There are maybe 300 cops that are working this case at all, much less to the point it affects their family lives (there are 34k cops in the NYPD). They have a total of probably around 1000 family members. Those family members have a total of what, 5 good friends each, tops? 5000 people, then. ~12 bits of information. And that's probably too generous; are there really 300 cops working this case? Do their families really have that many friends?

That's a drop of 11 bits. For comparison, that's the same as the drop in bits in Death Note when Light reveals his knowledge of police records, which also happens to be his single largest mistake in terms of loss of seclusion in bits.

“But, during an incident, a cop mistakenly shot someone- a bystander- my father had two choices as the cop ran- get away or stay and save the person. He stayed and was arrested- and when he went to jail- apparently someone he stole from wanted vengeance- they had him taken out in jail.”

She looks upwards at the moon overhead. “I want to try to make my father proud by continuing his legacy.
