Waiting was always the most difficult part of any deployment. Contrary to what a lot of nonmilitary people believed, being a soldier didn't always consist of the excitement of battle. In fact, 99% of a soldier's time was spent just waiting for something for the other 1% to happen.

In this particular case, you were waiting for the recon team to return to the Bastion. They've been gone for almost two weeks now with only intermittent progress reports. Things were kept quick and brief to minimize the Eruseans tracing their signals.

Plus, you know the waiting period has been harder on some people. Charlotte was constantly fretting over what might be happening to Falynn, and Simo was just in an eternally simmering mood when Morgan wasn't around. Hell, even Menedez is seems a bit troubled as well.

Well, at last you had something to distract you, considering you got a note from Nemo requesting your presence at her lab.

"Hey, Menende- I mean- Sir, is it okay if I come in?" You ask a bit meekly.

"Ah, not at all." Menendez forces a smile and motions for you to come inside. "Would you like a drink?"

"No thanks." You shake your head.

"Well then," Menendez then picks up a stack of undoubtedly classified documents and stores them away in a drawer safely out of your sight. "What brings you here today?"

Well, Merc didn't update the pastebin so I don't recall the exact specifics of Heroic Bravery. But I believe the first effect was ignoring Morale checks when critically injured. Which is the only time I can think of a morale check being made, that and if your people start dropping. Morale is probably the least used stat.

We've never had to make one, or at least it wasn't obvious. But there is a Morale stat, which relates to how well you can keep together under pressure. But they pressure is never really that high. Raising Morale is like an empty level IMO.

There, emblazoned on the front page, is a full page picture of a Gallian Falcon chasing down an Erusean Longsword, the latter plane going down in flames as tracers punch into its hull. However, what really shocked you was the clearly visible ribbon painted on the Falcon's tail. The Headline reads "MYSTERY RIBBON FIGHTER THWARTS ERUSEAN INVASION!"

Reading further, you blink. "Did she REALLY take down an entire squadron of fighters?"

Menendez laughs. "It's just an exaggeration. She only took down half a squadron."

Yeah, only.

"So, does this mean we're at war, then?" You ask.

"Not quite, but it's damn close." Menendez sighs. "There's a lot of debate over where exactly the fighting took place. The Eruseans are saying it was over international waters while San Salvacion claims it was in their sovereign airspace. But, in either case, Erusea is holding itself back."

"I guess that's good." You nod. "Does anybody know.-?"

"No, we haven't released Lara's identity to the public, especially because the Erusean government is demanding San Salvacion hand over the 'Ribbon Fighter' for war crimes. But, I doubt it's going to remain secret for long."

"I see..." You frown.

People always seemed to forget that without all that extra armor and MG ammo you had to carry all the time in battle, you were actually pretty damn fast, especially if you're just running in a straight shot.

Charlotte's confident grin melts to a gasp of horror when she sees you overtake her with little apparent effort. She makes a valiant effort to try and catch up, but it's too little too late.

"Ha!" You laugh as you slide to as stop. "Looks like somebody is getting a free lunch!"

"Since when... did you get so fast?" Charlotte pants as she finally catches up.

"Weight training does wonders." You laugh.

"Oh god! Lucas! Charlotte! Thank god you're here! You gotta help me!" You hear a familiar voice cry out.

"What?" You blink and turn to the source of the voice and you see Runaround tied up and attached to a line, which is being suspended in the air by a balloon. "Runaround, what the hell are you doing here?!"

"It's Nemo man, she's freaking crazy!" Runaround wriggles uselessly in his restraints. "She's forcing me to participate in her sick experiments!"

"You know, I'm actually tempted to see how this turns out." Charlotte adds in.

"I... I guess you're right." You frown. "Am I that easy to read?"

"Impossibly easy." Nemo says without skipping a beat.

"So, uh... what exactly is this rig for, anyways?" Charlotte asks, pointing to the line and balloon. "We trying to make Runaround fly?"

"In a way, yes." Nemo says, striding forward and pointing to the sky. "Barfbag should be arriving soon."

Sure enough, you see a black speck in the sky as the Barfbag's Skyranger makes an approach to the Bastion. However, he's not lining up with the airstrip. In fact, he's actually headed in your direction, or more specifically, the direction of the balloon. Runaround takes one look at the approaching plane and he realizes what's going to happen.

"Oh cra-"

You notice that Barfbag's Skyranger has a wierd, v-shaped protrusion on its nose. He flies it directly into the balloon, snagging the line and yanking Runaround screaming into the air.

"Ummmm, what the heck did I just see?" You blink.

"A new development. The Skyhook Emergency Extraction System." Nemo says, pulling out a pair of binoculars to watch Runaround dangling in the sky behind the Skyranger as it soars away. "Intended to use to extract personnel in areas unsuitable for airplane landings."

"You know, I seem to get the feeling that you ENJOY watching Runaround suffer." Charlotte points out.

"Don't be silly. My motivations are all neutral and scientifically driven." Nemo says dryly. "Any enjoyment I get out of the act is purely a convenient side effect."

"They're... they're going to bring him back, right?" You ask.

"Yeah, Barfbag will loop around and bring him back eventually." Nemo replies.

A few minutes later, the Skyranger returns and makes a safe landing on the runway. Runaround immediately hops out of the door, his legs shaking. He points an accusatory finger at Nemo.

"Y-you're freaking crazy, girl!" He says before running off.

Huh, you guess he was okay, then.

"Oh well. He served his purpose anyways." Nemo shrugs. "Sorry, but I don't have any new development for you at the moment. Test results for one of my aircraft projects have just come in and I need to analyze them."

"Ah, well, pity then." You sigh.

"Well, I could always use an assistant to help me-"

"Sorry Nemo, but we were just about to go get some lunch!" Charlotte butts in and grabs your arm. She was never the type to enjoy numbers and paperwork.

"Uhh... see you, Nemo!" You say as you get pulled away.

"Okay, let's get this over with." Charlotte frowns. "What do you want for lunch?"

Normally, the food was free and paid for by the company, but that was the usual unappetizing cafeteria slop. Stuff like real food often had to be smuggled in, or was skimmed by logistics officers for their own use, so a little black market was formed as a way for the Demons to get access to decent food. Well, prices varied depending on what you wanted.
