Sorry about the lateness. I was roped into watching Pacific Rim (which was a bitchin movie, btw). Anyways time for VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest
Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/BxU7VTKr

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You first arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, and figh off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher.

You then moved on to Ustio, where you helped the beleaguered defenders fend off an Imperial offensive and stage a counterattack. While there, you also took care of a personal mission for Qyburn, got a new weapon called the Buzzbomb, recruited some new squad members, and helped Isolde regain her honor by defeating the Knight leading the Imperial forces in the area, breaking the back of the Imperial offensive.

You then returned to Gallia to help the Loyalists fight the GRA. You also found out that your grandmother and a group of Darcsen refugees have begun rebuilding your ancestral home. You then participated in a mission to rescue Archduchess Cordelia from GRA captivity. You also finally decided to move on from your past and start a relationship with your longtime friend and XO, Sam.

Currently, you're assaulting Castle Gassenarl, the headquarters of the Gallian Resistance Army, which had recently tried to overthrow Archduchess Cordelia. Unfortunately, you've fought you way to the castle's command center, only to find that your target, Baldren Gassenarl, is not there.

"Who the hell's in charge here, and where the hell is Baldren?" You scowl. "Elizabeth, I know you're in here!"

"Right behind you, sir." Elizabeth says, stepping forward and pulling off her GRA-issue helmet. "By the way, the commanding officer is that wiry looking fellow there.

You eyes lock on the officer, who takes a few steps back but tries to look vigilant.

"Elizabeth, I'll leave it up to you to extract some info from this fine, upstanding man here." You say.

"How bad do you need it?" She asks.

"Whatever it takes."

Elizabeth responds with an evil grin and turns to the officer, who suddenly pales.

Meanwhile, you turn back to the rest of your squad, who are keeping the other GRA troops in here under guard, while Price and his men keep the door secured.

"Any ideas?" You ask.

"Well, we could always just fight our way through the castle, take out he defenses from the inside." Ramirez says.

"OR, we can do this smart and just use all the comm equipment here." Sam sighs. "We're in the COMMAND center, remember?"

"Soldiers of the GRA. Heed my words.

I am Jager Stormfuhrer, Lord and Commander of the Demons of Rangriz. I have turned back invasions with my fists and bested Belkan Knights in single combat.

I call upon you brave men and women of Gallia to lay down your arms and surrender. What is it that you fight for? To protect the people? Then why attack CHILDREN. To protect home and thine throne? Then why attack and kidnap her majesty? You leaders have lost their way, even now they sacrifice some of our best to become these artifical monsters who then lose their minds. Is this what you signed up for? Is this really worth fighting for?

I ask of you, soldier to soldier, NAY, Gallian to Gallian. To lay down your arms and surrender. Let no more blood be shed this day.

If we continue this fighting, we will lose everything we will be unable to protect those we love. Now, I hate the Darcsen scum as much as any man. Our cause is just. We are trying to create the perfect Gallia. The Empire wants to take it away. In order to defend against this threat, we must stand united. We can worry about this cleansing later, for now we must defend our homes, our wives, our husbands, our children. We have just agreed to a ceasefire with the Gallian army until the Empire is pushed back once again.

Ah, finally caught up to an active thread. Time to air out my thoughts.

You know, I can't wait for the final confrontation with Karla.

Because I just know that she won't be fighting you. She'll have arranged everything so that Belkan will be saved. She'll just beg you to kill her, because she'll have nothing left to live for. Answers? All she'll want is the last comfort of being put out of her misery by the one she loves...

"You're a wonderful man, Jaeger.

>>25983065
I liked Snake Eater and Peace Walker, but... don't you think this is a little much?

Besides, what about duel on top of a burning tank?

And shouldn't there be some dramatic confrontation between Sam and Karla? That conversation would probably still fail the Bechdel test, but still important for both characters
>>
>>25983086
Of course not over who Jager ends up with. Because he ends up with Sam. But I'll duel you to keep Heloise near the top.

You have to say, you're impressed with Elizabeth's ability to cry on command. You make a mental note that if you ever have daughters, you will ENSURE that they never learn this skill, EVER.

Elizabeth continues blubbering about how everybody's dead and about Baldren's tragic surrender speech that only she seems to have heard. You're borderline terrified at how convincing she is.

And every GRA soldier with access to a radio is equally fooled. On your own friendly frequency, you can hear Gallian units reporting the GRA defenders surrendering en masse.

"Holy shit my stupid idea worked." You blink.

"Seems to be a bit of a trend." Sam shakes her head.

"Ha, that's a good one." Price says, walking back into the command center. "Sounds like something stupid enough for us to try and pull off."

"I don't know, sir, you're not quite as cute looking when you cry." One of his men jokes.

"Artya, you're like the little sister I've never had. You understand that I'm most likely going to have to hurt Matt real bad to keep up appearances."

You stare long and hard at Artya.

"EVERYTHING." You say.

As expected, Artya visibly recoils, and you're pretty damn certain she's blushing furiously under that mask. Hell, even Sam is blushing furiously from your words.

"Oh yeah, it was great," You say, continuing the charade, "we even did all the really naughty stuff, like kissing, cuddling and even HAND HOLDING, if you can believe it."

Artya pauses for a second before realizing that you're just totally messing with her.

THAT"S NOT FUNNY

"It totally is!" You laugh, wiping a tear from your eye. You then put a hand on Artya's shoulder. "But seriously, you're too young to start worrying about that sort of stuff. Just go with what comes natural."

And at that point, the Gallian army troops finally reach the command center and begin securing the area. Shortly after, General Wellings himself comes marching in. Coming in this fast, you realize that he had to be leading the attack on or near the frontlines.

"Good job, Captain. I was right to trust this to you." General Wellings nods. "Sergeant Price, you can stand down and report back to Novak. I'm sure he has more missions for you."

Price nods. "Okay team, we are leaving! Stalker, that means you too!"

"Stalker?" You ask.

With that, Artya gives you and Sam her own bear hug before running back to join her team.

"Damn fine job." General Wellings reiterates. "Now, let's get going. There's more business that we have to handle. Urgent business."

"Ramirez, round up the rest of the squad and loot the shit out of this castle before the regulars can." You say. "Just the nice stuff, please. I'm sure you know what I mean."

"Got it, sir." Ramirez salutes.

"Come on, Sam, let's see what your dad has in store for us." You sigh.

As you move down through the castle halls, you see that Castle Gassenarl truly has fallen. Gallian regulars flood the passages, herding GRA prisoners out to be processed. In the meantime, GRA banners are being torn down and replaced with the old Gallian ones. Ideally, the GRA banners would be burned to prevent them from falling back into GRA hands, but you seen a number of Gallian soldiers discreetly tucking them away instead. You don't say anything, of course. You would've done the same thing, honestly.

You follow General Wellings to his staff car, where he opens the door, and you see a very familiar face that you honestly never wanted to see again.

"Hello, Captain. It's been a long time." Colonel Lynch of the Albion Intelligence Services says with his typical emotionless tone.

"Okay, I'll hear what you have to say." You nod, carefully taking a seat across from Lynch in the staff car. Sam and her father take a seat inside as well. "Judging from your presence here, this is some cloak and dagger shit we're dealing with, aren't we?"

"You could say that." Lynch agrees. "What is your opinion on peace between the Federation and the Empire?"

"Bad business." You say without missing a beat.

"As expected from the mercenary." Lynch shakes his head. "This is currently the question that is dividing the Federation. Half the member states, particularly the border states on the frontlines, want peace, while the other half want to continue the war."

"And which side is Albion on?"

"Please, you should have figured that out by now, considering what would have happened to Albion if not for your assistance. In all seriousness though, Albion gains no benefit from the the continuation of this war. Maritime losses from Imperial interdictions on our shipping has caused endless economic damage to Albion. However, many other Federation nations DO profit from this war and would like to keep it that way."

"And this concerns us... how?"

"In one month, the Federation and the Empire will be organizing the very first peace conference since the the start of the war." Lynch reveals. "Despite your little civil war, it has been decided by both sides that the negotiations be held in Gallia due to its neutrality."

"I'm still trying to find the point in all of this." You say, tired of all of this exposition.

"Straight to the point, as always." Lynch sighs. "There is evidence to suggest that the current President of the Federation, President Harling, may be assassinated during the conference."

"By the Imperials?" Sam gasps.

"Worse, by the Federation."

"What, just to keep the war going?" She frowns.

(cont)
>>
>>25985175
"Exactly." Lynch nods. However, his expression still betrays nothing. "If Harling's enemies, and there are many of them, can get him killed and find a way to blame the Imperials for it, that will guarantee a continuation of the war."

"And, what, you want us to run a protection detail for him?" You ask, already connecting the dots.

"Correct. I've already arranged things with General Wellings here, who is being put in charge of security for the event."

"Does the Archduchess know?"

"Of course she does." General Wellings nods. "But like me and Lynch, she feels this threat must be dealt with discreetly. You are going to protect Harling at all costs, without giving yourselves away that we're aware of any specific plot."

"Well, I'll keep that in mind." You say as you exit the car along with Sam.

"Okay Sam, I need your opinion on this." You sigh, wishing Lynch never showed his damn face here.

"I'm not sure, I'm kind of used to it by now, and there's always going to be someone bad who needs to be shot.

And there's the rest of the Demons, what about them. They're family now, I can't exactly just abandon them.

But retirement with you does seem nice.

Also, I wanted to consult with you on how much we can get out of Lynch for this, fucker totally underpaid us for Albion."

Jager seems the type to keep going for a while after karla. But I think he would stop 3-4 years later and retire then. After all he can't constantly risk sam and feel happy about it.

Too bad no one will vote for it because a bunch of people want to keep on killing people and everyone else is scrambling to prevent it.

Yeah. This. Kind of why I think he would stay merc but only for 2-3 years then retire with what he saved up..or better said start his own merc company and sit at home raking in cash. If the war ends the work wouldn't pay as much but also wouldn't be as high.

Mercing is kind of a dumb career choice when you're a noble who will likely get some substantial political sway after all this. Just keep the Demons on as a militia.

"To be honest, I've grown rather fond of the mercenary lifestyle." You admit, looking up to the night sky. "I mean, I really think we've got a good thing going here with the Demons. I mean, you've got to admit, we're a pretty tight, if a bit dysfunctional, family, aren't we?"

"That's true..." Sam frowns. "But is it really worth when a day's work involves dodging bullets in some warzone nobody cares about?"

Mean more retire and build up from home. Using the demons name as badasses to rake in cash and new recruits. So saying start is a tad off my meaning but I'm slightly tired at the moment so don't mind me.

>>25985934
If he did do this I"m thinking he would give them everything they need. Best equipment he can buy. Best training. Everything. He won't be sitting behind a desk he will be out there helping them though any method he can. But won't go on the front lines and risk dying or sam dying unless he has too. That and by that point the war might be over and done with so the danger levels drop massively.

Hell he would be one of the best bosses ever actually because he knows his shit unlike most nobles. So he would be saving lives though sitting at a desk making sure his mercs are in good shape.

"Then it's settled. We'll take the mission." You say.

And with that, the next month seems to fly by in a flurry of activity. You would've thought with that much time, you'd be able to get some rest and relaxation, but you were wrong. Horribly horribly wrong. When you're not studying Castle Randgriz's floorplans, you're analyzing the guest list to look for anybody suspicious, or you're training the Demons on how to handle VIP protection properly, or you're getting berated by Grandma for one reason or another. It's just lots and lots of work to take care of.

Well, at least you've got Sam helping you out. Sharing the workload (and a few other things) certainly helped keep your sanity intact

Meanwhile, Grandma was having a grand old time preparing for the conference. Like the ones before it, this conference was also going to double as one of those stuffy noble get togethers, essentially making it a ballroom event. Grandma loved parties, as they were good ways to forge connections and curry favors. You have a good idea on who Grandma is planning to talk to, considering the Archduchess herself would be attending the event as an observer and mediator.

"Ah, Jager, it's good that I found you." Your Grandmother silently files in. "You've forgotten about the party invitations! After all, you should be attending the event yourself as well!"

You wince. Inside the ballroom itself, weapons were strictly prohibited, so your options in terms of firepower would be limited. However, considering you'd need people close to Harling to keep him protected, at least one person had to go in.

Well, the reason .50 BMG is so good for extreme distance work is pure ballistics. It's a very fast round, so it covers the distance quickly and with minimal drop. And it's a very heavy round, so the wind doesn't affect it as much. Also good for shooting through big fancy windows due to the mass giving it inertia like a motherfucker.

Well we protect those we care about.

"Understandable." Grandma nods. "I'll have to get them sized so we can be sure they have the appropriate attire. Does Sam have an evening gown?"

"Um, not that I can recall." You say.

I don't think we have a say on who goes or not. If the Imps say the Belkans go, they go. Otherwise, this peace conference is a dud.

I think Jager can control his knight-punching properly. Though I guess if Karla decides to come...well, I don't know anymore. I'm hoping he stays professional.
>>
>>25987725
I know we can't overtly influence the guest list, but I'd hope that the position we were given would at least give us some push on that front. The way I read it, it sounds more like a "We sorta want peace, so we'll try this shit. If it works, neat. If it doesn't, well, we tried" sort of thing. Basically being hopeful...and not being hopeful at the same time.
>>
>>25987888
Neither the Hawkish factions within the federation nor the hawkish factions within the Empire actually want peace...I suspect it is that these factions that currently have the power...
>>
>>25987907
If they currently had power there wouldn't even be a conference. I think its more of a political deadlock between the peace faction and the war faction.
>>
>>25987866
They tested that, the bull didn't damage anything.
>>
>>25987944
You always gotta make it look like you're seeking an advantageous peace...especially to a populace that is probably tired of this shit. Considering neither faction really has an overwhelming force, I'd still guess that this is all an act by the factions that want to say "STILL WAR BUT WE TRIED"

"Okay, I've got a couple of names here." Elizabeth says.

PERRAULT: The Perraults own a number of arms factories all across Europa, and produce everything from rifles to tanks. They are large supporters of the war.

HAMILTON: The Hamiltons are an old military family, with the proud distinction (or curse, depending on your point of view) of having at least one family member fall in battle in ever major Europan war. Ultra-nationalist to the core, they firmly believe in the Federation's superiority over the Empire.

NIKANOR: The Prime Minister of Yuktobania, Nikanor is on of the loudest voices for peace, considering his nation is bearing the biggest brunt of the Imperial attacks. Holds close diplomatic ties with President Harling and one of his closest supporters.

HARLING: President Harling was formerly the president of Osea before being selected to be the President of the Federation. Initially believed to be a lame duck who wouldn't accomplish anything in office (which some theorized is why he was selected in the first place), Harling proved his opponents wrong by instituting many reforms, including promoting Darcsen civil rights and curbing runaway military spending. Currently opposes the war against the Empire.

THE EMPEROR: Due to the custom of adopting the title of Emperor as the one and only name, the Emperor's true name has been lost to the ages. What is known, however, is that he has been ruling the Empire for a very long time, and is well over sixty or seventy years old. While he undoubtedly sanctioned the start of EWII, his current position on the war is unknown since it was likely he believed that there would be a quick and decisive end to the war.

"Uh.... uh oh." Elizabeth frowns. "You aren't going to like this..."

"What is it?" You say, you frown.

She pulls out the invite list, the latest one, and circles one name on it.

>>
Hmm, what to do about this. On one hand I'd rather not pussy-foot around and actively distance ourselves from Sam to avoid Karla knowing, but on the other I'd rather not run into Karla at all if it can be avoided.

I'd say stick close to Sam and try to keep out of Karla's way for the party. If she finds us(which she probably will) she can find out too. I don't want want to be stuck in a one-on-one situation with her right now.
>>
>>25988363

it was bound to happen, I wonder if Karla still has idle hope about Jager.
>>
>>25988621
It would be a bit presumptuous of her but she probably does somewhere just like Jager did under all that vengeance until recently. Either way, it's going to be gone soon. Or she'll go full denial and enter Yandere mode. Or go full despair and enter main villain mode.

Basically, what I'm saying is that I'd like some closure and making amends between the two and for this situation to be handled maturely, it's probably not going to happen until we punch her back into thinking reasonably.
>>
>>25988589
and put off the inevitable?

man up and confront her, get it over and done with
>>
>>25988363
Ha. So close, yet so far. Almost made it to the point where Karla would have had some time to explain herself and maybe not have run that race with 4 broken limbs.

Too bad, I suppose. Cowards went for safe and cute. Two possible outcomes. 1) Karla simply gives up. Snake Eater scenario, except it's no comfort with Sam sneering at her. You do like to be cruel, Jaeger. 2) She goes completely homicidal. Hope you like losing everything, AGAIN, if Karla goes on a suicide run on Stormfuhrer Castle.

Or distant 3) She shrugs it off. But that isn't really quest material.

You have crushed her dreams and hopes, just as she did yours. Are you even yet, Jaeger?

Also anyone's paranoia senses tingling about being a Merc Company protecting a Politician at a peace conference? Doubt Welling's would set us up but Lynch?
>>
>>25988723
That whole conversation had her sounding way too confident. If she does still have hope then she seems to really believe she can just do that and have everything come out fine in the end. Which is kind of a really messed up perspective to have.

>>
>>25988760
honestly, he is not making it sound like that, but its a moot point anyway
>>
>>25988757
I picked it because I thought it was the right decision, not the safe one. I wasn't really rooting for Karla at any point, though.

>>25988771
He's still being bitter as fuck. He called a bunch of people cowards, made Sam seem like a total jerk, and made it out like Jager is actively trying to hurt her for what she did instead of moving on with his life and getting some happiness back.
>>
>>25988771
Then what did he mean? That Sam was the coward's choice? Are you really surprised that people picked the girl who was nothing short of a godsend to us from the start? Over the girl who, I dunno, murdered Jaeger's parents? No, seriously, I would really like to know.
>>
whatever happens, Karla has to answer for her deeds.
I would prefer a less violent solution.

>>25988801

I was hoping we'd at least resolve the betrayal before jumping in to another relationship and i was kinda hoping we could patch things up with Karla.

I don't resent the fact that people chose Sam, she's been nothing but great to work with in our time together and actually gave Jager a little bit of joy back in his life.

Still a bit curious how everything would have turned out if we declined Sam but that's not something to discuss while the quest is still running.
>>
>>25988858
A handful of people might not like Karla, but I don't think they'd want to outright kill her either. Unless she forces us to do it, we won't. Or at least, that's what I want to believe.
>>
>>25988858
Oh, I want to settle it as maturely as possible too. My game plan right now is basically to just tell her outright and be as polite and as un-angry as possible.

Also, yeah. I get wanting to wait to resolve, but the way I saw the choice was developing Jager's character into someone who can finally make a step towards a resolution. I didn't want to pass up an actual breakthrough and a good thing for him just because he wouldn't be 100%. Hell, no one is hardly ever 100%.
>>
>>25988881
We don't want her dead, Hell her being alive would be the best thing for her country and best thing for the setting as the Empire would be weaker. If she gives us no options, shes done.

>Hell, no one is hardly ever 100%.

I poked at the mass of voters to see what would come out. Using an extreme as a basis was convenient to quickly get a reaction. To be fair, considering the amounts of pressures put upon her, an extreme reaction is possible.

Lots of "you're trying too hard to be edgy" came out, it turns out. Disappointing that no one engaged the scenario fully or considered every factor, but the actual confrontation should be more enlightening.
