Star Krakens 4: The Krakening

Link to the 1d4chan - http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Star_Krakens

"So far a fairly decent /tg/ custom Chapter, the Star Krakens are a Raven Guard successor chapter with a heavy emphasis on deep sea mythology, viking influence (but not THAT Viking influence) and ship-to-ship combat. They inhabit a region of space featuring the Deep, a dark nebula which obfuscates almost all attempts at scanning it."

Go.

Varangian Armour?
Honestly I've been looking at the screen for so long I can't even tell if these armour designs are good or bad anymore.

I think it's one of those: "You'd have to see it in person" deals.

Ooh, nice! Varangians with gold Kraken helms is nice.

I'm gonna go ahead and post my write-faggotry from last thread over here for visibilitys sake.

-------------------

Craglish startled awake. The ship creaked once more, and then fell silent. Assured that he wasn't in for imminent death, he staggered from the squalid bunk in his quarters and threw on his ramshackle mixture of armour and what passed as a uniform on board his bucket of bolts, the Spearhead. As he made his way to the front deck Craglish mused on how effective their most recent slew of raid had been. The Imperial navy ships should have known better than to travel with only light escorts this close to the Halo Stars. They had made fine pickings for his crew, and they would feast for months with the agricultural supplies they had acquired, leaving alone the massive quantity of armaments destined for the Imperial Guard outpost on Jaraxis Prime. Smirking to himself as he patted the artificier sword he'd relinquished the second ship's captain of, Craglish made his way through the inch thick blast doors that guarded pilots nest at the heart of the ship.
>>
>>27845025

There was a feeling of unease among the crew as the captain finally rejoined them in the bridge. Despite the cocky confidence that Craglish had been displaying since the most recent raid, First Officer Danik was worried. It was one thing to raid an agricultural ship here, a transport ship there, and take from them their excess before scuttling the ship but Craglish had taken a shining to a kind of violence some of the crew were uneasy about. Had there really been a need to flay the astropath aboard the last ship, they could have at least disconnected him from the apparatus first. That was to say nothing of jettisoning the captain and his family to the void strapped with melta charges. Word in the system was that the ship had been flocked by Imperial Navy destroyers shortly after the Spearhead had departed and that there was a mounting call among the officers of the region to hunt down and make an example of Craglish and his crew.

Now of course, few enough of them would be inclined to leave the ship, Danik thought. The takings were excellent, the fights were easy. What wasn't there to love? Sure enough Craglish's most recent spate of violence was something that one could worry about, but perhaps he had his reasons, and who was a first mate to question his captain in front of the crew?

“A pirate's life for me” he murmured to himself as the captain began his routine.
>>
>>27845039

Warning sensors blared into life aboard the bridge of the Spearhead.

Green lights. Which could only mean one thing: Prey.

Craglish bolted upright in his chair and began roaring commands to the different officers, while firing up the holographic scanner to get a better look at the solitary ship. “A solitary cargo ship! Ha! Did they not hear about us or something?” roared Craglish, arms raised in merriment to the laughter of the boarding commanders “Get the men ready Reglan, we've got another fish to gut”.

Among the excitement of the captain's infectious enthusiasm, only Danik noticed the other reading on the scanner. Or rather, the lack of one.

One specific spot, off the starboard side of the ship, where no readings were coming from at all. Not as if there was nothing there; a void, an absence.

Danik felt unease creep over him, but kept silent and silently prepared his pistol.

VOID KRAKEN
>>
>>27845051

Reglan escorted the men to the belly of the ship, where the boarding craft waited. Practically skipping with excitement. The killing was his favourite part, and ever since the captain had taken to it as well, it seemed that bit more satisfying.

There was a dull crump in the distance, followed by a shaking of the hull. Reglan stopped in his tracks, wondering why they would launch the boarding craft without him. Furious he roared “Double time you sons of whores!” as he began sprinting for the nearest hangar, oblivious to the flashing red alarm signals starting in the hallways.

Reglan burst through the huge blast doors, sweat pouring from him as he roared at the nearest pilot to ready the ship for him. The pilot stood there shuddering, desperately trying to direct officer's attention to the massive warning signals as the boarding sirens began. Pushed past his tolerance, Reglan lifted the pilot and threw him over his shoulder.
>>
>>27845086

“You'll fly this ship, or you'll be the first blood on my axe today worm!”. “Sir!” the pilot desperately blurted out “those aren't the launch signals for the boarders. WE are being boarded!”. As the look of realisation dawned upon Reglan's face, there was an enormous clunk at the hull just outside. Enormous hooks penetrated the adamantium walls of the ship, and canisters were flung from the across the hangar. Reacting faster than his comrades, Reglan dove behind the nearest craft and turned away from the canisters before they shattered open with a blinding light, incapacitating the boarding parties in their places.

The boarding parties were stunned as the hull of ths ship tore open and was flung inwards with explosive impact. Seconds after the explosion killed half the pirates a roar filled the hangar. “IN DARKNESS DWELLS, DROWN THEM ALL BROTHERS!” before the blasts of shotgun and boltgun fire ripped forth from the breach, tearing the crew down in seconds. Reglan grabbed his chain-axe and jumped up to join the few survivors of the initial salvo. Shouldering their shotguns, he signalled that he would lead the way and charged around the corner of the ship.

He was greeted by a figure straight from the stuff of his nightmares. The giant in his luminescent armour turned on Reglan, crushing his chest cavity with one might blow of his hammer. As he lay on the deck choking on his own crushed innards, his last thoughts were of the Marine's solitary eye, blacker than the void itself.

Hope someone enjoys it, c&c welcome.

would it not be cooler if their helm lenses would all be a eerie green instead of red?

Red lenses on green works, but if you make it a very light green (misty spooky green), I think it would work quite well.

>Repostan my writefagging

Commodore Achab stood on the scorched battlefield, steam rising off his bulk and lingering for a few moments in the pallid air. Pulling his chainsword out of the carcass in front of him he turned to his fellow Marines. The remains of several suits of power armour lay about the floor in miserable little heaps, several Marines were limping or being carried by their Brothers.

"Administer the rites to the dead." Achab growled quietly, his deep voice echoing across the now silent plains.

Whilst a number of the Marines started to gather up their falled brethren, one staggered towards the Commodore. His dark green armour now plastered with blood and gore from the recent skirmish, the Marine limped over to Achab. "Brother Tostvig, you will have to visit the Apothecary and get that looked at" Achab rumbled towards the Marine.

Brother Tostvig looked down and saw a gigantic claw attached firmly into his thigh, the intensely sharp claws had cut straight through the armour into the Marines skin. "I could not go to them knowing my fellow Brothers were in need of more urgent care, Commodore" Tostvig answered in an equally deep rumble.

>>
>>27845139
"I do not give advice, Brother Tostvig, I give orders!" Achab bellowed to the Marine, his gaze was that of carved oak, solid and unyielding.

Brother Tostvig nodded and limped off to join the rest of his Brothers, Achab, surveying the landscape, overhead a quiet wheezing noise from a few metres away. He looked over and saw a green, scaly chest rising up and down, albeit very slowly. Achab's vision immediately narrowed, his blood boiled and his veins pulsed with anger.

Running over to the dying Xeno, he pulled out his combat knife and plunged it into the Grendel's chest. Achab gritted his teeth and hissed at the disgusting creature "From hell's heart I stab at thee." The Commodore pulled the knife and stabbed again. The Grendel's eyes rolled into the back of it's head as it took it's last breath, under the overbearing awe of the Star Krakens Chapter Master. "For hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee." Achab continued to stab and curse the Grendel until it was nothing more than a pile of wet bone and scales.

"Damned Xeno."

>>

It was briefly debated in the second thread, campyness winning out over coolness. Star Kraken's is so... 2nd Edition 40k, Void Kraken's is very 6th.

>tips fedora
>>
>>27845303
Ah, well.
>>
>>27845289
We also pointed out that the Void Krakens are a species, so it seems a bit weird naming a Chapter directly after them. And we didn't want to go full WOLF WOLF WOLF like the Space Yiffs.

I think I'll writefag some more about Achab tomorow. Do we have him encounter the Grendel on then world Unferth, and have his Company slaughtered in a particularly nasty fashion?
>>
>>27845307
Also, Void Krakens are a Xenos race in 40k. It seems weird that they'd name themselves directly after it. It'd be like a chapter calling themselves "Hormogaunts"
>>
>>27845243

meant it differently sorry.

The veterans have green lenses, but I meant all of the Krakens have green lenses. Lighter green lenses.
>>
Thanks to whomever is editing my stories for readability. I appreciate the effort, I'd do it myself if I could read Wikinese.
>>
>>27845349
A little too on the nose, if you ask me. And the name of the hall in Beowulf was Heorot.
>>
>>27845417
Well there was a character in it called Unferth, so I thought it was just a reference that could go un-noticed.
>>
>>27845587
If you want an oblique Beowulf reference call the planet Salur, salur being the Icelanding name for a hall. If you want an oblique Moby-Dick reference, go with the company being slaughtered in naval boarding actions over the planet Cipan, as in the novel Ahab lost his leg off the coast of Japan and Cipan is the Chinese name for Japan.
>>
I know last thread (or it might have been two threads ago) that someone suggested a Jack Sparrow knock-off ork as an enemy of the chapter. Instead of that, how about Kaptin Blackteef? Wears a huge black gob and often fights the Krakens over salvageable spacecraft in the Deep.

His home base probably wouldn't be too far into the Deep, but on the outer edges, and he's possibly clever enough to disguise his own ships like those of the Krakens to create some misplaced ill-will between the Imperial worlds of the area and the chapter.

And is it bad I want to be in a Deathwatch group using a bunch of /tg/'s chapters (like the Krakens, the Blood Jaguars, etc.) that's essentially WH40K: Bad Company?

Back for part 2 due to popular demand

>>27845101

Mokoyll stepped over the corpse of what seemed to have been the leader of the pirates present in the hangar. Examining his immediate surroundings, he barked out a series of commands to the marines of his strike party.

"Brother Theodorus, place the charges. Brother Snaaijer, prepare this area for extraction. Squad Otten, breach and clear the starboard corridors. I am with you brothers"

"They will drown, we will rise" chanted Mokoyll's brother Krakens in Unison as they set about their assigned tasks with mechanical precision.

-------

"WHAT. IS. HAPPENING?" bellowed Craglish addressing both his remaining officers in the bridge, as well as the vox system. "I-It appears we've b-been boarded Sir!" piped up one of the petty officers. Craglish roared incoherently, as he tried to gain some sense of what was happening aboard his ship. All of the sensors had been focused on the merchant vessel, and in his blind greed he had been baited in closer to the ship as the jaws of the trap had closed around him.

"Yes, I can see that Samuel, but by WHOM. Why has noone responded to the voxx calls? Where are the boarding parties?". "From preliminary internal scans, it appears to be a force of Adeptus Astartes sir. Unknown numbers and chapter, but they have breached the ship here, here and here" gestured Pollinus, the ships tech-expert.

Examining the blueprints, Craglish could make nothing of the entry points of the astartes. "Why would they enter the ship there..." he raged as he considered the scanner.

"Scans indicate a splinter force moving this direction sir" droned Pollinus through his mechanical jaw.

"Well, we'd best welcome them as we know best gentlemen! Prepare your arms!". Whipping his saber from it's sheath, he charged out of the room followed by his bodyguards and remaining officers.

...with the exception of Danik, who snuck off in the opposite direction,

>>27846459
Well, that and I think only the Emperor's Nightmares are truly statted for use in Deathwatch.
>>

Mokoyll led the assault party through the broad hallways of the ship, breaching shield held before him. The Techmarine among the boarding party had disabled the lights in this section of the ship, and the shimmering light of the luminescent runes inscribed on Mokoyll's armour lit the way for his unit. To his men, a beacon in the dark akin to Huginn, guiding the Marines in their righteous duty. To the pirates aboard the ship he stalked the corridors, a figure of terror in the dark.

--------------

Craglish had affixed his raiding visor after leaving the confines of the bridge, and found himself glad of the fact now that the light had been extinguished in the ship. The darkness only seemed to accentuate the dull thumping of footsteps that echoed throughout the ship. He couldn't honestly tell where the footsteps were coming from, or who they belonged to, and that thought terrified him.

The scanners suggested that the Marines were moving towards the central control deck, from which the basic running of the ship was done. Though this struck Craglish as somewhat odd, he knew the Astartes would not be targeting that part of the ship on a whim. There must be some reason he mused, before his thoughts were interrupted by the beeping of his scanner. They were close. Very close.

The Marines were less than 200 meters away from his current position. He signaled to his men to prepare their weapons, as he loaded his own shotgun.
>>
>>27847102

"Brother Commander" whispered Sergeant Otten "scanner's indicate a substantial group of the pirates in the next room. Shall we engage, or send brother Lojituv to the command center alone to continue as planned?".

"That seems wisest brother" agreed Mokoyll, affixing his helmet as the rest of the squad did the same. "Give Lojituv three minutes, and we shall send these renegades to the deep for their penance." Hefting his great hammer in one hand, and the breaching shield in the other, he formed a wall of adamantium with the other Krakens in front of the blast door, and they waited as Lojituv's footsteps echoed into silence.

-------

"What are they waiting for!" Craglish exclaimed, exasperated by the marine's apparent inactivity. "Perhaps they are awaiting backup sir? Maybe we should strike while they are undermanned." suggested Paulson, the heavy-weapons specialist of the Spearhead. Shifting his weight from one foot to the other, and looking around his men in the dark, Craglish considered his options. Either take the fight to the marines on his own terms, denying them whatever it was they were waiting for, or allow them to walk into an ambush that they were almost certain to be aware of. "You're right for once Paulson. Prepare the melta bombs, we'll catch the drop on them." Paulson grinned and quickly began affixing the demolition charges to the bulkhead of the blast door.

"I'll put one minute on the timer sir" whispered Paulson into his vox system as he affixed the final charge. "We should have no problems wi-" he was cut short as the blast door, as well as every other nearby door simultaneously slid open. "OPEN FIRE!" roared Craglish as the ominous glowing figures of the Astartes moved in unison through the blast doors. The massed fire of his men dropped the marine to his left, and seemed to stop them momentarily, before the juggernaught leader crushed Paulson beneath his shield. Their advance began in earnest again.
>>
>>27847499

There was a sudden an unexpected popping noise, followed by a rush of air in every direction at once. "DROWN IN THE VOID, TRAITORS. RECEIVE THE EMPERORS JUDGEMENT!" cried out the leader of the marines. Craglish dropped his weapons as he fumbled for his helmet, wide-eyed realization apparent on his face.

"THEY'RE VENTING THE AIR INTO SPACE. REBREATHERS. NOW!" he screamed over the intense noise as he struggled with his own mask. He suddenly understood the trap, and for the second time in one afternoon he knew his foolish lack of foresight had cost him dearly. Craglish's pirates were caught struggling to survive the sudden lack of air by placing their rebreathers on, which left them unable to defend themselves from the onslaught of the astartes.

The combat was over momentarily, with the marines left standing amongst the wreckage of the pirate crew, aboard the nearly fully intact ship.

"Brother Commander Mokoyll" rasped Lojituv through the vox channels "the ship has been evacuated of necessary gases to support the continuation of resistance. Only the cargo hold has retained it's atmosphere, as per your earlier orders".

Mokoyll nodded in approval to noone in particular. "Very good brother. You do the Chapter proud. Rejoin us, as we cleanse the remainder of the ship before requisitioning the pirate's supplies for the chapter's use."

"We are like the Kraken. Immense in size. Girded in armor of earth and metal. Gifted with strength beyond mortal comprehesion. And we strike without warning. But do not mistake this for worship, or idolatry. It is a descriptive name, as it is for all good chapters. Are the Raven Guard truly bird men? Do they send forth great hawks to fight their foes? They do not have such things, but they are 'like' the raven, for they are swift, cunning, and silent. So are we like the Kraken that prowls the Deep. Though perhaps "Brothers of the Fool" might be a more accurate name, given how we arrived here"

>Relations
>Each Other
>Although there is no recorded instance of two Kraken vessels ever coming to blows, many Brother-Captain's have long, tumultuous relationships with one another. Rivalries between certain ships, their crews and marine complements, are sometimes perceived as healthy, with each attempting to 'one-up' the other in their attempts to bring glory to both the Imperium of Man and the Star Kraken in particular. Every Strike Cruiser maintains a rich verbal history of its deeds, and in many cases the Captain has his acolytes carve murals of notable events onto the inner walls of the vessels meeting places, known as Great Halls, as well as making trophies of vanquished foes hull. These serve not just as morale boosters to the marines aboard, but also establish certain bragging rights amongst visiting Captain's - it's almost assured that one Captain, jealous of the chitinous plating of a fallen Tyranid vessel holding the place of honour in his rival's hall, will throw himself into the next battle with fervor so that he, too, might hold such a trophy.

>The Star Kraken are organised into a non-standard arrangement: Every company has a single scout squadron, five tactical units, two assault units, one devastator unit and a unit of veterans whom accompany the Brother-Captain. This configuration best suits the nature of the Deep, where the Strike Cruisers of the Kraken are often separated by weeks of travel time, yet still expected to operate despite such isolation from one another. Likewise these units may be of differing strength or size dependent on the vessel they serve aboard, as individual Captain's may scale their forces based on experience, and any number of the companies veterans may be serving aboard the Holdfast at any given time. The exception to this rough rule is the First Company, who replace their scout unit with the Chapter's only unit of Terminators - Mokoyll, first company commander, believes there is no situation that can be solved via scouting, that can't be more effectively solved with a full terminator assault.

Haha thanks. I know we made a definite line from Bioshock big daddy, but I remember people from the last threads mentioning the flavor of diving suits, vikings, and a squid motif (but not like you know all squids).
I also remember mecha-tentacles for priests? I'm still catching up with all the awesome writefaggotry and 1d4chan stuff.
>>
>>27854764
Yes the consensus seemed to move away from overt references pretty quickly, although personally I'm still going to equip some my Kraken with diving helmets from Maxmini.
>>
>>27854764
>>27854819
If we keep the references to a minimum, I think we can explain the helmets as chapter specific modifications. Basically, enhanced auspexes strapped to the front of mostly regular helmets. Let them all have advanced sensors, at the cost of armor power, battery life, and perhaps vulnerability to EMP and blinding/flashbang effects, because it's more meant for dark void of space stuff than everyday planetary activity.
>>
>>27854764

Did we forget about Centurions? The big, bulky aesthetic of old diving gear seems perfect for them, not to mention it comes with some special sensor systems built-in.

>>27854873

I've been considering tabletop implications of this Chapter, should that discussion be saved for later? Perhaps a fleshed-out concept would be better to base custom rules on.

Mechadendrites. I'm not sure if Tech-Marines have those, they tend to have more robot claws. Here, have a picture of a Tech-Marine. Tech-Marines also tend to keep a red colorscheme on their main body, in reverence to the Omnissaiah, like how Librarians wear blue.

Do we have any fluff on Librarians, or do the Star Krakens not have many? Let's not get too crazy with them, though, Emperor's Nightmares have a handle on crazy Librarian shenanigans.
>>
>>27855290
The point is this. It doesn't matter if you're the best rules and fluff balancer in the history of mankind.

Just presuming to write rules will cause a shitstorm. Even Forgeworld stuff gets rage flowing. Homebrew stuff is guilty until proven innocent, and there is no such thing as innocence.

Don't overestimate /tg/. We've become pretty shit in the past several months. It's just my personal viewpoint/experience, but we've taken to tearing down virtually EVERYTHING, because evidently it's too hard to build, and too easy/satisfying to rip something down.
>>
>>27855366
There are Librarian's, they tattoo themselves, but otherwise are just regular Librarian's. Also when their ship in the Deep they assist in 'scanning' the nebula for enemies, because regular sensors don't work well unless the Lighthouse is focused on that particular spot. This has earned them the nickname "Deep Watchers" but it is by no means an official title.
>>
Updated the wiki again. Tech Priest forgive me, but I've reorganised the Writefaggotry section (and added two stories from Thread 3) into sections. I feel like we're going to get a LOT of Writefagging for these guys, and that section might be easier to navigate in this state rather than as one block of text.

>>27855410
>>27855366
And we need more fluff on these guys, too!
>>
>>27855290
>>27855251
>>27855232

I tend to make pretty balanced rules, I'll come up with a few, vet them extensively, and return at a later thread. I'll mostly mess with Chapter Tactics: let's not rewrite the goddamn Codex.

Raven Guard Chapter Tactics seem pretty fitting, and those'll probably be used more often. Still, it doesn't hurt to have an alternative profile if someone allows homebrewed rules. If not, we can simply discard the homebrewed rules in favor of Raven Guard CT.
>>
>>27855544
I wholeheartedly support your endeavour. However for the sake of the thread can you mediafire and link the rules you create as opposed to posting them wholesale? I feel it might create a stir with some of the other Krakens if the thread becomes rules discussion.
>>
>>27855585

Will do. This will at least keep lazy people off our case.

>>27855536

Tech-Marines would play an important role in a Fleet-Based Chapter. Like the Quarians of Mass Effect or Mars pre-Great Crusade, someone who can keep the machines running in the cold and empty void is someone you really want around. They'd be in charge of the Chapter's Lighthouses, unless they are more of a psychic device, in which case that role would fall to the Librarians. Tech-Marines would also craft, prototype, and maintain custom modifications to the Chapter's armor and weapons, like their swanky diving helmets and various auspex arrays. I'd also imagine the auspex would be pretty important for a Chapter that operates in the dark.
>>
>>27855730
Does the fleet have a greater-than-average density of Tech-marines? I would think so. Seeing as we have fluff that the Deep drives higher-order Magos insane over time due to the electronic dampening which Marines and those priests 'less plugged in' seem immune to. Plus all the ship stuff. I imagine your average Kraken has more knowledge on the operation of his armour/bolter/vessel than any other marine in a regular chapter.
>>
>>27855890
>than any other marine in a regular chapter
Statements like that are never good. I propose this instead-
>than the vast majority of regular chapter marines
>>
>>27855890

Perhaps. Other fleet-based chapters don't, though. Of course, many fleet-based chapters were driven from their homeworlds (Mantis Warriors, Lamenters, Blood Ravens) or function as a fleet simply because they like the mobility (Black Templars, Carcharadons).

So what would be the reason why they are more machine-savvy than other chapters that take to the void? Though I do agree that regular marines would have a little more knowledge on machines. Silence is the worst thing to hear on a space ship, as it means something isn't doing what it's supposed to. The people closest to the problem need to learn the basics of maintaining the ship's healthy hum.

Maybe the fleet is built of older or retrofitted vessels, and need more maintenance? Maybe they incur more damage in the Deep for some reason, the dark space obscuring micro asteroids and other such space detritus?
>>
>>27856038
Let's just say that Krakens in general have a better "gut" feeling when it comes to ship maintenance, they don't know how to fix it but they are not completely clueless.
>>
>>27856038
>>27855934
>>27856219

How about this:

They have the baseline amount of Tech-Marines, who tend to look after the bigger equipment like "lighthouses", while the baseline marines include ship-maintenance to their routine schedule, even if it's just polishing the brass on the hand-rails.

Master of the Forge would probably look after Huginn. Conversely, the Chief Librarian would probably look after Muninn. This gives both the Psykana and Mechanicus branches of the Chapter important roles. Hm... I kind of like that: the various roles like that of a ship, with standard crew members doing a little of everything.
>>
>>27856427
Sounds good to me +1 bump
>>
>>27844934

>>
>>27855214

Veteran colours?

So what is the veteran colour scheme? this or the Varangian one?
>>
>>27854764
In the original thread we had mechadendrites as such, scouts had none, upon becoming a full marine they are granted two mechadendrites tipped with tools for breaching bulkheads, doors, and whatnot, as they increase in rank they're given additional pairs tipped with weapons. Since we've fleshed them out more that would make them ridiculously overpowered, but I think the initial idea of breaching tools on mechadendrites can be salvaged.
>>
>>27855890
Actually, I think it's one pre ship, but the individual marines are quite good at repairing their own shit.
>>
Have we got anything about the Chapter Master being called Commodore on there?
>>
>>27860394

I think there is a coucil that rules the Krakens, where they, by vote, choose a chapter master if they have a major undertaking involving multiple companies.

Seeing rivalry between companies and all, I think that they then would elect one leader, one that everyone's agreed on is the most fit to lead them.

Anyway, do we have any special wargear? I couldn't see any in the thread or on 1d4chan. I could whip up some sketches real fast, although you'll have to wait for proper scans until tonight or tomorrow. I'm better with guns and weapons and gear than dynamic poses and stuff.

I imagine Varangian are different from standard veterans, as Varangian are active members of the Strike Cruiser Holdfast and the 'eleventh' company, but in actuality are still Veterans from other chapters who will one day return to those chapters.

As such Veterans have one colour scheme, and Varangian's just wear a bronze helmet.

Okay, so I've got three things down.

First, the Breaching Shield. For ease of manufacturing and maintenance, the Star Krakens have chosen to use a laminated construction with thinner "planks" rather than the original massive slabs. The Deep Caul has tubes that connect to distribution units on the arms or chest of the marine carrying it, and the big cable pictured is the refilling cable. I also drew a Deep Caul grenade, as I'd imagine that'd be pretty useful. You activate it by bending the arms up and throwing it like a stick grenade. The Breacher Mechadendrite also has two melta-cutters on the side, and has been found to also be effective at tearing up enemy armour.

Not as good as I'd liked, especially not the mechadendrite, but I'm on a time limit, so I'll have to leave now. Have at ya.

3rd Company could be those who most frequently plunge the depths of the Deep. The long periods spent away from the rest of the chapter has given them an insular temperament and the frequent logic defying features of the nebula lead them to frequently claim that the chapter stands upon the precipice of destruction at the hands of some newly discovered aspect of the Deep.

These excessive mutations should be the exception to the rule:

The geneseed of the Star Krakens is considered pure with the exception of pitchblack eyes and an uncommon resistance to the void of deep space.

However, after several centuries of service, some unfortunate individuals show signs of slow, but excessive mutation beyond these boundaries:

Their eyes start to bulge, forming slit pupils akin to the squids and octopuses of ancient Terra and their jaws and nosebone fusing together to form a terrible beak. Over time, their bodies will start to calcify from head to sole, making them statues like corals.

These poor devils are called the "Void-Touched", and their fate is to be locked away from any Imperial knowledge as to preserve the chapter from a "thorough Inquisitorial purge".

Some captains are mercifully willing to deploy the Void-Touched, though, so they may die in service before they become living statues.

Putting Mechadendrites on everything doesn't sound too appealing to me, but breaching tools are certainly something we can include.

In Imperial Armor 8, Elysians have the option to buy a LasCutter. The same tool can be applied to the Krakens, or replaced with their own version, a Plasma Cutter. That, or they can just really love Melta Bombs.
>>
>>27862364

...I know it's a young chapter, but this really makes me think of a massive cargo ship filled with the chilling coral statues of old void-touched. Few know the true nature of the vessel, but rumors if it's true purpose circle among neophytes. In these rumors the daunting tomb vessel has garnered a foreboding name: The Locker.
>>
>>27862075

What about 10? Octopi have 8 arms, but a squid has 10, in which case it works with the standard setup. Could be that minimum squad size is 8, though that's not a direct, limiting rule, but more of a suggestion on how to play a fluffy army.

Then we definitely would have to call the commander of that ship "Davy Jones" ;D

However, I had first envisioned the Void-Touched that can't be deployed anymore to be linked into Munnin's archive while they still have the capacity to uphold cerebral activity, having all their memories and battlerecords copied into the vast hoard of knowledge, then their bodies are expelled into the Deep once their brains have completely calcified, as well.

As I'm writing this: Maybe their coral-chaulk is the source for the chapter's bioluminiscent runes and heraldry, in a metaphorical sense the Void-Touched are still watching over the still active battle-brothers as their completely calcified bodies are ground into a special kind of paint or ceramite that is added to the basic power armours.

This is actually a fantastic idea.

Being only capable to talk with their brainwaves, these calcified Dreadnoughts have to use the BLOOP-speak from thread #1 because they needed different means of communication, being only capable to express thought through their brainwaves that would be processed into non-linguistic audiosignals.

It is actually possible that almost all serving dreadnoughts eventually become calcified, as the shock of near-death triggers a malfunction in their ultra-fast regeneration, eventually turning the whole organism into a statue.

>>
>>27862907

The Void-Touched ought to be more of a very occasional mutation that so far has no cure, but at the same time can quite effectively be contained by regular examination by the Apothecary and cleansing rites.

Also the Black Dragons can turn their mutation into something useful - The Void-Touched become literally useless if not linked to the Munnin (and that use is quite limited) or strapped into a Dreadnought.
>>
>>27862891
Nah, Hamiltonius' eyes both exploded.
>>
>>27862938

That sounds better. Emperor's Nightmare have a corner on all of the "dying so hard and so tragically terrible fate" already. The calcification being a rare or uncommon mutation makes it more okay to me.

For extra grimdark, it could be related to their mutation of extra space resistance, a calcified marine becoming nigh invulnerable to the void of space. A sick twist of fate that the greatest gift to a void-dweller is a curse that never lets you use it. It'd also explain why they don't jettison their statues, they'd be alive for the whole thing.
>>
>>27862997

Right, right... Forgot that bit. Sorry 'bout that, Gov'na.

>>27863001

The space resistance is what I adressed with >>27862881

Because I believe the mutation should have something to do with the marine's regenerative abilities and the black carapace becoming suddenly hyperactive.

Though I stated that maybe, all the Dreadnought-pilots should calcify, maybe we should keep that down in perspective of keeping the mutation an exception and not a rule.

However I would still love the Void-Touched to somehow be the source for bioluminiscent heraldry and runes on high-ranking Star Kraken brothers.

+1 on Dat Pic, artificer! I like the subtle glow on the runes.

Also yeah, I guess having Dark Crusade pull the whole "Helmet of Lorgar needs Lovecraft-ian tentacles" gets in our way here, as well as the fact that original chaos warriors are, in fact, vikings.

However, a loophole may be that we don't need the HORNY VIKINGS trope, but rather a more historical approach to vikings, what with mask-helmets and such and have the squid arms more like appendice on the helmet's lower part.

Let's see... Bioluminescence is usually caused by bacteria, but if I remember correctly one of the 40k RPGs, Dark Heresy, I believe, mentioned that bioluminescent tattoos are totally a thing. There is one in particular called a "Thieve's Light", which is a palm tattoo and gives the bearer just enough light to pick a lock or covertly search a small area.

Not sure how the heraldry of the calcified would factor into that.

I... I'm struggling to see a connection, as well.

Which makes me sad.

Greatly.

So let's try it this way: As somebody suggested before, maybe it's not the chaulk that encases a Void-Touched, but actually it's their blood.

Being not only "stashed", but actually "treated" in the Locker in an attempt to keep their metabolism going, the Void-Touched's blood is being cleansed by an external machine.

Some of this blood is drained as sign of their martyrium and guiding light for their brothers in the dark, as they who have become touched by and thus part of the void are now their aides in finding their way.

So they've got glow-in-the-dark blood? Seems kind of cool. Actually, what if it's a reaction that their blood has to the vacuum? The vacuum causes blood to rapidly coagulate to seal off their wounds, becoming eerily luminescent in the reaction.

But why the Void-Touched, as it's the Black Carapace that malfunctions? Maybe because it causes the Black Carapace to go into overdrive, it kicks the rest of the body into high-gear as well, their Void-resistance taking on new and unexpected forms, such as the glowing blood and total calcification.

*ahem*

Good evening gentlemen, thank you all for waiting.

After pouring over my maps I have determined that the Star Krakens - and the Deep itself - exist somewhere in *this* area of the Segmentum Ultima.

I have selected this spot due to its nearness to Imperial Worlds, an Ork Empire and several Eldar territories, explaining the ungodly alliance that cast down our glorious heroes. The 'Deep' has been inked in with black; this is an estimate only, positioned because it makes the most sense. As you'll note, it "keeps the Ultramarines out."

And we don't want the Ultramarines moving in. We have a nice neighbourhood here.

Thank you.

normal dreadnoughs are no different, but venerable dreadnoughts, rarely referred to as Locker Dreadnoughts, are the calcified brains removed from fully calcified veteran void touched. The calcium corruption spreads to their mechanical behemoth armor, causing the device to slowly, inevitably become a statue as well.

Coral covered dreadnoughts matching into fire for final glory.

Myeeeeehh, seeing as how the venerable Dreads usually have high-tier tech in them I think the Techmarines wouldn't allow that they become thoroughly calcified.

i would be all in favour for having, as mentioned earlier, the Venerable Dreads' pilotes become so utterly calcified because the near-death experience shocked their metabolism into overdrive, triggering the calcification process in the first place, and being the oldest serving marines, it's likely enough time has passed that they have become so calcified in their sarcophaguses that they need whalesong/bloopspeak generated by their brainwaves and processed by speakers to communicate.

My understanding was just a void, with Mobius (and its assorted archeotech) having been brought in some time in the mysterious past. WooOOoo.

>>
>>27863755

How about this one? It's really just an excuse to give derelict ships and asteroids in the Deep a barnacled look.

> Void-Barnacle

This silicate-based lifeform spread via small larvae, which can travel the void for centuries or more at a time before attaching themselves to any object they encounter, becoming immobile. They latch onto objects and begin to grow in size, feeding passively off the surface on which they stick and lashing out at any passing debris with a long "tongue", which is used for feeding as much as self-defense.

They are common on metal-rich asteroids, but seem to favor the metal hulls of spacecraft and void stations. Because of this, their shells become highly armored and resistant to standard weapons fire, but are still highly vulnerable to Melta weapons. Specimens usually grow no more than 2-4 meters in diameter, but larger specimen may be encountered on older vessels and asteroids, becoming as large as 12 meters in diameter.

>>27863806

Sounds cool, of kind of impractical to kill a Kraken every time you want to help. Maybe chapters that have killed a Kraken sometime in their history get to help out. But that sounds impractical as well.

What if it's changed to an event, "The Kraken Hunt"? Chapters that want to compete gather a ship and head out together to kill a Void Kraken that has been marked for death for arbitrary reasons.

The winners get the glory of having won the competition, but I'm thinking they should get a little more. What if they get some exclusive rights to the Deep? Maybe they get to loan a specific base of operations in the Deep, one that changes hands to the winners of the last competition? This would give the chapter a nice little route to Ultramar and the east, as they don't have to jump around the Deep to get to it.
>>
>>27863639
Huginn is a massive stellar array that gathers information within the Deep, the Lighthouses - of which there are two, one on their sole battle barge, the other attached to one of their asteroid fortresses - are focusing lenses for Huginn that massively increase its ability and double as electronic warfare systems at the cost of blinding Huginn to anything not within the Lighthouse's range, Muninn is the data storage facility that records all of Huginn's findings.

As for mechadendrites, maybe two for battle brothers tipped with breaching tools and four for company commanders, two breaching, two weaponized?

Here's the guy who first threw around the term "Ten-Flag council".

I have slapped together a piece of fluff I'd like to add to the situation:

The Ten-Flag Council

When the chapter’s fleet was founded, it was the first Chapter Master Huskor the Wailer who called the ten captains of his ten companies and declared: “You are my best! You are the ones I trust with guiding the troops and guiding our ships and I do so without fear or worry! So it is only fair I trust you to speak your mind and demand the proper support for your ships, each!
Thus, you ten shall be my council – Represent your ship with your flag, and carry it with you when you come together. The Chapter Master who succeeds me shall be handpicked by me from among the ten of you, and he shall heed your counsel as you all shall serve him with wisdom and reason, and this shall be the same for all Chapter Masters who follow. I shall fulfil my part of this oath in all my lifetime and I shall see that all my successors shall do the same.”
The council would later be increased, as the captains were allowed to bring a retinue of two of their choosing from their crew with them to advise them in their thoughts and discussions. The captains would take their most trusted lieutenants and sergeants, sometimes even their first mate who would otherwise overlook the ship in the captain’s absence.
And so, the Council of Ten-Flags was part of the Star Krakens since its beginning, and for centuries before Achab’s madness, the battle brothers would shorten the name to the “Ten-Flag council”, as it was not their nature to speak in flowery terms.
And then the madness began: Chapter Master Achab, later to be known as “Achab who stood alone” would sacrifice his proud chapter of then 1500 brothers for the single-minded, reckless pursuit of vengeance and hatred.

[cont.]
>>
>>27864155
I had a look at the wiki, was really just seeing if there was any requests or details that people thought were really specific.
>>
>>27864148
So we're going with calcification then are we?

What kind of event do you want me to write him in, or do you just want a general bio, possibly written from his perspective?
>>
>>27864183
Fearing for their existence, the Ten-Flag council conspired against him and led the rest of the chapter to abandon their Chapter Master at the peak of a great battle that would have consumed them all.
After they had abandoned Achab in his mad pursuit, the remaining captains of the fleet were in dispute: Whom of them should they appoint to the position of Chapter Master? Their rivalling nature left all of them claiming the most competence for the position.
Eventually, Brother-Captain Alfonsius of the 4th company, then commandeering captain of strike cruiser “The Trident”, stepped forth, with his ship’s first mate, sergeant Njord Egilson of his veteran boarding unit and the ship’s Chaplain Lyrion backing his daring claim:
“A kraken may have one head, but he has many arms.
Each of our ships is but an arm, yet only our unity will form a head.
Thus”, he spoke, “All of us shall be as one - when each arm grasps the same prey.
In that time, one shall lead us, and he shall be not more than the first among equals:
Choose one who shall take the old Chapter Master’s seat and he shall be Commodore of the fleet.
And he also shall be the face of the chapter, for there will be many who will seek audience,
Who will wish the Kraken to surface and hail them.
The commodore shall be the chapter’s voice from out of the Deep and he shall present the outsiders’ wishes to the chapter, so that these councilmembers, who are all part of the head as well as each arm may discuss and decide.
For as it has always been tradition of the worlds from which we draft our initiates that all men must agree on a matter before it is settled.”

[cont.]
>>
>>27864215
Inspired by his words, some rose to applaud, but then Birgir Brynjarrson, captain of the 8th and strike cruiser “Hafgufa” intervened:
“How can we be sure that this one we choose does not succumb to the same warmongery like Achab Who Stood Alone? I see wisdom in your words, brother Alfonsius, but we must make sure this one does not grow too fond of his strength – And as is tradition of the fringe worlds from whence our initates hail, only those of proven worth shall claim leadership and they must prove their worth time and time again.
I say for every cycle that passes in the Deep, a new Commodore shall be chosen from among this council, and if one of the council finds the commodore lacking in his abilities to lead, it shall be allowed at all times that one of the Ten Flags may challenge him for his leadership.
I shall not agree until this demand is met!”
Alfonsius grew wary of his Brother-Captain, fearing for a cleverly disguised scheme to take control, but agreed nevertheless because the arguments of Birgir were still sound and wise, and so did the whole of the Ten-Flag council.
Right then, they chose Argonnár of the 3rd company and captain of strike cruiser “Lantern Bearer” to be their first Commodore of the new Ten-Flag council, for he was known to be the most patient among them, striking not before necessary or before the blow would be most devastating.

With this as their leader, most of the Star Krakens became very secretive, leaving all public service to their serving Commodore and estranging themselves even further from the Imperium.
That is, until the Varangian guard was founded.

Neat!

Also guys, here's some more random writing. This time on the chaplains and chapter prisoners.

-JUDGEMENT BY THE VOID-

Though the Star Krakens are ruthlessly efficient warriors with no mercy for their targets, they do occasionally take prisoners from raids. Being captured as a
prisoner of the Krakens is a fate so horrible, even rumors of the treatment of the prisoners are spoken with hushed whispers and superstitious sailor's gestures.

The prisoners are kept encased in chains on their journey to Mobius, in solitude and darkness. Eyes covered, they are carried each to special isolation chambers built
on to the side of the station and rechained hand and foot to a cross shaped adamantium rack. Rumors say that the prisoners are left like this for up to a week before
anyone returns to them, subsisting only on the dripping briney water from above their covered heads.

Suddenly, when all hope is lost to the prisoner, the door will re-open. Footsteps approach the rack, and the somber and unforgiving tone of a chaplain of the Krakens
will begin to read to the prisoner of one of the rites of drowning: the Trial by the Void.

"Lament! Lament brothers, for this one has been judged UNCLEAN in the eyes of the Emperor. He has not felt the void! He has not drunk of the oceans and lived to tell
the tale! Lament that this man must be initated to the righteous path so late into his existence. He has cried out, that he is prepared for your benevolent touch. For
what other reason could one summon forth the wrath of the Kraken?". The Chaplain then removes the overhead woolen bag from the prisoner, allowing him to gaze upon him
in his faintly glowing robes in the otherwise dark chamber. "Allow this cretin the chance to join the blessed in the deep, and see the truth."

The footsteps fade away once again, before the door latches more securely than before.

>From the third thread
Brother-Captain Thorolfr Finn, master-and-commander of the Strike Cruiser Beinum, Captain of the Seventh Company. Often referred to as the 'Peregrine' by his peers, although never to his face. Not due to any fear of offense, but simply because none of them ever get the chance. It is said that in the last century he has spent less than six days on Mobius, preferring instead the embrace of the Deep, tirelessly patrolling the shallows, aiding the Imperial Navy in confronting, capturing and exterminating malcontents who attempt to use the disruptive powers of the Deep to escape Imperial Justice.

Rumours abound of his abject cruelty. Many recall an instance where he put a renegade Star Galleon to the sword, slaughtering all twenty thousand members of its crew, whose Captain had hijacked the vessel on behalf of his world, seeking to end a famine there which threatened his family. Thorolfr reasoned that renegade actions were unacceptable, no matter what their motivations. He is also famous for his three day engagement with an Ork Kill Cruiser which had been harassing shipping lanes and then retreating into the cover of the Deep. After tethering their ships together with a lateral drop pod assault, the Captain learned that he in turn had been boarded. A vicious back and forth began, with each vessel boarding the other, until eventually Thorolfr prepared a boarding pod for himself and four of his best men, and had it fired directly at the Ork bridge.
To this day he wears the alien's hat; a trophy, he says, of the best fight any living being had given him centuries.

As much as I like Mechadendrites, I don't think they should be stuck on just anyone. The AdMech might take offense on bestowing the machine god's gifts so easily. That or tech heresy; have you seen the Chaos techpriest? He's got so many tentacles. A Special Character or two might have a harness with some Mechadendrites and weapons, and Company Commanders might have a couple to function as close-combat weapon and bolt-pistol, freeing up their hands. But I feel strongly that Battle Brothers should stick with the hand-held cutter and boarding shield. A little much to give the baseline marine all the fancy equipment.

I might save the Mechandendrites everywhere Idea for myself, making a Hydra or Medusa themed chapters (yes, we have those already, but a themed chapter this time).

There begins a creaking noise, slowly followed by a pop and suction. The wall of the chamber the prisoner faces is opened wide to the void, leaving them gasping and
thrashing on the rack. Inevitably all prisoners cease their thrashing, and fall limp in the chains, at which point the chamber is closed once more and the Chaplain
resucitates them.

"Oh glorious father, this one is not prepared to join you yet. Allow us this opportunity to test his willingness to become one of the drowned."

The chaplain then turns questioningly to the prisoner, who undoubtedly is unable to draw enough breath to reply to him.

"This unworthy one chooses silence in the presence of the void. He shall be allowed to think on his sins, and perhaps in the next case he shall be more repentant."

Prisoners are then left, for days on end in silence and darkness, chained to their rack. Unable to move, see or hear and kept alive by the chapter's servitors
administering injections to them nightly upon their collapse, the prisoners are kept in their cells for time eternal from their perspective.

The chaplains return when they feel it is appropriate, to administer the rite once more, posing the question once more upon ressucitation of the prisoner.

Eventually, their mind breaks from the solitude and exposure to the inky black of the void.

It is said that the prison wing of Mobius echoes with the screams of prisoners, begging to be allowed to drown...

If we have calcification, are we going with The Locker? If love to writefag about one of the keepers of the statues.

speaking if, would such duties fall to librarians, tech marines, or chaplains?
>>
>>27864414
Thanks for that Krakendor, I'll give it a whirl and try and get a few paragraphs whittled off now, if not I'll have them done by tomorow.
>>
Writing mine now, do we use the regular set of gear for tacticals, or do we have some special stuff? Specifically combat knives.
>>
>>27864464
You tell us :)
>>
>>27864439
Well, is the calcification a direct result of a flaw in their geneseed, or is it a combination of perhaps a slight flaw coupled with living in the Deep for so long?

I imagine it would start off much like arthritis, and then slowly the tips and extremities would start to turn to white. From there on the Marine knows he's doomed, and either tries to go out in a blaze of glory, or steels himself to be added to whatever ship/building is it need of more calcium.
>>
Wiki updated, specifically Tactics. Now called Tactics & Organisation, the section now has a section detailing all 'eleven' companies, the names of their strike cruisers, and a small piece of fluff on each.

As you can imagine it's quite bare. Check it out, and then get writing folks.

>>27864464
Only special shit the Star Krakens employ are an abundance of Breaching Shields and Tempest bolter rounds (think shotgun)
>>
>>27864494
I vote slight flaw + the Deep. Special outright flaws are so passe.
>>
>>27864499
Also let me know if I've missed a Cruiser/Company that we've already detailed. I was going off the top of my head and it's nearly 4am here.
>>
>>27864439

Apothecaries, B/C I have this idea stuck in my mind that the Apothecaries are still treating the Void-Touched, hoping to reverse at least the calcificationg.

Also, I'd like the Locker to be a designated room at the Homefortress of the Krakens instead of a ship, because I like to think the chapter would love to wire the living statues to the Munnin archive in order to communicate and download their battle records.
>>
>>27864445
See that you do. On my desk, first thing tomorrow morning! Either the story or your ass ;)

Be warned, brothers. To contemplate the addition of mutation, to council false glory that only exists by written hand, to name thyself like a great hero. These are the sins of the writer. Beware, lest the your sins drag your works down and rip them apart. But I must be silent now, for my sins are greater than all yours combined.

Be careful, brothers
>>
>>27864494

I thought the calcification manifested more as coralization. starts like arthritis, then elbows and joints garden and become crusty like coral slowly progressing through limbs until only mental functions remain.

I'm imagining a sergeant worn a powerfist that's really just a fist-like club of coral.
>>
>>27864517

I'm writing on the Void-Touched as we speak, and it is explicitally stated that they don't occur like for example the Space Wolves wolfing it up like it's 1989, but rather a very rare occurence.

This may be linked due to a certain radiation inside the Deep, yes, but it isn't thought to be a "yeah, we have this storage room full of living statues that once were gods among men, I guess? We don't really know what to do with them, but we're not going to throw them out, either."
>>
>>27864499
>>27864491
I was going to add a few sword into the mix, but most would have combat knives. Is that okay?

Don't want to step on any toes, so trying to check things here.
>>
>>27864595
Wise words. Does a speshul mutation really enhance the Chapter and its story, or are we just doing it to be 'cool' like the other chapters?
>>
>>27864620
All you have to remember is that they're a young chapter, low on equipment and making do with what they have left from their glory days. Also when you're making something up try to remember they're not 'pirate marines' or 'squid marines' but rather 'nautical marines'

After that you're golden.

I was thinking about doing some fluff about Captain Edvard and our version of the Titanic.

Perhaps it wasn't completely wrecked with all hands lost, but had spent the last 75 years is dry dock repairing and cleansing from it's... encounter with a daemon vessel while in warp transit?

Soon it's to be completed and the Xth Company will be ready to ride and raid again?
>>
>>27864623

Yeah, we really don't need anything further than enhanced space-resistance.
>>
>>27864672
Xth do you mean 10th? Because they're wide open and in need of some fluffing. Not the porn star kind either, just regular.
>>
>>27864623

In my humble opinion, it does make for a good reason for the Krakens to become even more secretive and reclusive from the rest of the Imperium, seeing as they actually have to keep any trace of the Void-Touched hidden from the Inquisition or they might be in severe trouble, probably even in danger of ceasing to exist as a chapter because resting inside the Deep is "too much of mutating exposure". In the time the Administorum patches together a new plan to protect that particular bit of Imperial space, the worlds surrounding the Deep will probably have been raided and fucked over several times, which is a situation the Krakens would rather avoid.
>>
>>27864735
By Xth I meant many company that hasn't had a strike cruiser fluffed up.

Strike Cruiser Beinum, glory of the Seventh Company, drifted slowly amongst the stygian abyss of the Deep. The many adornments, statues and carvings on the outside of the mighty vessel were barely visible, reflecting only the thinnest of rays from the stars around the chasm.

On the bridge, Brother-Captain Thorolfr and Chaplain Sworgar were locked in a vicious argument.

"Chaplain..." the Captain began, "Need I remind you that although you may have the Chapter's spiritual interests at heart, I am the Captain of this ship!" Thorolfr's voice bellowed out across the bridge and down the various corridors. "And as such, I decide where we shall go!"

Chaplain Sworgar said nothing, his vast frame budged not an inch, but withstood the verbal lashing from Captain Thorolfr. He knew he was easy to anger, but something deep within the Chaplain's heart told him that there was trouble ahead.

"There was no sign of the Dark Eldar scum when we entered the Ekman Spiral, and there continues to be no sign of them now!" Chaplain Sworgar stood his ground and bellowed at the Brother-Captain. Such impertinence would not be tolerated from some of the lesser ranks, but Thorolfr knew all too well that Sworgar was probably right.

Suddenly, all across the ship, the lights switched off and threw the crew of the Beinum into a pitch-black nightmare.

"It's about time!" Brother-Captain Thorolfr screamed and went charging across the bridge.

Sounds good. The Inquisition would want to eliminate any form of corruption, no matter the source, so they'd have to keep it hushed up.

The effect the Deep has could be different on all geneseed, or the same on all life, which is why the Krakens are territorial, as a brother of another chapter falling to its effects could blow their cover.

>The Deep is an occasional raiding spot for the dark kin, but it is the craftworlders who hate them more. >2/I don't know how many.

Alarms blared and defence mechanisms activated, the undeterred Thorolfr thundered across the ship, followed closely by Sworgar. Three Marines stood and saluted when Thorolfr came stomping around the corner. "We're being boarded Sir, it looks like the Dark Eldar are trying to best us." one of the Marines spoke up.

Thorolfr looked towards Sworgar menacingly, but with a slight glint of triumph. Turning towards the trio of Marines, "Brother, signal the rest of the ship, all four assault units are to follow me to the drop-pods." The Marine nodded quickly and rushed to active the comms.

Outside of the ship, jagged hooks and vicious razors swung through the void and slammed into the hull of the Beinum, catching and clawing in whatever hold they could find. Foul, lithe creatures swarmed over the outside of the ship, crawling into the gashes and holes made by their disgusting inventions.

A sliver of nothingness separated the Strike Cruiser Beinum from it's hunter, the Dark Eldar Cruiser; The Unseen Serpent, had ensnared it's prey and was now closing in for the kill.

Commandant Hethorax paced up and down the bridge, his Eldar-leather coat barely touching the floor. The vicious Commandant barked orders at anyone standing nearby, and punished those who stood around idly, pausing only to admire the damage he was currently doing to the Beinum, pride of the Seventh Company.

Suddenly, a blazing noise filled the entirety of the ship, a ghastly siren filled with the wails of the dead. A hunched over figure lurched towards the Commandant, "Vile one.." the creature spoke with a gravely voice, paused for a second to cough up some bile and continued "It appears that we are being boarded..."

The Commandant's pulse raced, but his countenance did not alter. Taking out the Blaster from his hoslter, he calmly pointed it at the slaves head and blasted the poor, wretched thing into oblivion.

The Void-Touched
The geneseed oft he Star Krakens is pure by all apothecarial standards issued by the Imperium of Man except a slightly defunct Occulube, which colours the entirety of the eyeball black, as well as an enhanced Mucranoid, seeing as the Star Krakens portray an unusual resistance to the vacuum of the void.
However, a few very unlucky individuals suffer a far worse fate: After having entered the Deep for a few centuries, those who had ventured too deep encountered a strange anomaly, one that radiated a dark and fearsome power, which unleashed itself in terrible lightning at the ships passing by. Some of the battle brothers that had been struck by the anomaly’s discharge started to mutate in a gruesome way, their bodies starting to calcify, apparently due to a hyperactive Ossmodula, so they became entrapped in their bodies like statues.
These poor devils are called the “Void-Touched”.
They were gathered and put into the “Locker”, a secret part within Mobius, where Apothecaries care for them day and night, or what would count as such within the dark of the Deep.
With several tubes in their veins and wires from their brains, they are constantly cleansed in an attempt to keep them from total calcification. As the Apothecaries observed these treatments, they came upon another strange mutation:
The blood of the Void-Touched glowed faintly in the lights of the facility, and when the lights were out, the room was still lit with a strange, flowing light. It appeared as if the Oolitic kidney had also been dramatically mutated, enriching the blood with a bioluminescent attribute.
When the news spread, the Chaplains began to drain the blood of their calcified brothers, proclaiming it a blessing from the Emperor: His light had pervaded them in their darkest hour, and through their martyr, the chapter would receive His guidance and protection in the darkness of deep space.

[cont.]
>>
>>27865408
To this day, the Apothecaries tirelessly work to reverse the effect, but all attempts have failed so far.
However, the Void-Touched are still capable of thought and experience – So when time is dire, they are encased in a dreadnought’s sarcophagus whose life preserving machines have been altered to suit their special bodies. Their brains are wired to a brainwave processor who, due to insufficient understanding of the technology, is only capable of processing the thoughts into an acoustic algorithm which sounds like a singing voice from the deep – Reprocessing the signals leads to a sheer unmanageable amount of information in short bursts, allowing these venerated martyr’s to exchange information across a battle in a much faster and much more detailed way.

Quite short, but I guess it captures the spirit while adjusting the whole issue from a constant threat to a "dirty secret"-consequence from an understaking that went wrong.
>>
>not the story, something I just wrote based on a wiki update. This is too damned distracting.

It is established fact within the Chapter that, on the eve of their great battle against the murderous alliance of traitors, xenos and cowards that so thoroughly destroyed their homeworld, all ten of the Brother-Captain's voted unanimously to end Achab's life.

The truth is far murkier.

They met aboard his Battle Barge, not yet called Huginn, in a quiet reliquary in its depths. Above them Achab raged, pacing the bridge of his vessel, insisting two score scribes be constantly at hand to note down his ramblings for the glory of the chapter.

The first vote was cast, to the tune of three holdouts. Impassioned speeches were made, arguments and counter-arguments flew, as did fists and false accusations; of cowardice, betrayal and a spot in hell reserved for he who would turn on his Chapter Master.

The vote was taken again, eight to two. Haugr, Achab's own sergeant, standing in for the company the Chapter-Master commanded, and for the Star Kraken flagship, had changed his stance. Achab stood apart, he reasoned, and Haugr would stand with his brothers - so long as their leader was given one last chance to repent.
>>
>>27865443
What do they use the blood for?
>>
>>27865457
Another hour passed, until finally young Isaias conceded. He was not concerned with betrayal, but rather with honour. He would have no part of Achab's death if it were a knife in the back or a bolt to the head whilst the great man slept, but an honourable death..? Ah, that he could endorse. Achab stood apart, but he deserved that much.

The vote was taken once more, and one last holdout remained: Vastergo, master of the scouts. He would follow his lord to the death, and no argument could assuage him. After a night spent fruitlessly battering the man with words, insults, promises, blows, the nine Brother-Captain's conceded that they could gain no traction, and instead banished him from the room. As he left he made one last plea: "Do not do this brothers. Achab may stand apart, but it is our duty as his vassals to move with him, not judge him. You are weary of war, I am as well. But what we do here borders on blasphemy... We don't have the right!"

His brothers would not swayed, and so Vastergo left, bearing none of them ill, but unable to stomach remaining in the same room as any one of his craven brethren.

The vote was taken again. Nine in favour. Finally unanimous.

So it was that Achab's fate was decided, Achab who stood apart, if it was that he would continue to stand apart, would die alone tomorrow: honourably, but alone.

>might be messy, didn't proof it. Back to cleaning!

Writefags might want to consider throwing a little Caine Mutiny into this, bring up the idea that maybe if the company commanders went about things differently then Achab might not have ended up the way he did.
>>
Have you guys considered bringing Achab back as a servant of Khorne? To me it would make sense that with the amount of anger and blood-lust he had when he died that it would surely attract the Blood God to his soul after he died. All he would have to do is convince Achab that he would be given true warriors to fight alongside him.

Just putting that out there
>>
>>27865640

I like it, but I fail as of yet to see what happens if they pass the Judgement by the Void?

Are they mercifully executed? Are they accepted as thralls into the crew of the strike cruisers?
>>
>>27865760
Khorne only wants the blood, Achab was clearly obsessed, but I don't think he was truly heretical/bloodthirsty, he just snapped and was only a danger to himself and the Chapter.

>>27865708
I formally reserve the write to post writefagging about the Sixth Company ship, and treat it like 'The Bounty'. A very by-the-book Captain, with possible mutiny thrown in.
>>
>>27865801

The judgment is reserved for the worst criminals in the chapter's eyes.

As for passing the judgement?
They can't pass judgement by the void. The entire idea was based off my imagining the prisoners begging their captors to kill them from some text I read for college years ago.
>>
>>27865815
So Achab could be obsessed in getting revenge against his own chapter who, in his eyes, betrayed him and are all heretics. That way we could have the whole madness angle played in because Achab's leading an army of Chaos spawn to destroy the Star Krakens but he honestly believes he's in the right.
>>
>>27865760
I remember Brother-Master Achab. I think he'd rather drink Tanna with Eldar before he'd fall to Chaos. If he lives, it's somewhere on the Grendel homeworld, where he rips them apart at night as he stalks into the great halls of their Thanes
>>
>>27865815
If anything he'd fall to Tzneetch...
>>
>>27865870
YES!

I like that, rumours abound of a vast creature, covered in metal and reeking of death, that plagues the Grendel constantly.
>>
>>27865863
I almost forgot; Khorne would still get his share of blood out of this because Achab waged almost constant war with people who he thought slighted his chapter in the first place. Who's to say that he wouldn't start that whole process up again under the banner of Chaos?
>>
Making one last pass of the thread before I hit the sack. Then when I'm done with that, I'll probably go to bed.

Added two new writefags to the wiki. I'm holding off adding a third because I don't know how sold the consensus is on mutations of an extreme nature... Reviewing other entries into the wiki they do kind of contradict earlier decisions about the chapter. (minimal deviance, totally loyal, only a few strange rituals which might upset the Inquis.)

I've saved it to a notepad document. Someone let me know. Also noting on the wiki that the sixth company is the realm of VikingBro. Reserve your company today! Only six left!

I don't know if ship names have been set in stone yet but I feel uneasy with names like "The trident" or "Lantern-Bearer". I think more viking/northern Slavic names would better set the tone. Like these

>Heorot
>Grendel
>Tumulus
>Kievan Rus'
>Novgorod
>Rurik
>Volga
>>
>>27867451
Grendel is the name of the xenos scum who the marines haev been fighting, but the rest are fine. Though the tone isn't really nordic or slavic, more simply nautical.
>>

>>
>>27867720
It's actually a pretty cool name for a ship, but it's already taken.
>>
OK...so I have a very important question I feel needs to be answered...

Final say on void-touched, calcification, The Locker, luminescent tatoo/paint...

We're jumping all over the place on what's what and I wanna know what we're defining as true before endeavoring to writefag about any part of it, then learn everyone wanted something different.

Are we keeping parts, all, what?

There could be a "Locker", whether a room or ship, or whatever, where the statues are kept (assuming we're still all together on statues) until they are ground up for luminesent powder, and at that time their brains installed in Dreadnoughts?

Or just permanent supersecret tomb to keep it shaded from the inuisition? Sticking corally brains in dreadnoughts is bound to get noticed one day.
>>
>>27864623
It's not necessary in any way at all, thus far. Personally I would remove it, as it gets in the way of storytelling by bending the nature of the Krakens to the mutation, and making them tread the line of heresy like EVERY OTHER fucking homebrew out there written by people too cool for school/the Emperor.
