No sooner than you've landed your plane, you're instantly whisked to Chennault's Office. You are completely unsure as to why, since the damnable event had barely reached his ears. You don't even have time to take off your flight gear or consider a punishment for your unruly students.

The journey took a lot shorter than expected. You suspect that the driver was driving with all the speed he could muster. You're also wondering why Chennault would call you in.

You approach the door with mild trepidation. After all, you're quite sure you have done nothing wrong up till now. Well, except for that time you took off in a P-40 illegally. It was a tense combat situation.

As you are about to knock on the door, you overhear a snippet of conversation.

"...damnit, Claire, stop siding with the Peanut." A gruff, almost weary voice said.
"Joe, it's not about the Peanut. It's about what's feasible." the familiar voice of Chennault replies.
"Burma's still in Allied hands. We have to protect it from the Martians should they overrun Vietnam."
"I understand that, but we've got fucking Martians right here. And by your request, we're trainiing the damn Witches."
"Damnit, Claire, I know! Tooo many fucking squids and too few fucking boots! And the damnable Limeys probably aren't go-" the unknown voice is cut off.
"Burma's in good hands, Joe. The British have a stake in it. Trust them a little, damn it. They're our ALLIES, for Christ's sake." Chennault's almost sighing here.

It does sound rather important, but you were called here. how do you approach this?

They were expecting you, right? So it shouldn't be too much of an issue to make your presence felt. You knock.

A short series of raps punctuate the air, marking your presence. "Come in." Chennault's voice bids you.

You enter. There are two men in the room. One is the familiar scowl of Chennault. You don't know who the other one is, but you're very sure you don't want to make him angry.

"Ah! Witold! Good timing! Allow me to introduce General Joseph Stilwell, overall in charge of the forces in this theater, and... my associate." There is a barely noticable hint of displeasure at the laast part.

"Ah, so you're the one training our Witch assets up here. Pleased to meet you." Stilwell says. He offers you his hand. You oblige.

"So, how are things up here? With all these Martians buzzing around, I presume it's going well?"

How do you respond?

"Truth is, we had a bit of a friendly fire incident today. I was about to deal with it when I was called up here." you respond.

Stilwell is impassive as you deliver the news, but not for long. His face is a rictus of rage as he tries to control his anger. "Who." he asks.

"One of the trainers, sir. It's, uh, somewhat personal. I'll get on it." Your demeanour is cool.
"You'd better be on it! These things have to be ironed out before we the Martians attack in force!" Stilwell is still angry, but he's calmed down. Just a little bit.

"May I take my leave, sirs? I have matters to attend to." You ask. Chennault nods. You take your leave.

"Good to know that there's some competence around here. now, back to strategy..." Stilwell says.

You decide to check up on the Witch that got shot. That sort of thing has an effect on people, especially since she was here to help and not get shot.

You head to the Witch Barracks. Surprisingly enough, there's a small crowd there. It's mostly airmen who heard about the event, though there are a few student witches, those who were not there.

You head into the barracks. Three pair of eyes and the sounds of someone snoring meet you. Those eyes are hostile.

"What the hell happened? Lieutenant Tomoko's bleeding and crying and she's holed up in her room without medical attention." The blonde Belgian asks.

"She's been shot at, but there's nothing wrong. Her face just got nicked." You reply.
"Live bullets? What the hell happened?" Lieutenant Coppens is not happy at all.
"I'm not too sure about this. Something about 'Nanking'..." You're not too sure about this.
"Oh great, not this shit again..."

"What is this... 'Nanking' thing they keep saying?" you ask.

"It was... bad. Pre-Martian War event. The Japanese did terrible things to the people of the city of Nanking." Veronica says.
"It was terrible! People died! They called it 'The Rape of Nanking'!" Elma helpfully adds, though she looks like she's about to cry.

Well, this is new. Miss Shrillypants never said anything about this.

"Tell me more." you reply.
"It's a long story. But the main points of it are this. The Japanese invaded China in 1937. After a long time of fighting and very little gains, they managed to conquer the coastal areas, up to Nanking. And that's when the terrible event happened." Veronica's crisp voice says.
"They r-r-r-ra-" Elma's unable to utter that word.
"We've never actually expected the Japanese to be so... barbaric. And we don't really know most of the details. Everything we have are from the news reports and most of the witnesses agree on one thing: it was real bad. Not to mention centuries of bad blood..." Alice adds.

Well, that explains some of the pent-up aggression.

You approach Tomoko's room. It's locked, predictably. You overhear her sobbing. "...didn't do anything ...never hurt them... just trying to help ... why?"

[ ] Say something.
[ ] Leave her alone for now.

Takeko's reasoning was that Tomoko needed a change of perspective, which is understandable, Tomoko is a big proponent of the 'lone individual ace samurai wins everything' mentality, and really needed the concept of teamwork smacked into her.

That said, I do not imagine getting sent to China was going to be part of the deal.

Well, France thought sending their clearly not fit for teaching ace Witch to China. What the fuck was France thinking?

I'll need to check with planefag regarding the Witch thing, but I suppose it's possible that providing help to allied countries is one of those aid requirements. Japan kinda has to put a Witch there.

>>26782270
In the original novels, yes. This one, though... Not entirely her fault. Both of them protested the posting.

>>
>>26782317

Ahahahaha no.

They're fucking GROUNDED and barred access to any live weaponry until we think they can get their fucking act together. Latrine duty (for an indefinite period of time) is going to be the LEAST of their problems. Outright murder attempts is where we draw the goddamn line.
>>

Corporal punishment?
Though it was more of a WW1 thing, we could try "talking about the weather" with each of them individually.
That we bring with us a small length of metal pipe that fits perfectly into our palm when we close it into a fist is pure coincidence.
>>
"Lieutenant, you really should have that wound looked at. It might get infected. As for your other concerns, we're all here to help." You don't really have any words of comfort to give to her. You hope it was enough.

You return to the common area. "I'll leave the rest to you."

You've still got a few other things to do. What next?

[ ] Bad students need to be punished.
[ ] Deal with the paperwork regarding charges. All the charges.

(Uh, yeah, I really don't have long speeches or shit regarding BEING SHOT AT BY ALLIES. Or an appropriate image.)
>>
>>26782440
Wouldn't work; Witches have shields, and they'd shield themselves, breaking our hand. Sure, we might catch a few off guard, but it wouldn't last forever.

You'd have to tie them to a whipping post and make it a public humiliation thing. Probably need another Witch to do the whipping in order to get past the shield.
>>

This has honestly the first time I'm happy wading into paperwork.

Those witches need sorting out big time.
>>
Ayup, we're gonna be responsible and do our paperwork before dishing out any punishment.

Writing. Please suggest creative punishments for this. Humiliating enough to get them to learn, but without shooting them outright.

They're grounded until further notice, in any case.
>>
>>26782643
It's easy, isn't it? If they don't want to be witches, they can be soldiers. Dig fortifications!
>>
>>26782643

However many hours of latrine duty we can hand to their sorry asses.

No access to anything more lethal than a chopstick.

SURPRISE DRILL SERGEANT NASTY.

I would suggest a public apology to Tomoko as well, but I'm afraid that would just make things worse.
>>
>>26782643
Make them feel closer to the Japenese witch, by that I mean they must all dress as her.
>>
>>26782643
Those girls are now our personal mules, they can sort out all the supplies on their own.

Oh, and they're responsible for cooking their own food now. Make sure they receive the foulest ingredients we have (without actually going rotten and giving them food poisoning).
>>
>>26782739

No, for the love of God no. Let's not inflame tempers here, we don't want them to feel that Tomoko took any part of this punishment any more than is strictly necessary.
>>
No weapons. Only shovels and peelers.

If they refuse to fight with her, we shall find other uses for them. If they complain about that as well, suggest gong back to the farm and maybe figuring out how to use magic to grow more potatoes or putting it to use in a factory.
>>
>>26782643

By the way, failure to adhere to our punishments will automatically result in their asses being shown to a door.

Obviously.
>>
>>26782643
Everyone's already on board with latrine duty.
Also put them on kitchen duty.
They're also on half-rations.

How about making them count every blade of grass in a field?

This has been a very frustrating day. You did not expect your students to actually attempt to murder one of your trainers. And then there's the paperwork to deal with.

You get to work, sorting out all that paper.

As you sort out the charge reports, you notice a familiar name. You quickly leaf through the thick stack. Indecent exposure, drunken conduct, disrespect to a superior officer, inappropriate fraternization...

You read the report regarding her disrespect to a superior officer very carefully. You groan. She... hit on General Stilwell. Oh boy. You put that report down and glance at the thick file. Those could be sorted out later.

Having a feel of how to file one, you proceed on making that charge report for today's incident. It's a very simple affair, with you filling in the details of the incident, right up till the suggested punishments. Witches were usually exempt from court-martials, but this was serious enough to warrant one. As for until then...

There's a lot of things to do around camp and they're gonna have a lot of time to do it.

======================

"Ladies, I am very, very disappointed in you all."

You are now facing the entire class. You are very cross with them.

[ ] Tell it to them straight.
[ ] A very angry speech.
>>
>>26782643

>>
We're gonna speechify them, then.

Writing!
>>
>Tell it to them straight

We should appear to be holding our anger in check though.

If witches usually get out of court martials, and this is worth a court martial even for a witch, we should lead with that fact. Let that stew for a while before we continue. If they are, indeed, executed for attempted murder of a superior officer their family will be charged for the bullet. We are of course doing what we can to prevent this but the General is red in the face with fury and we have out orders.

Then pass out mops and entrenching tools and tell them that since we cannot allow them near weapons until this matter is solved we shall have to find other means to support the war. Doubtless a witch with magic can do the jobs of any number of janitors, which will free many men for fighting.

Who knows, maybe one of them will be remembered in witch history as the one who discovered a new and effective means of magically cleaning multiple barracks or peeling several bags of potatoes in a single hour.
>>
>>26783156
>>26783215

Historically speaking, The Allies were not in charge of the Chinese Nationalist Army.

The court martial is technically not in the Allies' hands, but in Generalismo Chiang Kai-Shek's.
>>
The girls are nervous as you begin.

"I am very disappointed for a number of reasons. First, in spite of my many, many attempts to teach you why, you have decided that a personal conflict is more important than taking the fight to the Martians. Second, you all have lost my trust in you. Third, you have also rendered yourselves unfit for battle, despite all we have done. And lastly, you have shot a superior officer, which is a capital offense, ESPECIALLY during now."

"I am aware that there is a lot of bad blood betwen you and one of my instructors, but you are all SOLDIERS. As long as we're at war with these Martians, I cannot tolerate INSUBORDINATION, especially in training!"

"All of you are hereby grounded until further notice. That also means your continued education will be suspended as well. Those responsible will be found and court-martialed, unless you want to own up."

"Bunk inspection will be an hour from now. Now get to work. DIS-MISSED!"

You have never seen them scatter that fast.

What do you do?

That report's gonna be real hot once it gets delivered. Fortunately, that can be done later, since you've got a Witch with a wound to check with.

She's already getting her wound tended to by the time you reach there. You are quite relieved to see that it was superficial. Her eyes are red and she's still shaken from the experience. Elma's already trying to comfort her. Or something.

You glumly notice Carla happily snoring away. Alice and Veronica are nowhere to be seen. They're probably keeping an eye on the student witches.

They don't notice you as you exit their living space. Just the report left.

======================

You catch Chennault at a very bad time. You surmise that his conversation with Stilwell had not gone well.

"Witold, just drop the report. I'll look at it in the morning. If we have time. I don't care as long as they're grounded until we can sort this out." Chennault motions to a report in his hands.

"The Martians are attacking."
