You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. After a great deal of work, you have become a Paladin like your Father, and now take up his duties.

You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mari, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighters, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.

Your journey continues...

Things have been picking up speed since you returned to Stone Hall. Princess Mumei of the Phoenix Kingdom has warned you that Cai Wei Zhu was in no way the only Phoenix Empire spy present in the kingdom.

Worse, when you visited Bronze Peak, on the way to visit the dragon Old One, you learned that Jeremy Sandover did facial reconstruction surgery on a few people who looks like they were from the Empire, and sold instructions on how to do the surgery themselves.

Old One, enacting his vengeance upon those who would attempt to steal from him, and sent others to defile his home, extracted Tragedy and Comedy's souls via their heads, and trapped them within his horde of Gold Ore. Souls trapped in anything other than gemstones are put though such agony, that you can't even imagine.

You returned to Bronze Peak and picked up Ava, as well as Ryan's manifesto, and are heading back to Stone Hall. You're taking Ava with you for the purpose of her talking to Adahn.
>>
Because it was requested, here's a timeline of the sped up events.

Timeline.
0 C.C. (Citadel Collapses within itself.

3 days later: Mab and the Fey Court take over First Wook

6 days later: White Tree accepts a few refugees and shuts its gates for an extended amount of time.

2 weeks after CC: Dawnchasers & Refugees arrive at River's Crossing. Cai Wei Zhu is discovered and caught.

4 weeks after CC: Dawnchasers arrive in Stone Hall

4 week 2 days: Dawnchasers talk to Old One

4 weeks 4 days CC: Dawnchasers return to Stone Hall, interrogate Adahn & Cai

3 months CC: Mer allow settlement within Coral Gate

4 months: Mari frees all but one of the souls Tragedy captured. Last soul is sane, and becomes a project for Inventor's Guild

Mage begins work with Sophie & Free Kingdom mage guild.

6 months: Isen declares Stone Hall, Bronze Peak, and Coral Gate to be a unified kingdom after finalization of the authority and membership of the Free Council. Tentative name for the new kingdom is the 'Free Kingdom.'

(cont)
>>
>>25533784
6.5 months: Granny's first 'graduates' enter into society.

Ambrose and Gregory begin forming the Schola Nitor, and begin the Accurate History project.

White Tree & HIS announces that they are forming their own 'humans only' city state. HIS does not condemn the Free Kingdom, but its obvious that her opinion of it is poor, though she states that it's not because of the Monster presence, but rather that there's been less of an active effort to convert people to His Light and move them away from Monster faiths, the Silent God, and the Elven Elders.

Paladin Toll leaves in disgust and protest to join Stone Hall Paladins.

7 months: Mab has full control over Fey Court. First Wood now semi-police state, reopens itself to other settlers.

7.5 months: Jesse-May Prosper arrives in Stone Hall to discuss Phoenix Empire situation.

9 months: Peri and Mari are able to revitalize Mari's body & partially soul trap themselves.

Mage finalizes Source Apparatus to allow Sophie and other Free Kingdom mages to use magic again.

10 months: Dawnchasers receive message from Paladin Kincaid at Purple Sands.
>>
So right now we're just about to leave Bronze Peak?
>>
>>25533835
Yes, Ada's happy to go with you to see Adahn. She's actually done well for herself, she made enough money to buy her own house and her own shop and is training two other girls to cut hair and gossip.
>>
Fuck yes lamia quest! Favorite time of the day.
>>25533835
Yeah, we're in bronze peak. I want to talk to the harpies perhaps.
>>
>>25533883
>I want to talk to the harpies perhaps.
Would you like to visit the Queen, outside in her court/nest or do you want to find Paul?
>>
>>25533935
I just recalled that the queen wanted to talk to us about the dramatae, and we bailed right out before doing that. We should probably tell her about it. So talking to queen on business basically. We'll say hello if paul's there.
>>
>>25533935
Why not both? Paul is cool as hell and it would be cool to check up on the queen.
>>
>>25533967
>cool as hell
He's kind of a dork, but he took like a million arrows to the face, so he's good in my books.

Also ever since we told him "don't ask a lady her measurements", I've been curious about how many belly segments we really did have.
>>
>>25533993
I guess we can let him count this time. It would be nice to get some more body stats on us. All we know now is 20ft head to tail tip and 800lbs.
>>
>>25534042
eh, I'll take it or leave it.

Going over this timeline, some things are kinda alarming. Like how city states are popping up left and right. Also, I don't know if we want to wait 10 months for that message.

I bet it'll be bad.
>>
>>25534051
We just got that message. It's been 10 months since cit egged up.
>>
>>25534082
oh, so that's a "modern day" and we're going to play through some bits of the "past" on the way there, like the adahn/eva thing, meeting jesse-may prosper, and whatever else echo mentioned? I got it now.

Also, since I'm remembering last thread, Ssen: Busily eat delicious meat products while everyone else tries to eat the fungus dish mage made.
>>
>HIS has no paladins at her command.
Slide_Trombone.wav
Maybe we can economics them into submission, we've never tried that before.
>>
>>25534112
We played through the past bits already in the last thread's infodump. Echo just posted a timeline because a number of us were confused in the timeskipping nature of it.
>>
>>25534082
Not yet. You will. Problem is that there's a CRAZY amount of stuff that you need to do in the Free Kingdom to stabilize it, before you can blow a month's worth of travel on some place that's on the other side of the continent and blessedly/disturbingly quiet.

Paul is in the Manor Hall working with Balles. (Who isn't a dwarf, like you guys have assumed. Always thought I marked him as human...he is kinda short though.)

"Hello Miss Lamia that is named Paladin Ssen Patrick, you have arrived with your companions who are four in number." He nods. "I am currently discovering many useful colors that are helpful in cataloging." He gestures to little pieces of colored paper. "They are not like numbers but they have purpose."
>>
>>25534161
look I think I have a working model of what's going on now, don't ruin that for me.
>>25534116
I'm concerned, because without breaking some doctrinal laws, the HIS cannot make paladins without paladins. Paladins cannot make paladins without the HIS. They both need the other to give blessings to the new recruit. We've got the makings for a millenia spanning religious schism here.
>>
>>25534173
"Oh yes, there's all sorts of colors to use when sorting. Shades between them, too- sort of like decimals, in a way. How have you two been? I left a ferocious amount of paperwork last I was here, I hope you've been able to beat it down some."
>>
>>25534173
(I see)
They are like numbers though, aren't they? Beyond the fact that they differ by what light they reflect and absorb, they are just as useful as any rune, be it number or symbol. In this context there is no real difference"
>>
>>25534173
Also, since Balles, is here...

"Balles, I seem to recall you saying you had traveled to the Phoenix Empire once. Have you ever heard of the kingfishers?"
>>
>>25534173
Didn't Balles wanted a word with us also? I seem to recall a non-urgent message or something.
>>
>>25534306
Good thinking. Also I was considering asking paul about the harpy eggs, but he is probably the harpy least likely to have had eggs, so never mind.
>>
"Oh yes, there's all sorts of colors to use when sorting. Shades between them, too- sort of like decimals, in a way. They are like numbers, in the end, aren't they? They are just as useful as any rune, be it number or symbol. In this context there is no real difference

"How have you two been? I left a ferocious amount of paperwork last I was here, I hope you've been able to beat it down some."

"There is still much work to be done. We are also experiencing trouble as there is much much less gold present now, so we much consider to change the money so that we can continue trade." Paul says.

"I'm leaning towards bronze, but there are issues with that." Balles says. "Don't worry, we'll have it settled soon. I just wanted to let you know so you could tell King Newgate that he needs to be aware of this upcoming change. Have him encourage people to spend more. Hoarded gold hurts us right now."

You nod. "Balles, I seem to recall you saying you had traveled to the Phoenix Empire once. Have you ever heard of the kingfishers?"

Balles frowns and looks up at you. "Where'd you hear THAT term?" He nods. "I've heard of them, once...supposedly they're...when one of the Sky Lords asks for something complex, he pays the Kingfisher. Then people stop asking questions." He shrugs. "That's all I know about them, and even that was hearsay at a tavern."
>>
>>25534506
I captured one of their spies in my hometown.
>>
>>25534506
"I'm asking because we've managed to capture one of the Kingfisher's operatives in River's Crossing, and if Mumei is right, we'll be hearing from him very soon. I'm just warning you that the Phoenix Empire seems to have eyes on this kingdom."
>>
>>25534506
"Oh, my fine companion Peri here caught one of them snooping around my home town. Apparently we've got phoenix empire woes now, do be sure to be slightly more paranoid.
I'll make sure to relay the gold stuff to Isen- How much of a problem is this gold thing going to be? If it's less of a problem than a dragon and a clan of orcs, then it might be solvable. "
>>
"I'm asking because we've managed to capture one of the Kingfisher's operatives in River's Crossing, and if Mumei is right, we'll be hearing from him very soon. I'm just warning you that the Phoenix Empire seems to have eyes on this kingdom." You say.

"Oh. That's...that's probably not good." He says. "Although, I suppose it depends on the Sky Lord that sent the Kingfisher."

"Do you know any?" Tricia asks.

Balles shakes his head. "You think they'd even want to be in the same room as a barbarian like me?"

"Any rumors or stuff then?" Mage asks.

"Nothing that would be helpful...I think. I mean, it was years ago, and Sky Lords tend to change quickly due to their natural predators." Balles says.

"Predators?" Lea asks.

"Other Sky Lords." Balles says.
>>
>>25534683
"And if we defeat the first Sky Lord sent against us, will there be more after the Kingdom, as if we were a trophy?"

Let's see how HONARABURR the NotJapan Empire is.
>>
>>25534683
"See, that's actually pretty useful information. These sky lords could play off of each other marvelously. I look forward to meeting one- if you were too barbarous for them, I'll cause a riot.
Speaking of, people have been calm here, yes? You might get a portion of the refugees we piled up in stone hall, and I'd hate for it to be the straw that broke the camel's back."
>>
>>25534751
I'd like to see how HONORABURR they are, but you might be mistaken.

They could be not-china. In which case, fuck honor.
>>
>>25534683
"I can only wonder why that fails to surprise me. Although you should consider yourself lucky you could even go there and come back in one piece, The spy we captured was terrified of me."
>>
>>25534784
well, that's probably because we were, er, a lamia.

Also julian was threatening her eyes.
>>
"See, that's actually pretty useful information. These sky lords could play off of each other marvelously. I look forward to meeting one- if you were too barbarous for them, I'll cause a riot.

"Although you should consider yourself lucky you could even go there and come back in one piece, The spy we captured was terrified of me." You say.

Balles nods. "They do have a thing about snakes. Every story they have about them paints them as wicked or savage or evil or a combination. Worse than any Shaper of Darkness we came up with."

"Well, that's not a new feeling." Peri says.

"So, people have been calm here, yes? You might get a portion of the refugees we piled up in Stone Hall, and I'd hate for it to be the straw that broke the camel's back." You say.

"The First Wood situation, yes?" He nods. "Julian sent a letter to me about it." He drums his fingers. "We'll need to screen them. Craftsmen, people with fungus knowledge, miners, and a few others are welcome and needed, but farmers or other occupations would be unhelpful." He nods. "That's the best I can offer."
>>
>>25534912
"I'm well aware of just what they think of snakes, death by one is guaranteed reincarnation for them. Thank you for the information on whom you can accept, I'm sure some of the refugees fit the qualifications."
>>
>>25534912
"I'm sure the farmers wouldn't be too enthusiastic about moving into a mountain either. Though now that First Wood has sort of opened up I guess we can see how many are willing to go back."
>>
>>25534912
"Of course, do what is best for Bronze Peak.

"Would there be anything here that would need attending to or perhaps it be best I leave before a fire starts somewhere..."
>>
>>25534912
"I'm some will take up that offer, but not many. Thanks for the assistance either way. We'll have to sort out some other place for them. Any more business you'd like to inform me of? This is a mostly social visit, but I do want to make sure I don't forget anything. I practically have paperwork of my own now- you should see the todo lists me and my friends have accumulated."
>>
>>25534972
Believe what we're currently playing out happens a little over 4 weeks after CC. First Wood won't open up again for months.
>>
>>25534999
>>25534972
yeah, I also believe that is true. The refugee problem will be an existant one for a while.
>>
>>25534999
Can we just use the abbreviation ACC?
>>
>>25535024
We could but I might start asking why we're talking about accuracy...
>>
>>25534986
>>25534982
yeah, say hello, ask for status report, do some pleasantries, and LEAVE. That's how this should go.

If we hang around long enough for a fire to start, we've been here too long.
>>
so, we're going to ask harpy queen about general living status next, and then skedadle to stone hall with ava in tow, right?
>>
>>25535178
Yeah sounds about right. Maybe see if we can't bring a Harpy down with as Princess Mumei wanted to speak to one.

But that could wait... Eh.
>>
>>25535239
oh, yeah, that's exactly the kind of thing we need to remember. Mumei wanted the harpies' help with her flying machine.
>>
"I'm well aware of just what they think of snakes, death by one is guaranteed reincarnation for them. Thank you for the information on whom you can accept, I'm sure some of the refugees fit the qualifications. But, I'm sure the farmers wouldn't be too enthusiastic about moving into a mountain either. Thanks for the assistance, we trust you to do what is best for Bronze Peak.

We'll have to sort out some other place for them. Any more business you'd like to inform me of? This is a mostly social visit, but I do want to make sure I don't forget anything. I practically have paperwork of my own now- you should see the todo lists me and my friends have accumulated." You say.

Mage groans.

Balles shakes his head. "No, nothing that I shouldn't have my staff do or myself." He nods. "Thank you for the offer though, probably wont be long before I take you up on it."

"Paul," Mari asks. "Is it possible to see the queen?"

Paul tilts his head to the side. "She is nesting right now, so she would be wary of visitors. Still I think she would be welcome to see you, provided that you make it clear that you don't mean to eat any of her eggs."

Damn instincts...the thought of large, juicy, yolk and maybe boneless harpy tissue-filled, eggs is something that makes part of your mouth water and stomach rumble. But you keep it together for Paul's sake.

"She's nesting again?" Balles asks. "I thought that the second clutch hatched already."

"They did. This is the third." Paul says.

"Uhh, how many are we talking here, Paul?" Balles asks warily.

"The queen has made no comment." Paul says. "The harpies of the Dark Peaks are still corrupt and insane, and our numbers are still dramatically few."

"You gotta slow down though." Paul says. "It'll end REALLY badly if you get too many harpies flying around here."

Paul nods. "You'll have to address that to the Queen."
>>
>>25535337
"Umm, Paul could take a request to your Queen.

Dear Harpy Queen, I Ssen Patrick, humbly requests a harpy volunteer to aid in Princess Mumei's flying machine.

Thank you."
>>
>>25535337
>"You gotta slow down though." Paul says. "It'll end REALLY badly if you get too many harpies flying around here."

Paul nods. "You'll have to address that to the Queen."
Gonna assume the first "Paul" is Balles and that Paul hasn't become more Dana-like since we last saw him.
>>
>>25535337
>hordes of harpies
Oh jeez we might have fudged up a little.
>paul talking to paul
I assume you mean balles.

"I guess you've given me some more things to talk to the queen about, then. One or two kids is exhausting enough, I don't envy her in a few months.
I'll be off then- do take care Balles, Paul. Things are, as always, changing."

then when you leave, pick up a big plate of eggs at a resturaunt, and THEN go see the queen.
>>
>>25535337
Ssen: make a mental note to order a big omelet the next place you get something to eat.
>>
>>25535337
"Don't worry, I'm not the type to go after someone's eggs. I'll just have a nice chat with her. see if I can assuage some issues. Good day, friends."

They had damn well better have chickens and eggs in bronze peak.
>>
>>25535499
chicken omelet, extra large?
>>
>>25535527
let's grab one after this queen business then. Hopefully none of our allies decide to notice and/or crack wise.
>>
>>25535438
Right sorry, my bad.

"I guess you've given me some more things to talk to the queen about, then. One or two kids is exhausting enough, I don't envy her in a few months.

"I'll be off then- do take care Balles, Paul. Things are, as always, changing."

You buy a few eggs from a street heggler on your way outside of the mountain, just to curb your appetite and to keep you from thinking too much about the harpy eggs. Still, part of you feels like these little things are poor substitutes.

You exit the mountain interior and make your way along the path on the outside of the mountain, shortly you arrive at the harpy nests. The sound of cheeping and little baby cries/coos/wails fills the air as you see men and women fussing over small harpy children. There has to be at least two or three to every nest.

At the center of this, is the Queen's nest. A huge thing that curves up behind her as well. She's resting in a position that's comfortable to her, but looks awkward/painful to others. You can see another clutch of 10-15 eggs being warmed beneath her.

"Paladin Serpent," She says. "Welcome, you wish audience with me? Then please, come and speak,"
>>

Nobody else here have any ideas about what to say? All i can come up with was >>25535573
>>
>>25535549
"Yes, a bit of social visit and a bit of business today it seems."

Lets start with nice stuff first, how the harpies are fairing under Bronze Peak. How she, herself, has been. If a Harpy (maybe two or three, not too many) are looking to get into world for a bit/willing to help Princess Mumei with her flying thing. Hmm... Can't think of anything else really.

Then onto the potential of too many Harpies being born at once. We need her to understand that if too many are being born too quickly it might cause chaos to Bronze Peaks ability to sustain itself. This includes the Harpies now. Right now, Bronze Peak and Stone Hall are kinda in a fragile state and pushing them too far might cause things to collapse in on itself. We just need her, hopefully, to understand and slow down. Not saying stop just keep it balance with the growth of the city.

That's my thoughts at least.
>>
>>25535549
take a coil wherever the heck you sit in harpy villages(?)
"Yes, I'd like to check in with you on a few things. I take it you're settling well? Things look like they're *ahem* progressing along quite quickly. "
"Other than to ask how you and your people are doing, I have a piece of news, a request, and a concern to relay from various sources. News first: You know the group that caused our diplomatic dinner to be stopped short a ways back? No longer a problem, the leaders are dead and their forces are, quite literally, pulling back in on themselves. They'll no longer be quite so much of a threat, for the time being.
The request is of a more uplifting note- Mumei, one of the deligates you met before, is working on a contraption, and asks for the help of a harpy or two. We'll be heading back to stone hall soon, if you've got someone who would like to visit abroad and help with the flying machine.
And the concern, well, is concerning. It's clear you're starting large families and rebuilding your population, which is fine. I'd just like to check with you if this is a temporary state of affairs- continuing at this rate forever would be more than our collective hunters could bear. I'm sure you're well aware, since you have your hands in the books, but I find it's better to be a bit rude and ask questions now than to have misunderstanding later."

that took FOREVER to write for some reason!

Agreed with following it up with Mumei status etc.

Might want to consider tackling the thing with the Dramatae next up, the array and their ultimate death. (Seriously why did none of them try stopping time? I know it wouldn't have worked against us but the same might not be said for the rest of the party.)
Collapse of Citadel and then the impending food shortages.
Then we could bring up limiting population growth somewhat until the new Kingdom agricultural base recovers.

"The request is of a more uplifting note- Mumei, one of the deligates you met before, is working on a contraption, and asks for the help of a harpy or two. We'll be heading back to stone hall soon, if you've got someone who would like to visit abroad and help with the flying machine.

"And the concern, well, is concerning.

The Harpy Queen nods. "We welcome the news of the reduction of present threats to our stability. Also, we would be happy to assist in such endeavors. The skies are our joy, and if others wish to share in it, it would be the height of bad manners to refuse."

No reason other than the reflex save of an evil elven time lich topped with a sprinkle of your standard GM fairy dust. Fortunately for us, nothing about this quest is standard.
>>
>>25536168
I doubt it. If we had been the paladin and not been Clear, Citadel might have started making Lamia people.

That said, HIS is probably going to be a problem

>>25536233
She adjusts and looks off into space for a moment, then back to you. "As or the last statement, you are not...incorrect...in your assessment. We are approaching a threshold. You have to understand that we are unused to being in an environment where the surviving births are so high. Also, it is in our nature to breed quickly, as to ensure our dominance." She nods. "However, your assertion of the shifting variables has been noted, and upon analysis, I must agree that they change priorities. This will be the last clutch for the current time."

There's some cries and squaking between the harpies and the queen for a bit. Eventually, though it settles down.

"That was not a popular decision, but it was a statement that was inarguable due to logic and future considerations." She pauses. "We may have some violators of logic, will of course result in death and smashed eggs. Hopefully, repetition of current facts will prevail and prevent that from happening further." She nods. "Anything else you wish to converse about?"

Guys... Idea.

Harpies with musketoons and firebombs.

Remember how they wanted to send us to the boonies in the phoenix empire?

Imagine how that would have went. Shit would have gone down.
>>
>>25536317
Keep in mind that Odette and such racism was not in keeping with Citadel's view of things.

Until we started actively and visibly working against what it wanted it seemed quite willing to integrate us and by extension Lamias into society.
>>
>>25536367
Unfortunately for Citadel, it wanted to integrate us into a role as mindwiped, inbred pets.

And homey don't play that.

"I think that's the most of it. Sorry for being the bearer of unpleasant news, I hope the good helps ease it some. Nothing more unless you require any assistance that I can provide.

I wonder...
Long term planning idea, a campaign into the Dark peaks to bring the corrupted harpies still there into the light!
Beacon would be most useful in this and I'm wondering if Mage could help us set up another big anti corruption pulse like before. In the process of setting it up we'd need to use netting and archers to keep harpies off the device. Maybe some crossbows and/or ballistas rigged up as net launchers.
Once their numbers are thinned out enough the harpies from Bronze Peak could assist.

The Harpy queen nods in affirmation and then goes back to her nesting. "Thank you for the information, we will be aware and we will be on watch."

You head back to the entrance stables, and then wait for Ava to arrive.

She arrives right on the top of the hour and then she arrives in a nice simple dress. Her hair is still blue, and now cut in a different style.

"Hello, Ssen, Mage, Mari, Peri, Tricia." She smiles at you all, then frowns at Mage. "YOU haven't been washing with that soap solution that I gave you!"

"Not been following your churgeons' orders? I guess you'll just have to put that on your list, huh, Mage?" You say.

Mage flips you off.

"Still wearing those yellow boots though." Peri says.

"They fit and are watertight!" Mage snaps.

"Hello Ava, it's good to see you. I hope you don't mind, we might have one more for this trip, depending on if anyone wants to make a flying machine. So, How have you been? Business is booming, I hope?"

She nods with a smile. "Yep, even hired two girls to work for me."

After a moment, a young harpy boy hands you a message. Basically, the harpies are happy to go and help Mumei...after the latest clutch has hatched and the babies get past the first few phases.

"Mage," Tricia asks. "You freak out every time a woman gives advances towards you."

"No, I freak out when older women who can have me killed with a gesture makes advances, or when Sophie starts talking about kids." He says. "Neither are my type."

"Well, what is your type?" Peri says. "She asked, knowing she would regret this."

"Firm tits, firm ass, and won't be upset if she wakes up and I'm not there in the morning." Mage says.

"That's...really shallow." Tricia says.

"I'm 19, pushing on 20. I'm ALLOWED to be shallow! Give me a few years, and I'll be able to talk to Sophie, who is YOUNGER than I am, about relationships and stuff. You know that the old tragedies end with death and the old comedies end with marriage...that's NOT an unintentional parallel!" He snaps.

"Alright, alright. Enough." Lea says. "So Mage is a selfish male pig...at least he's aware of it."

"Thank you." Mage says.

"Not a compliment." She says.

Ava laughs and then sighs. "I never had this, even when we had the whole group. I'm envious." She pauses. "So...is Adahn...okay?"

She shakes her head. "Poor boy. I do want to know him better, I'd just like a day without fighting or sex."

"See? That's a mature relationship." Mari says.

"I'm plenty mature." Mage says. "I've never been dishonest with anyone I've been with! I tell them that I'm shallow and just in it for a momentary physical release and distraction from the terrifying reality that is my life!"

"Enough!" Lea says. "Keep talking like that Mage and I'll show you a terrifying present!"

"Too late!" Mage says.

You and Ava laugh at the Dawnchasers. "Well, hopefully, meeting you again would be helpful to cheering him up."

"Here's hoping." She says. "Shall we go?"

yeah okay, I may have exaggerated a little. We're still going comically fast in our rickety-ass wagon, is the point.

Mage has never really had a normal life. That's what makes him such a mysterious roving handsome lion loner tall handsome ladykiller.
>>
"Yep, we're off. We've got a quite nice wagon, even though we still can't think of a name for it. just stay away from the, er... flaming horse. ESPECIALLY don't try to get it to eat out of your hands." You say.

"I thought it was just the Wagon." Mage says. "And once the Boat. And occasionally a confessional."

Ava shakes her head as she gets inside, carefully trying not to step on your tail. "So, what's the horse's name? Horse?"

"Lightmare." Lea says.

Ava barks out a laughter as you start down the road. "Names are not your strength, are they?"

"You have NO idea." Tricia says.

The road moves along.

"Huh." Lea says. She's taking a break from driving. Peri's on duty, and Lea's reading Ryan's manifesto. "This is actually a little insightful. I mean, after you get past the whole bit about bourgeois and proletariat...which he still mixes up. He goes on a tear about the faults of...well...pretty much every form of government possible. Even the one he supports." She clears her throat.

"Even though this puts me in the wretched role of the one who complains, but provides no solutions, to not point out the flaws is folly itself. Perhaps there are no great governments, as there can be no great leaders. All ideals shift, and all morals alter, sometimes for good, often for ill. A being without personal desire can be expected to hold fast to the ideas of law...but a being with no personal desires can never be the force of change needed to revitalize society to the better. It is not death of the body, or even the death entire physical universe that we must fear. Just decay of the spirit...and on that prevention, we may as well be trying to drain the sea with a spoon."

"Huh. Kinda sounds like Dagda's stuff." Mage says.

"Well, I suppose it's hardly an unknown philosophical issue." Lea shrugs. "Do you really think that it's possible for people to be 'better' as a race, without being forced or coerced?"

Mage shrugs.

"And as far as I can tell," A scroll is passed across the table. "That's the current situation regarding the location known as Citadel." The Kingfisher says.

"It looks like an egg." The Sky Lord says. "This was drawn correctly?"

"Yes, my lord."

"The Songs of Fate have spoken of the Egg of Gods." The Sky Lord says. "This is a sign, Kingfisher."

"The Songs of Fate say many many things, and there are many many songs." Kingfisher says. "Also, they are quite vague in verse. Those who cannot be slain by a man often die by a woman's blade, immunity to swords doesn't count arrows, and other such tales are common."

"You doubt the songs of the Great Phoenix? Do you even believe in it Kingfisher?"

"Of course, I do my Lord." The Kingfisher says. "I believe in the Great Phoenix...there's nothing else in the world I hate more. Would it be in my power, I would grasp that bird in my claws and rip its neck out."

The Sky Lord chuckled. "I could have you killed for blasphemy, or Clipped."

"Yes, my lord." The Kingfisher says. "But you won't."

"So, does the Emperor's child have any plans regarding the Egg of the Gods?"

"No, my lord." The Kingfisher sighs. "He just wishes to prove himself to his father, he thinks that conquering a land is as simple as moving your stones from one spot on the board to the other." The Kingfisher wrinkles his nose in disgust. "I despise games. The idea of rules is...ludicrous."

"Hmm, well that's fine. Can you secure this for me and my mystics?" The Sky Lord asks.

"Of course, if that is my Lord's wish. My Flock is ready." He says. "May I ask what you plan to do with the city once, you have it?"

"Solve a problem. Elegantly." The Sky Lord says with a smile. "Then, let his Perfection rule, while I sit back and watch my grandchildren's grandchildren grow in a better world."

The Kingfisher looked at Shinsotsu Kan Mon who had been kneeling next to him. She looked back at her master. Both of them had the same thought.

She's pointing to a large pile of scrap metal. It's the junk yard/inspiration lab of the Inventor's Guild.

She gawks at the lizard men walking around, and she gasps when she sees an elf. (One of the non-fey court, you're not sure if he's a native or a refugee) She tilts her head to the side in confusion when she sees the mighty statue of your indescribable ruler.

>>
"Do you want to? The only way this will work is if you walk in there on your own. I'm not going to force you." You say.

>>25539029
"I think we might actually get away without him being hanged here. We managed to get him, er, 'excused' from the leading an evil army thing, so all he really did wrong on the books was serving in that army, and stabbing you. You're alive and the army was dissolved and now our allies, so really it's just an aggrivated assault charge, and that may have had some magical control involved. So, no, he probably won't hang. Probably not even that long of a sentence. All I want you to do is maybe cheer him up a little. >>
So, I was doing some thinking. Julian's comments when we left the grove, Peace's lack of creativity, and the idea of the Caligo Clarus bringing light to dark places makes me wonder where the Dramatae got the idea for the Lightbringer stories. Did someone at some point simply rip off something that actually happens? Once in a very long while, when times are especially bad, is there ever one person or a group of people that the Light invests himself in?

Is it possible that Peace's plans might have been foiled by the real thing?

I dunno, I'm just spitballing.
>>
>>25539225
eh, something was behind the original lightbringer. It may or may not have simply been philosophy.

And something was behind us. It may or may not have been just a lightning bolt.

"Shouldn't we get in touch with your friend first?" You ask.

"Jesse-May will be working with Maxine for a while, if I know her." Peri says.

"Alright, I'm not opposed to having a conversation with her, but I'm not really sure how much we could wring out. I still don't know why she did that poison stunt. I just wonder if she'll talk to me at all considering how terrified she is of me.

"Maybe we should bring some tea. This will be less of an "interrogation" and more of a "We were quite angry last time, because you cost us our vacation days, but we're still reasonable. Do you have any more to tell us?" You say.

Peri nods. "I'll bring it. You shouldn't be anywhere near anything that she eats or drinks."

Peri and you go into the jail. Peri gets a cup of tea and walks up to the cell with Cai in it. "Hello." She says. "I brought you some tea." She takes a clear drink with the tea and then places it on the ground behind the bars and steps back. "You know Lady Paladin Ssen Patrick." She gestures you to come in.

Cai's still very very scared of you, you can tell now by her tense stance and how there's stress wrinkles in her face. But she's been trained very well, and when she isn't afraid of being slice to death by a piece of paper, she's able to look more composed.

"Hello." She says, she takes a sip of the tea. "Oranges?"

I've calmed down some, though, so I figured I'd give another go asking you why you did those things, what the message you sent was, things like that. Try to see if I can at least get you to lie about it, instead of just clamming up. I'll start with the poisoning- isn't that a bit high profile of a thing to do for someone trying to be covert?"

"So are you willing to reveal anything more of what we previously spoke of?" You ask.

She just sips her tea as she sits on her bed.

>Does this setting have any easy boardgames we can bring to the table?
Boardgames aren't the Citadel's forte, card games are the dominant form of entertainment. That and Mud pluckin'. There's a bunch in the Phoenix Empire.
>>
>>25539970
We should totally license the Invento's Guild to make "Lamia Quest, The Boardgame"!

"Now YOU can recreate the Destiny-punching action in your very own cottage! Can you out-Dawnchase the Dawnchasers' plans? Visit your local guild hall to pick up the new "Claws of the Phoenix" expansion pack!"

Playing a board game featuring our adventures with a spy that we captured would probably be in poor taste, though.

She shifts and looks uncomfortable.

"You panicked." Peri says. "I know the type, amateur young agent in the field, a high level target walks right in front of you, and you can't help but panic. Sloppy execution though, you had to know that lamias are immune to poisons." She sniffs. "Unless your trainer was an idiot."

You see her hands clench around the tea cup. Peri hit a nerve.

"Yes, we of the Fey Court have heard of the Kingflyer." She shrugs. "He's decent, I suppose. Play a little noble game here, do a little blackmail there, skilled for the basics."

"Yeah, but spies don't crush your ribcages when they lose. Lamias are known to do that."

"...I suggest a new strategy, Cai. Let the Lamia win."

I was going to have Mage be Ssen's opponent, because why not pile on another humiliation for him, but upsetting a Ghoul would probably also be a poor move.

Peri shrugs. "His work is good, not on our level of course. I mean, we infiltrated the City of Heaven, and stymied an army of over a million for years. Kingflyer is amateur hour compared to a cagey elf." She shrugs. "But, you know how it is, elves are just...well...I don't want to be THAT elf...but this time, I think it's warranted." She nods. "SHUT. Your. Filthy. Degenerate. Mouth!" Cai snarls. "You don't know the slightest thing about being a proper spy! You're nothing. >>25541989
There is enough information we've been given in character to suggest the sister is the person in question.
>>
We're a Lamia, that sorta twist in thinking comes natural to us.
>>
>>25541843
"..Who under His Light taught you Phoenician?" You ask.

"Heh, I don't." Peri says.

"But I do!" Mari says. "Fourth year in the Conclave."

"Huh. You know, I had always pegged ettins as being a cold weather kind of deal. Thank goodness I'm wrong, I'd hate to have to go way out north.

Let's not forget the spies she mentioned- think there was much truth to that? I haven't much idea how to catch them, if there is. Well, other than giving everyone in town a good whiff, which I'm going to put somewhere around plan D or F."

"Well, that's White Tree and Purple Sands. Hate to say it, but those are low priorities compared to the crap that we have to do now." Peri says.

>>25541850
"I do hope there is something we can do about that emotional control. The scary snake card isn't going to work much longer." You say.

"That's when we bring in Julian for a bit...or we wait until Jesse-May gets here." She says. "You and Lea might not want to be here when they do talk to her though."
>>
>>25542057
"We can always busy ourselves somehow. Speaking of Lea, should we check up on her and our former lightbringers?"
>>
>>25542057
"You know, I hope you've not got anything too awful in mind for her. Besides a papercut and some elaborate threats, we've not actually DONE anything to her"
>>
>>25541823
I don't think feeding them a lot of good information like that counts as counterintelligence.
>>
>>25542128
yeah but

we could be feeding counterintelligence

lets bring this up with peri/mari in a privater place
>>
>>25542057
I suppose the alternative is rather than to have her fear us, to have her become dependent on us.
>>
>>25542057
"You think the barbs were too much? I think the barbs were too much. I overacted, didn't I?"
>>
"You think the barbs were too much? I think the barbs were too much. I overacted, didn't I?" You say.

"No, actually, you did good." She says. "If you hadn't done that she wouldn't have overplayed her hand and I would have missed it."

"You know, I hope you've not got anything too awful in mind for her. Besides a papercut and some elaborate threats, we've not actually DONE anything to her." You say.

"Julian knows better, a little pain and then the fear of pain goes much much further than thumbscrews." She nods. "She'll have a few cuts and bruises, maybe, but nothing a week of rest wouldn't heal. Scars are the mark of amateurs." She nods. "Anyway, if Kingfisher does react like Mumei says he will, then we can either get a nice ransom, or more captures when they pull a rescue attempt." She shrugs. "Maybe both, either way, lot of things to do and prepare for. We need an army, and weapons for that army."

"We can always busy ourselves somehow. Speaking of Lea, should we check up on her and our former lightbringers?" You say.

Peri nods and the two of you make a turn. You get there and see Lea, Ava, and through the bars, Adahn. They're all on their knees and Lea is leading them in prayer.
>>
>>25542411
Follow along
>>
>>25542411
Silently pray with them.
>>
>>25542411
Investigate.

Somehow I have trouble believing it was that easy.
>>
>>25542411
Reminds me, how long has it been since we actively prayed?
>>
>>25542411
Watch a while. They're obviously in the middle of something.
>>
>>25542505

Seconding. Stay out of sight. The best way to assess someone is if they do not know if you are there.
>>
>>25542503
quite a while. we've been trying to do with our own hands for a time. I don't mind giving a bit of a prayer for adahn out here, just wait a bit before heading in.
>>
>>25542502
>>25542505
>>25542533

You hang back a bit.

Lea is leading a simple prayer. It's a blessing for forgiveness and clarity. Standard stuff.

It comes to an end and Lea sees you. She says something quiet to the kids and then goes to join you.

"Things are going better than I feared, but not as good as I hoped." She sighed. "Adahn's open for forgiveness and is honestly remorseful, we should get Julian or Avery down for a confession. If he wont give one to you. But he can't understand Ava's feelings. He thinks that because they had sex, that they're in love." She shakes her head. "She's being patient for him, but if he doesn't change that attitude she'll move on." She chuckles softly. "Knowing our lives, she'll probably fall for Mage, just so we can laugh at him some more. Oh...we give your brother too much grief."
>>
>>25542821
"And he still sticks with us! Although that seems like a less consensual thing that it should be..."
>>
>>25542821
"Maybe just a bit too much. It just tickles me so how he has such luck with the ladies. Think there's much I could say to improve matters here? I've never really been the expert on romance, and he's never really taken a shine to me."
>>
>>25542821
"Well I can't say much about how sex is the same as love, because it's not the same. But yeah, Uncle Julian might want to take confession for Adahn. Also, if you ever want to be a paladin, you have my full support."
>>
>>25542821
"Nah. Just enough. But this is good to hear. I'll speak or send word for Avery about taking his confession.

"So today has been fairly good. Got info from Sideways, Adahn has some progress. Some... where in the world is something going wrong right now."
>>
>>25542919
Don't bring up the Paladin thing. It's clearly a sore spot, what with how her father acted.
>>
>>25542946
honestly I can think of no better way to spite her father than to become a paladin of a maverick order
>>
>>25542919
We have already talked to her about her maybe becoming a paladin. She wasn't up for it.
>>
"And he still sticks with us! Although that seems like a less consensual thing that it should be..." You say.

Lea shrugs. "They were young, faced with death. Filled with hormones. I've seen relationships start with less, but you're right. It's not healthy...bastards warped those kids minds." She shakes her head. "Poor kid."
>>
>>25542996
>>25542946

What about being a confessor?
>>
>>25543004
"It's screwy. It wasn't until just now that I started to wonder what warped those bastards minds. And what warped whatever warped their minds? And on and on and on."
>>
>>25543004
"Well. Think it's about time for me to talk to him? He can probably overhear us going on, and that's always unpleasant."

when we get in there

"So, how are you two doing? Things aren't as bleak as they were a month or so ago, I hope?"
>>
>>25543004
"Cmon Lea! You're too young to be thinking fo them as young and filled with hormones when we're all still young and filled with hormones that are just pushed down by adrenaline!"
>>
>>25543230
to bet*
>>
"It's screwy. It wasn't until just now that I started to wonder what warped those bastards minds. And what warped whatever warped their minds? And on and on and on." You say.

"Whatever it is, you put a stop to it when you rammed Beacon into that monster's head." She nods. "Now, he at least has a chance to heal."

You sigh. "Well. Think it's about time for me to talk to him? He can probably overhear us going on, and that's always unpleasant."

She nods. "Let me take Ava, and see if he's willing, then you can go."

Lea goes to Ava. She quietly talks to Adahn, he leans against the bars and looks towards you. He nods. Lea nods, Ava touches Adahn's hand for a moment, and then they leave.

You slither over to Adahn's cell.

"Hello." Adhan says. "I'm...I'm sorry I tried to kill you."
>>
>>25543230
yeah, now that I think about it, you're right!

Unless Lea is actually way older than us and just never mentioned it.
>>
>>25543272
"Lots of people have, at least you've apologized."*smile*
>>
>>25543272
"As crazy as this might sound, I was a lot angrier at you for listening to..them. Apology accepted either way. In the eyes of His Light I absolve you."
>>
>>25543398
He apologizing not giving a confession.
Just a 'You're forgiven' will work better
>>
>>25543398
No, we ain't paladining right now
>>
>>25543272
"Hey, you're apologizing now, which is leaps and bounds more than what I've come to expect. I'm actually kind of proud.

So, have you thought about what you'll do when you get out of here? There's a lot out there to choose from."
>>
It's alright Adhan, I've already forgiven you. Afterall they had you pretty confused with all the Lightbringer stuff and then that Mask. What you need to do is to forgive yourself and realise that Ava needs time to get to know the real you.
>>
>>25543492
This is nice.
>>
>>25543492

This kid needs blunt right now.

"It's alright Adhan, I've already forgiven you.
Lots of people have tried, at least you've apologized." You smile at him. "I'm actually kind of proud. After all they had you pretty confused with all the Lightbringer stuff and then that Mask. Seeing you like this, sane and calm, is good.

"What you need to do is to forgive yourself and realize that Ava needs time to get to know the real you.

"So, have you thought about what you'll do when you get out of here? There's a lot out there to choose from."

Adhan shrugs. "I'm...I'm not sure. I don't want to be a farmer or a fisherman, or some other stuff like that." He sits on his bed and pulls his knees up to his chest. "I...I thought that she loved me. I mean...she and I...you're only supposed to do that with the person you love and marry. Right?"
>>
>>25543794
"People rarely do what they're supposed to. Even the ones who are vaguely aware of it. There's a lot more to love than sex."
>>
>>25543794
"For some it works that way. For others they simply like the physical closeness they receive from it.

"Honestly, there's many varying opinions on such things."
>>
>>25543794
"Hah, you know, that's a bit of a tricky question. Should, maybe, but it's certainly not always that way. If you want a nice counterpoint, I should introduce you to an extremely boastful friend of mine, goes by the name of "Isen". You could NEVER stop him from going after the ladies! He had scads of them, did all sorts of things with them that I don't really want to think about right now. Then, one day, he met Tara, and decided he wanted to stick with her, and not just whatever other attractive lady he could find.

Sex is one thing, but love hits you when it hits you. I even hear tell it can strike more than once, over a lifetime."
>>
>>25543794
"It's open to interpretation and I myself am very much privy to the conquests of some nobles that I'd rather not be"
>>
"For some it works that way. For others they simply like the physical closeness they receive from it.

"Honestly, there's many varying opinions on such things.

"People rarely do what they're supposed to. Even the ones who are vaguely aware of it. There's a lot more to love than sex." You say.

"Ugh, but...I don't...I don't get it!" He shakes his head. "I mean...how do you deal with all this stuff?" He sniffs. "I'm just a stupid kid, who doesn't understand anything. Aren't I?" He lets out a shuddering sigh. "I've fucked everything up. You're the only reason anything good's happened." He sniffs. "I'm a bad guy...I WANTED to be a bad guy, and I think...I think I wanted to be the Lightbringer too." He shakes his head. "Am I going to be doomed to the darkness if I don't marry Ava?"

(The Teachings are kinda open on that. They're against crazy open anyone-anytime promiscuity, but there's no 'Only between Wife and Husband' edict, just as there's nothing about homosexual relationships.)
>>
>>25543794
"Life is complicated, Adhan. That doesn't make your situation right or wrong, but as always it's unique and should be handled with that in mind."
>>
>>25543794
Also, you gotta think about your future Adahn. Let's say you get married to Ava. How are you going to support your family? Ava has her barbershop. How about you? You can't laze all day on her money.
>>
>>25544038
"Nope. The Teachings are rather open in many regards. It's how I became a paladin in the first place."
>>
>>25544038
"Oh man, of course not. That would only happen if you, for the rest of your days, tortured yourself over this Ava thing. It's the truth when I say that forgiving yourself is the most important part.

Well, unless you get declared anathema. I heard that can happen, involved vampires, nasty stuff. Stay away from anyone offering vampirism."
>>
>>25544038
"I can't say. How long your Journey will be is not in my domain. It's entirely up to each of us: reflective of our decisions and our actions in life."
>>

>>25544175
"Do you have any skills? Do you have something you want to be?"
>>
>>25544175
"You're still young. You can learn."
>>
>>25544175
Does Isen need a gopher?

I can think of no better teacher for the re-bound
>>
>>25544175
"Possibly. But for now, you'll be here, and I'll be frantically trying to handle reconstruction, Citadel, and a possible Phoenix Empire invasion all at once."
>>
>>25544175
"Like, do I have a job myself, or do I have jobs for you? I used to be a hunter, before I was a paladin. Good living, that.

As for jobs that need doing, well, there's all sorts of things that could be done for the city, clearing rubble and all that. There's also ambrose, who is trying to make a revised history of the kingdom, he could probably use a hand with the copying down of things. Barney's got his inventor's guild, that stuff fascinates me, always could use more thinkers. What kind of thing are you looking for?"
>>
Was Adahn's swordarm all citadel-magic buff or was he actually good in a scrap?

Not counting his pain tolerance if the boss fight after we shined on him was any indication.
>>
>>25544175
"Hah! The number of things that need doing is staggering, and that's ignoring whatever pet projects I'd like to get started. Though, I myself don't have the charter for starting any business or hiring anyone but more occuli. You'd have to work with one of my friends if you want to do something other than that.
>>
>>25544175
Well first off what interests you? There is still a lot of work to do repairing stone hall at the moment, and even if you don't know simply moving and clearing rubble is a good way to earn a little bit of coin. You might even just take a walk around the city and see what is being done. And if all else fails you could work for the Caligo Claurus, our scribe Ambrose could always use a hand moving books and taking down notes.
>>
"Possibly. I'll be frantically trying to handle reconstruction, Citadel, and a possible Phoenix Empire invasion all at once.

He shrugs. "I dunno. I'm just a...I dunno." He shrugs. "I was supposed to get trained or..." He sighs. "I can be a porter. That much I know, haul water, chop wood, clean floors. That's...that's about it. I don't really know what my interests are...I mean, other than being a Lightbringer."

You nod. "You could work for the Caligo Claurus, our scribe Ambrose could always use a hand moving books and taking down notes."

Adhan nods. "Okay. Heh, guess I will kinda still be a lightbringer, wont I?"
>>
>>25544433
*smile* "Yeah, you will."
>>
>>25544433
"In all the important ways."
>>
>>25544433
Heh. "Better."
>>
>>25544433
Well, you won't want to name yourself that after Ambrose tells you the real history.
>>
>>25544433
"Hah, that might actually be a bit right. Though, I know plenty of people who'd call you crazy for thinking so.

Oh, get used to that, by the way. It's not entirely false either, given the track record of our order. I'm sure ambrose would love to regale you about that. I really hope you like old books."
>>
>>25544433
That some prime golfer/assistant material.

Ambrose would probably love the help and this kid sounds like he hella loves stories.

the thought of him being under isen's tutelage is still funny though
>>
"Yeah, you will." You smile at him. "In all the important ways."

Lea walks up. "We'll talk to Avery tomorrow and arrange your release." She points at him. "This is your second chance, Adahn. Please don't waste this. Remember, we can kick your ass." She winks.

"Thanks." Adhan says. "Thank you, really."

You bid your goodbyes, and head towards the exit. Lea sighs. "There's...one more thing." She says. "Remember that boy we caught?" Lea sighs. "The one from First Stone Hall, one of the Purist Riders?" She sighs. "His time's up. We have to make a decision, or else Avery's going to put him to the axe." She shakes her head. "He still hasn't repented, or shown in his confession to be sincere in any way."
>>
>>25544433
*smile* "For in darkness is the light needed the most, so in darkness I shall stay. The oath of the Caligo Claurus. The light in the dark. We are lightbringers of a sort depending on who you ask. I am sure that you will do great work, and if you truly wish to continue being a light-bringer then when our order begins to look for recruits I shall look to you as a candidate."
>>
>>25544549
I would take him with us a-squiring to learn to be a genuine justice fightman, but I'm concerned about A. our ability to keep him from dying and B. whether or not we are a true justice fightman. I feel bad about a lot of things, most recent all our threatening and papercuttorturing a spy.
>>
>>25544625
damnit
>>
>>25544623
"I suppose we need to talk to him."
>>
>>25544623
"Then... then he's made his choice hasn't he? We can only offer our hand and forgiveness so many times before... it becomes ineffective. (sigh) We'll speak to him one last time. After this. His fate in His Light hands then."
>>
>>25544623
"You know, there's always a third option, but in this case that's life in prison, which is also terrible. If he's still nonrepentant, the only way I can think of to maybe get him to change his ways is to show him how sad both his and the lizardman's mothers are about this whole thing. And even then, if he does repent, I couldn't really let him off the hook unless said lizardpeople forgive him.

Tell me lea, is that plan crazy, or just stupid?"
>>
>>25544623
"We should find father Billings first, he can help no matter what way it goes"
>>
>>25544623
I dunno. Maybe Paladin Julian can do something, but I doubt it. Shit even his religious leader guy abandoned him,

Hmm, wait an idea. Can we use him as a bargaining chip for White Tree? Trade him for someone or for a future favour?
>>
"I suppose we need to talk to him." You say.

Lea sighs. "This place is becoming your museum of accomplishments."

You arrive at the Purist kid. He sneers at your approach. "What do YOU want?"
>>
>>25544694
Billings didn't.
>>
>>25544708
"You know it isn't what I want that is what matters here."
>>
>>25544708
"I've got no idea. That's why you're still in there, I guess."
>>
Can we please remember that not everyone can be saved. We can try so many times before it simply best left to Light at that point.

>>25544708
"I came to see if you wished to confess your sins and truly repent for them. I came to offer my hand of help once more and forgiveness by the Light.

"You've been locked in here for the past year(?). Have you given what you've done any thought at all?"
>>
>>25544708
"To say goodbye. And to say sorry that I could not reach you. May you find his Light."

>>25544708
"To offer you any last wishes and maybe a last meal, as well as put any remaining affairs you have in order."
>>
>>25544708
"I dunno. I was just curious to see what's new with you."

"So... I see you're still in prison."
>>
We never came to a conclusion on what to do with this guy.
Whatever we decide, I won't agree.
>>
>>25544875
Okay?
>>
>>25544892
I'm just saying.

I wish I had something valuable to add here, but I don't other than "I'm conflicted". Honestly, if such a thing existed I'd put him in the last-chancers, or whatever they were called. You know, the medieval folks who wielded two handed swords and were the first to go into pike formations. If they survived, they were pardoned of their death-row crime.
>>
>>25544892
Not okay.
>>25544767
I'd go with this. We can't make him want to save himself OR his soul. It's his decision.
>>
"You know it isn't what I want that is what matters here." You say.

"I came to see if you wished to confess your sins and truly repent for them. I came to offer my hand of help once more and forgiveness by the Light.

"You've been locked in here. Have you given what you've done any thought at all?"

He looks at you. "I have nothing to say to you. You think you have the right to come into my home, and tell me that I have to live with these people. That they can take whatever job they want. That I have to...just...bend over and take it!" He snaps. "And then when I said no, you people said I was wrong, and then when I fought back, as would ANY person against an invasion, you lock me up here...and now you say that I have to get down on my knees and beg forgiveness? Fuck you. I refuse to be bullied by despots like you. Have your monster race of hybrids and freaks." He turns his back on you.

"Then I am here to say goodbye. And to say sorry that I could not reach you. May you find his Light." You say.

He turns around. "What?"

Paladin Avery walks down the hall. He has two guards with him, and a hooded headsman. "Lady Paladin Patrick...has the accused changed his statement, or shown repentance that he could find His Light once more in this world?"
>>
>>25544955
Shake your head.
>>
>>25544955
"I am sorry Avery but he has not. Have you been able to notify his family so they may claim him remains?"
>>
>>25544978
This. All we can do now
>>
>>25544955
"No he has not. Can you find Father Billings so that he may read his last rights?"
>>
>>25544955
Look at him sadly.

"No, he has not. May the Light guide him on his journey. If you could find Father Billings. He should be the one to give him his last rights."
>>
>>25544955
oh man, that was fast. It really is time, isn't it?
I'm gonna just... gonna just be over here. thinking real hard about ANY other possible way to do this. that's like, a big part of being a paladin, thinking of another way. It just needs to... come to me.
>>
>>25544955
"I was hoping he would see the difference between holding racist opinions and committing crimes because of them, but he hasn't. I haven't been able to reach him."

"If the laws of the land state that his time is up, and still he refuses to even admit his crimes, then I will not hinder your carrying out his sentence."

"Last chance, kid."
>>
>>25545028
One of the hardest parts of helping people is knowing you can't help everyone. Whether its during battle, rescuing people during a disaster... or helping them see what they did was wrong.
>>
>>25545028
Not all that a paladin strikes down is a monster or a heretic. Sometimes the sheep that stray too far must be put down.
>>
>>25545047
Well said. We've tried. We've offered our hand more times than anyone else would. And yet... here we are.
>>
>>25545067
we just didn't DO it right! All the effort in the world means nothing if you don't do it right!
>>
>>25545067
>Well said. We've tried.
Like hell we did.
>>
>>25545087
And may ask what other way? We've done this dance 3 ways from Sunday at this point. We offered points to why what he did was wrong and yet he simply is stuck in his was of thinking. We can't force someone to change.

>>25545111
And I disagree with you as well.
>>
>>25545132
>And may I ask what other way?
I'm thinking!
>>
>>25545087
Not our fault the kid is caught in the vicious cycle. It would be foolish to assume many more like him will also meet the headsman's axe. However some will find redemption.
>>25545111
We did far fucking more than anyone else did.
>>
>>25545142
Admittedly he seemed surprised that he's going to his death. Maybe he's just a coward, and that'll be our way in.
>>
>>25545157
We've told he was going to face the axe if didn't repent truly. We've seen and been told shows to true will to change or repent.
>>
>>25545180
>We've told he
>We've told him
>>
Things we did:
1) We talked to him, he didn't listen.
2) Lea talked to him, he didn't listen.
3) Father Billings, a man who he trusted talked to him. He didn't listen.
4) We left him in jail for a year to change his mind.

His execution isn't rushed, this isn't an instant decision. For crimes of murder and attacking a Paladin he would have been executed that week. But we asked to give him a year and he has had it. We did everything I could think of.
>>
>>25545192
we could parade weeping mothers in here in the basest of emotional pleas, or stick him in some high-casualty rate militia. These are my only two remaining ideas.
>>

We arrested him. Then we dangled hope in front of him. Then we left him alone for a year.

Not once. Not even once did we try to steer him right, at least not with the same effort we put into killing his comrades.

We did the exact thing every other person in Stone Hall did. We wrote him off.
>>
>>25545220
but... what should we have said to steer him right?

I didn't know then. we had a year to think of what to do. I still don't know now.
>>
"No he has not. Can you find Father Billings so that he may read his last rights?" You say.

"Billings left yesterday with some of his flock to White Tree." Avery says.

"I see. Have you been able to notify his family so they may claim him remains?" You ask.

"We've been unable to locate them." Avery says. "They may have left during the destruction of First Stone Hall. We've sent out messenger birds, but no one has responded."

You nods. "Then may the Light guide him on his Journey."

Avery turns to the boy. "We have multiple people here willing to give you last rights, do you have a preference?"

"No...no. You can't DO this to me!" The boy shouts. "I'm defending my rights! I'm defending my family! No...no. It wasn't me! Please! It wasn't me!"

Avery motions for the two large men to open the cell. They go in and seize the boy. he kicks and struggles but the men don't budge. "PLEASE! Please! I'll confess! I'll confess! Don't! Don't! Please please PLEEEASEEE! I don't want to DIE!" He sobs as the men take him away. The headsman is apparently ordained, as he has a book of the Teachings and is reading Last Rights and Forgiveness.

Avery stands next to you. He sighs as he watches the boy get dragged away. "They say that they dance on the gallows, but I say that the dance is here." You both watch as the boy's legs jerk and scrabble and twitch, trying to do anything to get away, and then part of him goes limp, he passed out, and his legs still sway and jerk. "Horrifying...but a little satisfying. In a dark way...is this justice, Patrick? Or just revenge achieved by consensus?" He shakes his head. "This isn't going to be our last, is it? Now that things are changing."

You hear through a nearby window, the boy screaming and begging for His Light, his mother, and people in general as he's brought out into the courtyard.

Avery shudders. "I'm glad I'm too short to look. May His Light show mercy and end it with just one swing."
>>
>>25545231
"Amen"
Watch this execution. Like Avery said it won't be the last.
>>
>>25545231
"I hope this is the last, however I doubt it will be Avery. We did what we could."
>>
>>25545220
Did you even read the thread in which we met him? Avery told us we did more than any other paladin would. The fact that we gave him the year to repent alone was an ever greater act of mercy! He thought of us as little more than a monster as we were nothing but nice to him after arresting him. We did everything but write him off!
>>
>>25545231
"..Nobody wants to die you stupid whelp. Even the smallest most pitiful worm wants to live. Why..WHY WAS THAT SO DAMN HARD TO COMPREHEND!"
>>
>>25545231
Oh jesus christ no what have we done
We fucked it all up
>>
>>25545231
"Was there never a chance to save him? Was there no way to show him the Light? I can't really call this justice or the right thing to do... But I can't think of anyway else this was ending which is far worse..."
>>
>>25545297
don't say that. It's too late.
>>
>>25545263
Just this. Nothing more is needed or fitting for the scene.
>>
>>25545298
We cant win 100% of the time. We arn't a lightbringer. All we can do is try our best.
>>
>>25545285
You want me to go dig up the posts from not..what two or three threads before?

"That little zealot isn't worth saving!"
"We can't take the time to save every little lost cause!"

We wrote him off. We decided he wasn't worth saving.

We decided that and I won't let a single one of you rat bastards try to delude yourselves into talking otherwise.
>>
>>25545231
"Justice or not, this is a far cry from what should be. That's the reason neither of us will sleep soundly tonight. Why he won't be sleeping at all."
>>
>>25545231
Go outside. Look the kid right in the eye, and call the executioner to hold.

"Regardless of our reasons for having you executed, you'd still end up dead. Just like your own motivations for attacking and killing others is irrelevant. It's the OUTCOME that is important, not the EXCUSE. And in your case, your actions are inexcusable."

"However, three chances, says the Serpent. One to convince you rationally, one to punish you, and one to put your own crimes in perspective."

"If you've changed your mind, I don't think anyone here is over-eager to see your head roll."
>>
>>25545298
We let the boy who we gave ample chance and more attention than most in his shoe be hanged for the crimes of murdering one person, banditry, and assault of a paladin and her oculi with the intent to kill?
>>
>>25545337
downvoting, we already did this.
>>
>>25545323
okay, but can you at least try to think of something else we could have done? I fully admit, this is not right. we fucked up big. We are currently fucking up. There is some good idea I am not having to fix this situation.
>>
>>25545323
And ONCE AGAIN all of those posts are true. We tried forever, AND he doesnt deserve it at all. I regret nothing about this.
>>
>>25545323
So tell oh great one? What should we have done? Hmm? We had one that know the teachings speak with him, one that he knew, one that has seen that same hate he was throwing out talk to him. Tell me what should we have done. I never wrote him off. But I'm not going to keep putting my hand out to have it slapped back into my face.
>>
>>25545347
ditto. All we are thinking about is saving this one kid while thinking nothing of the lizardman who died, and those that he left behind.
>>
"I hope this is the last, however I doubt it will be Avery. We did what we could." You say as you watch. "Was there never a chance to save him? Was there no way to show him the Light? I can't really call this justice or the right thing to do... But I can't think of anyway else this was ending which is far worse..."

The boy is crying and sobbing and it's obvious that he's pissed himself as he's put down upon the headsman's block. They put a gag in his mouth and there are straps to keep him in place. He whimpers and goes limp, shutting his eyes tight as he lies there.

"Neither can I." Avery asks. "We need to try harder and try more with the next one." He shudders and sighs and goes over to the window. You let him stand on your tail a little so he can watch the execution.

"Amen." You say.

The headsman swings.

His Light shows mercy. One clean swipe.

"To the furnace with him, then?" Avery says, gently getting off your tail. "The water, or the pauper's grave?"
>>
>>25545347
So we set him up to be executed, watched him confront his own mortality, and capitalized on it to impress upon him the severity of what he did?

Because if we've done that, I don't recall.
>>
>>25545374
"I think the least we can do is bury him in the earth."

>>25545380
iirc we told him that in a years time he will be executed if there is no change.
>>
>>25545374
The grave would be suitable, his family were farmers, let his body return to the earth.

>>25545380
we told him he was going to be executed. He did the exact same thing then he did now. He pled, he swore to confess, he swore he was not guilty... and after we gave him that chance he proved to mean nothing of it. He did it simply to save his life. Nothing more.
>>
>>25545374
A grave so that there may be something for any who come for him to visit.
>>
>>25545395
Threatening in the distant future is different from putting his head on the block.

But it's ceased to be relevant at this point.
>>
>>25545374
"Hmmph. I don't know..I just realized. I can't even remember if I asked his name."
>>
>>25545402
It is still more than most everyone else ever got. Anything beyond what we did would be dishonoring the memory of the man he killed
>>
>>25545402
we still told him that he would die if nothing changed. He was given not only a reprieve from a trip stright to the block but a year to think, which is more than most people would get. Any more than that and we would not be doing our job as upholders of the law.
>>
>>25545374
Don't cry. We're the ones putting him to death, we don't get to cry. You gotta EARN them tears.
>>
>>25545111
>>25545220
>>25545323
To be fair, we were busy.

That aside, we really did do what we could given the circumstances.
>>
>>25545450
Actually that was just Avery as far as I'm aware. Our entire involvement was as the victim, and as the person who bought him time to try and save his soul. Avery was the one we pleaded with to not kill him straight away, and in the end, it's Avery's men who killed him.

It's not us who killed him at all.
>>
"The grave would be suitable, his family were farmers, let his body return to the earth." You say. "And there should be a marker...I just realized. I can't even remember if I asked his name."

"Maybe he shouldn't have a name." Avery says as the two of you walk to reclaim the body. "Billings actually did a good thing, he went around and found as many people as he could who couldn't or wouldn't be willing to live side by side with other species. He took them away to White Tree." He sighs. "He wasn't helping them, he was helping us...or both. I know he still felt uncomfortable and out of place.

"Anyway, back to my earlier point. Billings didn't take everyone, there are some who still live in their hate, or just refused to leave out of propriety's sake." He says. "We give this boy a name, and a grave, we give them a martyr." The pair of you enter the courtyard and look at the dead body and head. "Right now, he's just a criminal, executed after a year deliberation, who did not repent." He swallows. "We can reduce him to nothing but a mark in a book. It's the smart move, the move for peace and harmony...but by His Light, I...I do not think I could wear my mantle after doing that."
>>
>>25545426
More blood doesn't honor the dead. More blood is just more blood.
>>25545443
Telling is very different from demonstrating. Some people don't get it until you demonstrate: until they know the feeling that you're about to die. The primal fear is something that has to be experienced to be understood, and right until he died I'm convinced the kid had no concept of what it's like to be faced with your own mortality, and so of course he couldn't understand his crime.

"Whatever is most dignified. There's no reason to insult him unduly on top of everything else."

that's TWO groups of people out of their homes because of our actions! Remember that weight? Guess what you're gonna be carrying?
>>
>>25545570
>Guess what you're gonna be carrying?
Candy?
>>
>>25545549
"Neither could I. If he becomes a martyr, a rallying call... Then so be it. We'll have to face it. But I wont let this boy be some number in a book."
>>
>>25545549
"But we must Avery. Now more than ever we must wear our mantles and represent His Light. In the face of the coming challenges of our faither and our bodies and our steel we must continue to wear them."
>>
>>25545549
"Nor I. The purists want a Martyr, let them have one. We've done everything else to give them one at any rate."
>>
>>25545549
"Light above, this sucks."

"As much as it disgusts me to say this...If its a choice between satisfying our own morals and lowering the chance for mass bloodshed, we should choose the latter."
>>

coming challenges to our faith*

Fuck I can't think and my eye is irritated.
>>
>>25545549
"No. he may have had everything taken from him, but not his name too. Take it from the records, and, if it's suitable for a pauper's grave, put it on the tombstone. It doesn't have to say why he died, and those close to him are living quite far from town. He'll just be another name."
>>
>>25545578
no. it's never candy.
>>
Let's perhaps give clang to Tricia and sleep on our own tonight. We've got to think of how to do it better next time.
>>
>>25545663
How about Candi?
>>
>>25545683
Pointless. We're not going to be thinking while we're asleep, and going off on your own for a fucking pity party just makes the people who care about you worry.
>>
>>25545723
the implication is we probably won't be sleeping well. Though, you make a very valid point about worrying others, so I'll retract it.
>>
>>25545683
We did all we could in the situation. Any more time spent on him would have been less time killing Dramate. We can't save everyone and just because we have our first loss doesn't mean we should have a personal pity party instead of soldiering on and doing our fucking job
>>
"But we must Avery. Take his name from the records, and, if it's suitable for a pauper's grave, put it on the tombstone. It doesn't have to say why he died, and those close to him are living quite far from town. He'll just be another name.

"Now more than ever we must wear our mantles and represent His Light. In the face of the coming challenges of our faith, and our bodies, and our steel, we must continue to wear them.

"If the Purists want a Martyr, a rallying call...then so be it. We'll have to face it. But I wont let this boy be some number in a book." You say.

Avery nods. "Thank you, Lady Paladin. It's...it's times like these that I'm honored to be in this order." He looks at her. "I'll take care of the arrangements. He's my corpse, my responsibility."

You nod and go to leave.

"Liam." Avery says to your back. "I didn't want to tell you...but his name was Liam."

You go back to the Lighthouse. Tomorrow Adhan will begin his work as the porter here, he'll work hard, learn things, and be a better person. He's repented for his misdeeds and is trying to be a better person. You tell yourself his story over and over in your mind. YOu tell Tricia you need to sleep alone tonight. She makes a joke about clang, but you only half hear it.

Your sleep is the usual jumbled mess of images and impulses.

And you have a feeling that this is just the start of the complicated times.
>>
>>25545749
Welp, get ready for tomorrow. We have tons of work, and one night is more than enough time to have been stopped up by this.

The next thing I have planned is Isen announcing the formation of the Free Kingdom and you help him with his speech. (And possibly rename the kingdom if you don't like Free Kingdom.)

But I think that can wait for tomorrow. June 20th 4-6pm PST.

May His Light watch over you all.

I wont lie. I laughed.

see you tomorrow echo. Oh, and let's archive the thread right away this time, some joker mistagged out thread. I chortled a bit.

And then this thread happened and I am no longer chortling.
>>
Night Echo, see you tomorrow.

glad adahn could be saved after all he went through.

I do so love these.

>>
>>25545869
na, i can ask Lord Licorice to fix it later, and will do so sometime tomorrow.
>>
>>25545892
That's if he fixes it. PredQuest ended up losing a thread because someone did this type of thing.

Aren't we all happy summer is here?
>>
>>25545886
>>25545853
well, I figured now that we're moving on from feeling terrible about what we did to trying to do things less terribly, some levity was in order.
>>
>>25545845
so... why is he forming a free kingdom?

Aren't we carrying on legally in the shoes of citadel proper? Not the spirit, the nation.
>>
>>25545940
Citadel's gone, the old ways are gone, First Wood is gone, White Tree is (at this point) still VERY isolationist, no one's heard ANYTHING from Purple Sands...plus Coral Gate is getting rebuilt.

It's a new game, and a new place, and Tara, You, the Dawnchasers, and the Paladins refused to let Isen name the new kingdom after himself.

Physical violence was involved in that discussion. Also, you owe Tara one broken berry bowl.
>>
>>25546018
so basically...

We're renaming it the free kingdom because otherwise it's going to be renamed "Isenville"?
>>
>>25546032
Sounds like it.
>>
>>25546046
let's try to think up a better name than "the free kingdom" What's that even mean anyhow. Everyone knows a good kingdom has a good nonsense or symbolic name.
>>
>>25546141
Truthfully I like The Free Kingdoms... for once the people and cities are free to choose their fates... for better or worse. Plus I like simple.
>>
>>25546018
Wait..why the hell is Isen asking us at naming the kingdom. We're terrible at names.
>>
>>25546203
you know what, you have a point.

That's probably why our free kingdom will be named "Free Kingdom"
