Predator Quest: Episode 44

You are Three-Claw, a Yautja hunter of the Cloud Viper clan. You have been tasked by your clan Matriarch to investigate breaches of forbidden knowledge by clan Weyland on the planet Fey'lenn, or Pandora, as it is known in the human tongue.

You think carefully as Flame-Mantle describes the details of your mission. You examine the map of the city of Dubai carefully, and commit the more prominent details to memory. "And my rules of engagement?" you ask Flame-Mantle.

"Up to you," he answers. "Your objective is to destroy the stolen technology. How you do it is your decision."

He glances at his wrist computer. "Time to go clean up the Night-Prowler mess." He gestures to your Matriarch. "Your clan will provide you with any support you need for the details."

He begins to leave, but suddenly remembers something. "One more thing. As an imperial agent, you're entitled to some... exotic equipment. Come see me aboard my ship, the Kraken-Slayer, when you have time. I'll show you our armory."

With that, he bids you farewell.

Do you:

A. Speak to your Matriarch.
B. Go to the orbital defense station and speak to your mentor about the hijacked ship
C. Brief your teammates and discuss with them about the next mission.
D. Board your ship and head for the Kraken-Slayer.

>>A. Speak to your Matriarch.

You wait until Flame-Mantle exits the door and turn to your Matriarch.

She clicks in amusement. "I can't say I'm surprised. With the nature of the conspiracy you're dealing with, it was bound to get the attention of the Empress. Now, to business."

She raises a holo-screen and turns to towards you. "Edict from the Empress. All human vessels are to be tracked and tagged. We're getting a better picture of human fleet movements by the day. We have increased Weyland Yutani ship movements across several of these sectors, close to Earth. Getting you past them will be easy with the ship you've captured, but getting reinforcements to you afterwards will be very difficult. So take what you need and make sure you're amply prepared."

Do you:

A. Ask her about the discovery that was made in the Archives.
B. Ask her if you can take a look at the human fleet movement data.
C. Ask her if she knows what will be done to the human research on Fey'lenn.

You ask her about the discovery that was made in the Archives. She clicks in irritation. "News travels quickly, it seems."

She presses a button on her desk and the door behind you hisses shut. "It's about the synthetic head you found, the one that supposedly was capable of controlling the black-beasts.

"We know the humans don't have the technological capability to produce something like that, and must have done so with outside aid. We were right. The computer core located within the synthetic's head is a fragment of one of our ship-mounted cloaking computers; one of the more advanced ones."

You growl. "That explains how they're able to replicate our cloaking tech."

"It's worse than that," your Matriarch tells you. "The humans were able to decrypt much of our technology, no doubt with help from our own technicians. We suspect the humans now have a very good understanding of how our cloaking systems work, and may have better methods to detect us. Needless to say, this puts one of our greatest technological edges in jeopardy. You can imagine the rash decisions and panic this news will cause if allowed to disseminate."

You agree.

A. Ask her if you can take a look at the human fleet movement data.
B. Ask her if she knows what will be done to the human research facilities on Fey'lenn.

You ask her if you can take a look at the human fleet movement data.

"Yes," she answers. "I've committed a good portion of our fleet assets to map out human patrols and movements."

She enters a few commands on her wrist computer and the holo-screen flickers, showing you a star map criss-crossed with various lines.

"Red represents Weyland-Yutani ships. White represents humanity's government naval assets. Green represents neutral freighters and civilian shipping."

You examine the star map closely. You notice a converging trajectory among major Weyland-Yutani vessels, and they're all headed towards Earth. The naval ships, on the other hand, seem to be spread out, running constant patrols between humanity's outlying colonies.

You feel a bit of unease.

She turns to you. "What do you think?"

You reply:

A. "It will be difficult to thread through so many Weyland-Yutani ships converging towards Earth.
B. "Why are all the Weyland-Yutani ships converging on Earth? Do they somehow know our plans?"
C. "I think Weyland-Yutani is attempting to stage a coup against the current political leaders on Earth."

"I think Weyland-Yutani is attempting to stage a coup against the current political leaders on Earth," you tell her.

She clicks thoughtfully. "That is one possibility, yes, in which case, you'll be flying blind into a potential warzone, and with your cloaking possibly compromised..."

She taps her desk. "It's risky, whatever the case. Perhaps it's worth it to tap in to your contact list. See what you can find out."

Do you:

You decide to head over to the Archives. The first thing you notice as you approach the familiar complex is a large number of warriors patrolling the outside. Several checkpoints have been set up on the streets leading up to the imposing complex.

You walk up to the main entrance and are immediately stopped by a pair of Cloud-Viper warriors. You show one of them the Empress's sigil. He tells his partner, "It's him. He's allowed." He turns to you and salutes you respectfully, then gestures at the door, allowing you to pass.

As you enter, you're met by the archivist. She looks somewhat fatigued, but nonetheless greets you with enthusiasm.

"Good to see you, Three-Claw. I heard about what you did with the Night-Prowlers. Glad to see you back in one piece."

You ask her about her research regarding the stolen cloaking technology.

She leads you down the hallway and into her laboratory. There, you see various components of the synthetic head mounted on clamps and racks. She summons a holo-screen and points to what looks to be a complex schematic.

"That's from the cloaking computer of a hunting ship - one of clan Night-Prowler's later designs. The Night-Prowlers are renowned for their compact and effective cloaking systems, and this particular example is probably the last thing we want the humans to get their hands on."

The holo-screen flickers, and several tables of data begins to scroll. "They've no doubt taken this apart and studied it in great depth. They're not able to replicate it fully yet, but by half rote copying, half transplanting, they've managed to advance their computing technology by a good two decades."

Do you:

A. Ask her about the performance of humanity's new cloaking capabilities.
B. Ask her about whether she thinks the humans will have improved their detection and sensor capabilities.

You ask her about whether she thinks the humans will have improved their detection and sensor capabilities.

She thinks for a moment. "This offers them great insight into our stealth technology, and I'm certain they would have ported much of it to engineer ways to better detect similar systems. But to be truthful, our cloaking systems rely on good old fashioned reduction of optical, thermal, and electromagnetic emissions, and just because they understand the mechanics behind it doesn't necessarily provide them with any special means to nullify it. But on the other hand, the computational speed of our technology does offer them new options in sensor technology. I would expect their sensors to have longer ranges and faster acquisition. Be careful, and don't rely too much on your cloaking system."

A. Ask her about the performance of humanity's new cloaking capabilities.

She thinks for a moment, and clicks dejectedly. "Unfortunately, that is out of my area of expertise. The Night-Prowlers are the premier experts on stealth technology, however, but as you can imagine, they're not exactly forth-coming. But if you have any favours you can call in or an angle you can use, the Night-Prowlers would be the best source of information regarding anything stealth," she advises.

OP Listen to the following, the best infiltration plan is to hijack a human ship, or board one. Civilian ships move relatively unhindered we could use that as an entry point. Or at the very least consider it an exit strategy.

>B.

You ask her about the specifics of the city of Dubai, where you'll be dropping in. She brings up a large and detailed lattice map of the sprawling city, and begins to explain.

"It's archetypical of a human city. Built in the desert and suffered its share of expansion and decline, but currently serves as the hub to most of humanity's major corporate clans, Weyland-Yutani being chief among them.

She points to a large, blue, pillar-like structure towering above the rest, sitting square in the middle of the city. "The humans call this building the Ishtar Tower. It's nearly 2 kilometres tall, and serves as the headquarters of Weyland-Yutani."

She navigates to several sections around the city and zooms in on ground level. "Most of these will be office and commercial structures, with residential areas spread out around the outskirts. By best estimates, the city houses seventy million people. It'll be claustrophobic, Three-Claw. There are alleys everywhere, and a complex underground transit system which forms a small city of its own.

She downloads the map to a datachip and hands it to you.

We could, if denying the tech to the humans requires us to resort to that. Currently, the mission parameters require a certain discretion.
If it was up to me though, I'd crash the human battleship to the tower. Easier to make the human media believe it was an accident and they can blame Wey Yu for the snafu.
>>

>>26671771
>A.

You ask her about the current political climate on Earth.

She taps the holo-screen and several faces appear. "Humanity itself is governed by a congregation of representatives, each from a different culture and nation. Together, they form the Republic of Earth, which broadly dictates policies of Earth as a single body. Alongside them is the Colonial Authority, a separate hegemony which determines the course of human actions in space, and serves the interests of its colonies. Both jointly wield the two facts of humanity's military, the Colonial Navy and the Terran Army."

The image shifts. "Then there are the corporate clans, who has long served both with and against the interests of the governing bodies. The corporate clans are intricately tied to the government in a manner which is both subtle and parasitic. They drive the corporate and economic development of their race within the political confines dictated by the government. The largest among them, by far, is Weyland-Yutani, a clan which currently wields enough private military assets to rival the Colonial navy."

The holo-screens go dim. "Weyland-Yutani has never gotten along well with the Colonial Authority, and they've butted heads occasionally. And that's about as much as we know."

You thank her.

You ask her about the history of Yautja interaction with the planet, including past hunting expeditions.

"Our interactions with the humans dates back to the inception of their race," she tells you, "and before that, with their progenitors."

"Throughout the aeons, we've watched them grow, and many times, interfered. Earth used to be a favourite hunting ground of ours, and there have been several expeditions sent to Earth. Though there are fewer now, in recent times. The last warrior to visit Earth was Blood-Crescent, of clan Silver-Knife. He went, two years ago, as part of his blooding trials. He completed them, having killed two human warriors and a synthetic warrior."

"Where is he now?" you ask.

You ask her about the solar system and its member planets.

She switches the holo-display to a full map of the Terran solar system. She points to the moon orbiting Earth. "The moon serves as the major communication relay for pushing signal out into deep space. It's also heavily armed, for obvious reasons."

She points to a red planet. "This is Mars, and the chief head quarter of the Colonial Authority." She highlights several massive scaffolds in orbit. "These are shipyards. They are responsible for constructing a large number of the current human military fleet." She points to hundreds of smaller satellites. "Missile platforms. Each one carries a number of high yield atomic missiles launched from an electromagnetic cradle capable of accelerating them to relativistic speeds."

She shifts over to a massive red gas giant on the outskirts of the system, and points your attention to one of the moons. "This is Europa, and houses a large portion of Weyland-Yutani's personnel assets. It also houses a large robotics facility for constructing synthetics. And that's all we know. There will likely be a large number of automated drones patrolling within the system. Avoid them. Questions?"

>>

Nukes are ineffective in space, only in atmosphere are they of use. Anything moving at a percentage of the speed of light packs a HUGE punch. Let me put it this way something about 2000 tons at say 20% of the speed of light would crack a ginormous crater on the moon. Visible with the naked eye on a winter night.
>>
>>26672401
i know the basics of relativism, i was poking fun. something that heavy would be a bloody big missile, though

>>D.

You ask about the best approach to Earth.

She looks the the screen for a moment. "A direct approach should be avoided. Since you'll most likely be in a human ship, it's best if you follow the human navigation lanes. So exit fold space here, at the outskirts of the system, and proceed inward via the highlighted routes."

"If you're looking for good places to hide a ship," She points to a few locations, "these would be good spots. This is a belt of asteroids and other debris. There's plenty of places here to hide from sensor beams. Here, close to the surface of the red gas giant, Jupiter, is also a good spot. There will be plenty of gases among the upper portions of the atmosphere to give you cover, though be careful not to stray in too far, as I don't think the human ship is strong enough to withstand the gravitational pull."

Do you:

A. Ask more about Mars.
B. Ask more about the Moon.
C. Ask more about EB. Ask her what she's working on at the moment.
D. Ask her for her name.urope
>>
From hereon every ounce of energy must used to succeed in this mission. Everything else is secondary, irrelevant.
>>
>>26672456
D. Ask her for her name.

Then leave
>>
>>26672456
how long would it take to get from this hideyhole at jupiter to earth? would it be faster to leave it near venus?

if you cant give me rough figures, its no problem

oh, and C

D, then D
>>

20% of the speed of light is exaton territory and bloody crazy.

The human missiles would be moving at about ~0.1% the speed of light.

Or dense, like depleted uranium or tungsten.

we don't want to leave on our mission with a tease like that, it will just make her want to tear us in half when we return, so satisfy her now, and everyone is happy
>>
>>26672456
D, but all of those need some probing.

Also could we go back to the current human cloaking capabilities? I really think this might become relevant when we are infiltrating the heart of human R&D. If they have reverse engineered the cloaking, we're bound to run into it.

I just finished reading episode 1, op those fucking wrist blades, we could've used them.

>D. Ask her for her name

You thank her for the information, and before you leave, you quip, "By the way, I don't think I've ever caught your name."

She clicks with amusement ."What's wrong with Archivist?" She pauses for a moment, and decides to tell you. "My name is Crimson-Slayer."

"That's... a very uncharacteristic name," you tell her.

"I was very aggressive as a child," she assures you.

You thank her, and bid her farewell.

Do you:

A. Go to the orbital defense station and speak to your mentor about the hijacked ship
B. Brief your teammates and discuss with them about the next mission.
C. Board your ship and head for the Kraken-Slayer.

B, but we will see jackal before we leave on this trip

Yes! We haven't seen jackal for so long. He's our damn mentor.
>>
>>26672570
of course we will, first we brief our team, so they can get their shit in order, then we see jackal, for any advice/strategies, then we go shopping on the kraken
>>

>Ask about the Moon and Europa.
The first is due to the comms, the second is because it is Wey Yu. These two might be working in tandem with one another.

Well, nvm.

>>26672551
B.
I'm thinking Burning Scythe (demo) and Quick Shadow (sniper/infiltrator) for planetside stuff, and Steel Arrow for ship duty and extraction.

Why do I get the feeling that our "safe" choice was actually the most dangerous one imaginable, and we just haven't realized it yet?

dude, we were her first, and she threw us out of a window, then we proceeded to get back up, man up and rolled a nat 20 on the ensuing sex

>B.

Brief your teammates and discuss with them about the next mission.

You leave the archives and make your way back to your team-mates. You find Quick-Shadow up and about, practising with a combi-stick. He is recovering admirably.

They greet you, and you tell them about all that has happened, and the next mission you have been tasked on.

Your team is enthusiastic, and you dive in to the details immediately. You spend the rest of the afternoon briefing them what you know. Now, you must prepare. Your team looks at you expectantly for leadership. You realize they have trusted you implicitly to lead them to battle.

You turn to Ashen-Blade and asks him to get in contact with his human allies. He agrees, and tells you it will be done.

You turn to Burning-Scythe, and tell him to:

A. Use his shipboard experience to help work on the human vessel, making sure it is fit for the mission.
B. Use his expertise as a pilot to help plan a fold-space route to Earth.
C. Use his technical expertise to figure out how to improve the combat capabilities of the captured ship.
>>
>>26672614
To late for regrets now. She told us her name that probably means she owns us or something.

You ask Burning-Scythe to use his expertise as a pilot to help plan a fold-space route to Earth.

"I'll get right on it," he tells you.

You turn next to Quick-Shadow. You tell him to:

A. Use his relationship with the Night-Prowler matriarch (now back in power) to get her cooperation in sharing their trade-mark stealth technology.
B. Use his expertise as a hunter to improve your team's current ranged wargear to perform better in dense urban conditions.
>>

You turn to Quick-Shadow. "We'll be fighting in tight, urban spaces. Do you think you can use your expertise to make improvements to our current ranged weaponry?"

"No problem," he tells you confidently. "I'll get in touch with a few trusted technicians. We'll need a bigger variety of munitions and more flexible optics for our spear guns," he tells you.

We need a nice plasma pistol or some sort of short hand-held firearm. I wonder if the Yautja have silenced weaponry.

I just think in CQC such weapons would be useful. Add in a silencer and we'll be full operator.

I do believe you mean a supressor, otherwise we ain't Opredator, also, I reckon the kraken-slayer (same last name as our librarian?) will be loaded with lotsa goodies
