Okay, due to some last minute business, my response times are going to be delayed for the first couple hours or so, but I'm going to get this started regardless. Time for VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest
Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/BxU7VTKr

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You first arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, and figh off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher.

You then moved on to Ustio, where you helped the beleaguered defenders fend off an Imperial offensive and stage a counterattack. While there, you also took care of a personal mission for Qyburn, got a new weapon called the Buzzbomb, recruited some new squad members, and helped Isolde regain her honor by defeating the Knight leading the Imperial forces in the area, breaking the back of the Imperial offensive.

You then returned to Gallia to help the Loyalists fight the GRA and rescue Archduchess Cordelia. You also finally decided to move on from your past and start a relationship with your longtime friend and XO, Sam.

Currently, you are now at Randgriz Castle, attending the first Europan War II Federation/Imperial Peace Conference. You shift uncomfortably, not used to wearing your military dress uniform. You never liked the damn thing, but protocol demanded that you wear it. At least with this getup you were able to bring in your "ceremonial" saber in addition to the knife and pistol hidden on your person. Thanks to General Wellings, you and your infiltration team were allowed to bring in weapons as long as they were concealed.

Sam, on the other hand, is nothing short of stunning. Grandma really did know how to get a dress done. You never did realize she looked so good in white, and you've often had to make sure you weren't staring at her for too long.

Meanwhile, Heloise and Tarin opted for black nightgowns, Ramirez was in a standard suit (which he looked just as uncomfortable wearing as you are), Isolde is in a military dress uniform, and Elizabeth is disguised as one of the waitstaff (not a maid, unfortunately. Cordelia did have standards, after all).

You all pass by the security checkpoint without issue, getting some quick winks from the guards as they "forget" to properly pat you down for weapons. General Wellings himself is there as well, keeping an eye on things.

"So.... I heard Karla was going to be here." Sam whispers to you. "What are you going to do?"

>Avoid her like the plague.

Keep in mind Karla may be in on the attempt to sabotage the peace talks. A truce with the Empire would basically kill any chance of sovereignty Belka has left after all.

"Okay." Sam nods. "Just remember I'm here to back you up."

"Thanks."

You then begin to scan the crowd, trying to pick out your targets.

She's definitely trying to get Belka's independence. That is, from what I can tell, the primary goal. Of course, if the Empire is weakened by war she has a greater chance. So she might be involved. However, if she can get some deal with the Federation, she may be able to get out of the Empire through the peace deal. But that might mean just switching sides over sovereignty. Who knows, it could really go either way.

In the crowd, you can only pick out the major players. Harling, the Emperor, and Nikanor, with their extensive entourages. You could probably go up to them effortlessly, but you also need to find other groups of interest as well.

>Oksy, now time to divy up duties! You can hit it up with one of the VIPs, do prorection duty, float through the party, investigate something, or hit up the bar. You got yourself, Sam, Tarin, Heloise, Ramirez, Elizabeth, and Isolde.

Question about the investigate something... Do we state what to investigate? If not, just put Tarin on. Otherwise I have no idea.
>>

Tarin and Ramirez for Protection
Elizabeth and Heliose for investigation, look for suspicious people
We go with Sam to float through the party
Isolde can talk with the VIPs
>>

Tarin and Liz look for points they would infiltrate from if they had to sneak it. Everyone else picks a VIP and keeps close.

This. Use the sneaks to looks for sneaks. Use the people with good social skills, Sam and Isolde, to chat up the party, while Ramirez and Jager stay in reserve to respond to any trouble quickly.
>>
>Challenge the Emperor to a high stakes poker match.

On a more serious note, anyone else suspicious about Harling - not like he'll be pulling the trigger but...
>>
>>25998742
And Heloise takes bar
>>
>>25998753
>HARLING: President Harling was formerly the president of Osea before being selected to be the President of the Federation. Initially believed to be a lame duck who wouldn't accomplish anything in office (which some theorized is why he was selected in the first place), Harling proved his opponents wrong by instituting many reforms, including promoting Darcsen civil rights and curbing runaway military spending. Currently opposes the war against the Empire.

Our main concerns are Perrault and Hamilton from what I can tell.

>PERRAULT: The Perraults own a number of arms factories all across Europa, and produce everything from rifles to tanks. They are large supporters of the war.

>HAMILTON: The Hamiltons are an old military family, with the proud distinction (or curse, depending on your point of view) of having at least one family member fall in battle in ever major Europan war. Ultra-nationalist to the core, they firmly believe in the Federation's superiority over the Empire.

Maybe the Emperor too since his opinion is largely unknown.
>>
>>25998831
Maybe...
>>
The Hamiltons and Perraults are the ones most likely to be fucking things up and they aren't here (or we just can't see them).

>>
>>25998856
We didn't get the best roll. It makes sense that we wouldn't find our main suspects. Also, Karla could be either or. Assassination isn't a Belkan thing but it would make sense if they wanted to support the war to weaken the Empire and gain sovereignty

>>25998873
Harling is the target.

>>
>>25998871
We're not in his castle, we're in Randgriz.

>>25998897
They want to keep the war going, one way or the other.

I don't think they really care what happens so long as the Federation and Empire still hate each other.
>>
>>25998919
Our mission is literally to guard Harling from an assassination attempt. What are you on about?
>>
>>25998930

>>
>>25998621

Ramirez, Tarin, and Isolde pull protection.
Elizabeth tries to sniff for clues.
Heloise checks out the bar.

Primary suspect in my book is the ultra-Right family mentioned last time. Obviously they're not gonna go Sic Semper Tyranis, because that's silly, but that's probably where the attacks are getting their money from. There's probably bonus points if they can pin it on a Darcsen, so let's see if we can't keep regular humans on hover-round detail.

Also, avoid Karla like the fucking plague, as that will lead to distractions (for the assassin to take advantage of) and drama.
>>
>>25998957
Now you're just being paranoid. What if we stretch ourselves too thin and fail our primary goal? The Emperor has his own men to protect him, and the rest won't incite the war like those two would.
>>

Ya'll know Nikanor could be a suspect even if he is chummy with Harling. Gotta suspect everyone, gotta plan for the worse.

Highly doubt Lynch would try to fuck us over... too hard.

I mean, he did tell us about this.

Also...

I'd imagine the Perraults are more interested in money than anything else. And that they'd pull off something silly like "MAN CARD" and "BULLETFUCKER 4600" than assassinate Harling.

The Hamiltons, though...who knows?

Tarin and Ramirez both pose(?) as a couple and move their way over to Harling and Nikanor, who appear to be in a heated, but friendly, debate. Isolde actually manages to start chatting it up with the Emperor himself, which you find highly ironic considering she's technically a traitor to the Empire and all.Though the fact she was infinitely more attractive than the women in his entourage probably helped.

Elizabeth starts chatting it up with her new friend Elise.

Heloise meanders off tko the bar to try and grab intel from the assorted folk there.

"Shall we?" You say, taking Sam's hand.

I don't think violence or setting anything on fire would be prudent. Not only does it have a chance of souring the peace conference, but it might also cause confusion that an assassin would exploit.

Interrupting the band has potential.

Also, what about getting the crowd to participate in something? We are in a ballroom. A single minded individual with one objective would get visibly agitated if kept occupied with something else.

We may be looking for a Travis Bickle
>>
>>25999659
You begin to home in on Elizabeth, feigning taking one of those fancy little cheeses on a stick.

"Find anything?" You ask.

"Well," Elizabeth whispers to you. "There's a lot of new waitstaff due to the size of this event. Plenty of opportunity to get a man, even a whole team, in."

"Shit." You breathe. "How would they do it?"

"Well, if they adhere to the curriculum Lynch set up, the perfect assassin would do the job up close, to confirm the kill. The most dangerous ones do it with no intention of escaping."

"That's... unsettling. Keep digging, alright?"

"Roger."

You then move off to the bar. Unfortunately, you see Heloise isn't doing much recon as she is flirting, with one person in particular. Even more unfortunately, the kid's wearing Belkan heraldry...

"Aw, that's so sweet." Sam says. "Besides, you know, him being an Imperial and all..."

"It's only going to end in tears." You shake your head.

"If only I could believe you that much." You sigh. "Come on, let's go see how bad it is."

As you draw closer, you can see Heloise and the Belkan squire hitting it off pretty good. They're talking about economics, of all things. You can't even begin to comprehend how they enjoy talking about that stuff.

"Heloise! How are things going?" You say, trying to keep a smile on your face.

"Well, there's the Grand Master and Princess of Belkla, Karla Hohenzollern, who's probably the best knight in the world." Williams nods. "And with her is the second greatest knight ever, Sir Erik Schnee, the Phoenix Knight!"

"The Phoenix Knight?" You ask,. You've heard a bit about him, but nothing concrete.

"Oh yeah, he's like, one of the most hardcore knights in Belka. He's fought in the most battles, is nearly undefeated, and literally can never die."

"You know, I was wondering." You say, sipping your drink casually. "You don't get many opportunities to ask the President of the Federation himself, but how has the overall war been going, and how do you feel about it? You don't have to tell me anything secret or anything."

"To put it honestly? The whole thing is a mess." Harling sighs. "We're currently stalemated at the Round Table, which changes hands almost daily. It's one of the few effective routes to push into the Empire, so naturally both sides want it. We lose thousands of good men every day."

"So I take it you're not a big supporter of the war."

"It doesn't take a genius to realize that. Half the Federation is out for my head." Harling laughs lightly. "What gain do we have continuing this war? We've already pushed the Imperials well past our original borders. Unfortunately, many powerful men disagree with my views."

"I heard." You nod. "Such as Perrault and Hamilton?"

"Oh yes, them." Harling sighs. "Perrault is at least somewhat bearable. He's a businessman through and through, which makes him somewhat predictable. He'll go with the path that gives him the most profit. Hamilton? He's a pure fanatic. Impossible to reason with, really."

"So what are the chances of peace?" Sam asks.

"With Nikanor's support? I think we can get something tangible within the year. Not by the end of this peace conference, of course, but getting through this conference would put the foot in the door."

"And how about he Emperor? What's your opinion on him?" You ask, motioning to the elderly man, confined to a large, mobile and very ornate throne, who's still hitting it up with Isolde.

"He's a very pragmatic man, is all I can say." Harling frowns. "Now that his forces have lost the initiative, he knows he's not going to get an upper hand in this war. He might not be a big believer in peace, but I think we can convince him to put an end to this war."

You and Sam scan the various waitstaff. Having both been in the military for some time, it's easy for you to pick out signs of rigorous military training. It was little things, like posture, the way they walked, even the way they held simple items. You and Sam see at least four of the waitstaff who walked a bit too stiffly, like they were on edge, and had tight, mechanical movements that suggested they were heavily drilled and practiced, rather than naturally learned.

"Okay, the waitstaff is definitely compromised." You whisper.

"Yeah, that's just the ones out in the ballroom. What about the rest behind the scenes?"

"Yeah..."

But before the two of you can do anything else, a white haired, purple eyed figure appears in front of you, and you instantly freeze up, your mind and heart screeching to a halt.

"It's... good to see you two." You say rather coldly. You still haven't forgotten what she did. You then turn to her companion. "And this is Sir Erik Schnee, I suppose?"

The knight nods, but remains wordless.

Karla is smiling, but you can tell it's partly forced, especially after the cold reception you gave her, though you knew she had to be expecting that. She look s a bit apologetic, until she eyes Sam at your side and her expression morphs to curiosity.

"And who would this be?"

"This is Samantha Wellings." You say, tightening your grip on Sam's hand. "My girlfriend."

"I... I see." Karla says. For a brief second, you think you can see her crestfallen, but it disappears fast enough that you're not sure it was real or not. You can also feel Sam's grip on your hand tightening. You're pretty sure being confronted by your old flame has made her incredibly anxious.

"I need to go, but first, I need to ask you something." You say quietly. "Just tell me why, Karla. Why did you destroy my life? Don't give me that bullcrap you gave me before. I know there's more to it than that."

"You're right. It was more than duty." Karla says, regaining her composure. "Everything I did, I did for Belka. My nation stands at a crossroads. Whether it rises to glory or falls to ruin hinges on everything I do, even now."

"Well, good luck with that." You say, pulling Sam away. "Go play your little game of politics, but leave me out of it. You may have taken everything from me once before, but I sure as hell won't let that happen again."

"You would threaten Milady!?" Schnee steps forward angrily.

"Stop." Karla commands. "It's obvious Jager here has more pressing business to attend to. Let us not bother him."

Schnee gives you a glare, but he does nothing.

"Samantha, a word of advice from one woman to another." Karla says, turning away. "Don't do anything to hurt Jager. He's... he's already been hurt enough."

And with that, Karla and her bodyguard disappear into the crowd. You're honestly not too sure what just happened here, but you feel... free, like a weight was off your shoulders. With that conversation, you've finally cut all ties with Karla and your past. It was over.

Then you remember that you've still got a mission. Those assassins would need to be taken out.

You decide to do a switch up, putting Heloise on protection duty with Ramirez and Isolde while taking Tarin and Elizabeth with you.

Currently, there's four of you, and four targets on the ballroom floor. Now all you have to do is figure out how to take them out quickly and quietly. Well, if things did go bad, you had Alek outside ready to provide sniper support, but that's honestly a huge last resort.

"Okay, we have to do this quick and quiet." You whisper. "We're going to have to take these guys out all at once so that they won't catch on."

"What if there are more?" Tarin asks.

"We'll worry about that when the time comes." You say. "You've all got your assignments."

With that, Tarin and Elizabeth each choose a target to lock on to and split off. Meanwhile, the last two targets are are rather close together, meaning you and Sam can take them out together, hopefully. Fortunately for you, they're doing their best to stay unnoticed. No doubt waiting for a chance to strike. You and Sam try to move up to get closer to them.

Unfortunately, you look over to Sam and see shes not doing so well. She's locked in a bit of a silent struggle with her assassin, but you can clearly see he's gaining the upper hand and leading her to a more isolated corner of the ballroom.

The assassin wheezes and collapses to the ground.

"Are you okay?" You ask Sam.

"Y-yeah. Just need to catch me breath." Sam sighs. "Tarin and Elizabeth make it look so easy!"

"Make what look easy?" Tarin says as she appears behind you, Elizabeth in tow.

"I suppose that means you took out your targets?" You ask.

So with this thread I think I've finally figured out how I feel about Karla as a character.

To me, her main problem is that she was thinking too much in the big picture and not at all realistically. From how she said goodbye to us after attacking our home to how she greeted us today, she's exhibited that she has a sort of expectation that everything is or will be alright even though she's privately shown guilt and understanding over her actions. She was too deep in plans and wasn't considering Jager's feelings at all. She attacked his home for Belka's sake and completely assumed everything would come out alright in the end, probably because she planned to get back with him after it was all said in over. She completely lost sight of a person's own feelings in favor of a bigger picture where sacrifices had to be made, one of those sacrifices being Jager's home. I think Karla honestly needed to be rejected by Jager to grow as a character and really could have gone a lot worse for her. She could have got a Var through her chest.

It was vengeance over being betrayed by a loved one. I think trusting another human being enough to date them after that kind of thing happening is a big sign that he was at least a big portion of the way over getting over the betrayal. Also, he got his house and a family member back. His life may have been different, but he basically regained what was lost.

As good a time as any to start a shitstorm/go full KIDF/engage in serious discusion.

In my opinion she's very aware that her actions have torpedoed her chances to have something resembling a personal life, that cannot be more clear than in the Chapter with Schnee. I get the feeling she knew all along that her loyalty would be tested and her personal feelings on the matter would need to be cast aside; I wonder if anon spent some time wondering about how that affected Karla.
Is it really so damning for her to harbour some vain hope that someone out there who didn't know her as a commander, as a princess or as a protector would still be able to understand her? Her actions at those junctures mentioned showed some of that naivete. For me at least Karla's predicament is interesting enough and I disagree, Karla's character would have developed with either Jager's rejection or forgiveness regardless.

Polite sage for stuff that ought to be kept to other threads.

I didn't see that chapter with Erik as all that telling of complete remorse, more that she had an understanding of what she had done. I personally see it the way I do because the guilt was only private and she never showed any of it to Jager until after she finally knew she lost him. That seems evidence of more a nagging doubt over an actual acknowledgement. If she truly understood her actions consequences and was holding on to hope, she would have acted a lot more apprehensive with Jager.

>>26005300

>>
>>26005300
As Elizabeth drags off her prisoner, with Tarin assisting her, you and Sam decide to investigate the rest of the waitstaff. However, this was going to involve going into the back service corridors, which bordered the ballroom so that they would have access to any point of the room. Now that you think about it, it was a painfully obvious advantage that any potential assassin would love to use.

You and Sam discreetly make your way to one of the service entrances, which the servants use to get from the ballroom to the kitchen in to restock their trays. Actually, you don't even have to go in. You've just got to stick near the the entrance.

"How are we going to stay here without arousing suspicion?" Sam asks.

"Simple." You grin, You then push her against the wall and begin passionately kissing her.

Yep, you were going to be posing(?) as an overly horny couple.

Occams razor does agree with that assessment, but I'm of the opinion it was necessary she present a front especially at a peace conference that could in part make or break her own plans. I mean I'll not argue Jager should've chosen differently I don't think either of us are discussing that point, but we ourselves havn't even gotten more than 2 instances prior to the current encounter where we've seen Karla and any interactions with her. In front of Jager whilst leading an attack into hostile territory and again addressing one of her knights. As I said as far as we are aware Jager is literally the only non-formal relationship she had, I get the feeling she's a leader first, a person second and as such you wouldn't and shouldn't see much of her personal feelings.
But hey that might be me reading too far into it so take it as you will.

...so, it's either we suck so bad at kissing that our saboteurs manage to slip by us, or Karla comes over and sees our little show.
>>
>>26005568
Nope. Sam pushes us off completely afraid or some such...

As you and Sam perform your impromptu makeout session you both (hopefully) are keeping an eye on the waitstaff that pass through, keeping an eye out for the the same signs as last time. Unfortunately, they're passing by so fast that you're having trouble picking them out. However, you then start hearing a pair of muffled voices around the corner. It sounded at least two individuals were in a heated argument.

"Alphas 1 through 4 aren't responding. I can't get into contact with any of them. Plus, I can't find them on the floor." One gruff voice grumbles.

"Shit. You think they found out?"

"Dunno. If they did, they'd have called this whole thing off already."

"You think it might have something to do with the Demons? I don't see any other reason why they'd be here."

"Maybe. We'll play it safe and get rid of them. We can take out the target once they're all eliminated."

Then you see a waiter walk out of the entrance towards the ballroom. His accomplice presumably went back into the service halls to spread the order. The waiter stops for a second and looks your way. Suddenly, realization dawns on his face when he recognizes the both of you and you see his arm instinctively reaching for something...

The world seems to slow down, due to the combat high. You can almost see every little motion, every little detail. You can see the waiter's clothes and muscles rippling in the air as he reaches for the concealed handgun, well polished and oiled, and obvious Imperial make. You even see the mixture of fear, surprise, and anger on his face as he figures you're the ones trying to foil his plans.

Thankfully, the combat high means that your reflexes are going into overdrive, giving you the chance to steal the initiative.

Both you and Sam move, as if you were one single entity. You reach out to grab the assassin's gun hand while Sam moves to tackle him. You seize the assassin's wrist and give it a sharp twist, and he cries out in pain and drops the weapon. Sam slams her shoulder in the assassin's gut and sends him slamming into the wall.

My God, the reason for this is so obvious it's not funny.

They're obviously trying to blame the Alliance.

In the ensuing struggle, you see a second waiter arriving through the door and sees both you and Sam struggling with the assassin. Much to your dismay, instead of running away or doing anything a regular civilian would, this waiter draws his pistol and aims it at you. You only have a few brief seconds, but you push Sam to the side, pull the assassin off the wall, and put him between you and the second assassin, acting as an impromptu shield. The second assassin fires three rounds, but they're absorbed by the body of the first assassin. You slam the body of the first assassin into the second, and then kick him in the face as he tries to get up, knocking him out cold.

Unfortunately, EVERYBODY in the ballroom heard the gunshots. And they're all staring in the direction they came from, where they see you standing over the bodies of two waiters.

"I can totally explain this." You say.

Good thing we got that other waiter being interrogated. We should have enough evidence to pin this on whoever did this right here in public.

Welp. Grandma Sturmfuhrer is definitely going to have no problems achieving her goals for this party after we pull this off.

The Sturmfuhrer Estate is going to be a fucking political beast after this war is over.
