tl;dr
Strike Witches Quests are tryhards.

Other pictures hang along the walls- a portrait of an old joint fighter wing, eight witches, including a younger Georgette, arrayed in front of a Fighter- you can't ID it- in a hangar. A faded unit patch shows a bird of prey- eagle, maybe? Gripping a cracked red hexagon in it's talons, a lightning bolt peircing it's prey. Above the bird, the patch reads 502nd Joint Fighter Wing, and below, it bears the legend Brave Witches.

“Mama's unit, from the war.” Captain Blackwell says, smiling as you look back at her. “After the Gloire went down.”

Framed paintings of a pair of ships- you easily ID the battleship California in one, the other, you're not sure- looks like a light cruiser, maybe a destroyer. “The cali I recognize,” you say, “But what's this other one?”

“The Gloire. Mama's ship in the earlier part of the war. Light cruiser with the french navy. Went down in the north Atlantic taking on three martian dreads.”

“Three dreads? In a light cruiser?” You ask, kind of surprised. “Either their skipper was nuts or...”

“He couldn't outrun them- they were working an ambush. He died on the bridge early on, the man that took over, LaCroix, he dispatched mama to save the ship's logs and give warning. She ended up being picked up by the California when papa dove into the water after her. The two dreads weren't a match for the royal navy battlegroup sent to hunt them down.”
