideas. Nowhere near practical use. Radio triangulation or some sort of beacon may make matters easier..."

"Well, whatever you can do. By the way, what are you up to now, anyways? You ask.

"Oh, I'm trying to find a way to make the buzzbombs more portable, that way we can launch them directly from the Vergeltung rather than having to rely on a specialized ground facility." Qyburn says. "Why?"

"Well..." You shrug. "I was thinking, we've been going on a bunch of missions where stealth was critical, so... uh... do you have anything that could make guns silent?"

"You know... I just might have something..." Qyburn disappears into a maze of crates.

"AHA!" Qyburn comes back, a rather large crate in his hands. "I knew this would be useful someday!"

He then cracks open the crate to reveal a rifle with an extremely thick barrel, which looked to be baffles of some sort.

"I call this the Gallian-Q. For 'quiet'. I'm not so proud as to name it after myself!" Qyburn chuckles. "Anyways, the Gallian-Q fires subsonic rounds, and the baffles built into the barrel absorb any remaining sound. In fact, the gun's action is louder than the gunshot!"

"I feel a 'but' coming on, though..."

"But," Qyburn continues, "since the rounds are subsonic, it has much shorter range and far less penetrating power than a standard rifle. Plus, I only have the one rifle here. They're rather difficult to manufacture."

"Thanks Qyburn, this will be a huge help." You grin.

I'm less interested in dispersing one mob, than in preventing it from happening again. People hear about how "Jager Sturmfuhrer one killed a man in the street for trying to hang one of his pet Darcsens!" and they won't fuck with our people ever again.
>>
>>25448686
I'm in favor of this, assuming it actually is a lynch mob and not just a case of "we're drunk... TIME TO FIGHT" or something similar.

My bet is on Ramirez decided to Crush those Ustians with his Fists, in which case its not our men that need saving.
