Konoko is now staring at her plate, pushing around noodles with her fork while Buffgirl McBluehair is patting her on the shoulder, awkwardly trying to raise her spirits. You glance over at Riritu, still crouched behind a fern, watching Konoko eat with shining eyes. Anon still is nowhere in sight.

You amble over as casually as possible, and give Riritu a nudge, "Hey, you seen Anon at all?"
"Mmmhmm," Riritu whimpers, wiping tears from her eyes, "He...He's so romantic!"

He looks back at you and raises his hands in utter exasperation. You roll your eyes, point at Leopold's flunky. Leopold's scowlocity reduces by 10%, and he walks over to his minion, and whispers in his ear. The minion stands to attention, then strides past, going deeper in to the restaurant.

Well, who knows what the fuck's going on there.

"I wish someone would watch over me..." Riritu whispers breathlessly, staring up at Anon. You glance up. The combination of poorly trimmed beard, hobo coat, and bottle of booze kind of ruins the fantasy in your opinion, but whatever, different strokes and all that. You advise Riritu to stay still, and then sneak over to Konoko's side of the restaurant.

Konoko looks up at Leopold's presence, and gives an uncertain smile. You decide to snoop over too, staying behind Konoko. And staying out of arm's reach of blue hair.

"I'm dreadfully sorry about that," Leopold's voice has a slight amount of oiliness in it, "Business to take care of, you know how these things are," He gives a smile as he sits down.

"No, no, it's okay-" Konoko waves her hand, "Ah, you were talking about your interest in, uh, my sports career, right?"
"Yesss, about that," You can hear the hesitation in Leopold's voice, "It's just at this moment-"
"It's about yesterday's soccer game, right?" Konoko sounds sad at that.
"Well, yes."

You hear a clang from behind, and you glance back and up to the ceiling. Okay, now there are girder's or something on the ceiling? Leopold's henchman is crawling on the girder, sneaking up on Anon.

I think we should have Leopold introduce us as a rival fellow sportsmen and his ex. That way he sets us up as Konoko's rival in boths sports and love,

"...I'm sorry, I'm really thankful about the offer, but-"
"You don't want to talk about that soccer game?" Leopold sounds rather peeved at that. In and out of character.
"I..." From behind, you see Konoko's shoulders slump, "I just would like an ordinary soccer career, you know? I mean- that is to say..." Ellipses. Too many ellipses. She sure could be cool and collected while backstabbing, but just talking about a freaking soccer game is a challenge? "...I lost. I lost some very important friends that day. And, something else very dear to me."

"Dear to you?" Leopold's flat here. Not moved by Konoko's wavering voice.

Konoko stands up from the table, "I'm very sorry, mister scout. I think the food is disagreeing with me."
"Wait, hang on," Leopold stands. You hear soft chimes above, and you glance back to the chandelier and girders.

Hoo boy. Anon spotted the dude. He's tensed up, standing on the chandelier, waving at Leopold's flunky in a full on 'come at me bro' pose. He can't even anonymously lurk without begging for attention! The two rapidly start struggling in the chandelier.

"You said you weren't interested in me!" Konoko doesn't shout it, but she says it low, and hurt, as she starts to turn away- about to see you. Leopold sees the same, and snatches her wrist.

And Konoko gasps and tenses- she doesn't see you, but she's looking away from Leopold, tensed up, and blushing.

Christ, Leo, that sucked- but here goes. Here we freaking go- Konoko starts as Leopold takes a pistol out of his coat- a black and nasty thing. The blue haired girl from behind darts forward, going to protect Konoko- but-

Crucifix, us being in the lab, why Leo killed her, and the source of Anon's dark powers (long line of evil sorcerors, Deadoko was chosen over Anon because he didn't kick enough puppies)

You blink at her.

"Konoko? I want everyone to be safe. Are you alright?"
"That-"
"Ahhh, I forgot about myself," You look at your arm. Blood's running from it. You spare a glance at Anon, and see that he's looking over at you too. Clearly worried. You look over at Konoko. She's not worried. You figure that she has no reason to be. You take off your hat, hold up Cringer. He mews plaintively. At this, Konoko looks stricken.
"And poor Cringer. I forgot about him too," You look at his foot. All twisted weird. God damn bitch. Well, you managed a shield-

You lean in, let your lips brush Cringer's paw. A glow suffuses the both of you, and you hear Cringer squeak- and then start purring. As the shine fades, you see he's happy and whole, rubbing his face up against you, all three eyes closed in delight.

"Hah, what a relief-" You glance over at your arm. Your arm has sealed to, "And I'm better too!"
"Miko..."
"That's how it works for me, you know? I can't kiss myself to make it better. I can only get better when I help other people," The kitten playfully bats at your nose, and you allow yourself a giggle, "Or cute kittens. Hey, hey, Konoko-chan?" You hold Cringer up, facing her, "Don't you think he's cute, huh? Like this? All better?" Cringer fluffs up, as soon as he's facing Konoko.

Konoko's eyes start to crumple. She's trying to keep as still as possible, as she nods.

"Yeah, I thought so too. We have to save the world, Konoko, you know that? No matter who we are, what we said, or what we did," At this, you glance at Anon. Riritu somehow managed to get him in a headlock. His cheek pressed firmly in to her mammaries, he seems quite content with the situation, "Bad things might happen. And that's bad," You look back to Konoko. She's tensed up, looking out the window, "But the worst thing is when people stop trying to do good."

"Okay, Konoko?" You do the dippy closed eye smile.
"We'll all get our just desserts," She whispers. Your smile fades.

There seems to be a number of factions forming here on what we should proceed to do in the story. It's not even about what we should DO even, it's more about what kind of person we are. Some like the idea we are inherently a good person trying to bring about a good end, and some think we're a manipulator who wants to "survive at all costs". A personally vote for the former, because we obviously try to go the good route even when we had the chances not to, and I think manipulating is less a part of who we are, and more of a necessary evil.

"Hey, Konoko, that's not your line."
"I- Miko-chan, I'm sorry, but-" Being a protagonist just makes you a drama magnet, apparently. You're about to lecture her further, when suddenly there's a blue and brown blur that sweeps past you.

"Konoko-chan!" The blue haired girl crushes Konoko in her arms, "Konoko-chan, I was so worried about you!"
"Hey, hey, Shikibu-san," Konoko pats the crying girl on the back, "Don't worry so much."
"It's my fault! I, I thought that this would only be an athletic scouting...To think anyone would want to hurt my precious Konoko!"
"Hey, hey, calm down-" Konoko looks at you. You see a great deal of conflict in her eyes, then sighs, and says through gritted teeth, "Thankfully. My friends saved me. Anon, Riritu, and...Archimboldi-san," She looks pensive, eyes half lidded, "I really owe them a lot."

"You sure do, Konoko-chan!" Anon walks over, an inquiring look on his face, "Introduce me to your friend? Shikibu-chan, was it?"
"Don't be so forward," Konoko says stepping between the two, a look of anger over Shikibu's face, "And you-" She frowns, "Why do you-"
"I am a viking!" Anon says, fists on his hips, looking off to the side like superman, "A viking batman!"

"...Right. Well," Konoko glances at you again, for some reason, "So, how did you hear about this? I thought I'd kept it pretty secret!"
"Oh, Knight Exodium said that you would be ambushed here, and we were so worried~ Is Konoko-chan alright?" Riritu is now joining the orbit. All attention on Konoko again.

Weird she isn't happy about it. Actually, no it isn't. Anon's there. That probably would ruin anybody's mood.

You stand stroking Cringer. He's up and ready now, crawling all over you. You have a role now. You'll fulfill it.

The scene's fading now. Anything you want to do before Konoko retires the group to the house? You might be able to visit Deadoko, for instance.

Yeah, we need to see if we can rope Deadoko into her new role. Quickly, though, since we have to keep up our momentum. If it can't be done quickly, we'll just hang the role on her and run. Deadoko will just have to decide whether she wants it or not on her own.

If she's really set on being this stupid, we make it so she can't backstab us without narrative backlash, and then take her out when she does. Then we have a good cry over how we can't believe our best friend betrayed us, boo hoo, blah blah, etc.
