Where do I begin? From the beginning, yes, but when was that beginning?

Well, I suppose my arrival at the mansion is as good a start as any. It was morning, barely past sunrise, and I had hired a cab from the village at the foot of the hill. It took a while to find a driver willing to take me up to the mansion, but throwing enough money at people tends to solve most problems eventually.

"I know your type." We were nearing the mansion, and the driver, who hadn't said a word the entire way, suddenly spoke up. "You go in there, wanting to kill the mistress and become a hero, and you never come out again. You're the sixth this month already, you know that? And who do you think the mistress takes out her anger on? Us. You all spout your crap about wanting to save us and you never think about what will happen if you fail, no? Well, we're here."

(continued in next post)
>>
I hadn't expected that outburst, but I can't say I was surprised by it either. That was, after all, one of the reasons why the Church had finally approached me. I didn't care about their God or their mission to save the village, but they paid well and had finally realized that their own vampire hunters just weren't going to cut it.

So here I was, staring up at the rather forbidding-looking mansion as the cab drove off. My job was simple - get in, kill the vampire inside. You'll notice that "get out" wasn't on the agenda, and frankly I don't think the Church gave a damn about whether I made it out alive. After all, if I didn't, that was one less heretic they had to hunt down.

There was a wall around the mansion, with a gate at the front. I had no way of telling if it was guarded, but I couldn't see any other way in.

[ ] I walked up to the gate. If it was guarded, then I'd just have to fight my way through.
[ ] I walked around the mansion, keeping out of sight. Maybe there was a back door or something.

>sneak around

Well, no sense in engaging in a fight this early. The problem of whether or not I could defeat the hypothetical guard there aside - although I was pretty sure that I could - the fact remained that I didn't want to get seen any earlier than I had to. The job was hard enough without the entire mansion trying to kill me from the start. Not that they wouldn't all try to kill me eventually, but at least I got a bit of a headstart this way.

Careful to stay hidden from view, I moved off the road and tried to find a side entrance. Tried, I say, because if there was one, then it was very well hidden indeed. The mansion was surrounded by dense forest, and while it wasn't the easiest terrain to move through, it did give me enough cover to approach the fence. It was a typical cast-iron fence, the type you might find around European mansions, which wasn't suprising considering that this was a European mansion. Vampire mansion, maybe, but still a European mansion.

While walking, I took stock of what I had on me, mentally preparing myself to kill. My trusty leather whip was, as usual, curled around my right wrist, ready to lash out at any monsters I came across. I carried several throwing knives on my person too, within easy access. Not silver knives, as I had learnt the hard way that silver is soft and tends to dent when hit by other hard things, but silver-plated steel, which still repelled evil creatures while losing none of its battle effectiveness.

(continued)
>>
Another interesting thing, or things, I carried was a few bottles of holy water. They weren't from the Church; the Church pretty much near hated me and wasn't about to give me something as valuable as that. Instead, I had created these by mixing my blood with water. It's a long story, but suffice to say my lineage has left me in possession of a few holy powers myself.

Then there was the usual stock of healing potions - or rather, healing candy, as potions tended to leak when you got thrown around a bit. I had only three of these, and I would have to make them count. There were a few other oddities I carried with me, but those were of no use in vampire-slaying.

Anyway, my walk around the fence turned up nothing. There were no side gates, and neither did I find any holes in the fence or anything. That left me with two options - one, climb the fence. Not something I wanted to do, considering the spikes on the fence and how visible, and vulnerable, that would leave me. Two, go through the gate. I didn't really want to do this either, but if there was no guard, it would make entering a lot easier. If there was one, however... well, let's just say that even the best case scenario wouldn't be pretty.

>go back to the gate

Well, high risk equals high gain, as they say. Figuring it would be best to just take my chances with the gate, I circled back around and walked boldly up to the front gates.

Nothing assaulted me as I approached - a pretty good start, I thought. Well, that probably meant more resistance waiting inside, but I would just take what I could get for now. Speaking of resistance, as I neared the gate, I happened to glance up and notice a few specks of black against the barely risen sun.

Bats. Vampire. I didn't even need to think before my body reacted, casting quickly around for the closest bit of shelter and ducking straight into it. Said shelter happened to be the guardhouse, which also just happened to contained a red-haired girl. Thankfully, she was asleep.

(continued)
>>
I let out my breath. Well, that explained the lack of resistance, at least. A short wait more, until I was sure the bats had gone - I didn't know if they'd spotted me, or I'd hidden in time, and I certainly did not want to find out yet - then I walked back out the other door into the grounds and began to examine the mansion.

It wasn't a particularly large dwelling by vampiric standards, only a four-or-so floors mansion instead of your typical castles and whatnot, but it did have a large clock tower rising from one side. I stifled a groan - experience had taught me that I would probably have to fight my way through that.

The vampire residing here was known as the Scarlet Devil, and looking at the bright red walls of the mansion, I could see why. Even the windows, which there were plenty of on each floor, were tinted a light pinkish-red. Speaking of windows, I had yet to make my entrance into the mansion proper. While walking around it earlier, I had seen no doors other than the main one, which was now open - almost invitingly so. Suspicious, but it was an easy way in. Of course, I could always break and enter through a window instead, but which one?

>go through the front door

I glanced up at the mansion, carefuly surveying the available windows. The ones on floors higher than the ground floor were out of the question; I didn't think I was good enough to climb up to them. Well, maybe I was, but I most definitely did not want to risk dying of a broken neck at this stage.

That left the first floor windows, or the front door. The tinted windows made them hard to see through, and so I couldn't discern what room was behind which window. I could just pick a random window and break it, but I didn't really want to run into a room full of killer fairy maids, or something like that. And anyway, no point expending all that energy when I could just stroll in the front door.

I walked through the door, half-expecting some hidden trap to spring out and smash me to pieces or something, but nothing happened. It entered into a huge hallway, decorated with paintings and softly lit lamps. And a red carpet, which I found myself slightly amused by. I might be trying to kill the Scarlet Devil, but I could still appreciate her sense of humor.

There was nothing in the hallway, but a little further down, I could see what looked like stairs leading both up and down. There were no doors leading anywhere that I could see, but I might be able to find some a little further on. Anyway, I had to decide where to go. The vampire's quarters were likely to be in one of two places - either the lady's quarters on the top floor, or in a coffin in the basement.

Death in Touhou is a hilarious event for most of its character.

Youkai can die permanently if they are completely forgotten, even in Gensokyo, or if they are possessed by an Evil Spirit or whatever Gensokyo calls them.

>>
>go up the stairs

Well... I guessed that the vampire lived underground, which meant she would be waiting down those stairs. Which was, coincidentally enough, exactly where I didn't want to start. No escape route, for one.

In that case, I would start from the top and work downwards. You might find the concept of leveling up stupid, but I can assure you that it applies in real life as well. I was fighting youkai, which were harmed less by my weapons and more by the faith invested in said weapons. More youkai kills equaled more faith in their weapon-ness, and stronger weapons. Strange, I know, but who was I to complain when it worked to my advantage?

At the top of the stairs, I came to a landing with 3 doors. The first was entirely metal, and bore a simple etching of clock hands on its surface. No prizes for guessing where it led. The second was far grander, huge, wooden double doors with fancy carvings. It probably led to the library, or something like that.

The third, however, just screamed "boss room". It was a plain door, the kind that you might find in a bedroom, but it had not just one, or two, but three separate keyholes under the knob.

I groaned. So that was the kind of game the vampire wanted me to play...?

She also created those rules so that Humans wouldn't go all Vampire Hunter on their shit and start mobbing up to kill Youkai. There's just so much wrong with your post. The rules were made so the youkai and humans could keep playing card games for the purposes of harvesting faith and not kill eachother. If the humans get killed, the youkai are fucked because human belief in youkai is what feeds youkai, so if the humans inside die, playtime is ogre because the outside world doesn't believe in monsters anymore and if there's no one left to believe in them, they'll all "starve".

The clock tower... was a confirmed boss. Mini-boss, at the very least. And I wasn't equipped to handle that at all yet. I mean, I hadn't even encountered any fairies on the way up.

But first... I grabbed the knob of the plain door and twisted. Or tried to twist, at least, because it refused to turn. Not a problem, I had lockpicks-

"Oh, come on," I muttered flatly to myself, staring at the twisted mess that had been a lockpick before I tried it on one of the locks. "Fucking magic."

I would have to do things the vampire's way, then. I didn't like it one bit, and was starting to get the feeling that I might, for the first time, be just a little out of my depth.

Well, that left only the library door. Cautiously, I pushed one of the double doors open, and entered.

The fog began to spill out the moment I opened the door. It curled around my ankles like a... like a wisp of dense fog that was almost certainly magical in origin. As I stepped further into the library, it began to part slightly, and what I had assumed to be walls previously revealed themselves to be huge, floor-to-wall bookshelves, all several times my height. And as I had suspected, a little walking revealed that it was a labyrinth.

I groaned again. Not for the first time, I was beginning to feel like the vampire was just toying with me. It wasn't a feeling I was used to — I was still alive, after all — and it didn't bode well for my future. Still, this wasn't the time to dwell on it. I had to focus on the damnable bookshelf labyrinth first.

...Footsteps. By the sound of it, human footsteps, or at least humanoid. As I strained my eyes, my whip ready to snap out at a moment's notice, a weak voice reached my ears, accompanied by a figure slowly shuffling towards me out of the fog.

Now that I think about it, is it possible that the only reason Yukari went through such a circuitous method to get to the moon was to deliberately make herself seem weak so as to lure the Lunarians off guard and allow Yuyuko to sneak in?

Of course it hasn't been stated. But assuming she kept training her, it should've roughly been three years in Gensokyo since SSiB.

I mean, I could probably look through all the Prologues/Endings/Epilogues and count weeks, seasons and shit, but I'm too lazy for that, so it's very possible I'm wrong not only on the training, but also the time. Anyway, time passes in Gensokyo and it amuses me that before long, our cute little girls will be hitting 30.

The setting isn't nearly as dark as most of fanon seems to think.

There's stuff like one of the official mangas showing Yuuka and other alledgedly extremely dangerous youkai standing around in a crowd of random villagers, and nobody gives a shit.
And the world guide books are in-universe writings, with Yukari being the writer's editor for the texts. There's stuff in the books that's contradictory or unlikely, like claiming that Yamame is extremely dangerous and hostile, while her ingame dialogue is something along the lines of "Haha you're some crazy humans to come underground, anyway the party is over there" before the PCs slap her shit.
Even the stuff about people from the outside world being abducted for food is probably false if you read between the lines.

Please remember that Hieda wrote these material books in universe, meaning they're from the viewpoint of a normal human. They are a tad biased, guess what.

But yes, Touhou isn't dark at all. It's fairly fluffy even, harsh words thrown around don't annoy anyone and it's all forgotten the next day. Save for some personal stuff, but that's character-specific.

That's exactly what I'm saying. And in addition Yukari is implied to have rigged the contents a bit, to make sure the youkai still sound scary.

Even though it's not grimdark at all, it's still bittersweet when you think about it, because the youkai as a whole can never truely be friends with the humans, since they need fear/belief to live.

"H-help..."

As the figure neared, it began to resolve itself into a young woman, not much older than me. Her black hair hung unkempt down to her shoulders, and her dress looked rather old and worn. Her cry of help was hoarse as she stumbled towards me.

"Help me... the librarian..."

Librarian...? I had definitely heard of this before... ah, yes, the infamous Voile Library and it's magician keeper. The exact details of the rumor varied from person to person, but it was generally agreed that the world's greatest trove of magical tomes was kept here, and its keeper was one of the last few true magicians.

A bit more prodding revealed that the woman's name was Mara, and like me, she had come here on a vampire hunt. The difference was that she had challenged the gate guard and lost, and been captured and given to the librarian to toy with as a result.

"This entire library is... magical. You can't get out... unless she lets you... or you kill her..."

...Great, my first boss fight of the mansion was going to be against a legendary magician. Just great.

In a weird sense, kinda. Those things that the real world doesn't believe in anymore gets sent to Gensokyo. It's that belief in things that keeps them alive. It's why it's a common refuge for gods losing their powers and followers (see Kanako and Suwako).

"I can... take you to her. I remember... the way... when I escaped from here..." Mara began to walk back into the fog, pausing to look back at me when I didn't follow. "Don't you want to... get out...?"

On one hand, I hadn't managed to live till now by ignoring my instinct, and said instinct was now telling me to be very suspicious of Mara. There was just too much that was strange about her — such as the sheer convenience of me entering and immediately bumping into her, and being guided straight to the librarian. My instinct screamed at me to just attack her, and if it was wrong, well, too bad.

On the other hand... it could mean a lot less time and energy wasted wandering around the bookshelf labyrinth, and whatever Mara was trying to pull, it clearly didn't involve killing me right away. At the very least, it would be interesting to find out what she was doing.

Here Mara seemed to shudder, drawing in on herself a little. "I waited for her to be distracted, then just... ran. Please... I don't want to talk about it..."

Well, that seemed to be all I was getting out of her for now. "Lead the way, then."

I followed her cautiously, making sure to stay behind her and keep her hands in my sight as we walked in silence.

Oh, remember when I complained about not meeting any fairies earlier? The library had apparently decided to make up for it, by throwing all sorts of minor enemies at me. They were mostly just weak golems patrolling the shelves which I could take out with a flick of my whip, at least.

Mara, for a supposed vampire hunter, was surprisingly useless in combat. All she did was dodge the golems and cower at the side while they went for me, then grimace every time I shattered one into pieces.

I had no idea how long or how far we walked, but Mara eventually stopped just before a corner turn. "She's.. just around here..." Her voice had dropped to a whisper. "I don't want to see her again, so... I'll wait here..."

Well. Whatever Mara was playing at, this was it, I guessed. I could trust her and see what was waiting around the corner, or give in to my instinct and... attack her? I didn't really know.

Of course, there was also the possibility of it being an ambush, and either way, both Mara and whoever or whatever was around the corner would just gang up on me.

Flandre just plays rough. And if you can't keep up you get vaporised, not eviscerated. Evisceration is messy, and Sakuya has enough work already.

I wish he'd get around to fleshing out more of the characters with actual canon. So many of them are boring and fanon is generally retarded.

It's a cool world if you actually get down to the lore or whatever you want to call it. Like how there's a reason for everyone firing thousands of lasers in preference to just outright destroying things. Or the politics, which are actually pretty neat.
>>
>>27418065
He leaves it fairly vague on purpose. It pertains a certain sense of mystery if nothing is clear cut, and leaves enough room for fans to do their own thing.

It is definitely kind of lacking, but I'm sucking up any background information like a sponge whenever they drop some and get all giddy about it. I think that's the way ZUN wants me to feel.

I highly advise you to read the manga, they do a good job fleshing out the characters out a bit more beyond their little conversations pre/post-battle. Fanon might be retarded at times, but there's plenty of stuff I like in it. Mostly the comedic stuff, grimdark doesn't get me. As long as you keep it separate from the actual canon, it's fine.

Yukari is just plain weird, even from a Youkai's point of view. She's needlessly complicated, roundabout and scheming, pulling shit that pisses off lots of people for perfectly valid/vain reasons just because she can, sometimes because she must and all of this mostly with the greater good of Gensokyo in mind.
She's aware of the fragile balance of their world and does everything that requires more subtlety than barging in Lasers asparking and knocking someone a peg down, but it doesn't stop her from being a dick about it.

I think the only thing she's shy to openly admit is that she's taken a liking to Reimu. She hangs out way too often around the shrine to simply cite the barrier or other shenanigans as the reason.

>SDM CYOA
SDM gets way too much attention and stories written about them as it is. I'd like to see a CYOA of the Komeiji family for once, but so few people seem to understand anything about them even though they're one of the most interesting factions.

SDM is easily creatively interpreted as a minefield of bad ends, is full of popular characters, etc.

Chireiden is pretty isolated from other locations and doesn't have a lot of people in it. A CYOA about that would inevitably end up with the readers trying to woo either Satori or Okuu.
>>
>>27420712
In the character ranking battles, the top ten are usually either protagonists and SDM.
>>
>>27420712
Not really. There's a whole city around Chireiden. Cast of four main characters there as opposed to SDM's six, and Parsee doubles as a gatekeeper, and Yuugi as... well, not exactly something but definitely on the same grounds.

SDM has first mover advantage and the first sizeable cast of connected characters. Only the Myouren temple's got that number beat with Byakuren, Shou, Ichirin, Unzan, Murasa, Nue, Kogasa(?), Mamizou and Kyouko being connected to it.

You don't really need a huge cast to make a good story, all you need is good characters. And some of the best stories of Chireiden often involve their association and interaction with the Moriya's.

The palace has 4 people (3 of which spend a lot of time somewhere else) while the mansion has 5(6 if you count Koakuma). Neither is huge, but there's a significant difference.

>And some of the best stories of Chireiden often involve their association and interaction with the Moriya's.
Moriyas don't have much to do with them outside the narrowly avoided nuclear disaster incident. Also, CYOA storywriting tends to be way different compared to regular fanfiction and doujins.

The main reason they get the most stories is only due to their popularity.

The oni are the enforcers and bosses of old hell. When they moved underground, they promised to keep the evil spirits in check, surface youkai in return promising to never go down themselves. Promises are a big thing to oni, which is why you have up to 6 youkai watching over you, because they all thought that major shit went down. Orin was probably beaten pretty hard after the incident; I guess that's why she went topside to chill at the shrine.

So, Yuugi is a pretty big shot in the underworld. You're probably pretty safe if you get on her good side. However, since you need to be super tough for that, it kinda defeats the purpose.

I wish I wasn't such a scrub tier GM, I kind of want to run an underworld 2hu game.

This is completely wrong. Yukari developed the spell card rules with Reimu's collaboration. Remilia may have been involved.

There's no youkai in Gensokyo that could challenge Reimu "for real" save maybe Yukari thanks to her border powers and flight powers. Reimu can literally fly above reality.

Spell card rules were implemented not to give Reimu and humans a chance, but because an invading vampire (probably Remilia) threatened MAD in her attempt to take over Gensokyo.
