You think they must be - there are no other eyes on the creature’s body, and now that you look at them, the orbs look like enormous, compound insectile eyes.

You dive in, your short blade out, and jab at one of the tentacles. It twists easily out of the way, and wraps around your wrist, catching your arm and pulling hard. There's a burning feeling around your wrist and a pain in your shoulder like your arm's being torn apart.

Suddenly, the pain stops and the tentacle slumps and releases. Gloria's sword has darted across and sliced it off, freeing your hand and your weapon. You pull back and look for another eye to attack, but they've risen up out of your reach, and you see that they're all looking at Gloria. She had to turn away from the Corrupter to free you, and she's left herself open.

The massive head and its three wicked-looking hooked mouth-parts hammer down into Gloria's chest. They seize her around the waist and lift her up into the air, and with a shuddering twist of its body the Corrupter throws Gloria across the room. She slams into a brick wall, and slumps to the ground. A trio of deep gouges, each ringed with black slime, have been carved into her torso.

Gloria doesn't seem to be getting up. What's your next move?

Your legs stiffen a little. Your body takes a step forward, and you hear the bricks of the floor crack under the impact of your foot.

The only response from your mouth is a short burst of harsh, mocking laughter as your legs walk to the edge of the pool, and you feel your hand sheathing your dagger again.

“You think you’re a threat to me, you stupid little worm? You haven’t the slightest understanding of who you’re really dealing with. ‘Corrupter’. You make me laugh. I’ve seen true corruption and you can’t even hold a candle to it. Your poisons can’t touch me, your slime can’t pollute me, you have no way at all to corrupt or harm what I am. I am so because I command myself to be so, and you cannot even comprehend of a power that could match those commands. I have crushed in my hand the lies of the soldiers of the falling stars; I have spoken to a place that was not, and commanded it ‘Be’, and once more it was. I am a force beyond your imagining, vermin. I am power, I am control, I am domination. When I stand, you kneel. When I speak, you listen. When I say ‘Live’, you live. And when I say ‘Die’, you DIE.”

There is a horrible, terrible resonance. The final word of the Man’s speech echoes in a way that is not an echo. It fills the room with itself, until the air is heavy and dark with power and magic.

The Corrupter seems to rise jerkily for a second, all its limbs and tentacles lifting up before it as if to shield its body from the terrible power of that word, and then it crumples up on itself. There is a soft splash as its enormous body drops back into the pool, a noise that seems almost insignificant next to the fading echoes of the word of command.

Your lips curl into an expression that is almost, but not completely, unlike anything that could be called a human smile. Your body strides forward once more, stepping into the thick sludge and pushing through it with no more resistance than pure water. There’s a sizzling sound, but your body keeps walking.

You see your right hand raise the thick glass jar you had prepared to hold the demon’s heart; your other hand simply plunges straight into the creature’s body, its soft body parting like cloth as your hand seizes something solid and meaty and rips it out. Black fluid drips over your hand and onto the cuff of your shirt, leaving red lines on your skin and rapidly-growing holes in your shirt.

The lumpy, misshapen organ drops into the glass jar, and your eyes refocus to stare at the remaining black fluid staining your hand and wrist.

“Cease,” your voice says, and your hand and wrist are bare and clean.

“Cleanse,” it says, and the pool is suddenly flowing with clear, sparkling water. You can see your trainers and trouser legs are torn and damaged.

There is now a fierce red stain across the back of your hand and large holes in your cuff; your eyes stare at them for a moment, and you hear yourself say “That’s nothing. Acceptable collateral damage, as they say.” With another quick movement, one of the bottles of holy water is emptied into the jar, producing a hissing cloud of steam as it washes over the corrupted heart, and the jar lid is sealed. “That’ll do, kid. That’ll do.”

You put the thick glass jar carefully into your backpack, and go to check on Gloria. She's covered in way too much blood, and she has a worrying number of holes in her. Her head hit the brick wall hard enough to crack the brick. She's still breathing, though, and she's got a strong pulse. You gingerly take her sword by the pommel and slip it into your belt, then lift Gloria up and sling her across your shoulders.

Your battered legs are aching steadily by the time you look to the end of the tunnel and see the ladder you originally came down. Your arms aren't doing much better, and you occasionally have to stop and spit small amounts of blood out of your mouth. You're still standing, though. You haven't had any enormous holes ripped into you like Gloria has, you've got the heart, and with a bit of time to rest and recover you'll probably be fine. Assuming you actually get any time to rest, of course.

When you reach the ladder, you face the problem of how to haul the unconscious Gloria up a vertical ladder. Fortunately, when you tap on the ladder a few times, there's an answering cry from above. With Esther supporting Gloria's body and you lifting her legs, the two of you are able to slowly haul hr up to the surface and lay her down on the tarmac.

Esther bustles over Gloria, inspecting her injuries and making disgruntled noises, then finally turns to you. "What happened down there? Do you have the heart? What is the next step of your plan?"

We need to come up with an excuse to Gloria. She knows that alone, Chris would never be able to win.

Maybe we should throw away/break all the holy water vials and fake it.

He doesn't need much medical care once his arm's patched up, just someone to bring him water and mop his brow, right?"

Esther sighs and shakes her head. "Outpatient care involves substantially more than mopping brows, James. You read entirely too many of the wrong sorts of books. Still, I suppose I cannot in good faith stop you from staying by his bedside, so long as you obey the orders of the nurses."

James' face lights up, and he moves off, kneeling down to check on Gloria. "Hey, Chris, what happened to her sword?", he calls out.

"I've got that too, needed an easy way to carry it," you reply, grasping the sword fully by its hilt and pulling it from your belt. Ow. Okay, that definitely hurts. You toss the sword over to James, who manages to catch it awkwardly but without cutting himself, and shake your hand. Small wisps of smoke drift away and dissipate. You don't think anyone else saw them. Esther and James are both checking on Gloria now, and Louie is sitting down and catching his breath.

Esther does, indeed, make a very brief phone call - she dials a number, speaks a couple of words in a language you don't recognise, and hangs up. Drawing her long, cylindrical whip from her belt, she heads down into the sewers and the two of you begin to scour the tunnels for signs of life.

After about half an hour, you finally find something - a guy in his mid-20s sitting in the middle of one of the tunnels, looking very confused. He seems to be in a daze - he's not alarmed by the fact that he's suddenly found himself in a sewer tunnel, or the fact that, when you question him, he doesn't recall how he got there or what he's been doing for the past few days. A driver's license in his wallet identifies him as Quinn Williamson, one of the two missing men. Esther questions him carefully, but he doesn't seem to remember anything since he went to bed on Saturday night, nearly a full day before he went missing.

Somewhat exasperated, Esther leads him back to the entrance you used before, instructs him to stay there, and carries on combing the sewers for almost an hour. Apart from the bodies of the Corrupter and its minions, however, there's little else to find, and none of the thugs have any ID or personal effects on them. (Esther does, however, stop to strip all the magazines from their weapons and slip them into her pockets. Bullets, she explains, are sometimes a lot harder to get hold of than guns.)

Esther presses a button on her smartphone and walks to the kerb. Within a minute, a sleek black car has pulled up. She gives you a brief wave, then disappears inside and is driven away.

You have the heart. However, it's now very dark and very late. That second search of the sewers took a long time, and you didn't start until 9pm. It's now coming up on midnight.

You've still got a fair way to walk before reaching the eastern edge of town, so you're not waiting too long for Jill. She stares a little when she sees your battered and part-dissolved jeans, but doesn't comment as you hand her the heavy glass jar with the demonic heart suspended inside it. The holy water you poured into the jar seems to already be going slightly cloudy.

The two of you walk slowly and carefully into the forest, using your phones to light the way so that you don't trip over any roots or walk into any low-hanging branches. Smashing the glass jar here would probably have bad results.

As you get deeper into the forest you start to notice lights up ahead, shifting through the trees. When you get a bit closer, you can see a small glowing light bobbing up and down in midair without any obvious supports or source.

Jill peers at it. "Is this a real live will-o-the-wisp? Wow. It's so pretty."

The light - the wisp? - bobs up and down in what you presume is some sort of gesture of thanks.

"Can you lead us to Princess Avril, little wisp?", Jill asks, and the light doss the same bobbing motion. It darts away, then hovers about 30 paces away, waiting for you all to follow.

Point one, our dominance over Avril never lapse. Only our will to exploit it did and only to the extent that using it might further damage her and her usefulness to us. We still tie her up during fun times, we just haven't had too much time for fun in the last three or for days.

Point 2, I mostly agree we need to develop our own powers excepting situations in which by ourself we are screwed. That said, Dresden is a horrible model for our growth since we aren't a wizard and don't have wizardy powers.

Simple example, having kids is pretty evolutionarily necessary, and a tribe who didn't do that would die out in a generation. But that doesn't mean it's hard-wired: evolution acts on culture as well as genes, so just as animals without instinct to breed would be selected against evolutionarily, so would people without a culture of having kids be selected against.

Genes don't control what we think, but evolution does apply to the thousands of years of culture humans today have.

Guys, I just thought of another wrinkle with regard to Jill's mom. Avril, by virtue of being ours, is essentially our proxy in spring court matters. Sinse she obviously didn't step in and defend Jill's mom during the trial, she basically signaled our ascent to the proceedings. Us immediately demanding a retrial or reduction of Mrs. White's sentence will make us look weak since we can't control our proxy. The fae do not tolerate weakness, they exploit it.

We have to tread very carefully and make sure Avril explains all the dangers involved in whatever course of action we end up choosing.

Guys, I've been thinking, and maybe we're going about this Mrs. White thing all wrong.
Let's put it into perspective: if Mrs. White had gone crazy-stupid (as she did here) and crashed onto the Buckingham Palace grounds and attacked the Queen with a knife, wouldn't we feel that the security was doing their job to shoot her dead? Wouldn't we feel that 'it was too bad, but she had it coming' if that happened?
Maybe we need to properly contextualize things for Jill, so that she understands that, all things considered, this is just an unfortunate (and crazy) course of action that her mother took, and was really nothing more than suicide by Fae.

Of course, we do need to tighten our hold on Avril and get her more human empathy; I'm not disputing that.
I just don't think that we should spend so much effort or resources on saving Mrs. White.

Of course the Spring King had this eventuality planned for; after all, he created Miranda and probably ensured that Jill was born so that he could have a powerful telekinetic as his daughter's bodyguard. Everything involving the White family is probably already accounted for by the King. Margaret fulfilled her usefulness, and became a liability, so he acted to make sure that she is disposed of.

Oddly enough, the Chosen isn't actually that great at combat beyond the "spend 4 strings to have a final showdown with an NPC" move. What you really want are moves that add extra harm, like the Angel's one, or moves that give you lots of Strings on people (that you can then spend to deal extra harm).
