Welcome to Dune Quest. This quest will be set within the Dune Universe. If you are familiar with the Dune Universe that is great: we'll be starting a millennium or two before the events of the first book and the prequels never happened, and while I'm going to do a bit of an info dump for people who don't know the series you should skim through to see how I'm interpreting specific things. If you aren't familiar with Dune then prepare for a very necessary info dump, but keep a few things in mind.

>1. The Spice must flow.
>2. Wheels within wheels within wheels: It's never simple. Never take what NPCs say at face value, and always assume someone is trying to deceive you in some capacity.
>3. If tldr is a problem this probably isn't the quest for you. I write slowly and I write a lot.
>4. When the plot moves, it moves. When it doesn't move it's because there is important information that needs to be absorbed. I'll try to keep it brief, but I can't keep it simple.
>5. Subtlety is a good idea. There are plenty of hot blooded characters in the Dune Universe, but they round this out by being clever.
>6. The Spice must flow.
>7. Fear is the mind killer. Have balls.
>8. The Spice must flow. For real.

With that said, prepare for a huge info dump.

>The Padishah Empire

Humanity is ruled over by an Emperor who sits on the Golden Lion Throne. For millennia the rulers of House Corrino have inherited the title of Padishah Emperor, the Shah of Shahs. The Emperor, in theory, commands all of humanity as subjects and determines, with input from the Landsraad, the laws that mankind must follow. In practice however the Emperor is very powerful but always works to keep rival Major Houses from trying to usurp his power, and is answerable to powerful monopolies like the Spacing Guild or the influence of deeply entrenched groups like the Bene Gesserit and the Bene Tleilaxu, and is always under pressure by the Landsraad. The Emperor's Legions of Sardaukar are only matched in strength by the combined might of all of the Landsraad's military power, and so the Landsraad keeps an eye on the Emperor so he doesn't pick them off one by one while the Emperor works to keep the Landsraad divided so that they may not challenge him. The planet Kaitain, under the rule of House Corrino, is the capital of the Imperium.

>The Landsraad and CHOAM

The Landsraad is made up of Houses both Major and Minor, the Landsraad provides a forum for matters of trade and politics, and oversees Kanly feuds as well as deciding if a House should be banished or not. They are ruled by a High Council on which the Emperor has a voice. Major Houses have the greatest voting power, Minor Houses have a lesser vote, and the Emperor's House has a powerful vote as well. However the Emperor is answerable to the High Council on certain issues of law, such as conventions on trade and warfare. The Spacing Guild allows Landsraad business to be conducted at no cost.

cont'd
>>
CHOAM, or the Combine Honnete Ober Advancer Mercantiles, is essentially the OPEC of the far future. It is essentially a major corporation that churns out profits and dividends for shareholders and directors, and it is run by the Landsraad and the Emperor. It controls inter-stellar trade, and most importantly trade involving spice melange. Directorships can be given out and revoked by the Emperor or Landsraad, though technically the Emperor has the final say. The Spacing Guild and the Bene Gesserit are silent partners in CHOAM. Many Houses depend upon a share of CHOAM profits to survive, and the bulk of CHOAM profits come from the Spice trade.

>Spice

It must flow.

Technically called Spice Melange, it is found only on one place, and that place is the planet Arrakis. It has a number of properties, and almost singularly supports the possibility of interstellar empire. It's attributes are as follows:

-Expanded sensory perception: Amongst other abilities it grants limited prescience to certain individuals, including the Bene Gesserit but most especially Guild Navigators. Guild Navigators use this prescience to chart paths through fold space in order to avoid crashing Spacing Guild ships into asteroids, nebulas, stars, or planets, and thus Spice is key to travel throughout the empire. Without it goods and people could not move through the Imperium and communication would be lost.
-Health benefits: Life expectancy triples. Health in general is fortified, and one is less susceptible to sickness and injury.
-Exceedingly Addictive: The more you take the more you need. If you don't meet your need you will die. Period.
-Physical Changes: The eyes become blue. Blue on blue eyes, with the eye color changing first before the whites of the eye become blue themselves. This is especially notable amongst natives of Arrakis.

cont'd
>>
>The Spacing Guild

They have a monopoly on interstellar transportation. If you want to go somewhere and not take decades to centuries to get there you need these people. If you want to send goods, people, or information through the Imperium, you need these people. Guild families are a powerful merchant class, and Guild Navigators are powerful prescients upon whom the process hinges. Guild Navigators exist in giant tanks pumped full of spice gas, and they would die outside of their spice tanks. Their fingers and toes are webbed, and their blue eyes are almost alien.

>The Bene Gesserit, the Ixians, and the Bene Tleilaxu

The Bene Gesserit are a sisterhood of unknown origin. They are deadly combatants, exhibit all manner of strange powers, and train the daughters of Landsraad nobles as well as providing them with wives and concubines. They are known to be engaging in a massive breeding project in order to create some sort of superman. They have influence in every court and are always dangerous.

The Ixians come from a planet on the outer edges of the Imperium. They do not follow the prohibitions against Thinking Machines established after the Butlerian Jihad, and they utilize all manner of technologies that, while useful, cannot be widely produced outside of their planet due to restrictions on production. They also train Mentats, human beings who can utilize their brains as though they were advanced computer systems. They are responsible for most technological innovations in this day and age.

The Bene Tleilaxu are another fringe society. They specialize in the growth of clones, shape shifting face dancers, resurrected gholas, organ and spare part growth, twisted mentats, specially conditioned slaves, genetically modified species, and any number of genetically crafted beings they might dabble in for power and profit. They are ruled over by Tleilaxu Masters who have Face Dancer slaves. Their women are never seen.

>>
>Religion, Technology, and War

The primary religion of the Imperium is Orange Catholicism, a comfortable syncretic faith asserted by the interfaith community at the conclusion of the Butlerian Jihad. It was widely rejected by most traditional faiths as being exceedingly heretical, but promoted by the mostly agnostic ruling class as a convenient puppet show in order to keep the masses in line. Other religions remain, most especially elements of Islam, some Christianity here and there, and your occasional Hindu. The Jews are thought to exist but have been in hiding for a very long time.

Technology is built with the caveat (outside of Ix) that it cannot mimic the mind of a human in any way. Computers are banned, Thinking Machines are banned, and anything that doesn't require the direct control of a human being is suspect. Millennia ago humanity fought a war against Thinking Machines for their independence after spending centuries wallowing in laziness caused by having those machines do all of their work and thinking for them. Only the Ixians regularly get away with inventions and goods that violate the Thinking Machine prohibition in this age.

Combat is largely dictated by the existence of the personal shield generator. The personal shield is a shimmering field of energy that stops anything with too great a relativistic speed from traveling through it and hitting the person wearing it. This means bullets are largely ineffective save against unprepared or unshielded enemies, and only slow moving and thus avoidable darts are employed regularly as projectile weapons. What is exceedingly common is the use of bladed weapons of all types, from knives to swords, in order to reach past an opponent's personal shields. Most fighting takes place face to face, blade to blade.

You are the young heir to a Major House. Just as you have come of age your father has been assassinated.

But first, let's talk about your House.

>What kind of homeworld do your people hail from? What sort of climate does it have? What sort of people live there? Ethnicity? Religious preferences?
>>

Yeah, no, sign me the fuck up. This sounds sweet. Any relation to the other Dune Quest?

>>25781511
Zensunni for victory!
(is that an option? Or is it more of an individual thing?)
>>
>>25781510

If you wish to have that training.

>>25781518

I know of no other Dune Quest.

>>25781530

That comes down to what your family believes, since most of the ruling class is agnostic. I'll give you that option later. But if your local populace is Zensunni or some other Islamic branch that's quite fine as well.
>>
>>25781511
Our homeworld is a stark, mountainous planet, orbiting a blue star; the people are clever and hard-working and Jews!
>>
I'm going to grab a pizza while the info dump is digested. Be back in 30 or so.
>>
>>25781530
Why not, let's be a zensunni house keeping the old faith alive.
>>
>>25781624
Works for me, except for the religion part. I'd rather not have us be unique snowflakes.
>>
>>25781511
I don't know a thing about dune other than HOUSE HARKONNEN but here goes.

Homeworld: Augustin Prime, a single-climate tundra world. Bitter, frozen and relentless, much like the hardy nomad-populace that lives there. Their lives are spent moving, always in search of more favourable positions to make camp for the yearly eclipse which plummets temperatures way below the norm.
>>
>>25781530
I'm cool with being a Zensunni.

>>25781511
Arid, but not a desert world. Mountainous with lots of tectonic activity, so lots of volcanoes. High gravity and an abundance of heavy elements. Mostly a world of mining and industry.
>>
>>25781763
>>25781624
Let's combine these, plus zensunni and we're set!
>>
>>25781511

... I kinda want to Ginaz because swords and mercenaries.

I'll play it like Mandalore and have it led by space Syrio Forel.

But I'll defer to the majority.
>>
>>25781829
Crap, >>25781783 too.

A mountaineous tundra world where tribes travel from volcanic area to next in search of heat. When the winter comes they settle and dig, giving the birth for industry.
>>
>>25781843
What are Ginaz and Mandalore?
>>
>>25781871
Ginaz is an ocean planet renowned for its techniques in swordplay and its mercenaries in the DUNE verse.

Mandalorian is a religion(?) in the Star Wars universe, very martial focused.
>>

A planet much like our own earth. Because it's familiar and has every kind fo resources.

Your homeworld is called Augustin Prime. It is the only habitable planet in its solar system. It orbits quickly around a blue star that just barely keeps the planet from turning into a ball of ice.

The people of your planet are Zensunnis who fled persecution millenia ago. They decided that the harsh nature of the planet would suit them and deter potential slavers from following and harassing their populations. As time went on they scored a number of lucrative contracts to provide heavy metals needed for Guild spacecraft, and worked up a beneficial agreement with the Spacing Monopoly. Eventually your family was recognized as the planetary authority and your status as a Siridar Baron was recognized and you were granted status initially as a minor house.

The people of Augustin Prime must wear breathing apparatuses for most of the year because of low oxygen content in the atmosphere. However seasonally there are massive volcanic eruptions along tectonic rifts on the planet's surface, and it is at this point that the planet's life bursts into activity after almost a year of dormancy: with water released into the atmosphere and large amounts of carbon dioxide suddenly available jungle springs up suddenly around these volcanoes and for several months no breathing apparatuses are required in their vicinity. All manner of creatures spring to life out of dormancy or incubation at this time. Boys are sent into the jungle to survive until it begins to wane along with the heat and air, and they then must find their way back in order to return as men or perish if the jungle's dangers don't get them first.

We'd be experts at industry and recycling. Lots of redundant systems, proficient at technology although not at the level of Ix. Being fairly religious and spartan we'd follow the Butlerian edicts against thinking machines seriously.

For military, maybe a mixture of firepower, mobility and elite units? Can't be too many of us in such a hostile environment but our soldier are good and we have the tanks/guns/grit to back it up.

So we favor napalm strikes, flamethrowers, and incendiary ammo that's capable of melting through everything.
Also, because we need to take out the enemy tank's crew, they probably are highly poisonous and emit a toxic gas.

So, to summarize.
Acidic flamethrowers capable of melting tanks.

Do personal shields work against overpressure? Because artillery shells mostly kill via overpressure. The sudden increase in ambient pressure can damage internal organs and even, in particularly nasty cases, pop them like water balloons.

Your family keeps the faith. You believe strongly in your religion, and your people can sense it. While you are regarded as an oddity amongst the Great Families you have noticed both the Bene Tleilaxu and the Bene Gesserit take an interest in your House's activities.

Your House went from a House Minor to a House Major whenever you utilized your preferential Spacing Guild contract to try and grab market share in several nearby solar systems. Whenever resistance manifested in the form of several Houses Minor aligning against you your great grandfather annihilated them in a lightning quick war of assassins and you consolidated alliances with the rest. For the first time your Family Name was noted in Landsraad meetings as you become a power.

Personal shields deflect anything moving quickly enough, so I imagine they'd absorb the force of a shockwave to prevent it from hurting the person wearing the shield. They'd still be screwed if the pressure was raised slowly or if they weren't thrown back by the shockwave.

In enclosed spaces we wouldn't even need the gas. Start controlled fires to burn out all the oxygen. If we wind up having to fight against the Fremen (I really hope we don't but we should be prepared to, just in case) we can literally suffocate them inside there own sietches, the enclosed tunnels turning against them.

There seems to be a slight preference for a Neutral reputation as far as I can tell. Some votes have left me puzzled though. I may come back to this one, or let you hang in the middle.

You have had other opportunities since then, however. Your House has had the chance to curry favor with a number of other groups and develop ties and tentative guarantees of favors with them. Spend up to three points on any of the following, all three can be spent on one, or divided as you like.

>House Corrino
The Throne. The Emperor's House. He can help you in a lot of ways, but when he comes calling on you to pay it back it would be prudent to do so. Some people will think you're a toady and watch you carefully.

>Bene Gesserit
You've helped the Sisters from time to time. They think you have interesting traits in your bloodline and have come calling before. It's possible you may be tested to determine whether or not you are "human".

>Bene Tleilaxu
They don't like people, but they do trade. It's possible that you might even have met some of their more important Masters, and they may send emissaries to your Court periodically.

>Ixians
The Ixians dig technology and so do you. Maybe you've sold them resources they can utilize at a discount, maybe you've commissioned devices that have caught their interest, or maybe they just like you.

>Ginaz
Mercenaries extraordinaire. A level ten swordmaster of ginaz goes virtually unchallenged outside of the Sardaukar, and the chance to hire or borrow some of these fine individuals wouldn't hurt you.

>Bhotani
Assassins, a sect of them have become so wealthy they've managed to found House Moritani. Perhaps you have integrated some of the Bhotani into your population, or perhaps they are a favored contractor from your wars in the past.

>Spacing Guild
You supply them with metals for their ships and influence CHOAM contracts in the Landsraad, getting them to like you shouldn't be too hard. It will be easy for you to move around and harder for your enemies to move against you in a timely fashion if they like you.

We might as well invest in technology, trade and the ability to gank folks we dislike.

On an unrelated note: Fuck yeah, Dune Quest. THis was the seminal sci-fi of my early teenaged years. Still wanna run a game of this in REIGN.
>>
>>25785104
Only if you accept the prequel novels as the same level of canonicity of the original works.

That's not an opinion Pete, it's a fact. I mean it's not even that they're BAD, they're just plain mediocre and not on the level of the original work. Less like Highlander 2 and more like the Matrix sequels.
>>
>>25785417
... I based it on Emperor: Battle for Dune. I-is that as bad?

And I'm reading OP's posts with Lady Elara's voice, while listening to Harkonnen Battle.

Non-contribution sage.
>>
Wouldn't it make more sense for Ixians and Tleilaxu to get along better than, well, most people get along with Tleilaxu? It seems like Tleilaxu take a much more technological approach to genetic modification after all.
>>
>>25785630

They can do business just like anybody else, but their view on genetics? Well, uh... you'd have to read to the end of the original series. They play the long game.
>>
Tleilaxu and Niners are top tier.
>>
>>25785622
Great game. Ordos were really fucked up.
>>
I'd like to cast a vote for Guild, Ix and Tlielaxu as well
>>
>>25785425
Are the BG as suited for Ganking as a family of assassins, though? The Guild is obvious: our House history is on their good side and we supply them with a whole lotta material goods.

The Ixians would love our ore, and might give us cheap tech in exchange for a steady stream of raw materials Yes, this is shit economics, sure me

Our third group is either the Tleilaxu (crazy genetic engineer bastards) who have access to cool tech, but are probably gonna clash with the Zensunni in us (if not for the reveals behind their biotech)

WHile having House Corrino as an ally (fuck YES imperial family shortcuts), that road is usually incestuous, bloody, and ends in extremely petty Imperial infighting.

Not Assassins... not high key enough to mark us as targets (Like the Atreides had befall them), but still useful enough that we could throw our weight around if we needed to
>>
>>25785656
I'm still reading Children of Dune, man I need to catch up.
>>

Rolled 96

Bene Gesserit are information, badasschicks, and other such things. Assassination isn't the primary goal. I'd rather have them as my friends than as my neutral
>>
>>25785622
Great games, but they do kinda fuck with the lore a touch to make for a better rts.
>>
>>25785766
We're getting Bene Tleilaxu. They're nearly as deadly, and four times as likely to attack us if we're not allies.

On the other hand, Bene Gesserit HAVE no allies. Only Convenient Dupes.
>>
>>25785622
Dune 2000 was ballin'! Good pick!

It's a shame. i read the Dune prequels in my teenaged years, and I still find they informa air bit of the series prehistory, even if the actual plotting and writing was sub-par at best.

I still find myself thinking of the Atreides and Ixians as buddy-buddy, even when they ought to be at serious odds.

Also, wasn't the Thinking Machines on Ix kind of a rumored thing? Nothing was substantiated or proven, but the rumors persisted and peopled whispered about it behind their backs
>>
>>25785781
Like how you can have laser tanks fire on other shielded laser tanks and a thermonuclear explosion WON'T happen?
>>
Am I correct in tallying the votes in favor of Ix, Guild, and Tleilaxu? Or am I off? Anybody care to double check?

I'm glad to have so many Dune fans on board so early.

Come Thursday, look to the East!

I shall return to run the quest at 8PM Central or so, though I may be a bit early or a bit late. I'll be hanging around the thread but not creating, just answering questions.
>>
>>25785882
yes, this is correct.

So we have light associations with the interstellar transport faction, the biotech faction, and the manufacturing faction.

How intense does the 1-3 doe thing mean. 1 dot means we're open to agreements, 2 dots means we're mutual trade partners, 3 dots means we're chained to the wrist, right?

maybe it's the fact i was watching I, Claudius, but I can't see anything in this setting sexually. It's more about how one routs political opponents through guile than anything to fap to. Even sex is either to produce an heir or breed a superhuman. I can't see the fapfodder, guys

tbh, I was joking with my posts, but the bodydancers think is kindof there. my joke was that this quest would probably be more resilient to fetishism than the average one, but eh.

>>25786627

It isn't as formal as that. Just a measure of how much time you've put into currying favor with who and how much.
>>
Rolled 6

>>25786578
What time period in the Imperium will this take place in? I'm getting the impression of pre-Dune timeline (we still have a Padisha Emperor, there's no Quizatch Haderach, etc), but that's just guesswork.

Are we playing as an individual, or as aHouse? I was reading the Second Year of our REIGN web enhancement from Greg Stolze's website, and I can't help but thing a game where the only stats we have are the Company rules would be ballin'

>>25786663
No offense taken. I've just become a little aversive to sexual fetishism in quests lately.
>>
>>25784909
I vote to invest two points with the Ixians for the technological advantage and a point with the Spacing Guild for possible Future Trade Advancments

>>25786627
I too am curious. I'm kinda glad we didn't sink tons into one other faction; as a rising House it works. Also, we'll get to actually make meaningful contacts ourselves.
>>
>>25786713

Pre-Dune.

An individual and a House. A Dynasty really, but with a main character so you can relate to the story beyond numbers.

>>25786757
will we get to at least attempt to corner the Spice market, is it optional, or is it default?
>>
I hope that one point for Ix and Tleilaxu would be enough to at least net us one Mentat and access to make a couple of Gholas, respectively.

I think we can make do with that for a possible War of Assassins.
>>
>>25786840

There will be some amount of interface, but I'll be accounting for a lot of qualitative rather than quantitative variables.
