You are once again riding through the Erstspear Forest, on your way to the Witchmarsh, where you hope the hermit witch Matoya will grant you with knowledge as to the location of the Grand Crystal of Fire and the traitorous Dragon Knight, Hellond Highwind. First, however, you will be stopping at Dorter, the trade centre of Erelund. As you sit in the back of your caravan, the monk driving, you bring up the subject of the King and his adviser and the Sage of Fire, Olbessa. Ferra looks stunned.

"W-why are you asking...? Did you think they were... strange?"

"Olbessa was a true lady," Conara interrupts. "Like a queen from some story, wasn't she? But that king... he was nothing like what one might expect."

"Well, his daughter -is- missing," chimes in Horry. Ferra spilled the beans the previous night around the campfire, and he almost hopped on a chocobo to ride north, intending to rescue the princess alone. However, he has since calmed. "But what about you, Ser Cecil? You seem to have somethin' on your mind."

But before you have time to answer, a shout comes from the front and the wagon comes to a stop.

"Bare your fangs, fellow travellers, we have company!" Shang calls back. You and Horry rush to your feet, grabbing your weapons as you glance out the back.

The floating, orange ball shaped creatures have surrounded the caravan. They have jagged mouths, some of them belching threatening embers. With two short arms and a crown of flame-like spikes crowning their head, the monsters watch you with glowing orange pits for eyes.

"Bombs...!" Ferra's fear manifesting a quiver in her high voice.

"What do we do?" asks the Onion Knight, her hand on your shoulder as she glances over. But you don't have much choice, the chocobo kweeing nervously on the spot as the creatures close in. You can see six, but you know there are more behind, where Shang now stands on the driver's seat.

Your party looks to you for orders. After all, you wear the garb of an experienced adventurer.

Can you give a short recap of the previous episodes, please? An elevator pitch, really.

>>25737716

(All of them? I can do it, but a short recap of it all will require a little time and a deal of reading, still.)
>>
>>25737730
Just the general plot and what happened last time, please.
>>
>>25737649
We should get out of the wagon, since the Bombs could end up damaging it.
We will disable 2 of the Bombs with Blind, Horry and Corana taking care of the others.
Ferra should stay behind us and be ready to heal us if something goes badly.

So far on Final Fantasy Quest:

-You are Cecil P. Mycroft III. Originally, you were an orphan taken in by the White Church. However, as you grew, you also grew discontent with the life of a would-be White Mage, your imagination captured by the stories of adventure and heroes. With a couple spell tomes, you ran off to chase some adventure of your own. Leaving your hometown, Loitha, in the verdant kingdom of Silinlund, you had some, learning a deal of swordplay and teaching yourself some Black Magic on the way.
-Your current quest began when you arrived in Corneria, capital of the kingdom at Erelund. Meeting a thief at a tavern, you took on a request at the Quest Board to help a nobleman rescue his daughter from bandits. You were joined by Horry, the Fighter, an elven ranger called Ryara and the nobleman's captain of guard, Ser Lorn Hoskeep. You and the thief, Elly of Tenclocks, got a good deal closer that night, too, ending up sharing a bed.
-When you arrived at the bandit's forest hideout and seperated from the group, Elly betrayed you, helping the bandits subdue and disarm you. However, she was clearly not happy with arrrangement and tried to save you. This cost her your life and had you fighting for yours in the middle of a murky pond. In that pond you found a crystal ball.
>>
>>25737911

-The ball was the fabled Orb of Guidance, destined to appear to show would-be heroes the way to save the world from chaos at times when the balance preserved by the Four Grand Crystals is threatened. It showed you the Dragon Knight, Ser Hellond Highwind, betraying the King of Erelund and stealing the Crystal of Fire. It also revealed that the nobleman who hired you was in fact the king and the girl you seek to rescue is none other than Princess Ellaira of Erelund.
-Ser Hoskeep sends Horry with you to Corneria to meet your fellow Warriors of Light and make for your destiny while he and Ryara seek further leads on the princess, who was taken from the forest in the midst of the betrayal. Whilst this is happening, war breaks out, as the northern empire of Velyara attacks one of the kingdoms allied to Erelund.
-You arrive at Corneria, where you meet the three other warriors of light: a fourteen year old White Mage called Ferra Fairwater, the hot tempered young Onion Knight Conara and the hardy monk, Shang of Mt. Hobusu. You have been told, by the king's advisor, Olbessa, to seek the witch Matoya who can show you the path to the crystals. Also, the King ordered that, should you be unable to defeat Hellond and rescue the Princess, you must instead kill her so that her blood does not fall into the Dragon Knight's hands. Now you are currently travelling towards the witch's home, the aptly named Witchmarsh.

(I know you asked for just a general plot, but this way I have something to post if someone else asks for a catch up in future.)

Thanks OP!

>This cost her your life and had you fighting for yours in the middle of a murky pond. In that pond you found a crystal ball.
Important detail: we could have ignored the Orb and gone to save Elly.
We didn't.
And when we came to, Elly was dead because we didn't go to save her.

Actions have consequences.

He's with us in the wagon.

this cost her life*

>>25737777

Remembering how flammable wood, cloth and feather are, you clamber out, followed by your companions, who stick close. Ferra is almost clinging to your cloak, heeding your advice. Looking around, you see three more Bombs behind, closing on Shang. Further more, behind them lurks another, bigger, its skin a charred, hard black instead of orange.

The chaos unfolds as you cast Blind at one, the black flicker slipping into its eyes and darkening them. Furiously, it bellows a carpet of fire, but it doesn't quite reach you. As you Blind a second, leaving one last charge in your mana pool, they begin to descend upon your band. One breathes fire at Horry, but he crouches low behind his shield as another flies at Conara. The girl bounces it away with her own baby Adamantoise Shell shield, however, this throws her off balance. Swiping her sword, she falls onto her butt as a lash of wind extends from her blade, scratching the Bomb on the face. This only enrages it however, and it spits a ball of condensed flame right at her.

Meanwhile, Shang has leapt from his seat, launching a ferocious dive kick at the three facing him. Blue ribbons of energy flow around his leg, catching two of the bombs. Fire erupts from them both, their orange bodies deflating as they fall to the ground.

But your attention is soon caught to the two blinded. One breathes fire all about it in a rage as the other begins to bob up and down, its tiny arms waving manically. As the bobbing speeds, it begins to grow, to swell larger and larger. You know what this means, don't you?
>>
>>25738042

(Anyone have any suggestions as to what to do/order?)
>>
>>25738153
Put the monk and Conara on the front row, hide behind them when the bomb goes off. Have Ferry heal them afterwards.
>>
>>25738153
Blizzard on the one that is growing.
>>
>>25738225
Blizzaga, preferably.
>>
>>25738241

You can check your party's spells and equipment in the link provided in the first post. Blizzaga is not available to you at this point in time..
>>
>>25738199
>>25738225

Can I get a consensus?
>>
>>25738281
Why not both?
>>
>>25738308
>fiesta.jpg
>>
>>25738281

Both. Blizzard on the growing bomb, Shang can tank a hit or two if he needs or mop up the others.
>>
>>25738308

Horry shoves his sword right through the open mouth of the Bomb bearing down on him, giving a cry of pain as blade and hand reach inside a furnace of living fire. The flames soon stop pouring, however, as the creature screeches, the point of his sword stabbing out its back and, like the two Shang dispatched, it deflates. Soon he has a droopy bag of leathery skin hanging off his weapon.

Meanwhile, Conara is thrown back with a yelp as the fireball smacks her right in the chest. She won't be able to heed your command any time soon, but Shang rushes around the caravan to face the growing Bomb. He takes a hard, planted stance, ready to take the blast. It is then that you cast Blizzard over his shoulder, right at the face of the swelling monster.

Ice crystals hit its face, spreading like a mask and piercing its skin. For a moment it pumps up further, before it sags and falls in a heap of empty skin. Shang looks back at you and scowls, seemingly wondering why he bothered listening if you were just going to kill the damn thing yourself. But his expression twists into one of shock. You soon learn why as something as hard as a giant rock slams into you from the side. Pain springs from your arm and ribs as you are sent tumbling along the ground. When you look up, you see the Grenade, its twisted grin sparking with flames as it rears to charge again. Before Shang can make to save you, two more Bombs surround him, scratching and breathing flames at him. Another is floating above Conara, breathing a heavy jet of fire right down ontop of her whilst Horry moves to pull the dead Bomb off his sword as soon as possible.

<continued>
>>
>>25738281
Also ya might want to setup like a twitter or something to assemble a reliable quester base.
>>
>>25738435

It is the White Mage, Ferra, who jumps between you and the Grenade.

"Repel!" she cries out, a pulse of light flashing from the end of her rod. The great, black Bomb is thrown back. But its eyes only narrow into furious, flaming coals before it charges again. However, this time, in opens its maw wide, making to close its long, black fangs down on the girl.
>>
>>25738458
Push her down and meet the beast with your weapon.
>>
>>25738458

Push/pull Ferra out of the way, draw our sword (preferably while doing the first action) and prepare to duel the Grenade. Draw its attention by shouting/insulting it.

So how come we don't use the steel longsword we have in our inventory?

>>25738458

If not simple >>25738499
>>
>>25738535
You'd think that Conara kinda needs her sword?
>>
>>25738569
We can give it back, and the "won't be able to heed your command" leads me to believe she is out cold.
>>
>>25738524

You've only been using it to train so far, the blade still heavy and unwieldy to you. You're equipped with the weapon you're best suited to, the longsword inside the caravan.

>>25738535

Ferra and the Grenade stand between you and the Onion Knight who is currently under a struggle of her own, kicking and swiping at the Bomb belching a flow of fire down at her.

>>25738499

You fight the pain, getting to your feet and pulling the frozen mage away. Your balance only gives you time to clash your blade against the beasts teeth. Meanwhile, Shang unleashes a powerful blow at one of the smaller beasts, the same he dented Horry's shield with. It does a lot more than dent this time, resulting in a dead Bomb flying away as he smacks at the second with his nunchaku whilst it bites and claws. As soon as Horry pulls his blade free, he is soon attacked by yet another. And now the second blinded Bomb, inspired by his comrade, is beginning to swell and growl itself. All this whilst you stand face to face with Grenade, who rears to breathe fire right at you.

(Sorry for the wait, all. Got a black Labrador puppy who doesn't realise how big he's grown and likes to tackle. Random encounters all over this business.)
>>
>>25738665

Small correction: you haven't trained with the longsword at all, making it even harder to use.
>>
>>25738665
Puppies are awwright, you're forgiven OP.
>>
>>25738665
Ehh, Conara is fine she has that fire resist cloak. Cast Blizzara on our opponent, we should still have 1 mana left?
>>
>>25738726

You have no Blizzara or no mana, having cast Blind twice and Blizzard once.
>>
>>25738735
Stay on the defensive the grenade and wait for an opening.
>>
>>25738762

You steel yourself, holding your sword in a guard across your face and upper body. This does nothing to stop the Grenade as it breathes a gust of flames upon you. You manage to guard your face from being seared off, but the flames hit your body and the heat is soon unbearable. You can smell your leather searing, your cape and hair catching afire.

Then it stops. The pain of the flames still on your body is no less pleasant, but the Grenade from behind, ice crackling and stabbing all over its spines. Behind it stands Conara, her face twisted in a fierce rage. Where she once lay now only remains the body of a Bomb, cleft in two. Her scale cloak glows a bright orange but she is otherwise unharmed.

And soon, so are you, as Ferra places a palm to your back and the cooling, yet also itchy, sensation of Cure rushes over you.

<continued>
>>
>>25738933

The second blind Bomb explodes. Heat gushes from inside, fire licking at all of you. But luckily, it's too far to cause any real damage to your party, instead causing the leaves and branches around its now tattered corpse to burn up.

Horry and Shang are back to back, the Fighter having slain one Bomb as two circle about them. Meanwhile, you and Ferra stand to the back of the Grenade as it turns instead to Conara, rearing to charge right at her much, much smaller form.

(Sorry again for the wait. Was waiting for another suggestion or two that didn't come. How long should I wait before realising that the only courses of action offered are the ones I should take?)
>>
>>25738968

>Response
Eh, maybe like 10 minutes or so. I was waiting for my post to get in, but kept getting connection errors. No biggie, though.

>Action

Could try to attempt to touch the grenade and Omose any MP it has, then slash it.
>>
>>25738968
Stab it in the back, the grenade gets as much for turning it to us.
Also that is up to you m8.
>>
>>25739014

You haven't mastered Osmose, yet. You've only been learning it for three days. It takes longer than that even for the lowest level spells.
>>
>>25739035

Oh. Well, we could attempt to slash it from behind, then.

Perhaps have Ferra back up from us a bit so she doesn't get caught in any flames that the Grenade will attempt to breathe.
>>
>>25739014
Osmose sounds like a good plan. Osmose then blizzard, though.
>>
>>25738968
Basically fight scenes aren't particularly interesting to make choices, you can just assume we do the sensible thing until something exceptional happens.
>>
>>25738968
There's only a few smart options here, though.
>>
>>25739091

(Do the rest of you share this opinion? I had planned on this quest being as heavy on fights as it is on everything. After all, it's Final Fantasy Quest. And the choices will matter.)

>>25739061
>>25739020

After warning Ferra to stand further back, you lunge at the Grenade, putting all your strength into a stab between the spines of its back. You sword breaks through the hard shell, but stops you before your blade is even 1/3rd of the way in. The Grenade lets out a furious screech and begins to shake violently, its undergrown arms trying to reach back to grab and scratch at you, but to no avail. At this point, the Onion Knight leaps into action, aiming a hard, horizontal slash right down the body of the black Bomb. Its hardened form stops the skinny blade easily, but the gust of sharp wind slices right down through it. It's not too deep, but it's enough, deep crimson flames spilling out as it slowly weakens and drifts downwards. Soon you and the saggy Grenade skin are on the ground, just as Shang and Horry attack the last remaining Bomb from both sides, slashing and crushing the poor thing until it's no more.

Soon, the path is clear, but for two chocobo that have nervously defecated on it and several Bomb corpses.

Then you feel the glow of more heat on your skin. Turning, you come face to face with a low, but rapidly spreading fire as it grows in the direction of the trees.
>>
>>25739198
Grinding isn't fun. I liked the fight where we got Elly killed, as that had some actual consequence to the plot. Unless this fight will actually change something meaningful, drop a macguffin, or progress character development, there's not much for us to do but to fight until bad things die.
>>
>>25739233
We can die in a fight, as could any of our companions. You shouldn't assume that we could safely rush through a fight without consequences.

>>25739198
Crap, better try to stamp out the fire using the Bomb skins as fire blankets.
>>
>>25739198

It's your call, although orchestrating every single battle can possibly slow down the pace of the story.

>Fire

Ask if anyone has a shovel that they can use to shovel soil suffocate the fire, or any water or something that they can use to similar effect.

If not, then it's time to hoof it out of there.
>>
>>25739198
I do not. If each fight has the potential to be a TPK or at least majorly debilitating if we're stupid, then bring them on.
>>
>>25739266
Yeah, but if the fights don't have any purpose BUT to be dangerous, the game turns into Tomb of Horrors. I'm just not a fan of dungeons without loot (though hopefully we WILL be getting some loot from the slain monsters as in most RPGs.)

>>25739198
Oh shit okay a forest fire is the sort of thing that would be pretty plot-changing, yeah. Stamp that shit out!
>>
>>25739303
We're getting Job xp, being forced to budget consumables, and make decisions that will affect the plot and the difficulty of further battles down the road.
I like working for my victories and making the choices actually matter.
>>
>>25739275

Ferra rushes to Horry's side once she sees the charred state of his arm and his fixed grimace. Before long, it's healed, as Conara and Shang have turned to watch the fire, naught but surprise on their expressions. Both calls for a shovel and water bring you nothing but blank looks. You have nothing in your caravan except for what's in your inventory, food and chocobo feed. Conara sprouts up with an idea and hops into the caravan. When she jumps back out, she has a wineskin in her hand, which she proceeds to uncork and empty all over the flames.

"Hey, stop that!" Shang barks, grabbing the girl by her still faintly glowing scales and lifts her away. However, it's too late, the skin emptied and the flames no less quelled.

>>25739266
You grab one of the saggy Bomb skins, tough and springy to your touch, and begin to smack at the flames. As you do, something falls to your feet. And your attempt only serves to blow the fire further along the leaves and sticks in the dirt, the fire quickly growing, crawling up to lick at the bark of trees on one side of the path.
>>
>>25739198
Nah, I like fight scenes as long as there are plenty of options available.
>>
>>25739389
>and begin to smack at the flames.
Uh, that's not how you use a fire blanket.
You're supposed to put it over the fire and stamp down on it to deprive the burning material of oxygen.

If we've got no shovels, then take Horry or Conara's shield and use it as a shovel to try to put some of the fire out.

And check what fell at our feet.
>>
>>25739456

(Sorry, I neglected to notice the fire blankets part... well, it wouldn't have worked, still.)
>>
>>25739456

Seconding this.
>>
>>25739456

You grab Conara's shield from her arm, unstrapping to start shovelling at the fire, lifting and overturning in the dirt. Horry rushes to join you, doing the same with his own shield. You are doing well at quelling some embers, but now the fire is reaching plantlife and spreading amongst the undergrowth, a carpet of fire spreading through the forest. On your knees, it's not too hard to steal a glance at what fell out of the Bomb. It's a little hardened rock, dark red and glittering in parts, with little holes that look naturally formed. Now that your knee is touching it, you can feel a faint warmth gently radiating from it. You know what this is. A Bomb fragment. They sell at traveller's shops for a worthy penny, your gil earned from these affording you the trip you made to Corneria.
>>
>>25739542
Pocket that Bomb fragment.
Hey, what can Sheng's Fish stance do? Create water?
>>
>>25739542

Unless one of the other party members has some method of spreading massive amounts of water/frost around the area, I think it might be time to get out of there. Hop on to the caravan/wagon and drive away from the forest as fast as we can.

If the bombskins are elastic and tough, then they might come in handy later if we want to make a balloon or some sort of stretchy band. Bring them along when/if we run.
>>
>>25739385
Yeah, but look at this fight for example, we didn't do much else besides 'meet the enemy with your weapon', several times in a row. Not very interesting since there's nothing at stake - the characters perform in the battle as they will without our input, really. It would've been more meaningful if we had to make a choice between, say, protecting ourselves or our ally.
>>
>>25739609

You now have Bomb Fragment. As far as you remember, any Bomb that doesn't begin to self-destruct will have a Fragment in it. As for Shang's Fish technique, you remember him explaining that it heals him if he has the time to meditate and focus enough to use it.

>>25739620

Your party has no such ability or item, thanks to Conara using the last of her Frost Fangs to save you and your own expenditure of your mana. Bomb skins degrade all too quickly to have any use made of them. You and the party rush to pocket the remaining Fragments and hop in the caravan. Horry jumps onto the driver's seat and the chocobo are all too quick to start high-tailing it out of there.

<continued>
>>
>>25739706

Before too long, the fire is behind you, becoming nothing more than a glow in the distance, between the trees and, after a while longer, nothing at all. Ferra chews her lip, still watching behind you, perhaps afraid that the flames will catch up with you. Meanwhile, Conara brags to Shang about how she saved your skin and killed a Bomb all by herself. All he says in return, however, is an assurance that she'll be replacing the wine she wasted.

You'll be at Calim in a day. Would you like to stop there or keep travelling on to Dorter?
>>
>>25739769

Stop at Calim. The party could use a rest after that battle.

You guys think we should sell the bomb cores at Calim or hold off until Dorter?
>>
>>25739804
Research them and find an alchemist to make them very useful.
Or sell em in the city where we think they will go for more.
>>
>>25739804
>>25739895

You decide to stop off at Calim, another night's food for your party and chocobo (minus Shang) costing you 30 gil. The town is still lively as the night begins to stretch overhead, dark blue filling the sky as mothers not-so-gently urge the more rebellious children to get inside. The tavern is full of farmers after a day's hard work and the Traveller's Shop is still open, in case you'd like to check how much selling a Bomb Fragment would get you. You can stop at the inn, as well, if you like. Two rooms (which Ferra insists upon, if you do stay) and a place in the stables for the chocobo would cost you 350 gil. Do you want to stay there? Either way, your cart's getting a few looks from the villagers. You realise there are few young men here any more, and that the roads through are much more trampled than when you last came.
>>
>>25740063
Let's get those rooms, and see what those Bomb Fragments will go for.
>>
>>25740124

The Bomb Fragments sell for 180 gil each at the Traveller's Shop, the shopkeep informing you that he'll most likely sell them on to alchemists or maybe even find out how to transmute them into Fire Fangs. You can decide whether or not you'd like to sell them or not on the morrow, buying the food you need for the journey. For now, your party is dire need of feed, a bath and bed. Ferra informs you that perhaps the bath is the most readily needed measure. You had wondered why she had recently taken to covering her lower face with one of her robe sleeves. After leaving your chocobo to the stable boy and checking in with the same bellied, bearded man who was at the desk last time greets you warmly, as though you were an old friend. Two girls rush out to fill your baths for your party. Before long, you, Horry and Shang are ushered into the three tin tubs, washing away the travel of the past four days.

As he sinks deep into the tub and gives a sigh, Shang glances over to you, the water beating off his lean, tightly muscled body

"So, Red Magician. You never got to finish your conversation from earlier. You spoke of the king and his woman, yes? I trust women little, it's true, and men who call themselves 'king', too. But what is it that has caught your imagination?"
>>
>>25740272

(Is anyone still playing or is it time to stop the quest for tonight?)
>>
>>25740272

Aside from the stuff that's already been said about his less than regal manner, he seemed a bit... resigned to his fate, I suppose? He instructed us to kill all of these undoubtedly dangerous people without him or Olbessa giving us a briefing of any sort on their abilities, or what they could possibly be up to, or any forces that they are currently believed to command.

He didn't command us to immediately rescue his daughter either, but rather fire Fire Crystal first. Which is strange, because the way he said it, it seemed that the princess was paramount to Ser Highwind's triumph or our failure. Call it paranoia, but it seems that there's a lot of information that they didn't give us when we're allegedly these legendary heroes who are going to save everything. You'd also think that they'd immediately equip us with their best arms and armor as well as training to maximize our chances of success, rather than just giving us a one-time stipend.
>>
>>25740387

It might just be a slow day. Sundays and all that.

>>25740455

"You saw them, did you not?" asks Shang. "The Dragon Knight's a mighty warrior who rides a wyvern, with a fire dancer and a Geomancer. But yes, you're right... they have been somewhat lacking in their assistance."

"There -is- a war on," stresses Horry, looking a little displeased at all this talk. "You know, some might think this is near treasonous talk."

At that point, you remember that Horry is an Erelund native, unlike you and Shang.

"As for the matter with the Princess," the monk shrugs, dumping a bucket of water over his head before passing it to you. "She's the heir to the throne and key to the kingdom. Perhaps her father fears that she will sympathise with the Dragon Knight. Or worse, the next heir to the the Erelesh crown might be a Highwind. Such a thing has happened in Wujia before. A princess kidnapped, wedded, bedded and with child can cause much trouble for whomever presumes to be ruler at the time."

He grins at the thought, but Horry pales, sinking further into his tub until he is but a head of red hair floating in the water.

"Your friend has not the stomach to know the truth of the world," the monk snorts, reaching down the side of the tub and retrieving his wineskin. Taking a swig, he offers it to you. "But what you speak of... do you think the king and Olbessa mean us to fail?"

Accept the wineskin.

"I wouldn't say that. Obviously, there's some powerful stuff involved with the whole Warriors of Light stuff... and there's a lot to be said from gaining experience from all of these journeys firsthand. But perhaps their priorities are focused elsewhere?"

"This village has very little men in their prime milling about. They've probably been recruited by the army, which is probably being marched somewhere if the roads are of any indication. Me and Horry talked with a few soldiers that were attached to rather sizeable one. These armies are probably going to where the real action is. Maybe they're a bit skeptical of the legends of old, and as such we're not so much the hope of the entire world right now so much as a back-up plan. At least, until we prove ourselves worthy of the title."

"But still, I can't help but think that they're keeping us in the dark for some reason. I find that employers that keep information on a 'need-to-know' basis often have reason to keep their employees from finding out about such things."

It's not wine, that's for sure. It burns the throat and, you can imagine, does a much, much better job of getting one drunk. Yet Shang, for as often as he sips, rarely seems less than intense in his focus and clarity. By the time you answer, Horry has risen, pushing his red bangs from his eyes.

"They do say that a Warrior of Light's beginning is always humble. Odin wasn't a king when he started and Jeles was just a bard who happened to discover the song of the nymphs."

Then as you speak of priorities, Horry nods enthusiastically.

"These high-blooded people don't trust us, for all their honeyed words," spits Shang, before standing. "But come, we have food to eat."
