A bit late, but we're still good for VALKRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest
Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/Jr8bbA3L

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You first arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, and figh off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher.

You then moved on to Ustio, where you helped the beleaguered defenders fend off an Imperial offensive and stage a counterattack ending with the defeat of the Knight leading the Imperial forces in the area, breaking the back of the Imperial offensive.

You then returned to Gallia to help the Loyalists fight the GRA and rescue Archduchess Cordelia. You also finally decided to move on from your past and start a relationship with your longtime friend and XO, Sam. Now, you've been recruited by Lynch to destroy two Valkrur superweapons. You already managed to destroy Stonehenge, and all that is left is Excalibur.

Oh, and you asked Sam to marry you, and she accepted. Nothing possibly bad can happen from this, right?

You're now participating in the Federations offensive into Belka, in an attempt to take pressure off the main offensive in the Round Table, as well as destroy Excalibur.

Unfortunately, the Belkans aren't exactly going to let you waltz into their home and wreck their stuff. At least not without a fight. You've managed to penetrate the Belkan border and make some good headway into the county itself, and you're near your first objective, the town of Fardan.

Already, the Belkans are scrambling to organize a response force to counter your push. You can see at least two or three companies worth of armor massing outside the town, every individual tank painted in bright heraldry and iconography.

The Federation forces pause for a brief second. Even though they were veterans, compared to the fighting prowess of the Belkan Knights, they might as well be green recruits. No Federation force had ever gone head to head against an equal force of Knights and won, at least not without serious losses.

"Plan, sir?" Julia asks, Fenrir's engines rumbling anticipation.

I think that's liable to get us shot in the face by an Imperial, non-Belkan sniper. Or Imperial, non-Belkan tank. Or something else bad.

>>

"Even I know when a plan is too stupid to work." You frown. "Julia, Headcase, we're going to hold position here. I want everybody else to disembark from the Growler and get to cover. Try and take out any tanks if you can, but don't take any big risks."

"Risk? I don't even know what that word means." Ramirez says confidently.

"Ha ha, you know what I mean."

"Okay, so who's day are we going to ruin?" Julia asks, just itching to fire off her 122mm cannon again.

You gaze into the distance. There's a LOT of tanks to choose from. At this range, a 76 or even an 88mm gun would have trouble hitting, much less punching through front armor, but you've got a 122mm...

Taking out a knight would certainly be a big morale boost. Taking out a knight in one of the heaviest Imp tanks would be a HUGE morale boost.

You scan the armor line for targets, and you find the perfect one. It's a big, gaudy thing, looking like all of its armor plating was replaced with gold and making it shine like a miniature second sun. If anything, you had to destroy it for sensible tank designs everywhere.

"Julia, see that big shiny fucker over there? End him, please."

"With pleasure." Julia says with a predatory grin.

"Hey guys, don't leave me out!" Headcase says, turning his vehicle to target the gold tank as well.

With a deafening boom, the Fenrir's 122mm cannon hurls its deadly payload across the field, breaking the awkward silence between the two opposing forces. It's followed a split second later by Kilroy's smaller, but no less intense cannon report. Both shells fly through the air towards the gold tank.

However, over this distance, even the best gunner can have a bit of difficulty. Julia's shot arcs through the air, but it's clear she aimed a tad bit too low. The shell impacts directly on the tank's front plate, causing the entire vehicle to shudder, but it otherwise looks intact. Headcase's round follows up, striking the turret and shearing the main cannon off. And then something happens nobody expects.

The tank goes into reverse.

The effect is immediate. Spurred on, the Federation tankers start firing as well, showering the Belkan line with shells and explosions, You even see a few light and medium tanks get blown apart in the barrage. The Belkans, realizing they just had the initiative stolen from them, start firing back as well and the whole thing starts turning into a slugfest.

You're left wondering what to do now.

The medium tanks fire first. One of them, a tank painted in reds and blues, takes a shot, but he misjudges just how fast the Fenrir is and the shell lands harmlessly behind the tank, showering you with dirt and grass. The second one, a tank painted white with a green trim, is a bit luckier, bounding a shell off the Fenrir's front armor, causing the entire vehicle to shudder and your teeth to chatter.

Julia's reply is short and to the point. The 122mm cannon booms and suddenly the red and blue tank just disappears in a cloud of smoke and dirt. When the dust settles, all that's left is a crater flanked by a pair of burning treads.

"Wait up, Sam, we'll catch up to you." You say, motioning for Julia to make a beeline for the town. In the distance, you can hear Headcase's cannon continue to boom, and you see quite a few burning tank carcasses to show for it. You're now too far to really be able to see the main battle, but the constant explosions and cannon reports indicate it's still going fiercely. Fortunately for you, it seems like those two medium tanks were trying to glory hog, and didn't report your position to the rest of the army.

You see the Growler and the rest of the Demons huddled up inside a drainage ditch just outside the town. The see you approach and wave you down.

"So what's the situation?" You ask.

"No contact so far. They probably didn't have a lot of time to dig in, but we can't discount the possibility of Imps inside the town ready to ambush." Sam says.

"Whatever the case, there don't seem to be any watching the perimeter." Tarin points out.

"That could just mean they're not expecting us to be here so soon." Heloise shrugs.

>The medium tank again manages to fire first, but due to some weird twist of fate, the shell actually bounces off the front of Fenrir's armor, and ricochets directly back at the tank that fired it with enough force to dent its turret in.
Shit, this actually happened to me once at the archery range. The targets have metal shutters that cover them when not in use to keep out the rain. Well I missed the target, my arrow hit one of the hinges and went *SKPANG* and came flying back at me end first.

"Okay, we'll take the town. That'll be sure to put a red hot poker up their asses." You nod. You then survey the town yourself for a bit. It's nothing too special, just a rather large town of probably a few thousand people. Old brick and mortar, with small narrow streets that were never designed to handle tanks rolling through them.

>The pact with the Nazis bearing Molotov's name, which secretly stated the Soviet intention to invade Finland in November 1939, was widely mocked by the Finns, as well as much of the propaganda Molotov produced to accompany it, including his declaration on Soviet state radio that bombing missions over Finland were actually airborne humanitarian food deliveries for their starving neighbors. The Finns, far from starving and engaged in a bitter war for national survival with the Soviet forces, sarcastically dubbed the Soviet cluster bombs "Molotov bread baskets" in reference to Molotov's propaganda broadcasts. When the hand-held bottle firebomb was developed to attack Soviet tanks, the Finns called it the "Molotov cocktail", as "a drink to go with the food".

And Molotovs stopped being effective against tanks once people realized how to protect their engines.

Tarin and Brillant silently creep down the street towards the town square. Something catches Brillant's eye and he whips to his right, rifle ready to fire.

In any other situation, Brillant's instincts would have been right on the money, considering he had an Imperial soldier set up in an ambush position right in sights. However, the only problem was that the Imp was already dead.

From an arrow in his skull.

In fact, the town was littered with Imp bodies, dead from various causes, not the least of which were bullets, stab wounds, and more arrows. You have a sneaking suspicion of what happened here.

"Jager, my man!" Jack Church's booming voice rings out.

Your squad instinctively raises their weapons and points the at the source of the sound. You see Jack waltzing out from a boarded up tavern with his customary longbow and broadsword. Behind him his fellow SOE operatives start quietly filtering out.

"Jack! What the hell is your pasty white Albian ass doing here?!" You say, hugging your brother in arms.

"Same as you, I imagine, killing Imps!" Jack laughs and winks. "Also, our mutual employer told me about your secret mission."

"So you're here to support us?" You ask.

"More or less." Jack shrugs. "We were inserted into Belka months before the invasion. We've been mapping out everything we can, keeping track of movements in and out of that mountain base they're keeping Excalibur in, regular spy stuff. When the big guns started shooting, we decided to help out by clearing out this town and taking out their commanders. Should've known that being in a nation full of knightly bastards, they'd all be on the frontlines."

"Yeah, Belkans tend to be a too honorable to trick sometimes." You laugh.

"Cap, we should probably like, go blow something up now." Sam sighs, poking you in the shoulder. "The battle's still going on.

"Right!" You nod and turn back to Jack. "You guys got anything that can crack tanks?"

"Jager, I was BORN to crack open tanks!" Jack grins.

You think on your options. On the one hand, you since you're mostly infantry heavy, you can try luring the Belkan armor into the town and ambush them here, but then you'd lose the element of surprise. On the other hand, you could push and just hit the Belkan armor from the rear. The only problem with that is if your infantry were caught in the open, they'd get blown to pieces.

Not the town.
The tanks.
Fire is one of the most effective ways to kill a tank, by cooking the crew alive inside, and that was the original purpose of molotovs (actually a Finnish invention, if you didn't know).

"Okay, we're going to turn this town into a killzone and draw in some Imps." You say, "I don't suppose you tapped into their comms?"

"Got the whole set sitting in the pub." Jack points to the tavern behind him.

"Good. Elizabeth, if the Belkans come calling, tell them you need reinforcements ASAP. That should get them scrambling."

"Got it, sir." You spy nods.

"Everybody else, get up in the buildings and get ready to rain some hell down. Julia, go pull on their tails a bit."

"Got it, sir."

Your squad then splits up along with Jack's men, taking positions on the upper floors of the surrounding buildings and shooing away any civilians you come across. Meanwhile, Julia inches Fenrir just out of the town, taking stock of the battle outside. The battle is still even matched, with sides slugging it out, though both sides have taken major losses. Those M5s were certainly helping the Feds hold their line. Even the Belkans were wary of their mighty 90mm cannons.

Julia takes aim at a nearby Heavy tank destroyer painted a dull ochre yellow. Julia coordinates with Headcase, who fires several shots at the Heavy TD to draw its attention. It slowly turns to face the threat, presenting its vulnerable rear to Julia.

Julia's parting shot manages to demolish an approaching medium tank, which is all she's willing risk before pulling back into the town. Meanwhile, some of yours and Jack's troops start firing their weapons wildly deeper in town, giving the impression there's still some Imperial resistance in the town.

Thinking their comrades are in need of help, the Belkan relief column simply charges straight in. By your count, there are three light tanks, five mediums, and three heavies with some light infantry support. Slowly but surely, the begin marching right into your prepared killzones. A quick drive by from the Fenrir causes the whole column to pause, which is just the moment you needed.

Grenades are are armed, molotov cocktails are set alight, and lances are aimed.

By now, the medium and light tanks are burning wrecks, having been finished off by the molotov cocktails. The crews inside had either long bailed our or were roasted alive. However, the larger and more insulted heavy tanks were able to shrug off the worst of it. Isolde manages to track one with her lance, but the last two begin gunning it in reverse.

"Come on, Jager, we can't let those bastards get away!" Jack says, picking up his broadsword.

"Wait, we're out of explosives, so how are we going to neutralize those tanks?" You ask.

"With this." Jack brings up his broadsword and grins. "You wouldn't believe the number of people who'd surrender to the sight of one."

"I don't know, you might just encourage them..." You mutter to yourself.

"Huh? You say something?" Jack asks.

"Nothing. So, we'll take one and you take the other?"

"Yeah, let's do it!"

You sprint for the rear most tank, leaping on to its side and clambering up the hatch. You see the coaxial machine gun spin to try and hit you, but being in this close, it doesn't have the angle to hit you. Meanwhile, Jack is standing in front of the other tank, waving his broadsword around and yelling curses. The tank then grinds to a halt, causing Jack to pause in surprise.

Then, the hatch flies open, and an armored figure climbs out, wielding a broadsword just as big as Jack's.

"Now that's what I'm talking about." Jack grins.

Meanwhile, your tank continues to try and break away.

Unfortunately, the tank simply has too much of a head start and you fail to catch it. The tank manages to clear the town, and fires off one last cannon shot in your direction in spite. You duck to the ground as the shell slams into the house behind you, showering you with dust and bricks.

Meanwhile, you can hear the clanging of steel against steel. Looking behind you, you see Jack locked into a life or death struggle with the Belkan knight. They both look like they're off in their own words. Jack reveling in his love for fighting in general, and the Belkan knight happy he gets to face an equal opponent.

With the rest of the Imps gone, the Demons and SOE men start filtering out of the buildings. Seeing the swordfight, the SOE men are smart enough not to interrupt their commander. Sam makes a move to help, but you stop her.

"No, Sam, this is something he must handle himself." You say sagely.

"It this another one of those stupid guy things?" Sam sighs..

"Yes, and because I totally want to see a swordfight without having to be involved in it."

"That's terrible, Cap, real terrible." Sam shakes her head.

"Ah, it's fine. You've got a bead on them, right Alek?"

"Yes sir." Alek says, adjusting his sights.

"See? Everything's under control." You nod.

"Ugh. Sometimes I just don't understand you." Sam rolls her eyes.

The fight goes on for another couple of minutes. While Jack has had years of practical combat experience under his belt, the knight had no doubt endlessly trained and drilled for this sort of fight. Both seemed evenly matched as their steel clashed with one another. However, Jack manages to find an opening and brings his sword down on a diagonal slash, cutting a deep gouge through the knight's chest. The knight staggers for a bit, drops his sword, and then drops to his knees. Both he and Jack lock eyes for a brief second, communicating some kind of nonverbal request. Jack merely gives a slight nod and swings his his broadsword again.

The knight's head goes rolling away onto the street while his body slumps forward. Well, that was one way to end a fight.

"That was a wild ride. Best fight I had in years." Jack grins as he slumps down on the side of the tank and starts wiping the blood from his blade. "Such a shame really, that this war has to end..."

While the battle went back and forth during the day, ultimately, the Federation prevailed. Seeing that Fardan had already been taken by the enemy, the Belkan knights staged a fighting retreat, leaving the field of battle to the Federation forces and falling back.

Losses were heavy on both sides, with the Federation losing over six hundred tanks. Of the ten M5s that participated in the battle, only 3 were still operational. However, that wasn't to say that the Belkans escaped unscathed. Thanks in part to your efforts, the Belkans lost nearly four hundred vehicles. While much less than the Federation, for a small, elite force like the Knights, those losses were almost irreplaceable.

By the end of the day, Fardan was in Federation hands. With a staging point and supply route into Belka secured, the entire operation would be entering into a new phase.

-----------------
MEANWHILE:

Karla read the message for what seemed to be the hundreth time. Though she had expected the Federation to make a move on Belka, she didn't expect to be so soon, and to push in so far. She wondered if they knew about Excalibur, even after all the efforts she made to hide its existence. The timing was too coincidental not to be.

Sir Erik Schnee meanwhile was sitting glumly in a chair, obviously unhappy at not being allowed to deploy on the frontlines. He wondered what was so important about this facility that required him to stay here at all times.

"Grand Master," He says, kneeling respectfully to his master. "Why have you held me and my men back? You know that if you sent me, or personally saw to the defense of Fardan , we may have prevailed!"

"The moment the Federation crossed the border, I knew Fardan was lost." Karla sighed. "Though the capture of the town is regrettable, I need you here. You will be the last line of defense between the encroaching Federation and Excalibur.

"Understood, Milady." Schnee nods.

As Karla walked away from her second in command, she allowed a very small form of panic to take over. In order to make sure her plans succeeded, she needed to find a way to delay the Federation as long as possible At least until Excalibur was completed. That meant, much to her chagrin, work schedules you have to be doubled or tripled in order to make the deadline. That meant things would be rushed, and would obviously have the potential of creating or overlooking a weakness.

Still, if she could play her cards well enough, Excalibur would be ready and long gone by the time they managed to breach the gates. These are your gates, after all!

"Erik, you are to personally guard this facility. Until the completion of Excalibur." Karla orders. "With the loss of Fardan, a push into Excalibur's chamber is a very real possibility. It will be on your shoulders to defend.

However, what was unnerving was that Karla' smile didn't stop or waver. She heard that Jager and his new fiance were in Belka now as well. Things were starting to get interesting now...

>And that's it for tonight! Tune in next time on Friday, 7-8pm PST.
