You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to be RATHER unpleasant.

Yesterday was pretty eventful. You spent the day with Princess Luciana, had dinner with the King, sketched a portrait of Nicolette, and got a magic lesson from Sylvie.

And then you actually managed to conceptualize Script, the basis of using magic!

But hopefully, your legs won't fall asleep today...

>Guard Rank: RAT
>Congratulations, you are now a pathetic Rat!
>Snakes eat rats... but rats are ranked above them?
>Though she still isn't fond of you, the Princess dislikes you a bit less!
>You're still not considered a person, though.

You sit up in your bed, fully rested and in -quite- a good mood on account of last night's accomplishment. Deciding not to waste any time, you quickly get bathed and dressed, and then look out your bedroom window...

...and once again, you've managed to wake up just before dawn. With a few hours left before you have to go meet the Princess for breakfast, you wonder how you'll spend this bit of free time...

Though you did read that book about "sensitive ladies" last night, you still have two other books that you borrowed from Gerhard. Since you have a bit of time, you decide to read through "A History of the Kingdom of Granache."

According to the book, Granache was founded about 1500 years ago by Sivarios, an elemental spirit of water. Though the kingdom was originally about twice its current size, the entire area was thrown into chaos during the Fall of the Old Kings, and various warlords managed to whittle off their own bits of land during this time.

After about fifteen years of war, a new army was formed around the son of Sivarios, a human. Together with his close friend, a foreign mercenary, he led his forces to victory over his enemies and eventually reclaimed nearly all of the kingdom under his name. But as he was but a mere human, he doubted his ability to maintain power as his father had, and so he split the kingdom into two parts.

Here we go. I didn't take too many variations, of course it's not easy to get a good angle.
>>
>>27493918
>[2/2]

The new king kept the southern portion of the kingdom, retaining the name of Granache. The northern region was given to mercenary who helped him regain his throne, and that was the birth of the kingdom of Marconetti.

The book then goes over the next nine hundred years or so of history, with Granache and Marconetti maintaining a close relation throughout the entire time. Together, they fought off invaders, helped each other during times of famine and plague, and made it to the current age of peace.

The final chapter ends with a passage marking the birth of the king at the time's two sons, Thierri and Raoul. With two heirs to the throne, the writer seems to be hopeful about the future of the kingdom.

Having learned quite a bit, you close the book and then place it on top of "A gentleman's guide to sensitive ladies," making a point to return both books to Gerhard later.

You've just read an entire book...

...realizing that you pretty much lost track of time, you decide to head out and figure out what time it is. Getting up from your desk, you attack your sword to your belt, open your door, and...

"...Melanie?"

Surprised that you opened your door just as she was about to knock, Melanie lets out a squeak as she loses her balance and falls backwards.

"Um, are you okay?" you ask as you help her back to her feet.
"Yes... sorry about that," Melanie says as she adjusts her glasses and brushes off her skirt.

"No, it was my fault," you say, laughing nervously. "Um... am I late?"

Melanie is one of Princess Marianne's personal maids, so there's a fair chance that she set her to your room to fetch you...

"No, not at all," Melanie says as she adjusts her glasses again. "The Princess won't be going down for breakfast for at least another forty-five minutes," she says, doublechecking with her pocketwatch.
"Oh, okay," you say with a sigh of relief. "So, what brings you to my room?"
"...ah, that's right..."

Melanie fishes around in her apron pocket, and pulls out a small bag.

"I ran into Mr. Arnaud on the way to the Princess's room, and he instructed me to deliver this to you," she says as she hands you the bag.

You then open it, and find...

"Whoa! Ten gold coins!? This is enough to buy a house, why would Arnaud..." you stammer in utter disbelief.
"That is your first month's pay," Melanie replies matter-of-factly.
"...I get paid THIS MUCH? I mean, this is like a third of the prize for winning the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament, to think that this is a month's pay for the job itself..."

You were pretty happy with just the room and food, but to get paid such a large amount of money...

"Yes, the King likes to make sure that important personnel are paid well. It keeps them loyal and reduces the chances that they'll be lured by bribes. And as the one charged with protecting his only daughter, your position is very important," Melanie replies, looking at her pocketwatch once again. "Did you have any other questions?"

"Hm, I'll have to find one the next time I'm out," you reply.

"Ah... that's right," Melanie says, snapping her fingers. "The King will be spending the day with the Princess tomorrow, so you'll be off then."
"Eh? But if she's with the King, won't both of them need protection?" you ask.
"The King is quite capable of defending both himself and the Princess," Melanie says, adjusting her glasses. "And Sir Vincent is sure to be with them for at least part of the day, so you have no need to worry."

Melanie then checks the time again, and then looks at you.

"I need to go meet the Princess now, so I suppose I'll be seeing you later," she says with a bow.

Not if you can man up and work with it. Even if you've been run through, and you're bleeding from your head, and you're coughing up more blood, and your eye isn't working and all you hear is static.

But even if we're a batshit insane animu style protagonist with a sword obsession, the princess is still very fragile and delicate, and most definitely not a man.

Putting the bag of coins in your pocket, you head downstairs to wait for the Princess. Though Melanie said that she won't be down for a while, it never hurts to be early, right?

Standing in your usual spot in front of the entrance to the dining hall, you look around... there are a few maids and butlers scurrying to and fro, and nothing particularly interesting happening... so you decide that now is a decent time to practice conceptualizing Script.

"Sword. Knife. Fire."

With each word you say, Script forms in the air in front of you. It lingers for as long as you concentrate on what you said to form it, vanishing the instant that your concentration slips. With this in mind, you say a few random words and see how long you can hold the Script that they form.

This continues for a little while, until your attention is broken by the sound of a familiar voice.

"...you've actually learned how to use magic? I can't say that I expected you to even be capable of such a thing," Princess Marianne says, an expression of slight surprise on her face.

"Well, uh- yeah," you blurt out, having been taken by surprise by her sudden arrival. "It seemed like it could be helpful for my job, and I had the opportunity to get some instruction," you explain.
"I see," the Princess replies.
"Plus, I wouldn't want to bore you with a samey routine every morning, Princess," you say with a bow.

You can hear the maids surrounding the Princess start to giggle, but she herself only sighs and turns her back to you.

"Come on, I only came down here because I knew this is where you were waiting," she says, motioning for you to follow.
"Eh? Why, is there something going on?" you ask, hurrying behind her.
"Yes. Luciana is about to head back home, and I would like to see her off," she replies.

You follow the Princess to the gate without saying anything else, though her maids continue to chatter amongst themselves and to her as you walk. But as you get closer to the gate, the maids grow quiet and eventually fall back as the two of you enter alone.

The gate area is filled with several guards, surrounding the same carriage that brought Princess Luciana to the castle the other day. As you aproach, they seem to move out of the way, and...

"Marianne! Mr. Reinhold! You two came to see me off? How thoughtful!" Princess Luciana exclaims as she hurries towards the two of you.

>>27496238
We're not here to be anyone's friend. The princess is not interested in having us (or anyone, really) as a friend. I see no reason we should not oblige that.

In fact, princess Marianne seems like a very very serious and calculating kind of person, and I respect that in a person who will eventually inherit the kingdom (queendom?). We would do well to match her demeanor, at least when with her.

Letting the princess speak first is not being boring, it's showing proper respect to royalty.

not saying anything wasnt the suggestion though. in the quoted post;

"It's a shame to see you go, Princess. You too, Takamaru," you say, nodding to him.

Luciana then turns to you, starry-eyed.

"Oh, Mr. Reinhold! I'll miss you too!" she says, trapping you into a hug before you can react.
"U- um..."
"Haha! I really will miss your wit," she laughs, letting you go. "And it's ever so much fun to tease you!"
"I'm not sure that I'll miss being teased, but..." you say, laughing nervously.

As the tearful goodbye continues, you hear footsteps approaching... and see -that-person.-
