You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. After a great deal of work, you have become a Paladin like your Father, and now take up his duties.

You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mari, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighters, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.

Your journey continues...

You journey north has been exceptionally eventful. The orc Tisgut, scout for the Red Wolf tribe, has returned your rescue, generosity, and hospitality by attempting to take food from your group, drawing one of the Ice Abominations to your camp, and taking you to an orc tribe that's in the middle of a clan war. Then charging headlong into said war.

Perhaps that's being a bit disingenuous. The Ice Thing was just bad luck. Also, he didn't know that the Hawk Tribe was planning on ambushing and enslaving/killing all of the members of this part of the Rat Tribe.

Also, the Rat Tribe was fairly hospitable, for orcs, and gave you shelter and warmth, which is vital for survival out on the Tundra Plains.

But either way, the Hawk Tribe has surrounded the Rat Tribe encampment, 25 warriors inside, and 50 warriors outside. Also, they made the rather rude statement to Tisgut that he was their guest-hostage and would be traded back to Red Wolf. Also, that you and the Dawnchasers were now Hawk Property. Tisgut is many things, but he is NEVER a hostage, he is NOT a Thing, and NO ONE insults Red Wolf guests. (Which apparently you are, as well as being referred to as the 'Snake Tribe.')

Tisgut's response to the ultimatum that if he behaves calmly he will be treated with respect, and promptly returned to his tribe?

A drawn sword and a charge with a very succinct verbal argument:

"GWWWWUUUUUUUUUUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!"

Sweet Lamia quest is a tad early.

Also I have an idea on how to go cloudkill w/ minimal kills:

Get mage to do some sort of filter spell on everyone then saturate the area in cloudkill. Then amplify your voice and tell everyone to settle the fuck down or die a really painful death via cloudkill.
>>
>>25916921
Cloudkill takes multiple factors into account, not least of which being wind and atmospheric conditions. And since I don't think we've made a concerted effort to weaponize this stuff, I don't think Mage has a spell to protect specific people from its effects. Which doesn't mean we can't ask, but the alternative to him having it ready would be him making it up on the spot, which would likely take some time and would be a big risk.

So for the time being, cloudkill may be off the table.
>>
>>25916921
We need to somehow draw the hawks away from the rats before we can use any kind of cloudkill- the history of mage inventing spells on the spot in the past has been near universally lethal.

I say we punch right through the shaman and her fighting men, get behind them, and force them to either focus on us or get killed off from behind.
>>
>>25917048
it'd be quite tricky to use it effectively, yeah. We need to be extremely careful with it, if we use it at all. Though I don't know how we're beating 75 orcs without it, unless they break and run easier than we think.
>>
>>25917048
Echo did say we could use cloudkill without consequence in the last thread.

Also 75 fucking orcs.
>>
>>25917173
I am here to emphasize
>could
We have to be careful to not also kill the rats. Or worse, our friends. Also, if we can resolve this without killing all the hawks, well, that's mercy shown and an enemy that might be a friend one day.
>>
>>25917048
Just so you know, Mage's plan is to generate a massive windstorm to negate the chances of the Hawk archers filling you all full of arrows. This will effect the Cloudkill. Also, as before, to generate enough of all three poisons and mix them together within yourself so you excrete the cloudkill will take six rounds, less if you make a 14+ roll.

You'll be able to make a single action while you do that, so one attack with Beacon or an attack with your tail, not both.

Also, the Hawk orc soldiers have a single long heath bar, which will drop dice as you wipe them out.

The Hawk Warchief and the Shaman have their own separate health bars.

The Rat orcs will be helping, but there's a 3-5 ratio between the two clans, favoring the Hawks.

Tisgut and the Rat Shaman are allies in this fight.

Any other information you would like?
>>
I'm going to have to say that this is a perfect time to use cloudkill.
>>
>>25917194
>any other information you would like?

Can I have a vague formation of how troops and noncombatants are placed? I want to draw up a little MSpaint battlefield sketch.
>>
>>25917194
First off can Mage keep people from inhaling cloudkill via filtration? Secondly the orcs have symbols on them right, like the ratskulls and feathers. Mage said they were being used for the shaman magic, so could he use them to apply that spell?
>>
>>25917221
>Can I have a vague formation of how troops and noncombatants are placed? I want to draw up a little MSpaint battlefield sketch.

It's a circular ambush, there's two rings of orcs, archers behind bladesmen, surrounding the camp. In the center is the war party, they're in a triangle pattern pointing towards the mass of Rat orcs in the center. The Hawk warchief is at the tip of the triangle, and the shaman is being protected in the center.

The rats are in three small circular blobs. One facing the war party. One in front of the civilian tent, and the third by the chief's tent, also protecting the shaman.

You, the Dawnchasers, and Tisgut are off to the side of the triangle by your own tent.
>>
we could probably have mage shape the windstorm so it dost go into the rat settlement, that would wipe out the hawks outside.
>>
>>25917263
>First off can Mage keep people from inhaling cloudkill via filtration? Secondly the orcs have symbols on them right, like the ratskulls and feathers. Mage said they were being used for the shaman magic, so could he use them to apply that spell?

No, he can alter the winds he's summoning, along with the shaman. He CAN use the fetishes that the tribes are wearing as targets for some wide area spells, he could try and haste all the orcs wearing Rat charms, for example.
>>
>>25917194
Well, I'm going to go ahead and give my views on the general strategic and tactical situations.

The arrows can be negated two ways: preventing them from finding their mark via windstorm (screening), or by moving the fight indoors (terrain management). A 3-5 ratio with bombardment out of the question favors the defenders.

My suggestion would be to have Mage do a windstorm screen while we gank the Hawk shaman and warchief. We have the advantage of being inside a village, so once the smaller force closest to us is wiped out the force outside will have to come in closer.

When that happens all we need to do is focus on where the attackers might bottleneck and attack there. Victory without using Cloudkill or taking ourselves out of the fight for several rounds.

So my only question is how defensible is the Rat village?
>>
>>25917338
Isn't haste not supposed to be used on humanoids? Could it be cranked up a bit to overwork their bodies and disable them?
>>

Allright, made a little terribly drawn aid for the fight.

Anyway, my plan stays the same. We bust through the primary triangle hawk formation, and then get to eating them one by one from behind. They've spread their forces out, with the exception of one concentration. If we take that down, then we're individually superior against the remaining forces unless they change strategy and clump up on us, inviting a friendly fire free cloudkill.
>>
>>25917343
>So my only question is how defensible is the Rat village?
It's a collection of hide tents, a penned corral of hind deer, and a bunch of fire pits.
>>
>>25917332
yeah, if we just use the windstorm to keep EVERYTHING out of the settlement, we are free to use poison on the outside.
>>
>>25917508
Move the triangle inside the tent ring
>>
>>25917435
And basically burst the Hawk tribe's hearts?

Sounds like a solid plan, so long as it's preceded by gank the shaman.
>>
>>25917605
Well I was hoping for a less lethal route, but geeking the mage for her foci is probably a needed thing

Done and done.
>>
>>25917631
Geek the mage is our universal starting plan.

Whether or not she is killed or KOed really depends on how easy she goes down.
>>
>>25917653
That's about right.

Any other information needed?
>>
>>25917546
So in other words, not at all. The fire pits could be used as foxholes if they were big enough, but that wouldn't be sufficient.
>>25917548
Rotating around an eye would work to keep arrows from hitting their targets, but the gas would need a different trick. Maybe moving higher-altitude air down and outward, pushing gas away from the camp in all directions?
>>
>>25917670
Can we use haste for a non-lethal KO on the orcs by overworking their systems?
>>
We might want to go a bit crazy on killing our enemies, like what we did to the undead thing int the druid cabin. A sufficently skillful or gory kill may weaken the morale of the Hawk orcs and force them to retreat or rout if we kill a higher ranked or very strong orc.
>>
>>25917680
from what I remember it's a sinking gas, so that would probably work.

>>25917670
I can't think of any more information I want that wouldn't be metagaming. Like "what's the childhood fear of all those orcs"
>>
>>25917548
Yeah, this seems pretty reasonable. Get everyone into the eye of the storm, spray cloudkill into the storm, and then let the wind distribute it.
>>
>>25917694
that's why I've said now for the third time we should start by tearing into the orc-triangle. It's got their leader AND shaman, and we can get off a beacon shine in there to further the effect, and we can't use the gas until we get rid of them anyway since they're actually inside the rat camp.
>>
>>25917722
Geeking the mage also gives us access to magically effect the other hawk orcs with the feathers the shaman has.
>>
>>25917697
How would that not work? Heavier than air gasses can be blown around from place to place by even a relatively light breeze.
>>
>>25917756
>so that would probably work
I said it would probably work. Literally. It's a heavier than air gas, which means we could push it around without it floating up and being caught in the downdraft of fresh air that the rats need to breathe.
>>
>>25917753
You're cunning. I wonder what mage can do with that. Since it's a stalking spell, he can at -least- make all the orcs polkadot pink.
>>
>>25917812
the stalking spell was ended. The feathers act like mage's staff only suckier.
>>
>>25917829

The Hawk Shaman takes out her fetish staff and starts to chant. You see the blade, skin, and eyes of the warchief start to glow red.

Lea is fighting the orcs that are keeping her from putting her fist in the shaman's face. (There's about four orcs between your group and her.) She does her double strike Lamia Style.

The warchief matches off against Tisgut.

Mage starts up his windstorm. (All arrows are going to get a penalty, but if he makes his check they all get blown off course.)

The Rats fight with...well...with the fury of a cornered rodent. A few fall to blades, and you see one drop from arrows, but more Hawks end up in the mud than rats.

Tisgut and the warchief lock blades, snarling. Tricia managed to sink an arm into the warchiefs flesh, but she jumps back with a scream of pain as the red glow washes over her. You see one of her arms revert back to normal.

Peri fells an orc as well.

The shaman finishes her changing, and the warchief lets out a roar. You see his eyes are now pure blood red, his muscles swell and throb with power and speed. You see that red energy run all across his body in intricate patterns.

Lea continues to try and fight through the inner war party.

The warchief manages to get three strikes out at Tisgut in a blur of motion that makes your head spin.

Mage tries to call up the winds again to hold back the tide of arrows.

The Hawks have no chance against you, as you all dart and bob out of the way of clumsy attacks.

The Rats do well also. However, the sheer number of opposition means that they do lose a few more. They're still good, but you can see that soon things are going to go in the Hawk's favor.

Tricia swipes at the warchief with her good mantis arm and reforms her other, you also see her chanting.

Peri is still in the battle with the orcs.

The shaman points her spiked club at you and a bolt of electricity leaps out from it.

Lea continues to fight the horde.

The warchief continues to assault Tisgut with his flurry of strikes and blows.

Mage tries to force the wind to keep up a bit more so he can be of more help.

Quick Question

Is the direction of the wind pushing -Towards- The Shaman and group of guardsorcs?

this is important

We probably wanna expel our poison and get Rout Tisgut out of the area
>>
>>25919892
also uh forgot.

If we choose to charge at them with the winds at our backs, that'd push us a little you know.
>>
>>25919892
>Is the direction of the wind pushing -Towards- The Shaman and group of guardsorcs?

Mage is actually trying for a circular wind. He doesn't want any one side of orc to have the wind with them. It's centered around the large fire pit in the center. The wind is going counter-clockwise. (Widdershin winds are...well...magic babble aside, it's the easiest wind spell)

The clear is a pain to generate.

So you want to not do a combat swipe but just a huge sweep of your tail to try and push enough orcs out of the way to get to the shaman?

Okay, target roll with 3d20.
>>

Peri goes for the shaman.

The Hawk shaman tries to club Peri with her spiked fetish club.

Of course, that's not fatal to an orc...but Beacon seemed to like it, bloodthirsty thing that it is.

Beacon has three charges now.

The Rats make their assault.

Tisgut grabs his blade and does two attacks on the warchief.

The shaman chants and points her club at the storm clouds that Mage summoned.

Rolled 12, 17, 17, 1, 13, 15, 2 = 77

The Shaman restores the winds to their earlier gale force, keeping the archers out of play.

Tisgut tries, but the warchief is his equal, at least with the spell he is.

The Rats continue to do quite well...but a few over extend themselves, they break formation to charge in and slaughter their target, only to find that it was a feint and they get wiped out by the Hawks. Still, the Hawks might have given up too much for too little.

The Hawks resume their assault. Though they're still not getting any traction with the arrows. You see that only some of the arrow men are firing, others are drawing out hand to hand blades. The Rats will be VERY outnumbered when that happens.

Also, your group of fellows is still giving you problems.
>>
Can we tail disarm and swivel into a sweep on the asshats behind up, giving them a taste of whatever the club does to them?
>>
>>25920858

The Rats are starting to get outnumbered, however, the new arrivals aren't in best formation with the others, so, as what can happen in a crowded, muddy fog-of-war,, a few Hawks end up killing other Hawks.

Lea also takes a blow.

Tricia continues her assault on the Warchief.

Peri shakes off the blow to the head.

The shaman shoots another lightning bolt off at you.

Lea continues to deal with the mob, honestly, aside from when she's in her meditative bliss state, this is the happiest you've ever seen Lea.

There is nothing here but more death, and the Rats will give no slaves, no tribute, nothing, just a burnt ground and the few left will die when the night winds come.

So they run. They have no choice. To stay and fight is death, and orcs honor strength, but there's a difference between strength and stupidity.

Of course, there are always those who refuse to run. A fifth of the hawks that are fighitng the rats remain. They stay because they choose to, to prove that they aren't cowards, to let their fellows escape, or that they knew that this would be their last raid and wanted to go out like warriors.

The Hawk Shaman continues to chant though the lighting bolt, and through Tricia's slice that rips open her stomach, spilling her guts out on the dirt.

She hits the ground, bleeding out...but she's still chanting.

Peri looks at the runes and the chanting orc, she spins on her heel and runs, only slowling down slightly as the last Hawk hits her with his blade, she still runs.

Lea also bolts from the shaman.

Mage has already been running since Tricia gutted the orc.

The two last hawks aren't running, they haven't looked at the Shaman yet. They're trying to figure out to either attack you or Tisgut.

The shaman's chanting continues, even as she bleeds out, and her runes glow brighter still.

"Tricia, Tisgut, RUN!" You shriek and streak away, keeping away from the others.

Tisgut and the Shaman take off, and you see the Rats running, taking the women and children that were not fighters with them.

Tricia finally shifts her arms and (now you notice) her eyes back to normal and takes off.

You're all clear when the runes go off.

You're all knocked to the ground from the impact.

"Everyone okay?" Tricia groans as she gets up. "Ssen?"

"I wanna go home." Mage says. "And don't get near Ssen, she's still covered in that poison gas stuff."

"Holy shit." Peri says.

"I don't know why I'm even surprised that we helped cause that size of a crater." Lea says. "Ssen, do you know how to stop...oozing?"
>>
if killing the shaman would ruin the spell at this point I don't think peri would be running, if we want to try and stop it our best bet is using beacon, followed immediately by using its dispel magic function.

"Yeah just... Just give it a bit to dry off. An hour or so...out in the tundra cold. I think I'm going to go for a slither. Maybe find some slaves, direct them from a good distance to wait at the cart for freedom." You say.

"Okay." Tricia says. "We'll see what we need to do with the Rat tribe, see if there's anything left that they can pick up."

You slither off. Ugh...the cold, the mud, the smoke, the dust, and not to mention the cold...how can anything live here?

Well, let's see if any of the Hawk's slave porters are still around. They hung back and took off when the fighting started. Thankfully, the mud and looking for human prints as opposed to orc prints make this a bit easier.

"There is nothing but death to the north. Creatures that even give me pause. Please, come with me."

The woman and the man look at each other. The woman holds the child close and shakes her head. The man looks at you and shakes his head.

You sigh "I am sorry that is your choice. May His Light preserve you from the things that dwell on the ice. I really don't do cold well, so I can't follow, especially not alone. So, if you insist, here. You'll need something better than a rock."

You take out a skinning knife and hold it out to him, handle first. He cautiously steps forward, and quickly grabs the knife away. He seems a little startled, but he nods his head at you.

"Thank you." He says.

The kid and the wife look very unhappy.

"Don't talk to it." The woman says. "Come on." She pulls at the man's shoulder.

"Yes. We have to go. My parents are waiting." The kid says.

They walk north towards the Ice.

You shrug and turn to go back to the others.

You walk for about ten minutes, when you hear a shriek of terror back the other way.

>>25924598

You get closer, but not on the ice and try to see what's going on.

The man and the woman are running towards the solid ground. They haven't seen you. The man is using your skinning knife to try and fend off the things coming after them.

They're kids. All of them look exactly like the same kid that was clinging to the others. Same strawberry-blonde hair, some ruddy cheeks, same grey eyes, and all of them have rocks or sticks.

They're screeching and hissing at the adults as they run. There's at least twenty of them, running and scrambling after them. They run like kids though, so they don't go too fast, some of them trip, and a few you can see have knife wounds, cutting open their flesh that's not bleeding.

They cut down across what has to be a small island of land in the ice. most of the kids run around it, but one is hot on their trail and runs over the hard ground. The moment his foot his dirt, the kid's frozen wound spouts out a mass of black blood and he screams in pain, he drops to the ground as you see his flesh grow red and pucker. The child drags himself back onto the ice, and you see his flesh grow black and cold again, and he picks himself up and continues the chase.

Right now, as they are, they're going to get swarmed.

You can call out to them, and maybe they'll be able to make it on their own. They'll have a better chance as right now they're running blinldly and don't know where the Ice ends and the Land begins. Letting them know where to run will give them a chance. But the horde of kids will know where you are then.

And of course, you can always make it a certain that they'll reach you, and go out onto the Ice...but then you're on the Ice.
>>
>>25924788
Call out for them, and move... a bit onto the ice. Meet them midway, earn them a moment of time to run by fighting a horde of children, then run.

Either that or call out and then cover them with arrows. Depending on how good of a shot we are.

Totally stupid. Use them on the kids, after whispering a prayer to the Light to protect the two from the Ice. And if necessary, go on the Ice.

You set off one to one side and one to the other.

They blast off with a mass of sparks fire, and soar through the air with all the accuracy of a thrown cat strapped to an albatross in the middle of the night by a blindfolded hyper-active nine year old.

Still they go in the general direction of the child horde, and the man and woman look and point at the trail of sparks and smoke. It looks like they're following THAT more than just the sound of your voice.

The firecracker explode in a burst of sound, color, and fire.

The children cover their ears at the noise, and a few shield their eyes at the flare of light. One of them was close enough to the blast to be knocked away. He falls to the ground, and when he gets back up you see that he's been burnt a little, but his flesh is cold and he/she/it is unaffected.

The couple are running towards you.
>>
Lurker here.

I'm going to sleep now so I've got to mention this.

If these people get caught before getting off the ice, DO NOT go onto the ice.

They could be reanimated as well and simply a trick to try and get you to go onto the ice where I am sure there will be a powerful mental attack waiting.

The kids all hit the deck, covering their ears and shielding their eyes when they see the second one streaming towards them. Still it stops the little bastards from running.

"WHERE ARE YOU?! WE CAN'T SEE YOU IN THE STORM!" The man yells. "LIGHT ANOTHER FLARE! HURRY!"

"OVER HERE!" You yell.

"WHERE?!" The woman yells. "WE CAN'T SEE ANYTHING IN THIS WIND! PLEASE! HELP US!"

"Alright, Time to live up to your name and be a light in this darkness." You say to Beacon and slam the end into the ground.

The spear flares. It's not the Morning Star, but it's still a big-ass light.

"THIRTY MORE FEET FORWARD! QUICKLY!" You shout.

The pair bolt straight toward you and crash into you.

"Thank you thank you thank you thank..AAAHH! Oh...YOU!" The woman says going from relief, to hysterical horror, to shock.

"You...you came back for us?" The man asks in disbelief.

You're more occupied with the mob of children. They all look perfectly identical, and they're all standing there...looking at you.

You can see with your heat eyes, that the only trace of life in them is their hearts, which are beating very very slowly.

They glare at you. Then there's a sharp whistle and they all turn around.

You see Him then. The Cold Dark Man. He's standing just out of detail sight on the ice. He motions for the children to come to him, and they do...skipping away happily. You hear a few laugh.

The Cold Dark Man then gives you, specifically you, a casual wave of his hand, then walks further out onto the ice.

"What...what ARE those things?" The man asks. "We...we saw his parents, before...when we were planning our escape...but...but...what ARE those things?!" He asks you.

So I spent some time looking up Inuit/Eskimo mythological creatures.

"The Ijirait are said to inhabit somewhere between two worlds; not quite inside this one, nor that one. Inuit further south than the North Baffin group used to hold to a belief that some Inuit went too far north in the chase for game, and became trapped between the world of the dead and the world of the living thus became the Ijirait (or Tariaksuq?). To a small handful of surviving elders in the South Baffin Region that are old enough to still have knowledge of these beliefs, Inuit that are settled in Resolute Bay and Grise Fiord are these shape shifters or shadow people, because they went too far north. Some elders will avoid being in presence of extreme-northern inuit, fearing they are evil Ijirait or Tariaksuq."

Fuck.
>>
>>25925894
"I think so, these two aren't doing too badly. Turns out going onto the ice also blinds you with some kind of magic storm, in addition to scary monsters. Who knew?"

Then, while hugging Tricia to the two humans

"Hey, what were your names anyway? I didn't think to ask"
>>
>>25925956
"The home of the Ijirait is said to be cursed, and one will lose their way, even if they have good sense on the land. Buott and his wife Enoogoo were said to be out hunting once on the small peninsula across the bay from Freeman's Cove; and while Buott was known locally as someone who never lost his way even in the most adverse conditions, it was said he became completely turned around. While he and his wife had been there before, and they could clearly see the ocean on both side of where they were camped, Buott had to closely follow the trail of disturbed shale and rock to get back to their main camp -where their four children were alone, a mere 5 miles away, and clearly visible on the horizon."

"I made new friends, they're escaped Orc Slaves. I found these two out near the ice and then on the ice after they disregarded my warnings and followed a boy who turned out to be one of those ice creatures and had a bunch of little friends and I saw the Cold Dark Man again." You say. "He says Hi, by the way. Oh, I didn't get your names, did I? I'm Ssen, this Tricia and over there is Lea."

"I'm Terry, and this is Tammy." The man says. "She's my sister...sorta. Cousin really, but...we grew up together, if you can call it that."

"Where are you from?" Lea asks.

"Windy Star." Tammy says.

"Ah." Lea nods. "Yes, Ssen...I think I know WHY the Paladins were called up here all those years back."

"They came, they fought the orks, and then they said we had to leave." Terry said. "They abandoned us, said that this was Orc land and the best solution was to let them have it." He scowls. "Dad refused. Said he'd keep it until the end." He sneers at the Orcs. "And it came when these beasts killed him!"

Tisgut shrugs. "Live in one place, know can come back. Warrior told, not Rat, then Hawk, not Hawk, then Boar, not Boar, then other."

"We never did anything to you!" Tammy screams.

Tisgut nods. "Yes, but had things could take. We took. You fought, beaten." He shrugs. "Surprised when returned found still there. Fought again, beat again, took." He points at the Rats. "Told Tisgut story. Tisgut saw no wrong. Surprised didn't move. Loss happens, pick up what can, move safer place, start again, or take from other, or die." He shrugs. "Life. Warriors understood. Why Rats let warriors take things with them."

"Monsters..." Tammy mutters through clenched teeth and gives you a look of death.

He has his own agenda, his own logic, his own values. And he probably knows exactly who we are and why we're here, and in all likelihood he doesn't care. Because based on our dream, it seems he's unfathomably twisted, even by Land Spirit standards.

"Sirala punched Mage in the shoulder, but Mage didn't hit her back." Tricia says with a giggle.

"I've read too many books to be fooled by THAT trick!" Mage shouts from Wagon where he's helping Orcs load up. "I know hitting a woman who hits you back from a violent culture is a quick trip the the altar! You're not getting me hitched THAT easy!"

"You're already married to Mab!" Peri says.

"Annulled by death! We ain't remarried YET!"

"And Sophie already asked me to be the one who speaks from the Teachings." Lea says.

"And you ask why I agreed to come up here to this frozen hell!" Mage snaps. "It's also why I DON'T respond to those letters Her Illuminated Self keeps sending me!"

"Wait, what letters?" Peri asks.

"Crap." Mage mutters.

The orc laughs. "He is quite spirited and I am very upset that I have little chance to breed and copulate with him, maybe later I can slip a chemical additive into his food and make him more pliable to by advances." The shaman, who's name is Sirala, shakes her head. "Our chief wishes me to thank you, and your tribe. The Snake Tribe is now a Friend of the Rat Tribe and shall be given respect and a seat at our fire.

"Also, I am sad to say that our goods are quite lacking now that the Hawks have caused us to be of a loss by means of their incendiary detonation. Thankfully, Tisgut, He of the Red Wolf, has afforded us the exchange of travel with him to his clan site. We have some items that survived the blast that he wishes his clan to obtain and thus will be willing to supply us with new goods once we arrive."

You'll be fighting a war with that one.

Which is counterproductive to what we need to be happening. Which is getting the Orcs to help with PE. This isn't Citadel where you can break one thing and fix it. We have many tribes up here all with with there own cultures most likely. It's going to be a pain to just get them to talk...

I think a fortress would have been needed to give you guys a better chance of survival than a homestead the way things are up here.
By the way there were magical barriers keeping the orcs out of of the lands a day or two south of here. They've collapsed now but it would have been a slightly better place and not so far removed.

"If we try to make camp." Tricia says. "Tisgut, Sirala and the Rat Chief say that it's almost certain that the Hawks will return. They'll be out for blood, and have more skilled warriors, 'hunting sleds' which are apparently very bad news, and more shamans.

Which means that we either make like crazy for a Boar tribe site. Which we can maybe reach, if we're lucky, and manage to get their protection, which won't be as easy as it was with the rats."

She sighs.

"Or we can make for the Red Wolf camp, which we can reach pretty swiftly...but...it means crossing the Ice...at night." She says. "Tisgut says that he's never done that. Ever. He says he's never heard of anyone doing that. It's only because we've got such a big group that he's even considering it. He does say that we won't get lost because you can ALWAYS see the Red Wolf camp on the Ice. I assume he's talking about the giant wall of fire.

"Anyway, you're the leader of the Snake Tribe, Ssen. Your call."
>>
>>25926442
They would owe us enough to help with the fight vs PE not to change their way of life.
>>
>>25926456
Lets Cross the Ice!

I mean at least we know what we're dealing with... right?

So we're probably gonna be searching for Boar Tribe huh
>>

"I prefer my odds with the Hawks than the Ice.

"Pretty sure we can run a mean rear guard if we need too."

Not really. Not when your asking people to change their culture of life. I tend remember that doesn't go over real well with people.

This is the hard part, isn't it Dad?
>>
So, basically, we are going full circle all the way back to boar tribe.

We effectively got nowhere. What a productive day.
>>
>>25926554
We would have already changed their lives by the simple matter of killing the god. Also it does put us as the strongest thing around in orc logic don't it?

Its either that or the ice

They say fate favors the bold but...

"All things being equal, Boar. We'd probably need to go there anyway at some point, and I don't want to do something as stupid as crossing the Ice until I get a better feel for the Ice Man himself."

>>
>>25926587
>Also it does put us as the strongest thing around in orc logic don't it?

Possibly, but that also might just make us a target for them. And when we tell them to change something that they've had for gods knows how long someone or group of people will challenge that. Nothing worst than infighting when you need people to be untied for a bigger fight.
>>
>>25926607
SAS "Who Dares Wins."

But I'm pretty sure even they would say fuck that noise to the Ice.

My vote's boar. The ice thing would be a much better story, but we DID promise to not go any further on the ice than we absolutely had to.

He'll be back.

They just can't fucking stay away. The downside to being a Light in the dark is that sometimes the vermin are drawn towards you.
>>
>>25926625
we'll do something BETTER than tell them to change something.

We'll go in and take their slaves. Every one. From every tribe. Over any over. It will be folklore- Don't take slaves, or a snake lady will get you.
>>
"Okay, first off, that snake tribe thing is really flattering but you don't have to do it.

"Second off... war sleds? Really? -really-? Tisgut, how much worse is it at night than it is at day?"

"Things look like orcs or human during day." Tisgut says. "Night...things looks like thing we fought. Only things aren't tiny like that one." He shrugs. "Still, Things dislike large crowds...maybe big enough, reach Red Wolf."

"Yeah..." You say. "Exactly why will be it be more difficult to get in good with the Boar Tribe? I already have a pretty good idea how bad it'll get out on the Ice. You're not going to believe what the hell was chasing those two Trish."

"After all the shit we've been through, Ssen, I think you'd be surprised what I can believe." Tricia says.

Tisgut sighs. "Fight Boar, also want tribute. Always want tribute." He points to Sirala and Terry and Tammy. "At least...may demand more." He gestures to the other Dawnchasers and the younger orcs.

"So we fight them some more and prove that we're not to be messed with." Tricia says.

Tisgut shakes his head. "Boar biggest. Boar make rules. Boar say tribute, Boar get tribute. Tisgut make Snake Tribe not tribute." He shakes his head. "But Human Things? Tribute, no question." He sighs. "Maybe keep free, but fight many Boar, or Best Boar...and if win...Boar hold grudges. Keep word, hold LONG grudges."
>>
>>25926684
Yeah, one problem there buddy. Time. We don't have that really. Remember back in the South there's what 500k army of PE waiting around for the orders to march. They are going to wait so long.
>>

Seriously! They don't leave you alone! Remember when you saw your father kill your birth mothers? No? Well, now you do! And here's that time you almost killed Tricia! "So either we run like hell across The Ice and face whatever horrors it has to offer. Or we contend with a tribe that hold grudges for a long long time..dammit."
>>
>>25926699
"How would knowledge of how to kill a God stack up in terms of Tribute?"
>>
>>25926776
Fine by me. But as long as we don't fuck around with Orcs until after that PE problem has been dealt with.

I'm pretty sure we'll have to put a tribe down or two anyways... We'll see.
>>
>>25926699
"We've little choice then. The things on the ice will kill us, true, but at least they won't charge us for the privilege."

Bit of good fortune there. The Rats managed to 'find' one barrel of the stuff. Tisgut says that it's not as much as he would like, but he can make use of it.

You also have three bottles of lamp oil and two more fireworks, and Mage. Apparently fire spells are a BIG deal. Shamans can do a lot of things easier and a lot of things that Mage just can't do at all, but fire is a unique thing.

Basically, there were monsters that came out after sunset that burned on contact with light, but otherwise would fucking eat your shit.

This is the solution.

Same principle, but with fire.

Oh, yes, Lightmare is an asset as well.

So, I'm calling for a vote. Run past the Hawks and deal with the Boars, or risk the Ice during the Night.
>>

Let's not discount our BURNING HORSE.
The fucker took down an entire forest not two days ago.

"Well, I'm pretty sure we can make it across the ice, it sounds like a crazy enough plan to work. How fast can the rat tribe move? We can get along at quite a clip with our crazy burning horse."

I can't believe I'm saying this... But lets hit the Ice. Lots of fire. Lots of Light. Hopefully the bigger shit stays away...

Across the Ice.

Yeah, fire spells just don't work. The source of Magic that Orc Shamans draw from just fizzles out when they try to use it to make fire.

And, as you know, Mage has a private reserve of juice that's separate from local sources.

As retarded as this seems, Ice might actually be doable. It's an unknown at this point, where we know that the Boar are going to be a problem.

Although we could get our crew out of any issues with the Boar by pointing out that even the most human of them are BARELY at this point.

"So either we run like hell across The Ice and face whatever horrors it has to offer. Or we contend with a tribe that hold grudges for a long long time..dammit." You sigh. "How fast can the Rat tribe move?"

"We have our Tundra Hinds, and our wagons, we can be quite swift in our needs, especially across the Ice, the animals can keep up with yours." She nods. "Tundra Hinds are the breed of horse that your Nightmare heralds from. I would possess no sense of surprise if there were not several Tundra Hinds that could out race your Nightmare steed upon these plains."

"Okay." You take a deep breath. "Tisgut...we're crossing the Ice tonight."

Tisgut nods. "Tisgut will let Red Wolf know that Snake Tribe fearless...Orcs...Things...Ice...Snake Tribe never see impossible..." He says something in Orcish. "That prayer to Red Wolf. Means: may we not die."

"May we not die." Sirala says. Then repeats in Orcish.

"May we not die." Tricia says. "Think we could work that into your additions to the Teachings?"

I am so absolutely horrified at the existence of a sequel that I am choosing to repress that passage from my memory. Just as I failed to repress the knowledge of the Troopers sequels. The awful, awful sequels. WHY ARE THEY SO AWFUL?
