So I know I'm not alone in having bought Shadowrun Returns.

We need to make a /tg/ adventure module for it.

Let's use this thread to brainstorm/talk about how it's a horrible idea because /tg/ never gets shit done any more or whatever, but we have the tools to make something hella fun here and I say we should do it.
>>
Oh, and I'm about to have to leave for work, so I won't be able to bump/screw with this thread until later this afternoon, but I want to see what kind of traction we can get here without me pushing for it too.

So, until later.
>>
I'm enjoying the game so far but have no modding-skills or time, so will just have to hope that the community takes off.
>>
Well I'm happy to get involved, of course I have bugger all experience with modding, so there's going to be quite a learning curve for me.
>>
>>26285707
>We need to make a /tg/ adventure module for it.
Why not?
I propose "Zombie apocalypse" scenario.
>>
C-could we instert one of my mary-sue-immortal BBEG into it? He is not a dragon 'tough.
>>
>>26285739
>>26285773
You don't really need 1337 hax0r skillz to be able to make a module with the editor that game has. ´What you need is quite a lot of time.

Also, zombie apocalypse sounds good. Let's swarm the slums of seattle with the living dead.
>>
>>26286336
Aren't parts of the Barrens already kind of swarming with "zombies"...well, ghouls, but in the SR universe it's kind of the same thing.

Although, I think another fun idea for a scenario would be creating the Insect Spirit's attempt to take over...and if you can screw around with the character stuff (I haven't looked too deeply into the editor), allow for insect shaman as well.
>>
>>26286393
I dunno how well the editor lends itself to non-linear stories. Since I think that's what you're proposing here. Or did you mean isnect shamans as purely hostile NPCs?
>>
>>26286473
Insert insect shamans, allow you to pick to join them or not -- basically just two story branches.
>>
>>26286482
story branches are a lot of work, man. shit will take forever.
>>
>>26286482
Doesn't working for insects kind of make you batshit crazy?

Not really playable.

I'd say avoid anything overly complex, at least for a first attempt.

Just make a simple storyline about a run that goes bad, complete with doublecrosses, shootouts and corporate dickery.
>>
>>26285707
>http://www.shadowrunidentity.org/
Already on it.
>>
>>26286696
Get hired to gather the resources for a dark ritual involving a trip into the Matrix to get the rituals instructions and breaking into an ultra secure casino to get a100000 sided die and spend time getting shot at by a mysterious group intent on preventing the ritual from happening only to discover that some Neckbeards just wanted to play FATAL?
>>
>>26286696

Another question is where will the adventure module taking place?

The simple is that the adventure will take place in Seattle. Other alternative we can take other city or create our own fictional city.
>>
>>26286790
There's a lot of good cities to choose from in shadowrun.

Chicago (post-insects), LA, Dallas, Berlin, etc. etc.

It depends on what kind of story you want to tell.
>>
>>26286854
I thought chicago was just a big crater post insects.
>>
>>26286886
No, they just quarantined a large part of it and lots of people died.
>>
>>26286763
Is that a /tg/ project though?

As for the
>branching storylines hard
thing: I can't really see it being as difficult as it is made out to be. Not every encounter has to be fully different based off of which side you fall on and those that are different should just need some flags. Yeah, you are creating twice the content, but implementation shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Now of course this depends on how hardcore you want to make the branching, but in general, shouldn't be all that bad.
>>
>>26287092
I'd say that until people are sure how much they can handle though, it's best to keep things from getting too overambitious.

By all means look into how complicated a branching storyline would be, but what we don't want is everyone hyping each other up with plans for a 500 branch epic for the ages. That's the sort of thing which results in everyone giving up when the amount of work required becomes clear to them.
>>
>>26287092
I played around with the editor and played through the game, thing is the engine is very limited and its slow as fuck to create content for, although every retard should be able to use it to create things like terrain, interiors and stuff.

Stealth is impossible to implement without the source code
Can't revamp the inventory system
Conversation system won't be changeable in any meaningful way
You can't create 1 huge map with exterior and interior all in one, without transitions.
Action Point system more than likely will be unchangeable.
New Weapons and remade skill "trees" and such should be do-able.
Interface and UI will remain fucked.

The thing is, even if you get a team together to create a good campaign for it, the only thing that'll be able to shine is the writing and choices and maybe a new skill tree with new abilities would fix the gameplay somewhat.
But in the end you'll be better off creating a little city in the editor and then running your tabletop campaigns using your maps as reference.
>>
>>26286763
Man fuck that thing. I tried out their first module, which mainly involved wandering around a bus stop talking to people with bad dialogue until I talked to a dwarf who asked me for a book. Which I gave him, since I had it in my inventory.

It gave me 2 karma, he said something about this hurting him more than it hurt me, then he summoned a spirit which hit me three times and he shot me dead before I got an action.

Things like that do not fill me with confidence for the creator's ability.
>>
>>26287260

For stealth, you can do something creative with even trigger or dialog.

Let say that you walk pass the guard who looking at different direction and then trigger the event. Player get dialog choose what he/she should do. If runner have enough value, they can either try knocking out the guard if they have enough skills on Close Combat, or having high skills on Quickness to silently pass through and so on.
>>
>>26287391
That isn't real stealth, gameplay wise
>>
>>26287260
>is the writing and choices and maybe a new skill tree with new abilities would fix the gameplay somewhat
Well, that's frankly what /tg/ is fairly good at...except for the creating new skill tree thing
>>
>>26286057
Quiet, clown, you've had your starring roles already.
>>
>>26287412
It would work well enough. Considering the sheer degree of modifications that would need to be made to the game to actually implement a stealth system.

Honestly I felt like their official campaign would've benefited from a lot more trigger and dialog options relating to stats. Made it feel more like you were getting benefits for them beyond combat.
>>
>>26287412
>That isn't real stealth, gameplay wise
Is the editor robust enough to allow one to set environmental triggers based off of character abilities?
>>
I've been playing an Elf Mage/Shaman, I've had zero deaths so far. Got close, though.
>>
>>26287412
Stealth doesn't really work with isotopic RPGs, they just dont.
>>
Are there any modules or UGC out there yet?
>>
>>26287260
Would it be possible to create an infamy/notoriety mechanic in the editor (something to track your standing with various groups)?
>>
>>26287438
It should be, if not then there are dialog choices that do just that, which can circumvent that.

>>26287433
There would be a massive cognitive dissonance from gameplay and how the world works, considering you're just bluffing or intimidating a guard to get inside a building.

>>26287479
Easy as fuck, yes

>>26287450
Yeah, its a shame though
>>
>>26287495
>There would be a massive cognitive dissonance from gameplay and how the world works, considering you're just bluffing or intimidating a guard to get inside a building.

I don't really see the problem with having a conversation option which is something like:

>[Quickness: 4]: Sneak up on the guard and knock him out.

Then you fade the screen out for a second, and fade it back in with your characters standing near an unconscious guard who's been dragged into a nearby alleyway.
>>
>>26287525
The difference is that either you have to set the enemies inside as friendly or enemies, they do not require avoiding them
>>
>>26287725
I don't know that it's a problem. Is it not possible that the guards inside would be alerted by one of their friends being rendered dead or unconcious by flatlined vitals?
>>
>>26287725
Have multiple triggers set up that fire with dialogue when you get too close to an enemy, with options depending on your stats. The closer you get, the higher the quickness required not to be spotted. If you get too close, then you get spotted however good you are, but if you have good close combat, you can take the enemy down before they raise the alarm.
>>
>>26287771
How is that stealth if everyone is alerted and you're dragged into combat?
>>
>>26287774
I am not sure you can set the NPCs to walk around and initiate conversation with the PC, should be possible.

However all this is working around the problem by creating a pseudo stealth mode
>>
>>26287812
Most one can do, the lack of built-in stealth isn't going anywhere, so that's the best solution to the problem if you absolutely insist on stealth elements.
>>
I can only offer what I already whined about on /v/ as an idea.

The in-game campaign feels like half a game.
Finish it!

Make the PC globetrot and blow up UB chapters all over the world, maybe with Harlekin acting as the Johnson until he gets told by the Dragons/Cabal to stop that shit, no use risking discovery for the life of some plebs afterall.
>>
>>26287847
You lost me the moment you suggested having harlequin involved any more than he already is.

Honestly, I'd rather create something new and original, rather than just try to piggyback the official campaign.
>>
>>26287847
The main game is half the game. The DLC which is taking place in Berlin, will come out soon.
>>
>>26287864
Yeah, it is just a "with minimal work" idea without much ambition I admit.

Would just be something doable without requiring to shake a complete new context out of the sleeve and an excuse to use most of the assets already in game now.
>>
>>26288031
I'd say if there's one thing /tg/ is good at, it's ideas for adventures. I don't think coming up with a new idea for a module would be hard.

This is what I managed to shit out after 30 minutes of working myself into the editor.

The clipping issues when creating a map are annoying as fuck and the lightning system works, but its kinda meh
>>
>>26287438

Yeah a guard facing the wrong way, a conversation trigger, if your stealth is high enough one of the options is "Snake past", if not, the option available is "Step on a squeaky rubber dog toy"
>>
>>26288094
Looks kinda nice.
>>
Why not use characters and plotlines from the Shadowrun Storytime threads? I liked Twodee's stories, and I think they could work very well as the backbone of a module.
>>
>>26288807
Having a backbone for the story and characters would speed things up a lot. Better ask for permission, though.
>>
>>26288807

>Mr. Jackson was a frat boy. An orc frat boy. He had a baseball cap on and his white polo shirt had its collar popped. He had earrings on the back of one ear. He was wearing overexpensive AR shades, and they were running a porn vid. He was on his fifth Keystone Light by the time he approached Trout.

>He was called Mr. Jackson because he forgot what the name that a runner's employer was called was supposed to be.

>Jackson: "Yo, wassup homeboyee? You look like a Shadowrunner, and I be needin' a runner for real, dawg."
>Trout: "Greetings, employer. Watashi wa Shadowrunner."
>Jackson: "Watoshi-what? Dudebro, I don't need no fancy asian shit, I just gots a job that I needs a stone cold killin-ass motherfucker to do, knawmsayin? That you, bruh?"
>Trout: "I am indeed a stone-cold killing-ass motherfucker. What is the job?"
>Jackson: "I'ma pay you five hundred bucks to totally beat the shit outta this nerdlinger in my econ class."
>Trout: "...go on."
>>
How complicated would a better dialogue system bebea to implement?
>>
>>26288973

Define "better".
>>
Does anyone have the link to the DRM free version that was circulating around? I want to try it out but I'm not sure if I'd like it because I know almost nothing about Shadowrun.
>>
>>26288973
Current one seems pretty okay to me. Unless you plan on implementing the Blades of Exile Key and Flag system.
>>
>>26285707
Just give it waifus and anime cliches and /tg/ will praise you 5ever.
>>
>>26288982
It doesn't have to to be especially complex, say if you were rude to someone, then they'd be rude to you in all further conversations

Just something to show that your words actually do something.
>>
>>26289199
This. RPG crowd will eat anything that has waifus in it.
>>
>>26289232
Hell, the whole plot to SR was about getting revenge for your husbando.

Coyote best girl. Mostly because shes cheap as fuck and damned useful with a shotgun. I did the Renraku job with just my troll Dragon Sword wielding street sammy and her.

"Baby I know it."
>>
>>26289415
I went with a more glass cannon approach. Sort of. Only about 100 hp, but I had 4 ap like 13 strength so I could kill most people in 1-2 hits. Combine that with a support mage constantly armoring me up, hasting me, and healing any damage I took last round and I was a fucking monster.
>>
>>26289465
I found magic to be fairly eh. I rarely bothered with support, except on big jobs, like the Tessilon job or whatever it's called. Still stuck on that one, because I'm a crappy decker.

The Aegis job was pretty easy for me since I had a gunner, a sammy, and a mage babysitting my decker. Dodger sucked shit at decking, though.
>>26289539
Yeah, I stunlocked a few people with my dragonsword and I was probably poorly optimized, but I always do a straight warrior run on my first playthrough of any rpg. Or battlemage in the case of ME since Manguard felt more warrior than soldier did. Besides, I mostly just wanted to be a badass troll with a greatsword and a trenchcoat. That trumps any stats.

I'm planning on going elf decker next playthrough.
>>26289562
He looked a lot like Duke, but the smile made me think up a different voice for him.
>>
I just want a bunch of runs with different targets and ways to complete them. No bugs, no mary sues or saving the world. Just some fucking shadowruns.
>>
>>26287847
If you paid any attention to Jake at the end of the game, you would have realized the main campaign was more of a tech demo/opening for more stuff than anything else. He listed at least three other campaigns in his little talk alone.
>>
I feel kinda stupid asking this, but people have been talking about side missions, and I haven't noticed any yet. Where/what are they?
>>
>>26289629
Honestly, the Renraku Job was my favorite for that exact reason. At least the end of the Ripper Campaign hinted that you were mostly done with the shit.
>>
>>26289656
There's a johnson at the Union later in the game. I botched the run on moral grounds so I don't know if he offers any more jobs.

Other than that, I don't know. Optional objectives and selling recovered info to fences on the side, mostly.
>>
>>26289614
>I'm planning on going elf decker next playthrough.
There is a difference between immersing yourself in the story and completely gimping yourself.
>>
>>26289742
Playing a decker is not THAT bad.

You can technically get drones! And Mark is fairly useful....

Oh who am I kidding. I just beat the game as a human decker, and my character got geeked SO many times.

I'm considering playing a sammie or a mage.
>>
>>26289629
This, just make a bunch of simple runs that increase in difficulty as you go along, with some plot threading a few of them together for the final run or something of such, kind of like X-COM.
>>
>>26289742
I have never before let a bad idea stop me. I'm the kind of idiot who plays a game of Team Snipers and goes around beating people to death with a pistol. It usually works out well enough for me.
>>
>>26289656
Its mostly just grabbing bonuses during main missions except for the Renraku Job. Theres also that thug you can kill/intimidate at the beginning of the game, but thats it.
>>
>>26289805

I'd also like a core team of shadowrunners that you can interact with during and between missions. The plot would revolve around their personal issues and history, maybe with a mission for each party member that has to do with their personal issues.
>>
Well, okay, how's this. Firstly, the Megacorp angle was completely fucking absent.

So, how about this:
>you get a run from a Johnson to do a data steal from a run-down warehouse
>you do that, and your decker finds out that this is an Ares secret research thing
>whoops
>Ares contacts you, and tells you that you can either meet with their Johnson, or the Firewatch team outside your door is going to make you dead
>you meet the Johnson who wants you to get revenge on the Azzies by blowing up a reactor in one of their labs
>escalates from corp to corp
>eventually you come to find out about the major plot - the formation of GOD OR someone wants to restart Deus
>you stop that shit
>Horizon still paints you to look like a bad guy
>>
>>26289831
Yes, oh god, this.

I fucking felt like they were all disposable clones. It makes so much more sense to have a crew that you work with on a regular basis.
>>
>>26289831
Getting to know your team better would be nice. Maybe get a mutual hangout where you can grab your people from and if you do a few of their more personal missions, they're cheaper to hire for later runs. Get like a core party of 6-8 to choose from and interact with, but make a lot of the random hires you pad out the Fixer menu with also hang out either in your safehouse or a nearby bar.

Also, more open world. I was so disappointed by the lack of freeroam.
>>
>>26289879
>>26289875

We know it's possible since Coyote in the default Campaign works like this. Should be possible to give backstories to some of the more interesting runners you can hire, and make missions for each of them.
>>
>>26289875
>he doesn't have the imagination to think about the sort of conversations the characters have during the missions.
Seriously, during the attack on the Corp, I kept imagining my people telling the elf decker to hurry while covering both doors and shit, or when walking around them saying "clear" and other mild conversations when like hiring the same people over and over.
>>
>>26289831
What!? This isn't MASS EFFECT. Some people are well-adjusted to their careers as mass murderers for hire. Having all of them be all HOO-BLOO I'M HOMESICK when each of them has probably killed like sixty-people each in the course of the campaign is just dumb. At most it should be something short and atmospheric, like going to a shop and buying them a cake or something. Throwing them a birthday party. Not infiltrating Renraku and killing four-hundred random ass Lonestars to get their picture of Bora Bora back from the corrupt Renraku CEO or whatever.
>>
>>26289910

I Think even the well-adjusted mass murderers have some jilted ex, a bounty they're tracking and want help with, a former employer out for their ass, or a run that they just HAVE TO do because of reasons. It doesn't have to be abloo bloo shit, just stuff related to their personal history and a chance to learn about it.
>>
I started messing with the editor and looking at the tutorials after finishing the game yesterday. After messing around and getting a feel for it I'm probably just going to make a bunch of one-shots with already powerful characters.
Maybe the option to play as a premade one if you don't want to import yours.
>>
>>26289831
Keep it simple, and you'll have the Campaign of the Year. I also don't think X-COM was the best example but I haven't played much isometric games, aside from Icewind Dale 2 and Jagged Alliance 2. Actualy, both games have some cool ideas for this, but we should first get the base and foundation first and only after that we get on details.

But what kind of approach would be best: your PC already has a full fledged team but he can hire a few more or the PC is "alone" and he has to go hiring the ones you feel like ala JA2?
>>
>>26289934
Just set them up for power level for a character that finished the Dead Man's Switch.
>>
>>26289906
Wait, Telestrian or Renraku?

Because during the Renraku run, my Runners were quipping about "Basilisks, it had to be basilisks," and something like "Bogey!"

But yeah, personality would be nice.

>>26289910
Go back to /v/ please. Have you read the little side-stories in the Shadowrun core rulebook? One of the more fun things about it is that the runners all have distinct personalities.
>>
>>26289947
We need more megacorp shenanigans.
>>
>>26289910
Its not about giving them SO SAD DADDY ISSUES A BLOO BLOO. Its more like, imagine if you were one of the random hires in the main campaign and some dude was all like ''Yo, some rat bastid geeked a bro of mine. Mind helpin me find the drekhead responsible? I can pay you for your troubles.'' Its about striking the balance between Keanu Reeves and Emotional Mess in order to create an enjoyable character.
>>
>>26289961
Yeah I had coyote with me and she made a couple of quips about basilisks, it was kind of weird that it came out of nowhere.
>>
>>26289950
Yeah, that's what i was thinking. Probably won't bother even adding Karma gain to them.
>>
>>26289972
Ah, okay. Sorry, I was having ME 2 flashbacks. So many goddamned "Loyalty" missions....
>>
So I played this, and it has gotten me interested in Shadowrun. Besides the main rulebook where should one start reading about the lore? Seems to be an ungodly amount of sourcebooks out there.
>>
>>26289995
Your Runner also says something if you let Bugbitch feed off of one of the insect beacons.
>>
>>26290023
But the Loyalty Missions were the best part of ME2. They were varied and interesting, even if the motivation behind them was retarded and obnoxious. Much better than all three of the main missions, though.
>>
>>26290024
Shadowrun 5 just came out.
>>
>>26289771
You died a lot?
My human decker only died once on the doctor fight, mostly by screwing up.
I got up to 5 body, rifle headshots and maxed intelligence (with almost maxed decking) and pretty much never had any issues. Just got the better rifle and armour as they came along and that was that.
>>
So, is there any way to get a consistent group of the same people to go with the player on missions?
What I want to do is make 4-5 npcs for the first mission, then the player selects their favorite (ie, filling the roles and leaving the one most like themselves out) and for the rest of the campaign, that is the group they need to work with.
Is it possible to upgrade them as the story progresses so that they improve with the player? Should there by 'loyalty' missions that improve their stats?
>>
>>26290082
It was the motivation I had a problem with.

"Garrus, my best friend who's been with me through thick and thin! Whose life I have saved MULTIPLE TIMES IN THIS GAME. Whose ass I pulled out of a burning, airstrike filled building! Open that door fast, pretty please."

"I can't Shepard! I'M NOT LOYAL ENOUGH!"

For every. Single. Party Member.
>>
I also want the Contact list to matter. You handle an op well? You can add the johnson to the list and they'll be able to provide favors to make missions easier. Fuck the op up, and they'll snub you.
>>
>>26290024
Well, you have two options:

A) Pick up the SR 4th edition 20th anniversary version (comes with errata built in). Beyond that, it all depends on what kind of info you want. Arsenal is a good all rounder since EVERYONE needs/wants gear. After that, it varies. Augmented gives new cyberware, Unwired has some cool stuff for hackers/technos (but has some shitty expand matrix rules), Street Magic (yay, new magic stuff. Lots of goodies), and Attitude (lots of stuff for the face of the party). Basically, pick up core. Play a few games. If you like it, pick up Arsenal. After that, pick up whatever. (Sixth World Almanac is good since it gives you a lot of info on the setting). Downside of this option? No new stuff, because....

B) Pick up SR 5th Edition. It fixes a few of the issues in SR4 but adds a few more (on the whole, it's an improvement). However, the only thing out at the moment is the core book. Ignore the trolls, it isn't as bad as they're making it out (mostly just nitpicky stuff).

>>
>>26290113
Oh trust me, I can talk you up and down for fucking hours on how much I hate Mass Effect 2 and what it did to the series, but the crux of the matter is that ME2 isnt the first game to have character related side missions, it just made them mandatory and their motivations awful. That said, they were typically still the best missions of the game since there was at least an attempt to vary them a bit.

For examples of good character missions, you've got Jolee Bindo helping his friends out in KOTOR, learning about Atton and his sith days in KOTOR 2, helping Minsc in Baldurs Gate, pretty much the whole final third of Crono Trigger with particular note to Frogs quest since that was my favorite, and plenty of other shit. The trick is to make them optional, but make the player WANT to play them since they like the character enough and to reward them with bonuses to said character, not make them mandatory and punish the player by killing off the characters he didn't help out.
>>
>>26290101
I figure that everyone who whines about how gimped deckers are stats them with absolutely zero skills beyond decking out of some misplaced idea that a shadowrunning decker shouldn't even know which end of a gun to hold.

I finished my game with a decker with about 7 or 8 in intelligence and good decking skills, who still pulled their weight in combat thanks to quickness and a pistol skill of about 6. Didn't die once.

I had to rewind my save from the final mission, because I ran out of medpacks and could not possibly survive. Healing magic only heals the last bit of damage, which always seems to be residual damage so it only heals 1hp or 4hp.

It's impossible for me to finish the game because of this.

I'm playing a Dwarf Adept Monk, who buffs himself as much as possible and punches people to death.

I leveled up magic and gave my character a bunch of high level spells and I still can't beat it. Bombardiers fuck my shit up so much. 17 damage and -2 body and -2 armor over and over again is impossible to beat.

I wish I just picked a fucking pistolero like I was thinking about so I wouldn't have to deal with this shit. I wish there was a save editor so I could change my character to that so I can finish this damn game.
>>
>>26290183
On that note, is it possible to get specific characters to shout things during runs?
The Renraku run had a character shout "Why did it have to be basilisks?" but I suspect that would have happened for any character to run in there. Could the same happen, but for a specific character to shout something relevant to their personality? Like "Ha! Gotcha bitch!" when they score a crit?
>>
>>26290233
I havent toyed with the editor yet so I dont know. Just be careful, though, theres nothing worse than hearing the same lines over and over again with every single crit/stun.

Unless its SW Battlefront, because all the bots and their canned lines endeared on me after a while. Clones, especially.
>>
>>26290230
Did you take the Tir Ghost along? He also gets one of the special guns to kill the bugs and with the shotgun orc I forget the name of (wind something) you can shoot them down as fast as they come up and kill them with three combined attacks from you Harlequin and the ghost.
>>
>>26290233
I really wouldn't want dialogue to trigger on normal combat actions. I mean imagine if you put one in for Weak, then a guy going full auto with an assault rifle twice in a round got all weak hits.
>>
>>26290303
>Harlequin
Can I just shoot him in the back and leave him to die?
>>
>>26290303
I picked the Tir Ghost and Levi, the Nephilim Network gunner who costs the most as my guys. I buff Levi and the tir Ghost with +18% accuracy and they handled the first part of the mission well, but the second part is overwhelming.

Is the Shotgun Orc better than Levi? He is pretty good with an SMG burst firing with 99% accuracy. I think he also has a burst fire shotgun

She was doing 40-60 damage a turn regularly, depending on hits. More if crits. Grab her and Harlequin and the Ghost and see how that treats you.

I brought a combat decker just in case I needed him, but my hopes were too high for this game. The last mission really needs as much dpt as possible to get the bugs down as fast as you can.

Projects from communities this big suffer from that, it would be better if fewer people just kick in and do their stuff. Or have different teams working on different projects that intend to different gameplay styles and such.

Most of the time were /tg/ got shit done was because a small group got it done, and not the whole /tg/-goers.

Basically, set it in LA during the 2050s, just after the Green Tide, with Aztechnology using the chaos to try and carry out a covert corporate takeover of LA. The PC and assorted runner allies get hired for what seems like a routine job, which is really the opening shot in the Azzie plot, and find themselves getting more and more tangled up in the escalating shadow war between Aztechnology and the local power players.

OP here.

Holy fuck. This is the most successful thread I've ever made in the years I've been coming here. Thanks for the ideas guys.

Here's what I'm thinking: by the end of next week, I'll have the extra scratch to throw up a website with a simple forum on it. While /tg/ is great for recruiting people who are interested in participating in such things, it generally sucks for actually doing the real work.

For those who want to participate, they can and in what way they can. We'll post like weekly updates here just to keep the ball rolling and bring in new blood whenever people invariably get tired of it/life gets in the way.

Anyone object?

If not, my email is in the email field. Shoot me a line and when I get the forums up and running (should be around Thursday or Friday), I'll send everyone who expresses interest an email letting them know.

here is something I've been screwing around with trying to learn the editor.

Not that anyone asked for it.

My idea behind this is Corporations might like to buy cheap labor/muscle from prisons who exhibit a certain level of...creativity and finesse.
it's a hard knock life, might as well make some dosh while keeping it real.
>>

>>
Anyone tried any of the modules that are already out?
>>
>>26291764
That could come in handy for something else I'd considered.

Namely a jailbreak of a sort. Not that the corp wants you to get a person out of jail, they want you to remove a piece of experimental bioware from an inmate before it's discovered by the prison medical staff (who do experiments on the prisoners), since the prison is run by a rival corp.
>>
>>26291808
As far as I know only one module is out, and I believe I gave my opinion on that near the beginning of the thread.

>>26287386
>>
>>26291816
>>26291764

These ideas are easy to combine. You could start out in prison, and be approached by a corp inside man that offers you freedom in exchange for stealing the bioware.
>>
>>26291808
I just got the game day before yesterday, so I'm still playing through the main quest.
>>
>>26291842
That would actually make for a good start to the plot for a module.

Having been set free, you get to enjoy freedom as a shadowrunner for a while, make some contacts, do some side missions etc. Then a corp man from the corp that set you free contacts you to tell you that unless you want to go right back in, you're working for them.

Cue getting tangled up in corp conspiracies whilst trying to figure out a way to get loose of the corp's clutches and really gain your freedom.

Exactly. A great start to the campaign.

To expand on my thoughts for that one.

They smuggle you out of the prison after you do the job for them by drugging you up and shipping you out with a delivery of cadavers for the organleggers. What they fail to mention is that while you were anaesthetized they implanted a cranial bomb in your skull. So you are kind of stuck working for them. However, in between doing missions for them, and doing other missions to raise your street cred and make some allies, you can make plans to get the bomb out and get the corp off your back.

Which includes such steps as:

Actually figuring out what corp it is and who within said corp it is who's holding the trigger.

Finding a street doc with the skills to actually remove the cranial bomb for you and getting them to owe you a favour so they'll do it.

Breaking into a private (and heavily guarded) hospital to steal some laser surgical equipment so that the street doc can actually perform the careful surgery required without killing you.

and finally, staging a raid on the corp facility where the files on you are kept, erasing all details from the matrix and putting two rounds in the skull of the guy who put you through all that shit.
>>
>>26291943
The runner then gets seemingly random contracts which he has to fulfill to not get killed or jailed again.

The contracts then center around taking out personnel within the corp he works for, enemy corps, counter intelligence and shifting events in his contractors favor.

Optional quests would be finding out why the corp needs specific tasks done, the collection of dossiers of his targets, employers and associates of both until completion.

All the while making unlikely allies on your way and creating a network of your own, or setting up enemies against each other to further your own goals

If the PC succeeded excellently in his tasks he'd be rewarded by either taking over the corp that employed him in the first place or creating his own
>>
>>26292145
>>26292182
Hmm, looks like there's some conflicting ideas on how this ends, but then again that could be the final choice.

Go corporate, or fuck over the corp and stay in the shadows.
>>
>>26292660

That could be a branching choice about midway in the campaign, and lead to two entirely different mission trees, one corp-loyal and one corp-revenge. You'd need a lot of prep work to do the vengeance stuff, and it would contrast nicely with the other tree where you rise in the ranks.
>>
>>26289219
You can do that with a boolian variable thats already in the editor
>>
>>26289659
was the renraku run backers only because i seem to ahve missed it?
>>
>>26292823

No, it's not. Just look for a Mr. Johnson in the bar after you complete the mission to infiltrate the Unified Brotherhood.
>>
>>26292864
Oh im already well past that. Oh well, what is the renraku run anyway, im not exactly planning to replay the game.
>>
>>26292702
I'd say, if one keeps the cranial bomb idea, the end mission could be remarkably similar either way. How about this:

The guy who's been calling the shots on you is getting more and more unpredictable as the corp loyalty missions go on, and the PC and his allies start to get worried, so do some snooping, and find out he's been doing some dirty dealing, skimming company profits, selling corp secrets, that kind of thing, and is planning on skipping town and signing up with a rival soon. So you contact another corp high-up who you had dealings with earlier and cut a deal, you get the cranial bomb removed and a proper, high paying corp job, and in return you take down your former employer and provide evidence of his actions.
>>
>>26292955
>what is the renraku run anyway
Did you see the combat example they did before? That mission minus the talking to the guard in the beginning.
>>
>>26289219
I can't imagine it would be that hard. I haven't played with the editor myself, but it has to have some kind of variables you can attach to characters, right? Like you define a variable called, "isAngry," that starts at 0, add one to it every time the PC is rude to the NPC, and once it hits a certain threshold the NPC starts using different, more pissed-off lines.
>>
>>26293001
It also seemed to be lacking the ability to gas the basilisks, unless I missed something.
>>
>>26293001
wait they took that out? I didn't even notice because I just walked in with my gun out
>>
>>26293009
I wonder if it would be possible to have that variable affect hiring cost for runners. It would make sense, the more like they like you, the more likely they are to do you a solid and work for cheap.
>>
>>26293014
I don't remember that option in my game either. But I forgot about that part of the demo.
>>
>>26293034
I had to play that mission twice. Both times as soon as someone walks in the guard goes "Ahhh!" or something and runs away.
>>
>>26293038
You could get pretty crazy with a variable like that, too. If you also had a general reputation/notoriety level implemented, you could potentially have that impact an NPC's starting personal reputation level. Could even vary by character, if the NPC is particularly important. For example (to boost some characters from Shadowrun Storytime), a stone-cold killing-ass motherfucker like Dervish might be impressed if you have a high confirmed body count and associated notoriety level; while a more subtle character like Bend might think you're a liability (or a monster).
>>
scooby doo

>>26293034

>>
>>26293038

Would be nice to have runners owe you favors that you can cash in by having them run with you for free for one mission. Like, a runner is looking for a particular item and you happen across it on a run, bring it to the runner and he'll owe you a favor.

I actually thought about adapting one of the old Shadowrun novels to SRR. Born To Run, specifically. For those who've never read it, the story centers around a newbie runner who comes to Seattle to make it big, gets a crash-course in being jerked around by friends and coworkers, and averts a gang war by shooting a bunch of gangers and knicking their stuff. I'd probably have to strip out the bits about the protagonist getting magical training to account for people playing techno or natural characters, but the basic plot and cast of characters could work. It could also make an effective newbie's guide to the shadows, since the plot touches on all the big aspects of the Shadowrun universe (magic, the Matrix, the dangers of working with middle management, etc.).

Would /tg/ play it?
>>
>>26293994
/tg/ would, I have also seen several mentions of adapting shadowrun novels to modules on the main forums. Can't swear if this is one of them, but might be worth looking up.

That is basically how the finished game plays. There are a couple of minor changes (jacked in riggers can use their actions to shoot or interact with stuff instead of just hiding, for example), and I don't really know if the putting away your gun thing works. That's about it.

So in shadowrun lore, did all the black people turn into orcs and trolls or something?
>>
>>26294309
No, SURGE is random and metahumans are actually as varied in their ethnicity as normal humans are (you see black elves, asian orcs/trolls, etc.) Part of Shadowrun's thing is just that the goblinized metahumans (orks and trolls) get a disproportionate amount of racism and it's meant to be reminiscient of the way blacks were treated in the 20th century. It's not always done very subtly.
>>
>>26294309
No, the metatypes are more or less evenly distributed across the races. In fact it's stated at various points that very few people give a shit about color, creed, or genitals of choice anymore, and presence or absence of pointy ears and horns is pretty much the prejudice of the day.

Other than "Dandelion Eaters", what sorts of racists terms are there in shadowrun?

I know for starters, I want to revamp the decker to actually have some options outside of the Matrix. I'm really regretting using a decker as my first character, as he's pretty much useless outside of the matrix... On the other hand, IN the matrix, he's a lot more useful than those other schmucks you're often saddled with. Maybe if he could somehow shut off enemy cyberwear, or something. I don't know if environmental effects, like killing the lights, would work, or overloading various electrical devices around the battlefield... I've barely even looked at the editor.

I did have some ideas regarding story though, depending on how possible it is to make branching paths. Basic premise: Your first job as a Shadowrunner goes just fine; you geek some corporate manager and make off with the chip in his skill, but then corporate goons kick in the door to the bar you're drinking at and make a good attempt at killing you and your pals. After you fight them off, you find the Johnson is dead, as is the decker you had with you on the run (didn't come drinking with you guys and instead headed home). You then spend the adventure trying to find out who's got you on a corporate blacklist, what was on that chip that has them so scared you know about, how to stop them and maybe, just maybe make it out of all this, without ending up in an organ grinder's!

Besides that initial scene though, I've not got many ideas for plot... I had a vague idea that the chip contained either highly sensitive blackmail info... Or something like plans and charts to a deposit of natural orichalcum and some corproation's plan to use it in essence-friendly cyberwear... Any ideas?

I'm actually starting to worry, as the tutorials and learning to use the editor at anything other than a basic level, is starting to look really intimidating.
>>
Why not just have some hub areas set up and then people can make individual contributions of various one-off runs, some multiple stage runs, or even a few campaign length jobs all accessible from the various johnsons or what-have-yous in the hub areas?

Elves: keeblers, keebs
Orks: tusker, trog
Trolls: trog
Dwarves: halfers
Humans: breeders
>>
>>26294677
Is this possible with the SRR editor?
>>
>>26294727

Yeah, it's possible to set up module dependencies so that one module checks variables from a different one, like whether an NPC is alive or dead or a conversation has happened. Naturally, the player has to have both modules installed for this to work.
>>
>>26294415
All the really nasty ones: Elf, Ork, Troll, Dwarf.
The rest are just silly.

I mean, Orks and Trolls outbreed humans.

There should definitely be more options for hacking environment shit for effects. Reroute traffic so security reinforcements get delayed, hack into the electric grid and kill power to the local area, and shit like that.
>>
Is it possible to make something like the megadrive/ genesis shadowrun game with the editor?
The game was kinda open-worldish and you could practically do unlimited kinda random runs.

Some of those can be handled via a matrix run. Like hacking traffic and so on. But like... Say the enemy is standing near to that terminal over there. Let me just get out my deck here and... ZAPPO! More options than just a Tau markerlight would be nice. Just load them up, like a mage's spellbook. Less options in the matrix, but more outside, sort of thing, perhaps.

I've got no clue how I'd do that though... I'll likely have to abandon my grand ideas, due to a lack of technical expertise and just make a straightforward, linear story, that struggles to be relevant, amid a sea of technically superior offerings.

If I can ever figure out how this thing works at all, that is... And get a plot together... Sleep first though. Hope this thread is still up when I awake.

Don't bend yourself out of shape pursuing that. Just make sure there is ALWAYS a decking option and a Matrix run in every scene you make up. Make sure it happens way more often than in the Deadman Switch campaign (or whatever it's called)

I mean I know nothing about SRR's editor, so I really wonder if it's possible to make unlimited random runs.

It's not the most complex level editor I've looked at but the only thing i've really had experience with before was making shitty command and conquer maps. The tutorials are kind of long and other people have said they're not even complete.
>>
>>26294972
Oh, also random encounters. The megadrive game had random encounters, for example
>there is a woman being chased by some guy
>do you want to attack the guy or scream at him to not touch her or whatever else
Would it be possible to add that in the editor?
I kinda doubt it.

>You should emphasize the complications of such a workaround though- all variables would likely have to be story variables and about every Trigger would need at least one associated story variable to check it´s state (can you pick that Medkit up again after saving or not? etc.).

>It is doable- but for larger scenes (for which it makes sense) this is very work intensive.
>>
>>26294928
So decker characters suck in the core game? Good to know, I'm going to be starting the game tomorrow.
>>
>>26295882
There are very few opportunies for them to well, do their job. Basically everything else is viable though.
>>
>>26295787
Did he just post that? Wasn't there a second ago.
I don't know much about the game or the editor. So what, the game loads everything completely new after you save the game? You'd think a saving feature would actually save stuff.
>>
>>26295936

I'm not sure how you think saving works. It has to LOAD everything correctly when you LOAD a game. That means every interactable doodad, every completed line of dialogue and every item picked up.
>>
>>26295936
No, to prevent the game from refreshing everything when you save you need to do a bunch of work creating data structures to store the game's state.

I haven't looked at the editor, but it looks like there's a difference between something like object variables (Triggers, is I guess what they're called) that make sure the medkit disappears when you pick it up during the game, but are only associated with their own specific objects, and story variables that store data about the entire scene.

To make a non-checkpoint based save system, you need to create a story variable for every Trigger, because now you have one big save system that cares about the state of every interactable object in your scene.
>>

neat thread is still up.

I've done some more work on my little prison.

Still don't know jack shit about the editor, but I know more than I did this morning.
>>
>>26297734
Well the checkpoint system does do that, but if you want to mod in a save anywhere system you need to also create the tools to write down all that information.

With checkpoints, it's a lot easier to know what the game state will look like, since your NPC and item objects don't need to talk to the save system. You never need to worry about remembering who the player has talked to and what items they've picked up because they can only ever load from the checkpoint, and necessarily haven't talked to anyone or picked anything up.
>>
I'm playing an Elf Shaman/Mage, shit is fun. The cover system could've used a bit of work. Half the time I was out of cover because I had to summon stuff. Kinda wish the totems were more helpful, I think I picked wrong one.I went Coyote spirit, for that extra quickness.

I wish totems weren't one time use only, and the barriers they're pretty useless it seems. You just have a limited number of slots available, kinda silly.
>>
>>26299107
I love the bear Totem. It's just an AOE heal wound spell, which is amazing.
>>
>>26299107
Barriers are awesome in missions where you have a choke point. You can make someone take 10-20 damage just by going through a door and then 20-40 more with a shotgun blast to the face with overwatch.

I did my first run as a human rigger and just barely scraped through the end missions. I'm now on the last mission as a shotgun toting elf with just enough points in various magical and technological things to get some decent buffs and barriers. Also robot legs.

Starting a turn with 5AP and an accuracy buff is a good way to clear out a room full of bad guys. Reloading is never an issue as I carry three shotguns.

The cover system is absolute balls though. I never rely on it. If you do manage to get your team into a decent position some fucker will just lob a grenade at you.
>>
>>26299107
the barriers should only really be used for choke points like the endless wave of lonestar, or for controlling where melee enemies will go,
>>
>>26299107

One time use? The Totems have a cooldown like everything else.
>>
>>26299209
If you're close enough to benefit from bear you're close enough to take a grenade to the face.
>>
>>26299249
The foci, or what ever they're called that summons the spirits.
>>
...Were there that many grenades in-game?
I saw like... 1 lobbed at me
>>
>>26299400
You have not felt my AoE. DoT. negative AP, armor shred pain.
>>
>>26299319
Movement. Have everyone use 1 ap to move, one to shoot, one to move away again. Bam, all wounds healed even if at gimped firepower.
>>
>>26299458
But 5 AP is enough to clear the entire room out.
>>
>>26299518
I'm not saying I used it often. In fact the few times i actually used it everyone would've been in splash range. Still better than shitty +quickness or +move.
>>
>>26299598
Just get yourself the haste spell and a barrier and never hire a shaman.
>>
>>26299624
Well my main character was a Rigger with a bunch of Cyberware so spells wouldn't really sync well with that. Haste and distraction summoners were most of the reason to bring shamans.
>>
>>26299697
I had major accuracy problems with my rigger and I could never make him mesh well with a group.
>>
>>26299725
Aren't his drones accurate enough?
Your rigger should be moving or marking
>>
>>26299725
I had him throw a bunch of points into pistols and quickness as well, still had him max drone control before the final mission. He didn't dish THAT much damage but he held his own.

>>26299777
I never bothered throwing skills into decking. You can't carry two drones and a deck unless you feel like going in unarmed.
>>
>>26299941
Decking isn't all that useful anyways from what I've seen. How's rigging in the game?

Also I really wished they'd had runners more like Half-Sky & Coyote, ones that had dialogue and you bonded with. Instead of random runners that the Fixer hooks you up with.
>>
>>26300126
>How's rigging in the game?
You can by 1 character that brings ~9AP worth of actions to the table and 3 targets to spread damage over.

But they're bugged in multi-stage levels. Drones lose their bonuses. Makes some parts hard. But if you open your karma screen and reclick on your highest level of Int, drone control, and drone combat, then the bonuses are reapplied
>>
>>26300164
How about for NPCs?
>>
>>26300196
Some of the rigger NPC's suck serious ass. Like hiring one when they have two drones and a gun in their equipment screen, then realizing they only have two equip slots and they just have to punch everything.
>>
>>26300207
Quite odd
>>
>>26300207
Yeah as a rigger it's essential to get that third weapon slot unless you feel like being a useless vegetable.
>>

Those ghettos that blacks live in now were previously occupied by immigrants of the Irish, Italian, and Jewish variety.
